Maelstrom (noun, /ˈmeɪl.strɒm/, from the Dutch maalstroom):

1. a large powerful whirlpool

2. a turbulent tidal current

3. an agitated and/or confusing situation or state of mind

4. a magical core disturbance occurring on an adult, not directly caused by trauma

Real life sort of imploded while I was trying to write this fic. There was not one day that I didn’t consider binning the whole thing and dropping the fest. And then, at one point, I did bin the whole thing and then re-wrote it, like an absolute madwoman. This may as well be a child because it really, genuinely, took a village.

I don’t have enough words to thank, first and foremost, actual ray of starlight, @the-starryknight , for letting me cry my frustrations to them every hour of the bloody day. Then, the brilliant @p1013 for her patience and advice and her eyes on the first version of this that gave me the motivation to keep going. The absolute gem that is @sweet-s0rr0w for the nudging and the poking and the prodding and the idea bouncing and just honestly so so so so so much work and time and all the kindness she poured into this. And the fucking wonderful @nv-md for hand holding, for writerly vibes she sent me across the world and the honest-to-god spell I’m pretty certain she cast so that this fic could be done in time. I don’t know if I could have survived binning a whole 20k and starting from scratch without you.

Also, the most gigantic ever thank you to the @hdsudsfest mods for their understanding and patience: this fest was my first ever fest in the fandom last year and I know I would have been devastated not to do it again this year. Thank you for your kindness, I wouldn’t have made it without the extension that I truly, ridiculously, and shamefully pushed to its very limits.
