Masquerade

Summary: Another year has come and gone and it is yet again time for the yearly winter ball at the castle. Princess Mina is preparing for what she expects to be a party like many others before it, but her meeting with a masked stranger may make things a little more interesting

“Mina? How’s it going in there?” Changho calls. His loud knocking on the door startles Areum and nearly results in her smearing red lipstick all over Mina’s face. Being the king of this country one would think he would be a more patient man.

“Everything is fine, father!” Mina replies, not able to hide the annoyance in her voice. “I will be down in a minute!”

“Good, good… I want to show you the decorations before the guests arrive. They’ve really outdone themselves this year!” Hearing the excitement in her father’s voice she isn’t able to stay mad at him for very long. She knows he has been looking forward to tonight for a long time and she isn’t going to be the one ruining his mood.

The first winter ball was held by Mina’s great grandfather many years ago and since then it has become a yearly tradition. Every year the ruling king or queen holds a great ball at the beginning of winter to celebrate yet another successful year before the colder and darker days takes over. It is always the same noblemen and royals who are invited each year, like king Junseo of Chestermont - an ally country in the great north. In Mina’s humble opinion, he is about as entertaining as a dry piece of bread, but usually he brings his son, crown prince Taekwoon, along. Taekwoon has a bad habit of drinking a little too much at events like this and his low alcohol tolerance usually leads to great entertainment for the guests at the party. Unfortunately, Mina tends to be on the receiving end of Taekwoon’s less than sober gestures of affection and at the end of the night she usually has to carry the crown prince to a secluded chamber to spare at least some of his dignity.

Besides the royals and noblemen, it is tradition that the monarch invites some of the regular people of the country to take part in the festivities as well. It’s never the same people and it varies from blacksmiths to bakers to single mothers. It is a way to keep the relationship between the royal family and the people of the country good and so far, it has worked out.

Mina has never been a fan of the winter ball. In fact, she finds it rather dull. It’s always the same. The royals chat with the royals and the regular people chat with each other in the corners of the castle - behaving as if they’ve intruded in a space where they don’t belong. She always hopes to get a chance to speak casually with some of the people of the country. But this is now her 21th winter ball and until now no one has had the courage to start a conversation with her.

“Your majesty,” Areum says, cutting off Mina’s stream of thoughts. “Do you want me to put this on you now or would you rather wait until later?” In the maid’s hands is a mask, intended for covering the area around the eyes and the nose of a female face. It is made in white velvet, cream pearls hanging from the bottom and swan feathers sticking out from the top of it. It’s beautiful, and Mina can’t help but smile at the sight of it.

“Oh, dear Areum let’s put it on already, I can hardly wait!” she answers, a hint of the same excitement found in her father’s voice to be heard.

It had been her idea for the attendants of the party to wear masks. At first her father hadn’t been too keen on the idea, not wanting to change an old tradition just like that. But he has always found it hard to deny his daughter’s wishes and in the end, he had agreed to it. Mina has high hopes that people not immediately being able to recognize each other will make them talk with someone, they wouldn’t have talked with otherwise. She hopes that for once there won’t be such a big difference between regular people and the royals.

Finally done preparing for the party, Mina joins her father down in the ballroom. He hadn’t lied when he’d said that the servants had undone themselves with the decorations this year. A grand pine tree dressed in all white has been placed next to the buffet table, on which they have placed a big ice sculpture depicting a swan with its wings spread, ready to fly away. Big bouquets of white flowers have been placed on each of the round dinner tables, which have been pushed to the side of the ballroom to make room for dancing in the middle of the room. Standing against the walls reaching all the way to the ceiling are naked white tree branches with tiny warm balls of light illuminating from them. Mina is certain some kind of magic has had to have been used in order to make these.

“Oh, Mina you look beautiful!” Changho says as he takes his daughter’s hands. Mina chuckles lightly at his compliment. “But you can barely see my face.”

“No, but fortunately for me, I know what beauty hides behind that mask,” Changho is quick to save his compliment. Mina is only able to shake her head at her cheesy old man and lets him show her through the room.

“I was thinking that the two of us could sit here,” he says gesturing to one of the dinner tables placed near the center of the room. “Along with King Junseo and the crown prince of course.” Mina lets go of her father to place her hands on her hips with a big sigh.

“But father, that would defeat the whole purpose of the ball,” she says with a stern look on her father. “We’re supposed to split up and sit with our people.”

“You’re right, you’re right…” he answers, his mind seemingly elsewhere. She can tell he’s up to something before he says it.

“But Lord Namil is joining us this year and I was thinking that dinner would be a great opportunity for you to meet his son, Youngjae.” His eyes are fixed on the table as if he’s still arranging the seats in his mind. “He’s a very kind young man, I’m sure you’re going to like him.” Mina gives him a forced smile. Before he’s able to tell her more about this “Youngjae” Mina quickly excuse herself, saying that she needs to check up on the people in the kitchen. Naively, Changho accepts her excuse and lets her go. It isn’t until she’s out of her father’s sight that she allows herself to roll her eyes.

She knows she’s at the age of which it would be appropriate to marry. If it was up to her dad she would have been married long ago and he doesn’t miss a chance to bring it up. But luckily, she manages to avoid her father and his recommendations of other possible suitors until the evening, when the gates are opened to the guests.

Mina watches from a distance, peeking out from one of the marble pillars, as the guests enter the castle. She’s awed by the beauty of the different masks they’re wearing. A slender woman walking with her arms around a young man is wearing a mask shaped like the face of a cat and right after her comes a portly man with a golden mask, the nose of the mask reaching all the way down to his chest. A couple of servants are standing by the door, greeting the guests as they enter. Their masks are identical. Full-faced, white and plain.

The ball room slowly starts filling with the many guests who stands around looking shyly at each other, unsure of what to do, until an elderly man takes the first step and sits down by one of the tables. Slowly the rest follows him, filling out the empty seats in the room.

“Princess Mina!” a familiar voice shouts from the entry of the ball room. In a split-second Mina has turned around and rushes to silence the owner of the voice, who’s standing in the ball room door, his big lanky body resting against the door frame.

“Taekwoon!” she hisses under her breath as she speed-walks over to him. His face might be covered by a black mask, but she would be able to pick out her childhood friend in a dark room of 100 people if she had to.

“Please lower your voice” she says as calmly as she can manage. “Everyone in the castle will hear you.” Taekwoon’s facial expression is muted by the mask but Mina still reads his confusion clearly.

“For one night I would like to just blend in with the people, so they won’t be scared of speaking with me,” she pleads, clasping her hands together. “Please Taekwoon… don’t out me already.” She hasn’t told anyone, but the thought of being anonymous for one night has all along been what attracted her the most to having a masked ball. For one night she would like to just have fun without the troubles of being the future queen on her shoulders. Without her father’s never-ending lectures on future husbands and the future of the kingdom. Taekwoon looks at her for a moment before he nods.

“Alright,” he agrees before strictly pointing at her with his index finger. “But I’m sitting with you. I’m going to throw myself into the ocean if I have to be alone with our fathers for the entire evening.” Mina’s face cracks in a smile.

“Alright, alright,” she says, a laugh bubbling underneath her voice. “But we need to find somewhere to sit before all the seats are taken.” Around them most people have taken their seats and mostly single seats are left. But in the far end on the right they manage to find a table with two unoccupied chairs left and they sit down just in time for the king’s welcoming speech. He welcomes the guests, thanking them for coming, and goes on to the usual spiel about how great it is that they can all unite like this across both social and national borders and so on and so on. Mina quickly loses interest and instead she takes a look around at the people in the room. People of all shapes and sizes are there and to her delight it looks like not a single person in the room isn’t wearing a mask. And for once, no one is staring back at her.

Mina and Taekwoon are accompanied at their table by four other people. A young woman, barely Mina’s age, who presents herself as Joowon, an older lady, Gyuri, who is Joowon’s mom, a young man, Minhyuk, and lastly a middle-age man whose breath smells strongly of cheap alcohol and who never introduces himself. When asked about her name Mina avoids the question by instead asking Joowon to hand her the salt. The conversation runs smoothly, at least between Mina, Joowon and Minhyuk, through dinner and Mina learns, that Joowon works as a seamstress with her mother in the draper’s shop. She makes a comment about how hard and dry her fingertips have become from all the work, to which her mother exclaims a surprised. “Lee Joowon!”. Mina can’t help but laugh. It is very rare for her to be around her peers like this, and the light atmosphere at the table is liberating.

While the servants bring out the plates from the dessert the musicians, the entertainment of the night, sets the stage with their equipment. The conversation is still running smoothly at the table, even Taekwoon has started to join in, when Mina suddenly senses something. She looks around only to spot her father, his broad figure impossible to not recognize despite the mask covering his face, standing next to a young man only a few tables away. He scans the people around him before opening his mouth and once again calling what got Mina’s attention in the first place. “PRINCESS MINA?” She quickly turns back around and as discreetly as humanly possible she pushes herself away from the table. Taekwoon sends her a puzzled look.

“Please excuse me,” she apologizes, her eyes meeting with everyone at the table. “I have to go powder my nose.” Joowon opens her mouth to say something but Mina is gone before she gets the chance. Hiding behind potted plants and servants, she manages to get across the room without being seen. She turns her head to check up on the position of her father and sees that he’s reached Taekwoon who points him towards the restrooms. With her father’s attention redirected she sprints towards the door. She continues running out the door, barely avoiding other guests who have decided to take a stroll in the garden surrounding the castle. She turns her head around to see if she’s escaped her pursuers and is finally stopped when she collides with another person. She makes a surprised sound and grabs onto her poor victim, holding on for dear life as they tumble into a bush. She feels her arms getting cut by the thorns of the bush as the go down, her hair getting stuck on a branch which undoes her bun. Her helpless victim groans lightly underneath her and she quickly pushes herself away.

“I’m terribly sorry”, she apologizes, offering her hand to help the other person up. She finally has a proper look at the person she has run into and realizes that it is a man, seemingly not much older than herself. Luckily, he doesn’t appear to be a prince or a nobleman as his attire is rather plain and far from the extravagant outfits the princes tend to wear. But underneath the modest clothing he seems to be quite fit, judging by his broad shoulders alone. Half of his face is covered by a black mask with red edges, and from underneath the mask a pair of dark eyes shine at her.

“Don’t worry about it,” he says as he wipes the dirt off his pants.

“Are you alright?” he proceeds to ask and for a moment Mina is taken aback by the genuine sound of concern in his voice.

“Oh… yeah, I’m fine,” she finally answers with a stutter. He smiles at her, muttering a soft: “Good,” and this sparks a feeling of warmth in her chest, like a tiny flame, which she cannot explain.

“PRINCESS MINA?” she’s startled when he father’s voice suddenly is heard again, not far from them. She immediately panics.

“Duck!” she exclaims, dragging the man down on the ground with her. He does nothing to resist and soon they’re both hiding behind the bush they seconds ago fell into. Through the bush branches she’s just able to see her father and the young man passing right by them, continuing further into the garden.

“Are you-” the man begins, his eyes following the king as well, but isn’t able to finish his question as Mina quickly cuts him off with a. “No! Whoever you’re thinking off I’m certainly not.” Her lie barely manages to convince herself, but the man doesn’t comment on it.

As her father and the young man gets smaller in the distance Mina finally dares taking her eyes off of them, looking back at the man she has somehow gotten dragged into this whole mess. To her surprise there is not a bit of annoyance or anger in his face, unlike the usual stares she gets when she misbehaves. Instead she’s met by a curiosity and a fascination that makes the little fire inside of her flare up. The flames pull at the corners of her lips and he smiles back at her, his eyes turning into curved lines behind the mask. That’s when she notices the blood.

“Oh… sir,” she says, reaching for the handkerchief in her pocket. “It looks like you’re bleeding.” The smile on his lips slowly fades as he lightly grazes his skin with his fingers. Golden skin meets crimson red just above his jaw line.

“I must have cut myself on the bush” he mutters softly more so to himself than to Mina. She hands him the handkerchief and he silently accepts it. For a few moments she watches him dabbing it on the cut trying to get control of the bleeding. But every time he removes the handkerchief from his jaw, new droplets of blood starts taking form.

“Come with me” Mina finally gathers the courage to say after a long moment of silence. She gets up from the ground. “We can’t have you bleeding all over your shirt.” She offers him her hand and to her delight he gladly accepts her it.

“That should do it” Mina mutters to herself, taking a step back to admire her work. After some cleaning and a lot of dirty napkins she has finally managed to cover the cut on the man’s face with a band-aid. He’s sitting on the bed in her room, looking so unfamiliar in this little world of hers. They haven’t talked much while they’ve been in there and his voice is like a branch breaking in a lonely forest when he finally speaks.

“You’re sure you’re not-“ he tries asking once more but is yet again cut off. “No… no I’m definitely not.” The last hint of conviction her words might have had is gone, and she’s now blatantly lying. He still doesn’t comment on it.

“I’m Hyunwoo” he presents himself with his hand on his chest.

“Hyunwoo” she repeats quietly, taking in every syllable of the name, feeling it tingle in every inch of her body.

“And if you’re not who I think you are” he continues. “May I ask - who are you then?” She considers for a second. Considers telling one more obvious lie. But in the end, she decides against it.

“I’m Mina,” she finally presents herself truthfully. “Just Mina.” She isn’t sure what she expected. Maybe for him to drop to his knees and declare his allegiance to the country and the royal family (which has unfortunately happened to her more than once). But her admitting to who she really is doesn’t seem to change anything. He just continues looking at her with that heart-melting smile.

“Alright… just Mina” he says and gets up from the bed. “Thank you for your help… You really didn’t need to.”

“Well, technically I didn’t need to push you into that bush either.”

“You got a point.” She smiles. She can’t explain what it is. Something about him just makes her feel so at ease. Like she can just be herself for once. It is a rare feeling when living in a castle where your every step is watched, judged and corrected.

“But I am sorry for dragging you away from the party” he apologizes. Mina shrugs.

“Don’t be” she says. “You honestly saved me.” She’s certain that if she looks into those doe-like eyes for one more second she’s going to explode, so instead she moves to open the doors to the balcony. It’s beginning to go dark outside and most of the guest outside have gone inside, seeking shelter from the cold. Faintly, she can hear the sounds of the band playing coming from the open entrance to the castle.

“Saved you?” she didn’t notice Hyunwoo following her until he speaks right behind her. “What could I possibly have saved you from?”

“Let’s just say that I think I was about to be caught up in a very uncomfortable and awkward situation down there” she sighs.

“I’m glad we fended off that situation then” he says. “But now that the danger has passed, maybe I should escort you back to the party?” She feels her heart sink in her chest at his words, but her lips move on their own as they say. “Yeah, you probably should.” He nods, still a little smile pulling the corner of his lips and starts moving towards the door. He is stopped when Mina grabs him by the wrist.

“Or wait” she says, way more desperate than intended. She clears her throat and continues. “I’m… I mean… we could also stay here a for little bit… I mean, if you would like to?” She isn’t used to this. This shyness making her voice quiver. But to her relief he nods.

“Sure,” he says. “I would love to.” Love to. The flame in her chest flares up again.

“It’s a beautiful view you got here” he says, resting his elbows on the baluster. She hums in agreement and takes her eyes off of him to look out over the balcony. It is indeed a beautiful view. From this high up you’re able to see all of the lights in the windows of the houses of Judevaia, their country. On clear days you can even see the forest leading up to Eularctis in the distance. She rarely really appreciates this view. She has grown accustomed to luxuries like these after getting them shoved down her throat all of her life. God, what she wouldn’t give to see this place with a fresh pair of eyes instead of ones tired with routine.

“Yes… you can see quite far” Mina sighs with a small nod, mimicking Hyunwoo as she too rests her elbows on the cold marble of the baluster.

“You can even see my house from here” Hyunwoo says with an almost childlike excitement in his voice.

“Really? Where is it?”

“Right there” the flame licks up Mina’s throat as she feels the warmth of his body when he leans in close to her, pointing towards the middle of the city. She leans in a little closer, trying to get the same view of the city as him, feeling his breath brush against her cheek. From here she is able to narrow it down to a group of houses.

“What is it like?” she asks, turning her head to look at him again, their noses only a few inches from touching. “Living down there I mean.”

“It’s nice” he says, his smile coloring his words. “You should visit some time… I could show you around the town.” She thinks she sees a light blush in his cheeks beneath his mask, but she can’t tell whether it’s due to the cold or if it’s caused by something else. The flame once again flares up inside of her and for a second, she’s worried it’s going to spill out of her ears or her nose. So, she does all that she can to answer him: she smiles like a fool.

They share a moment of comfortable silence before the notes of a new song streams out of the doors. Mina hadn’t noticed they had stopped playing. But she immediately recognizes the song they start playing.

“Oh, I love this song” she sighs before realizing how her thoughts have turned into words. She has loved this song ever since she was a kid and her father has always made sure it’s been played at every ball at the castle. It is likely that he has asked the band to play this particular song to lure her out from her hiding. But she isn’t that easy.

“Really…” Hyunwoo says bringing Mina out of her stream of thoughts and back to the balcony. “Well maybe then… I mean if you want to… maybe… We could dance?” There’s a shakiness to his voice she hasn’t heard before. Like he’s nervous. She doesn’t blame him as her heart rate increases rapidly at the mere thought of dancing with him. Not that she hasn’t danced before. But this is the first time she’s been asked to dance with someone she liked. Really liked in fact.

“I would love to” she says. He smiles and without any further they move closer to each other. He puts his hand around her waist. She puts her hand on his shoulder. And lastly, they entwine their fingers. For once she’s away from the curios eyes that always follow her. For once it’s just her. Just Mina. And Hyunwoo of course. Just Mina and Hyunwoo. They don’t speak a word. They don’t have to. They just sway quietly from side to side in tune with the music. His hands are warm, wrapped safely around her hand and waist.

She isn’t sure what makes her do it, or where she gets the courage from. But after dancing for what feels like an eternity, she lets go of his hand to instead place that hand on his other shoulder. He looks baffled for a second but quickly collects himself, placing his free hand around her waist. Like this, with their chests pressed together, it seems they can’t get any closer. And yet Mina still wants more. Wants to be even closer to him. She really must be out of her mind. Must have lost count of the glasses of wine she’s had throughout the evening. At least that is the only way she can explain this emotion she’s feeling.

She feels something cool on her arm and looks up to see soft snowflakes falling from the sky, landing on her bare arms like cold kisses. The first snow of the year.

“It’s snowing” Hyunwoo mutters, his eyes on the sky as well. Their dance has come to a halt in the middle of the balcony, both of them mesmerized by the sky above, as the last notes of the song fades out.

“Mina I’m-“ Hyunwoo starts after a moment of silence, beginning to let go of Mina, but she holds on to his arm.

“Can I kiss you?” she asks breathlessly. “It’s just… Tomorrow I will have to take off this mask and go back to be Princess Mina… and if this is the last chance I get to maybe kiss someone that I like… I just… I don’t want to waste that chance.” Hyunwoo looks surprised to say the least and for a moment she fears she has ruined the whole evening. But finally, he nods.

“Please do… or I mean… yes, of course you can” he stumbles over his words. “I would like that.” She smiles and with that she closes that small space that’s separating them, connecting their lips in a kiss. It’s short, barely a peck on the lips, but sweet. She pulls away, lobster red in the face, and with a light giggle she tries to brush a strand of hair behind her ear, failing to do so. Gently, Hyunwoo takes her hand and pulls her into his arms. She rests her hands on his chest, feeling his heart beat strongly under her fingers. With one arm around her back he uses the other to brush the unruly hair strand behind her ear, before pulling her in for another kiss.

And the fire inside of her erupts into fireworks.

“Mina, what are you doing up this early?” Changho asks with a yawn as he passes his daughter who to his surprise is already up and fully clothed. The castle is quiet, only the mild rumble of the servants cleaning the ballroom to be heard.

“I couldn’t sleep any longer” she says, pulling a cape over her shoulders. Changho frowns.

“Where are you going?” he continues his interrogation. Not only is it unusual for his daughter to be the first one to be awake of the two, Changho still sporting a silk pajamas, but it is even more unusual for her to leave on her own like this.

“Oh, I’m just going for a small walk” Mina says with a smile, soothing her father’s mind. “I won’t be gone for long.” She pulls the hood of the cape over her head, and before her father’s gets a chance to stop her, she raises her hand to goodbye and slips out of the door.

It has become a tradition of hers to take a walk in the city after a night like this one. The stuffy ballroom always makes her feel like her mind is overflowing with all of the different sensory input. But nothing cures this feeling like the fresh morning air. The snow is covering the streets like a duvet, crunching softly underneath her boots as she walks. Usually she brings Areum along with her on a trip like this. But a lot of things seem to be out of the ordinary today as she heads for the heart of the city, instead of walking in the outskirts of it as usual. After all, it has been quite an unusual night.

It’s still pretty early in the morning and yet the streets are filled with people. Men and women on their way to work, mothers walking with babies in strollers and kids playing in the fresh snow. Mina is seconds away from being hit by a snowball and she pulls down her hood as she proceeds onwards.

Suddenly, something demands her attention. A smell. She inhales deeply, the sweet smell of freshly baked bread making her sigh out of delight. She turns her head to spot a bakery across the street. She’s certain the head cook at the castle has already prepared something for breakfast. Eating something now and ruining her appetite would definitely make the cook upset. But Mina simply can’t pass on a heavenly smell like this and before she can change her mind she runs across the street.

A bell above the door rings when Mina opens the door to the shop. It’s quite small with different types of breads and buns stacked behind the counter. On top of the counter is a small glass cabinet with various beautifully decorated cakes displayed. She walks closer to the cabinet to get a better look at the cakes when someone yells from the back. “I’ll be right there!” Her heart has stopped in her chest even before he enters the room. His mask is off today, and his formal attire has been replaced with an apron, but she surely would be able to recognize that voice anywhere.

“Mina” Hyunwoo says in a surprised tone. She smiles at him. He smiles at her. “You came.”

Description: Wanting to get out of your parents house and experience what the world had to offer is way more expensive than people tell you it will be. So when your glamorous “manager to the stars” cousin Hoseok hooks you up with a job as the live-in maid for a hillside, massive mansion, you feel as though life might actually be looking up. That is until the mansion’s absentee high profile celebrity owner surprises you by moving back in leaving you to wonder if this mansion is big enough for you and his huge ego.

Chapter 3:

“Now if you’ll excuse me,” You push yourself away from in front of the refrigerator putting the mop in the small cleaning supply closet a few steps away. Taehyung hasn’t moved an inch. Now it’s his turn to be speechless. “I have a job to continue doing seeing as I’m the main person making sure your house doesn’t end up looking like an abandoned dump with all the dust the piling up from no one EVER USING ANYTHING HERE,” You practically scream the last part in his direction, words still reverberating off the walls as you turn swiftly on your heel to head rather quickly to your room on the West side of the mansion.

You had a phone call to make.

“Yo, yo, yo Y/N-o! What can I do for my awesome cousin on this beautiful day?” Hoseok’s sing song voice just made this situation a whole lot more annoying to you for some reason. Steam was practically coming out of your ears, you were so pissed off. As you plop yourself on your large bed, little Hodu immediately jumps up to snuggle with you.

“What the hell Hoseok?!” You screech through the phone at a half yelling, half whispering level. Hodu being the only thing stopping you from making a bigger fuss since you didn’t want to scare the puppy. And besides, Taehyung could have followed you to your side of the mansion so you didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of hearing you go crying to your cousin (and his manager) after what he said to you. Or rather, what you said to each other.

“Woah, Y/N. Calm down. I’m sensing some hostility here!” The ever smiling boy laughed from the other side of the phone. God knows where he could be right now. Brazil? Hong Kong? Tokyo? LA? Judging by the loud chatter in the background it seems as though whatever city he’s in right now, he’s definitely somewhere with a lot of people.

“How could you not tell me that I am the live-in maid for Kim Taehyung, the most famous pop star in the world?!” A year ago you would have asked that question with excitement and happiness, but now it’s spilling out of your mouth with fire and anger. “And that he didn’t know he even had a live-in maid?!”

A loud round of laughter along with some glasses clinking comes from the background of Hoseok’s side but fades as it sounds like he is walking away from the main source of the noise. “Well this definitely isn’t the reaction I was expecting from you,” He chuckles. “I thought you would be way happier about this. Jumping up and down- Thanking me even... Little miss Future Mrs. Kim Taehyung,” He teases.

At that your cheeks turn red with embarrassment. Damn Hoseok for reading your personal journal from your lovesick fangirl days! You didn’t have any siblings so Hoseok had gladly taken the role as your older brother, doing all the annoying things an older brother would do growing up. Like reading through your diary for example.

A scoff leaves your mouth. What a naive little teenager you were. “Well, that was before I found out he’s actually the biggest douchebag in the entire world!” You can’t help but yell that part a little bit. Seriously, how does Hoseok manage him? You would want to tear your hair out every time you even so much as looked at him.

“Oh come on Cuz’. He’s really not that bad. The fame just got to his head a little! Trust me, there’s a great guy underneath that front he puts on for everyone,” Hoseok explains, his voice a little muffled with the sound of crunching of chips in between some of his words.

You sigh. Of course Hoseok has a different opinion on him, he’s his manager. “Well he might be like that with you, but you should have heard wha-”

Hoseok’s infectious laughter bursts through the phone. He’s clearly not listening to you anymore. “Oh there’s no way in hell you can beat me at Pool, Jeon Jungkook!”

This is a serious issue! Why can’t Hoseok ever just- Wait.

Did I hear that name right? Jeon Jungkook? The up-and-coming singer/dancer/heartthrob Jeon Jungkook?

You’ve got to be kidding, he is so hot! How does Hoseok know literally every freaking famous person ever!

Ugh. Focus up Y/N. You have a different pop star to deal with right now.

“Seriously, Hoseok, listen to me!” It comes out as more of a plea then you would like it to but really, how are you supposed to work for this guy? What if Taehyung fires you? What are you going to do about your new life in the city if that happens? You finally had a good group of friends and really fun hobbies... You couldn’t move back home. You still needed to find your calling here.

“Yah! Wait for me kid! Look, Y/N, I gotta go,” His voice sounds rushed and shallow as if he’s just started to jog somewhere. “Just trust me on this, ok Y/N? You’re the best-”

And click.

“Hoseok? Hoseok!! Hobi!” You pull the phone away from your ear to reveal your home screen once again lighting up your cell phone. He hung up on you. Great.

Obviously you were on your own in this situation.

The remainder of your frustration exits your body in a good old fashioned muffled scream into your pillow.

How did you end up here? What happened to the amazing set up of being a maid living in a humongous mansion, not having to worry about rent or bills, only truly cleaning up after yourself and Hodu every day on top of the light cleaning and other miscellaneous tasks you did weekly to upkeep the place?

Oh yeah. Kim Taehyung happened.

Looking back, you may have overreacted in the situation with Taehyung. You can usually keep your mouth shut well enough but once it crosses a certain point of disrespect, you always tend to snap. You just had such little tolerance for anyone who thought they could treat another human being with such a superiority complex as that that boy had.

So what now? Obviously you still were going to live and work here if you could. You needed this job and a place to live. As much as you loved your parents, going to live back home, leaving the beginning of a life that you made for yourself in the city just wasn’t an option.

You’ll just have to endure it. Living here while simultaneously working around Taehyung and his huge ass ego.

And you hoped. Maybe, maybe you just caught him on a bad day. Maybe he wasn’t the egotistical douchebag he made himself out to be.

Maybe if he apologized, you could actually be his friend.

Yeah, you weren’t getting that apology any time soon.

Thankfully you hadn’t seen Taehyung for the rest of the day. Only venturing out of your wing of the mansion to tiptoe to the backyard avoiding ‘Taehyung Territory’ (which you had officially decided to call it) to that much needed sauna before rushing back to your side making yourself dinner in your own kitchen and tucking yourself and Hodu into bed early.

But the next day, barely even a step out of the white marbled hallway leading out of your wing, you collided with a hard, tall body, so hard it almost knocked you to the ground.

Inwardly you cringed. You didn’t even need to look up to figure out who you had just body checked. There goes your plan to approach him casually and try to make amends. Truly, could your luck get any worse with this dude?

Bracing yourself for the worst, slowly you lift your head to meet his gaze. His features sat stone cold, clearly unaffected by your unfortunate clumsiness. He didn’t even make a move to catch you in case you fell.. That douchebag..

The stare you two share goes on for a couple of seconds too long, his expression never changing. Well clearly he isn’t going to say anything so you guess it’s up to you.

“Hi... Um- I mean I’m sorry. I should have watched where I was going..” Ugh. Getting that out was difficult. Wow the ground is so fascinating! And it definitely isn’t as scary as the death stare Taehyung is giving you right now.

Well at least you’re dressed in presentable clothes today, with your usual look of slightly wavy hair and enough makeup to make you actually look kind of nice. Not that you really cared what he thought about how you looked but honestly, what was the boy doing over here?

“You’re up early.” Is all he says back to you. Morning voice apparent in the raspiness of his speech.

Wow, thanks Captain Obvious. Your painting class this morning starts at 9:00am and the drive there could take a while depending on traffic. It was currently 8:00am and honestly if you’re going to be stuck with him for a while beating around the bush like this you were definitely going to be late.

A realization hits you. Crap, this is the first time you’ve seen him since you blew up on him yesterday. What if he walked all the way over here from his side of the mansion to fire you as soon as he woke up?

Oh no, oh no, oh no. Please don’t fire me. He can’t do this. You can’t lose this job.

You need to do some damage control. Plastering on a polite smile onto your face to hide your fear, you look up at him once again. “What can I do for you, Taehyung?”

Why did we have to start off on the wrong foot like this? There are so many things you’re going to miss out on once you’re forced to move back home. No more karaoke nights with your city friends, no more painting and dance classes, no more fun nights out drinking-

“I believe you have something of mine.” His low voice breaks you out of your downward spiral.

What? You have something of his? What could you possibly have that is his? He didn’t even get here until yesterday.

The small sounds of yipping behind you answers your question and the realization hits you.

How could you forget about little Hodu? He must have heard Taehyung’s voice from the other side of the door. Nodding your head and trying to hide your look of surprise that his first conversation with you hasn’t yet turned to him firing you, you turn and head back down the hallway to open your door.

Aww, you really loved Hodu… He was one of the only things to keep you company in this huge house. But Hodu was Taehyung’s and even though you’ve practically been his mother for the past couple of months, Hodu did belong to him...

Taking a deep breath and mentally saying goodbye to your little friend, you open the door slowly before it pushes against you as Hodu happily comes charging out of your hallway and directly into Taehyung’s arms.

Your gaze follows Hodu as Taehyung happily sweeps little Hodu up into his arms with ease and rises him up in the air Lion King style.

The brightest smile you’ve ever seen on Taehyung covers his face and he looks genuinely... Happy. You didn’t realize before, but this is the first time you have seen an authentic smile on his face since you met him.

It kind of reminds you of how Taehyung was when you first started liking him at the beginning of his career. Carefree, loving, unapologetically happy, boy-ish, silly. Later in the years that you had liked him you had noticed a change in the way he acted in interviews and fan meets. Of course he still put on a happy face but something had changed as he grew up in the industry. You chalked it up to him just being more used to the celebrity life, that he was just a little tired maybe… But maybe it was because you now knew him in real life without any need to put on a happy face for a camera that you realized that Taehyung may have just been pretending to be this perfect angel for a really long time now.

Or maybe you were reading too deeply into this.

But honestly, ever since yesterday you weren’t really sure if the boy in front of you had any capability of being able to be nice to anyone or anything. Well at least he was capable of showing real emotion even if it was towards a dog.

Taehyung’s gaze returns back to you and his expression instantly goes cold again.

Glad to see that lasted.

“You’re dismissed.” Taehyung snaps turning on his heel to head towards the direction of his own wing of the mansion.

His curt words left you confused. “I’m sorry what? I’m dismissed?” The words come out before you can stop them. Seriously Y/N when did it become so hard for you to keep your thoughts to yourself?

Taehyung slowly turns back halfway towards you, cocking his head. Hodu still happily panting from excitement in his arms. “I said, you’re dis-missed.” He says, overly annunciating each part.

“Unless you care to stay in that same spot all day long. Which I personally wouldn’t care to do but, be my guest.” He purrs, talking so nonchalantly it bothers you in an indescribable way.

Suddenly, he snaps the hand that’s not holding Hodu up quickly like he’s just remembered something important. “Wait I’m sorry, I misspoke. I meant to say..” Taehyung slowly leans towards you, his face close enough for you to be able to see the faint scar near his lips. “Be my maid,” He pulls back as his lips curve into that taunting smirk of his, his words laced with malice and mockery.

You’re dumbfounded. Stuck in place. You try to come up with a witty comeback but you just... go blank. How could someone be so blatantly rude like that?

You try your best not to look surprised by his correction. That’s what he wants. He wants to get a rise out of you. He wants to make you angry and upset. But you wouldn’t give him that satisfaction. Not today, not ever.

“What, so you’re not going to fire me?” Is all you can retort. You didn’t care if this was the worst time to bring it up. You didn’t care if he was going to throw you out on your butt in two seconds after asking. You had to know if he was going to do it. You just couldn’t leave this fear hanging over your head without an answer.

Taehyung arches his eyebrow as if to acknowledge your courage but his expression remains cold as ice. “I can’t fire you. Trust me I tried. Turns out Hoseok is the one who hired you and controls your pay. Technically he’s the only one who can fire you. So I guess I’m stuck with you.” And with that he stalks back into Taehyung Territory with little Hodu in his arms.

You don’t know whether to feel relieved or not. Yes, you were happy that you still had a place to stay and you didn’t have to move back in with your parents leaving your beginnings of a life behind.

But on the other hand, Taehyung was right. You were stuck with him.

This mansion might be big, but Taehyung’s ego was already suffocating you.

old mx fic dump pt. 1: in which i don’t forsee myself continuing any of these but i also don’t want to delete them -- so i’m laying them to rest here :) thanks for the good times sweethearts and perhaps one day i’ll bring u out again in a different form

Ch.1 agrimony (my gratitude for the past)

The garden has been overrun by nature for months on end at this point.

Obviously, Jooheon can’t complain, because part of it is his own fault. However, he wishes his natural sense of organization was better. Really, as a garden nymph this is where he should excel! With the owners of the garden gone though, he just feels no motivation to clean up the area at all.

The previous owners had liked reds and yellows, so he had kissed the little buds gently with the intent of growing warm tulips and irises for the coming spring. The family had taken lovingly to the garden, spending mornings and afternoons taking care of the flowers and sharing warm looks with each other. Their daughter had giggled when they had tucked a tulip behind each ear and told her that she was as sweet as honey. Jooheon had watched on fondly in a faraway tree wondering whether he should leave them a handful of pink carnations to express his gratitude.

Those few months were a symbiotic relationship: Jooheon would keep the garden in tip-top condition and the family’s happiness and kindness would keep him motivated to actually cultivate the garden.

Now, the family has moved out and away into another house, and he’s been left with a wild garden that he feels neither the need to cultivate or control. Everything has been left to grow by its own devices and he often plants whatever he feels like, no matter whether the plants clash or not. Weeds mingle with curling vines on the rusty gate and all kinds of flowers are interspersed within the garden. Jooheon pouts as he lightly smooths his fingers over the earth and wills some larkspurs into his once clean garden.

“Another addition to the pile, I guess…,”

he sighs as he plucks them and gently places them onto a huge pile of flowers that has been accumulating over the weeks.

Jooheon’s been thinking of pressing them individually and making them into a book that classifies every flower by meaning, color, and growth pattern. Yup, that’s honestly how bored he’s become.

Thinking back on it, in the past he never would have spent his time like this. There was always something to do: cleaning up overgrown vines on the window of the little girl’s room, quietly clearing a path for the family’s dog, and just making sure the garden was neatly growing the whole time.

Now he’s so bored he’d resort to a task that’s usually left to younger nymphs. He’s already done his fair share of classifying flowers, and there is no legitimate reason for him to do it again. Maybe, he thinks as he carelessly weaves a crown of leftover irises and lilies, he could give the book to Changkyun. It’s been awhile since they’ve seen each other and the younger nymph is probably working on the same assignment.

The lilies and tulips rustle in an almost disgruntled manner, as if to complain that he’s going to leave them behind in this mess of a place. Jooheon gives them a dimpled grin and places the garland on his head to reassure them that he would never abandon this place, no matter how messy it becomes (will become possibly in the future, unfortunately).

The noon sun feels good on his skin, especially since the chill of early autumn has just arrived. Jooheon feels that now would be a great time to curl up in between the small heap of fiery leaves that has just gathered underneath his tree and take a short nap.

Well, he really doesn’t have anything better to do does he?

(Besides actually doing his job and maintaining the garden, of course).

Whatever, Jooheon reasons. It’s not like anyone will actually be around to notice (or unfortunately) not notice what’s been going on in the abandoned garden.

With this, he firmly nods to himself and decides that a nap is definitely in order.

It must be at least five in the afternoon by the time he finally wakes up. It’s with a sigh that Jooheon reluctantly drags himself out of the leaf pile, all the while brushing orange and red out of brown strands.

Reasonably, five hours is probably way too long for a nap, but honestly Jooheon can’t bring himself to care about that right now, when all he can hear is the excited chatter from seemingly every flower in the entire garden!

It’s been so long since the garden has felt this alive and noisy, and that can only mean only one thing. Someone new must be entering the garden!

It’s with his heart in his throat that Jooheon quickly shifts himself into the shadows of orange leaves on a nearby tree to hide himself from the stranger (intruder?), and at the same time to allow himself to have a clear view of whomever is pushing open the vine tangled gate.

The gate creaks open up with 3 long screeches, almost as if announcing the visitor with the audacity of a morning rooster.

It feels like the entire garden is completely still. Everything has stopped, and Jooheon can feel himself holding his breath.

The tension is so thick that even the birds have seemed to stop moving.

The tulips and lilies seem to tinkle with laughter inside his head.

Every carnation, every chrysanthemum, every flower in that seems to be in existence shifts simultaneously forward. Even the dead leaves rasp and crinkle toward the gate.

Jooheon finds himself unconsciously ducking out of the autumn leaves and leaning forward in trepidation as well.

All this time, what felt like a shiver in the back of his neck seems to grow and grow, until it rolls across his skin like dewdrops in the morning sun.

And with one footstep, his whole world seems to burst back into movement once again.

Ch. 2 single aster (thinking of you)

Interlude: anemone

Jooheon doesn’t want to admit it, but truthfully, he’s been lonely for the past few months.

He never directly interacted with the past family, but just watching and helping the family from afar made him feel happy inside.

The way the daughter had gasped in delight every time fresh flowers grew beneath her windowsill

The couple’s laughter as they kissed in a ring of hyacinths

And even the dog’s enthusiasm at ransacking through dead leaf piles Jooheon had collected for him earlier in the afternoon

It had filled Jooheon up inside. He could feel just how much the family had appreciated what seemed to them to be only a hyperactive garden.

He realizes, now, that it was because he felt needed. The family’s garden would not have survived and prospered without him, and he had devoted those past few months of his life to doing everything he could for them.

Their departure had left with with a deep ache inside, which he tried to cover up with the facade of boredom and laziness.

It wasn’t because he couldn’t properly decorate the garden, or because he had no idea what to grow.

He was really just lonely.

But now, that’s all been set to change

Because there’s going to be a new owner of the garden now.

With the arrival of the human, Jooheon’s garden bursts into a chattering mess.

Flowers that hadn’t made a sound in months are suddenly cackling so loudly he feels like the sound will somehow make him go blind.

To an outsider, it would just look like the wind is blowing extra hard through the plants, but Jooheon can feel the power of the garden rising and snaking up through his entire body.

It’s like everything’s come back to life.

The tulips and lilies ring against head and urge him to turn toward the gate.

With trepidation in his heart, Jooheon turns to look at the stranger

And oh!

(Jooheon feels his little garden nymph heart beat a thousand times faster, and his skin starts buzzing with electricity)

The stranger is quite handsome.

Even from his vantage point in a tree, Jooheon can tell he’s a pretty large man. His arms especially-that black muscle tank hides nothing and Jooheon can see just how defined the man is.

As the man works on packing away boxes through the back porch window, his tank reveals a tanned and hardened stomach.

(Jooheon thinks he can even see a hint of a his robust pectoral muscle, and he silently slaps himself for being such a creep)

After an hour, the man finally finishes moving everything into his house, and now he’s covered in a light sheen of sweat.

(they make the contours of his muscles glisten and Jooheon blushes at how smoothly they seem to ripple in the evening light)

He decides to send the man some relief from the heat, and he whistles quietly to the wind to ask it to gently blow through his garden.

When the wind finally arrives, the man’s handsome stone face breaks into the brightest smile Jooheon has ever seen. His eyes crinkle into upturned slits, with small wrinkles coming out the corner of them, and he smiles so widely that Jooheon can see the small overbite of his (bunny) teeth in his mouth.

Jooheon internally squeals at how truly adorable this man is, but then he stretches his arms above his head and oh my god jooheon takes everything back because he can literally see his entire side through his tank top and his muscles are flexing and his skin is smooth, golden, and glistening and Jooheon is actually going to have a heart attack and-

Shit!

He apparently flipped out so hard he managed to fall out of his tree.

And right onto something soft, warm, and solid at the same time.

Fuck, Jooheon doesn’t even need to look down to know that it’s the new guy he’s sitting on

For the past months he didn’t bother hiding his form in nature because there was no one around to hide himself from, so he’s gotten used to just sitting out in the open. Of course, besides staying visible to humans, Jooheon also just happened to situate himself in the tree that’s directly above the outside patio, so basically right above where the new guy is.

Jooheon can’t believe how fucking stupid he is, and instead of acknowledging the absurdity of his actions he decides to embarrass himself even further by burying his face into the man’s (robust) chest to avoid looking him in the eye.

He guesses there’s no better time than now to introduce himself.

With a muffled sigh, he muffles an introduction into the man’s pecs.

“Um, hi well my name’s Lee Jooheon, and i swear I’m not some weird neighbor that just sneaks into gardens to check out men, and fuck ok I wasn’t checking you out, but you’re really attractive and I’m really not a creep please don’t call the police I’m actually a garden nymph don’t freak out?”

There’s a long moment of dead silence where all Jooheon can hear is the erratic beat of his own heart and the annoying laughter of the crown of tulips and lilies that’s apparently still hung around his head.

He resolves to at least take the stupid crown apart after this affair blows over.

In the middle of his plan to enact revenge on his flowers, Jooheon slowly feels a vibration build up below him, and he realizes that the man below him is laughing. It slowly grows until Jooheon can feel his body shake with the laughter below him.

Jooheon can feel his face heating up so quickly he thinks he’ll explode of embarrassment, so he decides that the best course of action would be to obviously continue to bury his face in the chest below him.

This goes on for awhile, with Jooheon getting progressively redder and hiding his face in the man’s chest and said man continuing to laugh (at him, probably).

Finally, Jooheon can feel the vibrations subside and he gets up the nerve to finally look the man in the eye. What he sees is a close up version of the adorable wrinkle eyed smile he saw before in the tree, and he feels his pounding heart calm a little.

The man looks him in the eyes and rumbles in a deep baritone. “Well, Jooheon the make believe garden nymph turned stalker, I’m Son Hyunwoo and I’m flattered that you’d invade my garden to tell me i’m attractive.”

Jooehon immediately splutters to defend himself. “No, I swear I’m not joking! I really am a garden nymph! I’m physically and spiritually part of this garden because I’ve belonged to this plot of land since the beginning of time.”

Shit, that was cheesy and definitely something he remembers only reciting in front of the elder nymphs as they critically appraised a crowd of them during their final exams. But, hey, it’s a basically the textbook response that was written up for the purpose of awkward situations like these. Probably, anyway.

Hyunwoo looks at him with a skeptically raised eyebrow and he sits up, simultaneously bringing Jooheon up with him, who realizes that he somehow still has his hands clutched in Hyunwoo’s (barely there) muscle tank.

Hyunwoo slowly uncurls Jooheon’s fingers from around his shirt material with his (big) hands and before turning them over to gaze at his palms. He then looks Jooheon dead in the eye and smirks.

“Prove it”

Oh, the fight is on.

Jooheon doesn’t like cocky assholes, and even though this guy looks way too good with that stupid smirk, his own pride on the line, and if he’s been asked to basically prove his own existence, then he’ll use any and all methods to prove this guy wrong.

“Fine, you want me to prove it? I’ll prove it to your right here, right now!”

Jooheon immediately stands up, yanking hyunwoo up with him, who’s still cradling his upturned palms.

Now, he realizes that he has to tilt his head up to even look hyunwoo in the eyes, which means that this muscle-head must be at least a good head taller than him, and this somehow irritates him even more.

Jooheon knows he hasn’t used powerful magic in years, and this really isn’t a good idea, but this fucking height difference along with the guy’s (rippling) muscles and cocky attitude makes him want to show him just how powerful and real of a garden nymph he is.

He clutches Hyunwoo’s hands as hard as he can because he knows he’s going to need to ground himself to something in order to carry out a spell of this magnitude successfully. The fact of it is, once this spell blows over he might actually collapse, and he hopes Hyunwoo’s grip will be strong enough to keep him stable.

Jooheon takes one last deep breath before closing his eyes on and concentrating on the very center of his being. He calls up long buried power up from his core, power that hasn’t been touched for decades, to flow through all his veins, to fill him up from head to toe.

He can feel himself growing warmer and warmer, until the heat from the buildup of energy feels unbearable. It feels like it might burst right out of him and he knows that’s exactly the point he needs to be at in order to execute this spell.

What Jooheon is going to attempt is a cleansing spell. Most of the supernatural community thinks that garden nymphs are just simple creatures who like fawning over plants in the human world, and they simply dismiss them as weak. Sure, that may be what they mostly do now, but what most of the supernatural community doesn’t know is that in darker days garden nymphs were a key component in purifying the world of evil spirits. The power of nature is a pure and direct opponent to the presence of evil spirits. Where demons and ghouls are unnatural manifestations of dark energy, nature’s children were pure souls born to bring light to the world. Of course, garden nymphs had a direct link to nature, making one of the most effective beings to counteract evil spirits.

In the past, when the world had been largely unbalanced and tilted toward dark energy, nymphs had been trained to carry out mass purification spells to cleanse large plots of land and make it suitable for human life. These were Cleansing Spells, and they required unusually amounts of energy to carry out. Most of them were cast in large groups, with multiple nymphs pooling their energy together to be able to actually cast a spell large enough to have a positive effect on impure land.

Most nymphs now don’t practice such powerful techniques anymore because there really isn’t a need for such wide-scale purification in neither the human or supernatural world. Younger nymphs like Changkyun aren’t even taught the spell anymore, which is for sure something Jooheon loves holding over his head (along with other petty things) to Changkyun’s chagrin. Jooheon really only uses the spell every few decades or so, and it’s usually on a much smaller scale.

He knows his garden doesn’t really need a cleansing spell of the kind of scale he’s about to release, but he’s determined to show hyunwoo the extent of his power and prove just how real of a garden nymph he claims himself to be. Besides, most of the excess power will just go towards making the garden grow unnaturally fast, of which he’ll happily leave for hyunwoo to clean up.

It’s with this final thought that Jooheon internally nods to himself and finally releases his spell.

The exact moment that he lets go is an absolute feeling of ecstasy. He can feel his mouth dropping open and his eyes rolling into the back of his head as they try to stretch open to their very limits to release the power that is hurtling through his every vein, artery, and capillary. He feels like he’s become a small sapling of light in the tree he was born from again, like a child reunited with the warmth of a mother’s womb. It’s as if all he can taste and smell and breath and see is the pure white waves of light energy he’s just released. If he could die, this is how exactly how he would choose to go: a moment where he can feel the universe meshed into the fibers of his very being and his own existence scattering into the light. Forever embedded into the material universe, yet no longer existing at the same time.

As Jooheon feels the last sparks of power fizzle out of him, he finally comes down from his, for a lack of better word, high. He’s immediately assaulted by a feeling of deep lethargy, and suddenly sleeping beauty’s fate doesn’t sound so bad right now.

When he looks down, he realizes he’s clutching onto Hyunwoo’s hands so hard that his palms have gone white and that he’s shaking with the effort to hold himself upright. Jooheon swears that this spell had better have convinced hyunwoo of his supernatural status because in 2.3 seconds he is literally going to pass out.

When he sees the sky and the ground rolling towards him, he resigns himself to a very long nap in the grass. However, at the very last moment before his eyes close he can see just how tall the grass and flowers have grown, and he takes some small sliver of satisfaction in knowing just how tough the cleanup job will be for one son hyunwoo.

Because there’s no way jooheon will help the poor human out with the mess he brought onto himself. No way. Jooheon had a point to prove, and he’s not going back on his own words.

(ok fine, so he may have gone slightly overboard, and hyunwoo had every right to question his strange claim, since he literally did fall out of a tree and into his lap and then tell him not to call the cops. Jooheon decides to make better decisions in the future, and maybe he’ll help hyunwoo out with cleanup. But only for a little bit. And only if he asks nicely. With his muscles).

It really doesn’t matter at this point because Jooheon’s eyelids finally slip shut and he feels himself slip out of the grasp of consciousness, and into a deep sleep.

It’s a shame that Jooheon can’t stay awake for even a millisecond longer, because it’s just moments later that hyunwoo gently picks him up, cradles him against his chest, and carries him into his house for a good night’s rest.

As jooheon’s head lolls loosely against Hyunwoo’s chest, something light slips off his head and lands lightly on the ground.

Outside, the fallen crown of tulips and lilies chatter wildly among themselves in the tall grass. No matter what happens next, life in the garden is about to get much more exciting in the coming days, and they are very much looking forward to it.

Ch. 3 double aster (sharing your sentiments)- WRITE JOOHEON IN DARK RED BOMBER JACKET FIGHTER OUTFIT

Warm

is the first thing that Jooheon’s sleep addled mind supplies him with, when he finally drags his sleep-crusted eyes apart.

He slowly raises his head to take in the new setting and he scrunches his eyes at the bright sunlit window just above the head of the bed.

The garden nymph usually wakes up to windy whispers and cool morning dew running down his skin. But today he wakes to a soft bed filled with warm sunlight and an indescribable scent. There’s something about it that draws him in, so Jooheon closes his eyes and buries his nose into the blankets around him to breath it in deeply.

What he smells is something that is new and yet intrinsically familiar at the same time: like the scent of rain in the deepest, wildest wood, sinking into the moss and refreshing every particle of life there. It’s musky and rich, and it makes Jooheon’s stomach twist with what feels like yearning. He wants to cocoon himself so deeply into this smell that it will somehow ingrain itself into every fiber of his being and remain with him forever.

Surrounded in soft blankets and warm sunlight, Jooheon feels like he’s finally home.

The more he unconsciously cuddles into the softness around him, the more he realizes that his previous thought doesn’t make any sense.

1. he literally met this guy yesterday.

2. he was also born as a ball of energy from some metaphysical world beyond the grasp of human senses, including scent.

3. he’s basically lived in this garden for the latter half of his life and in a physical sense, it should be his home now.

So why does he only feel like this now?

As Jooheon’s internal questioning escalates, the door quietly opens and the new owner of the house peeks his head in.

What he sees is one absolutely adorable, 100% certified garden nymph, that seems to be cuddling into his old blankets and going through what looks like an internal existential crisis.

He clears his throat and Jooheon startles out of his trance. He whips his head off the pillow and meets hHyunwoo’s brown eyes with his own.

The silence that follows is so appropriately awkward and tense that hyunwoo wonders that if he just backed out now and closed the door with him whether or not the situation would magically solve itself.

Jooheon has never been good at math, but he starts calculating the exact angle and force he would need to be able to throw himself out of the bedroom window as quickly as possible and transform himself into a flower so that he’ll never have to look hyunwoo in the eyes again after yesterday’s magical fiasco.

Of course, neither of them actually decide to do what they’re thinking, and instead hyunwoo opts to awkwardly clear his throat again before speaking. “You really did a number on the garden.”

Jooheon glowers at him before replying,“Well, you did ask me to prove myself. I hope you’re properly convinced now.”

Hyunwoo can’t help but want to tease the garden nymph a little, so he smirks and asks, “What if I said no?”

Jooheon makes as if he wants to throw himself at Hyunwoo, but instead he wavers and collapses back onto the bed.

“Then you’ll get absolutely no help from me when you have to clean up the mess outside. It won’t be easy either way, and it definitely won’t be easy for you without me.”

Hyunwoo sits down on the bed by Jooheon’s bed and gives him a dazzling smile. “Then I guess it’s lucky that I actually believe you, huh? Mr. I’m-not-a-stalker-but-actually-a-garden-nymph?”

Jooheon quickly rolls over to hide his face in the blankets because he can feel his cheeks heating up again for the 2nd time in less than 24 hours, and he squeaks out, “Please forget about that.”

Something about the boy before him is so endearingly adorable that it brings out a side that hyunwoo rarely shows. His friends are usually the ones teasing him about his emotionless facade, but with Jooheon Hyunwoo finds it easy for him to slip into that role himself. The way the other had gripped his hands so tightly, looked into his eyes with such burning determination, and how he had hid his reddening face when he was embarrassed tugs at something in Hyunwoo’s heart.

He wants to see more of it- what other expressions Jooheon can make, and especially just how hard hyunwoo can make him blush.

Before hyunwoo can formulate his (evil) plan to continue teasing Jooheon, the nymph in question rolls around to pout cutely up at him with wide eyes and plush lips.With a high pitched voice and pleading expression he asks Hyunwoo to, “Please forget about that? Please?”

As a mature, 24 year old man, Hyunwoo somehow feels the irrational urge to squeal like a 12 year old over some cute video of a cat’s paws online. Except that he’s no longer 12 and Jooheon isn’t a cat video, but an actual person in front of him pulling the cutest aegyo he’s ever seen.

Hyunwoo muffles whatever strange sound that’s attempting to escape his throat and tries to harden his facial muscles before slowly asking, “Were you trying to use aegyo on me?”

They both silently stare at each other before Jooheon finally drops his cutesy act and flops facedown onto the bed. “What does that even mean?”, he mumbles into the blankets.

“It means,” hyunwoo proceeds to poke what seems to be the lump’s butt, “that 20 year old garden nymphs shouldn’t be trying to pull cutesy acts in front of other men.”

The lump proceeds to squeak and scrunch away from Hyunwoo’s unexpected finger.

“Well, I’m actually 22,” Jooheon continues to mumble into the bed, “At least by your human standards, anyway.”

“Did it work though?” And as Jooheon asks, Hyunwoo can feel that irrational urge again - to tell him yes, that it was absolutely precious, and that Jooheon should never do it again if he doesn’t want Hyunwoo to suffer from heart issues for the rest of his life.

For the first time since their meeting, Hyunwoo can feel his own face reddening as he remembers Jooheon’s aegyo, and he has to turn away from the lump before replying, “If I say yes, will you promise never to do that again?”

Jooheon immediately springs up in surprise and he sees that hyunwoo is turned away from him, almost as if he’s embarrassed?

Oh my god, is he actually blushing? Did his stupid little cutesy act actually work? The garden nymph internally counts that as a victory point for himself, and he slowly scoots himself and his lump of blankets closer to Hyunwoo’s broad backside.

Said embarrassed man immediately feels suspicious as he hears rustling behind him, and he turns around to see Jooheon much closer to him than before and looking up at him with a devious grin.

“So you said you’ll listen to whatever I say as long as I never do that again?” he asks mischievously.

Hyunwoo quickly whips his head around to protest, “I never-” but he’s cut off as he comes face to face with another full-lipped, big-eyed, pouting look.

“Are you sure about that? Hyunwoo hyung?” The way that Jooheon slurs his words makes him sound like a baby and when he hears him adding on hyung to his name, it stirs something deep in his gut.

Fuck, this isn’t some kind of newfound kink for him is it?

(Shit, it probably is).

Hyunwoo can’t deal with this (terrible) revelation right now, so instead he hides his face in his palms and groans, “Yeah, fine, I’ll do whatever you want.”

“Aw, thank you hyung! You’re the best!” Jooheon squeals endearingly and nuzzles his head against Hyunwoo’s turned back. The other man can only bury his face further into his palms and groan his assent. He’s never met someone like this before, someone so infuriatingly adorable and yet so purely determined to prove his own point. It says something about how much of a sucker Hyunwoo is for the other boy, because they’ve barely met and he already has him wrapped around his little finger.

Question: how does a nymph (not human), know about the complexity of honorifics in Korean speech (human)? He voices his suspicion out loud, and the nymph looks at him as if he’s missing something painfully obvious to everyone else in the world except for Hyunwoo himself.

“I’ve been here since the beginning of time, you learn a few simple things in the span of a thousand million years watching people come and go,” he retorts without pause.

The (now) older man can only mutter, “touche,” and accept his apparent defeat.

Jooheon claps his hands excitedly on Hyunwoo’s back and declares, “Alright, now that that’s taken care of, shall we eat?”

“Wait, what do garden nymphs even eat?” Hyunwoo finally turns and asks with a slowly cooling face.

Jooheon puts a finger to his lips in thought and hums lightly. “Technically, since we’re formed out of the positive light energy of the spiritual world, we’re technically always absorbing various other darker energies unconsciously at every second to continually cycle it back out into the world as positive forces. Our very bodies and spirits are made to carry out this cycle, and they are technically what keeps us going at every second, of every moment, of every day, until the end of time.

Hyunwoo looks so terribly confused, so Jooheon quickly supplies, “But I personally prefer eggs?”

Hyunwoo opens and closes his mouth a few times, before he shakes his head and accepts the fact he’ll never understand the semantics of the spirit world, which were basically nonexistent to him as of yesterday.

He gets up from the bed and heads to the kitchen, all the while questioning just what his life has become, all because one self-proclaimed garden nymph called Jooheon just happened to fall out of the sky and into his life. Quite literally in fact, since he landed very soundly on hyunwoo himself.

Said garden nymph quickly untangles himself from the blanket pile and runs after Hyunwoo to the kitchen. He peeks over his shoulder and quietly asks, “You can make simple fried eggs, right?”

Hyunwoo gulps nervously and mirrors Jooheon’s worried expression with his own. The thing is, he actually can’t cook. Like, at all. He only moved out of his previous apartment because it was too cramped, and too far away from where he worked. The new house he bought has all the benefits of giving him the space he needs and being a mere 10 minutes walk to work.

Unfortunately the one disadvantage is that he doesn’t have is his roommate, Kihyun, who, besides cooking, is basically useless otherwise. Kihyun knew that too and often withheld edible food unless he did both shares of their chores for the month as well.

Hyunwoo had done some quick math and decided the two advantages of space and distance definitely made up for the one disadvantage of actual food. However, he forgets that there’s something called a weighted average used in the real world. Which means that logically and mathematically, food should have mattered much more than the other two factors.

Now he’s fucked because 1. He doesn’t have any food in his fridge, and 2. Hyunwoo really wants to keep up a good image in front of the first person who’s shown some semblance of interest in him since his last breakup.

(Which was also thanks to Kihyun, but he swears he’s no longer bitter about that. It’s a long story, but the important part is that he definitely doesn’t hold a grudge against Kihyun for it. Not in the slightest).

Well, he guesses, now he’ll just have to learn to cook. Eggs can’t be that hard. Right? Kihyun always said they were easy, and he’s eaten enough of them in his entire lifetime that he should be able to make them based off of taste at this point.

Hyunwoo can feel confidence surge anew within him and he decides that yes, he, Son Hyunwoo, 24 years old, newly appointed studio dance teacher, crushing hard on one Lee Jooheon, can and will successfully make eggs to feed said crush, who is currently looking on with growing amusement as the man before him continues to stare into empty space with a strangely fiery look in his eyes.

Jooheon thinks his expression is absolutely adorable, and he muffles a laugh into his fist before gently poking hyunwoo’s bare shoulder to bring him out of his internal struggle, “So, eggs or not?”

Hyunwoo turns and gives him a blindingly, overconfident smile. “Definitely. But first we have to actually get the eggs.” His eyes then quickly and almost imperceptibly scan up and down over Jooheon’s figure, before he steers him by the shoulders to the bedroom with no pause or explanation.

This doesn’t go unnoticed as Jooheon starts to wiggle weakly in Hyunwoo’s grip before protesting incredulously, “What the hell, did you really just check me out!?” He immediately feels a thump on the back of his shoulders and he realizes that it’s hyunwoo hitting his head against him. Probably, out of exasperation, or something like that. He’s been told by others that he’s quite exasperating sometimes.

“I wasn’t checking you out, okay? I just realized that you’re really not wearing enough to be warm in this weather. That’s why we’re going to my closet, and you’re going to at least put on a jacket and some shoes and socks. Why are you even going around barefoot in the middle of autumn anyway? And in a threadbare t-shirt with holes no less. ”

The nymph turns and sticks his tongue out at him. “Obviously, we’re linked to nature, so we want to be able to be as close to it as possible. Feeling the earth against our bare feet is just a small part of that. Honestly, the world should be glad we don’t go around naked like our past ancestors did. Also, I thought humans liked clothing with holes in it; isn’t it supposed to be fashionable?”

Hyunwoo is not going to imagine the other man naked. He does have rather smooth skin, a perky butt, and- okay fuck he needs to stop. Stop. Back to the topic. What was it? Oh, right: properly dress Jooheon for the weather.

“Fashionable or not, normal humans wear shoes and solid clothing in cold weather. If you’re going out you need to blend in with normal society,” Hyunwoo mutters as he continues to push Jooheon to his closet door.

Jooheon turns back to look at him with big, fluttering eyes and pouted lips, and Hyunwoo weakly protests, “Hey, stop, you promised never to do that again.” The pouting face immediately breaks into an adorable smile, complete with dimples and upturned eyes, and Hyunwoo’s heart seriously can’t take anymore of this. He quickly looks away before Jooheon decides to do something else with his face and pushes open the bedroom door.

Not all of his clothes have been unpacked yet, but there should be enough out for one underdressed garden nymph to choose from. He motions to the pile of clothes and shoes hastily tossed on the ground. “Pick what you want to wear.”

Jooheon looks absolutely starstruck and shoots off a quick “thank you”, complete with a cutesy voice and dimpled smile, before rushing over to the pile. The other man can only nod mutely because he can’t trust his own voice right now not to do something like squeal or ask Jooheon to be his boyfriend-wait, ok yeah he needs to slow down. Hyunwoo needs to remind himself that they just met, and relationships are not built on hasty confessions-prime example: Romeo and Juliet. Fiction is entirely plausible in this aspect, ok?

He’s pulled out of this thoughts when Jooheon asks, “Aren’t you going to put something on too? By your human logic, that tank you’re wearing isn’t suitable for this weather either.” Hyunwoo kneels down by the pile and he pats Jooheon on the head. “What a quick learner! I’m so proud of you.” Jooheon buts against his hand with the force of an angry kitten, (which is to say none at all), but Hyunwoo easily keeps his hand on Jooheon’s (fluffy) head.

“Don’t patronize me,” he mumbles as he looks down and fidgets with a shirt. Hyunwoo rests his face on the palm of his other hand and leans down to observe, yep he was right, Jooheon’s quickly pinking cheeks. His blushing face is so innocently charming that Hyunwoo can feel his own face start to heat up as well.

“M’not,” he mumbles into his palm, as he watches the garden nymph out of the corner of his eye. Jooheon only blushes harder, and this time, he forcibly removes Hyunwoo’s hand from his head and quickly turns to face the pile of clothes instead.

“I’m still hungry, you know. We should hurry up and get dressed already,” he mutters without looking in Hyunwoo’s direction. As he focuses on sifting through the pile of clothes and shoes he finds a pair of black boots and looks at them inquisitively. Hyunwoo takes them out of his grasp and asks him skeptically, “Do you even know how to wear these?”

“No?” Jooheon hops onto the bed and swings his feet back and forth, until Hyunwoo grabs one of his bare ankles to stop him. He sits forward and leans his bent elbows on his thighs. He then sits his chin on his palms and tilts his head to make a pleading expression. “Put them on for me?”

There’s no way anyone could say no to that look, least of all Son Hyunwoo, who apparently has a newfound kink for Jooheon’s baby aegyo. He sighs in defeat and looks around for a pair of appropriate socks. In that process, he accidentally lets go of Jooheon’s feet, and they start up kicking back and forth again. Hyunwoo huffs a sigh of annoyance and quickly grabs the nearest pair of socks before pulling Jooheon’s feet down flat to rest in his lap. He wrestles the socks over wriggling toes and pulls them up to pale ankles, before shoving the boots onto them. He tries to rest Jooheon’s feet calmly against his calf as he loops the string through the boots, but the other man insists on making trouble for him by pulling them back and forth out his grasp. Hyunwoo decides to retaliate by pinching the area underneath his knee, which, by the way, was a complete mistake, because Jooheon yelps and then proceeds to kick him so hard under his chin that he literally falls backwards and smacks his head against the floor.

In Hyunwoo’s forever concussed brain, he thinks he hears a reverberating echo of someone calling his name, which doesn’t make any sense because 1. Only caves echo, 2. He’s definitely not in a cave, and 3. Caves also don’t usually echo on their own, especially not his name.

Hyunwoo is pulled out of his introspective cave thoughts when he realizes that it’s Jooheon who’s straddled above him and worriedly calling out his name. His face is unexpectedly close and Hyunwoo goes a little cross eyed at how perfect Jooheon is, even up close. When Jooheon realizes that he’s finally recovered from his concussion-inducing kick, he sighs in relief and plops himself down beside Hyunwoo, who’s still lying dumbly on the ground. He gently kicks his side with his one tied boot and tells him, “It’s your own fault, you know. I’m ticklish okay?” Even as he stubbornly scolds Hyunwoo, Jooheon proceeds to scooch over and lift Hyunwoo’s head to lay it softly onto his lap. He looks down apologetically with wavering eyes and lays a small hand gently on hyunwoo’s forehead. His lips twitch as if he wants to say something and he looks away for a moment before quietly whispering, “I’m sorry if I actually hurt you. Are you in a lot of pain?”

Hyunwoo’s head actually doesn’t hurt that much anymore, but he scrunches his face up anyway to theatrically feign pain. “I’m hurt so badly I don’t think I’ll be able to get up to go to the store anymore,” he moans dramatically into Jooheon’s thighs. (Which feel just as thick and plush as they looked in his tight jeans, so it’s definitely not weird or anything if he finds himself nuzzling into them a bit more). Jooheon immediately blushes watching the man on his lap and he quickly springs up, dislodging Hyunwoo roughly onto the floor for the second time today.

Said man on the floor quickly sits up to see the garden nymph sit down on the edge of his bed and raise a foot with an untied boot towards him. “Since you’re perfectly fine, can you help me finish putting on my shoes?” he says with a satisfied smirk. It’s so arrogant, yet so endearingly cute at the same time that Hyunwoo is compelled to obey. He scoots over and pulls the boot into his lap to quickly finish lacing it. As he finishes up the final knot, he spontaneously decides to make eye contact with Jooheon while at the same time bringing the tip of the boot to his lips in a soft, almost reverent kiss.

“Your royal highness, are you satisfied with the state of your delicate slippers?” Jooheon hums and pretends to think it over before declaring, “I suppose it’ll have to do, my lowly servant.”

He stands up abruptly and starts towards the door, but Hyunwoo manages to get his bearings back in time to quickly yank him back by the end of his (threadbare) t-shirt. Jooheon glares down at him and exclaims, “I’ve already put on your silly human shoes and socks! What else do I have to do??” When the nymph is mad, he puffs his cheeks out and pouts so adorably that Hyunwoo really just wants to reach over and squish them. However, the last time Jooheon got angry it had resulted in him fainting and Hyunwoo ending up with an overgrown garden. Right. Maybe poking the metaphoric bear (because Jooheon is more like a rabbit or chipmunk to be honest) isn’t the best idea based on a past experience.

Before the smaller man can fuck his garden up again somehow, hyunwoo quickly grabs the nearest jacket on the floor and stands up to drape it over Jooheon’s shoulders. For one short moment he feels accomplished in finally being able to dress the stubborn nymph, before he looks down and regrets with every fiber of his heart his previous action. Jooheon is practically swimming in Hyunwoo’s old, red bomber jacket and he wants to immediately rip that jacket off of him and burn it in bonfire so that his heart will never have to suffer like this again. But, then again, he also kind of, just a little, wants to gather him in his arms and cuddle him away from the dark, cold world that definitely doesn’t deserve to see just how precious Jooheon looks right now.

The nymph only makes it even worse when he actually puts his arms through the jacket and the sleeves slip over his hands, showing only the tips of his fingers. The whole thing balloons so widely over his arms and stomach that hyunwoo would laugh at him if wasn’t so terribly conflicted right now. Of course the other man remains painfully oblivious as he zips up the coat and nuzzles cutely into its high collar. Hyunwoo finally manages to tear his eyes away from innocent trap before him by reminding himself that this whole mess of a situation was made for the purpose of going out to get food. He quickly pulls on hoodie and slips on a pair of sneakers before heading for the door. When he looks back, Jooheon still seems to be fully immersed in his oversized jacket so he grabs his elbow and leads him toward the door. Unexpectedly, he feels a hand wrap around his arm and he can hear the clunk of boots following him in docile agreement. Even as they step outside the house and Hyunwoo has to rustle around in his pockets to find his keys to lock the door, Jooheon stays quietly attached to his arm with no change in position at all. The older man becomes worried as the usually boisterous nymph only continues to wordlessly clutch at his arm when they step onto the street. A car rumbles past them and the hands around his arm tighten so suddenly that hyunwoo stumbles back a bit. Hyunwoo has never been the brightest kid on the block, but combined with Jooheon’s silence and now his almost-strangling grip, he’s knows for sure that something must be wrong.

He gently pries the death-like grip off of his arm and turns to face the other man, at the same time angling himself so that he can shield him from the busy street. The nymph has half of his face nuzzled into the collar of Hyunwoo’s jacket, but his eyes dart nervously toward the ground, and his hands fidget as if looking for something to hold onto. Hyunwoo quickly grabs them to try and calm him down and he realizes that they’re shaking.

Oh no, Jooheon isn’t going to cry, right?

Hyunwoo is actually the worst at comforting people. At best he’s been called a robot; at worst he’s been called an emotionless asshole (cough cough Kihyun). He can feel his panic level rising significantly because he hasn’t been faced with a crying person for a long time, much less a crying garden nymph. Jooheon only trembles harder and Hyunwoo thinks he can see a watery sheen form over brown eyes, so he does the only thing his racing brain can think of right now.

He pulls him in for a massive, all-encompassing bear hug.

Jooheon’s hands are trapped tightly between their bodies and he can feel them shift against him before clenching down on his hoodie. His head comes at the perfect height for Hyunwoo to rest his chin on, and so he follows the logical route and places his chin directly on the fluffy head below him. A squawk of indignation emits from the nymph, but Hyunwoo only tightens his arms in reaction. Jooheon struggles weakly against his chest for a few seconds before giving up and burying his face into the elder’s shoulder.

So here’s the story, about a year ago me and my dad were hunting for a vehicle to race in the annual shitbox ice race we had been participating in for the past few years. For about 12 months I had been keeping a very close eye on the car ads in my province searching for a shitbox we could dominate with on the frozen lake when I see a dusty red automatic miata for purchase for about $1500. It had a hard top, a big ol’ dent in the fender, and an absolutely banging stereo. It was perfect. In about a weeks time we were at the guys apartment picking up the little red turd for $1200 cad. When we drove it home that night we started to learn about the “charms” this vehicle had to offer. For starters the headlights absolutely bit, I had my head out the window guiding my dad through the construction that littered the streets back to our house. This was an easy task because there was absolutely no passenger window. No passenger window in the wintertime meant it was colder than a witches tit on the drive back. We also discovered that the previous owner had emptied an entire box of “Mr.Noodles” into the vehicle and it was getting ground to a fine snortable powder under my buttocks as I sat in the passenger seat. We somehow managed to make it home without causing any major accidents and we began the task of preparing the car for the jankiest racing event ever invented. For the next couple weeks I would spend my weekends trying to scrub all the hepatitis and layers of crust out of the miata. At some point we figured it needed googly eyes and a boso style straightpipe exhaust with supertrapp disks on the end. The exhaust was basically made up of 20 different sized pieces of piping that were laying around the shop but it seemed to do the job of making it the most obnoxiously loud car you will ever see. We slapped some studded tires on it and basically decided it was ready for 4+ hours of absolute ice racing abuse. The night before the test day at the frozen lake it snowed about a foot which eliminated any chance of us actually driving the car to the track so we ended up strapping it to a trailer and towing it there instead. When we arrived at the track we unloaded the turd and off-roaded it down to the lake track (which was still being “carved” at the time). We cranked up the Alice cooper on the stereo and we started to haul major ass. Now the car actually did something that surprised us both, it was very very very good on the ice. Not once in a million years would we ever consider a miata to be a world class vehicle on a ice track. However we couldn’t really say the same about snow banks because the whole front end of the vehicle pretty much siezed up when it got snow packed into it. After we did some spirited crashing and a handful of laps and we much called it a day and parked the miata back near our trailer. The following day we would return to see the fleet of cars brought by our competitors. The most notable ones being a rainbow ball of metal which you almost couldn’t believe was running (or was even a car at some point for that matter) and a caged dodge omni. Now that I think of it there was even a lancer participating at some point. The MX-5HIT would really have some stiff competition. The drivers gather around to discuss the rules. The rules were simple. 1. You must be able to reach the beer cooler in the back seat. 2. When someone bins it into the snow barrier outlining the track we would all come to a stop to pull him out (this ended up keeping the racing extremely close for multiple hours). 3. On the final laps it would be “prison rules” where anything goes and nobody would be rescued. 4. Pee breaks would be held periodically and we would stop to eat food somewhere in the middle of the race. Personally I think this ruleset is flawless and every form of Motorsport should adopt them. Anyways, all the road hazards line up to the start line and take off in a plume of impending mechanical disaster. Immediately the MX-5HIT squeezes its way to the front of the pack behind some caged neons. The sheer racket this straightpiped turd was making was an absolute spectacle. We roared down the straightaway at over 120kmh with no foresight to how we would eventually slow down, but it didn’t matter, this car was starting to show its true colours as an ice racing beast. At the halfway mark in the race a handful of cars had already been “eliminated”. Remember that rainbow ball of metal I referenced? I guess it turned out to be a corolla (or what was left of one). The driver hit the snow bank so hard that it send snow about 70 feet in the air. The impact caused the transmission to completely empty itself of any sort of fluids. I also believe the lancer retired early as well due to similar mechanical issues (as the car mysteriously vanished part way through the race). Honestly if I was a betting man I wouldn’t be counting on the miata making it either. At that point it had been at around 6000rpm steady for about 2 hours yet it still showed no signs of wanting to through the towel in. After a short break we resumed the antics of thrashing some junkyard rejects around the frozen lake for another mildly uneventful couple hours. A flag was waved and we returned to the start/finish line to prepare for the final prison rule laps. The race starts and once again the miata stutters its way back into the lead (I forgot to mention this entire time the car had a catastrophic misfiring issue either due to a bad AFM or coil pack so it was basically running on 3 until it reached over 4K rpm so we had to keep the revs high for the whole race). Halfway through the prison laps we almost got sandwhich between 75% of a Ford Explorer and an ice barrier but the small miata slipped through like a wet bar of soap. Coming on the last laps we had essentially secured podium somehow. The outcast miata had beaten the odds. Not only was it a compatible ice racing vehicle but it also held together at 6k rpm for the better part of a 4-5 hour endurance race with absolutely zero problems. We cross the finish line sideways blaring eurobeat as loud as it would go and then we pull into the pits where we get to assess what the racing ended up doing to the car. As we peel ourselves off the hot seats we notice that the 30 year old seat fabric is steaming. All the hepatitis I had convinced myself that was absorbed within the dirty seat fabric had now gone airborne. Other than that the car seemed absolutely flawless, the only difficulty we ended up having is cleaning up the snow in the engine bay because the bottom is completely sealed off which meant snow could just fill the engine bay completely. We also found out that the hot engine had basically turned the snow into an ice cocoon for the bottom half of the engine. Other than that the persistent MX-5HIT had saved itself from an impending future of being crushed at the local scrap yard.

After the race the MX-5HIT pretty much sat dormant in a shed rotting away for 8 months until I decided to try to “repair” the mangled soft top roof. Now I would like to say some words of advice, never never never never ever ever ever ever think you can repair a miata soft top. It’s absolute hell. From the disassembly to the re assembly it’s an absolute pain in the ass. I somehow managed to get a completely new top fitted and the old one removed in a total of about 2 days. With my new soft top fitted I try to latch the roof onto the car to make sure everything fits right when i hear a ripping sound. I glance over to the drivers side of the vehicle to see a 7.5 inch tear along the edge of my brand new soft top. Honestly if I wasn’t such a calm individual I have no doubt I would have probably thrown whatever I was holding right through the side of the car. After that the car just sat around for another month until I decided to fix the misfiring problem. A coil pack was ordered and I made it my goal to instal it in the least botch way possible. I fired the car up and it still ran like shit (I guess it’s called the MX-5HIT for a reason right?) so I do some very very brief online browsing and somehow my brain came to a conclusion that I need to “clean the MAF”. Now there are a few problems with that. The first being that my particular miata never came with a MAF, it came with a AFM. The second of the problems was that I didn’t bother taking the time to look up what a miata MAF actually looked like. So me being stupid I decide to unscrew the plug on the side of the AFM (oppose to just unplugging it) and I sprayed MAF cleaner inside. Little did I know that when you unscrew the side of the AFM instead of unplugging it and pull on the cable, it’s the equivalent to when a bee stings something and the stinger rips its guts out making it die. had killed my miata. The car wouldn’t start or anything. My brain slowly puts the puzzle pieces together and I realize that I am a fool. When my dad discovered that the eye sore of a car would be a semi permenant decoration in his shop until another AFM was ordered he said that he wanted to strangle me Homer Simpson style. We managed to saw the top of the AFM off and do some open heart surgery to all the connectors I had obliterated. The car now ran and I saved myself from getting an ass whooping of the century.

Somehow I had convinced myself that it would be a smart idea to bring the hurt car home and use it as a daily driver. Boy was I a big dummy. The first clue that something with the car was wrong was when I took it for a rip an it momentarily hesitated when I touched the throttle. I thought it was odd but thought nothing of it. A couple days later the car passes away yet again but this time in my school parking lot. Out of all the things that killed this relic it ended up being me. The open heart surgery on the AFM just didn’t hold. Andddd the miata spends yet more time sitting around. Eventually a new AFM was ordered and installed the right way (live and learn I guess right?). It was during installation I found a special pool of liquid forming within the engine bay, scratch that, two pools of liquid. The first being the master cylinder which decided that it only wanted to leak everywhere and take the paint off the car instead of Hold fluid. The second was the fluid reservoir for the windshield wipers which leaked worse than a bucket with no bottom. The car is an absolute cursed dangerous pile of shit but for some reason I couldn’t bear seeing it part with my family. I actually got curious one day and decided to do some looking into on the previous service history and accident reports on our little racecar (since the car came with absolutely zero papers saying it was ever serviced) and by golly it hadn’t been touched a Mazda employee since the day it was built in Hiroshima back in the late 80’s. It turns out it wasn’t missing service papers, it just didn’t have any. And this was the same vehicle that spent 4-5 hours in the red with all 90hp screaming at 6000rpm. I’ve convinced myself that this car deserves a second life that isn’t the junk yard. Sure it may be the rustiest slowest miata in the continent but it’s one tough bastard. And I’m not sure if I’m the only one but I had zero interest in owning a miata until I actually got the chance to drive one. Even the shittiest miata of them all still ended up being a good ass car.
