What if Carmen Sandiego Characters’ Birthdays were the same as their VA’s?
Ever wondered what your favorite character’s birthday is? I noticed that none of the characters have any canon birthdays (please tell me if i’m wrong), so why not make them the same as their voice actors?
Note: I searched up every character’s VA for this. Some of them i couldn’t find a birthday, so they aren’t included in this list. Some characters also have the same birthdays due to having the same VA, or it’s just a coincidence. Also, Mime Bomb has no VA so.. he has no birthday i guess

Cutie Reviews: Doki Doki Oct 17
Okay cuties, this is my final October review. Thank goodness because I’m still really behind. It’s going on December and I didn’t even cover my November reviews yet.
I’m still sick btw. I wanted to have this done days ago but a “pet issue“ came up that distracted us around Friday and Saturday, then on Sunday I got a “surprise day trip away from the house”. We went to the zoo, which was a lot of fun but I feel like it extended my illness considering it was about 40 degrees out and I’ve been coughing a lot more. Now as its Tuesday I might have strep throat- but good news, we found medication that has really helped me (and puts me to sleep for like 9 hour intervals) so I’m good to go!
The zoo was also a lot of fun :3 I’ve always been in LOVE with animals and took a lot of pictures.
Like last year, we’re treated to a HALLOWEEN themed box (Also officially titled “Creepy Cuties” ♥). If you would like to see how it compared to last years, you can visit my review of that crate:
https://cutiecrates.tumblr.com/post/155716993687/review-doki-doki-oct-2016-box-11
Just a word of precaution though- my reviews were very new at the time so I wasn’t very good at it... I’m not saying I am now, but I can see improvement.
Also, like last year we are treated to art by one of my favorites: Tokimekiwaku, who makes the yandere themed visual novel series I’m a big fan of, Liar Liar.
Now before I officially start with the review I wanted to show everyone the special themed boxes they gave us:
I’m pretty sure this wasn’t done with last years crate, so I really like this touch of Halloween themed designing. I hope we get one for Christmas too~
Now, because I forgot to take pictures of it I’ll quickly cover the Suteki Crate items. I know I’ve been forgetting them as of late and I have no idea why.
In this months crate, we could get: a Maple Leaf Hello Kitty plush, Cardcaptor Sakura life sized wand, Jiji plush and carrier from Kiki’s delivery service to match the included Kiki headband, a Mochi-style pumpkin plush, a My Melody lantern, New Nintendo 2DS XL with Kingdom Hearts 3D, and a Spirited Away music box.
I’m already predicting that by the end of this review, I will have favored this crate to last years. I was in love with quite a few items from it, but I’m excited to compare the two~
First we get some of these adorable and fun Sanrio Gift Bags. You get 8 in total and each feature the same, colorful mascots donning their Halloween best on clear pouch-sized bags. You can use them for yourself or use them to show someone a little Halloween spirit, and they could also work as a last-minute emergency pack if you’re in a hurry or run out of normal food storage packs.
Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
I didn’t end up using these for Halloween. My plans of getting a bunch of “fun“ things to give away didn’t happen this year so we only gave away a piece or two of candy each, nor did I have anyone special to use them on. For now i’ll be hanging on to them, but I’m in love with the fact that A: They’re practical, and B: they’re SANRIO, these are the perfect additions for a cutie kitchen!
Speaking of we also got these Doki Doki Halloween Mugs featuring Tomomi and Nuki ♥
For a while I wasn’t too excited with the original Doki Doki items we were getting, I mean I like them, but at the same time we were promised apparel and fun accessories and it felt like we weren’t getting that in comparison to what we got last year.
Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
While I’m not the type who uses a mug ALL the time, I do use them for DIY, crafts, and when I’m sick like now...
I also LOVE how cute the design it :D it’s perfect for Halloween or any time of the year! I love the pop of color on the design, and the mischievous but cutesy styling to create a precious, unique piece for the Doki Doki branding.
The cute accessories keep on coming~
We also got a pair of these one-size fits all Tsum Tsum Socks, available in 9 different designs x3 considering I’m obsessed with Minnie I’m happy to have gotten this one. But there is irony here, I already have a pair of socks that look exactly like these- minus the tsum tsum.
Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
The socks are ultra-soft and comfortable. I’ve worn them a few times already and I’m in love with how cute they look paired with my strappy shoes. They end directly beneath the ankle- something that would have bugged me to no end as a child. For some reason I HATED socks like that.
However, I do have my concerns with the socks. It’s a little bit silly, but I’m actually worried about snagging issues because of how soft they are. As stupid as this is going to sound, I’m also bothered by the discolored spots.
I’m weird like that I know. But their paws should be Black or White, not skin-tone.
We also got this kawaii Rabbit Ragdoll Keychain. The perfect spoopy accessory for costumes, cuddling, or to give your own doll a buddy:
I’m not sure what I’ll name her just yet, Patches feels a little cliche.
Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Now in comparison to the 2-types of plush items we got last year this one falls a tiny-bit flat. I don’t feel any sort of spookiness to it- however, I’m also a sucker for ragdolls and things inspired by them so I still really like it ♥ I know Yoko got attached to it fairly quick.
Next is our monthly Hoppe-Chan, who once again decks herself out in fun, colorful Halloween charms. She was available in orange or purple with 3 different designs, each with a pumpkin, bat, or witches hat ornament. You can probably tell which one I got right?
Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥
I wish I got/saw what the bat one looked like, I love bats :D but the reason I’m rating this one a bit lowly is because I think I actually prefer last years to this one. While I like this ones colors... it looks like a cheap knock-off to the previous one. As a stand-alone Hoppe-chan I like it enough, and I love the idea of them introducing alternate style/color varieties lately, but when you compare to the two I feel like last years was superior.
We’re approaching our final few items now, and they go together wonderfully!
First we get some Cat Paws, which as an avid cat-lover I entirely approve of ♥ I always wanted a pair of realistic cat paws gloves so I was beyond happy to pull these out x3 I wore them for Halloween and paired them with the next item we got.
Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
They’re soft and thick, very plush with details and molding around the paws to create an almost realistic paw.
The only real issue is that they are a bit impractical, sadly. My fingernails were so crammed up in them they were kind of bent and a little sore. Not only that but the way the hand is shifted in there could be uncomfortable to some, and you can’t do very much with them on. But that’s kind of a given, isn’t it?
Ultimately I love them, but they might not be for everyone...
See, these are the purrrfect accessories for the kitty paws- or on a day you feel like being a cat ♥
Which is pretty much every day for me~
These are adorable, realistically proportioned Neko Mimi/Cat Ears. Featuring a black color scheme and pink undertones, a bell on each ear, and a ribbon.
But once again there is some irony.
I JUST bought a pair of cat ears from Hot Topic on my birthday (October 15th if you forget ;3). However, they were grey with alternate pink ribbons on them, so I wore those to work and these black ones for Halloween.
Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
I LOVE these ears! They’re so cute! I’m obsessed with black cats in particular, so they are really fun to wear. They don’t look weird on the head at all, they look practically natural. However there is one tiny little issue... one of my bells don’t work T^T the little thingy inside fell out I guess, or its stuck.
It’s a tiny bummer, but one I’m willing to live with.
♥ Cutie Ranking ♥
Content - 4 out of 5. I loved everything, and the items were great in general :D in terms of pricing I felt like it was well worth it in comparison to last years box (we got a lot of cheaper, small items if you didn’t check out that entry)
Theme: 5 out of 5. It’s dead-on Halloween! Even the box reflected that!
Total Rank: 14 out of 15 Cuties. I remember ranking the prior years box as being fairly high on my scale- but in all honesty back then I didn’t know what I was doing. I think by now I’d actually rate it within a 7-9 range. The items were much cheaper and on a small sale in comparison to this crate, and while I admit I love the plush, hair clips, and Hoppe-chan from last years, I overall prefer this one.
 Cutie Scale ♡
1. Tomomi and Nuki mug - I HAD to give them the top spot this year. I love how the design not only fits the cute and mischievous side to Doki Doki crate, but I like how it clearly says Halloween!
2. Cat Ears - Kawaii ♥ I love the additional accessories
3. Cat Paws - generic sure, but I LOVE kitties and I always wanted a pair. The detail on them is really nice too.
4. Sanrio Bags - I love the colorful pops of halloween colors and styles!
5. Hoppe-Chan - usually ranks a lot higher, but she’s kind of plain this year...
6. Rabbit Ragdoll - A big generic as well. I love the mix of patch fabrics used though and it looks so precious~
7. Tsum Tsum Socks - in comparison to the other items they feel a bit generic. They don’t really feature any special designs or Halloween-esque details.
Okay Cuties, that does it for another review :P I’m hoping to hurry and get my November’s done, but I’m confident that I can cover them and my December crates no problem!
Until next time, stay Cute ♥

The NFL’s top trade candidates, broken down into 4 groups
It could be a busy trade market ahead of the Oct. 29 deadline and we’ve got a list of players who could be on the move.
Not all trades are the same.
Cornerback Jalen Ramsey was traded to the Rams because he was fed up with playing for the Jaguars. Emmanuel Sanders was sent to the 49ers because the Broncos knew the 32-year-old receiver was going to leave in free agency anyway. The Falcons shipped receiver Mohamed Sanu to the Patriots so they could start to dig their way out of a tricky salary cap situation.
With the trade deadline coming on Oct. 29, more deals are undoubtedly on the way.
Some teams need to get younger, others need to save money, and there are a few that just want value for players who won’t be on the team much longer.
Here are a couple dozen players who could be on a different roster when November begins:
Players headed for free agency
The trade deadline comes right around the midway point of the NFL season. For players on the final year of their contract, that leaves them less than 10 games away from becoming a free agent.
For some, it’s inevitable. Last year, Golden Tate was on the final season of his contract with the Lions and an extension looked unlikely. His 31st birthday was on the horizon and the younger duo of Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay was filling the rest of the depth chart. It made sense for Detroit to send Tate to the Eagles for a third-round pick rather than wait for him to leave in the offseason.
Here’s a list of players set to hit free agency in March, who might not be in the long-term plans of their current team:
Robby Anderson, WR, Jets
New York’s inconsistent deep threat has been tough to figure out so far in his career. Now, he’s averaging just 2.8 receptions per game in 2019. That lack of production may push the Jets to move on from Anderson. The booming market for receivers makes now a good time to do it.
Vic Beasley, DE, Falcons
In 2016, Beasley was an All-Pro with 15.5 sacks. In the 37 games since, he has 11.5 sacks. He’s set to hit free agency in the offseason, but the Falcons are mostly trying to trade Beasley because he just hasn’t been very good. Perhaps another team can convince itself that the 2016 version of Beasley can return.
Kenyan Drake, RB, Dolphins
Miami is ditching players left and right, so it wouldn’t be surprising if it decided to do the same with Drake. He’ll be a free agent in 2020, and hasn’t scored a single touchdown in 2019. He finished 2018 with 1,012 yards from scrimmage and nine total touchdowns. If the Dolphins don’t plan on re-signing him, he should be another tank casualty.
Melvin Gordon, RB, Chargers
A long holdout that began in the summer didn’t end until Gordon reported to the team in the last week of September. Prior to that, Gordon was allowed to pursue a trade, but couldn’t find a viable option. Now that he’s averaging 2.3 yards per carry, the Chargers may be more willing to play ball with a team interested in acquiring the two-time Pro Bowl running back.
Chris Harris, CB, Broncos
Harris could fit in a few different categories here, but the No. 1 reason the Broncos should part with the 30-year-old cornerback is that he’s probably leaving after the 2019 season anyway. Harris even seemed to say as much to reporters earlier this year. A lot of teams could use secondary help, and the Broncos aren’t contending for a Super Bowl this year anyway.
Yannick Ngakoue, DE, Jaguars
Joey Bosa and Ngakoue are the only two players from the 2016 draft class with more than 30 career sacks. Ngakoue held out for a contract extension in the offseason and didn’t get one. He later told reporters “[the Jaguars] had a chance to sign me for a long-term deal but it didn’t get done.” With his contract expiring in March, Jacksonville could add even more draft capital by trading the 24-year-old pass rusher for a king’s ransom.
Leonard Williams, DE, Jets
Quinnen Williams is the future of the Jets defensive line and that makes a big extension for Leonard Williams unlikely — especially when he has zero sacks through six games. The 1-5 Jets could look to get what they can get for the former top-10 draft pick.
Players who are too expensive
It’s always smart to see the big picture. Spending to acquire or keep talented players is usually a good idea, but eventually the money runs out. Even if a team isn’t near the salary cap limit, it still makes sense to cut down on expenses whenever possible.
For teams that are especially strapped for cash — or maybe just ones that are thinking about the long haul — the trade deadline can be a good way to get rid of their most cumbersome contracts.
Geno Atkins, DT, Bengals
Atkins has been to the Pro Bowl seven out of the last eight years, so the Bengals probably don’t want to see him leave Cincinnati. But the defensive tackle will also be 32 in March and he’s due to count $14.2 million, $14.8 million, and $16.05 million against the salary cap in the next three seasons. A rebuild is on the way for the Bengals and getting value for a great player while ditching his contract could be a starting point.
Le’Veon Bell, RB, Jets
New Jets general manager Joe Douglas wasn’t the one who thought a four-year, $52.5 million deal for Bell was a good idea. That was Mike Maccagnan, who was fired as GM in May. Jets coach Adam Gase reportedly didn’t like the price tag of Bell. That’s why it wouldn’t be that weird if the Jets shipped away their prized free agent after only a handful of games.
Jamison Crowder, WR, Jets
Crowder was another Maccagnan acquisition earlier in 2019 on a three-year, $28.5 million deal. That’s a lot for a receiver with a career-worst 9.3 yards per reception and still no touchdown receptions. Considering the return Emmanuel Sanders and Mohamed Sanu got on the trade market, the Jets could be better off sending Crowder’s contract somewhere else.
Devonta Freeman, RB, Falcons
Only four running backs have a higher average salary than Freeman, he’s not playing up to that price tag. Freeman’s averaging 3.5 yards per carry and hasn’t had a 1,000-yard rushing season since 2016. With salary cap hell coming soon for the Falcons, it’d be a win for the team if it could find a team willing to take a chance on Freeman.
Von Miller, LB, Broncos
Denver would be wise to burn things down and start over. It already traded Sanders, but the real swing for the fences would be dealing away Miller. He’s due to count more than $25 million against the cap next season and $22.125 million in 2021. Miller turns 31 in March and only has 2.5 sacks so far in 2019. If a team comes with a lofty offer for the Super Bowl 50 MVP, the Broncos could really kick start their rebuild.
Trumaine Johnson, CB, Jets
The third Jets player in this section is the hardest to trade. Johnson got a five-year, $72.5 million deal fr in 2018, but now he has a tenuous grasp on a starting role in New York. If the Jets can convince a team to take on Johnson’s salary, they’d likely take peanuts in return just to ditch the contract.
Josh Norman, CB, Washington
The days when Norman was considered one of the premier shutdown cornerbacks in the NFL are long gone. Now he struggles to stop anyone and is costing Washington points. He’s due to count $15.5 million against the team’s cap in 2020, but will likely be cut before he ever sees that salary. Washington would love if it could get another team to take on that problem instead.
Desmond Trufant, CB, Falcons
Another solution to the Falcons’ aforementioned upcoming salary cap disaster would be to trade Trufant. Unlike Freeman, the veteran cornerback is still playing pretty well. He’s just not playing well enough to warrant eating cap hits between $14.15 million and $16.15 million in the next three seasons. Plenty of other teams would be capable and willing to pay that price, though.
Players who are too old
It always feels awkward calling someone old when they’re only around 30, but the sports world is a weird place.
You: "I'm only 35, I have my whole life ahead of me." Sports Broadcaster: "Here comes the oldest player in the league. He's 32. A miracle."
— Troy Johnson (@_troyjohnson) December 6, 2016
For many teams — especially ones that know they have rebuilding to do — the trade deadline can be the right time to offload aging veterans and see what their young replacements can do.
Carlos Dunlap, DE, Bengals
Spoiler alert: Here’s the first of three consecutive Bengals on this list. The team’s Super Bowl window is 100 percent closed, and there are a few older players on the roster who could fetch value on the trade market. Dunlap, who turns 31 in February, is one of those players after six straight seasons with at least 7.5 sacks. He’s not going to make the Bengals a contender, but a team already set up for a playoff run could use his help.
Tyler Eifert, TE, Bengals
While he’s only 29, the 2015 Pro Bowler is about 38 in football years. Eifert missed 15 games in 2014 due to an elbow dislocation, six games in 2016 with an ankle injury, four more games in 2016 due to back injuries, 14 games due to another back surgery in 2017, and 12 games in 2018 with an ankle fracture. He’s been healthy in 2019, but not very productive. The Bengals would be fine moving on with C.J. Uzomah and Drew Sample at tight end.
A.J. Green, WR, Bengals
The last of the Bengals trio is the one they insist isn’t for sale. Green doesn’t quite have Eifert’s injury history, but he’s now missed 20 games (and counting) since the beginning of the 2016 season. Green turned 31 in July and is probably the most valuable asset on the Bengals roster. If Cincinnati decides it’s rebuild time, trading Green makes sense.
Reshad Jones, S, Dolphins
The only other player on the Dolphins roster with at least 10 seasons under his belt is Ryan Fitzpatrick. Miami is tanking and there’s not much logic in keeping around aging veterans. There aren’t many tradable players left for the Dolphins, but Jones is one. Dumping his $15.63 million and $14.55 million cap hits in the next two seasons is just a bonus.
Patrick Peterson, CB, Cardinals
Around this time last year, Peterson requested a trade out of Arizona. He has since apologized and the Cardinals have turned away callers interested in trading for the eight-time Pro Bowler. Calling him old is a stretch, considering he’s 29 and has never missed a game due to injury, but getting younger would be the only reason for the Cardinals to move on from Peterson. He’s still a great player and a relatively affordable one too.
Players who just don’t fit
Sometimes a player just doesn’t work on a certain roster. A scheme change could make someone a square peg trying to fit in a round hole, and a crowded depth chart could force a player out of town.
The Patriots didn’t really want to trade Jimmy Garoppolo in 2017, but Tom Brady wasn’t going anywhere, so eventually their hands were tied.
Here are a few players who just don’t fit into the plans of their current team and would be better off somewhere else:
O.J. Howard, TE, Buccaneers
The 2017 first-round pick looks like the odd man out of the Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich offense in Tampa Bay. After scoring 11 touchdowns in his first two seasons and recording 56.5 yards per game in 2018, Howard’s numbers have tanked in 2019. He’s only averaging 29.3 yards this season and hasn’t caught a single touchdown. The Buccaneers would benefit from sending Howard to an offense that actually uses tight ends.
Josh Rosen, QB, Dolphins
Miami gave up a second-round pick during the 2019 NFL Draft to see if Rosen could develop into its quarterback of the future. It’s hard to imagine the Dolphins still think that’s a possibility. They’re careening toward the top pick of the 2020 NFL Draft (or at very least, close to the top) and will probably take a quarterback there. While Rosen’s value is hurt by his 52.0 passer rating in 2019, there are certainly teams that wouldn’t mind seeing what they can get out of a top 10 pick who’s still just 22.
Solomon Thomas, DE, 49ers
The San Francisco defensive line is really freakin’ good and it’s not because of Thomas. The No. 3 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft is just a rotational player with DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, and Ronald Blair all outplaying him. Thomas is expendable and could have a bigger role in a defense that isn’t so stacked up front.
Trent Williams, OT, Washington
Washington doesn’t really want to trade Williams, but it doesn’t have much of a choice. The left tackle appears content to sit out for as long as it takes for the team to send him elsewhere. Washington isn’t in a rush to get a deal done, but sooner is better than later.

A few minutes later I got a text telling me that she was too hurt by my behavior and that she didn’t want to speak to me. I read the text once and deleted it. Then I erased her contact info and blocked her on all social media sites. It was without a doubt one of the hardest things I have ever done. It went against every instinct I had. I wanted to pick up the phone and apologize and try to soothe things over. But I knew that I couldn’t. Not without me regretting it down the line. I miss her every day. She would’ve loved my new found devotion to One Direction. She would’ve loved going to see Harry with me, she would’ve helped me get tickets to the Oct. concert in Atlanta. She wouId’ve gone to see Niall, and Louis and Liam. I still see something or hear something and pick up my phone to call her before I remember that I can’t. It still sucks. I miss her.

As Youth Suicides Climb, Anguished Parents Begin To Speak Out
Alec Murray was 13. He enjoyed camping, fishing and skiing. At home, it was video games, movies and books. Having just completed middle school with “almost straight A’s,” those grades were going to earn him an iPhone for his upcoming birthday.
Instead, he killed himself on June 8 — the first day of summer break.
Caleb Stenvold was 14. He was a high school freshman in the gifted and talented program. He ran track and played defensive cornerback on his school’s football team. Just two months into high school ― and four months after Alec’s suicide — Caleb killed himself on Oct. 22.
The teenagers, both from Reno, Nevada, didn’t know each other. But their families now do, bonded by loss. Their parents are haunted by what they don’t understand: why.
They ― along with mental health experts, school leaders and researchers — are trying to understand why suicide by children ages 10 to 14 has gone up and up. The suicide rate for that age group almost tripled from 2007 to 2017. Newly released 2018 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show a 16% increase over the previous year.
“Every family needs to have a conversation about suicide with their children — starting very young. Don’t just spring it on them when they’re 10,” says Paige Murray.(Lauren Casto for KHN)
While experts point to a host of explanations for the alarming rise, scientific proof about cause isn’t conclusive. Some research shows correlations with social media use, cyberbullying and the internet, but studies citing them as a suicide cause are less decisive.
The parents of Caleb and Alec believe impulsivity ― very common in teens because their brains aren’t fully developed — played a role in their suicides.
Kerri Countess, Caleb’s mother, called his suicide “totally unexpected and unimaginable.” He was the youngest of her five sons.
Paige Murray said son Alec “showed no signs of mental distress or depression or anxiety.”
“We think it was an incredibly impulsive act by a hormonal young man,” she said, noting that Alec’s stellar grades were posted online the day of his suicide.

Caleb’s parents, Storm Stenvold and Kerri Countess, created a website dedicated to preventing youth suicide by promoting conversation and human connection.(Lauren Casto for KHN)
Experts suggest that our celebrity culture, where suicidal thoughts are sometimes romanticized or normalized, also plays a role. Alec’s parents and Caleb’s parents say they need to speak out and warn other families.
When Caleb died, “we wanted everyone to know he died of suicide because if it can happen to my child who was not bullied and did not fit into the reasons people kill themselves, it can happen to anyone,” Countess said. “It was an impulsive and immature act.”
Amy Kulp, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based National Center for the Prevention of Youth Suicide, said youth, in particular, “have very few experiences with dealing with outside stressors” and “tend to be quite impulsive.”
“If they have a precipitating event like they are bullied or don’t make a team or a friend stops talking to them or something is on social media that they’re embarrassed about,” she said, “they don’t know they will get through it.”

Kulp said the rise in suicide among the youngest adolescents has spawned prevention programs targeting elementary and middle schoolers, teaching things like resilience, wellness, self-care and coping behaviors.
Psychologist Mary Alvord said she’s been seeing “younger and younger kids” in her practice.
“At ages 6, 7 and 8, I’m now seeing kids with depression,” said Alvord, of Rockville, Maryland. “It used to be suicide attempts were more in high school. Now, I’m seeing more completed suicides in middle school and even upper elementary school.”
The CDC data illustrate “a steady consistent increase,” that “deserves our focus and our attention,” said CDC statistician Sally Curtin. “It’s linear and has gone up every single year since 2010.”
The CDC also monitors suicide attempts and self-inflicted injuries, based on data from emergency rooms. The latest CDC report published Jan. 31 found that from 2001 to 2016 such visits for those 10 and older increased 42%, with “substantial increases occurring in younger age groups.”
( function() { var func = function() { var iframe = document.getElementById('wpcom-iframe-79b79243a21c2044b3616bfb38ab82d9') if ( iframe ) { iframe.onload = function() { iframe.contentWindow.postMessage( { 'msg_type': 'poll_size', 'frame_id': 'wpcom-iframe-79b79243a21c2044b3616bfb38ab82d9' }, "https:\/\/embeds.kff.org" ); } } // Autosize iframe var funcSizeResponse = function( e ) { var origin = document.createElement( 'a' ); origin.href = e.origin; // Verify message origin if ( 'embeds.kff.org' !== origin.host ) return; // Verify message is in a format we expect if ( 'object' !== typeof e.data || undefined === e.data.msg_type ) return; switch ( e.data.msg_type ) { case 'poll_size:response': var iframe = document.getElementById( e.data._request.frame_id ); if ( iframe && '' === iframe.width ) iframe.width = '100%'; if ( iframe && '' === iframe.height ) iframe.height = parseInt( e.data.height ); return; default: return; } } if ( 'function' === typeof window.addEventListener ) { window.addEventListener( 'message', funcSizeResponse, false ); } else if ( 'function' === typeof window.attachEvent ) { window.attachEvent( 'onmessage', funcSizeResponse ); } } if (document.readyState === 'complete') { func.apply(); /* compat for infinite scroll */ } else if ( document.addEventListener ) { document.addEventListener( 'DOMContentLoaded', func, false ); } else if ( document.attachEvent ) { document.attachEvent( 'onreadystatechange', func ); } } )();
During the most recent study period, from January 2017 to December 2018, such visits increased more than 25%. For girls ages 10 to 14, data from 2009 to 2015 reflects almost a 20% increase in emergency visits for self-inflicted injury.
Youth today are much more familiar with death, said Jonathan Singer, board president of the nonprofit American Association of Suicidology, citing more than 20 years of mass shootings at schools among reasons.
“Death has become public,” he said. “With the internet and social media, when somebody dies, it’s all over your newsfeed. Hundreds of millions knew within minutes that Kobe Bryant had died. Death is much more a part of their generation.”
Among those aiming to reverse the trend is the National Association of State Boards of Education, based in Alexandria, Virginia, which examined the 2017-18 school year and determined that 25 states and the District of Columbia required or encouraged school districts to develop suicide prevention policies.
The parents of Alec and Caleb are moving past blame into action. Lee and Paige Murray (on couch) are working with the Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital and other agencies to better coordinate local suicide prevention.(Lauren Casto for KHN)
According to the organization’s policy review, author Megan Blanco said only three of 10 states with the highest youth suicide rates (ages 10-24) had a suicide prevention policy. The youth suicide rate for Nevada — where Alec and Caleb lived ― is 14.4 deaths per 100,000, which is higher than the national average of 10.6 deaths per 100,000. Nevada was not among the 25 states with a prevention policy, she said.
Alvord, the psychologist, has conducted programs to promote suicide awareness as a joint effort of National PTA and the American Psychological Association. She also helped APA develop online advice for parents to talk to teens about suicide.
Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, a pediatrician and an adolescent medicine specialist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, co-founded the Center for Parent and Teen Communication.
“It’s never a mistake to ask a person about their emotions or whether [someone should] be worried about them,” he said.
“People think depression is always seen as sadness,” Ginsburg said. “While sadness is a very important clue, adolescent depression can present with irritability, rage or anger, instead of just sadness. Physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, belly pain, dizziness, loss of weight ― these are all things that can present as having problems with mood or depression. Parents may miss the signals.”
The day after his death, Caleb’s parents sought answers on his phone and computer, asking their son Matthew, then 16, to search Caleb’s history back to middle school for possible clues. They found one thing: a search for “suicide” the day before Caleb hanged himself.
Nadine Kaslow, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, said parents need to realize that kids communicate differently today and any thought of banning social media or phones isn’t realistic or wise.
“Parents often get mad at kids because they’re texting or Instagramming or Snapchatting,” she said. “I worry when kids are not doing those things. If they stop doing that, they’re not having fun.”
Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and author of the book “iGen,” has a darker view of the effects of media consumption and technology, based upon her research. Studies published in several journals in recent years — including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Psychiatric Quarterly and Sleep Medicine — found detrimental connections between the omnipresent smartphone, social media, sleep disruption and depression.
A memorial to Caleb Stenvold, who took his life at age 14, holds a place of honor in his home.(Lauren Casto for KHN)
The mother of three (including a 13-year-old) believes technology should not be in a child’s room overnight, and she doesn’t believe anyone 10 to 14 “absolutely needs a smartphone.”
Twenge said it’s difficult to determine a reason other than technology for the suicide spike in recent years.
“Phones and smartphones check all the boxes of possible causes,” she said. “It’s something that’s affected a very large number of people and affected their everyday lives. It’s hard to think of anything else that fits that criteria.”
Perhaps the most significant analysis supporting Twenge’s worries appeared this month in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The evidence from cross-sectional, longitudinal and empirical studies “implicates smartphone and social media use in the increase in mental distress, self-injurious behaviour and suicidality among youth.” The review also found that social media “can affect adolescents’ self-view and interpersonal relationships through social comparison and negative interactions, including cyberbullying; moreover, social media content often involves normalization and even promotion of self-harm and suicidality among youth.”
A Pew Research Center report on cyberbullying released in 2018 found 56% of 13- to 14-year-olds had experienced cyberbullying; more than one-third said they had been the victim of offensive name-calling or false rumors.
Their parents said neither Alec nor Caleb were bullied. But many others are.
“We don’t know if bullying is the cause, or if kids who are depressed make better targets for a bully,” said Justin Patchin, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center.
Henry Kautz, a professor of computer science at the University of Rochester in New York, sees a similar dynamic with technology.
“People have been quick to point to studies that show increases in screen time and increases in depression. But it’s really unclear which way the causation goes,” he said. “Are people who are bullied and isolated seeking refuge in more screen time or is it the other way around?”
Caleb’s parents created Forever14.org, a website dedicated to preventing youth suicide by promoting conversation and human connection. They have filed paperwork to create a nonprofit with the same mission.(Lauren Casto for KHN)
The parents of Alec and Caleb are moving past blame into action. The Murrays are working with the Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital and other agencies to better coordinate local suicide prevention. Caleb’s parents created Forever14.org, a website dedicated to promoting conversation and human connection in order to prevent teen suicide. They have filed paperwork to create a nonprofit with the same mission.
“Don’t think it’s too young to talk to your kids about if they might feel like hurting themselves. You might think you have time to tell them, but you can’t go back,” Caleb’s father, Storm Stenvold, said. “I don’t know what pain he was in for that time that he felt he needed to do this. He decided on this very quickly. He was rarely alone. He was home less than three hours by himself.”
Paige Murray agrees, which is why she and her husband, Lee, said they weren’t going to be silent about Alec’s suicide.
“Every family needs to have a conversation about suicide with their children —starting very young. Don’t just spring it on them when they’re 10,” she said. “It should be part of everyday conversation about loving yourself and making sure tomorrow is another day. Make sure it becomes a part of everyday knowledge.”
“This wasn’t a conversation that ever entered our house until June 8, but knowing what we know now, it should be. We were blindsided by it,” Lee Murray said. “It’s hindsight. We could have done better, but how would you know?”

( function() { var func = function() { var iframe = document.getElementById('wpcom-iframe-79b79243a21c2044b3616bfb38ab82d9') if ( iframe ) { iframe.onload = function() { iframe.contentWindow.postMessage( { 'msg_type': 'poll_size', 'frame_id': 'wpcom-iframe-79b79243a21c2044b3616bfb38ab82d9' }, "https:\/\/embeds.kff.org" ); } } // Autosize iframe var funcSizeResponse = function( e ) { var origin = document.createElement( 'a' ); origin.href = e.origin; // Verify message origin if ( 'embeds.kff.org' !== origin.host ) return; // Verify message is in a format we expect if ( 'object' !== typeof e.data || undefined === e.data.msg_type ) return; switch ( e.data.msg_type ) { case 'poll_size:response': var iframe = document.getElementById( e.data._request.frame_id ); if ( iframe && '' === iframe.width ) iframe.width = '100%'; if ( iframe && '' === iframe.height ) iframe.height = parseInt( e.data.height ); return; default: return; } } if ( 'function' === typeof window.addEventListener ) { window.addEventListener( 'message', funcSizeResponse, false ); } else if ( 'function' === typeof window.attachEvent ) { window.attachEvent( 'onmessage', funcSizeResponse ); } } if (document.readyState === 'complete') { func.apply(); /* compat for infinite scroll */ } else if ( document.addEventListener ) { document.addEventListener( 'DOMContentLoaded', func, false ); } else if ( document.attachEvent ) { document.attachEvent( 'onreadystatechange', func ); } } )();
Among those aiming to reverse the trend is the National Association of State Boards of Education, based in Alexandria, Virginia, which examined the 2017-18 school year and determined that 25 states and the District of Columbia required or encouraged school districts to develop suicide prevention policies.

in my last entry, i said that i would not type up another until i had confronted my mother.
well. over a year later, and here we are. my mother has been confronted, but not by me. i would like to attempt to do an overview of my life the past year.
a warning. i am in emotional states all the time. if my thoughts dwell on my family members that i miss or events that enrage me, i bring myself to tears within seconds and my head aches and i cannot focus much these days. my depression is at its height but by some fucking miracle i didn’t relapse. i didn’t. i also didn’t have the means as the box cutter disappeared.
i will try to remember the details. i found out recently that untreated mental illness literally erodes away your physical brain and memory. so. forgive me.
[aug 2017] my birthday passes by with a quiet birthday. we had taken my brother down to his school in hollister. my mom came with us and everybody was uncomfortable. my mother made a scene, asking my father if it was okay to eat the food that came with our air b&b. she was pathetic. i ignored her and shut her out this entire time. the brakes went out in my dad’s yukon. what would have been a fun trip is now spent fixing the yukon and sweating in the car. this trip marks the end of the close relationship i had with my brother for nearly all my life. we’re still close but i see him every three months for a few days at most. this wears on my soul and brings me to tears now. i miss him so god damn much, all the time. anyways. mom moves to atchison. toby goes back and forth each week despite his desire to live with my dad all the time. my mom doesn’t care, doesn’t get a job, can still to this day never pay for anything, such as gas or food for her own son, and constantly pawns my brother off on my father. my littlest brother is 13, now 14, and is still subject to all that.
[sept 2017] i move into the dorms pretty much by myself. i think my dad brought up my minifridge, but it was sophomore year and no big deal. no one else really said anything, no one else being my extended family. i expect their silence constantly and nothing else except for when it’s “important”. you know, christmas, birthdays, baby showers, all that sort of bullshit. anyways, i start classes and i actually make a ton of new friends in my biology and chemistry classes. amanda, maggie, dev, trent, carter, mackenzie, aaron, all the katies. through them? ameen, meg, brendan, kady. it’s really wonderful. i have a good community. classes are fine. i go home for toby’s homecoming. mom has become the master narcissistic manipulator that she is and is trying to warp everybody’s image of my father and me. she does so within the small, close-minded community we’re from. friends of my family, people i’ve known for years, people i haven’t had conversations with for years, block me on facebook, on all social media. it’s really awful. at homecoming, my mother carpools with us while spouting all that bullshit on facebook and actively shitalking my father. i know that homecoming is going to be fighting between my mother and father. we don’t even make the 10 minute drive to the school before they start in. they begin yelling. oh, i forgot to mention. i told my father about the men my mother had been sexting on facebook with the help of my sister. so my dad knows. he brought those men up. my mom laughs hysterically asks my dad how he knew. he doesn’t respond. my mom asks why my father isn’t stepping up and giving her gas and food money like he should. i ask her why she doesn’t get a job if she’s able to walk 12 miles a day like her facebook posts say she can? my mom scoffs and says, “so you’ve got her on your side too, huh? telling her lies?” this pisses me off as i’m 19 years old at this point, fully capable of thinking, and tell my mom this. i tell her she doesn’t have her family anymore. she tells me thanks and walks away. my mother asks my father to walk with her later on. i tell my sister and cousins the deep gossip. they send their condolences. it’s petty thinking back on it.
[oct 2017] nothing much happens. i get along fine with my roommate. classes are fine. mom is spouting shit and i just get angrier and angrier. she walks over everybody. all my mom’s family isn’t talking to her. my sister and i bond over the salt.
[nov 2017] pretty much the same. my cousin has the first grandbaby. she’s cute and i love her and her name is kyah. my cousin salts with me. no one lets my mom know of the baby’s birth until a facebook post a few hours later. pisses my mom off. haha. i think it was around november that a leak sprung up in my room and i was moved. the girl i moved in with is named erin. she’s incredibly rad and understands me pretty deeply. both equal parts oversharing and similar past experiences and we became very important to each other very quickly. i’m also still angry and emotionally distraught all the time and erin helped. she genuinely makes me laugh and was a pillar of support. she knew intricate details better than marissa does. she is easier to talk to than marissa. isn’t that wild?
[dec 2017] garryck comes for christmas. i am still working. i do good in classes. i have a crush on my friend carter in my chemistry class but nothing happened with that and i’m at the point where i just appreciate the aesthetic and his personality yknow. anyways. we have christmas with my mom’s family but don’t invite my mom. shitty, yeah? who the fuck cares. i am able to tell erin about all this in full detail. i have never been so fully understood by another person outside of my family. it’s really incredible.
[jan 2018] nothing really happens. normal month, normal me, whomst this. nah, i’m still angry all the fucking time. every little thing sets me off. it all stems from my mother and what she is still actively doing, besmirching my father and i. it’s awful awful awful shit.
[feb 2018] something of importance happens. those first few months, i was always able to rely on my mom’s side of the family to vent and shit and i still am, but not with my sister. my sister got pregnant in december and february was when the prospect of having a child really got to her. and she didn’t want to do it alone. she didn’t want to do it without my mom. so my sister really, really pressured me into making up with my mom, to sweep everything away, to rewire my brain and change my chemical makeup and forget all my god fucking awful memories and somehow muster up the strength to speak to my mother without wanting to deck her. it doesn’t work. the kid won’t bring us together. spoiler: he doesn’t. my sister stops talking to me. she is easily manipulated. she beings believing the shit my mom says about my dad, her stepfather. it’s all shit.
i think this went down in february. my memory is foggy. erin meets my friends and there’s awkwardness. erin occasionally makes me uncomfortable. she made them uncomfortable. i have to talk to her all the time. i have to compose myself all the time and be around her all the time and. and i dont think i could take it. i’m a really awful person, you know? i have been this past year. anger and malice has been eating away at me for so long and i am so tired. so... i switched rooms without telling erin why. she asked and asked and pestered and insulted until i finally laid it out. she apologized. she said she would change. she said she didn’t realize. she said she was sorry and sorry and sorry. i left her on read for six months. i ignored her in between classes and at meals. i became a real fucking asshole. i cut off one of my closest friends.
[march 2018] the shit with toby goes down. i won’t bother logging it here. buchanan county courthouse already has. but it puts a strain on things. mom wants to move back to kansas kansas. like the shawnee mission area. dad does too. dad wants to leave rushville and missouri. they begin arguing about schools. mom wants wellsville, a hick town of hick people and hick classes and hick education, the worst. my dad wants a normal functioning school where toby can be a normal non-hick. so does literally everyone, even my mom’s friends. my dad gets laid off. he is struggling to make ends meet.
[april 2018] my dad begins talk to me about rehoming my dogs and our cats. the thought really fucking tears at my heart. he wants to leave rushville so bad and go back to his friends and his life before my mom, before everything went to shit for him. i could not imagine being my father and living in that house all completely by myself. the house that held my family of 5 people, two dogs, three cats, birds, fish, loud, furniture everywhere, home everywhere, music everywhere. his family. everywhere. and that house without my brothers and me and mom became a husk. a ghost of his life when it was bad but it was full and it was full of life and it was full of his children and their voices and their music and god do i fucking miss it so fucking much i miss that so fucking much and i can’t spend my nights alone without thinking about things used to be and i miss everything so much i miss everyone so much. i was so afraid of my father killing himself after being laid off and facing massive amounts of debt that he called his father, whom he hadn’t spoken to in nineteen years, for help, only to be met with silence. he didn’t though. he had three children who loved him so fucking much and relied on him for everything and everything was him and he was everything and is everything to me and there’s no one on this godforsaken planet that i love more than my father. while untreated, my life would end with his. i think he knew that. i was so afraid of my mother killing herself because that would be completely and totally my fault but how could i prevent that? i need to turn off the smiths right now.
i need to breathe. i need to ground myself. i need to remember it is going to be okay. april was okay. nothing happened major.
[may 2018] nothing happens here. school ends. dad has been hanging out with his friends, one of them being amy and her family. oh, my mom through all of this has been disagreeing to settlements and therefore heavily delaying the actual divorce and has been doing that since sept 2017. my parents didn’t get officially divorced until aug 2018. that’s how much of a cunt she is. my dad’s two greatest friends are amy and marilee. they’re really really really wonderful women who help my dad and help me and family and i don’t know them that well but they’d do anything for my brothers and me. they’re true friends, good kind souls that fill this world. amy is also going through a divorce. my dad and her bond over that. but they don’t see each other. they don’t date, despite my mom’s best efforts to convince the world they’ve been having a 12 year long affair and amy’s youngest is actually my dad’s. oh well, haha. my mom’s a dumb petty bitch. anyways. we go to amy’s mom’s lakehouse and have a really good time swimming in the water. garryck comes up from school for a few weeks and brings his friends and it’s all a really wonderful time and we spend weekends out there and amy’s mom nancy is a wonderful woman and everything is great.
[june 2018] summer is still great. i work all the time. i move into an apartment in saint joseph with my friends kady and ashleigh. everything is good. we split it. jyro moves with me. everything is really great and nice. the summer is nice. i don’t hear much above my mom. living on my own, it was like. yknow. The Milestone. The last one that separated me from my adolescence. i see my dad about every two weeks on the weekends i don’t work. it is a good routine and it really really messes with me if i don’t see them at least every two weeks. i can see the damage to my mental state. it gets the worst right before i go and visit them, when it’s been the longest. i just love sitting and chatting with my papa. i feel like it makes me whole, complete, recharged and energized. i love him so much. the summer is bliss. the summer is great. i pay rent and become and adult and bills and everything is good.
[july 2018] my mother moves to wellsville and moves in with a guy down there, so the dumb bitch loses her alimony lmaooo. however this means there is now an hour and something odd drive between my mother and father’s house, where toby must be transported. my mother can’t even afford her phone bill, so there’s no way she can afford the gas for this. of course, my father transports him, because he’s working odd jobs constantly and stressed about not being able to find a job and i get that second hand anxiety because i want him to be okay and i want to live an easy life without stress and he can’t do that with my leeching mother. breathes. anyways. she moves toby down there without telling him that doesn’t go well and that pisses me off royally and everything is rough for a few moments. i don’t ever talk to my mom. i block her on facebook. i think my sister’s baby shower is this month. i spend the days prior with my aunts and cousins helping set up. i was also sick and pretty useless. anyways, we salt about my mom because she’s not communicated about shit and everyone is upset with her and not talking to her so i’m just drinking the tea at this point in time. baby shower is fine, sister is exasperated with lack of a relationship with my mom, the thing goes fine, whatever. nothing really else happens in july. i bought my dad a hat for his birthday.
[august 2018] wooooooooooo birthday month. also a really awful month. my brother went back to school. my dad rehomed both my dogs to new homes, but at least they’re together. that was really really really really really rough and i miss those pups so fucking much and i am so angry at the situation at everything at everything at everything i miss my dogs. i had to rehome my ferrets. i did that by myself. a rescue in liberty took them. i miss those fuckers so much. but they’re in a better place. my dad also rehomed our two other cats. i did not get to say goodbye. i don’t know where they went and i can’t visit them like i can the dogs. it really really gets to me sometimes, thinking i was so important in their lives and now i’m gone. i got a card from work for my birthday. marissa and ashleigh took me out to dinner. some cards and a bunch of facebook posts. school starts back up. i see my old college friends that i genuinely miss. i see erin in one of my classes and i realize how much i miss her, but she looks at me with so much resentment. i fucked up so bad. but i missed her and i needed. well i wanted our friendship back. it wouldn’t be the same, no, but god do i need all the help i can get traversing my fucked up life. so i sent her this long ass message, explaining myself, my mistakes, why i fucked up, why i was so immature, why i was a total asshole for no reason. she took me back and i am so happy. our friendship is so good again. i love having her back and i think about the good things in my life like that a lot. toby started at wellsville, much to everyone’s chagrin. my sister has her baby. his name is bentley. he is very cute and i love him. my sister does not talk to me or my dad as much. i think she is slowly cutting us away. i try not to think about it.
[sept 2018] my dad did get a new job and apartment actually in august but i’ve already typed this and ya bitch lazy. hence all the rehoming. he gets health insurance october first. i am so ready to go to the doctor again and get my thyroid and my depression treated. i don’t remember a lot of things from my childhood anymore and it is scaring me and i think my depression is causing it. though i am not a doctor. this boy sam is talking to me and goes to my uni but we haven’t met in person, though i think he likes me. i am not sure.
life is okay right now. i am sitting in my dad’s apartment waiting for him to get off work at 2am. i have been watching rick and morty and shitty teenage romcoms all day. i am really exhausted right now but i’m waiting for him. i hope things get better for me. they’re okay right now. i am going to see the national october 7th. i saw modest mouse back in may. that was really fantastic. i don’t have to retake chemistry 120. i have my cat. my monstera has new growth. halloween is soon. there are a lot of good things right now. i just heard matt’s “hey baby” in nobody else will be there. what else do i need right now?
hopefully i’m treated soon and will keep up with this better

7 Celebs Who Are Owning the Silver Fox Look
Some celebrities choose to dye their precious locks to hide signs of aging. Hey, we all do it, right? Some celebs, though, choose to embrace the salt-and-pepper and even go full-on gray. Plenty of our favorite famous faces wear wigs to try out the silver look -- or stonewash, if you’re fancy like that -- like Kylie Jenner and Lady Gaga, to name a few. Others have let their natural graying happen, and we have to admit that we like what we see. Let’s not forget when Patrick Dempsey transitioned from his dark brown mane to having a sexy silver streak at the front of his head -- need I say more? Cara Delevingne has been switching from blonde to silver to brown again for years, and we are finally on board with this trend.
Read on to see some of our favorite A-listers who are totally killing the silver fox game and one who, though he’s known for his silver head of hair, actually hates the phrase “silver fox.”
1. Pierce Brosnan Salt and pepper brands should pay Brosnan for all this free advertising. The 65-year-old has officially embraced his gray, and I would not be mad if he wanted to reprise his role as James Bond looking like this. James Bond: The Later Years, perhaps?
Dress Pierce Brosnan like a Texan (like the kind he plays on AMC's ‘The Son’) and it becomes clear in an instant that the man can imbue any wardrobe with his innate Pierce Brosnan-ness. It's unfair, really. His tips for how to grow a mane of dignified facial hair and don a cowboy hat at the link in bio. (📷 @wearetherhoads)

2. George Clooney I don’t think anyone quite appreciated how silver the 57-year-old actor was until he showed up to the Royal Wedding in full-on silver fox mode. Are he and Amal a vision or what?

3. Helen Mirren Dame Mirren is usually photographed a bit more blonde than gray, and she keeps her naturally icy hair fresh by adding highlights here and there to compliment her staple face-framing haircuts. Other than that one time she showed up to the 2013 BAFTA Awards with a pink bob, that is.
Our September issue, starring #HelenMirren, is the long-awaited, utterly necessary celebration of growing into your own skin — wrinkles and all. No one is suggesting giving up retinol. But changing the way we think about aging starts with changing the way we talk about aging. With that in mind, and starting with this issue, we are making a resolution to stop using the term “anti-aging.” Tap the #linkinbio for more on this initiative, and why we're encouraging others to follow suit. 📸:@scotttrindle 📝:@heymichellelee 👗:@hanneshetta 💁🏼:@lukehersheson 💄:@ctilburymakeup

4. Jamie Lee Curtis The 59-year-old Halloween actress has been rocking her natural color since the 2000s, going fully gray in 2004. “It helps if you can be courageous and cut your hair off like I did,” she told Marie Claire in 2007. “It's much harder to transition with longer hair, since then you're stuck with two inches of gray roots.”
Going out with a bang, albeit a very short one! So fun to be back for one of the last episodes! It has been a pleasure to be the New Girl’s mama, Joan. End of the run and my girl is all grown up! @newgirlonfox @seanjameshair

5. Taylor Kinney Although only 36 years old, the Chicago P.D. star and Lady Gaga’s former beau has rocked the salt-and-pepper look for years. Appropriate, since Mother Monster had silver hair at one point while she and Kinney were dating.
Check out my friends foundation http://www.bickellfoundation.org Lots of love from Chicago. @abickell @bbickell

6. John Slattery Slattery isn’t shy to admit that he’s had gray hair since college, just like his father, who apparently walked down the aisle with a full head of gray at age 23. The Mad Men actor isn’t fond of dying his hair, but doesn’t want to be called a “silver fox” either.
“I hate ‘silver fox,’” he once told Vanity Fair. “I absolutely hate it. It just sounds so slimy and embarrassing.”

7. Anderson Cooper The journalist and television personality went salt-and-pepper in his 30s, and although it’s become a signature look for him, he’s said in the past that he doesn’t love the look as much as the rest of the world does.
“I don’t really like my gray hair. I wish I still had brown hair. It’s not my thing,” Cooper said on Live! With Kelly in 2016. “If I could, I would probably color my hair, but I couldn’t imagine sitting in a salon with tin foil in my hair reading old issues of Rosie for hours. At this point, it’s too late -- the cow has left the barn.”
Happy birthday to the man who wears many hats: journalist, television personality, author, and V.F.'s June 2006 cover star @AndersonCooper. Photograph by Annie Leibovitz.

Mabelle Alma Peabody born 13 December 1891

“15 years old”
“Property of Mabelle Peabody from her mother Xmas 1906”

2 days per page
Headings on page: Ther. Tues. Jan. 1, 1907 Wea.
Harold is 4 years old today.
Warm tho’ cold wind. Wet & sloshy.
School began. Nothing new. Resolved: to keep a diary; to read a chap. every night (now at Mar’8); to do more studying outside of school; to do better every way. Papa still at Windsor, Vt., — has been baling hay there nearly a month. Mama had the misfortune to lose the inside of her fountain pen. Came home to dinner. [dinner is mid-day meal, so she would have walked home from her school, wherever it was.]
Wednesday 2
Somewhat warmer – icy walking. Mama bought a Waterman’s pen to-day. Don’t quite like it. I think she’ll exchange it. Received letters from Mabel W. & Alice Holton. Came home to dinner yesterday and to-day. Mama got thrown from the sleigh — the runner caught while crossing the track. No one hurt. No damage done.
Ther. Thurs. Jan. 3, 1907 Wea.
colder — and icy.
Pa came home to-day, almost 9 o’clock without supper. Has finished pressing hay down the river. [Windsor is down-river from Lebanon.] Pa came near running onto a live wire on his way home with the team tonight from Hartland. It’s 11 am. Good night. As a New Year’s present I got a — — from Aunt Ella P.
Friday

Went to school as usual. Had a German [———] Went down to Ernest and Ann’s tonight with Eva [—]. Had a fun time. Played dominos. Eed beat. Pa’s pressing hard at WRJ [White River Junction]. The electric lights were put in just before Xmas. Used about $1.00 of electric so far.
Saturday Jan 5
about same.
Washed my hair. Ma went uptown late in the p.m. No mail or news. Have done no studying for Mon.’s lessons. Now at 1 pm some children are sliding down up here — seem to enjoy it very much — I have not been this winter.
Sunday 6
Looks like spring. rain.
None of us went to church today or S.S. [It would have been Christian Science.] In fact, went nowhere at all. Stayed to home directly and studied. Intended to start half a dozen letters. — — —.
Mon. Jan. 7

Wed. Jan. 9
cold. Windy! and cold! Came home to dinner tho’ it was awfully cold and windy. Pa and the men (Arthur Holt & Geo. Stearn), off to Plainfield. Have been working on the hay press here out back of the barn. Got a letter from J.H[K?]D. and Aunt [Anna]. B--- --. [Written sideways in the margin: (CHS:07) This may mean “J.K.D. is in the class of 1907 at C. high school.) Am going to bed now 9-30. Isn’t that early for me?
Thurs. Jan. 10
40° colder this am than 80 --- [a lot more weather hard to read.]
Went to school of course and had dinner at the café! No news except it’s too cold to work, walk, or write in a diary in my room even. Took a test in German don’t expect to get passing on it. Bed – 9:30.
Fri. Jan.11
Stayed at café to dinner. Had a good time with Winnie Halley who boards there also. Think I should go home right away. a little warmer. cold enough. expected to go out sliding to-night but didn’t.
