CHORUS MUSICUS KÖLN, DAS NEUE ORCHESTER & CHRISTOPH SPERING
BACH CANTATAS

Phil... Why did you help me kill myself? -wilburminecraft
I don't know.
I don't know. It was just... it was like suddenly I was outside my own head and watching the worst mistake I ever made. Like someone grabbed my shoulder and put the idea in my head instead of any basic, rational thinking.
I shouldn't have, Wil. I really shouldn't have. Your death was more accident than suicide, between the two of us. I keep calling it murder, but that's not true. You weren't meant to die, just the person you'd become.

The one thing Phil hadn't expected was honesty.
Maybe it ran in his family, the avoidance he'd come to expect; gods knew he'd left his son and friend both with dodges and omissions enough to dig his grave a few times over. Wherever it came from, honesty was a currency, and not one Phil would turn away.
"I'm your father," he answers simply, "there's nothing you could do to make me stop wanting to save you. I held you through nightmares you were too young to remember and I saw you off in tears. The only way I wouldn't be able to bear seeing you would be in your own blood."
But he'd killed Wilbur anyway, a sword-slash through the chest that pierced the heart and lungs both, made possible by anatomical knowledge only a scholar or soldier would have.
"Guess I didn't do too good of a job on that myself."
(liar, liar)
Phil leaned against the railing next to his son.
(His son? He should be sure, shouldn't need to ask, but after all this--after everything they've been through... he's not sure. Whatever Wil is, he's the closest Phil's ever going to get.)
"We need to talk about a few things." He refused to meet Wilbur's eye, instead staring out across the field into the middle distance. He swallowed painfully and sighed. "Why don't we start with the letters?"
There's a folded and re-folded letter tucked in his pocket. There's also a crumpled, nearly illegible letter next to it, but Phil's not in a place to read that one right now. The first letter, sure; even bittered by time and lies, the first letter he got from his son in a new land meant something close to his heart. The last was just a reminder of how they both failed.
"Why'd you lie to me?"
-- oblitusglacies
Wilbur had nearly forgotten about the whole letter debacle when he'd beseeched Phil to let him stay with him in his new arctic cabin. After years of pasting on a smile whenever Phil returned from his months-long disappearances, white lies were nothing more than a routine necessity, one he'd learned before he could count higher than one hundred.
Wilbur pressed a smile to his face, the motion unpracticed after thirteen and a half years without having to perform. He meant to explain with some metaphor about sending kids off to summer camp--something clean that would placate Phil and assuage any fears.
Instead, unwilled words spilled from Wilbur's heart. "I fucked up, Phil, yeah? I was handed the golden reins and crashed the chariot through the Earth." Wilbur swallowed. "I didn't want you to have to see me like that."
