Knight of heart if that is okay
Ok, so, I was kinda hesitant to answer this one because I have a troll in my fansession who is a Knight of Heart, but I put this off long enough so, here's the disclaimer, this might be totally stupid and inaccurate. I'll try my best but at least part of this might be biased because Tongty Honbee is my favorite of the fantrolls I already have designed, so. Here we go, I guess.
I usually start on classes, so, what are the distinct personality traits of Knights?
The main thing we know about knights is that they tend to hide things, especially about their own aspect. The knight class is an aspect manipulation class, along with witches, implying they have a unique take on their aspect. Mages and seers may understand the aspect, but knights can tame it, like a medieval knight with a steed they shall ride into battle. The knight would have a solid understanding of their aspect that would bring new ideas to light. They're not as creative as maids, but they like hearing new ideas; not that they always listen to said ideas, and especially not about their own aspect, but while a witch would understand their aspect's ability to change from the inside, a knight might distance themselves in order to get a new perspective. This distancing also makes them hard to get along with for most people; they put on a facade that lets them keep their distance, or feel like they're keeping that distance, anyways. This attempt to be someone farther away from their aspect than they are doesn't necessarily mean they succeed; in fact, Karkat himself is "too friendly" compared to other trolls, as much as he may pretend otherwise (and friendship is a blood aspect thing, as I've previously mentioned).
The knight's attempts at distance are tiring even to the knights themselves, but they do give the knights the ability to provide Hot Takes on their aspect. Honestly, I'm trying really hard not to describe knights like they're seals but I might as well indulge the metaphor of a feral wet cat, that looks like one thing (smol and fluffy) while knowing themselves to be entirely different (friendly reminder that seals are carnivorous!). I should clarify that different doesn't mean "opposite"; Seals can be both at the same time, and, theoretically, so can knights. Why shouldn't you have a great sense for irony while still being present for your friends when they need you? Why not have a temper and yet be a caring person? Why not have a coolkid persona and not have it replace your personality?
The problem with that is mainly that the knights are holding themselves back. They think, usually, that this outsider perspective on their own lives, that the distance they put between themselves and their aspect, is entirely necessary, or entirely black and white; either you're as far away as possible and doing great, or you're too close; that the distance is the only way for them to keep their power and understanding of their aspect. This is obviously not true, but knights aren't great at self-reflection, as we've noticed. So, for the knights out there, consider this a wake up call; why are you holding yourself back from your aspect? Do you really have to, or is it yourself holding you back?
... Speaking of aspect, actually, we should probably get to it. I'm probably gonna be saying a lot of stuff I already said in previous posts about heart players, but maybe something unexpected would happen and a new puzzle piece will lock into place, and I'll have something new to say...
First things first, I'll say heart is the aspect of the self, or even the soul. It's an aspect regarding identity; having a sense of self, self exploration, knowing and learning more about who you are as a person. It's also the aspect of emotions and, to a sense, truth (oh hey, would you look at that, something I didn't say before!)
The emotional aspect of the heart comes with being able to feel your emotions to the fullest and embracing them, as well as being very emotionally intelligent. A heart player can sense and empathize with their friends, and are usually very willing to listen if you need to talk, and may even help with putting names to feelings, or offering comfort if needed. They have a very wide range of emotions, which can get overwhelming at times, but they embrace it completely; they probably consider themselves sensitive people, or at least highly emotional.
The truth element of the aspect is actually a mirror to its opposite aspect, the mind. While mind speaks of objective truths and undoubtable knowledge, the heart is about subjective truth; how you feel about something, and how reality doesn't cancel out your feeling about the situation. It can be very overwhelming (and, as an emotional mind player, I can at least offer comfort in the knowledge that your truth is very valid and at least you're not stopping yourself from crying because it "doesn't make sense". We all make choices in life and mine apparently include emotional ineptitude and a penchant for tears). It's also about being true to who you are, and being unapologetically you. Loud and proud about your personal values and opinions.
Heart players are also very animated, which ties into both the previous points; they're very emotional and aren't afraid to put said emotions on full display. You're happy, and bouncing all over the place, and grinning so wide and bright it's infectious and now everyone else around you is vaguely giddy with no idea why. You're sad and suddenly the world is wilted and lacking colors, and it's like the air is as thick as honey. People notice your emotions and catch them like they're in the air. They notice when you're missing because you express yourself with all that you are, and the world around you is more colorful for it.
This also makes heart players more impulsive, though, usually when their emotions override their logic. Even those of them who pride themselves for being incredibly logical can sometimes let the world in too deep and interfere and get hurt, the moment something becomes personal.
The last part of the heart aspect is the self. The most important part; both within the aspect, and to the players. The sense of self of a heart player is their compass, and they're always looking for the right direction. Heart players like to explore, see and experience, both the world around them and who they are. They can get very intense when learning about something new, because every new passion is like a badge they can wear to say "this is part of who I am now". To them, every thought and opinion that crosses your mind is part of what makes you you, and should never be discounted. They wear every positive adjective you assign them with pride, and acknowledge the others by addressing them carefully. They strive towards self-achievement and understanding and betterment, which can look strange from an outsider's perspective but for them it's normal, and they have a difficult time understanding anyone who doesn't want to be the best they can be.
That lack of understanding of others is also just a general part of being a heart player; most people may see you as intense or awkward at first, because different people have different priorities in life, which, well, of course, you may say, but you still don't really get it, even if you do respect the fact that maybe, for some people, their relationship with themselves is at the core of all their values. If you know there's someone you're gonna meet, you may prepare some questions; simple "getting to know you" icebreakers, supposedly, but the further you delve the more obscure or specific your questioning becomes, which can throw people off; not everyone can offhandedly answer questions like your favorite breed of cat or what they'd most like to have a collection of if they could. To a heart player, these are questions you ask yourself and carefully collect the answer to into the marvelous patchwork of your personality, an opinion you hold that, combined with all your other ideals, makes you your own, unique person.
As such, they're also very decisive people, who form an opinion and hold onto it like it's their defining characteristic; because every characteristic is defining to a heart player, and all those traits can only make up one person who cares so deeply about things like the name of a childhood plush or how many teaspoons of sugar you put in their tea, and that knowledge can make heart players very detail-oriented, in the way where they want to know everything about you that you'd be willing to tell them- it also makes them great at understanding interpersonal relationships between any two people; because this person is a cat person, while this other person actually does have a favorite dog breed, so they're going to have disagreements in a work scenario but be good friends if they aren't (I'm very much extrapolating; I'm no heart player, I could be completely wrong and hyper dog fans can entirely get along with cat people, who am I to know?)
(yes, that last paragraph is shamelessly stolen from my last analysis. I'm tired and it's still entirely correct so I'm just reusing this. Also helps make sure I'm not too close to this because the aspect analysis is half stolen from my previous one!)
Well, all that out of the way, we can combine the class and aspect to understand better the Knight of Heart.
A Knight of Heart hides their heart; be it their true personality, or their feelings for others, in order to understand emotions in other people. They're explorative and try for open-mindedness but constantly miss the mark when it comes to social interaction. A knight of heart might be trying so hard to distance themselves from their aspect that they become obsessed with who they are and how they're not what they "should" be, for example.
They might market themselves as patient while inside their emotions are a whirlwind, and only break down willingly to a few people. I imagine they're the type to be proud of any adjective given to them, so much so that their black-and-white thinking implies to them that that means they cannot be anything that may contradict said adjective (see; the seal metaphor).
A Knight of Heart may have similar characteristics to a prince of the same aspect, if only because knights hide who they are, which is a major part of this aspect. However, unlike a prince, who destroys themselves unwittingly, a knight would just hide. They know who they are, or who they should be, incredibly well; they just have a reason to believe that they shouldn't show that to the world.
(Bonus content under the cut? More likely than you think!)
Decided to show off my single art piece for my knight of heart fantroll and also give a tiny ramble about zem!
Meet Tongty Honbee, a selectively mute purpleblood who only has the courage to talk through ventriloquism, which, coincidentally, is also a thing ze found thanks to zir best friend, the indigo scriptwriter who was originally my trollsona (who has also evolved beyond that and now needs a new name and design... why am I doing this to myself).
Tongty is a bee themed troll, zir sign is the honeybee waggle dance pattern and zir clothes are all striped (even the clown makeup is hexagons). Ze talks with a lot of made up sign language and even more body language, much like how bees communicate via a dance... Ze also has a pale crush on zir best friend and is content to not ruin a perfectly good friendship for a chance at a moirail... which is how I ended up classifying zem as a Knight of Heart :3
(Extra design notes, because I won't talk about it anywhere else: zir horns are based on bee antennae. Ze's signing the sign for "happy" in the drawing :D the name Tongty originated with the phrase "tongue tied"... I have more but they're really small things, like how I had to tweak zir colors 8 times because the stripes and fluffy collar for the jacket keep reminding me of Mina Ashido from MHA and I don't even watch that show)

KITTEN

oneshot. wc. 795.
a/n: another jungwon oneshot bcs I'm simping alot for this boy. sumimasen 🗿 btw it doesn't mean anything in the end. It's just the outfit made yn really interesting for him so if u think otherwise then that's ur fault 😭😂
Cosplay.
'I’ve loved cosplay my entire life, it has been my passion since I was a child and I would never give up on it as long as I live..'
'And.. I’ve never shown anyone, no.. No one on the face of this earth has ever seen me cosplaying and I’d rather die if any of my friends knew about it.. That’s why I’ve always made sure if I ever wore one, no one and by that I mean no one from my school would ever find me in it. But.. but..' Your vision grew blurry as tears started to well up in your eyes..
'But!'
You pressed your lips shut, a lame attempt trying to cover yourself with your arms from this boy standing a bit farther from you, his eyes fixated on you.
Why? Why of all people, why him? Why is he here!? The class president!?
Your entire life, you were always having an inevitable competition with Jungwon. That guy who you never manage to have a good relationship with no matter how you try. Everyone knew him as the kind and caring student but he never acted the same to you, making you feel as if his angelic persona was fake. But you still tried, however every single time you tried to strike up a conversation, he would just ignore you even going to the extent of calling you an attention-seeker. Since then, you start to dislike him alot and thus begin your never-ending battle with Yang Jungwon. The entire school had always known about you both, often creating a petty deal of who’s going to take the first place every single time.
“You-..” He opened his mouth, tilting his head as he seems to have a hard time taking in what he’s seeing right now; you are wearing a maid outfit with a cat tail hanging on your back matching with the one on your head, and that lace chokers with bells around your neck.
“Yang Jungwon! Where are you!” you snapped your head to the direction from where the voice came from.
Fuck.
You knew who that voice belonged to. Yang Jungwon’s sister, the chatterbox of the school who always has a time to make fun of people no matter who they are. Being the friendly, elegant and poise girl you are, you were free from her so-called ‘words of death’ and you both even became friends. Just a simple friend, that is. But now you’re doomed to death once she sees you.
“Well, well. What do we got here?" a low chuckle escaped from his mouth as he looked at you up and down. From the distance, you can hear his sister approaching. Why did this even happen in the first place? You’re in a festival, a festival for people who cosplay! Why are they even both here in the first place!? It’s impossible that they would even like cosplay when they were the first ones who expressed hatred and disgust over it!
Looking around desperately trying to think of what to do, where to escape, and especially with this freaking class president in front of you. Sensing your anxiety, he walks closer to you making you walk backwards.
“Don’t stress yourself too much.” he softly says, which was a complete difference from that shit-eating grin on his face right now.
“Don’t you ever tell anyone about this!” You blurted out without much thought, well, desperate situations calls for desperate measures.
Another low chuckle escaped from his mouth, making him look down to his feet in a split moment.
“I think we both clearly know you’re not in the place to bargain..” he leans in, his face just a few inches away from yours, “Kitten.”
“Okay, fuck.” You gritted, “What’s your deal? Last time I checked you don’t even wanna say hello to me.”
“Glad you got it fast, just what I had expected from you.” he smiled. “And you’re right, it doesn’t really bother me.. To even say hello to you.” His words gradually became whisper in the end, making you unable to hear it. You tilted your head in confusion but you have no time for this as his sister was now approaching, her voice signals you that she’s gonna appear anytime now.
“Until I saw you in this..” his fingers stroke the material of your dress.
“Fuck, just what do you want Yang Jungwon!?” You whisper-yelled, and in a split moment he puts both his hands on both your sides, caging you between his body.
His lips slowly curving into a smirk as his cat-like eyes lazily gaze at you, and his fingers lifted your chin up. “Did you lose your owner?.."
"Huh??"
"—Cuz I was wondering if I can have this kitten all for myself?”
“What!?”
“You hear me,” his face looks amused by your outburst, “I want you, kitten.”

To Write A Good Villain
TW: loss of control, hallucinogenics, dr*gs, sc*rs, venom, bl*od, death, defeat, s*x, god, volcanoes, pr*dtors, m*rder, j*alousy, smoking, ab*se, cheating, sl*very, oppression, servitude, vampires, destruction.
Technically, I'm here on Tumblr as a writer. So. It's time I contributed my itty bitty bit.
Many things make a good story. Some claim it is world-building, some think it the cast of protagonists, some the vivid descriptions. All of those elements, however, will seem lacklustre, if your story does not have a good villain. What use is an MC with glorious superpowers or magic, if there is nothing to oppose them? Can there be any victory without a great evil?
In real life? Perhaps. In any fictional world? No. The readers tune in for awesome conflict, so we writers must provide, and enjoy ourselves while doing so.
So what does make a great villain?
Before we explore that, let us review the types of villains. Most important to remember is that a villain need not be human. In literature, there can be many types of discord:
- Person Vs Self: Often used as a compelling subplot, this kind of conflict is valid when a person needs to do something that is opposed to their inner self, something they find morally, emotionally or intellectually repulsive. Eg; A scholar forced to indulge in activities that are unscientific, like smoking when they know it is bad for their health. A pacifist who is forced into a war situation and must commit murder to save their own or their family's lives. A person seeking enlightenment struggles with jealousy when their guru finds a new favourite. (IMPORTANT: Feeling conflicted due to one's morals is acceptable. Hating oneself due to a mental disorder is not. Please do not use mental illness as a plot point.)
- Person Vs Person: Often used as a primary plot point in standalone stories and movies, this kind of conflict is valid when a person bears a personal grudge or hatred toward another. Eg; A wrestler hating someone who defeated them in the ring through sabotage. A child-hating the murderer that orphaned them and their sibling. A person hating their lover who manipulated, gas-lit or cheated on them. (IMPORTANT: Ensure that abuse and abusers are not romanticized, that the healing journey of the character does not lead to them forgiving their abuser. Forgiveness is not a prerequisite for closure. Please do not encourage abuser-abused relationships.)
- Person Vs Society: Often used as a primary plot point in dystopian stories and movies, this kind of conflict is valid when a person aims to fight against a law or a government that systematically oppresses them. Eg; A womon fighting against the law which considers them as lower-class citizens. A PoC fighting against slave laws. A member of the working class rebelling against the bourgeoisie. (IMPORTANT: If you are not a minority, do not presume you are qualified to tell their story. Our stories belong to us alone, and taking away from us the privilege of sharing our trauma when we feel comfortable enough to do so is the worst kind of representation. Please remember if you occupy a position of power, you have no right to speak on our behalf. Already we are often silenced, do not participate in that further if you claim to be an ally.)
- Person Vs Machine: Often used as a primary plot point in science fiction stories and movies, this kind of conflict is valid when any man-made object gains enough intelligence to be considered sentient and becomes a threat to humanity. Eg; A machine that acts as a maid desiring to be free of the bonds of its servitude. An AI which does not have empathy and value for human life. A robot that attempts to destroy mankind. (IMPORTANT: These conflicts are often intricate, and can be spun anyway. Perhaps a human tries to teach a robot to love, and the result is embarrassing in a comedic way. But do not try to equate people on the asexual and aromantic spectrums, people with mental illness or people with severe trauma to these AI. They are extremely discriminated against. Please, do not contribute to the stigma.)
- Person Vs Nature: Often used as a compelling subplot, this kind of conflict is valid when a person is pitted against fauna and flora in a vulnerable state. Eg; A captive who has escaped their bonds only to come upon a harsh landscape. A person with severe allergies visits a place that is opposed to their disposition. A person with a grudge against a famous wild animal who bit off their leg. (IMPORTANT: In many such stories, a trend is that a character comes across a hostile tribal group. These tribes are portrayed only the negative attributes of certain PoC cultures. Doing so is blatantly racist and highly offensive. Please refrain from representing us in such appalling ways.)
- Person Vs Fate/Supernatural: Often used as a primary plot point in fantasy and YA stories and movies, this kind of conflict is valid when a person is threatened or working against a force that is outside nature. Eg; A person coming across a magical artefact belonging to a god, and the devil's henchmen are after it, but it has bonded to them. A lower-level employee working in a tampon factory accidentally discovering their boss is a deadly vampire. A person falling in love, only to discover their partner is heir to a clan of selkies, and their younger sibling plans on overthrowing them. (IMPORTANT: Oftentimes, the villains are given physical and cultural attributes exclusive to PoC and their culture, like the antagonist having dreadlocks or enjoying food that lies outside white cuisine. Please realise that is racist.)
How to create a proper villain:
1. Motive.
Arguably the most important factor in a villain is motive. Their end goal must be reasonable(depends on their moral compass), achievable(depends on their means), and must cause moral conflict in the protagonist.
Eg; Due to childhood trauma, a villain feels weak and unsafe in their own skin. Adopting a terrifying persona, they seek to control everyone around them, and by extension, the world, through a potent hallucinogen. Considered worthless until they design a new identity, the villain is only considered a threat when they overthrow a monarchy/gain obscene amounts of money/create a giant machine. The MC knows that the villain is wrong in their actions, but understands that their henchmen are drugged, and must choose a different course of action than brute force to defeat them.
2. Power/Skill
Expanding on the earlier point of a goal being achievable, a villain must have the capabilities to obtain the prize they desire. If they perform actions outside their means, the entire premise becomes boring and unrealistic. Unless the villain is playing pretend for a future plot twist, humble the antagonist before they get out of hand.
Eg; A machine cannot destroy the world if they do not have an intricate base code if they are not linked to machines around the world. An animal cannot be famous unless its existence is questionable unless it is more mythical than real unless it possesses some quality (a missing tooth, a scar across their eye) that the others of its breed do not have. Kindness cannot be a source of a moral dilemma if it is not shown in many actions of the protagonist.
3. Appearance.
Contrary to popular belief, the way a villain looks contributes greatly to their story. If the appearance of an antagonist does not match their other attributes, the villain may fall flat and feel one-dimensional.
Eg; If a person comes from humbler beginnings, them wearing designer clothes is not feasible. A wealthier person should at least maintain the appearance of being well-groomed, but a few things out of place, such as a tie clip, messy eyeliner, or stubble are acceptable, perhaps due to lack of respect for themselves, or mania from unfulfilled desires. If a plant is secretly venomous, let insects keep away from it. If a werewolf is known to violently transition, let them have a feral look in their eye, larger canines and stronger jawbones.
4. Presence
Outside of appearance, the overall vibe of the villain is of the utmost importance. Their aesthetic instils fear, inspires awe, which is one of the primary things that cause audiences to secretly root for them. Their smooth delivery of scathing, savage lines makes us fall in love with them. Having a stellar, scary presence amplifies whatever the villain does tenfold.
Eg; If a villain wears a daring dress, different from the style of their era, it will make them seem much more impressive. Fresh after a murder, if they have blood splattered on their face, it will make the ghastliness of their actions more resounding. If they're haunting little children, having grotesque features instead of sharp ones will terrify the kids more, and the readers.
5. Backstory
Why did the villain become a villain in the first place? This is perhaps the most important question when it comes to antagonists. Not only do backstories help us understand the villain's motives and reasons better, but readers may also root for them if they glimpse a part of them reflected in the villain, making the tale more painful to read.
Eg; If a bully has been abused at home, it explains their actions. If a villain was in a situation where their body was not theirs, their actions may be born out of a desire for control.
Things to avoid:
1. Do not make them a caricature. Avoid toxic and dull stereotypes such as "catty ex-girlfriend", "sex-crazed womon", "evil old pr*dator" etc. Not only are these caricatures cartoonish and overused, but they also make a villain hollow and lifeless. Villains are humans too, give them quirks, bad habits and things they enjoy, beliefs of their own. (Eg; They enjoy watching cat videos, smoke or bite their nails, enjoy mixing drinks for fun, and think God is a hoax.)
2. Avoid coding them as PoC or LGBTQ+. If you have a diverse cast of various races, ethnicities, sexualities and genders, then it is completely alright to write another such character as the villain. However, if your only minority character is the villain, that is highly problematic.
3. A backstory does not equate to sympathy. If the villain's actions are extremely reprehensible, including and not limited to; r*pe, g*nocide, ab*se or s*rial murder, please do not try to redeem them. Understanding someone's motives is wildly different from making the audiences sympathize with them. Do not romanticize their flaws.
4. Lastly, humble them. A villain will always entertain the audiences if they suffer a bit too. Instead of constant angst and pain, add lighter moments, moments where they stumble, trip, are tired or bored. This would make their eventual death/defeat burn even more, and the audience will definitely mourn the loss of a wonderful antagonist.
Like a volcano, a true villain leaves ashes in their wake, but their fire forces the protagonists to solidify into stone. Let their actions echo into the age.

Can I please get the DRV3 girls with a fem S/O who's the ultimate cat maid and takes there talent very serious.
Kaede Akamatsu
Oh god you were so cute!
A part of her wishes that you would stop with the cat puns though
But she knows that it’s practically apart of who you are
She might get a bit jealous seeing you serve other people
But you just have to remind her that it’s a part of your act and that you are the one she cares about the most
(If you pester her about it she’ll try on a pair of cat ears too)
(There’s no way she’s wearing the maid dress though no matter how much you beg!!)
She volunteers to play the piano at the cafe you work it, it’s a win win for both of you
She gets to spend more time with you and earn tips while you get more customers drawn in and get to fluster your girlfriend during working hours
Himiko Yumeno
You were absolutely perfect to her
Always happy to carry her around or get her food
She didn’t even have to lift a finger
Tbh sometimes she thought you were actually part cat, especially since you got the moving ears and tail
Expect lots and lots of headpats
Though she hates that you have to wake up early just about every morning to get ready
(She didn’t know you wore so much makeup.. And that hair could take that long)
If you give her a makeup she will blush lightly
(You make her look like a supermodel!)
Tenko Chabashira
Her face turns soo red seeing you for the first time
So.. so cute!!!!
Tenko is going to be super protective of you, making sure no degenerate taints her innocent S/O
(You might have to explain to her that she can not threaten people when you go to work)
She doesn’t understand how you feel comfortable with the constant attention
(Especially from the degenerates)
You have to promise her that you would defend yourself if any male customer tries to touch you during your work
Expects lots of training sessions
She just wants to make sure you know how to protect yourself!
(And that’s how you became a cute cat maid that knows martial arts)
Angie Yonaga
You were so caring and giving!
Always volunteering to help her out~
You’d be a perfect priestess for Atua
But you won’t sway from your cat maid path
She pouts but eventually spots pestering you about it
(Though she does invite you to some praying sessions)
However I hope you have a lot of spare dresses handy, since Angie loves to tackle you in hugs but often forgets about the paints covering her
She’ll apologize but constantly forgets to make sure her clothes are clean before hugging you
(Thankfully you have Kirumi to help you get the stains out)
Miu Iruma
You know the first thing she says seeing you is something inappropriate
(“Hey! Is that one of those tails~?” or something similar)
But god seeing you constantly wear the maid dress always makes her mind go to the gutters
You look so fucking hot in it and if you bend down there was just a hint of cleavage
However since you need to be super friendly and chatty for your job, be expected to constantly reassure Miu
Not that she would ever admit but she does feel insecure sometimes
She’s going to make you tons of inventions to help out with your job
(If you call her Master or anything similar she will melt)
(Also it would make her really happy if you wore a cat collar with a small tag that reads ‘Belongs to Miu Iruma’)
Maki Harukawa
She kinda just stares at you the first time
Just… what the hell were you wearing?
And why are you acting so.. Friendly??
Honestly she thinks your outfit is kinda stupid but it makes you happy so she doesn’t mind
What she does mind is some of the looks you get for it, she glares them back letting them know that you are taken
Honestly it’ll take a while for her to realize her feelings for you and she’s a bit unsure of what to do
She wakes up early by habit and doesn’t mind helping you get ready
She’s also happy to test any new recipes or drink ideas you have
(Don’t worry she’ll give you an honest opinion about it)
Tsumugi Shirogane
She practically let’s out a fangirl scream seeing you
She’s such a huge fan!!
She’s been following you ever since you entered the maid industry
Get ready to cosplay basically every maid in anime ever
(Cough Nekopara cosplay cough)
She always has new ideas of how you can change your outfit or the personas you put on for guests
Will probably stay up multiple nights to make you a new outfit
Or at least attempt to if you don’t stop her
(Here’s a hint, kisses would distract her from sewing)
Kirumi Tojo
My my your talent seems to be similar to hers but yet you act so different
She was calm and collected and you were bubbly and chatty
It’ll take her a while but eventually she’ll let you help her with some chores
It becomes a morning ritual to have her help doing your hair, and then you make breakfast for the both of you
(It was hard to get Kirumi used to that, you have to start simple with like a cup of tea or something small)
Both of you could be rather busy during the day, but it’s worth it
During nights the two of you simply cover in bed enjoying this quiet times together
Getting either of you to take a day off is almost impossible
(The only thing that would distract either of you from work is if something happened to one of you)
If you ask, she will wear cat ears with her regular outfit
(You squeal so loudly saying how the two of you match and she can’t help but smile)

Persona 5- or how I learned to love high school

Aight, I’m back buttfuckers, long time no see. 2017 has been one hell of a year for me gaming wise, and that’s one of the reasons I haven’t written shit in like six months. I bet my massive amount of readers have missed me, and the bots of Tumblr even more so. The reason I’m making a post after all this time is not only because I’m procrastrinating, but aso because I wanna highlight one of the many games I’ve had a fucking crush on this year, and that game is Persona 5.
Let’s start by ranting about how much high school sucks. You got so little freedom, studying sucks ass, girls are ignoring you and your throbbing, rejected dick and don’t even get me started on parents, those bastards always making sure you’re alive, keeping you fed and putting up with a miserable piece of shit like yourself. On the surface that sounds like a recipe for middle age suicide, but deep within that shit lies the Metaverse: the world fo the collective subconsciousness. And it’s here where I’ll start talking about the game itself.
Persona 5 takes place on the streets of Tokyo, behind a school bench and in the collective subconsciousness Carl Jung rambled about. You take the role as a teenager on parole for a crime he didn’t commit. You live above a café. You’ve got a bed, some junk and a cellphone with a strange app on it, called the Metanav. Despite numerous attempts on deleting the malware, you give up and get to know another teen, join up with him, a talking cat and a hot fucking gal to make a P.E. teacher confess to his crimes. How though? Well, simple: You break into his mind palace and crush his spirit, or “take his heart”, as the game puts it. The taking of hearts is done through typical JRPG turn-based combat. Did I say typical? Fuck that! Check below to see the amazing fucking battle screen.

You see? Now compare that to a Final Fantasy game of your choice and try to tell me that FF is worth two shits, I dare you.
And the cascade of pure awesomeness doesn’t stop there! Because school is actually fun! You get to date girls, seduce them, show off your knowledge and try to get into the teachers’ panties. That’s what kept me going through this game. I wanted to score with the teacher, and when I “failed”... I realized that I fucking loved this game. The battles, the characters, the dialogue, the voice acting (even though I played through the second half of the game with japanese voices, the english voice acting is pure quality if you ask me)... The aesthetics of the game is like Quentin Tarantino went... I dont know, gothic? The cell in which you fuse personas (see next paragraph) is dark and brutal, and when you fuse personas you literally fucking execute them with a guillotine, chainsaws and electric chairs. And then you go back to the real world and visit a maid café to increase your charm and kindness (improving your social stats is a huge part of the game, and not just in order to get laid).
About the namesake: Personas are “demons” you can recruit throughout the game to aid you in battle. You equip different personas to use different elemental attacks, give you resistances and stuff. It’s a bit like Pokémon, if Pokémon had the ability to tell you to fuck off instead of just running away like a faggot. The personas are based on folklore, mythology and religion. You can equip everything from Satan, christian archangels, hindu deities, samurai to fucking Thor. When you’ve recruited different personas, you can fuse them and get a new, sometimes more powerful persona. This is one of the most addictive features of the game since the personas can inherit skills, resistances and what not you’ll be fusing the shit out of personas to create the ultimate motherfucker.
So, I’m aware this was a weirdy structured text... But fuck you. I love this game and the only thing that sucks about it is mementos and Yusuke. I’ll be posting more shit, hopefully posts with better structure than this one, about games I’ve fucking loved this year (like Sundered, Steamworld dig 2 etc.,) and games I’ve fucking hated (Bravely Default...). Meanwhile, glad to be back and all that. Sorry for the lack of structure and the long departure.

The Phantom Thieves Came and Stole My Heart!
It’s been a while since I wrote a review here on Tumblr... I kinda lost interest in Tumblr for a good while, but I’m back because I want to talk about Persona 5. I have just finished my second run of the game and I feel like a review of this game would be too much to tweet about on Twitter so I thought it’s best to write here. Anyways lets start the review.
So I did a series of blogs reviewing all the Persona games from 1-4 in preparation for Persona 5. The game came out in September 2016 and we had to wait through a series of delays for the localized release of the game. Were the delays worth the wait for the game? I say yes because the game has exceeded all my expectations as I patiently waited for the game. The game was finally released April 4th 2017 world wide and everyone was excited, including me since I have been avoiding spoilers for half a year. I will discuss about those spoilers later in this review so this is your first warning here.
So Persona 5 starts off in a Casino where the protagonist and his friends are pulling a heist. Here you would be confused and ask the following questions: What’s going on? Why am I a thief? Why are the Police after me? Why did that guy turn into a monster? and What’s in the briefcase I’m carrying? All those questions will be answered later in the game. The opening scene ends with your character being caught by the police, interrogated after taking an overdose of truth serum and beaten up by the cops. A prosecutor named Sae Niijima enters the scene and asks you what happened from the very beginning. The whole story of the game from that point on is a flashback.
The flashback starts in April 20XX (yes no exact year but there are some theories when it takes place) with your character arriving in Shibuya searching for Sojiro Sakura who will be his caretaker for a year. Why is your character in Shibuya? You learn that your character was walking down the street in his hometown one night and finds a drunk guy yelling at a woman. Your character tries to play hero and stops the drunk but then he gets sued by the drunk. The result from that confrontation puts your character in probation from his hometown. So you start your new life living in the attic of a cafe that Sojiro works at. You get introduced to Shujin academy and start attending school there. On your first day of school you meet a blonde punk named Ryuji Sakamoto and they wind up at a castle instead of the school. This castle happens to be ruled by a king who has the appearance of the schools volleyball coach who you learn later is a major asshole. While trapped in the castle, your character awakens the power to summon personas summoning Arsene. They escape the castle with the help of a talking cat mascot named Morgana who also uses a persona named Zorro. After they escaped the castle they return to the streets of Shibuya confronted by police thinking they are 2 kids skipping school. They learn they missed half a day of school and your character wants to avoid as much trouble as possible since he is already on probation. Through the days in school you learn that the volleyball coach, Suguru Kamoshida, is an abusive coach who bruises his students with his spikes and sexually harasses the female students. His deeds have gone so far that a girl who he sexually harassed attempted suicide on school grounds. This all results in Ann Takamaki, a girl who happens to be your characters class, join you and Ryuji. Morgana finds our heroes in cat form and tells them that if they steal the treasure that lies in that castle, called a Palace, then Kamoshida will have a change of heart. Ann joins the group after awakening her persona Carmen, Ryuji also awakens his persona, Captain Kidd, before Ann. After the group succeeds in stealing the treasure, Kamoshida arrives school one day confessing all the crimes he did to everyone in a school assembly. The result of that success is the birth of the groups being known as the Phantom Thieves.
What I just wrote was all the first dungeon of the game. I’m not going in full detail about all the other chapters except for the end. I mainly wanted to write that just to show the buildup they made to show how much thought they put into creating corrupt characters in the game. The story goes on with the Phantom Thieves changing the heart of Ichiryusai Madarame, an artist who appears to be completely innocent at first, but actually plagiarizes the work of his pupils. The team recruit one of Madarames pupils, Yusuke Kitagawa after he learned about his masters corrupt nature in art. Yusuke awakens his persona Goemon and they changed the heart of Madarame. The next target was set by Shujins Student Council President, Makoto Niijima, since she’s been suspicious of the protagonist and his friends. Makoto wants them to change the heart of a mobster, after searching for information they learn about Junya Kaneshiro who runs a drug trafficking business with high school students involved. Makoto awakens her persona Johana and joins the Phantom Thieves in order to fight for what justice truly means to her. As the story goes on a student in the main characters class, Yuki Mishima, starts a fan site for the Phantom Thieves after they took down Kamoshida (There’s a legit fan site of this fan site online, it’s phansite.net) . After the Phantom Thieves changed the heart of a person, their fame increases. Due to their fame they received after changing Kaneshiro’s heart, a hacktivist group named MedJed threatens the Phantom Thieves to stop or else they’ll “cleanse” Tokyo. Instead of changing the heart of someone in that group of hacktivists, they change the heart of a girl who isolated herself from society for 2 whole years after her mother died. This girl was Futaba Sakura, adopted daughter under the care of Sojiro Sakura. After they changed her heart, she hacks into MedJed and saves the Phantom Thieves. She then joins the group after awaking her persona Necronomicon. Their next target was a request from... my favorite character in the game... my god I love her... Haru Okumura daughter to Kunizaku Okumura who is the CEO of Okumura foods who runs the equivalent to Burger King in the world of Persona, Big Bang Burger. Her father is a corrupt man who cares for personal gain, Haru requests the Phantom Thieves to change his heart since he put her into marrying an asshole who treats Haru like dirt than the softhearted person that she is. The wedding was mainly so her father can have a political connection in the company. Haru Awakens her persona, Milady and change her fathers heart... until you see his shadow get shot by a mysterious figure after the Phantom Thieves leave the scene. This results in Haru’s father confessing what he did, but then dying live on TV like a public execution. This results in the Phantom Thieves massive drop in fame and they get help from a detective who’s been onto the Phantom Thieves throughout the game, Goro Akechi. He tells them that they should change the heart of Makotos sister, Sae Niijima, the same Sae from the very beginning of the game, to help prove the Phantom Thieves innocent. Goro helps the team with his persona Robin Hood and they venture through what Sae sees a courthouse as a Casino. That’s right, we’re heading back to where the game started! The end results in what you saw from the very opening of the game bringing you back to the interrogation room with Sae.
That’s enough with the story, until I get to the heavy spoiler part. The game has wonderful presentation for it’s anime like story and characters. I love this group so much compared to other groups in the Persona series. Ryuji is an idiot who you’d like to butt heads with while he tries to do something right with his own actions. Ann isn’t bright but she’s caring and wants to learn how to be a strong. Yusuke is interested in finding many inspirations for his next art pieces wherever he goes, but is very bad with managing his money. Makoto is the most organized member of the group, but is tired of following the path others give her and wants to decide her life for herself. Futaba is characterized like a major gamer girl who is a mischievous hacker and is like the little sister character to the protagonist. Haru is an innocent rich girl who loves to garden and dreams of making her own coffee while trying to handle business with Okumura Foods after her father’s passing. Morgana wants to learn the truth behind his origins and teaches the main character how to be a Phantom Thief like a kickass sidekick. Goro is a dedicated detective who is willing to do anything it takes to solving a case.
The gameplay is fantastic, exploring Tokyo with the fast travel button is incredible and easy to use! Exploring town is similar to Persona 3 and 4 where you run around town talking to people and shopping at various stores. Social Links are now Confidants, but still work like Social Links. Confidants are incredibly useful in this game! Each Confidant gives you an ability to give the player a better gameplay experience in the game! Hanging out with your party members improves their combat performance. Outside your party members, the following characters have incredible improvements to gameplay. Yuki Mishima helps you get more experience in battle for both those fighting and on the sidelines. The main characters teacher, Sadayo Kawakami, does her job as a maid to do tasks that waste your characters time in the Cafe. Sojiro Sakura teaches you how to make coffee and curry which heals your party’s SP. The doctor who works at a clinic nearby the cafe, Tae Takemi, sells more healing items and accessories in the clinic. The ex-Yakuza who works at a model gun shop, Munehisa Iwai, helps you customize guns. The politician who wants to make up for his mistakes in the Diet Building, Toranosuke Yoshida, helps the character be better in negotiating with the enemy. A fortune teller who’s part of a cult, Chihaya Mifune, gives fortune telling sessions that tells you what abilities your party members will get in the future. A reporter who likes to drink, Ichiko Ohya, helps write articles about the Phantom Thieves and decreases the threat levels when the player is spotted by the enemy. A kid who’s raised to win everything in life, Shinya Oda, helps improves the main characters skills using a gun from playing a gun video game. A professional Shogi player, Hifumi Togo, gives the main character new strategies to use in battle. The last confidant outside of the party members are the twin Velvet Room attendants Caroline and Justine. Just like Margaret from Persona 4, they want you to create personas with certain skills. After completing each task, they’ll give you a new service to use in the Velvet Room.
Dungeon crawling in the game is incredible! It’s like I’m playing an Anime version of Sly Cooper without the insane stunts Sly does. You sneak around the dungeon and do sneak attacks on the enemy to engage in battle. If you get spotted then the person who owns the dungeon will become aware of you. If you fill the meter to 100%, you’ll be kicked out of the dungeon. Now to talk about what is the best combat system in any game I have played in my life! The combat is simplified by simple button presses, not going through menus selecting a physical attack or a spell. The only menu you go through is for using items, and the spells a persona has. When you knock down all the enemies with either a critical hit or their weakness, youll put them into an interrogation stage. This phase is reminiscent to classic Shin Megami Tensei and Persona 1 and 2 games. You make a deal with the enemy on letting them give you an item, money or become the main characters next persona to use. If it fails the enemy can comeback and attack. Or if you want the battle to be done with, just press the all-out attack button to let everyone in the party attack the fallen enemy. Another nod to Persona 1 in this game is that the characters use guns again! Now they wield physical weapons and guns. Bullets are limited though and you don’t find ammo in dungeons. They reload when you leave the dungeon and return another day.
The music is phenomenal! I never felt like dancing to a song in a game so bad when I play it! Shoji Meguro has done an incredible job implementing jazzy songs into a game about a band of thieves. The battle theme is incredible, I love the guitar riff in the boss theme, the song that plays at night when you return to the cafe is so relaxing. There are so many great songs in the game that I’m pleased to have a CD of the soundtrack from preordering the Take Your Heart Collectors Edition! Seriously, look up the following songs that I love so much: “Last Surprise”, “Life Will Change”, “Blooming Villain”, “Beneath the Mask”, and “Whims of Fate.”
Ok from here on I’ll be discussing spoilers of the last 2 dungeons of the game, you have been warned.
So after the flashback ends, you learn that the traitor of the group was Goro. He planned the Phantom Thieves pull a heist on a certain date and bring cops to that Casino. It turns out he works for a corrupt politician named Masayoshi Shido who happens to be the same guy who sued the main character in his hometown. Shido has been using Goro’s powers to kill people in the Metaverse, the world where people’s Palaces are held, in order to improve his image while he runs for Prime Minister of Japan. Goro was also hired to kill the protagonist after capturing him in the Casino. The Phantom Thieves manage to pull a stunt that makes the main character fake his own death. Futaba hacked into Goro’s phone and triggered him into the Metaverse killing a fake protagonist while the real one sits quietly in the real world with a smirk on his face. After the protagonist returns to the cafe, they all target to change Shidos heart. Shido has been behind many events in the game. Not only did Goro kill people for the election, he also killed Futaba’s mother and hired government officials to read a fabricated suicide note telling Futaba how much her mom hated her and was always in the way of her research of cognitive psience. Shido ordered her killed so he can take her research and use it to his advantage for his campaign. Shido also planned on using the Phantom Thieves fame against themselves by letting Goro kill Haru’s father after they took his Palace’s treasure. While the team explores Shido’s dungeon, they encounter Goro and fight him. Turns out Goro uses another persona, Loki, who brings people into chaos. After the battle, Goro is killed by Shido’s vision of Goro who is a mindless puppet used for killing people. Goro’s backstory turns out that he was abandoned by his parents and Shido was his father, Shido used his son as his own personal assassin for his own political gain. After the thieves change his heart, Shido confesses all of his crimes during his victory in the election. However, his team wishes to defend him by running the government the way he envisions it. After the Phantom Thieves made their comeback, since the news reported about the leader committing suicide through Goro’s attempt on killing the protagonist, the reception from society on the fan site isn’t as big as they expect and Shido isn’t being put on trail from his crimes. The final solution to this issue is to steal the heart of the pubic, which is located at the base of a Palace that’s created by the public as a whole, Mementos. Mementos is like Tartarus from Persona 3 meets the Abandoned Factory/Bomb Shelter from Persona 2. You explore the area and fight enemies from previous dungeons while going deeper and deeper into the abandoned subway tunnels. At the very base of Mementos is a structure known as a Holy Grail that gains power from people in society who believes it is their true meaning of life. I love what they did here with Mementos where it’s the game straight up saying we are prisoners of society. The characters you changed the hearts of through the game are like the ex-cons of society. You learn that the figure behind that Holy Grail is a god who wishes to send the world to ruin by letting humans not think about their paths in life. The biggest twist out of it all was that Igor, the master of the Velvet Room, was that corrupt god the whole time and the attendants, Caroline and Justine, are 2 halves of one attendant named Lavenza. Morgana learns that he’s a Velvet Room attendant as well but was created from the last pieces of hope from humanity before that god took over. The last dungeon is the Phantom Thieves fighting Angels and other demons as they climb their way through a world where reality and Mementos has merged. At the very end they fight that Holy Grail one last time revealing it’s true form, a god of control known as Yaldabaoth. They go through one intense fight against the god where he uses abilities from other bosses against the party and they impress the corrupt god with their power. At the end society learns that the Phantom Thieves are alive and fighting a god and their support for them increases the fan site meter to 100% letting the main character summon the biggest, baddest of all ultimate personas in the series! A being known as a demon lord who defies god to make a fitting end for the Phantom Thieves adventure, Satanael! Sataneal uses his skill, Sinful Shell, on the corrupt god and lands a headshot on him ending his reign on society.
Our heroes have saved society from god and are ready to have a Christmas party for the celebration... however... feels attacks... Sae tells the protagonist that they need his help in order to prove Shido guilty from what he has done since the Phantom Thieves are the only one who can prove what the Metaverse is. In order to do that, the main character has to turn himself in which will result him to Juvenile in Solitary Confinement. After receiving the news... to make the scene worse, the girl who you put your character in a relationship texts you for a Christmas Eve date. You spend time with her one last time before going to Juvie. The next day, everyone in the Phantom Thieves is crying and freaking out about how they saved the world and their leader is treated like a criminal in the end. Time flies while the main character is in prison and you see all the Confidants you max out with try to help prove your innocence. At the end, you get released early after Shido confesses that he sued your character for assault that he didn’t do. The protagonist returns home to his friends and they all celebrate the wonderful reunion. The next day is Valentines so you spend with whoever you dated. Then at the very end, once you let the main character say his goodbyes to everyone he met, he takes a trip with the Phantom Thieves on a van to solve issues that are requested on the fan sites forum posts in reality.
This ending, has made me cry more than the ending of Persona 2 Innocent Sin. I cried in a roundabout way from sadness to happiness... I don’t think I’ll ever experience that feeling again after that game. I have enjoyed everything the game brought to use Persona fans, along with cameos to other characters in the Persona series you see on TV like in Persona 3. The DLC costumes are a lot of fun to use since they change the battle theme if you get sick and tired of “Last Surprise,” or just want to goof around with some costumes. The Confidants are really useful if you do a Max Confidant run cause they make you feel insanely powerful at times! After playing this game, it pains me to say this, but it’s true... Persona 5 just took over Persona 2 Innocent Sin as my number 1 favorite Persona game in the series. The ending was entirely better than Innocent Sin’s ending since it was mostly on a sad note while Persona 5 was sadness to happiness. I highly recommend you get this game, even if you are or are not a Persona fan, it’s a wonderful JRPG experience. This game has stolen my heart, and I like it.
That was a lot to write about, I wanted to share how much I enjoyed Persona 5 to everyone as best I can. Now that the review is pretty much done, I bid you all...
GOD I LOVE HARU!

New Post has been published on http://www.classicfilmfreak.com/2018/01/25/my-name-is-julia-ross-1945-starring-nina-foch-and-dame-may-whitty/
My Name Is Julia Ross (1945) starring Nina Foch and Dame May Whitty
She went to sleep a secretary . . . and woke up a madman’s bride!
In the simple premise of My Name Is Julia Ross, a young secretary, having acquired a new job, awakens in a strange house and is told by her “husband” that she is someone else. Once the nondescript title is put aside and despite the clichés of the isolated sea coast mansion, the locked room, a secret passage, a black cat and the woman’s continued failures to escape, the film evolves into a tight little crime drama, film noir, mystery and, most obviously, a woman-in-distress exercise.
Nina Foch as the title character heads the cast and rightly so. Hardly recognizable as the Nina Foch of later years, she is totally convincing as the sometimes frightened, sometimes distraught Julia. It is one of her best roles, registering the requisite fear and, underneath, the tenacity to survive—no hysterics, just a contained inner terror that, to the viewer, is palatable. The part comes early in a long career usually limited to secondary parts and, later, appearances in TV series, as a game show panelist and director of plays.
She is admirably supported by two popular players of normally contrasting personas but here merged for a joint evil. Dame May Whitty, either an autocratic grandmother (Mrs. Miniver, 1944) or a harmless busybody (Gaslight, 1942) or the nice old lady who disappears (The Lady Vanishes,1938), is now a dastardly mother helping to conceal a son’s crime. She goes about her task with subtle cruelty.
And the son? None other than George Macready, that resident scar-faced villain (a real scar, sustained in a car accident), usually as an urbane, cultured-voiced criminal (best as such in Gilda, 1946). In Julia Ross he plays his part with nuanced shifts from the glazed stare of insanity—always hacking at things with a knife—to the debonair “husband” concerned only for Julia’s, er, Marion’s best interests.
The stars are well supported by a number of reliable Brits. Queenie Leonard as Alice the maid, the only person not in on the sinister plot against poor Julia, has frequently been cast as maids—in Forever and a Day (1943), The Lodger (1944), And Then There Were None (1945) and Les Misérables (1952).
Often seen as annoying, indifferent or uncaring characters, and so she is here, Anita Bolster has an angular, long-nosed face which recalls Margaret Hamilton’s. To see her is to remember her! Her films include Saboteur (1942), The Thin Man Goes Home (1945), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945) and The Two Mrs. Carrolls(1947).
Leonard Mudie, also in on the scheme, has played other unflattering roles: the cruel, dying Chief Judge Baron Jeffreys in Captain Blood (1935) and, another judge, the Grand Inquisitor deciding the fate of mankind in The Story of Mankind (1957). He spent the last ten years of his career in television, playing bit parts in numerous series, including four episodes of The Adventures of Superman (1953-56).
Making far more films than any of his supporting co-stars, and by far the least familiar, Olaf Hytten appeared in five of Universal’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries and in twenty films in 1939 alone. His brief roles are easily overlooked: a judicial clerk in The Black Swan (1942), a pickpocket victim in Casablanca (1942) and a king in Against All Flags (1952).
Julia Ross (Foch), unemployed, finds a job rather easily at one agency. She tells the secretary, Mrs. Sparkes (Bolster), that she has no living relatives or romantic attachments, neglecting to mention her boyfriend Dennis (Roland Varno). Mrs. Sparkes believes her ideal and calls the wealthy widow, Mrs. Hughes (Whitty).
Mrs. Hughes approves and insists that Julia move into her mansion that night. The employment agency is immediately closed, as its sole purpose was to find the one young girl who met the “requirements”—that is, as the unfolding plot will reveal, someone unlikely to be missed.
When Julia awakens the next morning, her purse and luggage are gone, she’s wearing a gown with the initials “MH” and the door is locked. Mrs. Hughes’ son Ralph (Macready) says she is his wife, Marion Hughes. Mother and son fake a show of benevolence toward Julia, consoling her after her “nervous breakdown.” They tell the maid Alice and the rest of the staff that Julia’s outrageous claims are caused by her condition.
Julia makes several attempts to escape, but is always thwarted. Once, when prevented from leaving by the gatekeeper (Charles McNaughton), she scribbles a note, attaches it to a rock and throws it between the pickets of the iron gate.
When three people arrive, including a Reverend Lewis (Hytten), Julia mistakenly assumes they have found her note, but when she tells them she’s being held prisoner, Mrs. Hughes deftly convinces the visitors of her daughter-in-law’s mental instability.
Later, Julia writes a letter to Dennis and leaves it where the Hughes are sure to find it. Sure enough, after the mother has substituted a blank sheet of paper, Julia writers another letter that the Hughes, unaware, allow her to mail on a visit to the local village, accompanied by the watchful Ralph.
When she inexplicably finds a black cat in her room, she figures there must be a secret passage—and finds one. While hiding inside the wall space, she witnesses a scene between Ralph and his mother. The son has killed his wife, the body presumably disposed of. Julia, now established as his wife, is to take her place and die of nature causes. Ralph, in a fit of psychotic rage, tears into a sofa cushion with his knife, but his mother stares him down.
Next, Julia uses a bottle of poison she finds to fake a suicide attempt. When a doctor Peters (Mudie) arrives, she tells him her plight, including about the letter, only to discover that he isn’t a doctor but in on the plot.
While Peters is dispatched to London to intercept the letter, a real doctor (Evan Thomas) arrives and says Julia must go to a hospital, but Mrs. Hughes persuades him to come back in the morning.
Fearing her time is running out, Julia throws her gown out her high-story window, onto the seaside rocks below and hides in the secret passage. While Ralph, assuming another suicide attempt, races down to the beach to make sure she’s dead, she beats him down, posing as her own dead body. By this time Dennis and the police have arrived, alerted when Peters is caught with the letter. Ralph raises a rock to finish off Julia, but Dennis stops him, and when Ralph flees through the surf, the police shoot him down.
Dennis proposes to Julia as they drive away.
The effectiveness of the atmospheric score is surprising. Not the unified work of one creative mind, though it gives that impression, the music is a collection of stock material by a number of composers. Among them are three who fled the Nazis in the 1930s: Ernst Toch, a classically trained Viennese composer; Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who did receive sole credit for And Then There Were None; and Friedrich Hollander, a Berlin cabaret song composer who received four Oscar nominations, one for “This Is the Moment” from The Lady in Ermine (1948).
The viewer might sense that My Name Is Julia Ross fails in at least one respect, that never for a moment does Julia doubt her identity—or maybe that’s a strength, since the villains must work all the harder to deceive her. And from the opposite perspective, those same viewers never, in any of their own private moments, doubt that this woman is Julia Ross.

Persona 5

A few things before we proceed: First off, since Atlus doesn’t allow me to record gameplay or take screencaps, I’ll have to pull screenshots off of Google search for illustrative purposes. Second, it’s impossible for me to gush about this game without spoiling a few things. I’ll keep major story spoilers contained to events surrounding the first major story dungeon. Nonetheless, consider this your spoiler warning.

I remember, as a wee lad (or as wee a lad as I can be while attending college), expressing an interest in Shin Megami Tensei, a game series that, at the time, had only recently started to pick up steam in the US. From that lone Facebook message, I discovered that a classmate in my Japanese class had a copy of Persona 3, and since he had beaten the game, decided to lend his copy to me.
I was hooked from the moment I put the disk into my PS2.
It was from there that I built up interest in the SMT series at large, with its themes of conflicting ideologies, the combination of magic and technology, and the deadly ramifications of their abuses. Through it all, however, the Persona subseries has always held a spot in my heart. That goes double for Persona 3, which combined dungeon crawling with life management, and Persona 4, which refined the gameplay of its predecessor to a fine point.
Persona 5 represents further refinement of the foundation laid by the previous titles in the series, including the ones before Persona 3. It doesn’t necessarily seek to re-invent the wheel, but with gameplay as slick as what it offers, combined with a story that resonates with me on a very deep level, it doesn’t even need to!
Even though the gameplay mechanics are the same, P5 differentiates itself from its forebearers right from the beginning.
Instead of beginning with your character moving into town, you open the game to the climax of what appears to be a daring heist on a swanky casino, with your character dressed like the world’s classiest burglar. This scene functions as a very basic tutorial for combat and stealth.
Unfortunately, the heist goes south very quickly: just as it seems you’re going to make a clean getaway, the police have you cornered! Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, you are arrested and taken into custody.
After what may be one of the most ethically dubious interrogations in games (with all the beatings and druggings that entails), you finally name your character as he is forced to sign a confession. Afterwards, a prosecutor arrives to get the full story behind your criminal activities and your bizarre MO, thus setting up the game’s framing device...

As it turns out, this isn’t your first hoedown at the rodeo: sometime in the spring, you got arrested with an assault charge after trying to help a young woman who was being forced upon by some drunk asshole. You never even put your hands on the jerk, but he is pissed off and influential, so...sucks to be you!
Thankfully, you got off with one year’s probation: so long as you keep out of trouble over the course of the coming school year, you’ll have your criminal record expunged and the stigma of being a juvenile delinquent won’t haunt you til your dying day.
Easier said than done...
On your way to your first day of school, thanks to a weird app that appeared on your phone, you and a classmate named Ryuji Sakamoto find yourselves very lost, stumbling upon a massive castle. An ill-advised excursion into the castle causes you to run afoul of its king, who bears a striking resemblence to Suguru Kamoshida, your school’s volleyball coach and someone with whom Ryuji has a major beef.
It seems as though you and Ryuji are about to meet with an untimely demise...
And that’s when a voice rings out inside your head, inciting you to rebellion!

Your Persona, Arsene, awakens. Ryuji awakens his own Persona, as well, and with the manifestations of your inner psyches, along with the help of a cat-like boy named Morgana, you make your escape.
Morgana explains that you had stumbled into the Metaverse, a parellel dimension formed from the human subconscious. That castle you were in? A “Palace”, a manifestation of one’s twisted, corrupt desires. The real world’s Kamoshida, as it turns out, is quite the asshole: he abuses his male students, pervs on his female students, lusts after your classmate Ann Takamaki somethign fierce, and has gotten away with it for ages due to his influence as a former Olympic gold medalist. When he crosses the line by attempting to rape Ann’s best friend, you, Ryuji, Ann, and Morgana make a plan to use the Metaverse and your newfound Persona powers to force Kamoshida to have a change of heart by stealing his “Treasure”, the core of his Palace’s distortions.
Thus, the stage is set for Persona 5, a story that speaks volumes to millennials, a generation disaffected by adults who abuse their power and make life more miserable for those who will later shape the world when they are gone.
A common thread between you and your accomplices, the “Phantom Thieves”, is this disaffection: Ryuji and Ann, as previously mentioned, have a personal quarrel with Kamoshida for his abuse/perversion, while the thief that joins you not long after, the artistic prodigy Yusuke Kitagawa, suffers under the thumb of a mentor who makes a fortune using plagiarized artwork.
The gameplay outside of dungeon crawling takes on the form of a life simulator: during the day, you will need to attend classes, as well as work part time for spending money, study for exams, watch movies, and maintain relationships with your fellow thieves, peers from school, and people around Tokyo. These relationships, called “Confidants”, are an evolution of the “Social Link” system from previous games. Your Confidants, similar to you, are victims of circumstances pushed upon them by those abusing their power: from the back alley doctor Tae Takemi, who is being harassed by the boss of the hospital she worked at; to Munehisa Iwai, an airsoft gun store owner whose dark past is catching up with him; and even your homeroom teacher, Sadayo Kawakami, who has little choice but to work as an in-call maid to make ends meet.
There is incentive to foster these relationships: the higher up you rank a Confidant, the more powerful the Personas of their corresponding arcana you can create. Unlike previous games, there are also benefits outside of Persona-fusing as you rank up each Confidant: Takemi will make more restorative medications and give you discounts, Iwai will customize weapons for you at his shop, and Kawakami will let you slack off during class every so often.
The main meat of the game, of course, is in dungeon crawling, which has been similarly refined in P5. Previous games used randomly generated dungeons, but the story dungeons in this game, referred to as “Palaces”, are hand-crafted instances that have a fixed structure throughout. To keep from being boring, each Palace has a unique theme, puzzles, and light platforming that helps to give them character, as well as resembling the locations you would expect thieves to pull off their capers, such as castles, museums, banks, and the aforementioned casino.
Stealth has been a minor part of previous Persona games, but in P5, it is an important part of Palace raiding: getting spotted by Shadows in a Palace will cause its security level to rise, and if it reaches 100%, you will be booted out automatically, thus wasting time. There is incentive beyond an advantage in battle to getting the drop on Shadows: a successful stealth attack can reduce security and make exploration easier in the long run.
The battle system takes elements from not only the two previous games, but Persona and SMT games before that. As with before, the key to victory lies in exploiting elemental weaknesses in your opponents, thus earning extra turns. Succeeding in knocking down every enemy will give you the opportunity to launch an All-Out Attack, inflicting massive damage on your foes.
However, that’s no longer the only thing that you can do when you’ve incapacitated your enemies: negotiations, a long-standing tradition in SMT and a feature of earlier Persona games, makes a return in P5. When talking to a Shadow, you can extort money and items from them, or convince them to join you as a brand spanking new Persona!
Once you clear a Palace, it no longer becomes accessible. If you need to do some grinding, however, you’re still in luck: there is another facet of the Multiverse, known as “Mementos”, that you can explore. Taking the form of randomly generated dungeons inside a sprawling maze of subway tunnels, Mementos serves as a means to gather new Personas and items, as well as the location from which you can carry out side-quests for EXP and advancement through Confidant plotlines.

As of this writing, I have not yet beat the game, but have made my way through a very large chunk of it: it is November in game-time, and I cannot say anything more about the story without spoiling anything. If you’re a fan of SMT, dungeon crawlers, and/or life sims; or if you’re a cranky millennial who is pissed off something fierce about the state of the world that you live in, then I very highly recommend Persona 5!
