Tumblr media
gerard looked at himself in the mirror, he posed, and he posed, and he posed. they had just gotten their cheerleader costume and they put it on to see how it looked. he didn’t know how it looked, they pliked it for sure, but he wasn’t sure if it actually looked good on them.
“..mikey, does this look good?” gerard inquired as he turned to his brother. mikey looked up from his phone with a raised brow, “yeah, of course gee! it looks cute, plus it’s your style.” mikey complimented, “i mean, you look preppy. which is the look right?”
“i mean of course a cheerleader is preppy, mikey. but it’s a little more 1950’s kinda deal, like my nurse outfit.” they noted as they walked over to the mini fridge to grab a can of colombian coffee. “hey, isn’t that your third can of that coffee?” mikey commented. “oh come on, it’s not like it’s gonna kill me.. this’ll be my last one, i promise.” gerard was right about to pop it open, “gee, get some water instead.” mikey used that disappointed voice on them, gerard sighed before placing it back and grabbing a bottle of water instead. “where are the other two?”
“no clue, i think they went to get some sweets when you announced you’re getting dressed.” mikey looked back at his phone as he grabbed his can of bubbly and took a sip, gerard scrunched up his nose. mikey glanced up and held in a laugh, “oh don’t give me that look, i mean yeah they barely have flavor but come on.” mikey sighed out a laugh. “i can’t believe i didn’t raise you on good taste.” gerard shook their head as they opened the cap and chug a bit, mostly out of nervousness. “it’s alright gee, the fans are gonna love it. genuinely.” mikey reassured him, “i know… i mean i know, but there is still that anxiety..” gerard looked back at themself in the mirror, “what if this doesn't work as well as i hoped?”
“well that's silly.” gerard and mikey jumped as they turned to the door, mikey scowled at the cocky smile frank wore. ray looked just as done, but gave gerard a smile when he looked at him. “as frank said, that is silly, you look great and the fans will think the same!” the tallest member spoke up, gerard looked back at the mirror and smiled. “well let's do this then!” gerard finally decided.
gerard was looking at the band on stage from behind the curtain, they loved their performance. they could hear the crowd shouting when the band called out for my chemical romance, gerard felt their stomach twist. was it anxiety? was it excitement?
“you did incredible!” gerard exclaimed to the frontman, “oh, thanks man! i really appreciate that! you’re gonna be incredible as well,” the frontman began to walk away with his bandmates, “by the way, awesome look on you!” gerard stood there as he walked away before letting a smile grow.
“are you ready?” ray inquired to gerard as they cleaners began to brush off the stage, he looked over at ray before looking out to the crowd, full stadium. “y… yeah, i’m ready.” gerard agreed, ray smiled before patting his dear friend’s back. gerard smiled back as the other two began to get prepared by tampering with their guitars, ray grabbed his guitar and looked out. gerard took a breath in before exhaling.
”alright, let’s do this.”

Y’know, I hate the fact that lately I’ve been in a really dark place mentally. Everyone talking about how singing Famous Last Words at a concert is so cathartic, when for me it was one of loneliest moments in my entire life. An entire stadium of people singing together, seemingly meaning every word, and I felt like I was lying. I had to stop singing, probably the only time I wasn’t singing the entire concert. I remember how I felt, the music so loud it thundered in my hollow stomach. My voice silent in a crowd of hundreds. I felt guilty. Still do a bit.
I’m doing a bit better than I was a few weeks ago, but still…

And as the swarm it calls, we lay in the foundations...
Excited to post the piece I illustrated for @mcrswarmzine inspired by MCR's reunion tour show in Albany, NY on August 30th, 2022!
This show was my first time seeing the band since their last show at Bamboozle 2012 and it was truly one of the best nights of my life. <3
I'm so grateful to have been a small part of this project. So much love and effort went into the making of this zine and it shows. It is so meticulously crafted and considered and has so many beautiful artwork, writing, and interviews.
Digital copies are still available at their website and all proceeds will go to the charity Black and Pink.
I love My Chemical Romance and their fan base eternally ✨

long, sappy, emotional roller coaster about my chemical romance incoming, as someone who has a deep emotional connection and love for the black parade is dead and attended wwwy october 19th
if you had told little 12-year-old kinley ‘mychemicalromance’ pletzer (who cried in her bedroom on march 23rd, 2013 over my chemical romance breaking up), that
- at 19, my chemical romance would announce their reunion tour and she would get tickets to see them live
- at 22, they would release new music
- at 24, she would get to relive all of her lonely memories of watching, memorizing, and performing “the black parade is dead,” live from mexico city, in her bedroom all over again, but this time, live, with my chemical romance right in front of her face, along with thousands of other people (who probably did the exact same thing), i think that sad little kid would’ve thought you were making fun of her by joking about something that could never possibly happen in this lifetime.
the black parade is an album that means so much to me and a lot of other people out there on this rock floating through space. it’s a love letter, or a hate speech, whatever mood you’re in, to and about grief. mourning a person, a love, a mindset, a dream, your past self, your present self, your future self, and all of the decisions you did or did not make that led you to your grave. it’s heavy, it’s dark, it’s sad, it’s emotional, it’s haunting, it’s painful, and it hurts to listen to.
sometimes.
other times, it’s a lot of fun and an incredible masterclass on storytelling and creativity, which is probably the best reason i can think of as to why i give such a shit about this goofy band! it’s hopeful, it’s nostalgic, it’s reminiscent, it’s beautiful, it’s thoughtful, it’s loving, and it fills you with a comfort that is not unlike a hug from your favorite person.
it is filled with uncertainty and it is filled with pride. it is so heartbreaking and devastating to experience from front to back, time and time again, but i will come back to it, always. this album just graduated high school, it’s time for it to go off and see the world and make a name for itself, can you believe it? all that time spent being replayed and revisited by a bunch of sad, lonely, heartbroken kids, who didn’t know if they would ever see tomorrow, but did. maybe some of those kids didn’t see tomorrow, but this was there for them.
there are so many people i share my love for this album and this band with, and a fraction of them were there last night. i am so so grateful to have made it to this year, in this life, with this band and it’s fans, who are nothing, if not persistent and loyal. i have never felt more seen and understood by anybody more than i do by my chemical romance, and i know that sounds stupid and cliche and parasocial, but it’s true. i said this in 2022, but they have been there for me when nobody else was, when i didn’t think i would see tomorrow, when i was sad, when i was happy, when i was lonely, when i was angry, and when i just wanted to feel loved, they were there. this may not make sense to a lot of people, but they are my best friends, my brothers, my dads, my soulmates. in order to love and know me, one must, inevitably, know them, too, and that fills me with an incredible joy that has been blooming for 13 years. those 13 years have been up and down, left and right, my highest highs, my lowest lows, and everything in between, but they’ve always been there and they will continue to be there long after they’ve gone for good.
i just want to look this kid in the eyes and tell them everything will be okay. not perfect, not even great, but okay. you get through all of the bad stuff all by yourself, with no guidance at all, and i’m sorry about that, but i am so proud of you. you’re such a strong kid. you’re so much more than that, but that’s the most important part of you. i’m here for you, now, little kinley. 24-year-old, grown adult kinley does everything in their power to make you happy. you never quit this band and you will love them with the same passion and fire forever. you never let the other kids making fun of you for liking the scary music get to you. the one sparkle you never lost was this one. they’re gonna come back and you even get to see them. TWICE! something you probably never imagined, i’m sure. i love you so much, kid. i’m sorry it took me so long to figure out. you’re my everything <3

what's mcr
My Chemical Romance (commonly abbreviated to MCR or My Chem) is an American rock band from New Jersey. The band's current lineup consists of lead vocalist Gerard Way, lead guitarist Ray Toro, rhythm guitarist Frank Iero, and bassist Mikey Way. They are considered one of the most influential rock groups of the 2000s and a major act in the pop-punk and emo genres, despite the band rejecting the latter label. Founded in September 2001 by Gerard, Mikey, Toro, and drummer Matt Pelissier (and later joined by Iero), the band signed with Eyeball Records and released their debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, in 2002. They signed with Reprise Records the next year and released their major-label debut, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, in 2004. Shortly after the album's release, Pelissier was replaced by Bob Bryar. The album was a commercial success, attaining platinum status over a year later. The success of the band's previous albums was eclipsed by that of their 2006 rock opera concept album, The Black Parade. A major commercial success, its lead single "Welcome to the Black Parade" topped the UK singles chart. The album solidified the band's following, despite negative coverage in the Daily Mail generating controversy. The band's fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, was released in 2010. Bryar departed the band prior to the release of the album, and in 2012, they added touring keyboardist James Dewees. In 2012 and 2013, the band released a series of singles they had recorded in 2009 under the collective title Conventional Weapons. My Chemical Romance announced its breakup on March 22, 2013. In 2014, a greatest hits album titled May Death Never Stop You was released and a tenth-anniversary reissue of The Black Parade was released in 2016. On October 31, 2019, the band announced a reunion show, which took place in Los Angeles on December 20, 2019. In January 2020, they announced additional shows and a Reunion Tour, which commenced in 2022 after a two-year postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic and concluded in early 2023.

Frank Iero On My Chemical Romance’s Legacy: “That’s A Beautiful Thing”
Discussing the new audiences who came to the band’s reunion tour in 2022, he said “That band got bigger than we were when we stopped just by being away. That doesn’t happen all the time. It’s bizarre that it still strikes such a chord with people. There was this organic growth that was happening without our knowledge, without us really doing anything. I’d like to think that is testament to the art that we put out and that it withstands the test of time and still resonates. We put a lot of work into it and I’m proud of 99.9% of everything we did. But it’s shocking to me, man.”
He continued “I remember as a kid learning about some of the bands that became my favourites, The Misfits or Black Flag, and realising they weren’t around anymore. I would get handed down these mixtapes, usually by a friend’s older sibling or it was stuff that I found in my Dad’s record collection. When you find it like that, it becomes yours, whether you were there for it or not. You live your experience through it, and that’s what’s happening with My Chem. I think that’s a beautiful, beautiful thing.”
Our new interview looks back on Frank’s entire career, from Pencey Prep to MCR, his solo work and forming L.S. Dunes. Read it inside the latest issue of Rock Sound.
