Hello!
This quarantine finds us reading.
I love reading as a method of escape from the circumstances all around me. I’ve loved reading ever since I was a young girl and contrary to backwards and supremely illogical public belief, Black Girls Read Too. My sisters, click that link to join a group/popular book club meant to shift the narrative surrounding black girls reading.
There’s something magical about spending your time in someone else’s mind and spending your time seeing a slice of the world laid out for you in the format another has created; there’s nothing quite like it.
I get high off of learning about different concepts and exploring unfamiliar or historical landscapes, and other things that I wasn’t around for, that play a role in the history and experience that we’re creating today. I love a BIPOC story. I love an autobiography or a biography. I LIVE for memoirs, essays, and short stories. I drink heavily from the cup of creativity that black storytellers, historians, and sociologists want to share with the global community at large. I also love individual stories of overcoming struggle and strife, stories about the resiliency of the human spirit. Stuff that inspires me to take a look at the many prisms of humanity.
During this pandemic, I’ve been thinking about how we will look back at this time and what we’ll say about how we spent our days and hours. Sometimes I laugh at myself because I can’t watch a TV show to save my life. Like — I love Netflix, but sitting down for an hour and watching a television show always proves so hard to me. I've left so many shows behind 2 episodes in due to visual over-stimulation. Nonetheless, spending three hours a night a reading four different books can leave me wishing I had more hours to cram into one day. It never feels like a chore. It’s a spiritual experience that fills me up like nothing else does. That's my dating dealbreaker, LOL! Can't just lay in the bed and read with me? It ain't never gonna work!
I am not a purist. As much I love the smell of a new book, my e-reader is my best friend. They see me scrollinnnn.. They hating... LOL! I find reading on an ereader the easiest way to keep track of all my notes, and to carry around all the books my heart desires, on my iPhone. It’s actually blessed. I open up Scribd or Libby or OverDrive or Apple Books or Audible or PressReader or Panels or KyBook or whatever and I dive in and swim. I swim through them chapters, turn over and do a backstroke! Before I know it — it’s 2:00 am and I have only 6 hours of sleep to get before I’m back at my work station, and then back on the floor of my room, reading.
Seeing how most us, ahem those of us with a will to live and not catch the Rona, have been isolating — I figure, why not pick up a hobby, or share one. I guess I decided that I wanted to write a little and share some of these notes and reviews on some of the things I’ve been reading with no one and everyone in particular. So here we are; I’ve started this blog to share my reading notes and thoughts and I’ve started another companion blog called @musicfordinner to share some songs and thoughts about the music that has been keeping me company throughout this pandemic.
Please feel free to reach out to me, especially it you're reading something dope. I’m always down for a buddy read.
I apologize for any/all typos in advance. I write from a place of passion and not perfection. ✨ I think passion is where the magic lives and perfection is where the magic dies so, I try to keep myself in the former and not the latter. However, I do realize that in relation to the aforementioned statement — sometimes you start waxing and getting lost in thought and stop making sense to everyone around you and I have been completely guilty of that. That’s my special sauce, yo either you can hang or you can’t hang!
I’ve been guilty of going off the deep end in my own head and hopefully we can do that together as we jump off of this literary and hoodreads, yes hoodreads, cliff.
See you in the pages!
Happy reading.

NOTEWORTHY SOUNDTRACK : TRANSPARENT I could spend a lot of time sitting here ranting about all of the things I loved about this show but since this is a music blog I will instead only speak to the absolute perfection of the soundtrack. The series is one that evokes such raw emotion and deep discomfort and the music does an incredible job at coupling the storyline and complexities of its characters. Do yourself a favor and give this soundtrack a listen.
Curated by Bruce Gilbert.  Track List below:
1. Razor Love- Neil Young 2. Mayla- Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes 3. Operator- Jim Croce 4. Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye-Bettye Saw 5. Distant Sures- The Cave Singers 6. Oh Sister- Bob Dylan 7. Miss Fortune- John Wesley Harding 8. Hey, Thats No Way to Say Goodbye- Leanard Cohen 9. Somebody that I used to Know- Gotye 10. Tube Sock Tango- Mucca Pazza 11. I'm Every Woman- Chaka Kahn 12.Glimpses- The Yardbirds 13.Don't Go to Strangers- J.J. Cale 14. The Ghost in You- The Psychadelic Furs 15. Power of Love- Deee-Lite 16. Dreamboat Annie (Reprise) - Heart

Noteworthy Album:
Def Jam Music Group 10th Year Anniversary Box Set In 2009 Def Jam Music Group released a 4 part box set to celebrate the release of their first album 10 years prior in November of 1995. The album includes a bunch of recognizable tracks along with a good amount of less well known tracks from artists like Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Method Man, Nice n Smooth, Public Enemy and more.  Anyone who knows my knows my taste in hip hop knows it dates back to the late 80s/ early 90s and virtually stops there so finding this 4 part set available to stream on Spotify has been a lot of fun for me. If you are into old school hip hop you should definitely check it out.
