☕️ Moomin

I don't think I have many hot takes about the work itself :D Like most Finnish kids born in the 90s and 00s, I watched the 90s cartoon growing up and really liked it, my parents' house is full of Moomin mugs, and I must admit that I still have a favourite Moomin Youtube Poop at age 21... I think the Pyrstötähti cartoon movie had a big impact on me as a kid, it was one of the first movies I watched and it opened this entire new world for me with its end-of-the-world emotional stakes xD

I don't really understand the international online Moomin fandom because it feels so different in vibes to how most Finns see the Moomins, but it's always kinda fun to see surprise Moomin content on my Tumblr dash :D I also haven't watched a lot of the new stuff like the Moominvalley series - the newest thing I've seen is Muumit Rivieralla (2014).

OH, I guess I have a mild hot take - I think it was a really bad call to change the script to be more simple and modern when they redubbed the 90s anime to show it on mtv3. Learning a varied vocabulary from children's books and shows is really important for kids, and I don't think I knew what vaapukkamehu was in 2005 any more than a small kid in 2023 does. That's why you watch the show and either learn what the unfamiliar word means from context clues or ask your parents XD (I was actually kinda shocked in high school when a lot of people in my Finnish class didn't know what porstua was when it appeared in the required reading book.) So yeah, bad MTV3 for contributing to declining levels of reading comprehension in The Youth!!

fun fact, I was on the Riviera yesterday. No I did not get a hotel, I’m staying at a campsite. But I did enjoy myself! I went crabbing and looked at the shops. It’s a cool place for crabbing and learning about Agatha Christie, but they didn’t have anything about her that day, that’s all in September

Films in 2016 #5 Muumit Rivieralla, 2014. Directed by Xavier Picard & Hanna Hemilä ★★★★★ - - - - -

Moomins is some of my favorite childhood tv, that holds up for grown-ups. The author, Tove Jansson, has written beautiful books that are on my personal wish list. I was pretty dissapointed by this movie though, since it only catered to children and didn’t have the extra deeper, thoughtful layers as it did in the past. As I was watching, I wished it would’ve just been a silent movie, so I could enjoy the cutesy, detailed animation instead of listening to a dialogue meant for 4 year olds.

Watch or read some old school Moomins instead :)
