Pie Monday
On the Monday immediately preceding the Dalkeith Hiring-Fair in October (2nd Thursday of the month), Musselburgh celebrated a day known as Pie Monday.
To correctly celebrate Pie Monday everyone *must* have a hot mutton pie for tea, as simple as that.
It is meant to have started when a baker鈥檚 horse was lamed in Musselburgh as they were on the way to Dalkeith with a full cart of pies and something had to be done to prevent waste! They sold so well that the following year he was sold out before getting to Dalkeith and so it became a yearly tradition.
Musselburgh let it fall by the wayside and no longer celebrate hot mutton pies in October. They should sort that out!

Fisherrow Harbour and West Beach, Musselburgh.
Musselburgh, which was once just a small fishing village, is a short journey from Edinburgh city centre. The town boasts a historic racecourse, a tidal harbour, two beaches and what is probably the oldest golf course in the world, certainly older than The "Old" Course at St Andrews.
The Two is split in two by the River Esk, the south of Musselburgh as a fine old Tolbooth and Town Hall, the A-listed building dates from 1590, replacing an earlier building destroyed by the English during a period called The Rough Wooing when they tried to force Scotland into agreeing that Mary Queen of Scots to marry Henry VIII's son and heir Prince Edward. This campaign caused significant destruction to Edinburgh and much of southern Scotland.
The Rough Wooing lasted several years and Musselburgh again saw action in 1547 at Battle of Pinkie. Mary was sent to France a year later for her own safety, she spent the next 13 years there.
