"You're gonna be fine on the other side.."
Hiya!! I'm JoJo/Ratti or you may call me by some of my kins (Fizzy, Lydia, Niffty, Adrina, Sora, Lumine)
I am a Masc-leaning Nonbinary Bisexual FictoAroAce adult creative who really enjoys musicals and animated shows. I draw and write but usually don't have alot of free time ;_;
Interests/Fandoms
Bolded are things I'm fixated on currently! Italic is favorite in the series
• Beetlejuice (All media types)
• School of Rock (Movie + Musical)
• Hellaverse (Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss)
• Pokémon (XY, SV, BW, SWSH, SM)
• Fire Emblem (FE3H, FEH, Fates, SoV, Awakening)
• Legend of Zelda (OoT, BoTW, ToTk, MM)
• Chronicles of Narnia (Primarily movie based, PC and VoTDT)
• Ensemble Stars (Basic and Music)
• Harry Potter (All books but mostly GoF, OoTP, PoA)
• Pressure (A roblox game LOL)
• Hoyoverse games (Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail)
• Mouthwashing
+ More lol
F/O list
I am not comfortable sharing alot of my F/Os because they're selfships rather than ocxcanon and are very personal to me. Some are selective sharing though! My feelings about sharing are a spectrum and some F/Os I am more lenient on sharing than others, so don't be afraid to ask!
Some ships have dark themes that I will tag my posts correctly with when they come up (ex: tw age gap, tw incest) so if that's not your thing, feel free to block the ship tag or warning tag.
• Professor Sycamore (Pokémon XY) - Romantic
Ship tag: #🪻 Lavendershipping
STRICT non-sharing. He is very close to my heart and Sycamore selfship doubles are a trigger of mine.
Warnings?
None! Pretty vanilla selfship unless I talk about AUs
• Múspell (Fire Emblem Heroes) - Romantic
Ship tag: #🪻 Infernoshipping
Also Strict non-sharing, he was my first F/O and he's very near and dear to me.
Warnings?
None except some light toxicity between the two (It's Múspell, expect that lol)
• Ghetsis (Pokémon BW) - Romantic/Familial (Shipcest)
Ship tag: #🪻 JoGhet
Pretty selective sharing, he was my first shipcest F/O and he's very close to my heart aswell as my 3rd F/O.
Warnings?
Incest, abusive relationship in literally every way imaginable with Stolkholm syndrome, sometimes polyship with N in there to add extra incestuous spice and kid x adult. they are probably my worst selfship tbh and i love them for it
• Harry Potter (HP) - Romantic
Ship tag: #🪻 LavenderPot
Pretty strict non-sharing, It really depends tbh. I recommend asking me about it.
Warnings?
None! (They get pretty sad though)
• Sirius Black (HP) - Romantic
Ship tag: #🪻 FlowerStar
I'm quite lenient on doubles with Sirius actually! He might be the one F/O I'm closest to being okay with doubles on!
Warnings?
Also none (also pretty sad sometimes)
• Prince Caspian X (Chronicles of Narnia) - Romantic
Ship tag: #🪻 CatBlade
Pretty strict non-sharing, purely out of my own comfort because I'm not a big fan.
Warnings?
No warnings for the first half (Prince Caspian movie) but there is teen x adult in the Voyage of The Dawn Treader half
• Adam (Hazbin Hotel) - Romantic
Ship tag: #🪻 GuitarKitty
Depends. Selective sharing, feel free to ask!
Warnings?
Entirely depends on the AU, they can be pretty toxic/abusive but I also like having them be cutesy and lovey-dovey LOL
• Husk (Hazbin Hotel) - Romantic/Familial (Shipcest)
Ship tag: #🪻 Whiskerscest
Idrk tbh! Another selective sharing/ask F/O
Warnings?
Incest. Incest and alot of coersion (and probably teen x adult)
• Beetlejuice (BJ) - Romantic
Ship tag: #🪻 Beetleflower
Pretty strict but also pretty selective. Mutuals are fine tho ily /p
Warnings?
Literally every AU of them is teen x adult I cannot see Beetleflower any other way, sorry!!! (p.s, sometimes I polyship with Lydia (No ship name for all three of them but if you wanna help with one, be my guest! /nf) and my s/i and Lydia are cousins soooo... SUPRISE INCEST!!!!!!
• Dewey Finn (School of Rock)
Ship tag: #🪻 FlowerDew
HISS GO AWAY DOUBLES HISSSSSSS /silly okay but seriously, I'm a little lenient but pretty strict on sharing. Go ahead and ask but you'll probably get a no.
Warnings?
I have two versions of my selfship and one of them is kid x adult and student x teacher (the other one is a college student roomate AU) I mainly talk about the first one though.
• Striker (Helluva Boss)
Ship tag: #🪻 DesertFlower
Very strict sharing, I am very defensive over my snake cowboy HISSSSSS
Warnings?
They're very whump-y/abusive but in like a covered in blood making out after beating the shit out of eachother kind of way and not like a joghet kind of way
• Mammon (Helluva Boss)
Ship tag: #🪻 Dollarpetals
Half n half about sharing him, a little leaning towards no.
Warnings?
I haven't really fleshed them out yet but there's ALOT of exploitation and abusive dynamics (kinda like fizz x mammon) so yeahhhh
• Sebastian Solace (Pressure)
Ship tag: #🪻 CatFish
I lean towards no sharing but mostly because alot of his fans are antis :,3
Warnings?
I have two main AUs, and one of them is where JoJo is a teenager so uh Teen x Adult, coercion, blackmail and angst lol
• Dainsleif (Genshin Impact)
Ship tag: #🪻 TwilightFlower
It really depends, I'm really in the middle but a little towards no sharing.
Warnings?
Too many AUs but the main ones, one does have underage JoJo (who would've guessed)
• Wriothesley (Genshin Impact)
Ship tag: #🪻 WolfCat
No. A little lenient but mostly no.
Warnings?
Uh boss x assistant but sometimes i insert as Diona or Sigewinne so :P take that as you will since they have no real ages.
Before You Interact/What you should know about me
• I have no DNI! Anyone is free to interact as long as you are respectful, you are welcome to interact.
• I am proship/profic, anti harassment, pro para (pro consent, STRONG anti-contact on the big 3), Pro RPF (neutral on rpf selfship, idrc tbh) and pro kink.
• I tag stuff but I'm very forgetful so if you need me to tag something or I forgot to tag something, feel free to ask/correct me.
• I am very busy so sorry if I don't reply/get to something!
• Feel free to ask my boundaries on things! If you're not sure what I'm comfortable with, I won't be offended if you ask me even if it's something I don't like/am uncomfortable with!
• I like Harry Potter but I don't support JKR financially or in any way, I just like the concept and characters. JKR supporters/Terfs get blocked.
• If you can't read something I post/need an image ID, feel free to ask for a translation/ID.
• I freely block as I please even if I slightly don't like you for my own comfort
• Shipcourse is mentioned sometimes, if you don't wanna see that, feel free to filter #🪻 discourse (also used for general discourse but mostly shipcourse)
• I block Sh/Ed (Self Harm/Eating disorder) blogs as they make me uncomfortable as someone who is recovering from both of these.
Sorry this post got really long, it's MY profile and I MAKE THE POSTS REALLY LONG IF I WANNA!!!! /silly
I'm welcome to be mutuals with anyone! I just can't follow you from this account so apologies!!

Second polling about Gabriel Agreste. This time, it's for a Post-battle/Defeat theme according your choice. What music you would prefer for Hawkmoth's lament ?
18% of voters had chosen Firework from Katy Perry for the previous polling (also ranked 1st place).
Post scrpitum: A hug from Nathalie could be welcome to him.

This Week In BL - I Am SALTY
June 2022 Wk 3
A very disappointing week and I’m loopy on cold meds.
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying the most.
Ongoing Series - Thai
Triage (Mon AISplay) Ep 8 - the romantic growth in this show is really well done and natural, especially from Tol’s side, you can see him go from extremely wary to actively in love, it’s very well acted. He’s a complex character so I’m not sure I like him, but I definitely like THEM especially the domesticity moments. Also cute momentum on the side couple, SingGap. Gap is gonna have to get over uke tendencies and do the heavy lifting on this one tho, or nothing will happen. We have 5 more eps to go. This is a crazy ride.
KinnPorsche (Sat iQIYI) Ep 11 - Big Daddy interrupting a BDSM scene for the worse = a new one on me. Chay demonstrating my “please don’t make Thai actors cry” request. VegasPete was great. But frankly I probubly would have just preferred them as the leads in a Thai remake of Sei no Gekiyaku, and yes, I actually mean that. So now Kin’s dad killed Porsche’s parents and that’s the relationship doom drama or something? What is this nonsense? Thai BLs of Our Lives? Also BJ in a helicopter much? *grumbles about shark jumping in a corner*
Sky in Your Heart (Fri YouTube) Ep 3 - GMMTV putting the big guns in this one. Always happy to see TTJ. That said, Mek clearly can’t hack BL. I get no chemistry from these two. Not a very good kiss.
Check Out (Sat IQIYI) Ep 2 - basically this is giving me the messy cheating bisexual meets long suffering gay I was expecting from Love Mechanics but the plot is naff. Whatever.
My Secret Love (Sat YouTube Sat) Ep 4 - there’s nothing WRONG with this show, per say. There’s nothing right with it either.
Love Mechanics (Sun WeTV) Ep 1 - I am well over trying to find stuff that should be available international. What are they doing? It’s not like they lack for distribution options for BL these days when even China is playing in the field. Get your shit together. Why do they always squander YinWar? I LIED IT’S THERE. Messy cheating. Drunken dub-con. No sugarcoating. Ho boy. We in for a ROUGH RIDE.
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
To My Star 2 (Korea Viki) Ep 3-4 - So she is a childhood sweetheart ex? Bah. ANNOYED. That said, I did love the way she touches Ji Woo and he instantly checks with baby to make sure he’s OK. For someone who’s instinctive words always cut, Ji Woo’s physical instincts are always the opposite. He’s a great character and must be a lot of fun to act. But ho boy, Korea sure does like to D.W.E.L.L. Seo Joon’s sweaters = killing me softly. Also, catfight! Good musical score on this show. Poor Seo Joon he lost his foundation. Of course, this is going to be an exploration about how he is actually Ji Woo’s foundation. But obvs that’s poetry to come. Why is this show so painfully good?
Old Fashion Cupcake (Japan Mon Viki) Ep 1-2 - We’re gonna have to talk about something up front with this one. And it has to do with the fact that I’m a huge fan of the movie Tampopo. It’s got nothing to do with BL and everything to do with Japanese cinema. Why am I bringing this up? Because what this show does out the gate (and Japanese romance does a lot) is use the most intimate filming techniques (close shots, soft focus, etc...) to portray food and eating (not people/faces). Which means the food = a metaphor/stand in for sexual intimacy, repressed desires, and sexual awakening. I could not be more here for this showing up in a BL. It’s one of my favorite things about Japanese cinema. Add that to genuine mature characters? And I already love this show to peaces, and it’s going to be hard to be objective about it. Nozue + Togawa forever!
Senpai, Danjite Koidewa! AKA Senpai, This Can’t be Love! (Japan Fri Viki) Ep 1 - What is this with JBL opening on a kiss but not closing with one? The par de deux music mouse click thing was cute, and I like we get a JBL from both character’s POV from the start. And they were right, this is a Utsukushii Kare style worship only not whipping boy or attack dog more stalker like SCOY. (Uh oh.) All in all, this is a tense little show. I like THAT but I’m not sure i like this show yet.
Plus & Minus (Taiwan Viki *rec* & GaGa Fri) Ep 11 - Classic ep 11 DOOM. But it will all be okay. Cute side dishes were cute.
Want to See You (Vietnam YouTube) Ep 2 - It’s good, better with the brother character. You should read @squeakygeeky’s analysis of the pronouns, and how they shift, it makes for a much more comprehensible, significant, and flirtatious episode.
Love in Spring (Korea grey) Ep 9-10 - Can’t find subbed anymore. So I guess it’s on hold until I can or it gets distribution.
Kimi no Koto Dake Mite Itai AKA I Only Want To See You (Japan Thurs Hulu JP) Ep 1 - Not available inter.
Getaway (Singapore Mon YouTube) Ep 4 - The acting is just too terrible. DNF
Gossip
Korean gay novel Star Struck to be adapted into a BL. Looks bog standard messy gay long term pining friends-to-lovers, but novel is a good thing, tends to have more meat to work with then a manwha. I wonder if they will do a full length series?
PT is Love announced, this (like Peach of Time) is another Korean/Thai collab project. Looks interesting: moot pining besties, enter university together. investigate MURDER, fall in love. As ya do.
Looks like BounPrem (Until We Meet Again’s WinTeam) have a new project: Even Sun series. Looks like a tourist board promo adjacent thingy.
In Case You Missed It
There’s a new Vietnamese BL (or just gay) movie coming out which looks pretty good, called Tie the Not. LONG trailer here.
Dear Doctor I'm Coming for Soul looks like it’s being made available on YouTube. (Maybe only in part?) I liked this one, recommended with some reservations around an amorphous ending. Doctor and Reaper fall in love.
Next Week Looks Like This:
Unforgotten Nights starts on GaGa, thank fuck, clearly I need to get this snark out of my system. TRASH WATCH awaits.
This week’s best moments?
I love it when a show reviews itself.

Top 5 Musicals:
5. Jekyll & Hyde:
I can have little a Serious Musical. As a Treat. But yeah, I love PotO but J&H is my dramatic bitch musical. I just think the music slaps so hard, I really love it. The moment I got accepted into uni I blasted This Is The Moment to feel emotions, and of course at any moment I’ll be internally throwing a performance to Alive feeling my best evil self. Also, glad tiktok caught up with how fucking BADASS AND FUN Confrontation is, I perform to it in my room all the time, big fun.
4. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder:
Love me some fun musicals! Love me some murder! Really, what’s not to love here? GGLaM is absolutely hilarious and the music is so much fun as well (Also, I just love how one actor plays all of the D’Ysquiths, so cool!). It still haunts me that I had the chance to see it but I didn’t know about it so I didn’t, but oh well. I love lip syncing to Stop! Wait? What!? so much and i’m monty kin i too wanna have two gfs and go on a murder spree.
3. Beetlejuice
The Ghost with the Most! I had the absolute fortune of being able to go see the show with the OG cast, and what a fantastic night it was! I love having fun, and BJ was fun from start to end. The music is so energetic and catchy, the stage is KILLER and it was just so entertaining, even for my parents who don’t speak english and hadn’t seen the movie! Alex Brightman is a king, and oh my god Leslie Kritzer AN ICON.
2. Come From Away
Another musical I had the opportunity to go see, and I just...I love CfA. It’s such a feel good musical, it really makes you believe in the inherent goodness of human beings. It’s a wonderful story based on true events and I guarantee you that you’ll have a great cathartic cry listening to it. Me And The Sky is...just amazing, and the finale gives me goosebumps every single time. It’s incredibly powerful and just a little gem that deserves to be experienced.
1. Legally Blonde
IT REALLY IS THE MUSICAL TO END ALL MUSICALS, SORRY. It has it all: a great story we all know and love, music that’s incredibly catchy and fun, it’s engaging and captivating, and it’s just pure Broadway fun! I love it so much, I love how they make Elle and Emmett’s relationship so much better and deeper here (I LOVE THEM SO MUCH OH GOD), and it’s the perfect adaptation, honestly. Also after I got accepted into uni I blasted So Much Better, which is my go-to confidence boost song. BONUS POINTS FOR A PROFESSIONAL FILMING GODDAMIT FUCKING ELITIST PRICKS.

Chapter 30
The end of the year was quickly approaching and everyone from our group agreed on a strategic plan to meet up and head downtown to enjoy the New Year’s Eve festivities. Though I was thrilled to be bringing in the New Year with all my friends, I couldn’t help but feel remorseful throughout the day because I knew there was one important person who I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the occasion with… Trey. Unbeknownst to me, I wore every bit of my emotions on my sleeve and the one person in the world to read me better than I could read my own self was right by my side to notice… “What’s the matter with you girl?” Destani asked as she stood behind me, brushing my hair up into a slick poof at the very top of my head. I hadn't noticed that I’d fallen into a trance with the deepest frown to show for it “What? Oh… nothing.” Wrapping her hand around the end of my ponytail, she gently tilted my head to one side and peered down at me with a raised brow “And why are you lying? I see it all in your face… something ain’t right with you. What’s up?” Sighing, I stared down at my twiddling thumbs and silently wished that sometimes she didn’t know me so well. “Well, let’s just use you for an example. Let’s say that tonight you were going out with one particular guy to celebrate the New Year, but there was this other guy that you’ve been spending a lot of time with that you’re not gonna be with to bring in the New Year. How would you feel about that?” With a huff, she stopped what she was doing altogether and glared down at me “Well first of all, my attention would be all on the guy that I know I’ll actually be with and not the guy who I won’t be with… even though it’s quite sad to know that he’s not gonna be bringing in the New Year with me,” She shook her head sadly and shut her eyes momentarily before continuing on, “And second of all, I’m pretty sure Trey will be alright. Besides, you’ve been so wrapped up in him for the past month that you’ve barely had any sort of time for the one who really matter’s in this situation.” “Who?” I asked. “Chris!” “But that’s the thing Dez, I have been spending time with Chris since Christmas and I haven’t talked to Trey at all since then.” “Sy’Diyah, you don’t get it do you? You’ve been down with Chris since you were eight years old and now all of a sudden, some random nigga who looks good snatches your attention away. There is something wrong with that picture if you ask me… especially since Chris’s fine yellow ass is a single man now.” With a deep sigh I shut my eyes... I was beginning to feel the first signs of a looming headache “It’s not about how long I’ve been friends with Chris, Destani. It’s about the fact that he’s had all this time to make up his mind and make something happen with us, but has he approached me yet to tell me exactly how he feels? No, he hasn’t.” “So why does he have to be the one to make the first move?” She asked with an exaggerated smack of her lips. “What do you mean?” “I mean, I’m pretty sure you also haven’t told him how you feel so why are you sitting around waiting on him to make the first move? If you can’t handle seeing him gallivanting around in your face with other females, then maybe it’s time for you to make your move and go claim your man… shit, maybe he’s waiting on you.” With yet another sigh, I decided to clamp my mouth shut and claim defeat in this argument, because I knew that she was ultimately right. Once Destani was done with my hair, I headed for my closet to gather up my outfit for the night. “I hope you not mad boo.” She blurted. “No, I’m not.” “Well why are you so quiet?” “Just… thinking.” “You know what,” She started, following me into my closet, “New Year’s resolution for you… stop thinking about shit so much. It clouds your mind and you end up missing out on what’s really going on around you.” “Okay Dr. Phil, I’ll stop thinking.” I snickered as she rolled her eyes. -- Nearly half an hour later, Destani and I were dressed and waiting down in the den for the remainder of the group to arrive. We sat there, lightly conversing and watching the beginning of a few New Year’s countdowns on the television when the doorbell finally rang. “Hey hoes… oh, girl that purse is cute.” I could hear Destani’s loud voice from the foyer as she greeted Tameka and Nalay. “Hey Sy, you look so cute!” Nalay commented once she made her way into the den. “Thanks Nay, so do you.” I noted as I stood to greet her with a hug. Planting ourselves on the plush couches in the den, we engaged in small talk as we waited for the boys to show. As if on cue, the doorbell rang once more and within minutes everyone from our group finally stood altogether in the den, arguing over who would ride with who. Standing off to one side of the room, I held back my laughter as I watched them fuss amongst themselves and I gasped and nearly choked at the sudden feeling of a strong pair of hands gliding along my hips. “You riding with me right?” I heard his voice and smelled the sweet mint on his breath before I saw him, but I instantly grinned at the thought of that picture-perfect face. Without hesitation, I nodded in agreement and followed his lead as he grabbed my hand and led me toward the front door. “Where the hell ya’ll going?” Tameka asked as we passed her. “To my truck,” Chris replied without pausing to look back, “And whoever else is riding in it better come the fuck on.” The simplicity of his statement triggered a chain reaction and soon, it was decided that Destani and Rashad with ride with Chris and I, and BJ and Dontay would ride with Nalay and Tameka. We cruised along down the road to the tune of Meek Mill’s B-boy and Destani and Rashad entertained themselves in the backseat by rapping along to the song as loud as they could. I could feel the truck creeping to a stop and I didn’t even bother to look up to see if we’d made it downtown… my mind was completely consumed with the dilemma I’d discussed with Destani earlier. I twitched and immediately snapped out of my daze once I felt the warmth of Chris's hand hovering over mine. “What’s the matter?” “Oh… nothing.” I mumbled, glancing at him only to find him already staring right back. He stared for a few more seconds until the light became green then finally returned his attention to the road “You can tell me about it later.” I stared at him utterly amazed at his ability, much like Destani’s, to understand when there was something bothering me. It didn't take long for me to become immersed in the sight of him and in that instance, I could truly appreciate the relationship that we shared. I gazed at him, mesmerized by the way he wore his simple blue fitted hoodie and dark denim fitted jeans. He wore stark white Jordan’s to match the white fitted resting perfectly atop his head and the glistening watch on his right wrist accentuated the Charlie Brown chain resting peacefully around his neck… “Sy’Diyah!” I blinked back to reality and peered through the windshield to see that the entire group had exited the truck, leaving Chris and I as the only two still inside. “Huh?” I muttered stupidly. “We’re here now, come on.” He smirked. With a nod, I pushed my door open and climbed down out of the truck then carefully shut it behind myself. Chris moved swiftly around to my side and tossed an arm loosely over my shoulders, pulling me securely to his side “You wanna tell me what’s bothering you now or later?” “I don’t want to tell you what’s bothering me ever because there is nothing bothering me.” I countered. “Hope,” He uttered, nudging his hip against my side, “You know damn well you can’t lie for shit right?” I giggled and rested my head against his arm “Well then I guess I’ll tell you later.” -- “Ohhh, look!” I cooed, pulling away from Chris’s protective grasp to make a beeline directly toward a shelf full of New Year’s glasses in a quaint corner store we’d come across. He watched with twinkling eyes full of humor as I snagged a pair and headed for the nearest mirror to view myself. I snickered at my own reflection and instantly doubled over with laughter as Chris approached me with a matching pair of strobe light glasses. “These hoes are fly right? We should get em.” He stated with a wide grin. “Yes… you get those and I’ll get these.” “Cool.” He smiled giddily as he bit into the center of his bottom lip. The most feminine squeal fled his lips the moment he turned to faced yet another shelf piled with New Year’s hats, crowns, and a plethora of other items. By the time we left the store, Chris was sporting a pair of bright blue flashing glasses while I wore all white glasses and a red and gold tiara. We sauntered on along through the crowded streets of downtown Richmond and I could feel Chris dancing around behind me to the boisterous music blaring all around us. I looked up as the music grew louder to see an illuminated sign that read Club Illusion. I gawked at the brilliant sign of the club, failing to notice that we were moving directly toward the entrance. “Wait Chris, where are we going?” I asked once I felt him press a hand firmly against my lower back, ushering me closer to the club. “In here.” He said, reaching around behind me to point up at the sign. “We can’t go in here, look at the line. And I’m pretty sure it’s an eighteen and up club… Chris I can’t go in there.” Panic was beginning to set in as he aligned both hands against my hips, gripping tightly as he guided me directly toward the front of the line. Glancing up from the clipboard resting in his hands, the bouncer grinned immediately and held out a hand almost too eagerly to greet Chris “Aye, what’s up Kin?” Chris slid the glasses down from his face and stepped forward to return the handshake “What’s happening Bigga?” I stood at his side, curious by his exchange with the large black man. I wasn’t sure if I was hearing things or if this man was seeing things, but I was sure he’d mistaken Chris for someone else. “Aye Kin, you know the spot is poppin big time tonight man. You head on in my nigga, cause I’m tellin you,” He paused, leaning in closer to Chris with a sly grin, “The bitches is bad as hell and they already know you gonna be in the building tonight.” Chris chuckled along with this “Bigga” person and tossed an arm over my shoulder, pulling me into place at his side “Nah man, I’m not on that tonight. Just tryna bring in the New Year with my lady.” With an understanding nod, the bouncer smirked and winked in my direction before reaching over and unlatching the red rope leading into the club “I respect that boss man. You two enjoy yourselves.” I followed closely behind Chris as he walked through the open entrance and tried to tune out the merciless comments from the sea of females behind me. We journeyed through a small hallway leading to one of the main areas of the club and the deeper into the building we traveled, the more people lingered against the walls of the hall. I watched everyone around me carefully and rolled my eyes with irritation at the sight of nearly every single female in the near vicinity gawking at the guy latched possessively onto my arm. “Say lil mama, why don’t you let lil pretty boy go and come fuck with a real nigga?” An unfamiliar voice called out off to my side, but I prepared to keep moving into the club because I was sure he wasn’t referring to me. “How about you watch who the fuck you talking to bruh.” Chris barked, barely turning his attention to our bold intruder. “And how about you watch who the fuck you talking to, fuck ass nigga? I believe I was speaking to the beautiful young lady here.” The exchange happened quickly and before I knew it, Chris had turned his full attention to the guy and whipped me around to stand behind him. He eyed the man menacingly, lining his face up directly in front of his. Within seconds the once tense shoulders of the man relaxed and if I wasn’t mistaken… a strike of fear flashed in his eyes. “Or how about I stick my foot so far up your fucking ass it fills your big ass mouth so it can help you shut the fuck up, homeboy?” His tone hadn’t raised an octave, but the look in his eye was deadly and not to be questioned. “Aye man, I was just fucking with you dawg. I ain’t mean to disrespect you or your woman Kin… I swear I was fucking with you man.” He stumbled back away from us and once he was out of Chris’s arm reach, he moved full speed for the club’s exit. I stood stock still and frozen with fear as I watched Chris, unaware that for the first time I had encountered a side to him that would make more of an impact on my life than I could ever imagine... TBC...

| ITS COMPTON IN THE HOUSE |
Kendrick Lamar;
arguably Comptons finest son (what up Jayceon). I have been a fan since I heard the title track from his sophomore album, Good Kid m.A.A.d city.
I could lie and say I knew him from the jump, wax lyrical about his mixtapes and his first album, Section 8.0, but in truth I came to all that after listening to Good Kid m.A.A.d city, it was everywhere in 2012, it was named the best album of 2012 by BBC, Complex, New York and Pitchfork
It reminded me of illMatic, in so far as I thought it was an instant classic, and it took you right into the belly of the beast of the hood, the Compton streets where Lamar was raised.
Punctuated with dialogue laden samples, “Where yo Grama stay at?” “These kids ready to eat, bring back them food stamps” it was a tour de force, a combination of intelligent reflection of life of the disenfranchised and switched up with the chilled joints like “The Recipe” & “Bitch Don’t Kill my Vibe”, and the sultry Drake collaboration, “Poetic Justice” as soon as the subject matter got too heavy. An all-rounder if ever I heard it.
When I found the wealth of material that preceded this release, it was like finding a can of Coke in the fridge after a night out. Joyous stuff indeed.
His next release, to pimp a Butterfly was an anomaly, artistic progression at its finest.
Political consciousness, the complicated factors of black identity (not that I’d know) teased out over jazz (what?) in a multi layered musical continuity.
It is not immediately enjoyable, nor is it a ‘grower’ but it is important. Kendrick expands his sound and examines themes of straddling the thug life with the artistic life, which is seriously minimising it, that seems far more genuine (dare I say it) than Pac could ever do it. [1]
It engages the listener and has them scratching their heads.
Which is what art is all about. And haters of it will be silenced as it was just announced that to Pimp a Butterfly will be admitted to the Harvard ‘these are the breaks’ hip hop archive, joining Nas Illmatic, (see I called it) Lauryn Hills the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and ATCQ The Low End Theory. I actually think it might be a little premature considering there is only two hundred spots in total. But shur look.. this is it.
I could be here all day but this is all well traversed territory. What I want to talk about is his appearances.
The first that hit me hard was F**kin Problems with New York’s new wave g.o.a.t.s ASAP Rocky. Mmm mm, Daddy like.
Loathe as I am to be bumpin’ some superficial stuff like that I cannot deny its catchy AF, its pop rap and it is undeniably good.
It was until last year I reconsidered how often he contributed verses and a lot of it was non hip hop music, Sia, Taylor Swift Maroon Five to name but a few.
Parlaying his presence to a wider consciousness without diluting his integrity. It is a far cry from pops rent a rapper scene (reference any verse that Tyga, vomit face emoji, has appeared on) that we have been thus far subjected to.
The following are some of his lesser known collaborations that I think are worth a lend of your ear.
Sidewalks: The Weeknd
youtube
In an album laden with contributors, indicative of The Weeknds newly liberated flow that still contains some of his old secretive egotistical style, albeit somewhat watered down.
Kendrick combines a simple yet effective hook Say/Say/Say with a speedy flow that comes full circle referencing the cosmos to weave in Starboy. You mad clever son!
God is Fair, Sexy Nasty: Mac Miller
youtube
This is actually a deadly album, well worth checking out in its entirety. I am not a huge fan of Mac Miller, he is a little too poppy for me and I find his verses bland (although I said the same about Asher Roth and look how he turned that all around). This album is tightly produced with a psychedelic vibe, hip hop meets Stone Roses not a million miles from A.S.A.P. Rockys second album or Frank Oceans for that matter so I am definitely feeling it AND some decent appearances by Ty Dolla Sign and my new fave Anderson .Paak. This is dreamy Kendrick at his best, it reminds me of Poetic Justice, big fan.
Collard Greens: Schoolboy Q
youtube
This beat goes off, no bother to Kendrick he picks up the pace, throwing a little Espanol to make it interesting upping the arrogance to fit into Schoolboy Q’s self centred/ drug centred narrative and somehow it does not seem disingenuous.
The New Cupid: BJ The Chicago Kid
youtube
Chi town stand up! I only found this whilst researching this article. Crumbling soul over some old school horns, a little harp and tender ass drums all carefully and delicately put together over the sounds of “Cupids too busy in the club” using Raphael Saadiqs classic Oh Girl. Lamar is used subtly throughout the song repeating hook just audible enough to be certain it is Kendrick. He riffs on modern love As I play out the Commodores/my faith destroyed/My heart don't work, I'm unemployed/The feeling is void/don't know what I need/Some pussy, some paper/some counseling/Maybe some Henny, some weed.
This song has many elements that make it great but Kendrick plays a big role.
You’re welcome,,you all welcome! (KanYe voice)
