(part 2) My dad caught COVID on the plane back. Which meant he couldn't attend the wedding-related "meetings" we planned with the parents. Which made him unbearable. Both sides were trying to make the whole thing as cheap as possible (the parents pay for weddings here)- the cheapest menu, venue, music, everything. I don't remember a lot of things from the planning. But at one point they got so overbearing and trying to undermine everything we just gave up. In our country, the bride's parents buy the wedding ring for her husband, and vice versa. We were so sick of their behavior, that we decided to get ridiculously expensive wedding bands since both sides wanted to show off how much money they had. Because they rushed everything, we ended up married 6 weeks after the proposal. There were about 30 people, all of them mandatory for weddings (there would have been more people if no one was in a rush but not everyone can get a last-minute plane ticket). I managed to get all of one friend to attend, my husband had no friends. Because the parents planned the guest list and we said only the core mandatory people, his parents didn't even ask if he would be inviting any friends. My parents paid for my dresses for the few different official events with the in-laws that tradition demands. My husband's parents (who again, knew about this for a year and a half already, were complaining they were running out of money) got him nothing. Official events include family dinner at my place, and family dinner at his place - only parents and siblings and their partners. Then we did the church ceremony with the 30 people, with a lunch at a restaurant afterward. The actual marriage certificate we got two weeks later on our actual anniversary, and we had lunch after with the 10 people in attendance. The restaurants were shitty both times. Since we lived out of town and were busy with work, our parents had to check which places we could book for the set date. They made a list of the cheapest places in town, and they're all cheap for good reason. Terrible interior, bad service, cheap food, and barely any space. They also made a list for the music, and did the same thing again - listed the cheapest bands which had like three people in them. Thankfully we handled the photographer so the photos were amazing. I worked with a florist for the decoration which made the place a bit nicer, but still pretty shit.

I never wanted a traditional wedding. I just wanted to skip the dumb and outdated traditions, get a marriage certificate, and have a small gathering at a nice venue. Well, we skipped most of the traditions. The traditions I hate include the young unmarried men in the family hiding the bride in her house and only giving her up in exchange for money from the groom and best man. There's shit like dancing on tables, a couple of other "money in exchange for the bride" things, and copious photos of the bride giving gifts to her future in-laws family members. After the wedding, everyone goes back to the groom's house where the bride is supposed to dip her finger in honey. oil? (I forget) and draw crosses on the door to her new home, and then the party continues. My MIL insisted I do that one, my FIL filmed it and sent it to my parents. Because no one went to the groom's house because we weren't doing that part.

I remember one conversation I had with my narcissistic grandma the day before, who insisted we still do all that "giving away the bride for money" in the restaurant itself. This is the same woman who pretended to have a psychotic break a week before the wedding and spent a few days in the hospital. We know she pretended because the doctors told us as much, but they still kept her for "observation" to calm her down. She pretended she didn't recognize anyone or anything, but was magically fine when my uncle called her up.

And then I was married and we spent the rest of the month living with my in-laws (as per tradition) to get all the documents sorted and get the marriage certificate. My parents gave us a huge chunk of money as a wedding gift, and his parents promised us half of the house they own (I have a recent story on this I'll share another time) as the other half would go to their daughter.

Living with them was when I learned how big my MIL's drinking problem was. She would go on these screaming rants about how my parents were master manipulators and planned everything how they wanted it to be, screaming at my husband for being weak-willed and getting fucked over according to her. My husband and I would go over to my parents, and the next day my MIL would be screaming about how we went over to get instructions on how to fuck up everything. It was even worse when she was drunk. We got everything with the documents sorted and got the hell out of dodge as soon as we could to our apartment. And we didn't speak to each other for a month and a half after that. Just trying to decompress and destress from the shitstorm we went through. When we finally started talking to each other again and started to relax, we spent a couple of weeks going over the shit that went down, which was stressful again. Finally, we went back to normal, the stress went away, and we both got incredibly sick. It was like the high adrenaline from the stress was keeping us going until we took a breather and we both crashed. While mine was a chronic flare-up, my husband's was a brand new thing and we spent the next four months going to over 40 doctors to figure out what it was. That's a whole 9 shitty shitty months that were supposed to be incredibly happy. We had tons of plans that we had to put off or completely cancel due to the drama from our families. And when the dust settled, and they tried to reminisce about the "wedding", all I told them was that I was just grateful to be invited. Because none of it was for me. The only things we got to organize were the photographer and the florist. It was like the random small tasks you would give to someone because they have free time and those things aren't too big of a deal so they can't fuck them up too badly. I only have a vague idea of why they were rushing everything - our original plan was to get the certificate and buy people lunch, we'd do the church ceremony and everything else at a later time when venues would be available, which was likely months later. We were planning on moving abroad, so everyone was likely panicking that we would never get married in a church if we didn't do it then and there. But these are just assumptions from throwaway things I've heard since then. Our travel agent actually had the dream little wedding that I had wanted a week after we did. The location, music, decor, menu, hell, even everyone's outfits and the weather, everything was perfect, just how I wanted it to be. I just wanna say I'm happy for her, even if I couldn't, I'm happy someone else got to do that whole idea. And I'm sure it took months of planning which we didn't have for some mysterious reason.

Oh, and as soon as the photos of us were shared online, I started getting phone calls from people asking if I was pregnant because it happened so fast. I started joking that I would start sending people my used tampons to just avoid coming up with an explanation of why the rush happened.

Speaking of pregnancy I just remembered, that as soon as we walked out of the church, my and his parents wished us a happy life and a baby as soon as possible. I laughed and told them that would require some sort of higher power because it was medically impossible at the time, and my dad said "Accidents happen".... Both sets of parents knew I had issues with my hormones that basically make me infertile until they're fixed. And I'm keeping some of them in check with birth control. So even if I stop taking it, I'm still infertile, I just don't get periods without birth control. But sure, accidents happen lmao

That's as much as I could summarize and remember, this happened almost two years ago. I'll be sharing more MIL-specific lore as soon as I can.

he just kinda shrugs and his voice is all quiet and he’s like “oh… it’s nothing important, i shouldn’t have mentioned it. sorry.”

he heads upstairs before he starts crying because jungkook like really got his hopes up??

and your music really speaks to him and he’s kind of developed this emotional dependence on your group and you guys never fail to make him smile and you always get him up when he’s feeling down and he just wishes that maybe he could somehow tell you all how important you are to him and how much you’ve done for him through your music and all!!

That’s got you wondering hasn’t it? Well … this is nowt to do with me going for a run. I’m not that daft. But I know someone who is. This weekend Mandie took part in the Spitfire 10k at RAF Cosford, which is an annual event designed to raise money for the RAF charity, specifically this year the RAF100 appeal. This is Mandie’s third year of completing the mammoth run around the RAF base so a massive well done to Mandie on completing the course and on getting her winners medal (and lovely associated t-shirt)

My contribution? Well, I went along to support her which was very nice of me as it meant getting up early on a Sunday morning. While she was doing all the running and such like, I went for a bit of a mooch around the museum. Shamefully, as it is no more than 10 miles from my house, I haven’t been here since my Dad was alive and he passed away in 1991 … Still, it was lovely to have a wander about and I will go back again for a proper visit very soon.

Funnily enough I saw a few planes. And some tanks. And missiles. As you do. Well at least you do at an RAF Museum anyway. Managed to pick up a nice ‘tubby pen’ and thermal mug to commemorate the centenary while I perused the shop too. Tidy.

I’m not completely against exercise. On Saturday morning Mandie and I did a nice lap of Attingham Deer Park, a short 3 miles stroll while the weather was nice. Because we made the opening of the park at 0800 we were blessed with seeing squirrels, rabbits, pheasants and lots of the lovely deer who make the park their home. Because I didn’t have my camera ready enough I only have gratuitous deer pics but you can imagine the other animals scampering about …

Because I haven’t quite lost the wanderlust (and because Mandie wants an excuse for time off work) we did another day out, this time to Powis Castle. Again, somewhere I haven’t been in years but it was fab and ended with a quick jaunt to Charlies where I managed to pick up some lovely Flamingo stationery. As you do.

And I managed some reading too. Go me huh? Book wise, I’ve been kind of good. Ish. Four from Netgalley but all for tours so necessity not indulgence. They were The Warning by Kat Croft; Tell Nobody by Patricia Gibney; Hush Hush by Mel Sherratt and one I can’t tell you about just yet, but it looks really good.

Book book wise I’ve been very good. Only two. First up was the preorder of the second Amy Winter book from Caroline Mitchell (so new it doesn’t have a cover yet), The Secret Child, and I also bought myself a hard back copy of The Way of All Flesh by Ambrose Parry.

Oh how I enjoyed this book. In it we meet newly qualified Doctor Will Raven who has somewhat of a questionable past and one which is coming back to haunt him right from the start. Full of mystery, murder and all things medical, and set in 1840’s Edinburgh, I simply flew through the reading of this book, loving the dynamic between Raven and housemaid Sarah, a young woman who was very much ahead of her time. I’ll be reviewing the book this week, but you can buy your own copy here. I don’t know why or how I’ve not read this before but I’m bloody glad I have now. Full of unbelievable unfortunate incidents, poor Jen’s life is turned upside down when she finally decides to give her long term loser boyfriend, Ed, the boot. You just … might not expect quite how much. This had me chuckling to myself and racing through the pages like the devil was at my heels. So, I am 18, and yesterday my cousin was planned to come in from the UK at the Sky Harbor Airport in, Arizona. Why some families are boycotting presents this year

Becki Svare has made a radical decision: She won’t buy any more Christmas presents.

It started a few years ago as an experiment with her extended family. The holiday season began as it often did, with a dozen family members drawing names out of a hat. But instead of buying gifts for each other, they had to come up with a meaningful experience to share with their designated person. Suggested price: $20 to $25.

Svare’s children took their aunts kayaking. Her brother took his 9-year-old nephew for a ride on his Harley-Davidson, then out for sushi and a trip to the local reptile center. Others went to the zoo.

“You had to be somewhat creative with it,” said Svare, a blogger who lives in DeLand, Fla., near Orlando. “But we all agreed that it was better than buying things people don’t need.”

Across the country, families are hearing a similar refrain: Fewer items, please. More experiences.

It’s a movement that has picked up steam in recent years, as part of a broader push away from consumerism. And even retailers are taking notice. Major chains like Best Buy, Apple and Nordstrom now incorporate cooking classes, photography workshops and even manicures inside their stores as a way to attract customers who want to do more than just shop.

This holiday season, retail analysts say there has been a discernible shift in gift-giving as Americans think beyond traditional presents. Nearly 40 percent of shoppers plan to give gift cards, event tickets or other “intangible” gifts, according to market research firm NPD Group. And although overall holiday spending is projected to rise about 4 percent to $680 billion this year, Americans say they will spend less on presents: an average of $608 on gifts for family, friends and co-workers, down from $621 last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

“We live in a world of abundance, where most of us just have too many things,” said Jeffrey Galak, a professor who studies consumer behavior at Carnegie Mellon University. “People are starting to realize that items really aren’t that important anymore.”

Also helping the movement: the lack of novel items at the store.

“A lot of retailers are carrying the same old stuff that they’ve been hawking for five years,” said Mark Cohen, director of retail studies at Columbia Business School. “People are saying, ‘Uncle Henry’s already got a black sweater--in fact he’s got two that still have the tags on--so why should we get him a new one?’ ‘Let’s do something else instead.’”

And, academics note, there has been no shortage of research in recent years to back up the idea that people derive more joy from experiences than goods. The trend has been good for the likes of StubHub. The online purveyor of sports, concert and theater tickets says sales of gift cards are up 50 percent so far over last year.

Celebrities, too, are increasingly speaking out against holiday consumerism. The actress Mila Kunis said in a recent interview that she and husband Ashton Kutcher wouldn’t be buying gifts for their children this year.

But vowing to cut back on presents is one thing--actually doing so can be a years-long process. It can be tough to get family members on board, and even the most dedicated of gift-boycotters can feel a tinge of panic when, a few days before Christmas, there isn’t much under the tree.

“Social norms can be a difficult thing to overcome,” said Ross Steinman, a professor of consumer psychology at Widener University in Chester, Pa. “If there is an understanding in your family that there should be a tower of gifts under your Christmas tree every year, it’s really hard to change that.”

It’s taken nearly two decades, but Alethea Smartt says her family has (mostly) stopped buying Christmas gifts.

The effort started back in 1999, she says, when she moved to New York to take a job as a flight attendant. She had a tiny apartment and traveled often, which meant she didn’t have room for extra items.

But convincing her family in Tennessee, where she grew up receiving a whopping two dozen gifts each Christmas, was a different story. She started slowly--or so she thought--suggesting a limit of one gift per person.

“I knew we couldn’t go cold turkey, but it was still a total disaster,” said Smartt, 43, a travel writer in Portland. “There were a lot of hurt feelings and tears. Even though we didn’t have money, it was really important to my parents to be able to buy us material things.”

Her mother, in particular, was crestfallen, she says.

But lately, she said, they’ve found a groove--and her mother, Diane Campbell, agrees.

A few years ago, Campbell surprised the family with new luggage--and a cruise to Alaska. Last year, she took her grandsons on a four-day trip to Chicago. She makes photo books for her daughters, and bakes cookies for her son-in-law.

“At first, it almost felt embarrassing,” said Campbell, 67, who works for a tour company in Nashville. “I’d always been so proud that I was able to give everyone so much during the holidays..”

But it’s getting easier, she said, although she does sometimes stash a couple of last-minute McDonald’s gift cards under the tree for her grandsons.

“I do still worry about it,” she said, “about finding ways to create that ‘Oh, wow’ moment.”

(Smartt’s husband, too, says he sometimes has trouble adjusting to the arrangement: “Around Dec. 24, I’ll start to think ‘Wait, do I have enough? Maybe I should go buy more,’” said Greg LaRowe, adding that he now stocks up on extra items like lavender soaps and other locally made items.)

Smartt, though, said she has no complaints.

“It’s gotten better every year,” she said. “We’ve gone from what I’d call excessive materialism to a few thoughtful gifts.”

After years of experimenting--dozens of gifts one Christmas, none another--Christi Chartrand, a home health-care worker in Brantford, Ontario, said she’s finally found a happy medium for her brood of eight, which includes three biological children, four adopted children and one foster child.

On Christmas morning, each child receives exactly three presents worth a total of $100. On birthdays, they get to choose between a birthday party or a $150 outing with mom or dad.

“Almost every single time, the kids ask for a date night,” she said, adding that they’ve gone shopping in Buffalo, visited CN Tower in Toronto, and taken a half-hour airplane ride near Niagara Falls. “They don’t even think twice about it anymore.”

Back in 2010, though, it was a different story. For years, she and her husband maxed out their credit cards to buy mountains of toys.

“We had to unbury the tree on Christmas morning because there were just so many gifts piled up around it,” she said. “And we found that our kids were just so ungrateful. It never seemed to be enough. They would open their presents and then say, ‘Now what?’”

The turning point came, she said, when her son unwrapped a present from an aunt. “He looked at her and said, ‘A book? That’s it?’” she recalled. “I was so mortified and said, ‘This has to change.’”

The following year, she and her husband took the family on a road trip to Florida and didn’t buy a single present. The kids were irked at first, she said, but quickly got over it. The following year, they settled on the three-gift compromise.

“We’re not trying to be radical,” she said. “We just want them to realize that it’s not a life requirement to open 1,000 presents on Christmas morning.”
