Foreign Language | Artūrs Šilovs
SUMMARY: A first meeting with a certain Latvian goalie, a surprise that leaves him thinking of you ... And an unexpected reunion thanks to injury. WARNINGS: So much fluff, poor Latvian language - if you're a Latvian native, please excuse me, I'm still learning. PAIRING: Artūrs Šilov & reader (f!reader implied). NOTES: This was the very first idea that I had, and it's been a brainrot ever since. This could very easily be a multi-part, because the brainrot is real. Okay so little Latvian lesson: 'sveiki' is an informal form of hello and 'piedodiet' is sorry. WORD COUNT: 2147 FIND PART TWO HERE
New job, new city — you were beyond excited to get started with your new life in Vancouver. It was a dream come true, a sports photographer for the Vancouver Sun. You’d be covering everything from soccer to basketball, and your personal favourite, ice hockey. It couldn’t have been better.
It had only been a few weeks and you were still pretty starstruck by the whole situation. The smile had rarely left your lips for everything felt so right. As you drove to the Abbotsford Centre, your music turned to loud as you sang along to your favourite song — life was good. And today promised to be another good day. You were helping to cover a story of the Vancouver prospects in Abbotsford and how they were developing within the AHL affiliate, while your partner would be interviewing players at the rink side and in changing rooms, you’d be snapping the shots of the training session.
It promised to be a lot easier than your usual days, training sessions were a lot more relaxed than game photography. Even with their game against playoff rivals looming, you knew it would be a calmer atmosphere than the alternative.
With the heavy camera bag upon your shoulders, digits scraped back your hair as you walked, tied back as you always did while working. Nodding across to your partner who stood waiting at the large rink doors, he held out a coffee to you, which you gratefully accepted with a quiet ‘thank you’. You two were close, like siblings — natural partners and you always delivered high tier work together.
“The boss wants some focus on the goalies, see what you can do, y/n.” He muttered as you walked, both sipping quietly at the hot liquid. From where you were, you could already hear the shouts of training, the crash of the puck against glass and the slapping of sticks upon the ice. It was a sound you knew and loved.
And as your partner pushed open the door, the bright lights of the rink lit everything up. You both moved quickly with a light tapping of both coffee cups in luck, your partner immediately gravitating to the head coach who lingered beside the boards, while you would weave onto the bench and begin your setup. Lens mounted onto the camera body, fixing your settings to this particular arena until you were happy with your picture. It was simply second nature now.
You stood beside the boards, camera switching from player to player with smooth motions as the camera clicked. Turning to each goalie, your camera would linger with the rhythmic clicking — you didn’t need to know all of the story, but a focus on the goalies was always a popular one. Players being called up to the NHL happened so regularly, it was hardly a story, but goalies? Now that got people ticking.
As the session progressed, you watched your partner question each player who came to the bench for water before they’d even had a chance to breathe. You would simply smile at each person, almost sympathetically, and do your job with the clicking of the camera.
Even as the young goalie skated over, angling toward the bench where you stood with a hand outstretched for a bottle, your lips presented a small smile as you waited for your partner to pounce. But as he was too wrapped up with Tolopilo, this goalie was left in silence … for a moment at least. You knew a little about him, of course. A young guy from Latvia, drafted a few years ago now, with a bit of a rocky start to the season. His eyes met yours as the blue and green mask was raised from his face, lips curled into a smile at the first glance.
You spoke without a second thought. It had been some years now since you ended things with your ex, but you’d spent a few years learning Latvian for them — it had been years since you had any reason to use it.
“Sveiki…”
Artūrs blinked. The smile on his lips disappeared as confusion was etched in its place. He’d been in Canada for a while now, with only the occasional passing player conversation to give him that little piece of home. He’d never expected this woman to come out with that.
“Sveiki.” The goalie quietly replied, leaning his weight forward upon the boards beside you. “You’re Latvian?”
You shook your head, a quiet laugh slipping through your lips as the camera lowered, your body turning to almost mirror his as you leaned upon the boards.
“I’m not Latvian, but my ex was. I learned some from when we were together.”
As you spoke, he watched you closely as the smile returned to his face. A smile that you couldn’t help but find contagious. He nodded slowly, thinking silently to himself before his blocker hand began to shake. The glove removed, his hand wiping upon his jersey before it was offered across to you with a grin.
“I’m Artūrs,” He spoke with a little more confidence, capturing your gaze beneath his dark eyes. They were easy to get lost in as you looked at him. “But this lot mostly call me Arty.”
“Y/N, it’s nice to meet you, Arty.” You hummed as your hand came to meet his, a slight look of amusing disgust at the sweaty hand of the goaltender. Needless to say it was enough to make the young goalie laugh.
Releasing his hand with a playful swat, you too would wipe your hand upon your jumper as he laughed. You couldn’t blame him, and you too found it funny, but a sweaty hand was not what you wanted.
“Piedodiet.” He spoke through the laughter, head cocking as he watched you. Your eyes narrowed playful in response to his apology.
“I’m not sure that I believe that you’re sorry.” You found yourself teasing in response, the camera growing heavy in your hands as it sat idle. If your partner looked over, it would look as though you were helping him with his job — but far from it. You were enjoying yourself, more than you realised at the time.
He gave no response, just the rising and falling of his brows. A cheeky grin at his lips as the hand returned the blocker, the bottle returned to it’s place on the boards.
“Will I see you around here more?” Arty called out as he took a few strides away from where you stood. He hoped, silently, that you’d say yes. That you’d be back to photograph and chat more. For whatever reason, he wasn’t quite sure yet, he wanted to see more of you.
It was your turn to stay silent, shrugging with shoulders and hands. You had no idea if your job would bring you back to the Abbotsford Centre, but you hoped that it would.
And as the training session came to end, your partner returned to you with a notepad full of notes and a voice recorder full to burst, you gave a lingering glance back to the goalie as he took his first steps from the ice, and met your eyes with a smile.
Months passed and you had often thought of the grinning Latvian goalie of the Abbotsford Canucks. Your job hadn’t taken you back to the little suburb of Vancouver, though you’d occasionally catch the games on TV. A little curiosity peaking as you’d remember the conversation with him — sometimes, you’d catch yourself smiling as you thought about it. You’d watch his games when you could and read the news in which he featured.
You couldn’t say that you missed him, you barely knew him, but you wanted to know him … You wanted to be able to miss him.
March rolled around, the end of the regular season was in sight and you’d taken the lead in photography coverage of the Vancouver Canucks for a while now — you’d become a regular at the Rogers Arena, and knew most of the faces of players, staff and partners. You’d even become friends with a number of the wives and girlfriends. You were a familiar face to all.
And you were one of the first on the scene, with your partner in tow, at the announcement of the press conference. Demko’s injury was the worst kept secret in the city, and you’d all been waiting for them to announce it. To know which lucky goalie was getting the call up from Abbotsford.
Journalists and photographers piled into the large room with whispers and nods of acknowledgement. Everyone waiting for Tocchet to make the announcement, and your heart skipped a little beat when he did … for the grinning goalie, Artūrs Šilovs would be taking up the role of back-up in Demko’s absence.
You wasted no time in getting down to the rink following the announcement, you knew that all the reporters would be clamouring for a word with the captain and the rookie goalie. As the flood of journalists began through the arena, the players were already leaving the ice with only the two goalies remaining with Clarkie. Many left to find the captain and coaches, while a few photographers, yourself included, would snap what shots they could of the two goaltenders.
Your stomach did a spin to see him again, the grin seemingly stuck with glue upon your lips — it had been months, surely he wouldn’t not remember you, you thought. But as his eyes glanced across to the wall of photographers, his gaze did linger upon you. Beneath his mask, he did grin. He’d spent months hoping to see you in Abbotsford, at his training or his game. It was a bitter disappointment when another photographer had been sent down in your place.
And as the nod was given for both goalies to leave the ice, little else mattered to him than making a beeline to you.
“Sveiki.” Arty immediately said as the helmet was raised, drifting on his skates just in front of you. Your smile spread instantly, quietly returning the hello with a hum. “I need to change, but please don’t run off.”
With a curious look etched upon your features, you silently nodded. It was the end of your working day anyway, you needed to sort through the photos of the day, but you could do that while you waited.
So sat upon a chair in the stands, laptop open and photos running through, you edited and submitted your best to your partner who would return to the office to write his piece. Gaze would snap up at the first sound of movement up the steps, it was strange to see him out of his goalie gear and in normal, casual clothing. A pair of jeans, a jumper, and glasses? There was something unexpected about that, but they suited him well. You liked the glasses' look.
“You didn’t come down to Abbotsford again.” He quietly said, the disappointment clear in his voice and on his face. And you felt the sting — but you also felt the twist in your stomach of excitement … he’d wanted to see you again, he’d thought about you.
“They moved me solely to these guys. I’m barely away from this rink now, Arty.” You sighed, hand closing the laptop which rested in your lap. You’d hold it there, fiddling with the corner as you thought. “I watched some of your games from home. I should’ve come down for one or two … to watch.”
“Do you want to go for a coffee, y/n?” Artūrs interjected, impatiently and abruptly. It was almost like he had to get it out before he could stop himself, and he was noticeably nervous as he waited for an answer.
You took a moment, watching him fiddle with the hem of his jumper as he waited — yet his smile never wavered. It was stuck, just as yours was.
“I’d like that.” You finally spoke, returning the laptop to your bag without breaking eye contact. The weight in his chest lifted immediately, a heavy exhale parting his lips as he nodded. You rose with a struggle, the camera bag always seeming to be heavier in that first moment, and Arty was quick to assist. His hand offered out, collecting the strap from your hand as it was slung onto his back with ease.
You walked from the arena together, both grinning wide with occasional glances at the other. A comfortable silence between you, it was simply a nice feeling to walk at each other’s side.
“Es priecājos jūs atkal redzēt.” He finally spoke, breaking the silence with words you didn’t quite know. Your Latvian limited to basic phrases that you learned to speak to your ex’s family during the holidays.
“What does that mean?” You whispered, leaning a little closer.
“I’m glad to see you again.”
And your heart skipped a little beat.

parents were very much present in his life, he never went without anything and actually was lowkey spoiled in a materialistic sense. so he lived a fairly privileged life in that regard. however, emotionally, they were absent. there was no close bond shared with them, other than their desire for him to succeed and bring honor to the family name. so they really don't have much of a relationship, other than an obligatory exchange of holiday and birthday cards.
music is a passion he both enjoys immensely but also leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. he's always been musically inclined, which his parents of course eventually exploited. piano lessons were tacked onto his schedule, which lead to concerts, and constant critique on his flow and ability behind closed doors. he dropped all that while he was in university, though he still dabbles in his own free time.
always led an active lifestyle, the importance of treating your body like a temple engraved in his mind from both his parents and his studies. he's an early morning jogger, and also frequents the gym as a more practical means to blow off steam. if you ever need a buddy to keep you motivated, he's your guy.
perfectionism in an attempt to overcompensate for his parents' neglect has been an inner struggle he's learned to cope with over the years. it mostly bleeds out into his work whenever he's feeling overly stressed, and sometimes interferes with his sleep schedule, but for the most part, he's got it under control.
he's also struggled with letting people in or being vulnerable, due to how he was raised, so he may seem a little detached or hardened around the edges. but deep down, he's a softie. if anything, he strives to show more compassion and understanding to anyone going through hard times, to avoid being anything similar to the cold demeanor he was destined to bear.
while he isn't overbearingly hypervigilant, he is very much a Dad to the community. repair work or basic car issues? he'll saddle up to lend a guiding hand. need advice with adulting? he's been through it, and he'll share his experience in hopes that you'll come to your own conclusion of the right choice. want somebody beat up? well, legally, he can not, but he can pop a lightly veiled threat and flex his intellect to intimidate.

Name: Emmit Hanson Age: 34 Town Occupation: Teacher / Supermarket Keeper Previous Occupation: Actor Redwood Resident Length: Newly Arrived Faceclaim: Chris Colfer
Bullet Points:
Despite being quite adamant that his father leaving didn’t bother him, the more it bothered him. He never told his mother this but he tried reaching out to his dad a few times - once on his sixteenth birthday and once to invite him to his wedding. Both times his father never answered.
A month before Darian was bitten, Darian found a young cat and gave him to Emmit as a gift. Emmit named him Jean. He was the last gift Darian ever gave him.
He has Darian’s and his wedding rings on his necklace and never goes anywhere without them.
Some of his more notable roles were in Music Camp as Kurt McKay for all six seasons, two seasons of Boston Hot as Tony Marks, Eye of the Storm as Carson Hale and Absolutely Gorgeous as Corey Dawes.
Biography:
From an early age, Emmit wanted to be a star. He loved music, he loved movies and he loved plays. When he was five his mother took him to see Les Miserables and he was head over little tiny Converse shoes in love with the lights and the show business. While his mother was incredibly supportive and did her best to get her son into acting lessons and music lessons, his dad was a real man’s man. When Emmit was eight his father left, having moved to Florida from Vancouver, but not before leaving signed divorce papers on the kitchen counter. Honestly, Emmit was fine with that. He never really got along with his dad so it was no skin off his back. His mother was worried, though, and had put him in counseling to work through his father leaving but even the therapist said that Emmit was a well-adjusted kid.
In middle school he got the star role in his first production. It was almost too perfect. Every production after he was either the lead or one of the main cast. The older he grew the more he started to really develop who he was and discovered his sexuality. To the surprise of no one, really, Emmit came out his freshman year of high school as gay. For the first few weeks he was bullied about it but much like the kid he was, he didn’t let it get to him. He was a tough kid and no one was going to get to him. After a while they gave up. It also helped that he became one of the most influential people in the Drama Club and his senior year, he was scouted by a talent agent who landed him in a few small movie roles.
Now Emmit loved the spotlight and he loved the movie business but eventually the fame started to become a bit too much. He took a break from acting to help with his mother who had suffered a heart attack. That’s when he met the handsome nurse who had been tending to his mom, Darian. The two hit it off rather quickly, although Emmit was somewhat new to relationships. Well, real relationships. He found joy in the romance and the dating and the sweet little things. They dated for a few years until Darian finally popped the question. The engagement was a lot shorter as they married in five months. Everything was perfect.
Until it wasn’t.
People were starting to come in sick and Darian had been working overtime at the hospital to help out. Emmit, having left the spotlight to support his husband, had been at home watching the news. That’s how he learned about the zombie outbreak. He quickly called the hospital to make sure Darian was okay. He was - thankfully. Darian came home and immediately the two began to plan on how to survive this. For a few months, everything was okay, but as the world changed and began to shut down, they knew they had to move. They couldn’t just hunker down and wait for everything to be okay. So they packed a few bags and began their trek South into the States after hearing about survivor settlements.
Eventually they found a small group that had been out hunting for their settlement and they took Darian and Emmit in. Everything was great, but eventually the settlement fell apart. The leaders were getting a little too totalitarian for their liking. So they left. Darian had a plan - they were going to head to the coast, find an ocean side property and build their own life together where they could grow old together. At least, that was the plan. A few weeks ago while on the road, Darian got bit by a Walker. Emmit stayed with him until he transitioned and when he did, he put him out of his misery. Now on his own, Emmit didn’t know what to do so he figured he would head further South and live the dream that he and Darian always wanted.

Inside Vasily Podkolzin’s Canucks journey: Country music, movie nights and lessons from the Sedins By Harman Dayal
Quinn Hughes was sitting in a dimly lit Seattle movie theatre on a Friday night, playing the big brother role. It was Vasily Podkolzin and Nils Höglander’s first-ever NHL road trip, so Vancouver’s star defender invited them out to watch a movie with him and Elias Pettersson.
Hughes was engrossed in the film. In the middle of the action, he glanced to his left and saw that Höglander was snoring, fast asleep. Then Hughes turned to his right — Podkolzin was knocked out too.
“I heard (“Dune”) was a great movie so I grabbed those guys and said, ‘Let’s go watch,'” said Hughes. “It’s very complicated. I would compare it to ‘Interstellar’ — even when a guy speaks English, he won’t understand some of the things.
“Those guys didn’t have a chance,” he added with a laugh. “They didn’t understand a single word. I don’t even know if they knew what the movie was about. Hogs slept for two hours and Podz was like 30 minutes.”
Podkolzin laughed thinking back to the memory. “Oh my God, it was horrible. I didn’t understand anything,” he said.
Hughes made it up by organizing a movie night later in the year to watch “The Batman,” which went much more smoothly.

Four Songs for a Ship
RULES: share four songs / pieces of music that represent your ship. REPOST. DON’T REBLOG.
001. Hozier - "Francesca"
If someone asked me at the end I'll tell them put me back in it Darling, I would do it again If I could hold you for a minute Darling, I'd go through it again I would still be surprised I could find you, darling In any life If I could hold you for a minute Darling, I would do it again
002. Florence + The Machine - "Wish That You Were Here"
And I never minded being on my own Then something broke in me and I wanted to go home To be where you are But even closer to you, you seem so very far And now I'm reaching out with every note I sing And I hope it gets to you on some pacific wind Wraps itself around you and whispers in your ear Tells you that I miss you and I wish that you were here
003. Vancouver Sleep Clinic - "Someone to Stay"
You've been fighting the memory, all on your own Nothing worsens; nothing grows I know how it feels being by yourself in the rain We all need someone to stay We all need someone to stay
004. Vienna Teng - "Eric's Song"
So we just hold on fast, acknowledge the past As lessons exquisitely crafted painstakingly drafted To carve us as instruments that play the music of life For we don't realize our faith in the prize Unless it's been somehow elusive How swiftly we choose it The sacred simplicity Of you at my side
Tagged by: Myself! I dragged it up from the archival depths =⩊= Tagging: You!!! Seriously, if you've got a ship and that ship has songs, I wanna hear them!! So tag me please!

❀ *◦ park jaehyung. cis man. he/him. queer. ⇝ hey, isn’t that song kitae? i think that the thirty-one year old from vancouver, canada works as a vocalist and the lead guitarist for the rock band nexu5 and temp instrument player at the scaredy cat club, but outside of that people describe them as pulling at the ties that bind, idyllic dreams crushed like rose petals, when the door closes - a lifetime of regrets return to you, never knowing the feeling of satisfaction, & silver tongue and silver knives. i hear they are facetious & irascible, but they are also known to be audacious & unreserved. consider giving them a visit at their home in delilah’s den gated community and get to know why they’re called the insurgent.

BACKGROUND
TWS for car accident, mental health, substance abuse, violence
song kitae was born in the beautiful city of vancouver, canada, to two renowned businesspeople; he would come to be the first in the family to have a musical aptitude. it wouldn't be long before his parents discovered the fact, as well as how he'd stray from their desired path... by a long shot. being old fashioned and strict, with a blue-collar type of vibe, their firstborn was a handful that they weren't expecting.
owning businesses in vancouver, as well as sunny los angeles, the family spent a lot of time between both cities. his childhood was fairly normal, but after some time of misbehaviour in school, lacking grades and general defiance, kit would be diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, only after several urges from the school’s counsellor to seek out a diagnosis for him. this, and the way the kid had an obsession with music, threw the couple for a bit of a loop.
it wasn’t until he was ten that his parents finally bought him a guitar, with the promise of him keeping good grades. as it went, he had a natural gift, along with his voice. though they weren’t keen at first, they agreed to put him in lessons—and he kept his promise.
two years later, they moved to south korea to help family who needed financial help. kit’s life continued on normally, until he was fifteen, when he was street cast by a scouting agent while playing the guitar and singing with his friends in a park. as you can guess, this excited him beyond belief. he had never built up the courage to audition, mostly due to his parents and how they’d react. after some discussion (and a lot of hesitation), they let him go on with the auditions, which he passed without any surprises.
his trainee life was challenging, and it would take some time for him to find his NEXU5 pals, definitely defying some of the rules and standards as he drifted along. the strict schedules were hard to follow, especially with his adhd, and there reached a point where he wasn’t sure he could keep up, or more so, if he even wanted to. however, the company being aware of his musical talent, came to him with a proposition: there was a concept they had begun putting together brought upon by another trainee named boo jonghyeon—their first band.
like clockwork, everything fell into place. the boys would form a quick bond with each other, their musical abilities coming together flawlessly. NEXU5 became everything, and kit was so glad that he didn’t give up. although the public was unsure about the concept, their debut was a success, and kit went on with a blazing passion, his natural boyish charm easily winning hearts.
and then came the bad. having spent the day out with one of his bandmates, jonghyeon, the pair had gotten into a fight, which to this day kit regrets initiating. the younger ended up leaving for their shared home early, putting an end to their activities, and kit would follow about fifteen minutes later in his own car. on the way back, he was rerouted due to a severe accident.
he’ll never forget the moment he learned it was their maknae in that totalled car, the panic attack and screaming that ensued burned into his memory. unbeknownst to him, not having looked at the rest of endless calls and messages, his bandmates were already on their way to the hospital—but thankfully, someone found him, helped him to his feet and got him to where he needed to be.
the primary focus was jonghyeon’s recovery. it didn’t take too long for people to start talking, as extremely disrespectful to the youngest’s situation as it was unsurprising. word got out that the two had a fight beforehand, and before the first week had even gone by, knetz would be blaming kit for the incident, and while the company did its best in removing everything negative people had to say about it, it quickly reached a point where they were swarming in person.
while the rest of his bandmates knew composure, song kitae had never been known for holding his tongue. on his way out of the hospital, he reached his breaking point, the slander and just complete lack of respect for his bandmate thrown in his face being the final straw. kit ended up snapping at the men behind the cameras, and all they did was goad as he yelled at them, and the recorded situation gone viral ended with three broken cameras and a broken nose delivered by yours truly. honestly? it was iconic of him.
it would result in him getting sued, but his lawyers and the company handled it efficiently, managing for the situation to be settled outside of court. kit had his issues with the kpop industry, but the way that everyone showed so much support provided comfort that hadn’t been there before. the press came to understand it well: don’t mess with kit and his band.
all in all, he’s a loveable little firecracker. individualistic and generally very friendly, but has his moments—his temper is something that’s relatively fragile. he hates adhering to the norm, despises it even, and won’t take shit from anyone, bosses and executives included.
HEADCANONS
social media fiend. don't ask him about his screen time on tiktok, it's an embarrassing amount. a very tech-savvy person; knows his way around the dark web and would probably jailbreak things for you if you asked him to. naturally, he also loves videogames, most of his downtime spent logging hours on his pc, either on stream or off.
has no problem telling someone if they're being a shitass or disrespectful in any way, he just calls shit out for what it is. the amount of times he's bitched about the industry and such is immeasurable, he's definitely happy to be away from the toxicity of the idol scope in south korea, which you'd probably hear about if you lend an ear.
big nerd. just a huge nerd. loves his collectables and trading cards and has spent an ungodly amount of money on these things. ask him about any of it and he'll ramble for hours and show you his collections if you don't stop him.
he can and will hold a grudge. doing him wrong or getting on his bad side is basically set in stone for life once it's done. this is something jonghyeon is helping him with... somewhat successfully? who knows. he's definitely trying.
fiercely protective. he'd break more noses for his loved ones if he had to.
HUGE CAT LOVER. babies his cats so much. those are his children.
hosts his own podcast biweekly, unplugged at 24:00: what the hell am i doing? recorded at midnight, discussing various and random topics, answering questions submitted by fans, etc. has guests on sometimes as well, and is uploaded on both youtube and spotify for audio listeners.
during his spiral when the world turned on him, he fell into substance abuse, a pit of self-hatred that he found his way out of with the help of his bandmates. it has been just over a year since he used, and he's very careful about not entering environments that could possibly trigger another relapse.
loud and chaotic. putting him and nikolai together is basically begging for all hell to break loose.

93 ’til infinity and beyond
Hip hop royalty celebrate 30 years of their iconic 93 ’til infinity album at the Hollywood Theatre - Post by Mark Lynch (aka Linchi)
Earlier this month I hobbled along to the Souls of Mischief gig at the iconic Hollywood Theatre on West Broadway having spotted the name of the cali hip hop group in lights on the retro cinema sign above the ticketing desk. I’d recently arrived in Vancouver, so this felt like the shot of nostalgia I needed, and having injured my knee during a close encounter with the Skytrain escalator the previous Saturday, I needed all the disseshowedo dopamine I could get.
After spotting the sign I scoured the internet for tickets only to be disappointed to find out both shows were sold out so I made a mental note to check in on the way back from beers in the city to see if I could cop a late ticket on the door. After a couple of pints in the hazy sunshine at R&B brewing I jumped on the 99 towards Kitsilano. I made a quick exit from the back of the bus, wadded through wafts of smoke and approached the doorman who agreed to let me in at face value. I grabbed a pint of lager and made my way to the front.
93 dates from 93 ‘til
Souls of Mischief embarked on a 93 date world tour in February of this year starting in their home of California before hitting the UK, Europe and a host of cities across the US. The jazz infused, tribe affiliated quartet of Opio, A-Plus, Phesto and Tajai burst onto the stage clad head to toe in matte black tour merch jackets and bucket hats to a warm and admirative reception with some of the more hardcore fans holding vinyl copies of 93 til’ joyously aloft.
After 30 years, and 74 of 93 gigs this year alone, the group showed no signs of fatigue as they energetically blazed through their uniquely laidback but punchy discography to a backdrop of trippy crawling visuals. The set was polished, engaging and packed with plenty of heart, humour and tales from 3 decades of grateful service to hip hop. The song selection and performance was tight, kicking off with 93 ‘til opener Let ‘Em Know and sliding between 93 ‘til classics and occasional back catalogue indulgences that included numbers from guests in attendance who were charmingly introduced and celebrated.
On numerous occasions I promised myself (and my knee) that I would stop bopping in the Hollywood theatres steep and sticky pit and take a seat in the cinema seats flanking the crowd but that never happened. I thought that as someone aware of the Souls of Mischief's influence, but only really familiar with their seminal album, there would be a lot of unfamiliar territory and dips through the evening but it was a testament to the groups stage presence and personality that as the show went on it became even more engrossing.
Hieroglyphic history lesson
About halfway through the night we were given a brief history of the roots of the ‘Hieroglyphics’, an underground hip hop collective made up of the Souls of Mischief and other Oakland acts including Casual and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, who A-Plus briefly teased was tonight's special guest - causing a collective gasp before revealing it was a rouse. The group called out key contributors and gave hieroglyphic hand signs before A-Plus led some crowd participation for ‘Batting Practice’ with the chorus ‘It’s like this y’all, it’s like that y’all, I swing a hieroglyphic baseball bat y’all’.
‘What a way to go out’
Looking around, the crowd were getting loose, but spirits were kept alive by the crews DJ who followed in the educational theme by mixing a medley of hip hop classics from Grandmaster Flash to KRS-One before a final scratch dropped in ‘93’ til infinity’ sending the crowd wild and teeing the Souls of Mischief up to use their hieroglyphic baseball bats to smash it out of the park. The group ended by graciously thanking everyone who has contributed to their story including the Vancouver crowd, the Hollywood Theatre staff and anyone who has enjoyed their music from those listening back in 93 to those born in 93.
After the final shout outs I made my way out and limped home with a full heart, reflecting on a night of homage to 30 years of the Souls of Mischief, 50 years of hip hop and a lifetime of gratitude from fans across the globe to an iconic group who created a song, an album and a cultural movement that has lasted the test of time, from 93 ‘til infinity.

Blossoming Sounds: An Interview with Jordana Delgado Jordana Delgado is a Vancouver born pianist, composer and singer songwriter who is making quite a stir through her poignant yet classy tracks. She followed various genres right from her childhood and the combination of the emotional style and the romantic prominence was the key to her music. Her most famous album is “Rainy Times” and many people were touched with the stories that she tells in the songs. The visuals of the album earned the short film over 430000 views on YouTube, showing Jordana’s side of creativity. Some of her successful releases include “Somewhere in My Memory”, “Autumn Leaves”, and “The Cradle” which got airplay on CBC Radio. Now, Jordana is ready to amaze her fans one more time with “The Dancing Pink Flowers”, the leading track from the new EP “Seasons”. The track is based on Bossa Nova with the original piano tune represents spirit of spring in a gentle, tender music. According to Jordana, the feeling when it comes to music is like ‘cherry blossom dancing gently through the soft spring breeze’. It has been quite a ride for the veteran artist who still has the capacity to leave audiences in awe of her depth and range. It is now time for Jordana to take us through her various pieces, her sources of inspiration and the meaning behind these profoundly touching pieces. Listen to The Dancing Pink Flowers https://open.spotify.com/track/6SaDoiKpQzjUqHv2ACUvBt Follow Jordana Delgado on Facebook Spotify Youtube Instagram Tiktok What is your stage name Jordana Delgado Is there a story behind your stage name? It’s just my real name ;) Where do you find inspiration? I find inspiration mostly in nature. There’s so much beauty around, it’s magical! I also find inspiration in live music. Seeing other talented musicians perform is very inspiring. Are you from a musical or artistic family? Yes, when I was born both my parents worked in the music industry. My dad was a touring musician and my mum was a booking agent. I grew up around artists and live music because of their jobs. What was the role of music in the early years of your life? Music has always had a prominent role in my life. My parents always had music playing at home and they brought me to lots of live shows. We would go to see my dad play if they played nearby. My dad also brought me to some of his band rehearsals. My mom, because of her job, brought me to every show for children in the city: music, puppets, theater, circus... It was only natural that I showed interest in music very early. Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry? It happened naturally. It wasn’t a decision that I made one day. I guess it was the musical environment I had since I was born. How did you learn to sing/write/to play? I started singing when I was around 3 and asked my parents for piano lessons when I was 4, but they thought I was too young. At that time, the only music education available was the old-school Conservatory of Music. They knew how hard that can be on young kids, so they let me experiment and have fun with music by myself. I sang, played the recorder, a little keyboard and the guitar. I picked up songs by ear. Those were a few years of experimentation and learning mostly by myself. When I was 13, my parents saw that I was really serious about music and signed me up for piano lessons and formal music education. I went to the Conservatory of Music and got my degree in piano performance in classical music. After that, and because I also wrote music, I got interested in jazz harmony, so I went to study with a private teacher. I also learnt a lot from playing in many different classical ensembles, world-music bands, pop bands… the more variety the better. Overall, one has to find the balance between experimentation and education because both are very important. What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform? Since I was exposed to live music from a very early age, I couldn’t say. It probably was one of my dad’s bands.
How could you describe your music? At first sight, people say it’s neo-classical music. I can see why they say that: it’s mostly piano solo music. However, I think it’s descriptive music. I tell stories with music and I use any musical element I need in order to serve the story. That means that I can have piano pieces that sound classical, others sound jazzier, others more Brazilian, others more pop… I use any musical style I need to tell my story better. I also write songs and I love to custom-make the piano part so the accompaniment describes exactly what the lyrics say. [caption id="attachment_55984" align="alignnone" width="1108"] I tell stories with music and I use any musical element I need in order to serve the story.[/caption] Describe your creative process. My creative process looks different every single time. However, there’s a common element: the storytelling. Music brings stories to my head, I see them! The process could start with an improvisation, or with me wanting to explore some music theory element, or trying to express a feeling or emotion. It could also start with a title, or a word in mind, or a specific story. The spark could be anything! Once the process has started, the story comes to mind and then I just follow it and see where it brings me. Sometimes the story requires me to do some research and sometimes the music just unfolds before my eyes in real time. What musician do you admire most and why? Regina Spektor. I fell in love with her songwriting many years ago. At that time, I only wrote instrumental music, and she’s the reason why I started to write songs. Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career? Of course, totally! I’ve played so many different musical styles: classical, world-music, pop, a cappella, singer-songwriter… and I enjoyed immersing myself in each of those genres for a while. I think that, in my music right now, you can hear little hints of everything I’ve done in the past. Your style keeps changing and evolving as reflection of yourself. Who do you see as your main competitor? Myself! I’m not here to compete with anyone. Everyone has a unique path and a unique voice and one should not compare themselves with others. I only compare myself with my past self. Am I improving? Am I moving forward? How can I do this better? That’s all I care about. What are your interests outside of music? I like to be outside in nature as much as I can. However, I also like reading, knitting and going to my ballet classes. If it wasn't a music career, what would you be doing? I’d still be involved in the arts for sure. I’d probably be working in the theatre world as a production designer or stage manager. What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music? How to balance the personal life with the artistic life. As an independent artist, you’re by yourself and you have to do all the work that usually requires a team of people full-time. But you’re alone trying to do everything which usually means that you end up working 12-15 hours a day. And it’s still not enough. It is very challenging to put limits to that so you don’t end up with massive burnouts every so often. Another big problem is smoke-sellers. Nowadays is easier to release music since we don’t need record labels anymore. However, there are many many people out there trying to take advantage of musicians’ dreams, asking for your money for services that achieve nothing and trying to scam you. There are also very good professionals that actually help you, but one needs to be very careful. If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be? Musicians shouldn’t play for free, ever! We actually spend more time and money in our training than a doctor or a lawyer. In addition, we need to buy expensive equipment, pay for studio time and a long list of other things. If you wouldn’t ask a doctor or a lawyer to work for free because you value their training and expertise, why would you ask a musician to work for free?
Why did you choose this as the title of this project? My new single is called “The Dancing Pink Flowers.” It’ll be included in my EP “Seasons” as a representation of the spring. When I sat to write it, the theme was clear: spring! And what is more representative of spring than the gorgeous cherry blossom? Pink flowers everywhere, dancing with the wind… so: “The Dancing Pink Flowers” https://open.spotify.com/artist/4i3QxmcySa4wHvj5tvj6GL?si=RD_46tUSTfOUjjG9JS3IhQ What are your plans for the coming months? Right now, I’m working on the release of my EP “Seasons” that comes out on July 26th and also on its release party. For the fall I have plans to finish a project I started in 2022: “The Rainy Times Story.” For those readers that are new to my world, “The Rainy Times Story” is a 9-episode short film that develops through the tracks of my debut album “Rainy Times”, and that has gained so far over 430k on YouTube. It is a very special story about the pass of time. I released 6 episodes between 2021 and 2022 but for personal reasons I had to stop it. Now, in 2024 is time to bring to life the last 3 episodes! Do you have any artistic collaboration plans? I do collaborate with other musicians in the Vancouver community but they are usually one-time collaborations for a specific gig. They’re usually very spontaneous. Right now, I don’t have any serious collaboration in mind. By “serious” I mean recording and officially releasing a song. What message would you like to give to your fans? I want to express my eternal gratitude to them! I do what I do thanks to the fans that support me and cheer me on along the way. I wouldn’t be here without them! THANK YOU!!
