Some snippets of my home-based music therapy sessions. “Music therapy is a research-based allied health profession in which music is used to actively support people as they aim to improve their health, functioning and well-being. It can help people of all ages to manage their physical and mental health and enhance their quality of life.” (Australian Music Therapy Association). When working with children, I follow the child’s lead, interests, and preference. Play is often the biggest part of a child’s life, and therefore my music therapy sessions are play-based and strength-based. Music is the catalyst to support the child’s play and overall development. If you are stuck on a problem, letting your mind wander for a bit may help you get unstuck. Research published in 2009 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggested that the brain areas that allow people to solve complex problems become more active during daydreaming. "Mind-wandering is typically associated with negative things like laziness or inattentiveness," lead study author Kalina Christoff, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia, said in a statement. "But this study shows our brains are very active when we daydream – much more active than when we focus on routine tasks." The findings suggest that daydreaming may serve to distract our attention from immediate tasks to solve other, more important problems, the researchers said. Did you know Australian trained music therapists are required to clock their CPD hours every year to upkeep their professionalism? In one of the categories, I can submit a song and a write up of how it can be used in clinical setting. I am glad this has brought back memories of how I used to love writing (literally writing with pencils) music on scores. The first time I composed a song from scratch was when I was at Primary 6. It was a song I wrote for my music teacher’s wedding.
