This is part 3. Here are part 1 and part 2.

New Year's Song (过年的歌), 2020 Why it's good: it's so cute, happy, and festive! You may hear it in your local Asian supermarket around Lunar New Year, because it's fairly popular. The video is adorable too. I love his bandmates, A-Zhuo and Da Fei, in their costumes - Da Fei is the god of wealth (I think), and A-Zhuo looks like some longevity god? My knowledge of Chinese mythology and deities is lacking.

2. Adore (十分喜欢), 2019 Why it's good: so soft and romantic! This feels like your boyfriend, Liu Yuning, is singing a love song directly to you. It was also written by Penny Tai, who Liu Yuning would later team up with on season 3 (2021) of the variety show Our Song.

3. Obviously (明明), 2019 Why it's good: just very catchy, especially the chorus. It's the first song on his 2019 album Ten (十), and it's a good choice for that, because it hooks you in.

4. Light Years Away (光年之外), 2018 cover of a G.E.M. song for the variety show Golden Melody 2 Why it's good: this was his first music variety show performance, only 2 months after he blew up online in June 2018. He said on livestream that preparing for this was super stressful, and his vocal coach (or maybe a producer? I can't remember) was having a conniption the night before. But he knocked it out of the park! I also listened to the original G.E.M. song just now, and it's got a completely different energy. Liu Yuning totally did his own thing with it. Thanks to @thefeastandthefast for sharing this performance, and the story, with me.

5. Azure (这蔚蓝), 2024 performance on the variety show Melody Journey Why it's good: I love that chorus, with the "yi dian yi dian yi dian yi dian yi dian" ("bit by bit by bit") in it. Liu Yuning also recently talked about this performance on livestream, and how this song was out of his comfort zone, so he was incredibly nervous. Again, he knocks it out of the park.

6. Adventurer (探险家), 2018 promo song for the film Alpha Why it's good: someone once asked Tumblr OG Liu Yuning fan @heymeowmao for some recommendations of songs where Liu Yuning rocks out, and this was on the list. And yeah, I think this might be his most rocking song - the only contender I can think of is his recent performance of Chi Luo Luo with Da Zhang Wei on season 6 of Our Song. But that's for another post (if I end up doing a list of fave collabs). For now, enjoy Liu Yuning at his most rock 'n' roll!

7. A Good Guy (挺好个人呐), 2020 promo song for the film My People, My Homeland Why it's good: just quirky as hell! I haven't seen the film this was promoting, but I assume it's a retro thing, because this is a total disco throwback. The heroic voice Liu Yuning uses in it is super fun as well. I'm just glad he decided to do such a silly song.

8. Fireworks and Stars (烟火星辰), 2021 OST opening theme for You Are My Glory Why it's good: sappy-as-hell theme song for the drama where two of China's prettiest people, Dilraba and Yang Yang, get it on. Liu Yuning has done a zillion cheesy love song OSTs, but this one sticks with me for some reason. It's got the same songwriter as his OST for Love Between Fairy and Devil (寻一个你) and that Melody Journey song I love so much, Falling (掉), so I think maybe it's just this songwriter's style that I like.

9. A Good Year (一个好年), 2023 Why it's good: this is Liu Yuning's much lesser-known Lunar New Year song. It's much sweeter, more nostalgic, and less energetic than the other one, but I think I've listened to this one more. It just feels uplifting and warm in the middle of the January/February gloom here in Vancouver.

10. Fall in Love, 2022 Why it's good: I can't believe I almost forgot this one! I've listened to it so many times that it's not in my regular rotation these days. This is his danciest poppiest song. It was originally going to be the lead single on his 2nd album, but since that album still hasn't come out (here's hoping for January 2025!), he said it's officially not new enough to be on there anymore. Anyway, this song is fun as hell!

Girl Rules - OKAY I am into it <3 Love the whole aesthetic first of all and seconds in and I'm already wanting to watch it. I also just really love MilkLove.

Ticket To Heaven - Aesthetics remind me a little of a Jeff Satur music video but FourthGem and I'm already invested. They're so bloody handsome I can't deal with it. Also feels really raw for this couple so I'm excited to see where it goes.

Only Friends : Dream On - I feel like I'm cheating watching this trailer without seeing Only Friends yet. Can't wait for the mess though (and Ohm's in here, I didn't finish watching Kidnap just cause i wasn't feeling it but I do wanna see them in this) Also NEO?! (Boston, in this case)

Wu - I'm absolutely loving the supernatural elements of this upcoming drama. The music during the ending sounds very Marvel though so it gave me a little chuckling power.

Me and Thee - PondPhuwin! Did Pond cut his hair? Something feels different and I'm pretty sure it's that. OMG PERTH?!?! Fucking wait, sorry?! I've just seen my baby. It's quite funny though, little bit of crack. Also very familiar music at the end? (Where have I heard it before?)

That Summer - First man on the screen Winny <3 Omg Mond and Neo too. Oh yes, WinnySatang main couple I'm looking forward to it. You have no idea how much I adore them. Like really. Is Mond acting as Winny's uncle?!

Boys In Love - Well he's a new face to me... I think? He's got nice lips (sorry I can't think of anything else but kind of reminds me of like Felix + Kento Yamazaki mixed together)....Aww it is very cute though, kind of fluttery. But I think the KimMon couple with Chokun and Aston is the couple I'm most excited for.

Burnout Syndrome - First of all, sick title. Also Gun? AND IS THAT DEW?! WHAT THE HELL I was not expecting him I feel like I haven't seen him in years. OffGun <3 Dew once again, playing the morally good (?) homewrecker.

Cat For Cash - FIRSTKHAOTUNG! Is that View's voice? Weird but I'm oddly intrigued, won't be the weirdest shit I'll watch and purely cause the couple-Satang again?! Sweet sounding OST.

Dare You To Death - I'm really excited to see Drake in this. Not really feeling the couple though but this is just the teaser. I'm more into the mystery thriller side of this drama rather than the romantic side, but I can definitely be persuaded.

Love you teacher - PERTH! I love him so much. It's quite cute - following his boyfriend to teach. CAR CRASH? Amnesia i'm guessing....didn't have to guess long. AH KAY! You have no idea how much power this man has over me. I am such a Perth girl it's honestly unreal. Established relationship also?

A Dog and A Plane - Tay and Marc? HELLO. God. Just exposing my faves in this post really. Not really interested in the drama at all though.

My Romance Scammer - This guy reminds me of Byungchan or Junkyu and another reminds me of a smaller Song Kang. Was gonna say not interested but now with that twist in there I'm a lot more interested.

My Magic Prophecy - Oooh Jimmy should be in his element. Will probably really only watch this for Jimmy. But I really do like the supernatural element in this.

MU-TE-LOVE - PRIMILY my girl <3 There's a lot of fortune related dramas I see. Dew, player. Is that Jamie from Home School? I can't tell. ONE OF THE TWINS. NEO AS A DRAG QUEEN HELLO. As this teaser goes on, it gets more random but also so interesting and like oddly unrelated. No, but Ohm's new man is so attractive.

Whale Store xoxo - MILKLOVE. I am not as interested in it as I am Girl Rules. But I do think it's cute. Very small town romance cute. Ending song also cute.

I Love 'A Lot Of' You - ....C'mon. Nanon's in here. But like what the hell is happening? OHH okay five personalities/alters and making them all fall in love with him. Nanon always tends to pick really good fucking scripts that interest me. I'd love if only four of them really loved him and then the other one has no interest in him.

Head 2 Head - I'm loving the banter. ALSO TWIST? I'm also interested in the side couple too.

Melody of Secrets - I'm interested in this horror/thriller/mystery thing and Force is cool. I feel like I'm watching one of ENHYPEN's highlight reel things. Book has really pretty eyes.

Thangamey - Paava Kadhaigal

I can't stop screaming about Paava Kaidhagal enough, and this episode was so emotional. I love this song so much, and it is a beautiful song but I still feel so much pain listening to this. When this starts playing on shuffle, it always a bittersweet feeling.

2. เพลง���ี่เพิ่งเขียนจบ (Our Song) - Bad Buddy (Nanon Korapat)

Of course I was gonna include this. There is no way I was gonna leave this out. It is my baby's song from my fave series. It is special. I still remember not being able to process the song when it came out during episode 11. Like I could not watch the MV after the episode. It was such an emotional attack. I would have also included Just Friend?, but I could not find the rock version the both of them did for OhmNanon1stFM. That version of Just Friend was always be on another level!

3. 不忘 - The Untamed (Wang Yibo)

The whole CQL soundtrack is beautiful. But this is my favourite song from the OST. Yibo's voice is just so beautiful and it goes straight to your heart. He brings out LWJ's emotions so beautifully.

4. รักษา (Healing) - My School President (Gemini, Fourth, Ford, Satang)

MSP is a musical, and all the songs are beautiful! But my absolute faves are Healing and Come Closer. I'm adding an alternate version of Come Closer below instead. The way all their voices mash so soulfully here!! And I love the lyrics.

5. จังหวะตกหลุมรัก X อีกนิด (Magic Moment X Come Closer Mash Up) - Beluca Concert (Tay Tawan, New Thitipoom)

This might be cheating. But I do love Come Closer alot, and I love this mashup version of it so much. So I am linking this. Ford's voice texture is so similar to Tay's. So I love that they did this. I lost my mind when I heard it on the stream.

I can't even play this game. because like... i started with midnights and i'm already like... this is a 3 dimensional space because like. i just dumped 3 evermore songs over every song from midnights? and like? can my "god tier" songs all be devastating? like? I love the happy dancey tay songs... but like... i'm also arguing with myself because like i can objectively say that like... when i get to lover Soon You'll Get Better is a Better Song and it Hurts More but listenability wise, I promise you that it's middle of the pack on preference because I literally cannot listen to that song without sobbing? same with like Ronan and Bigger Than The Whole Sky? But by the same token, WCS is currently vibing pretty high because i can separate myself from it? and like... Out Of The Woods, Mean, and Clean are my sentimental favorites. Like if you ask me what my favorite Taylor song is, I say one of those. But. Because I'm not going purely off "i like this song more" they won't end up as high as they should? 1 - come down soon by lizzy mcalpine, i got called out by airbuds earlier bc appaza my ‘playlist is about as diverse as a one-flavour ice cream shop’…. i’d only listened to it 31 times by that point and they weren’t even all in a row…. there’s variety, i promise!! anyway also this song is deeply bartylily and i��ve been obsessing over it bc i think i wanna use a lyric as the title for one of my wips (library fic anyone?) so that’s number one rn

2 - guilty as sin? by taylor swift, the swoopy bit after the bridge going into the chorus again makes me so so excited every single time i love this song so much…. again it’s another bartylily coded song (as a wise person once said (it was lane, hi baby), a lot of ttpd songs are bc matty & tay were bartylily coded. which. horrible thing to think but unfortunately true), but my mind has also been consumed by thinking of it as andromeda before she runs away, as evidenced by the edit i made lmao

3 - the bolter by taylor swift, it just does something so satisfying to my brain idk, it’s another one that been on repeat also that’s mrs. zabini right there, i think about her everytime i listen to it like the entire bridge… there’s escape in escaping…. yeah makes me a little crazy

wow actually maybe airbuds was right, maybe i do need some variety…. but i will say, these are my faves right this very second and they will undoubtedly change once i get over this specific little obsessive moment, last week it was sabrina carpenter’s espresso and glen campbell’s wichita lineman (a song which nobody but me understands actually that one’s a long time favourite) and who knows what it’ll be next week….

ooo now this is interesting! i’ve chosen 3 artists that I also love reading into their lyrics — and I think we can all agree that it would be a crime not to include the lyric master herself… taylor swift;)

taylor swift — one of my favourite tay songs I would actually say upon a first listen you would categorise it as one of her ‘simpler’ pieces in terms of complexity, however when you do read the lyrics, I feel like it speaks (pun intended) a lot about taylor’s era at the time! and in honour of speak now (taylor’s version) — it’s ‘mean’! taylor has mastered her craft with creating a good balance between simple lyrics and what she means emotionally, an example being “words like knives” / “voice like nails on a chalkboard” and “all you’re ever gonna be is mean” — it balances those similes and the bluntness of the chorus amazingly, and it’s just so fun to listen to and delve and explore. speak now has always been a special album because she uses her music to communicate not only with us swifties (who love to read into everything), but also the idle gossip that she doesn’t write her own songs — the most girlboss move ever to then release an entirely self wrote album. now that is who taylor is. the special thing with taylor as well, or at least how I interpret the song, although she’s clearly talking about her own experiences, her lyrics don’t alienate the listener, because she knows that we relate. whether it be from bullying or anything else, “all you are is mean” also tells the listener that you are more than them, and your success is entirely up to you, not to the negative & mean people in your life! you are worth everything!

paramore — by also choosing paramore along with taylor, you are absolutely right in assuming that I am not okay after listening to ‘castles crumbling’. but we move! for paramore, I want to talk about ‘thick skull’ from their latest album ‘this is why’, because of the powerful lyrics along with hayley’s vocals and the instruments and just everything. although I’m obviously a massive the 1975 fan, I will admit that I think ‘thick skull’ is the strongest ending compared to recent albums that have been released, and although ‘when we are together’ is a strong end to ‘bfiafl’, I think ‘thick skull’ takes the crown. ‘this is why’ as an entire album has some of the strongest lyrics I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to, so just narrowing this down has been insanely difficult. “I am a magnet for broken pieces” firstly sets up that dire atmosphere along with the low, slow introduction in the music itself. I love music that feels like an experience (clearly from my other analysis’) and this is exactly what the song feels like. it’s simple and effective (my favourite combination). straight off the back of that, “I am attracted to broken people” although reflects the same atmosphere, my reaction has always been relatableeeeeee. finally, the obvious “thick skull never did nothing for me” is so emotional and hard hitting, yet also liberating for hayley herself, stating that they’re ‘self indulgent’ and ‘healing’, making the song an absolutely emotional pleasure to listen to.

the japanese house — my favourite album of the year, ‘in the end it always does’ has produced some seriously genre changing and revolutionary songs. trust me when I say this album is life changing! one of the songs I think is slept on from the album is ‘over there’, next to ‘sunshine baby’ as my favourites. I am currently absolutely obsessed with amber, so I wanted to look at the chorus in particular. like I mentioned previously, songs that feel like an experience are the best, and the masterful layering of the vocals is really what gets me throughout the entire album — it is absolutely beautiful. “where do you wanna go? did you wanna get some air? do you like it over there?” by having the chorus limited to interrogative sentences, it really helps create that isolation and separation that comes from not knowing someone anymore (specifically through a breakup). it starts off almost hopeful and receptive with “where do you wanna go?”, willing, before acknowledging that development through “do you like it over there?” / “over there?” — now completely limited.

hopefully all of that made sense, definitely weird to not be talking about the 1975 but super fun nonetheless! and also thank you very much, shouldn’t be too bad hopefully and gonna savour the time before exams this year and actually kick my butt to revise super early.

this is so tricky!! i am the number 1 midnights defender and lover

stars by the pocketful (which is funny since i hate this song)

all of yoyok? but if i’m being picky i’ll go with “from sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes” because it is SUCH a simple line but it comes with incredibly vivid imagery that conveys so much by using so little. absolute genius

midnight rain is also an up and down masterpiece but i’ll go with “all of me changed like midnight rain” and “he never thinks of me / except when i’m on tv”

obviously “give me back my girlhood it was mine first”

“put on your records and regret meeting me” (i’ll never move past the djats implications of high infidelity)

bejeweled is another PERFECT song in my opinion but the opening of “baby love” is one of tay’s most iconic moments. and the entire chorus is not only catchy and poignant but so quintessentially Taylor Swift™️

LABYRINTH!!! you genuinely cannot make me pick from labyrinth the entire song is flawless not a line is wasted or should be changed and the beauty is in how the song’s narrative progresses and builds upon itself so to isolate just one line is sort of misleading anyway

unironically “karma is my boyfriend” changed my life for the better in so many ways. it is STILL a top 3 song off midnights. if karma has no fans then i am dead

“does it ever miss wicklow sometimes” 🥲🥲🥲🥲 no seriously how does she have me crying over a ROCK

mastermind is another unbeatable song for me but if i HAVE to choose im going with “i’m only cryptic and machiavellian cause i care” because of the line delivery, the meaning, and yet again, the way it captures Taylor Swift™️ so so well. but yeah the whole song is stacked with incredible lyricism and the storyline is so compelling

the great war has a lot of my favorites not necessarily because of the lyrics but because of her delivery but the one image from it that i really adore is “crimson clover” and also “i drew curtains closed / drank my poison all alone”

there’s a lot more from paris than i expected. “2003 unbearable” honorary mention because that is my birth year. “sit quiet by my side in the shade / and not the kind that’s thrown, i mean the kind under where a tree has grown” is an all time favorite for me. i get so excited to sing along to it and i think it’s hilariously clever word play

and also “let the only flashing lights be the tower at midnight” gets to me every. time.

“i want to brainwash you into loving me forever” Taylor Swift™️ that’s all i have to say that’s another all time fav line right there it’s so excellent
