Based off of a personal experience I had earlier last week. Sometimes I forget Christian holidays exist despite them being treated as the most important thing ever by the majority here. And I think Jon would do the same thing (I'm projecting).

Jon would absolutely dig deep and bring back his Muslim upbringing just to tell Martin that no don't worry he's not not eating because he's starving himself, in fact he's not eating cause he's fasting for ramadan

In my muslim Jon headcanon, the reason Martin thought Jon and Basira were a thing was because he’s heard Jon say “Basira” during his prayers multiple times, only to find out later that “Basira” means vision/foresight in Arabic and it was just part of the prayer Jon was reciting.

regarding whether or not statements that have been compelled are halal i'd say depends? i think that if it's a situation where he has no possible access to written statements and the Only Possible Option is to compel a statement, i'd argue that those are special circumstances and it'd be okay. this'd be similar to a situation if a muslim was living in a majority non-muslim country (especially somewhere rural, where traveling long distances to halal stores isn't practical). i was in that situation and my sheikh explained that in that situation, any meat (i.e fast food, grocery store) from permissible animals was safe to eat, based on the principle that while it was not sacrificed in Allah's name specifically (which it would have to be to be considered zabihah), it was likely still sacrificed by People of the Book and was permissible to eat. obviously with jon's archivist position he has plenty of access to written statements, but season 5 brings complexities that i'm too tired to think about at the moment. point is though, based on what was said here and some quick searches on my part, the islamic ruling (which i'm not sure what that name is) would be very similar to pikuarch nefesh, including the part where the compelled/beheld? statements are halal when they become the only option necessary for him to survive.

The Magnus Archives masterpost

Character: Jonathan Sims

Representation: Asexual, Biromantic 

Their Importance: He’s off-handedly noted to be asexual by his ex-girlfriend and what with all the horror going on there’s no time to angst or base plotlines about it (everything else I’ve read with canon ace characters make a huge deal of it so it’s a welcome variation for me). While he can be incredibly cold and detached (also hilariously socially awkward at points) and slides into very morally dubious territory as the story unfolds but it’s very clear this is nothing to do with his sexuality (the creeping supernatural influence and generally god-awful situation the heroes are in is not helping). Yet in the climax of season four, he rescues Martin from being consumed by The Lonely - it’s a bit complex but essentially he did it with the metaphysical power of love which is a plot I’ve never seen done with an aspec character. It’s a very heartfelt twist on the formula.

Character: Martin Blackwood

Representation: MLM

Their Importance: Again there’s a casual reveal with no sexuality-based plots or angst about it. He starts off mainly restricted to an emotional support/caretaker role which is a potential gay stereotype but he quickly becomes way more active with a host of strengths and tragedies of his own. He also reveals he has romantic feelings for Jon and accepts they’re unlikely to be requited (*at the time of submission). Unlike the many other things with unrequited love in it, this also isn’t a massive source of angst by itself which also goes against the usual” tragic queer” plotlines. Though the end of season four strongly hints that their relationship may be about to be upgraded (update: after this submission was sent into the blog, the character is as of now in a canon romantic relationship with a man). 

Issues: Rep-wise nothing, but you practically need an individual wiki just for listing the wide range of horror-related potential triggers (thankfully they outline them in each episode description). The creators have also strongly implied that there might not be a happy ending for all the heroes.

Note: The two remaining characters are under a read more due to their representation not being canon as of the general rules of this blog. I decided not to delete them off this post, but based on the information/responses I have, their names have been taken off the submitted characters list, and I recommend reading this post for the canon/fanon representation on the characters.

Character: Basira Hussain

Representation: WLW*

Their Importance: It initially looks like she’s going to be another generic cop who’s blind to the supernatural, but it quickly becomes clear this is not the case. In fact, she’s a total badass. More specifically she’s incredibly intelligent and thinks nothing of facing off against eldritch abominations that humans can barely comprehend, winning several bouts. There are still way too few female Muslim and Asian characters more action-y side of things. Again there’s so sexual or cultural angst and no suggestion that being a wlw and a Muslim* are incompatible.  While frequently brutal her undisguised devotion to Daisy is deeply humanizing (also for the podcast in general which can be very grim). 

Character: Alice “Daisy” Tonner

Representation: wlw*

Their Importance: She’s also pretty badass considering that she started off with no knowledge of the supernatural threats the Institute face and manages to survive several situations no human is supposed to. Her relationship with Basira is one of the few mundane, domestic and sweet aspects of this story which is a flip of the old stereotypes. 

Issues: Most of the “badass” moments described in this submission have been pointed out to be linked with police brutality.

Jonathan A.C. Brown is an American scholar of Islamic studies. Since 2012, he has been an associate professor at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. In 2014, he was appointed Chair of Islamic Civilization. He is the editor in chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Law.

Moaning, grieving is about relinquishment. Throughout our social media, our newspaper and twenty four hour news cycle there is continued moaning and grieving, the old is passing. I have moaned and grieved over the San Francisco I moved into nearly twenty three years ago; I run into guys, whom I knew in their twenties, come back to Polk Street, now in their 40's trying to relive lives that are no more. Recently someone sent me a photo of my days in prostitution in L.A. commenting, "You were a pretty boy," well that "pretty boy" is long gone. We always fight against relinquishment--if not queers, than Muslims, then immigrants, and after all of these we will find new candidates. We do not want to give up what we treasure. Easter laughs at the fear of relinquishment and opens the gate to the God who treats all equally, with love, without regard to boundaries. The Archives felt different after the attack. The upper floors were still busy, filled with people, clean and well lit, but the moment the elevator doors open into the archives, the silence hit them like a brick wall. The archives had always been quiet, but there was something different about it now, a pervasive wrongness that set Safaa’ on edge. Their first day back, they were the only one there, they hadn’t even seen Mr. Bouchard on their way in, though Rosie had handed them a folder of various paperwork he needed them to complete. Another assessment of the archives, a to-do list of things to check on, a list of known damages, a memo from the ECDC.

At their first archiving job, during their time in graduate school, there had been a flood. Their team had time to prepare and minimize the effects, but there had still been quite a lot of damages. Once the water had been cleared and the area deemed safe, they remember spending weeks in the archives, salvaging files, cleaning up, restoring what had been lost. As terrible as the event had been, most of Safaa’’s memories of those weeks were positive ones. Hours spent with their teammates, chatting, laughing, working together, huddling around damaged files to try and maximize their experience with salvaging and preserving paper.

The Archives at the Magnus Institute was the furthest thing from that. Their time assessing the damages and salvaging damaged case files was spent alone, in the dimly lit basement where the floor was stained with blood where it wasn’t covered with the shreds of files and loose papers. Martin wasn’t there to insist on bringing them coffee, Tim wasn’t there to talk with and distract them, Sasha wasn’t there to ask about computers or archiving. They almost considered waiting, taking time off until people came back, until there was someone else in the archives even if they would be too busy to speak. They could feel a dread that crept up on them sometimes, accumulated after hours of working alone in the silence, they could sometimes see a fog at the edge of their vision, creeping closer each day spent in the isolation.

It was on the second week, things changed.

When I first started the Magnus Archives, I saw that everyone was making fanart where Jon was brown skinned. And at that point, seeing brown skinned characters wasn't something common. I subconsciously headcanoned him to be Muslim like myself for s1, but then gave up on that headcanon afterwards. But I recently started reading a fic where he was stated as following Islam. It made me happy to see that I wasn't the only one who saw the potential :)

Anyways, I decided to draw Jon in Eid clothes bc I thought it'd look nice. And I was right! I based his clothes off my mom's last year Eid clothes, with a slight color change. I especially like his mehndi :))

But please ignore his feet, I still need practice

[The recording is filled with static and distortion that slowly ebbs away. As it fades, the faint beeping of a heart monitor is audible, along with faint voices, footsteps, and the soft buzz of fluorescent lights. The tape recorder is audibly set down and pushed across a table as the static finally stops.]

SAFAA' I trust you don't mind me recording this, Mr. Sims? I have my own sets of tapes and notes I think this should be a part of.

[Long pause, the ARCHIVIST sighs]

ARCHIVIST (wearily) That's... that's quite alright, Mx. Medina-Luna. I- (dawning confusion) I didn't think you would have a tape recorder with you.

SAFAA' Hm. Well, the tape recorders are never too far, so long as the Eyes are watching. In any case, I assume you are here for my statement regarding the infestation and subsequent attack of Prentiss and her worms?

ARCHIVIST If it wouldn't be too much. (sighs) I know it's been a long day but... I need to hear what happened. I already got the others' statement at the Institute.

SAFAA' My apologies, the paramedics thought this was best. I would offer to allow you to record after you've rested, but I doubt that interests you.

[Pause]

ARCHIVIST (half-hearted chuckle) You know me quite well...
