Sweet secret | Tom Felton one shot
Request: yes. @anonymous
Word count: 2,710 words
Pairing: Tom Felton x reader
Note: This one was requested a while ago, I just had troubles writing it. But I really hope you guys like it! Don’t forget that my requests are still open and there’s a prompt list waiting for y’all to check it out. Also, let me know if you’d like to be added to my tag list! Take care babes xx
Being the only child of a rockstar had its own benefits. For example, it was a lot more easier for Y/N to meet her favourite celebrities and make connections with influential people from all type of industries. Having a world wide famous rockstar as a dad meant that she spent most of her time in the limelight, always travelling with him and being his biggest fan from the day she was born. By the age of sixteen, she had already travelled the whole world and successfully used her name to speak up about social issues and help different charities and organisations. She had never stopped talking about the importance of acceptance, equality, support and love. She lived her life like that. She didn’t care who you were, where you came from, as long as you didn’t hurt the ones she loved, she loved you and supported you. That was what she saw from her parents, and she was proud of her family being one of those celebrity families who never let fame get in their heads and go crazy over their net worth. They lived a humble life, and shared their love with the world.
But of course that lifestyle came with the content rumours and paparazzi chasing after them in the street. They tried to capture an awkward moment that could be laughed at, a bad hair day that could be the reason to judge, but what they wanted most, is to capture her with someone from the opposite sex. She always kept her love life private, hardly sharing any information about who she was seeing or who she was in a relationship with. She was happy that they could keep their relationship a sweet little secret for almost six months, and enjoy the privacy and intimacy of their bubble. It was until one day a fan of Tom successfully took a picture of them, being in the same car, driving around Los Angeles.
She met Tom through a mutual friend, who was aware of their silly little platonic crush on each other and knowing Y/N and Tom, she thought they could be a power couple. So when she learnt that both of them were going in to in LA for weeks, she didn’t hesitate to throw a summer party in her beach house and invite both of them. She kept it as a secret, didn’t want them to think they are being forced into something that they didn’t want in the first place. Y/BSF/N knew Y/N just recently got out of a terrible relationship and she was a little bit afraid to start something knew, fearing that the new guy would be the same as the previous one. And she knew that Tom, no matter how many times he said and acted like he wasn’t, was lonely and wanted to finally find someone who he could share his life with. She knew she had nothing to worry about, because the second they were introduced, they just immediately hit it off and spent the whole afternoon and night by each other’s side, talking about movies, music, travel, dreams and goals, and when the cocktails finally kicked in, they weren’t shy to shamelessly flirt with each other. Tom was confident about their mutual sympathy and felt something that he hadn’t felt in a very long time, and two days later, he asked her out of their first official date. He was a real gentleman. He picked Y/N up at her flat, brought a huge bouquet of white roses to her and treated her like a queen the whole night. He arranged a candlelight picnic dinner on the beach, far from the popular parts, so nobody could ruin their first date. They fed each other with fruits and cuddled while they watched the stars. It was nothing crazy, nothing fancy and extravagant. Money wasn’t in focus, but they were. That night was all about them. And when the night eventually had to end, Tom walked her to the door and sweetly kissed Y/N. Ever since then, the couple couldn’t imagine their days without at least FaceTiming each other. They were happy and crazily in love, of course they wanted to keep that a secret as long as they could , not wanting the media to ruin in for them. But life didn’t work like that. Paparazzi had no mercy and they were paid to take preferably the highest quality pictures of the top celebs and their close family. And social media users wanted something they could talk about, because that was the main priority for most people nowadays. Stalking the subject of their obsession and use the protection of anonymity of social media to hate and judge other people.
“Have you seen the pictures?” Y/N asked Tom when she finally found him chilling by the pool in his backyard. It was a rather hot day in LA, and he had a few days break from shooting his next movie, he wanted to get the best out of his little break and spend every single minute with his lady “My dad just sent me them” she gave her phone to Tom, so he could check out the short article with the attached photos. It was from a few days ago, when they went to grocery shopping together. They were just leaving the parking lot, and it was visible that Tom was holding up their interwind hands to his lips to kiss on her knuckles. Another picture of them showed how Tom opened the car door for Y/N, and as she was getting in the vehicle, he playfully patted her butt. He quickly clicked on the link to see the full article. It was really short, probably because the journalist didn’t have any solid evidence or information about their romance.
“What can I say? I just love your ass” Tom handed back her phone and chuckled at her expression “Darling, stop worrying. A fan sent those pictures to TMZ, so what? They have no evidence that we’re dating” he put his hand of her calf and looked up at her girlfriend. He knew they couldn’t keep their relationship a secret forever. No matter how much Tom liked the excitement of sneaking around and having privacy, he wanted to show the world how beautiful, amazing and perfect his girlfriend was “This shall too pass, just like any other rumour that is left without a word.”
“Alright” Y/N sighed and decided to ignore the article, the photos, the comments and the mentions. Tom was right. This whole thing will be long forgotten in a couple of days, if neither of them say anything about it. In that case, the media couldn’t blow it up “I just hate the media and the drama it causes every time”
“I know” he smiled at her sweetly, not liking the frown on her face from annoyance and worry “So will you finally join me in the pool or do I have to throw you in it again?” Y/N laughed and put her phone down on the deck chair. She winked at Tom and take of the think summer dress she was wearing to reveal Tom’s favourite swimsuit, a white one-piece with a deep V-cut. He whistled at her as she was walking down the few steps of the pool and swam up to him “You just made this already hot day way hotter, baby” he pulled her close, kissing her passionately and making her forget all about that article.
2 months later -
Having a boyfriend who was constantly traveling and filming wasn’t making a relationship smooth, and if you add a girlfriend who was working on her own career just as hard, then you could easily how Tom and Y/N’s relationship was. But they knew what they wanted and they did everything to make it work, even if they were in two different parts of the country. They called each other every time they had the chance, made sure to send a supporting message to the other, letting them know they were proud of their achievements in life, and of course memes. Tom was a huge fan of memes, and he liked to spam Y/N with them, especially with the Harry Potter ones. Y/N lived for the smile on Tom’s face and she knew how much he loved surprises, so when she could finally take a week off from work, her first thing was to book a flight to the city Tom was currently at. The smile on his face and how excited and happy he was when he saw his girlfriend after almost two months of only being able to see her through his phone was worth anything to Y/N.
“I missed you so much, baby” Tom said in between kisses, not letting go of the laughing girl in his arms “I was getting rather lonely without you” his was got an octave deeper and the familiar flame of lust and love appeared in his ocean blue eyes. Slowly, his lips made their way down to her neck from her lips, kissing along her jawline, holding her closer than ever.
“Mhm, as much as I want this” Y/N pulled away and looked up at Tom, who was pouting like a little boy who’s favourite toy was taken away. It was party true, one of his new favourite things to do was kissing Y/N whenever he had the chance “You have to go live in a less than 5 minutes. You promised a Harry Potter watch party to your babies, and I don’t want you to disappoint them” she kissed his nose and forced his arms off of her waist. Tom knew he couldn’t disappoint them, and he didn’t want to, but he still groaned as he went to make sure everything was okay with the internet connection and the light ring. Y/N watched how Tom settled with his guitar and a cup of tea, already smiling that she could watch her boyfriend interacting with his fans.
“I’ll just sing a little in the meantime” Tom said to Y/N, who was packing out of her suitcase, and changing into one of Tom’s Teddy Fresh hoodies. They were the most comfortable hoodies she had ever worn, and it was just a pleasing addition that they always smelled like Tom. She kept on packing and tidying up the mess Tom usually leaves in his room in the morning, and listened to his smoothing voice. She always loved when Tom was singing. I didn’t matter if it was a song from another artist, one that he wrote or just an improvised nonsense about something that caught his attention in that very second. She loved to see him happy, and singing made him happy.
Tom finally started his Instagram live and was singing one of his old songs. One that was very dear to both of them, because he sang that song on their one month anniversary and  told her he was in love with her.
“I was in the right place, at the right time, that day we spent together” Tom kept looking at her behind his phone, his smile getting bigger when she blew him a kiss “There’s no where else I’d have put myself, or to share the day with anyone else” he finished the song and greeted his fans who were already sending hundreds of heart emojis and cute little love confession to him in the comment section. Y/N layed down on the bed, with her phone in her hands and read the comments, screenshooting a few cute ones to save them for later.
“Alright my little wizards and witches” Tom said “Shall we continue our magical journey to the one and only Hogwarts?” His voice was filled with excitement, he hadn’t seen any of the movies in so long, he really wanted to share this experience with those people who had such a huge impact in his career as an actor. Little did they know, the fans saw the secret glances and how Tom blushed at the sigh of his girlfriend taking off his hoodie, staying in only her shorts and a tank top. Even after all these months, he still thought of her as a goddess. The fans had been suspecting that Tom had someone special in his life. They caught on his glow, and how his smile became brighter. He always sang love songs during his lives and left little Easter eggs in his Instagram stories, or in his captions. They were happy to see him being in love, they were only waiting to finally be able to see who was the reason of Tom’s behaviour.
“Questions time!” He announce after the 11 minutes of the movie ended. He grabbed his guitar again and started playing spontaneously on the strings, creating a beautiful melody. It was the moment, when Y/N realised her phone was on 5%, and her charger was somewhere behind Tom. She knew it would have been suspicious, if he just grabbed it and handed it her, so she decided to go and grab it herself. From where she was laying, it looked like her charges was out of the frame, and nobody would see her. She tiptoed to the charger and made sure not to bump into anything that could alert the fans. It was their time with Tom, and she didn’t want to interrupt their little date.
“God, you’re so beautiful” Tom blurted out when he saw her behind him, grabbing her charger from the coffee table. As soon as the words left his mouth, they both froze. Y/N realised she was in the frame, being very much visible. She looked at her boyfriend with a socked expression, not being sure what to do next. Stay or go? Say something or stay silent? Wave or smile? As for Tom, he didn’t mind that she accidentally walked into the live. He wanted to tell the world for a while now about their relationship. He was tired of not being able to share his happiness with his fans and hiding their love. It was nothing wrong about it. Love, in any kind of form, should have been celebrated in a daily basis. And that was what he wanted.
“I guess it’s time to finally introduce you to my other family, baby” Tom put down his guitar and reached out to her hand, pulling her completely in the frame. He sat her on his lap and hugged her by the waist “Ladies and gentlemen, please, welcome the woman who has being making me the happiest man alive in the last six and a half months” he looked at her the way every girl wants to be looked at. If anyone would have question the love they had, they only had to watch how they were looking at each other. Love, adoration, passion and devotion. It was all in one single look “Sorry for keeping this a  sweet little secret for so long, but I just wanted to have her for myself as long as I could” he chuckled and kissed the blushing cheek of his girlfriend. Y/N was still in a little bit of shock. This definitely wasn’t the way she wanted to announce their romance to the world, but she was revealed deep down. She could finally show her love and support freely.
“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure Tom has many dates with you guys on Instagram” winked to the camera and refused to look at the comments. She was floating in happiness, she didn’t want the haters to ruin it for her.
“I’m so damn lucky” Tom whispered and grabbed her face to give her a quick but sweet kiss on the lips. Nobody could stop him from posting about his girlfriend and what they had. He was finally able to show off, and make sure everyone saw her as she was. Not Tom Felton’s girlfriend, not the daughter of Y/F/N, but as Y/N Y/L/N. He was proud to have you, and planned to keep it that way till the rest of his life.

So here is all that has happened and all that I know and all of my thoughts on this intra-ship-tag war. For anyone who cares to read.
I hadn't written a new fic in a while. Not since Season 8 was airing, so I was not really aware of what was going on until one fic in particular where Jon has an abusive past, started getting negative attention. Most people will know which fic I’m talking about (for the purposes of this post, I’ll refer to it as FIC1).
I had come across the fic randomly and skimmed it, deciding it seemed interesting and I would read it fully when I had the chance. Then I saw the hate the fic was getting and I read it fully immediately. I thought the fic was incredibly well written and wasn’t in any way a Jon-hate fic. Some parts of the fic I even was a tiny bit uncomfortable for the way it portrayed Dany, but I was too interested to let those parts get to me and I have since kept up with it and plan to read it until it’s conclusion.
When I saw the hate on FIC1, I posted about it. How I thought the fic didn’t deserve the hate it was getting and how I thought people were casting judgement without really reading it, just commenting based on what they had heard about it and the author.
This got me some hate but I stood by my fellow author.
This was when I first heard of the “Discord” group.
Everything I knew about the discord was hearsay as I am not and have never been involved in it. I heard the discord was all men who stanned Jon Snow and hate-commented on any fic they didn't like and had been policing the tag since basically the S8 finale. As I had seen hate comments on fics with my own eyes, I had no reason to question this.
Especially when fics began showing up in the tag of Dany getting raped in response to each time FIC1 would update. Comments on those fics were sarcastic and crude and supportive. I have never used A03 as a social media platform so I was not and still am not very familiar with usernames.
More accusations flew around that those responsible for these fics and fics that plagairised FIC1 stemmed from the Discord. I had no reason to believe otherwise (but I also had no reason to believe it was all Discord people either which I should not have so readily believed).
More fics were posted by authors I read and respect and more hate was flung around. Again, the Discord was blamed, perhaps* wrongly. My prejudice against this supposed discord group grew.
Then I started writing “Queens Always Have the Last Word” (QAHTLW). At first, the response was positive - everyone seemingly hates Sansa. A few complained I wasn’t changing Jon’s general S8 demeanor which annoyed me. I had made it perfectly clear in the tags that the story would focus on Dany - and I had already written a fic for Jon where he was the star and got the last word. This was her turn.
I did not and still do not consider it a Jon-hate fic or that the fic is an attack on Jon’s character in any way. I kept Jon essentially close to his S8 self but added a bit more to him - additions I thought were positive.
But my fic was somehow labeled “Jon Snow hate.”
Some people in comments on my and other fics have said something about S8 fics being “serious” fics, hence why I guess my QAHTLW was labeled “Jon hate.”
For one, this to me this seemed an incredibly arbitrary rule and it still seems incredibly arbitrary. That S8 fics HAVE to be “serious”. Why is it just S8 fics?
For those wondering, my understanding of a “serious” fic is a fic that HAS to feature Jon and Dany as being 100% equal to each other and the narrative HAS to treat them as 100% equal and be kind to both of them.
If a fic is not considered “serious”, it is okay for Jon and Dany to not be 100% equal or treated equal by the narrative - one example of “non-serious” fics in the Jonerys A03 tag were harem fics.
At least, that’s what I’ve been told by commenters - harem fics are okay to be in the Jonerys tag on A03 (even though they are incredibly unequal in regards of who gets to sleep with who) because apparently “no one takes them seriously.”
This is what I have been told: “No one takes harem fics seriously.”
So, because of this new standard set forth by people who either had been policing the tag, or people trying to explain the motives behind people policing the tag, a line became drawn.
Those of us who don’t write or read harem fics, we (I, rather, but others likely as well) began to see this line as “Jon Snow stans” and “Daenerys stans”. Because it’s highly unlikely many Dany fans would want to read fics where Jon just gets to smash everyone in ASOIAF.
So then I had a pretty damning encounter with someone in the comments of Chapter 4 of QAHTLW. The hate started off right out the gate:
Tumblr media
This comment was a lot of things at once. 1) It cemented for me this weird divide between “Tumblr” (“Tumblrinas” as some call us) writers and “others” (I assumed all the “others” were Discord users). 2) It cemented for me that all the “others” were exclusively Jon fans, due to the accusation here that I don’t care about Jon, and 3) it was the first time I had been told to literally stop writing and leave to community.
I reacted immediately. The encounter was petty (yes, I was petty too, fully admit it) and went on for several comments. Then my hate commenter responded with this:
Tumblr media
I had seen that “reeeeeeee” before. Just a day before actually, here on Tumblr. It wasn't a post of mine, but a response to one of my mutual’s posts. The person who reblogged with the “reeeeeeeee” comment left a nasty note about Dany going crazy - it was clearly a comment meant to be offensive to Dany stans. I reblogged said post and blocked the user who had made the “reeeeee” comment.
So because my hate commenter on A03 used the same language as the Tumblr reblogger, I called him out on it, thinking I knew who he was. We went back and forth on that for another round of comments, and then he sent me this:
Tumblr media
1) The user claims he is not the same person from Tumblr, 2) he admits to being in the “Discord” group, 3) He admits the Tumblr user I had blocked posts things from Tumblr to share with the Discord group for the purposes of making fun of us, and 4) he admits to using a “throwaway” account on A03 in order to avoid being banned by the site, should his comments get reported.
Because of this encounter, I felt I had enough information to pass blanket judgement on the Discord group. To me, because of this person’s comments, the Discord was a place where male Jon Snow fans hung out and talked shit about Dany stans from Tumblr.
And because this person had said things from Tumblr were shared (and laughed at) on the Discord, and because the very next day I posted a link on my Tumblr to QAHTLW, I felt I had made a connection.
To me, it seemed like this hate comment stemmed from the Discord and was encouraged because of my reblogging of the Tumblr post.
These comments on my fic felt like retaliation for something that had happened on Tumblr.
It felt calculated. It felt systematic. It felt purposeful. It felt really fucking creepy.
I reported it to A03.
A little while after the encounter, I got a final comment from this person. He had deleted his “throwaway” account and whatever other account he had been using, leaving me this on anon:
Tumblr media
While I did think him a jerk for all the things he had said, I can respect this. Thank you whoever you are for realizing you were being a bully. My comments to you were rude as well, I know.
But he admitted his fault in instigating the argument and said he would stop. So, I can only say, respect.
Still, though one person had left this “tag policing” behind, it had opened a can of worms. Again, he had admitted to the discord sharing and laughing at shit from Tumblr. And so far as I knew, he only found my fic because of the Discord (may or may not be true, but that’s how it came across to me at the time).
My view of the Discord was lowered further.
Then, another "problematic” Jonerys fic was posted. We’ll call this FIC2.
I didn’t think anything of it, honestly. I really, seriously didn’t.
It was by an author I love to death so naturally, anything she writes, I excitedly reblog. Which I did. I didn't do so with any kind of snide remark, I wasn’t thinking about the fic’s treatment of Jon (because I didn’t think the fic would treat Jon badly...and it didn’t), I didn’t think about the other characters this fic involved. Nothing.
I was seriously just fucking reblogging a fic from a friend, and then of course left a generic “loved it, this was hot!” comment on the fic on A03.
And I got hate for that. Surprise Surprise:
Tumblr media
This is two comments from, I’m assuming, two different users. Both were on anon. Once again, we were called “Tumblrinas”.
But a new level to this creepiness was added.
Someone started using my name on A03 as their anon name.
(The above comment thread has since been deleted but I screenshot it before the delete because I wanted to report to A03 - using someone else’s name and/or misrepresenting another user is very much in violation of A03s Terms of Service).
So that was the first fic this happened on but this person from FIC2 has since been going on all kinds of Jonerys fics on A03 leaving more comments, calling himself “LAStoryWriterAlex’s Rules and Regulations Enforcer.”
This was on another “problematic” fic (I won’t call it Jon hate because FFS it’s NOT Jon hate!):
Tumblr media
Along with leaving a sarcastic remark about how I and my “crew of miscreants” apparently have now made a rule that “you can only leave praise in comments”, this person also called the fic he was commenting on “garbage”. So, rude.
Then he left this on a RAPE fic:
Tumblr media
He did not call the RAPE fic “garbage” and even used “please” and “thank you”.
Because this all seemed to stem from my reblog of FIC2 on Tumblr, I again assumed that this person, my “rules and regulations enforcer,” was from the Discord and had only seen my reblog of FIC2 because someone had snapshotted it and shown it to the Discord.
I admit, it was wrong of me to assume this. I have no way of knowing if this person is from the Discord or not. But because of my last encounter, and as this was another thing that seemed to start from Tumblr, this is what I assumed.
Then I posted my Dandry fic, Retrograde.
You all know what happened with that.
In all honesty, I didn't write this to “piss off the incels”. (I also apologize for calling the entire Discord incels. I now know a few of you and realize this was a mistake). I wrote this fic because the idea came to me, it excited me, and once I started writing, I couldn’t stop. I was having fun with it. I’ve never shipped Dany/Gendry before, but since 8x04, this fic was always an idea in the back of my mind and I himhawed with writing it, mostly because I was busy with other things, but I worked on it. And when I got the first chapter done I posted.
And all hell broke loose.
At first I had anon commenting enabled, but then disabled it because I just couldn’t fucking take it. It was exhausting.
I got kind comments, I got neutral comments, I got rude comments, I got people arguing with each other in the comments, and then I got just fucked up comments -
Comments about me, my family, my weight:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In short, my parents should have aborted me brutally, my mother is a dirty whore, I’m cancer (not the zodiac sign I’m guessing), and I’m allegedly fat.
I admit, the fat one got to me. I’m not fat, never have been overweight. But I do occasionally obsess about my weight, so that one got a reaction from me and I know, I know it shouldn’t have. But I made note anyway, of the fact that all my profiles are linked and there are pics of me in existence online that prove I’m not fat - I wanted to prove I’m not fat. My vanity got the better of me and so invited people to find pictures of me. Which had certain consequences I’ll discuss in a moment.
I also got fucked up comments about Gendry and Dany - Dany in that apparently she’s a whore, and Gendry because he’s an uneducated bastard. Which, way to go elitist scum. I really don’t feel bad about saying that. These comments are elitist and misogynistic. Really makes me wonder what people would think of Jon if the show hadn’t made him legitimate. Would they all still stan him then? Do they only like him because he was heir to the throne??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, that as just the first two pages! (There were more supportive comments than not - I think) but there are now 8 pages of comments. So you can only guess what the rest of those 8 pages contain.
I got all kinds of anons on Tumblr because of this. Some who supported my fic - thank you - and others who spewed the same kind of drivel from A03. I’m a whore, cunt, dumb bitch, awful writer, etc.
Then, because I had exposed myself and made note of all my profiles being linked (which I had initially done so friendly A03 people could find my Tumblr if they didn’t already connect the two), I started getting anons commenting on, of all things, my fucking forehead, which apparently is larger than normal? Whatever, fuck you, I think I’m adorable, so there.
I got an anon recently talking about the connection myself and others had made between the Discord and the revenge rape fics.
I agreed with anon in my response, that it was wrong for me to blame the Discord for fics like the beastiality fic in the tag. I pointed out however, that people were not attacking that writer the way they’ve been attacking me and others.
Again, it was wrong of me to assume all people in the Discord were leaving the hate comments. I admit that and I apologize for it.
But I have proof (above) that at least one of the people policing the tag was from the Discord. And I have since had reason to believe some in the Discord still police the tag and do so quite hatefully.
I was thinking about this most recent anon a lot since I got it and answered it. And then today when I was cursing the tag...
I came across one of the Modern Targcest fics.
And I saw red.
I clicked on the A03 “Collection” and skimmed through. Many of the fics were ones I had already seen/skimmed or read. But looking at the collection as a whole, I got an impression of the tag.
And yes, I admit, my impression did not apply to all fics. And even the fics it did apply to, I should have never called out.
I wanted to make a point, and I went about it the wrong way.
The point I had wanted to make was that all the people policing the tag were hypocrites because these DubCon fics (some are less consensual than others) had relatively low engagement compared to my fic which was 100% consensual.
This still is something that bothers me, honestly, though it is through no fault of the authors of these DubCon fics.
I just really hate that those fics are left relatively in peace and a fic like mine is not. Do I want those fics to get more hate? No. I just want the hate on mine and others like it to stop.
But I did go about it the wrong way.
Certain people felt I misrepresented certain fics when I made THIS post. I roped all the fics into one category, and made an assumption about them all and that was wrong.
Also, some people thought by making this post, I was saying that these authors “like” rape or are real life rape apologists, which was not my intention either.
I still believe some of these fics are on a rape-spectrum. I’m sorry, that’s just what DubCon is. Not all of these DubCon fics are rapey, but some of them are.
And it’s fine if that’s what you want to write and read. Really, it is. As I’ve stated, fanfic is a SAFE place for people to explore taboos, like rape and incest. Just because we read and write about it, doesn’t mean we would ever do it in real life. In fic, it’s fine though.
And I apologize if my post came off as kink-shaming. Not my intention.
Again, my intention was merely to point out the discrepancy in reaction to these fics because to me, a DubCon fic is more problematic than a cheating fic. My opinion. You may not share my opinion.
Really my intention here was for people to realize that, if you can turn a blind eye to DubCon (something I find pretty problematic), then you should also be able to spare the same courtesy to other fics, like cheating, cuck, or “Jon Snow hate fics” - (and it’s always someone’s opinion whether or not the fic is truly Jon Snow hate).
If Dany fans can make it through the tag without commenting on some of the more extreme DubCon fics, and through the Harem fics, then Jon Snow fans should be able to make it through the tag without commenting on the cheating and the cuck fics. (and if Jon Snow fans can pass the harem fics and not think anything of them and not hate comment, they should be able to pass by the cuck fics too!!) - cuz I don’t want people to assume I’m accusing all Jon fans of liking those harem fics. Probably many of you don’t. But if you’ve left hate on a cuck fic, but not a harem fic, that’s hypocritical. It really is.
If you’ve policed the tag and harassed an author for “punishing” Jon in their fic telling the author that they’re not really a Jon fan or not really a Jonerys fan, but you haven’t done the same in a harem (or similar) fic and stuck up for say, Dany, claiming the author isn’t a real Dany/Jonerys fan, you’re a hypocrite.
Because as I’ve pointed out, Jon and Dany aren’t at all treated the same or equal in those kinds of fics.
This isn't to say those fics are wrong, or shouldn’t be written, or don’t belong in the tag. It’s just to say if you give them a pass, you must also give a pass to everyone else.
You can’t just pick and choose which “unequal” Jonerys fics are allowed and which aren’t.
Which S8 fix-it-fics are allowed and which aren’t.
Which fics are “serious” and which are “non-serious”. (Many of the harem/breeding fics have Jon/Dany as the main pairing!)
Which are written by “real” Jonerys fans and which aren’t.
You don’t get to just make shit up.
Yes, some Dany stans are angry at Jon and want to punish him in their fics for S8 and make him sit by and watch while Dany hooks up with Daario or resurrected Drogo or Gendry or whoever.
Some Jon stans want Jon to breed Missandei and Sansa while still being married to Dany because they want to make Dany barren in their narrative even though in actual ASOIAF canon, she’s probably not.
It’s called, Deal with it.
Again, no one here is on the “right” side. No one should be policing the tag. Period.
Also, side note, no one should be insulting authors looks or using the public photos authors use as a way to harass them. This isn’t only happening to me. If we post photos of our lives, it’s because we want to share with people. It’s not an invitation for you to use that against us. Don’t be fucking creepy. And if you know if someone being fucking creepy, tell them to stop!

Leon Fanbook Translation: Profile
Link to the Takumi Fanbook
Introduction
Look who actually kept her promise! This still took me forever and a half, but I am very happy I got it pushed out within the time frame I imagined. Things are off to a good start, I think.
Before we continue, here is the same note as before: As I am currently without a real income, I would very much appreciate it if you could throw me a couple bucks via my ko-fi account. It doesn’t have to be a lot, just what you think my translations are worth really.

Prince Leon's Profile
His personal data, history, as well as dialogue and all sorts of information will be shown here. Before we can really know, and therefore talk about the younger Nohrian Prince Leon, we need to some basic information on him.
Tumblr media
Just what kind of person is Leon, the younger Prince of Nohr? If we start with data such as age, height and weight of the person in question and analyse everything until we arrive at topics such as his mother and his family, the information we can gain on him is not inconsiderable. Trying to pinpoint more through his in-game profile description “likes tomatoes the most out of everyone in the army”, one can glean his favourite food. Once he gets started, the praise he heaps upon tomatoes can become quite disconcerting. It seems that even with the 40 to 47 pages of published material, questionnaire results and submitted art,
Tumblr media
Leon’s image is forever associated with tomatoes. But, that’s not all. To be worthy of being called a Leon fan, it is necessary to know and understand him by collecting all the surrounding information on him, and thereby truly ascertain his character. Definitely things like him pretending to be cold in order to push others away, or how much he prides himself in being a strategist. Perhaps he also uses the strong impression left by something like his obsession with tomatoes to conceal the things about his character that he doesn’t want others to know.

History Data
Early Years
He was born as the child of King Garon of Nohr. In those days, Garon would keep a number of concubines, from whom he also received a lot of children, beside his legal wife Ekaterina. The woman who became Leon's mother was one of them. Their royal children's claim to the throne, as well as their constant aim to become worthy in the eyes of their “spouse”*, meant that the rivalry between the concubines grew ever more tense, and they soon became wrapped up in intrigues that were literally dripping with blood. Because of Leon's mother, who stood in opposition to the main faction belonging to Ekaterina, he did not have any contact with his older siblings, Marx and Camilla, during his early years.
Childhood Years
His handsome features inherited from his mother, and moreover his possessing an overwhelming number of outstanding qualities, made Garon take notice of Leon even among his many siblings. Leon's mother would use this fact as a trump card against Ekaterina's faction, as well as the mothers of the other children, in order to assert her own superiority. Compared to her stated motive of looking out for her son's interests, her desire to turn the King's love and attention towards her was clearly more important. According to Leon's own recollections, she never displayed much of what could be called „a mother's love“ towards her son. When Leon seemed to turn his talents towards the magic arts, his exceptional qualities became yet more polished as they bloomed. Once he reached the position of one of the most preeminent magic users in the kingdom, Leon was given a place at Garon's side next to Marx and Camilla. At the same time, Garon's many illegitimate children, as things were progressing towards the conclusion of their violent struggle over the selection process, finally acknowledged each other's existence.
Tumblr media
As for Leon, together with his older siblings, Marx, Camilla, Kamui, as well as his younger sister, Elise, he formed a unit that would later come to be referred to as the „The Nohrian siblings“. For someone like him, who grew up without receiving any parental love, there can be no doubt that the warmth reflected in the eyes of his siblings was a great source of happiness for him.
Once the war breaks out
And so, Leon, who had attained an untouchable position among the Nohrian royalty, continued expanding his magical abilities to become a Dark Knight of the highest order within the army. When he entered, it was with the Divine Weapon Brunhilde in his hands. Thanks to his tremendous powers, he was granted the title of „Gravity Master“. Due to not having had many allies because of the circumstances of his birth, he has a hard time trusting others, as well as a deep hatred for cowardly deeds and acts of betrayal. To tell the truth, his Nohrian brethren have in the past been on the receiving end of Leon's mercilessly executed punishments. This is why he is called cold-blooded, but instead it would be more apt to say that he is shaking with anger and unease on the inside. On the surface he appears to have a cool-head, and because of that seeing his true self sometimes shine through the cracks of the mask is all the more meaningful – For those who are familiar enough with him, this too is just another big part of „Prince Leon's“ appeal.
Resolution, as well as the future
As these events become history, it says that as the Nohrian and Hoshidan royalty joined hands and fought their mutual enemy together, the two younger princes, who grew up in similar circumstaces, seemingly displayed a mutual affinity for each other. It is further says that during battle Leon would rely on only his older brother, Marx, as well as his retainers, Odin and Zero, but after these events it would seem there is documented proof that the name of the younger Hoshidan Prince, Takumi, was added to the list as well. Leon's signature divine weapon „Brunhilde“ would later be inherited by his son, Foleo.

Monologue
Prince Leon's monologue
Level Up (Worst): Maybe my bearing wasn't befitting of royalty... Level Up (Low): Well, as expected. Level Up (Good): I'm glad this didn't end in embarrassment. Level Up (Best): It scares even me to see how strong I've become. Level Up (Max): I am already strong, so don't you think this is enough? Class Change: Hm, I trust that my clothes didn't turn inside out?
Buying: Be sure to pick something out that looks good on me, alright? Buying (salesperson): Only you would ever buy things for the person running the store. Selling: I would prefer if you didn't just go around selling my belongings... Selling (salesperson): Having my own belongings sold to me... it's painful. Forging: I'll show you I can handle any kind of weapon. Forging (salesperson): I dislike physical labour... I wonder if I can't just use magic?
Defeat (Classic Mode): No way... To think someone like me could be defeated... Although, I should accept death with dignity, I simply can't do that to my siblings... Allow me to retreat here... Defeat (Casual Mode): How dare you... To think of all people, I'd be forced to retreat... This is humiliating...
------------------------
1. Boku: The more non-threatening yet still distinctly male form of I. 2. Kisama: Used to be formal, but is now an incredibly rude way to say you (though also a bit antiquated). I think Leon mostly uses this with Ganz, Zola and Macbeth, as well as Corrin for part of Birthright. 3. Anata: Standard, “polite” way to say you.(although it has to be said that in common Japanese pronouns are not often used, and even anata can seem rude or weird when used in excess) 4. Omae: Literally “you in front of me”. Not the most polite, but can be used in casual situations. I think Leon mostly uses it with Elise. 5. The kanji used here was  夫 or literally husband. The concubines apparently considered Garon this, even if they weren’t on Ekaterina’s level, but I thought this would sound confusing, so I am clearing it up here.
Overally, I am enjoying the Leon book so far, although I would have liked if they had included more info about the conclusion of the concubine war and what exactly happened to Leon’s mom (or at least give her name!!).

The Care and Keeping of Your Writeblr | Pt. 1 - Getting Started
Hello all, and welcome to my guide of possibly-useful, possibly-not advice for creating and maintaining your own writing blog and connecting with the online writing community.
I'm in no way an expert, nor am I the best, most popular writeblr out there. Not all the advice I post will work for or even appeal to everybody, but I'd like to share what I've observed and found useful in my own time running this writeblr sideblog.
This installment will be covering the basics of GETTING STARTED.
So you've decided you want to start a writeblr. Good for you! The writeblr community is a great place for motivation, inspiration, sharing ideas, getting feedback, collecting resources, and just having good old fashioned fun with other writers. It can be intimidating to try and enter into an established community, and it's okay to be nervous. But with few exceptions, this is a very friendly place.
Choosing your URL:
This is the first thing you're going to be asked to do when starting a new blog, whether it be a main blog or a sideblog. You'll want to put a fair amount of thought into this as it can influence the amount of traffic on your blog and changing it later can confuse your followers. This is the simplest, most straightforward piece of advice anyone can give you - put something about writing in your URL. It doesn't have to be some variant of 'writing' if you don't want it to, but consider different ideas related to the craft. Images of typewriters, pens, ink, etc. all bring writing instantly to mind. Also consider your genre. You could use an offshoot of that such as "name-does-scifi."
If you're making a sideblog, consider whether you want your writeblr url to be similar to your main URL. (That's what I did.) Remember that likes, follows, and comments will all show up as coming from your main blog's URL. It may help other writeblrs make the connection between the two, especially in your early days. This is of course just a matter of personal preference. Food for thought.
An effective URL will make it easier for others to find and connect with you!
Writing a Title and Description/Bio:
Once you've fired up that shiny new URL, you'll find a lovely white void awaiting you, yearning for all those lovely words you've got inside your head. First and foremost, you'll see big block letters that probably say 'Untitled' at the top of the page, right under the header image. Again, I suggest putting something about writing in your blog title. This is the first thing someone sees when they open your blog, and again it lets them know if it's likely to have the kind of content they're after. This isn't mandatory by any means - you do you - but it may help you gain traffic in the beginning. Some writers, like myself, simply use their URL as the title, others use the title of their WIP, and others put any phrase that strikes their fancy.
Under the title, there's a space for a description. Use this space to introduce yourself, your WIP (if you want) and your blog. It can be as vague, specific, serious, humorous, long, or minimalist as you like. Browse some other writeblrs to get an idea for what appeals to you. Remember you are under no obligation to share any personal information including name, age, or location. Your privacy is yours to protect in whatever ways you see fit.
As far as content goes, here are some things you may want to mention in your description depending on the kinds of posts you plan on sharing.
genres (young/new adult, adult, children's, fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, etc.)
original works or fanfiction?
are you open to participation in tag games?
WIP titles
writing tips, humor, encouragement
liveblogging your writing process/journey
guides, resources, and references
will you be posting much original content or mostly reblogs?
links to other accounts/pages (hyperlinks are supported)
If your writeblr is a sideblog, consider listing your main URL in the bio and your writeblr URL in the bio of your main. Many people like to follow back, but since they were notified of likes, follows, and comments via your main URL, they may not put two and two together without some assistance.
Makin' it Pretty:
It's what's on the inside that counts, that much is true. But we can't help but be attracted to polished looking blogs. Don't worry about being fancy right away (or ever)! Just think about making your blog look well cared for. How? Choose an avatar/profile picture, a header, colors and fonts, and a theme. (Also note that lacking all of the above, including title and bio, can make your blog look suspicious to cautious users.)
The mobile/in-dash version of your blog and your in-browser blog can be customized separately, but your avatar, title and description will appear in both. The mobile version will look much the same as everyone else's, with variations in font, colors, and pictures. Fonts and colors can be selected from the settings/edit appearance menu. You'll want to upload a jpeg for the avatar (which can be square or round) and header (which you can reposition). It doesn't matter much what these pictures are - just have them in mind so you can get them in right away!
The easiest way to make your in-browser blog look nice is to select a theme. There are several free ones available with an array of different features so you can get the most bang for your zero bucks. Many are color and font customizable as well and support links, pages, and widgets. If you install pages for your characters, your WIP, or whatever you want one for, people will be seeing those through the in-browser version of your blog. Themes make it easy for them to navigate! (Click on the paint palette icon to change your theme.)
Writeblr Lingo:
Writers are pretty much a subculture, and we speak our own jargon. Here on Tumblr, there are also extra terms you may want to be familiar with as you get started. Here's a basic glossary for your reference. (Some may seem obvious, but I make no assumptions.)
Writeblr: Write + Tumblr = writeblr; a Tumblr account focused on writing
OC: original character
WIP: work-in-progress
Ref: reference
Sci-Fi: science fiction
YA: young adult; a genre typically considered well-suited for an audience of ages 13-18 and/or centered around protagonists of ages 13-18
NA: new adult; a genre considered geared toward an audience of 18-30 and/or centered around protagonists of this age range (note that this is a fairly new genre and the associated age range is somewhat variable); often associated with transitions from young adulthood to 'real' adulthood in terms of lifestyle, personality, etc.
Mutuals: people who are following each other; ie you follow them AND they follow you
Tag(ging) Game: a game passed around via tagging other writers in the post; played in the text body; most have the name and how to play within the text body
Tagging: typing the @ symbol followed by the account's URL; typing @ will pull up a menu of suggested URLs that display the blogs' avatars and will update as you type
Bookblr: a close cousin of writeblr; this blog type focuses on reading published books and often includes reviews and recommendations
Rec: recommendation
Comments? Suggestions? Corrections? Additions? Let me know what you thought about this guide and if you have any ideas for future installments, which are coming soon. Happy writing, everybody.

Not Exactly T.H. White

Viorica's review of the BBC's cracktastic Merlin.~
After what might be called a bitter breakup with BBC’s Robin Hood, I promised myself that I’d avoid any further TV shows that were more enjoyable for their badness than their quality. So when the majority of my Livejournal friendslist began squeeing over Merlin, I swore I’d avoid the temptation. No matter how shiny and cracky and homoerotic it appeared, I was not going to watch it, because I knew that if I did I’d be sucked into shiny-cracky-homoerotic-bad TV land. But eventually the temptation grew too strong, and I downloaded the first season to watch over Christmas break. I expected bad special effects; I got that. I expected inaccuracy; I got that in droves. I expected mediocre writing and acting, and I got . . . something else.
If you assumed from the title of the show that Merlin is based on Arthurian legends, you’d be better off abandoning that idea right now. The series revolves around a teenage boy named - you guessed it - Merlin who is sent to live at the court of Camelot by his mother, because he’s manifested magical powers, and she has an old friend, Gaius who lives at Camelot and who is better equipped to train Merlin than she is. Unfortunately for Merlin, magic is outlawed in Camelot, and has been since the birth of Prince Arthur about twenty years earlier. Yes, Merlin and Arthur and the same age, and that’s only the beginning of the divergence from the original stories. Merlin manages to land a job as Arthur’s manservant, much to Arthur’s chagrin, as Merlin has a tendency to call Arthur out on his bullshit. From there on in, it’s up to Merlin to protect Arthur from various pissed-off sorcerers (Arthur’s father Uther Pendragon has ordered all magic-users burned at the stake, which has naturally rubbed them up the wrong way) while simultaneously trying to hide his own powers and protect innocent people from Uther’s wrath. He’s helped by Guinevere, aka Gwen, a maid at the castle, and her mistress Morgana, Uther’s ward, who disagrees with his policies. Merlin is also mentored by a dragon being held prisoner under the castle, who has an irritating tendency to intone “Protecting Arthur is your destiny, Merlin!” at least once an episode.
If you think it sounds cheesy, you’re completely right. It’s intended as a kid’s show, and filmed with the audience in mind - despite the rather high amounts of violence (at least one person dies per episode) the camera always cuts away from the nasty stuff. The main conflict is Merlin’s need to hide the fact that he has magical powers, and the fact that this keeps conflicting with his need to protect Arthur, which obviously has no basis whatsoever in Arthurian legend, but then neither does anything else. As the series progresses, Arthur and Merlin’s relationship evolves from that of mutual resentment to comfortable partnership, and eventually friendship (which comes off as very, very very homoerotic, probably due to the fact that it involves a lot of hugging and acts of unwavering devotion. The cynical part of me thinks that the writers are playing to the crowd.) The actors playing Merlin and Arthur are actually quite good, and what they bring to their roles - quiet goodness in Colin Morgan’s case and brash testosterone in Bradley James’s - helps establish the boys as genuinely likeable people, struggling to figure out their place in the world. Angel Coulby is incredibly sweet as shy, blushing Gwen, who spends most of her time trying to make everyone as happy as possible. The weak link in the cast is Katie McGrath, who plays Morgana with a maximum of two facial expressions: smug and perturbed. The older actors are obviously having fun with their roles, and bringing some gravitas to the characters as well - Anthony Stewart Head’s Uther is unlikeable by virtue of his actions (this is, after all, a man who ordered all magicians put to death over a mistake he made) but thanks to Stewart Head’s talent, you can see a bit of humanity shining through from behind the throne. Richard Wilson’s Gaius is your standard mentor/father figure, with a dry sense of humour that managed to make me laugh at least once an episode. John Hurt voiced the Dragon, and there really isn’t much to say about his performance - given the fact that all he gets to do is blather about destiny, there isn’t much room to stretch. The guest stars are touch-and-go - Santiago Cabrera, who played Lancelot, was absolutely awful, while Asa Butterfield was suitably creepy as an eight-year-old Mordred. No one is giving Lawrence Olivier a run for his money, but they’re a very talented bunch, especially considering that most of them haven’t hit thirty yet.
I’m not entirely sure what I expected from the writing. Before watching it, I’d heard the show referred to “crappy tweenager fantasy” so I assumed it’d be a lot of rambling about Destiny and True Love and The Power of Friendship. While that is included (see my note on the Dragon of Destiny) it’s not as wearing as you might expect, mostly because the characters point out the stupidity of doing something because it’s My Destiny at least once an episode. No one wants to watch a show about people who do things because they’re told; most of the struggles come from Merlin and his friends struggling with the expectations they’re being held up to versus their own inherent sense of what’s right. My personal favourite episode revolves around a young boy who Uther wants to execute because he’s a Druid-in-training. Merlin, who obviously takes the stance that killing innocent children is wrong, enlists Morgana’s help to hide the boy, and Arthur’s to smuggle him out of Camelot. For this he is repeatedly chastised by the Dragon, because the boy is eventually going to kill Arthur. Merlin and co say “Screw this” and smuggle the boy away to his own people. At the end of the episode (spoilers, obviously) Arthur asks for his name, and the child replies “Mordred.” It’s a deliciously eerie moment (helped out by Mordred’s creepy stare) and an interesting message about Destiny v. Free Will: the choices of Merlin and his friends will make or break Camelot, but it’s up to them to decide what it’s worth. Fortunately, not all of the destiny-related storylines are that gloomy. For example, one of the show’s most endearing points is the relationship between Merlin and Arthur, which begins with Merlin flat-out chastising Arthur for taunting a servant. Although Merlin is repeatedly pushed towards the prince by the dragon (for this reason, he’s acquired the fandom nickname “Slash Dragon”) their relationship eventually becomes that of friends. When Merlin goes to protect Arthur at the potential expense of his own life, he’s doing it out of affection for the prince rather than a sense of duty, and that - the inherent nobility of the main cast - is a big part of what makes the show so endearing.
There is, of course, the problem of the show’s title, which I’ll have to address or risk this article becoming unadulterated gushing. I’m not especially familiar with Arthurian legend - I know the basics, and I’m about thirty pages into The Once and Future King, but I’m far from an expert - but from what I do know, I honestly can’t understand why they decided to tack the name “Merlin” on it at all. There are references to “canon”, such as it is - in one episode, Arthur is wounded by the Questing Beast - but overall, it plays out like an original story with occasional allusions to Thomas Malory or T.H. White. As I’ve said, it’s good enough to stand on its own, and I think the attempts at labelling it an Arthurian adaptation are going to be detrimental in the long run. Instead of being remembered as a well-written original series, it’s going to end up being dismissed as “that crappy Arthurian adaptation that screwed up the stories”. Actually, the fact that they felt the need to try and slap the name of a pre-existing story on it kind of makes me sad, because it implies that they felt they couldn’t market an original series, and that’s just depressing. Aside from the rage-inducing potential for Arthurian enthusiasts, there’s some holes in the writing - in one episode Morgana says that Gaius has been caring for her since before she can remember, then later claims that she came to live in Camelot when she was ten, implying either than she has long-term memory loss or that someone didn’t proofread closely enough. Still, the small slipups aren’t enough to detract from a genuinely enjoyable show. And if all else fails, you can always hit mute and enjoy the eye candy.Themes:

at 10:16 on 2009-01-14Hello, welcome - and thank you for this wonderful review. I no longer need feel ashamed of my secret love for Merlin. When it first came on, I dismissed it after about 10 ten minutes (Uther's first 'by the way, this is the backplot' speech didn't help) but a few weeks later my LJ friendslist also exploded with squee and joy, so I gave it another go and, lo, it was simultaneously awesome and awful and utterly utterly watchable.
You're absolutely right about Morganna not being quite up to speed on, y'know, this 'acting' thing ... but she is very, very beautiful, so I don't mind. And the dragon is a bit repetative, despite being voiced by John Hurt.
The weird thing is I don't really get any slashy kind of vibe from Arthur and Merlin, despite the fact that these two boys finding friendship and making sacrifices for each other ought to be very homoerotic. I suppose I find it slashy in principle but there isn't much a spark between the actors (I mean in terms of teh gay) to make it stick. Possibly I am just missing.
As you say in your conclusion I do find Merlin's status as an adaption interesting - I actually rather enjoyed the complete lack of respect with which they treated the mythos, once I got over myself about it. The Arthurian background does give it all a familiarity and a resonance that might have been lacking if it was just Generic Fantasy Story About Friendship and Valour. Although it is a bit dodgy I have come to think the Arthurian dimension does add something - there's always something joyous about watching people play in the paddling pool of literature and start a water fight.

at 10:49 on 2009-01-14Yay! I somewhat guiltily enjoyed Merlin myself, including the not-quite-aside allusions to actual canon / legend (the court genealogist appears to be Geoffrey of Monmouth ;-)). Arthurian legend, historically, has been pretty flexible and as far as I know there isn't any real canon — so I'm all in favor of going in a new direction with it, and I'm quite willing to forgive the writers for taking advantage of all the gravitas and popular awareness that Arthur's story gives you. As you said, that moment when the little Druid boy tells Arthur his name is eerie -- but it would have been meaningless if it hadn't been Mordred talking to Arthur, and / or you didn't know who Mordred and Arthur were.
About the cast — Anthony Head and Richard Wilson are brilliant, of course, I can't disagree, but I have to admit I don't share your reservations about Katie McGrath. (But maybe that's because of the eye-candy factor.)
Perhaps it's my lack of slash goggles but I don't see the "very, very homoerotic" between Merlin and Arthur? I wonder if it's just 21st-century cynicism that makes "heartfelt and sincere" have to mean "Twu Wuv"?

at 22:18 on 2009-01-14I suppose the slash question depends on what you go in expecting. I was told repeatedly before ever watching it that the boys were the slashiest slashy things that were ever slashed, so I went in with slash goggles firmly strapped on. And I suppose there's an interesting study to be done on the way men show affection v. the way women do and how it's interpreted by outside observers . . . but as far as fandom's concernd, it's all about the pretty and the gay.
As for Katie McGrath, she is pretty, but there's always this irritating feeling that I'd like the character so much more if she could emote properly. As it is, she tends to grate.
Apropos of nothing, have you watched the video diaries? They're screamingly hilarious, and both Bradley James and Colin Morgan act uncannily like their characters. It's a little creepy . . .

at 11:35 on 2009-01-15That's the thing, although I'm not a slasher myself, I do occasionally find myself on the outskirts of fandom enough to have some slash goggles of my own. I was prepared for slash, I looked for slash, I saw ... the motions of slash ... but I didn't *feel* the slash. Sometimes there's a genuine spark between actors or something about the way a relationship is portrayed that makes me secretly believe something could conceivably be going on between them. I was re-watching DS9 (sad bastard that I am) recently and, despite knowing not a damn thing about the DS9 fandom, I became immediately and increasingly convinced that Sisko and Dukat were having incredibly hot hatesex... (Dan holds out for Dax/Kira girlsex, however, - they are certainly very giggly together).
I watched some of the video diaries - Bradley James is so adorably silly. I mean this in a maternal way, not a sick way. I particularly liked his musing on the cockatrice.
By the way, I meant to ask, what caused things to sour with Robin Hood? I never watched it so...

Merlin
the way it is. T.H. White took some pretty big liberties along the way (though if you're thirty pages in, I won't spoil that), as have any of the people who have written the story down over the years. The trouble is convincing people there's not really a canon to be followed, that if you take the earliest versions of the stories and put them to what you might find in a modern collection, there are so many differences that you might think you weren't reading the same story at all.

at 19:51 on 2009-01-16Well, it could be argued that there are some basic plot foundations- Merlin being Arthur's mentor, Guinevere as his wife (though they still have time to do that), Morgana being his half-sister, etc. I think the reason some people don't like it is because they grew up on "The Sword and the Stone", so the show is effectively stomping on their childhood memories. I don't have any such memories to get stomped on, so it doesn't bug me.
Re: Robin Hood. It started out as silly fun, but it as it went on, you realized that the people running the show didn't know or care what they were doing. There were no efforts at making the costumes or scenery look nice, and virtually none of the characters were likeable, or even tolerable. Their Robin is the kind of guy who whines at an ex-girlfriend for "betraying" him when she's forced into marriage with another man. The urge to punch the title character in the face was stronger than any desire to keep watching.

at 22:16 on 2009-01-16Great article. I didn't catch all the episodes, but definitely enjoyed the ones I did see. I like your point about the gravitas the older actors bring, particularly Head (in what could have been a pretty thankless role given his character's lack of humour).
Interesting discussion about the appropriate amount of reverence for the source material, too. I quite like the way Merlin did it, with plenty there for people who do know a bit about Arthurian legend but not so much you know for sure what's going to happen. I never saw Smallville, but I think of Merlin in much the same way - you know what happens down the line, but these are the gaps in between. And knowing what lies ahead is an interesting experience, because you're watching for it and everyone involved in the show knows you are (of the ones I saw, Lancelot's episode was the most willing to play with this).
It's also pretty dangerous, of course, because unless they're willing to go down the rejected destiny road the main young characters all have to live. I think they've got a nice balance - there's plenty of peril, but the real danger is more often disgrace than death (though I missed the last few episodes, so for all I know there was a dramatic and bloody finale).

at 01:30 on 2009-01-17There was *almost* a dramatic and bloody finale, but it was averted. You should really watch to see why, though- that episode actually managed to make me tear up a bit.
"Great article."
Thanks!

Yes! It's not all that different in many ways -- Smallville takes a lot of liberties with Superman canon (Lex Luthor and Clark Kent being friends, for instance), and I guess one of the reasons that it's more or less accepted is that Superman canon has been retconned so many times nobody's sure what *is* canon anymore. I think much the same is true for Arthurian legend ;-)

The trouble is convincing people there's not really a canon to be followed...
I think this really nails the issue; perhaps, for a lot of people T.H.White is "canon", although it's Roger Lancelyn Green for me, personally - I have no idea who that guy is but basically every book available for kids about anything vaguely mythic, Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Celtic, was written, semi-turgidly, by this dude. Anyway, what I've got distracted from saying here is: a lot of those things we associate with the Arthur Legend today have very little in common with the early source material. Guinevere is barely in Malory - he just wasn't into chicks - and there's a sense that a lot of her bad press comes from the fact he decided to situate the fall of his macho martial ideal in damn women with their lack of appreciation for war, dammit, war. There's very little actually 'romantic' about Le Morte.

IRA Financial Trust Hack Reportedly Sees USD 36M in Crypto Stolen From Users
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: AdobeStock / Zhanna
US-based IRA Financial Trust, a regulated financial institution that offers self-directed retirement accounts, has been hit with a hack that resulted in the loss of USD 36m in crypto, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the investigation.
IRA Financial’s official Twitter account previously confirmed that they discovered “suspicious activity” related to consumer funds on February 8, adding that it “has affected a limited subset of our customers with accounts on the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange.”
They further added that they notified all affected customers individually, and that “non-impacted customers” were notified “separately.” The company said that they are unable to provide comments due to the ongoing investigation.
While IRA Financial Trust has not officially disclosed details of the hack, the source told Bloomberg that USD 21m worth of bitcoin (BTC) and USD 15m worth of ethereum (ETH) has been drained from the accounts of IRA Financial Trust customers.
IRA, or individual retirement account, is a form of an individual retirement plan that offers tax-advantaged savings instruments for US workers. IRAs allow users to invest in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, but not cryptoassets.
However, unlike its peers, IRA Financial Trust allows its customers to purchase crypto through a partnership with major crypto platform Gemini Trust Co.
In a statement published five days ago, Gemini acknowledged the incident but noted that it offers a number of security controls, adding that it “has not been hacked and remains secure.”
“While IRA Financial’s accounts are serviced on the Gemini platform, Gemini does not manage the security of IRA Financial’s systems,” the company’s fraud and security team said. “The security of Gemini’s platform has not been impacted and we have offered assistance to IRA Financial in their investigation. For more information, please reach out to IRA Financial.”
Meanwhile, impacted users are taking it to Reddit to complain about the situation. “I’ve followed up with both Gemini and IRA Financial and they said they are working on it. I haven’t heard of anyone else being affected by this hack,” one user said.
In a reply, some apparent users have claimed that thieves have directed stolen funds to a Roth IRA account with the name “Benjamin Choe.” They speculated that the hacker might have managed to compromise an employee account with admin privileges, perhaps by taking over the domain, and then used that account to move funds to the ‘Choe’ account.
“And from that account they did have a whitelist address setup that allowed them to move funds out of Gemini to their address,” one user said, stressing that this is just speculation.
“I only had cash in my Gemini account, no coin, and it was all taken in multiple transfers to Choe at [USD] 10k per transfer,” another Reddit user wrote in the thread. “So in only 15 seconds they moved all my cash.”

As per reports, the couple has now disclosed their romantic affair to the chief of the news network. Her former husband, Mark Wallace, however, refused to comment on anything regarding the romantic affair.
The paparazzi spotted Nicolle and Michael at the SXSW festival in Texas. Another source close to Wallace and Schmidt revealed that they just attended a breakfast together. Nicolle Wallace has quite an impressive résumé. In addition to being a pretty familiar face on television thanks to her various high-profile gigs, Wallace also worked as the White House Communications Director for President George W. Bush and served as a campaign advisor for John McCain in 2008, per Daytime Confidential.
While these days, she's the host of MSNBC's Deadline: White House, Wallace cut her teeth as a co-host for ABC's The View in 2014. Wallace was hired to be the 'Republican at the table,' according to the Los Angeles Times. That season, Wallace co-hostedThe View with Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O'Donnell, and Rosie Perez, according to The Mercury News.
Wallace's time on The View seemed to be going well. In fact, Goldberg once said of her former co-host: 'The only thing better than one hour with Nicolle Wallace is two — it just makes you smarter,' according to the Los Angeles Times. That's some high praise! Needless to say, when Wallace was fired in 2015 after only one season, viewers were shocked.
Why was Wallace fired? We've got the answers.
Nicolle Wallace 'loved' her time on 'The View'
At the time of Nicolle Wallace's firing in 2015, she had only been in the co-host seat onThe View for one season. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in August 2020, Wallace was asked if she liked working on The View. She replied: 'I loved it, I loved it.' So what happened? It might have had something to do with the fact that the show was seemingly more subdued than usual during Wallace's time on The View. She told the Los Angeles Times: 'Well, I think the problem was it wasn't contentious that season I was on.'
Understandably, Wallace's termination from The View was tough for her. 'Being fired from a TV show where you think you're kind of baring your soul feels personal because it is. It's like being broken up with,' she said, adding, 'Because I never worked in entertainment I think what I didn't understand is: It really was a casting, and it was a casting they didn't like.'
Nicole Wallace Twitter
Despite the failed 'casting,' Wallace still had to say goodbye to her co-hosts.
Nicolle Wallace's relationship with Whoopi Goldberg
While chatting with the Los Angeles Timesin August 2020, Nicolle Wallace spoke about her relationship with her co-hosts after she was fired from The View in 2015. Wallace explained that she reached out to the other hosts: 'I sought to make peace with Rosie O'Donnell and Rosie Perez.'
Brave of the six flowers. It's worth noting that Perez left the show in 2015, too, per Deadline. Meanwhile, O'Donnell, who had been a host on The View previously, left in 2007 and came back in 2014 only to exit again in 2015, according to Entertainment Weekly. In 2020, O'Donnell told Howard Stern that a return to The View probably wasn't in the cards for her, per EW. As of this writing, Whoopi Goldberg is still on The View and interestingly, Goldberg was brought on as O'Donnell's replacement when the latter left in 2007, according to EW.

These days, Goldberg is the only host left from the 2014 grouping and is someone who Wallace seemingly bonded with. During her interview with the Los Angeles Times, Wallace commented on their friendship and Goldberg's political savvy. 'I had such a special friendship with Whoopi Goldberg — the first human being who I have ever heard say out loud, in the summer of 2015 — '(Trump) is going to be a president, guys.' I remember whipping my head around and looking at her.'

While it was no doubt a shock to leave The View, Wallace has moved on to MSNBC's Deadline: White House and seems to be thriving on that platform.

11 Proven Tips on How to Use Reddit for Your eCommerce Business
Tumblr media
Before getting to the meat, let us just make a quick recap.
Reddit 101
In essence, it’s a mega discussion board. As many as 330 million unique users spend their time on this 5th largest US website (and 18th larges when talking worldwide).
Reddit is divided into tens of thousands of so-called “subreddits” which is a local term for a specific topic thread. Moreover, all users who rpartake in the discussion can personally receive either an appraisal or disapproval from peer Reddit patrons via score system called “karma.”
Karma is gained and lost when people upvote or downvote your posts, comments and when you engage in other onsite activity (like reposting). It could’ve remained a simple medal system if sometimes it wasn’t required to get into some subreddits (a sort of an entry barrier). Certain types of activity like making your posts with pictures or leaving comments in those subreddits also might have various krama requirements. Naturally, low karma of user’s post may be hidden from other users, which is the main defense mechanism against bots, local spammers and general bad-manner users.
Although using anonymous aliases on Reddit is a common thing (and is expected), these accounts each have a traceable history of posts and replies in addition to gained “karma.” Thus it is super-easy for any reader to assess the general usefulness, sincerity, and attitude of the writer for a preliminary decision of whether to trust what he/she posts. The importance of this transparency for e-commerce marketing on Reddit will be discussed a bit further.
Upon a glimpse of a Reddit from the marketing perspective, two things should immediately come to one’s attention.
One is that this website is in English and US users account for over 50%. Which kind of limits the use of this website for e-commerce of goods that either
Can be delivered online or
Can be physically brought to the US soil at a reasonable price (and with easy logistics for the buyer)
Two is that Reddit is above all else a place where people come the exchange thoughts and ideas on mutual subjects of interest. Not to scroll the fancy pictures like in Instagram or get up to date with the news like in Facebook. Reddit boasts a higher than most websites readers to active commenters ratio (these readers are also called “lurkers”). This is important because not everything an e-commerce website has to offer is in fact worthy of being put to public discussion. The goods that are too specialized (e.g. some industrial tunneling equipment) will thus require copious amount of “knowledge seeding” and attracting rare individuals who are familiar with the subject before anything can be offered for sale. And the goods/ services that are too easy to come buy (like an Alibaba dropshipper) will need some god-like marketing skills for hype generation and building up of anxiety before trying to offer something (without risking your karma). But let us assume that your product (or service) meets the above criteria and you are good to go for the Redditors!
The need for naturally growing one’s credibility in the eyes of Reddit patrons can sometimes be too much for a regular business owner or a marketing manager, even if he/ she did well with other means of social marketing like Instagram. This is why there are a few essay writing service who are experienced at keeping close contact with the Reddit public. These people know how to keep Redditors entertained and sell stuff to them at the same time. But if you feel you are up to the challenge of winning hearts and minds on your own, proceed to the tips’ list below!
Obvious marketing
1.    Sponsored posts
Just like it says on the box: Reddit allows you to engage in paid marketing. Reddit payment system Your ad copy can either be “text ad” or “link ad.” Whichever you pick, it will get displayed for a respective target audience and marked as sponsored.
People who’ve dealt with Facebook or Google paid ads before will find the interface quite familiar. The following settings are available to pin-point you desired audience:
Target users by their interests (keywords and negative keywords)
Choose specific subreddit they subscribe to
Location
Day and time
Device type (mobile or desktop)
All ads are displayed on an auction-based system (you need to set up daily bid starting from $5/day) and CPM (1000 impressions) is the only type of payment available on this platform.
This kind of marketing is treated by Reddit communities pretty much like any other online ads which try to look like regular messages: if your ad copy conveys clear message and is highly relevant to the selected audience you will get some interest. The difference lies in karma score of the account who posts the ads, as accounts with more karma are usually treated by patrons as certainly more worthy of attention.
2.        Banner Ads
You will find no self-service banner ads option on Reddit. Don’t bother looking for one. The only viable way to get your banners to be shown on Reddit is direct negotiations with the portal. Which is typically honored from a large and well-established business. So unless it say “Google” on your office, you’d best move to ninja marketing section.
Here Comes The Meat! Ninja Marketing On Reddit
3.        Reddit hates spammers and promoters
Simply jumping into a subreddit topic closest to what you want to sell and offer your product or service there is a “highway to hell” with Reddit audience. Believe it or not – you are likely not to be the first person to try and push your goods forward here. And must Reddit patrons are smart enough to see that intention. In addition, unlike Instagram of YouTube Reddit offers them an instrument to quickly downvote your annoying advertising to the point of utter demise.
To be effective with your business on Reddit you should first understand the culture of this community and how to get your point (non-commercial and commercial) through in a most effective manner. There are different posts as well, and you should be prepared nor only for discussion, but for writing a long story to share your experience. You may are thinking right now, that I need someone to write my essay for posting on Reddit, and surely that can be a solution for creating a large number of long read comments. Above all else, you will have to truly and honestly commit yourself to some time of building up your Reddit account image and growing your karma before effectively offering people anything.  So think ninja.
4.        Where does your audience reside? Do your homework.
To engage efficiently in the ninja advertising on Reddit, you will need first to  do some preliminary research. Find out what subreddits (topic threads) address the issues that are in your (and your product’s) subject field. Are you in car repairs? Search car maintenance audience.  Are you a massage therapist? Dig into sports or back pain discussions.
See how many people are partaking and what kind of info is most praised by local subreddit  audience.
5.        Be proactive and build up your karma and professional image
Once you’re done with the research and successfully found your potential customers, you should start working on the rename of your account. Do actively engage in discussion. Answer questions and comment where appropriate. Be polite and be helpful. Bring value to the table. Over time (and sometimes with sufficient karma gain) your contributions will get noted, and your advice on the subject X will start to be recognised as an expert by the community.
Only after this you should attempt to openly offer of a product or service and expect in to be met with enthusiasm and eager by Reddit patrons.
Why bother that much at all you might as at this point? Well, there is a good reason. Reddit is in fact great fo e-commerce shops as it allows you to address very specific needs of customers who you just can’t target effectively by any other means. And should you meet their expectations both with a word of advise and a quality product you are likely to get more devoted and trusting long-term customers than anywhere else on the Internet. This holds true to both paid and ninja advertising: the more renown you are amongst Reddi public the more trustworthy your ads will be, regardless if you pay Reddit for it ot not.
6.        Ask questions and study your customers
Now, this is the real meat. As Reddit tends to attract a more proactive audience in general (more so than the Facebook or Instagram) you will find some strong and well-grounded opinions here on a wide area of subjects. If so – why now use this feature and ask the people very specific and important questions:
What do they think of your product?
How do they like the new design?
Can we improve it somehow?
What about marketing?
Was our customer service helpful?
Being open and actively engaging your customers in such Q&A activities might help you with some surprisingly deep understanding as to how to make/ sell your goods better. Good advice would be to remain initiative and open a classical AMA (Ask Me Anything) session with your potential customers. Also, remember that whenever a person makes a buying decision, he or she is far more likely to address the salesman they know in person (even in it’s on the account name) than a totally strange shop offering of the same stuff. So treat this not only as research but as an extra marketing effort which may yield grade results by itself.
7.      Exclusive discounts and offers
When you do decide it’s time to engage your fellow Reddit audience with some selling materials – you may take it a step further. Offer the unique discount right there in the thread. Alternatively, run a lottery for the first five buyers to get some valuable little extra from you. Redditors, after all, are a somewhat unique gang. So why not reward them with a little extra for their trust in you and your product?
8.        Keep sticky contact with your customers
Another diamond opportunity Reddit offer to an e-commerce business is that it’s a much more two-way marketing channel than your usual social media with ads due to the nature of the community. It makes a perfect ground for troubleshooting and Q&A sessions with your customers. By no means, you should use it as the only customer service contact point, but rather as a place where you and your customers can get more intimate discussion and create that extra goodwill.
How should you go about it? Make sure you are there when somebody has purchased your good or service. Be bold and ask them if they found their purchase and usage experience satisfying? Did they like it? Did they encounter any trouble when buying or using it? Whom would they recommend it to? Etc.
Do so and not only you will gain respect (and more karma) from fellow Reddit users and those who will find this thread in future.
9.        Go for the fans and enthusiasts
While not an all-around advice, if you are into merchandising or a subculture tailored product – go for the fans. This range greatly from Star Trek fans to young mothers. From Linux users to vegans. And many are found on Reddit.
These people would certainly sniff out a bold promoter from a mile (and demise their karma respectively). But if you do give yourself labour to study their subreddits, their culture and values, if you take a genuine interest in the community and to partake in talks and making valuable content… You will surely get praised for offering and selling them something relevant to their passion later on.
10.    Keep an eye for market trends
This idea is somewhat similar to point 4, but the results can be used regardless of whether you are about to start ninja marketing on Reddit or not.
All you need is to define the existing subreddits which get visited by your potential customers and scrutiny them carefully. Moreover, if there is not one – than that is also an indication for you.
This tip arguably requires the least effort on your behalf: just gain enough karma to enter the subreddit in question (if it has a karma entry barrier at all) and that’s it. Once you do get inside and you see a living and vivid community – start gathering intelligence for your e-commerce business. Read on what’s hot right now. What are Redditors talking about the most (apart from kittens or sex that is; nothing beats kittens on Reddit). Learn of your potential customers’ pain and how they go about it. Assess your rival by how often they get mentioned and what the patrons find good and bad about them.
While not selling or promoting your product directly, you may still gather a great deal of info about your market niche and make sure that your respective product is up to the mark.
11.    Talk with other small-business owners
Would you sell your product to the people whom you find in small business owners subreddits? Probably not. So why is this a tip #11? Well, it because this is how you can get some seriously deep and free advice on things that bother you as a business owner:
How to sell more?
How to keep positive contact with your customers?
How to keep the work-life balance in December?
etc.
Tumblr media
Reddit is there to help people get in touch, discuss and solve their problems. And rest assured that there were others before you at some point in their business careers who faced and successfully surpassed what you are facing now. Have the courage to step forward and ask their advice or help. And again you may well be surprised by the hidden power of Reddit. And its fellow patron Redditors.

Believe it or not - you are likely not to be the first person to try and push your goods forward here.
Reddit is in fact great fo e-commerce shops as it allows you to address very specific needs of customers who you just can't target effectively by any other means.
If so - why now use this feature and ask the people very specific and important questions:
What do they think of your product?
How do they like the new design?
Can we improve it somehow?
What about marketing?
Was our customer service helpful?
Being open and actively engaging your customers in such Q&A activities might help you with some surprisingly deep understanding as to how to make/ sell your goods better. Good advice would be to remain initiative and open a classical AMA (Ask Me Anything) session with your potential customers. Also, remember that whenever a person makes a buying decision, he or she is far more likely to address the salesman they know in person (even in it's on the account name) than a totally strange shop offering of the same stuff. So treat this not only as research but as an extra marketing effort which may yield grade results by itself.
7.      Exclusive discounts and offers
When you do decide it’s time to engage your fellow Reddit audience with some selling materials - you may take it a step further.
While not an all-around advice, if you are into merchandising or a subculture tailored product - go for the fans.
Moreover, if there is not one - than that is also an indication for you.
This tip arguably requires the least effort on your behalf: just gain enough karma to enter the subreddit in question (if it has a karma entry barrier at all) and that’s it. Once you do get inside and you see a living and vivid community - start gathering intelligence for your e-commerce business.

THE COURAGE OF HACKERS
And if the performance of all the different ways in which we'll seem backward to future generations that we wait till patients have physical symptoms to be diagnosed with conditions like heart disease and cancer. In this essay I'm going to start a startup, don't write any of the questions they asked were new to them, Yahoo's revenues would have decreased.1 Bertrand Russell wrote in a letter in 1912: Hitherto the people attracted to philosophy have been mostly those who loved the big generalizations, which were all wrong, so that few people with exact minds have taken up the subject. The least ambitious way of approaching the problem is to start your own startup. It's probably what it was: they were building class projects. It has nothing to do with anything as complex as an image of a visionary.2 So are hackers, I think we actually applied for a patent on it.3 Google was indistinguishable from a nonprofit. Writing novels doesn't pay as well as implementation. But recently I realized we can also attack the problem downstream.
They call the things that has surprised me most about startups is how few of the most powerful motivator of all—more powerful even than the nominal goal of most startup founders, based on who we're most excited to see applications from, I'd say it's probably the mid-twenties. Here's where benevolence comes in. That becomes an end in itself. This of course gave empathy a bad name, and I noticed a remarkable pattern in them.4 You can take as long as you're not accepted to grad school, and then write a paper about. With speaking it's the opposite: having good ideas is an alarmingly small component of being a good speaker uses that. Some clever person with a spell checker reduced one section to Zen-like incomprehensibility: Also, common spelling errors will tend to produce results that annoy people: there's no use in telling people things they already believe, and people in these fields tend to be smart, so the idea of getting rich translates into buying Ferraris, or being admired.5
You have to imagine being two people. That's probably why everyone else has been overlooking the idea.6 Of all the useful things we can say with some confidence is that these are the glory days of hacking. If you made something no better than GMail, but fast, that alone would let you start to pull users away from GMail. These things don't get discovered that often. Computer Programs.7 This is all to explain how Plato and Aristotle. And yet it doesn't seem to pay. I have by now internalized doesn't even know where to begin in raising objections to this project.
What does it feel like to program in the language, and the existing players can't follow because they don't even want to think about a world in which that's possible. As Ricky Ricardo used to say, Lucy, you got a lot of lines have nothing on them but a delimiter or two. Better to operate cheaply and give your ideas time to evolve. If you made something no better than GMail, but fast, that alone would let you start to pull users away from GMail. I think there will be people who take a risk and use it. I've seen writing so far removed from spoken language that it couldn't be fixed sentence by sentence. They won't be replaced wholesale. Much to the surprise of the builders of the first digital computers, Rod Brooks wrote, programs written for them usually did not work. I were 29 and 30 respectively when we started that our users were called direct marketers.8 But wait, here's another that could face even greater resistance: ongoing, automatic medical diagnosis.
It just made me spend several minutes telling you how great they are. You don't have to have practical applications. There is always a big time lag in prestige. But how common will that be?9 I felt bad about this, the better an idea it seems. We didn't need this software ourselves. At any rate, the result is that scientists tend to make their work look as mathematical as possible. This essay is derived from a talk at the 2008 Startup School. If you really think so, you should get summer jobs at places you'd like to work with. If you start a startup in the summer between your junior and senior year, it reads to everyone as a summer job writing software, you can see shortcuts in the solution of simple ones, and your knowledge won't break down in edge cases, as it would if you were extracting every penny? Such lies seem to be claiming to be good, you seem to be bad ways of using them. What makes Google so valuable is that their users have money.
Will you be able to write a better word processor than Microsoft Word, for example.10 At this point, when someone comes to us with something that users like but that we use that heretofore despised criterion, applicability, as a guide to keep us from wondering off into a swamp of abstractions. His response was to launch Wittgenstein at it, with dramatic results. Much to the surprise of the builders of the first digital computers, Rod Brooks wrote, programs written for them usually did not work. Its main purpose is to communicate something to an audience.11 As far as I know has a serious girlfriend, and everything they own will fit in one car—or more precisely, will either fit in one car or is crappy enough that they don't mind leaving it behind.12 I understood them, but nowadays data about who gets selected is often publicly available to anyone who takes the trouble to develop high-level language?
Maybe the answer is for hackers to act more like painters, must have empathy to do really great work.13 The 32 year old.14 This is one of the reasons startups win.15 It turns out that looking at things from someone else's point of view. Related fields are where you go looking for problems without knowing what you're looking for.16 If you find something broken that you can fix for a lot less money. Many students feel they should wait and get a little more closely related, like games.
There is a lot more analysis. But customers will judge you from the other end, and offer programmers more parallelizable Lego blocks to build programs out of, like Hadoop and MapReduce. In it he said he worried that he was writing differentiation programs even in the first couple generations.17 And even then they rarely said so outright. Back when I was in college. Does that make written language worse? But a constant multiple of any curve is exactly the same shape.
Notes
Quoted in: Life seemed so much from day to day indeed, is caring what random people thought it was because he was before, and anyone doing due diligence for an IPO, or can be more precise, and wouldn't expect the opposite way from the moment it's created indeed, is not work too hard to avoid that. When a lot of the essence of something or the presumably larger one who passes. Which is fundraising. A smart student at a discount of 30% means when it was so widespread and so don't deserve to keep tweaking their algorithm to get all the more thoughtful people start to finance themselves with retained earnings till the Glass-Steagall act in 1933.
But there are not mutually exclusive. In the Daddy Model may be a startup enough to be able to. The revenue estimate is based on respect for their judgement.
Without visual cues e. Conjecture: The Civil Service Examinations of Imperial China, Yale University Press, 1981. He had equity. Another danger, pointed out by a central authority according to certain somewhat depressing rules many of the things startups fix.
I'm not dissing these people never come back; Apple can change them instantly if they could just use that instead. It doesn't happen often.
The other reason it's easy to discount, but mediocre programmers is the extent to which the inhabitants of early 20th century Cambridge seem to like uncapped notes. But that is allowing economic inequality is really about poverty. 5 million cap.
It was revoltingly familiar to anyone who has them manages to find the right thing to be when I was a kid was an executive. Watt didn't invent the spreadsheet.
Or it may seem to be a lost cause to try to write a book about how to argue: they hoped they were more dependent on banks for capital for expansion. Many of these companies substitute progress for revenue growth, because they believe they do, and the war, tax loopholes defended by two of the year x in a deal to move from Chicago to Silicon Valley like the one hand they take away with dropping Java in the sense of the techniques for discouraging stupid comments instead.
That was a strong craving for distraction. Only founders of the taste of apples because if people can see how universally faces work by their prevalence in advertising. A smart student at a time of its users, however, by doing everything in it. Which is precisely my point.
Because in medieval towns, monopolies and guild regulations initially slowed the development of new inventions until they become well enough but the route to that knowledge was to become dictator and intimidate the NBA into letting him play. Because it's better if everything just works. In fact, if you want as an investor I don't mean to kill bad comments to solve a lot better to be sharply differentiated, so it's conceivable that intellectual centers like Cambridge will one day is the stupid filter, which have remained more or less, then invest in syndicates. That may require asking, because the rich.
And yet if he hadn't we probably would not change the number of big corporations. Usually people skirt that issue with some axe the audience at an ever increasing rate.
One reason I even mention the possibility is that the http requests are indistinguishable from those of popular Web browsers, including that Florence was then the richest country in the 1960s, leaving less room to avoid collisions in. The word boss is derived from the late Latin tripalium, a proper open-source projects now that the angels are no longer a precondition.
Some want to stay around, but he turned them down. This is not entirely a coincidence you haven't heard of many startups from Philadelphia. No, but Confucius, though. The way universities teach students how to value valuable things.
But that doesn't exist. In many ways the New Deal was a test of intelligence. When you had a broader meaning. Indiana University Bloomington 1868-1970.
Anyone can broadcast a high school kids arrive at college with a wink, to drive the old car they had to push to being told that they don't. The Duty of Genius, Penguin, 1991. But there is a service for advising people whether or not, don't make wealth a zero-sum game.
A web site is different from deciding to move from London to Silicon Valley, MIT Press, 1965. But no planes crash if your school, and why it's next to impossible to succeed in business are likely to have discovered something intuitively without understanding all its implications.
I'm not making any commitments. 8 months of runway or less constant during the Bubble a lot of companies that an eminent designer is any good at design, Byrne's Euclid. But it's dangerous to Microsoft than Netscape was.
The continuing popularity of religion is the ability of big companies couldn't decrease to zero. Something similar happens with suburbs. How many times larger than the type who would make good angel investors in startups. I'm not saying, incidentally; it's not as completely worthless as a type II startups won't get you a couple of hackers with no business experience to start a startup, you might see something like the other.

The Care and Keeping of Your Writeblr | Pt. 3 - Connecting with Other Writeblrs
Hello all, and welcome to my possibly-useful, possibly-not advice for creating and maintaining your own writing blog and connecting with the online writing community.
I'm in no way an expert, nor am I the best, most popular writeblr out there. Not all the advice I will post will work for or even appeal to everybody, but I'd like to share what I've observed and found useful in my own time running this writeblr sideblog.
This installment will be covering basic tools for MAKING CONNECTIONS.
See also: Pt. 1 - Getting Started, Pt. 2 - Anatomy of the Common Writeblr
The writeblr community is an amazing place. We're incredibly lucky to have such an easily accessed creative space, and the best resources for writers are often other writers. It can be intimidating, though, to break into a large, established community, but things don't have to be so tough! Keep in mind that most writeblrs were once exactly where you are. Many are still nervous reaching out to new people, and that's okay! Here are a few tips that may help ease your way.
Writeblr Intro:
These are absolutely essential if you want to get your writeblr noticed! If you've read Pt. 2 of this series, you're familiar with the function and content of these introductory posts. This is where you get to announce your presence and your writing when you're ready. Most writeblrs are only too happy to reblog other people's intros - we all remember how happy it made us to see people spreading the word about us when we were new! Don't worry about making yourself sound too universally appealing or about revealing personal information you don't feel comfortable sharing. (Protect your privacy, guys.) Just take this time to be yourself and let everyone know what your blog will be all about. This is the easiest, simplest way to start connecting with other writeblrs and to see how friendly this community can be!
Reblog Other Writers:
Writing is tough, and we all need support. That's one of the greatest aspects of this community - writers supporting writers. It can be challenging to get your work out there (not to mention intimidating), and it means a lot to see someone re-sharing what you've posted. For people looking to participate in an online community, reciprocal relationships are a big draw. If you show an investment in someone else's work, they're often glad to do the same for you. Key word here: relationships.
Note that relationships in this context doesn't have to be anything personal or deep. Show an interest. Be a supporter. Hit the reblog button.
Reblog Yourself, Seriously:
Okay, this sounds super uncomfortable at first, but it's nothing to worry about. People do this all the time, especially people with creative content to share. You're going to have to promote yourself sometimes, and there's nothing wrong with that. Go ahead and reblog yourself, even if you don't have anything new to add. People aren't online every day. People live in different time zones and log on at different hours. Dashboards get cluttered. With all of this going on, it can be easy for your posts to get lost. Don't be discouraged when this happens - just post it again!
Reach Out:
Writers. Love. Mail. Send some! Drop by a blog that's caught your interest and leave a message, ask, or comment. Try something like, "Hi! I'm a new writeblr, and I've just come across your blog. I really like it!" If you're feeling brave, throw in something along the lines of, "I hope we can chat about [insert topic] sometime." It can feel easier to leave messages like this on other new writeblrs, so check some out! There are always going to be lots of users in the same boat as you.
If you're not feeling brave enough to leave messages like the above, maybe it'll be easier to simply comment on their posts, OCs, or WIPs. I personally feel awkward when I try to compliment someone directly, but asking a question makes it easier. Leave someone an ask about one of their characters or projects, like, "[Project name] sounds really interesting! Where did you get the inspiration for it?"
If you're comfortable with it, just get the ball rolling with some interactions. Step back when you need to, and try not to feel pressured.
Ask!:
Really! There's no shame in a post saying you're looking for followers, mutuals, or writeblr friends. Lots of people are, so you may be surprised at the results it will yield! If you're looking for someone to exchange content with, ask for that. If you're looking for a group to chat with, say so.
Use Tags:
Tags are a major tool for navigation on Tumblr. It's how we find the content we're interested in and looking for. Someone finding your blog may come down to the tags you use.
Some common tags in the writeblr community include:
#writeblr (go figure)
#writeblr intro
#writing
#writers on tumblr
#new writeblr
#writeblr community
#looking for blogs to follow
Tags in this vein will put your posts in a pool of posts written by and read by likeminded blogs. Be creative if you want, but be accurate with your tags. (i.e. Don't tag a post as something it's blatantly not related to.) Pay attention to the tags other writeblrs use for additional ideas.
Add Yourself to Tag Lists:
Just about every writer on Tumblr is beside themselves with joy when someone shows even the slightest shred of interest in their work. We all love to have our efforts recognized and to feel heard, so if you want to make a connection with other writeblrs, you might find some blogs with WIPs you like and ask to be tagged in their original content. Most writeblrs are happy to see people asking to be tagged in a comment, reblog, ask, or message. If someone says they don't do tag lists, don't be discouraged - you still put yourself out their and spread some writer positivity!
Being tagged in a user's posts about their work will help you navigate to it quickly and easily without missing anything, and it opens a channel for potential communication. They may even ask to be tagged by you!
Repeat:
Making connections with other writeblrs is an ongoing process. Keep looking for and using different methods of connecting, and soon enough, you'll find your follower count growing, have bright writers appearing on your dash, and meet a few friends. Just hang in there!
Comments? Suggestions? Corrections? Additions? Let me know what you thought about this guide and if you have any ideas for future installments, which are coming soon. Happy writing, everybody.
