We choose soulmates ourselves. Fate leaves that up to us. Maybe you get more than one, I know that I have. I got four.

Thots on wottg
non-spoilery general review: overall, i liked the book. the reasons why i liked it are the same reasons why i liked cotg. it’s just a silly low-stakes adventure for our main trio peppered with some sincere heartfelt moments. if you liked cotg, you’ll probably like this book too. it’s nothing life changing, but it’s fun.
i’m getting into spoilers under the cut:
okay i’m gonna start with the stuff i didn’t like:
1. NO NICO. okay i know i’m the nico guy so i’m very biased but that aside it genuinely baffles me why nico didn’t even make an appearance. they had a problem involving ghosts and didn’t even think about asking THE GHOST KING for help. it annoys me when authors make their characters ignore a glaringly obvious solution to their problems just for the sake of the plot.
i completely understand if rick doesn’t want nico to be a major character in any more books considering he literally got an entire book about him (and despite his fan-favorite status, he is still a side character), but at LEAST establish a reason for why he wouldn’t be able to help out with raising an army of ghosts from the dead. maybe he’s at camp jupiter visiting hazel. maybe he’s at a mythomagic tournament. SOMETHING.
at least he was mentioned unlike in cotg 😔
(EDIT: i wrote the above section before tsats 2 was announced. given the circumstances, i have officially forgiven rick for this specific transgression)
2. i wasn’t a fan of how annabeth was kind of getting “mom friend”ed. there were a few moments that came off like “percy and grover are just dumb boys and annabeth is the smart capable girl who keeps them in line” which is not an interpretation of their characters that i enjoy. but these moments were mixed in with others that showed them all working together as a cohesive unit with equal contributions from everyone, so it’s not like the entire book follows this thinking.
3. kind of related to the last one, there were quite a few “percy is dumb” moments in the story. or at least percy implying that he’s dumb. now to be fair, percy canonically does not think very highly of himself. it’s entirely believable that he just sees himself as some doofus and is surprised when people tell him that he’s smart. but idk, kinda rubs me the wrong way.
4. why so many pee references. like at some point it’s just excessive.
5. i will always be a hater of rick’s modern pop culture references. i think it’s an established fact that i’m not a fan of his decision to set his books in the “modern day” of whatever specific time they’re released. i just think the worldbuilding would be a lot better if he stuck to a time period.
6. of course, the typical rick riordan inconsistencies and continuity errors. at this point they’re so common they don’t bother me that much anymore, but they can still break my immersion sometimes and it’s just a tad annoying when there are multiple in one book. bro either needs to reread his books or find a better editor lmao.
okay, now for the stuff i liked!!
1. i really liked the cute domestic moments with the trio. i love that we get to see how close their bond has gotten over the years and how comfortable they are with each other. THEY ARE FAMILYYYYY
2. i thought a lot of the book was quite funny, especially with percy’s narration. his commentary with his classic snark and sarcasm really breathe life into the story. rick has always been very good at first-person narration and it’s still one of his major strengths as an author.
3. i like how the story is addressing how big of a deal leaving new york will be for percy. but it’s true that he’s not leaving home, he’s just expanding what “home” means to him. it really fits with the whole “we had one home, now we have two” idea from boo.
4. annabeth growing to be more silly and carefree as she’s gotten older means so much to me. this poor girl has been through so much and was forced to grow up so quickly so seeing her cracking jokes and being a little reckless is so nice to see. she’s healing :D
5. i liked the moments where the story slowed down to allow percy to have a heart-to-heart with grover. we don’t get nearly enough just percy-and-grover moments so the ones we do get are worth appreciating. it’s a great reminder that they have been best friends since the beginning of all of this and they truly care deeply for each other.
6. related to the previous one, but the moments where the plot slowed down in general and allowed percy to demonstrate his emotional intelligence were really great. he was the one who was able to get through to hecuba and gale because he was able to put himself in their shoes and make them feel understood. percy’s empathy is a huge part of his character that so many people in the fandom ignore so it was very nice to see it on display here.
7. like cotg, this was a fun and wacky low-stakes adventure, which is a welcome change of pace. it’s fun to see what everyone is like when they’re not in constant “save the world” mode all the time.
8. the story kind of builds off the message of cotg (“growing older is not only not a bad thing but it’s something to welcome and cherish”), because now that percy has embraced his future and growing older, he needs to figure out what he wants that to mean for him. a change in scenery, a change in people, these are all things that everyone needs to consider as they transition into adulthood. it’s scary to leave the familiarity of your old home and friends, but you’re not TRULY leaving if you put in the effort to maintain those connections. as a young adult starting to move into the next phase of their life (about to graduate, hopefully find a full-time job, might begin to consider moving out of my childhood home), this is a message that resonates a lot with me.
soooo yeah. it was fun, it was sweet, not groundbreaking but not necessarily trying to be. idk how often i’ll return to this book but i don’t regret reading it. peace and love on planet earth.

tell me about your fave avatar fic you've read! i don't mind spoilers! just rant at me :D
oh oh i have it bookmarked
Moments Like This by MashpotatoeQueen5 - its literally the cutest, fluffiest fic ever. it's set during the post-war negotiations and it's about the entire gaang being big brothers and sisters to aang, especially zuko, and convincing him to FINALLY GET SOME SLEEP BUDDY!!! and it ends with a freaking food fight and it's just so delightful and and full of hope despite the heavy topics that come up here and there and it's so soffft my heart went all squishy when i first read it and it's about familyyyyy and god it's one of my favourite fics EVER
and and another one, that's a series that i actually haven't finished reading yet but it's like my favourite ongoing fic rn:
Dragon of the Yuyan by 00AwkwardPenguin00 - it's an au where tiny zuko gets adopted by the yuyan archers post-agni kai and he still ends up rescuing aang when he's captured but then he joins the gaang and they become his found family and the story is amazing and like it keeps to the original but the diversions are all solved SO CLEVERLY and i love love love zuko who is the oldest of the gaang just being protective of everyone and kind of shy but also kind of a sarcastic little shit, it's such an awesome story and so cool too
that's it, thank you so much for asking friend

Hero's lips curved half-heartedly as they smiled and faked a chuckle, a chuckle that had become transparent to the villain, all of a sudden.
"You captured and brought me here in hopes of using me as an evident bait, kept me weak after you snatched me away right after a lost fight." They sighed, "but do you really think my agency would care enough to lose many over one?"
"Why not?" the villain asked, "here, we stay loyal. Those who are left behind are only left alone if they choose it for themselves, or we are there. So many people, so many strategies that we can come up with, just to get that one person out of captivity."
Hero sniffed, their stomach growled with hunger that was satisfied several hours ago by the smallest of morsels, their throat parched in thirst as they coughed and said, "we have a greater population to take care off and if one of the caretakers is lost with the wind, they are gone and the chores continue as they should."
"Have you ever noticed," they rasped, "how people who lose someone who they knew took care of them say something along: who'll be there for me now; and not anything other than what consists of them, them and only them." They shuddered, "I know that the context I'm implying isn't always true or that the uttered words have a lot of meanings and anguish hidden with them but," they stared at the villain weak eyes, too adamant on closing but couldn't because of how overwhelmed hero felt, "you can't tell me that someone at the agency or even amongst the mob I protect, harbors the sentiment I expect of them or more like, you expect from them."
"But," villain tried, this time with more sincere interest than just to know why no one was falling for the plan they had spent nights to arc, "we are literal villains, and if we have the decency to take care of those who work for us then why can't-"
"I know, okay," the hero interrupted monotonously. "Why can't the heroes do the same, especially for those who they see sitting among them, chatting, drinking and laughing, the same heroes who they treat in their healthcare centres or get treated from them alike, or those with whom they've shared their deepest secrets and have found solace and a source of comfort in, I know, okay? I really do but if there's something other than our deeds that make the two of us different, then it's this, villain," they smiled again and this time it was genuine, "that sets us apart, for no one is perfect."
With that the hero turned around and sat down clumsily on the humid, cold floor, their legs trembling with the groggy state their mind was in and the dirt, muck of the situation figuratively as well as literally coiled around their shivering frame; and midst this, all the villain could do was pass them a warm bottle of water and two freshly made sandwiches -through the bars, before they turned around and stomped away in what the hero believed was- anger.
After what seemed like hours, the hero heard a hurried slam of doors and footsteps before they heard a small click and a silhouette of a sturdy being -who- stepped inside their cell; and ofcourse, who could it ever be than the villain themselves? Hero sat straight, rubbing and lightly slapping their face to rid themselves of the remainder of sleep. Under normal circumstances or in moments of holding grudge or enacting revenge, they would've neglected the villain's presence but after their interaction about how this capture wasn't going to yield the results the villain desired, the hero presumed that there would definitely be something significant if the former was disturbing hero in the middle of the night.
The small yellow bulb in the corner of the cell luminated the villain's looming frame before they crouched down infront of the hero, a ginormous tablet clasped in their hand.
All the hero could do was open their mouth to ask the intent before villain flicked their fingers across the screen and practically shoved the tablet's screen near the hero's face.
Hero had expected to see a lot of things. Threats, mischiefs, their smallest hopes of liberty being snuffed out with vital evidences but instead, what they didn't expect was the villain showing them the live streaming of one of the most influential news channels in the state.
The camera showed a family of five -an older woman who clutched her husband in desperation as the other was on the verge of collapsing, uttering constant pleases of help. There was also a boy slighter younger than hero and a girl older than both of them, standing steadfast, with tears glazing their eyes but expressions set in firm determination.
"My sibling, they are one of the hero's of our state," the eldest claimed, "and they haven't returned in the last six days. Me and my family are worried sick and have constantly been contacting their agency but all we get is a cold shoulder!"
"Or someone saying that our requests are too trivial to be taken into consideration!" the youngest bellowed.
"Aren't the heroes protecting this state, civilians of this state too? They deserve protection just as others, especially from their agency!" The claims from hero's sister made the small crowd behind them exclaim in agreement.
The crowd. It was small, really meek but it was there and it consisted of so many faces the hero had different views about. Someone with whom they had their last conversation with before getting kidnapped, someone with whom they relentlessly argued, the people who held them when they were weak, people to whom they confided in when they needed a pillar to help them rise. Their friends, their family, some of them sobbing too much to be able to muster a single word; and others who stomped down on their tears to yell their demands in frustration, desperation, love and fear.
Someone was afraid for hero.
Someone wanted to protect them too.
And this march, given how small it was, it was nearly impossible for them and their issue to be telecasted on one of the most renowned news channels in the state. They were someone to be taken too lightly but despite of all the hurdles and inconsiderations, here they were, roaring for justice and an explanation.
The hero looked up at the villain in anguish, the flicker is the villain's eyes making them notice of how their eyes were welled up in bitter, hot tears, how their heart clenched in pain on seeing the people they love cry, how selfishly relieved they felt at being loved and finally, their physical weakness caught upto them as sobs wracked through their body, expressing exhaustion, revealing so many parts of themselves that they kept concealed for a long, long time.
Villain wasn't really in the position to offer comfort nor did they deserve the right to sympathize with the hero, not really. They were one of the preparators, no matter what the root cause of this situation was- so they did the only thing they could and that was guiding the hero out of the cell.
Hero's steps faltered but they persevered without villain's help. It was only when the villain tied a coarse cloth around their eyes to blindfold them -even before they could rid their eyes from the overflow of consistent tears- is when they gasped. Whether due to fear or shock, they had no idea but they felt the feeling dissipate when they heard the villain speak, calmly, just like they always did except this time, their tone carried a certain lenient tinge, one that helped them wrap their head around the situation.
"Having you here," the villain informed, "is a strenuous task itself, especially when you're not of any use or advantage to me, so," they tapped the blindfold, helping hero decipher the meaning of their words clearly, "I'll drive you back to the agency and drop you off to a secluded area nearby from where you can find your family's riots on an approx two-minutes of walking distance."
"Beware though, one wrong move from your end and I'll keep you in the cell to rot, no matter what kind of foul smell it leaves behind after you," the villain threatened and upon recieveing a nod of affirmation from the hero, they clasped the hero's hand, gently ushering them forward and guiding them through several hallways before helping them inside a car, buckling them up.
Through the entire car ride, not one spoke to the other, the silence was deafening but necessary and they both stood firm to the notion. Upon reaching the said area -from where the hero, really could hear the shouts of persistent marches, now, even louder and clearer- they were helped out of the car and just as they were about to remove the blindfold and stumble in the direction of love and warmth, they heard the villain whisper something, before bidding an ironic goodnight.
Those words. That sentence. It made hero feel the warmth similar to infinite hugs and caresses, from everyone they held dear and respected.
The villain had said so many things while guiding the hero from their cell.
"If only the agency cared enough, how lucky would I have been!"
"But I'm not someone who would keep a family waiting especially when I have nothing to gain from it."
Their words and the insensitivity behind each of them had stabbed them so many times, perhaps it wouldn't have hurt at all under normal circumstances where they both had equal platforms midst a fight- but at that moment it did hurt, extremely.
And despite of it all, the villain's parting words were like a soft caress, true and legitimate, even if it was the villain who said those words.
The hero smiled as they saw their family and friends and called out to them, tears streaming down their face as the tight knot of fear in their chest was slowly untied, replacing a warm rising sun, full of liberal promises.
The cause of those bidding words from the villain were what had led to these events, this freedom. Those words, the hero's loved ones were the evidence of how:
The hero, did have, heroes of their own too.
---
"I told you," hero said, trying to keep their voice steady.
"I don't understand," villain replied, leaning casually against the wall of the hero's cell, "why would no one come for you?"
"I'm a hero. We don't get heroes of our own,"

We have watched the entire tv show!!
They HATED the the stop motion bit in Death and me and our other Puppet Obsessed Friends shared a glance (metaphorically, this was all in a discord call) and waited for their reaction to Stain (equally visceral) and then we vibed to the end credits "when you meet a business man, you must shake him by the hand~"
"That's what FAMILY means to MEEEEE, and my FAMILYYYYY" and also they had a real wtf moment when Roy spoke "yum yum yum yum"
They cringed at Warren's "song" and thoroughly enjoyed the roast session that followed "He looks like a tumor!"
They cried about the felt plants getting knocked over when the train came through the fireplace, found the Mulhoven bit really charming until the crash, then was completely silent during the subsequent bit where reality crumbled until I commented about the clump looking super Out Of Place™ in the real world and how uncomfortable Red's actor must have been walking around outside in a felt onesie
They finally understand why I love Electracy and really enjoyed them all shredding on electric guitars at the end of that song, we made a joke about Yellow finally being medicated for ADHD, they cried about the felt plants some more, gave the most VISCERAL "AAEUGGH" sound when the Big Boys came on screen, shrieked at the Steak's cameo, found the Fridge Scene™ hella fruity, and flipped at an actual human person in dhmis
Upon finishing the series, they then went down a rabbit hole of reading theories left in the YouTube comments section of the show because we are Americans™ who don't have Channel 4
Thank you for watching me drag my friend into this lovely felt hellhole! This is what happens when someone let's me infodump to them about my hyperfixations!
I was talking about the guys in a discord call with my friend last night, said friend had only ever seen Creativity way back when, so they don't have a lot of context outside of what me or our other puppet obsessed friends have said
When I started talking about Duck, they were very concerned for multiple reasons, such as:
"What do you mean he's died three times?"
"Why does he have a kill count??? Why is the duck a serial killer??"
"He's got no organs?????"
"He's rabid-" "-He also has diabetes." "HE'S-"
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE'S A ZOMBIE???"
