got motivation to finish drawing my angsty firstborn
she’s the only living firstborn (we don’t talk abt the ones before 2022….)
Tumblr media
First time posting a non hpma oc on here. Small desc about her.
Her full real name is Cynthia Kya Vildoprh, translated into English transcript (full fantasy hehe).
her fake name is Cynthia Tavernall, where she poses as famer’s daughter, who knows more about the stars than a tomato!
she’s the eldest daughter of the Vildorph’s, the royal family of Skyra (a sky kingdom kinda), and holds ‘The Star’s Blessing’, which in folklore translates to: uh ou, they’re cursed and are gonna become rampant and crazy.
first picture (pinkish) is Cyn pre-story, she’s just 17/18 at home, acting like she isn’t lacking parental love bc her parents ignored her her whole life and had her brother to replace her in hope of having an heir who wasnt a ‘Blessed’ (when ppl r blessed it means theyre cursed).
second picture (greenish), is Cyn midway through. After…unfortunate events I will not disclose for ppl’s sanity, she has become queen rather than her brother: Edgar. Cynthia’s reign wasn’t smooth, a few months in she had a breakdown and impulsively ran away to an unplottable island in the middle of the night, where she finally met the voice in her head. But she also had time to hone the ‘Blessing’ and went a lil crazy and bloodthirsty, [Main characters don’t escape unscathed!]
also why is she a blessed? The royal bloodline of Skyra has a recessive gene thing which is said to be a gene but is literally just the Gods being like: they look promising! I dibs them! (I love petty gods). Cynthia happens to be a sort of ‘vessel’ for the eldest main god (there’s a whole hierarchy I’ll explain someday): Cloudia, goddess of the stars and skies and feather alike (sky goddess go brr), daughter of Solaris and Moyuni (sun and moon but not rlly). So obviously Cyn’s colors r gonna be sky and cloud related, she taps into the cloud part mainly.
this sotry takes place in Terrus, an alternate earth and in the continent of Alaria (I might’ve given on the map).
TLDR: Her name is Cynthia, princess of sky kingdom, parents faked her death when they discovered she was a vessel for sky goddess, she goes crazy at some point. She’s just a girl.

Wanted to get this out before I forgot lol
I had a really good year! But when I look at it like this it looks like I didn’t improve at all lol, if anything I regressed. Despite that I feel like I’m starting to develop an art style I really enjoy!
2022 ver under the cut!

Whumptober 2022 Day 23 : At the end of their rope
Forced to Kneel | Tied to a Table | “Hold them down.”
Kyle Kindall restrained after having been caught by the antagonists he'd tried to outrun.
He'd been kept like that for two hours (before he was rescued). During that time, he probably tried to alleviate the strain on his arms, or his legs.
Relieving stress on his arms and shoulders meant increasing pressure on his knees.

A brief moment of pride for me because I happened to predict a different look from this exact same collection for the MTV VMAs. I'll take the win! Taylor changed partway through the show, shedding her tartan Dior look for a party look that was easier for her to dance in but still retained a high shine award show appeal. While Taylor's look is obviously custom, the tapestry alien print and buckle detail are clear riffs from the Monse FW2024 runway. This was a fun and flirty mid-show change that reminded me of her strategy at the 2022 MTV EMAs. Though for that award show, there was a clearer throughline between both her looks as they were by the same designer - David Koma. Here, there isn't as obvious a connect between the two aesthetics. Although perhaps it's the notion of translating older notions of art into surreal, modern takes. With Dior, an ode to the secret messages Mary Queen of Scots embroidered in her clothes and with this Monse look, reimagining the antique tapestry to feature futuristic visions of alien invasion. Which feels very "Down Bad" in imagery.
For her second look of the evening, Taylor swapped out her singular pair of Lorraine Schwartz earrings (a go-to jeweler for her red carpet looks) and tapped into one of her style pillars: indie designers.
The mix of metals feels very Taylor - she often swaps between gold and silver and looks equally great in both, lucky her. Though I did most appreciate the silver tying in to the buckle detail on her Monse dress.
Of all her jewels, the piece that most caught my eye is Jade Ruzzo's ‘Tennessee’ ring. I spoke to the designer and she described the Tennessee as her “signature” collection, inspired by her late father who was a drummer. “I designed the Tennessee ring, the first piece from the collection, while in Tennessee,” she told me. “Tennessee has a heart and soul that I felt I could literally hear a beat to - it felt like it moved.” Jade translated the kinetic energy she felt in the city into a hand bezel ring with hanging gemstones that create a subtle movement - “as if [the stones] are dancing on each piece.” She added, “I wanted the movement to be subtle enough that it felt Iike soft steady music throughout the day.“ What an appropriate thing for Taylor, who calls Tennessee her home, to wear.

Before I go on vacation, I present my list of my top books for 2024.
COMICS:
Roaming by Jillian Tamaki & Mariko Tamaki
Bunt! by Ngozi Ukazu & Mad Rupert
Ukazu and Rupert are a powerhouse team, and as an art school adjunct, this already funny GN is even funnier (albeit in a way that necessitates a skull emoji in the educator groupchat)
Tiffany’s Griffon by Magnolia Porter Siddell & Maddi Gonzalez
Phobos and Deimos by J Dalton
Delicious in Dungeon by Ryoko Kui
It's a tough task to reach a satisfying conclusion to a series that was as strong as Dungeon, but I think Kui accomplished it!
Fool Night by Kasumi Yasuda
King in Limbo by Ai Tanaka
Over the last year I've been drawn towards comic series that work with a retro, fixed-width inking style, and King especially informed some recent experiments of mine.
PROSE:
Twins by Bari Wood & Jack Geasland
When I learned Wood was responsible for the book that became Dead Ringers, I knew I had to try it. This is the one that wins my "Oh, shit! Wow!! Okay!!!" award for the year (distinctions previously awarded to Cyteen and Manhunt).
The Bezzle by Cory Doctorow
DS9: A Stitch in Time by Andrew J. Robinson
Those of you who read my journal comic from last August might recall that I met Robinson at a Trek convention! I'd learned from reading these books that Stitch was considered a white whale among collectors, and now I absolutely understand why. If you're a DS9 fan and you want to try any book from the original run of novels, try this one. By which I mean, try the far easier-to-find audiobook version.
Translation State by Ann Leckie
A Woman of the Iron People by Eleanor Arnason
Fellow SBCF participant Erin Roseberry had shared this title as an inspiration for their comic, The Maker of Grave-Goods, and I was especially interested in trying a book by a Twin Cities author. What a serendipitous find!
Arboreality by Rebecca Campbell
For the third year in a row, a book nominated for the Le Guin Prize makes the list.
Always Coming Home by Ursula K. Le Guin
This is another book I always told myself I'd try someday, and was it ever worth it! I spent some time talking about my experience with this story (and its accompanying materials that fill out the world) in my talk with Evan Dahm on his show.
See you in the new year! I've packed some thick books for a long flight, so I'm starting my 2025 reading pile right away!
Reruns of my previous two lists, 2023, and 2022, below the cut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2023
COMICS:
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou by Hitoshi Ashinano
Out of Style by Devi Putri Megwati
Skip and Loafer by Misaki Takamatsu
The Harrowing of Hell by Evan Dahm
The Infinity Particle by Wendy Xu
Esteban by Matthieu Bonhomme
I covered my ShortBox reccs back in October, but since then I also picked up Pearl Hunting by Hana Chatani when it came to itch.io and adored it.
PROSE:
So yes, maybe I'm cheating by including Moby Dick since I'm not all the way finished, but Whale Weekly really did end up being a great tool for getting me to crack open my gorgeous Evan Dahm-illustrated copy I've had for a while.
My favorite book of the year is Roadside Picnic by Arkady & Boris Strugatsky. I genuinely did read it the first week of January, but after having it recommended to me for years, I'm thrilled it didn't disappoint. Maybe I am someone who likes Russian novels after all???
Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto
Such Nice People by Sandra Scoppettone
Cyteen by C.J. Cherryh (I jokingly placed these three in the "READ 👏 FEMALE 👏 AUTHORS 👏" category because they don't have anything in common other than describing some of the most upsetting/bizarre scenarios I've read this year. Cyteen especially! Wowee!!!)
Brother Alive by Zain Khalid
Glory by Vladimir Nabokov
A Different Trek by David K. Seitz, which I mentioned as my vacation book for the Star Trek convention, but it's given me some great suggestions for more books, both fiction and otherwise. Also, I read... 11 more DS9 books this year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2022
COMICS:
Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa
Vattu by Evan Dahm
The Well by Choo and Jake Wyatt
Wash Day Diaries by Robyn Smith and Jamila Rowser
Some ShortBox Comics Fair entries that are graphic novella length and are really good include Food School by Jade Armstrong and The God of Arepo by Reimena Yee et al.
PROSE:
Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters
The Murders of Molly Southbourne by Tade Thompson
How to Blow Up a Pipeline by Andreas Malm
Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin
Dead Collections by Isaac Fellman
Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov
A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers
The Past is Red by Catherynne M. Valente
edit: oh my god I can't believe I forgot Perfume by Patrick Süskind
Honorable mentions from the pile of DS9 novelizations include Revenant by Alex White (for successfully pulling off a Sara Paretsky-style mystery in space) and Dominion War: Call to Arms by Diane Carey (for absolutely unhinged adjective choices).
