Re-watched My Father's Dragon made Me wanted to do a slight take on Elmer's Future, as well as his Children since the Books confirms he has 1 Son and 1 Daughter (Yes, really. It's confirmed that he actually does have 2 Children of his Own) since I wanted to do an Interpretation of what his Kids would look like in Cartoon Saloon's Film Adaptation (even though we only did hear His Daughter narrating the Story throughout the Whole Movie).
The Wife you see whose the Mother of Elmer's Kids is defiantly Callie from the Movie. Yeah, I technically ship them since The End as I can at least sense some potential in these Two Together
(I mean, she literally did her own Dragon interpretation & wore a hat resembling someone else before Elmer could even met Boris on the Island, can you blame her?).
And yes, that stuffed plush you see right here is rather (not just an Easter Egg), but a simple *hint*, *hint*. 😏

Personal Opinion on Each Cartoon Saloon Movie Antagonist?
Raging from Best/Fave to Ok to Worst/Least Fave?
Hmmm….
Tumblr media
Macha is probably my favorite even if she gets redeemed. Plus her full lore is fascinating, cursed a whole village and men with minstrel cramps for mocking her during a race while she was about to give birth.
Tumblr media
Crom Cruach is next. A small appearance, but his design is top notch. Plus his historical lore is so messed up with child sacrifices. Plus the blood on his mound.
Tumblr media
The Siths from Screecher’s Reach. Both are so awesome I wish it was a full film or show instead of an episode.
Tumblr media
Harold Red Tooth. The man is still alive and has caused so much pain for our cast. Those who survived got serious PTSD from his clan’s actions.
Tumblr media
Oliver Cromwell. Messed up guy with a messed up punishment post death. Plus he was totally a Wolfwalker after the film.
Tumblr media
The Taliban…. Enough said.
Tumblr media
The ape from Father’s dragon. He’s…. Okay. But he is the weakest of the Cartoon Saloon antagonists.

Finally got around to putting together some of the scenes I coloured on Cartoon Saloon's My Father's Dragon... It was a wonderful film to work on, I enjoyed it a lot, in large part thanks to having really great colleagues!

While I'm still a little bit soured from how the My Father's Dragon movie was generally handled in the tone/writing department, I genuinely believe that Cartoon Saloon could do an amazing adaption of the Tales from Dimwood Forest books

RE; Secret of Kells (SoK) seems weird thematically comment that I wrote years ago.
Okay, after a month in Ireland on a dig and a year of reflecting on what I learned there , i think i see a stronger theme playing out across 3 films.
If SoK is set in the monastic days of Ireland, it sets up the relationship between mortals (Irish catholic Christians) and sidhe of the ancient pagan past. While they're suspicious of eachother, they aren't always antagonistic. In fact, its basically understood that Aisling has been watching over the monastery when Brian returns home (in wolf form). They arent totally allied, (St. Patrick vs pagans in the intro to Wolfwalkers), but the Catholic Irish blend the old with the new and create something new.
In Wolfwalkers, under English puritanical rule with a very Cromwellian figure, the relationship becomes directly adversarial. The English Protestant colonizers are seeking to assert direct control over the natural world and dispose of native Irish in league with devilish Sidhe powers that stand in the way. The friendship that develops regonizes the inherent rights and power of the natural world, and while the Native Irish and the Colonizers may not see eye to eye due to their experiences and trauma, the nature based old traditions become a unifying connection. They can all be Irish with the Sidhe/pagan/wolf touchstones as a common identity.
By the time of Song of the Sea, the modern era no longer has a place for the Sidhe. The spirits of the past are locked in stone, and in order to survive, they must leave Ireland for Tirnanog and hope that humans keep them alive through song and stories. This is an old commentary about Modernity (and also some 19th century irish nationalist propoganda) and the idea that the scientific search for truth disenchants the world. SotS presents a choice for Saorise, the old ways and the new cannot exist side by side anymore, and she has to give up her fey powers in order to stay with her human family, which matters more than magic alone.
Saw someone refer to Cartoon Saloon as the Irish Studio Ghibli and…
Yes. Yes it is. Seriously, watch their films if you have not had the pleasure already. Whether it’s the Irish Mythology trilogy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or The Breadwinner, and upcoming ‘My Father’s Dragon’ with Netflix.

Watch these films. They are masterpieces of modern animation and innovation. I did my first film final on ‘The Breadwinner’ and have no regrets.

Happy Birthday! Been reading TMK for a while and really enjoying it, have you ever shared what inspired the story?
I'm not sure I have, actually, if only because it's not very interesting lol.
A long time ago, I used to play on a lot of rpg forums (where you would post your roleplay responses to each other) and back then there were a lot to pick from. I joined one that had an original fantasy setting and one of the cultures was inspired by the Vikings, which prompted me to do a bit of research. That board folded before I even played my character--which was actually a precursor to Coal--but I guess I found the Vikings in particular to be interesting enough to do more with.
More background and very early drawings below the cut!
This question prompted me to go looking for some of my earliest TMK drawings! Here's perhaps the first Coal drawings with a girl who would eventually become Hedda. For some reason she has a vaguely Asian outfit and I'm not sure why. Perhaps even then I was looking to emphasize the international reach of the Viking period.
Tumblr media
Here's a page where Hedda starts to look like Hedda:
Tumblr media
Now the very early story for TMK is quite different from how it ended up. Coal was always a kind of undead warrior, but how he died and came back has changed. Initially, Coal died defending a village from two demon-creatures (maybe dragons?), and killed one of the two demons. The surviving demon, who was the killed demon's brother, vowed revenge against Coal and intercepted him on his way to Valhalla/Sessrúmnir (Freyja's hall, looks like I never decided which).
This demon, named Fen, was the one who brought Coal back. He could also turn into a ship and control it and turn into a dragon with it (the oars became legs, the sail became wings, etc.). Coal came back with missing memories and had more of a blank personality.
Here's Fen in his demon form and a human form apparently:
Tumblr media
For some reason that I never wrote down, various god items were included on this boat. It wasn't just items belonging to the big three (Odin, Thor, and Freyr) but also Freyja and Frigg and Tyr, etc. The idea was Coal needed to find their human counterpart owners in Midgard to do...something. I originally wanted to do nine items, because nine is a magic number, but after discussing with a friend (hi, Hannah!), I quickly realized that was too much work. Fen was scrapped but the idea of the living figurehead lives on in Rollo.
So the number of items changed to three four and Loki became the main cause of everything. I think I avoided using Loki before because I didn't want my version of him to be compared to Marvel's or whatever, but you can't really do a story involving the Norse gods without Loki in there somewhere. So I just bit the bullet and not only used him, but made him a main character. I think he's different enough to stand apart from most other depictions of him.
Here's me trying to figure out how TMK's Loki should look:
Tumblr media
I realized early on he shouldn't look too refined, but also not as scruffy as the bottom drawings lol. I think when I realized he's not just "The Trickster" but also a father a lot of things fell into place. Also the feather cloak!
Tumblr media
One of the hard things about working on webcomics is how long they take to make, but that can also be a kind of benefit. When I first started TMK I just wanted to make a fun fantasy adventure comic with a bold art style (it's probably no surprise to say Cartoon Saloon's Secret of Kells and subsequent films have been a huge inspiration to me), but as time has gone on and the world has shifted, it's turned into an exploration of toxic masculinity and its effects on the self and the world.
Anyway here's some other older drawings!
One of the first Ibrahims. His design was settled almost immediately.
Tumblr media
Arne's design also came together pretty easily. I dunno what that old man at the top is for...
Tumblr media
Anyway I hope you've enjoyed this lil jaunt down memory lane. Thank you for your question and birthday wishes and, of course, for reading the comic. <3

If someone enjoys these movies, I can just recommend every movie from Cartoon Saloon.
It has everything: beautiful 2D animation, smart children as protagonists (who aren't forced into a hetero romance, don't worry) and in 4 out of 5 cases, beautiful fantasy.
And, most importantly, stories about children and their parents and parents who learn to listen and turn into better people in the process.
Please, give it a watch if you can. Wolfwalkers is on Apple TV+, My Fathers Dragon on Netflix and all movies on... those websites. Don't miss those movies, please. They are wonderful.
Tumblr media
“it's so much better than that though. It's about the children realizing they didn't understand the parents as well as they thought and the parents realizing that they had passed down generational trauma and both parties ending the trauma together paving way for a happier family. Honestly it's probably a result of more people getting therapy and our society getting more open with talking about mental illness” -FB comment

Animação irlandesa em destaque no Monstra 2024
Tumblr media
