“There are three conditions to terrify someone: One, the monster can’t speak. Two, the monster has to be unidentifiable. Three, it’s meaningless if the monster can die.”

“You know, you might die too…”
Mei Ling drew in a sharp breath and cocked her head, pulling an unconvinced expression.
Call it confidence or call it cockiness. Either way she didn’t place too much concern into it. Today was one of those days where she felt particularly risky and daring. These days help balance out where paranoia and worry seeped into every crevice of her being. Even if it was under a pretense, she still felt like she could breathe easier so she didn’t mind.
“What? With you around? Nonsense.” She grabbed her bag, threw it over a shoulder, and nodded towards the abandoned ferry boat. With or without him, she planned to check it out.

*✱ he is a weapon, a killer
perhaps the place she was looking at could be called a graveyard of sorts, where the fair went to die. she had read about elephants going off to a remote place to lie and await their passing when they reach a certain age; only that place was not all that deserted -- it was a home to ivory bones and tusks of former magnificent elephants. the smell of metal was thick and heavy in the air; it settled like sedimentation in her lungs. she found him sitting all by himself by the rusty remains of a ferris wheel, its metal rods poking haphazardly out of the earth. his current doings were kept obscured, his back towards her. and it occurred to her if she was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
she shuffled her foot on a patch of grass with the sole purpose of announcing her presence so as to not alarm the man before her; she had always been told she had light steps. but she doubted he would put her in harm’s way. she knew him, and he knew her. they were part of the beta-testers back then, and she had grown quite fond of him during the short intervals they spent together. looking at him, she could already feel the familiar hum of electricity running through her veins at the thought of possessing his ability once again. he was unique, in a way, and she attributed his enigmatic, almost magnetic silence to what drew her to him the very first time.
once she was certain that he was aware of company, she scuffled past a decaying bench and what appeared to be the broken head of a horse from the merry-go-round before crouching down beside the male. her index finger rose and prodded him lightly on the arm -- a subtle act to demand attention.
