can they jam?
quick and dirty "analysis" of whether or not the fallout 4 companions can play an instrument. hold my hand and play in the space with me <3
(these are all headcanons. they might not be yours, but they are mine. if you find these upsetting, that's okay! you can scroll away, my feelings won't be hurt <3 okay, i love you have fun)
no i am NOT writing this instead of finishing the jude/preston diptych that i've been procrastinating on for three months. and actually how dare you for implying that. you're no longer invited to my fallout themed birthday party.
Ada. Can play little tunes by beeping at different frequencies. Would do this with her friends when they had music nights around their campfire.
Cait. Fabulous sense of rhythm. Always drumming some kind of beat.
Codsworth. Hums frequently. There's nothing in his programming that should allow him to do this.
Curie. Not only can she not play instruments, but she is criminally tone-deaf. She should probably stick to the lab.
Danse. Singing voice like an angel. Too shy to sing publicly. So if you catch him singing to himself, you'd better shut up and hope he doesn't notice you if you want him to continue.
Deacon. "I'll never tell!" (No, he cannot and he is embarrassed about it.)
Dogmeat. Howls on-key. Like, scarily on-key. Better-than-you-can-sing on-key. Are-we-sure-this-dog-is-just-a-dog on-key. I cannot stress how unnatural it is. Nobody acknowledges it when you ask them. Dogmeat wags his tail.
Gage. Used to play bluegrass instruments (dulcimer, fiddles, guitars, banjos, etc) with his brothers. He can also make instruments and can tune them by ear. He doesn't do either anymore.
Hancock. Knows some chords on the guitar but prefers to listen to music. He has a nice, deep humming voice, though.
MacCready. No. But he has a pitch-perfect whistle. Very cool!
Nick. Call him Billy Joel the way he's a Piano Man. Great with music theory and can read any sheet music. Human!Nick did not have this talent. It's important to me that you know that.
Old Longfellow. Virtuoso. Can pick up any instrument and is an instant savant. You will never ever ever ever see him do this. This is how he preserves what little sanity he has left.
Piper. She tried learning Hot Cross Buns on a hand-carved recorder when she was a kid and quit when she wasn't immediately good at it. No.
Preston. Was the Lead Harmonicist in Hollis' regiment. He still has it on him, though he hasn't played since Quincy. Can also pluck a tune on a guitar or banjo, but those are less convenient to carry with you when traveling long distances.
Strong. Cello. No, he will not elaborate.
X6-88. No and he looks at you like you're an idiot if you ask. (He secretly wants to learn.)

some things I love about the companions 💞
Ada; is best girl. She's a cool ass robot who gives me glue and doesn't judge me. No, this is not my "transformers prime permanently rewired my brain" bias for robots. At risk of sounding like a 12 year old boy, Assaultatrons are just badass designs. And she's blue!
Cait; is a lot funnier than anyone gives her credit for. Also, weirdly educated? For example, she wonders if Raiders like tunnels as a "Freudian" thing. Few people she'd have met would known about Freud, so she'd have to have gone and read about it herself. Also also, is on Danse's level of romantic sweet talk. Girl makes me swoon.
Codsworth; somehow hates the wasteland more than X6. His wording and tone is very optimistic but you can tell that, underneath his chipper facade, Codsworth is so fucking grossed out by everything he sees. Also, the only two companions he doesn't trust to keep you safe, are Piper and MacCready. Make of that what you will.
Curie; X6-88 (like, 10 years old) calls her unqualified and she (200ish) basically tells him to get the fuck back in the play pen
Danse; Sending his eyebrows to space by showing the smallest amount of care and affection. I'm pretty sure this man would die if someone asked if he was okay.
Deacon; talks a big game about being a liar, and being very good about it, but if you don't read that 'recall code' ASAP, he bugs you about it constantly because he hates lying to you. It's not even that you're being naive, he genuinely hates that he's being trusted when you were supposed to question him.
Dogmeat; my favorite thing about Dogmeat is that I'll spend an hour scrapping all dog houses in Sanctuary, make him a little area in my backyard with a house, food bowl, toys, a rug, and classical music, and he thanks me by getting up on my countertops to sleep, using my antique pie collection as bedding.
Gage; Wears a fake eyepatch and throws hissy fits when my army of sexy chads curbstomps his furries, Nepo babies, and Joker stans. This is entirely wishful thinking and I get why this didn't happen, but I would have liked an option to convince him "Hey, I'm coming back with my army to wipe out all these raiders, but I'll give you a chance to join me or leave since you also seem to hate these chuckleheads." I appreciate his shady convict uncle vibes. I would let him teach Shaun how to cheat at cards.
Hancock; takes mentats to feel "intellectual" when he has the second highest INT of all the companions. Also, his puppy dog eyes. "IM FERAL NOW" as he gets his ass kicked by a legendary god roach
MacCready; dork man. he has more cliche stock line jokes than Deacon. I unironically vibe with his taste in trailers, fucking LOVE leopard print (fake bc we don't fuck with wasteful animal hunting like that). He's a very cozy companion to travel with, for lack of a better description. Like if a thermos of soup was a human.
Nick; Nick is what I imagine Mac would be like as he got older—just a laid-back weirdo who wants whats best for you and will insult you so you understand that. I love his tacky ass agency sign. I wish you could put him in other clothes, because I need him in a bathrobe wielding a cane against my enemies. Just really succumb to the grumpy uncle vibes.
Old Longfellow; reminds me strongly of my old neighbor, an elderly southern gentleman who was a sniper in the military, had a chunky rottie named Baby, and once watched me play Fallout and gave his opinions on the design of the weapons in game. That man is now in Thailand with his girlfriend. I've never traveled with Longfellow but I'm pretty sure its a 1 to 1.
Preston; if you don't take Preston to Quincy, I don't blame you, because oh man, does he not have a great time there! Preston sounds five seconds away from snapping his gun over his knee and going for strangulation in Quincy. King shit.
Piper; I was pretty harsh to Piper but I love her gaslight gatekeep girlboss approach to her life. She's like an adult Junie B Jones. Piper has never had her shit together and is self-medicating with sugar harder than Hancock and Cait do with drugs. She's a cringefail woman. If Bethesda was brave they would have gone with her pixie cut concept.
X6-88; a blank canvas for me to go wild on with the fanon. But I love how he's just an asshole 10 year old murderbot that's scared of heights, thinks Power Armor is so cool he privately fangirls over Danse, is scared of children, and gushes over how awesome the Survivor is to his courser buddies. What a babe.

companions react to sole that used to be a ballerina? maybe they walk in and see them practicing their old moves?
Cait: “I could have used that flexibility in the Combat Zone.” Cait is impressed by Sole’s reach and ability to bend at odd, almost impossible angles. She incorporates that admiration into her flirtatious teasing towards Sole.
Codsworth: “Ah, ballet! What a civilized form of dance. It makes me miss polite society.” Codsworth happily spins whenever Sole pirouettes across the living room.
Curie: Curie had heavily researched ballet and other forms of pre-war dance. She nearly begged Sole to explain the meaning behind each position and routine. Not only is Curie interested in the technicalities of ballet, but the stories specific dances tell. She especially enjoyed hearing about Swan Lake.
Danse: Danse found ballet to be an adequate combination of culture and exercise. He was happy to watch Sole’s routines and listen to the meaning behind each dance. However, he didn’t enjoy Scribe Haylen walking in on Sole teaching him how to relevé.
Deacon: “Sole, I’m not lying when I say I will literally, literally die if you don’t teach me some moves.” It didn’t take long for Desdemona to ban the dance in HQ. Deacon and Sole kept knocking stuff over.
Dogmeat: Barks and jumps up on Sole with giddy, reckless abandon. Assumes Sole wants to play.
Hancock: “Where else are those moves good for?” Despite his initial suggestive comments, Hancock is actually interested in the elegance of ballet. He happily watches Sole perform at the Third Rail.
MacCready: MacCready struggled to conceal his giggling. “You look kinda ridiculous jumping around like that, Sole. New evasive maneuvers to dodge bullets?” Ballet eventually grew on him when Sole added music from the radio. He commented that the kids in Little Lamplight would have loved Sole’s performance.
Preston: He insisted Sole perform at the Castle to boost Minutemen morale. He thought ballet was something to be shared, not kept to Sole in an empty room.
Piper: “You should write a column on that dancing; how to stretch beforehand, what the different positions are called, how to pronounce pir-ou-ette.” Piper wasn’t kidding. She let Sole write a few stories on dancing and exercise, which sold an unprecedented amount of papers.
Nick: “Finally someone with class in this godforsaken Commonwealth.” Nick had memories -- not his personally, of course -- where he attended ballet with his wife. He loved catching Sole practicing their routines.
X6-88: “Stretching improves flexibility and reduces injury. Perhaps you could teach classes in the Institute.” He secretly just wants to learn for himself.

I have a Headcanon that X6-88 uses music as a means of some sort of therapy. Like he isn’t the best at explaining his feelings nor is he really comfortable with it really, but something about music just…works .

Fo4 Companions ideal Christmas
Maccready- Mac would wanna be surrounded by family, with lots of gifts for Duncan and good food to eat. He wouldn't really care too much about the location so long as it was safe enough that he could let his gaurd down and enjoy the holiday with his family
Hancock- Hancock would wanna be in goodneighbor. In the early morning he'd like to spend some time with sole opening gifts and spending time at the state house, and at night theyd head over to the third rail and throw a lavish party for the people of goodneighbor
Cait- She'd wanna go to Hancock's Christmas party and get totally wasted with sole. Besides that, she may want to exchange small gifts with sole but besides that she wouldn't really have any plans
Danse- Danse is used to pretending Christmas is just another day of work, so it'd take some convincing got him to celebrate. If sole was able to convince him he'd probably want something extremely lowkey at where ever sole called home. The day would consist of opening gifts and attempt at decorating a "tree" (He makes Charlie browns look luxurious) And eating a big dinner.
Curie- She'd want to be surrounded by all her friends, so at a larger settlement would be preferable. She would want to try every single tradition decorating the tree, putting up lights, opening gifts etc. Safe to say curie loves Christmas (especially the music)
Deacon- Deacon is about as aloof as they come, and the holidays are no different... in the past he'd spent some years at hq giving little things, some years he spent working like any other day, but if he truly had his way him and Sole would go far far away. Somewhere that no one knew them, Somewhere they could let theor gaurd down and just exist. That'd be his ideal Christmas.
Piper- She'd wanna spend the day in, with Nat and sole, eating junk, telling stories and opening gifts. It may seem lowkey for the usually eccentric reporter, but truth be told family meant more to her than anything else and that's what she wants to focus on this holiday season
Nick- He'd wanna get small gifts for everyone he cares about, Ellie, Piper, Nat, Sole, Hancock etc. This might be a stretch, but I think he'd really like to go caroling with all his friends. He'd also want to have an elaborate christmas dinner, and though he may not be able to eat, but he makes the best desserts anyone has ever tasted.
Preston- He'd wanna prepare a large feast for the settlers and get little gifts for everyone too, he'd spend the majority of the day making sure everyone else had a great day, and he wouldn't want it any other way
X6-88- He doesn't understand the tradition, but he would appreciate a mod for his gun or ammunition, and should Shaun be apart of the picture he might get him something small

fo4 companions favorite songs? thank u <333
Thank you for the request! I'm doing just all songs, not just Fallout 4 type songs if that's alright! And I kind of branched out into the music they like, also.
Cait: Naturally, Cherry Bomb by The Runaways. She likes Lil Peep.
Curie: Soldier, Poet, King by The Oh Hellos. Yes, yes, I know it's a popular song because of the quiz but it just makes me think of her.
Codsworth: Just sticks to the classics, the typical Fallout music style. But his favorite is definitely I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire by The Ink Spots.
Paladin Danse: I don't care what you say I REFUSE to acknowledge the fact that he only likes country. Lady Macbeth In Chains by Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine. I just think he'd really like it.
Deacon: WAP by Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B. Likes the soundcloud rappers, ironically.
Hancock: Likes soundcloud rappers, unironically. Would also listen to Megan Thee Stallion, but instead he branches out. His favorite is Tuned In Freestyle. Honestly though, really rocks with Labrinth.
MacCready: Surf Curse, 100%. His favorite is In My Head Till I'm Dead by Surf Curse, but also likes some other songs like Black Out Days by Phantogram.
Nick Valentine: His favorite song of all time is La vie en rose by only Louis Armstrong. Likes classical music more than anything. Refuses to listen to rap.
Piper: Definitely likes Current Joys and Lorde. Her favorite is A World Alone by Lorde. Sometimes listens to new music, but she prefers to stay with what she has.
Preston Garvey: Mr. Garvey my beloved, I know for a fact you listen to Mr Loverman by Ricky Montgomery and To Build A Home by Patrick Wilson late at night.
X6-88: Honestly, I think this guy would love phonk-style music. Like Lost by Crim3s. Sole made him listen to Cpr by cupcakKe once. Never looked at them the same after that.
EXTRA
Elder Maxson: Unashamedly listens to Viva la Vida by Coldplay on repeat.

Companion's favorite songs on Diamond City Radio?
Cait; Pistol Packin' Mama. It's a song about women killing people. What else would you expect from Cait
Codsworth; Way Back Home. Makes him nostalgic for before everything got nuked.
Curie; Accentuate The Positive. Catchy, upbeat bop about optimistic thinking
Danse; Dear Hearts and Gentle People. He likes country music, and that song's theme of, like...pride for your hometown, is a country classic.
Deacon; Once he figures out what it's about, Butcher Pete. Incredible.
Gage; Uranium Rock. It's closer to what I imagine his taste in music is like, closer to rock than the rinky-dinky, plastique sentimentality of the other songs on the radio.
Hancock; Magnolia stan.
MacCready; Also a Magnolia stan but is open to I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire. I like to think it was his and Lucy's 'song.'
Nick; Personality. It's a classier song, catchy, the vibes just match.
Piper; Atom Bomb Baby. Another headcanon, I like to think her dad called her Lil' Atom Bomb as a per name for her, as she was always a rambunctious spitfire as a kid.
Preston; Happy Times. Can you imagine why Preston might favor that song in particular 🙃🙃🙃
X6-88; Would never admit, but it's Right Behind You Baby. Why? Everytime he's stalking or chasing his prey, the target is running, crying, scared for their lives, and as X6 calmly follows behind, that song is quietly playing in his head. It's a private joke.

How would Fallout 4 companions react to seeing Sole dancing around in a skimpy outfit on stage as their performer if the Third Rail decides to do some big band thing?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mCwI9o7Zu6g
Cait: Cait threw her head back in laughter, and raised her beer towards the stage. "Yer mental, Sole! Absolutely mental!" She cheered Sole on the entire dance, and acted as a bodyguard whenever someone with a wandering gaze got too close to the band.
Codsworth: "Nothing wrong with letting loose, sir/mum." Codsworth wriggled at the corner of the room in a nervous dance. He was supportive of Sole, but wasn't too keen on the other patrons heckling his nearly naked master.
Curie: Curie gasped when Sole stepped out in their glittering yet somehow obscenely sheer costume. Magnolia had become quite the influence on her companion, and Curie would need to have a private word with her about redirecting Sole's focus on science. But Curie couldn't be anything but giddy for her friend when she saw how happy Sole looked on stage. Curie shouted for an encore after the song ended.
Danse: Danse's cheeks flamed red. He already didn't like Sole -- or any Brotherhood soldier -- hanging around the likes of Goodneighbor. But when Sole jumped around the stage with a wide, enthusiastic grin, Danse found himself smiling. It was nice to see his friend enjoy themselves after all they did for the Commonwealth. He still chastised them after the song, just to make sure Sole didn't confuse his amusement with acceptance.
Deacon: "Hell yeah!" Deacon stayed among the crowd, making sure all the attention was on his hopping, flailing and utterly ridiculous partner. However, he still cheered them from the sidelines like the rest of the raucous dancers. When Sole finished the song and left the stage, he slung his arm around their shoulders. "Next mission we're totally going as rock stars. Trust me on this one."
Hancock: Sole barely started their dance when Hancock jumped up on the stage to join them. He couldn't let Sole have all the fun. The two swung each other around like absolute fools until Sole ended up wearing Hancock's coat and he somehow had on someone else's hat. It was definitely a party neither of them would fully remember by morning.
MacCready: MacCready felt a mixture of amusement and secondhand embarrassment. He loved seeing Sole cut loose, but he didn't necessarily want to catch a glimpse of skin better kept under armor. "Don't hurt yourself up there!" he heckled as Sole did an impressive spin; their outfit lifting higher than MacCready would have liked. "And if you get cold, my duster is available for rent."
Preston: "Get it, General!" Preston was completely supportive of Sole jumping around the stage. It didn't necessarily advertise the Minutemen in the most wholesome sense, but Preston thought it was good that the Commonwealth saw Sole as a regular person. Maybe a half-naked, slightly tipsy person, but a normal Wastes survivor nonetheless.
Piper: "Goodness, Blue!" Piper tried to look away from Sole's exposed legs, but her companion kicked just past her face as the band's song picked up tempo. It was impossible not to notice just how free-spirited and scantily clad they were. "If you need me, I'll be at the bar." Piper was lying. She watched in amusement from the front row.
Nick: "For heaven's sake." The poor synth detective wasn't sure how to react to Sole's dancing. He loved the music, but didn't exactly want to see his companion half-naked in front of all of Goodneighbor. Nick settled on watching with a weakly encouraging smile, silently willing the dance to end.
X6-88: X6 didn't think this was the sort of future for the Institute that Father had in mind. He watched in bemused horror (quite an unsettling emotion) until Sole finally descended the stage. "If you don't put some clothes on, at least dismiss me so I can go back to the Institute and beg for a memory wipe."
