the thinggg about formulaic television cop dramas medical shows etc. is that there is always an inherent tension between Character and Message because these shows are like. more platonic dialogues than actual character and plot driven stories. you watch an episode of Law & Order and you immediately understand what the larger message about society and the state of the criminal justice system they’re trying to send is. and the best of them balance and interweave character with message to create fantastic TV but that tension between entertainment and morality play is so universal and so FAMILIAR and so deeply human that i will always love these shows. it’s the charm in the heavyhanded christmas play your grandma’s church puts on every winter. it’s the anxieties and questions of the amorphous collective consciousness embodied and reflected back at you and it ALWAYS hits.
