to the beat of your heart
enhypen lee heeseung x gn!reader
wc: 1.1k
summary: heeseung meets you outside after avoiding you at a house party, when you just happen to call him the wrong name that throws your whole relationship into question.
warnings: non-idol au, alcohol/drugs mention, heeseung is toxic, kinda situationship vibes- reader and heeseung's relationship is unclear, no happy ending
a/n: First off thank you so much to my lovely @inkchwe for beta reading and helping me edit. I want to turn this into a sort of series of toxic enhypen so please look forward to that!!
toxic love series masterlist â° heeseung â° jay â° jake â° sunghoon â° sunoo â° jungwon â° ni-ki
THIS DOES NOT REFLECT THE ARTIST'S BEHAVIOUR OR ACTIONS - THIS IS A WORK OF FICTION
â°àż á»àż á»â§àż á»àż á»â°
Loud music reverbs through your body as you try to stabilize your breathing. Tapping your foot against the patio, you wait for Heeseung to join you outside. It's been 10 minutes since you texted him, seeing him read and not respond feeding into your anxieties. A million thoughts a second come and go too soon, building onto an already nauseous feeling. Music seems to match your rapidly beating heart as it bleeds out from the house.
It was only after you saw him coming through the door, a girl wrapped around his arm that really made your heart sink. Heeseung turned back and gave her a sweet smile, saying something that you couldnât quite make out before she lets go of him. She leans up to whisper in his ear, biting back a smile as he nods.Â
He finally turns to you standing a few feet away, not before allowing his eyes to follow the girl swaying her hips as she walks back inside. You clench your jaw as he walks up to you, a lazy smile playing on his lips, âWhatâs up sweetheart?âÂ
âWhere have you been? Iâve been texting you for the past 10 minutes trying to find you. And I saw you leaving me on readâŠâ Attempting to keep your voice stable, you meet his eyes. Heeseung gives a little shrug before pulling out his phone, âOh yeah sorry, was catching up with some old friends, must not have heard it buzz.â Quickly dismissing you, he opens a chat and replying to someone else.
âItâs fine I guess, Hee. Can we get going? Itâs already getting late and I have early classes tomorrow.â Suddenly his fingers stop typing, seemingly frozen as he stares at his phone.Â
âHee? Are you okay?â Stepping closer till your chests are almost pressed together, his eyes snap back to meet yours.Â
âWhat did you call me?âÂ
Heeseungâs eyes are now boring into yours. His stare feels so intense you unconsciously sink into yourself a bit. âUh I- I said your name?â
âYou didnât. You said something else. What did you say?â Heeseungâs voice comes out short and blunt.
He closes the distance, almost glaring down at you with how cold his eyes had become. The height difference had always been noticeable between you two but now it felt like he was towering over you, completely isolating you both from the rest of the world. The music buzzes into the background as your heart drums in your ears.Â
âHee? Whatâs wrong with you, I donât undersâ" "That's what's wrong, why are you calling me that?âÂ
The silence is deafening, suffocating.Â
âWhat are you talking about? Itâs your name! Am I suddenly not allowed to say your name? Seriously, I donât know what's up with you, but I just want to leave, so can weââÂ
âWe?â Heeseung stares down his nose at you, eyebrows furrowed, âListen you can go home if ya want, but I ainât leavinâ yet. I got some friends waitinâ for me.âÂ
It must be the alcohol, thatâs the only logical reason you can think of. Or maybe he took something? Heeseung was never known for his drug use, but maybe something happened tonight when you two got separated. âWhatâs going on with you? Did you take something?â Heeseung just stares down at you, eyebrows still furrowed. âWhatâs going on with you?â That question makes you stiffen up, his tone was ice cold as he looked through you. You had never felt so small in front of him.Â
The few months youâve gotten closer to Heeseung, heâs never been so cold with you. Always making an effort to be gentle towards you. It was one of the first things that drew your attention, Heeseungâs famously known âbambi eyesâ. Eyes that held such comfort, now holding you down in place under his gaze.Â
âHee?â It was barely a whisper but something glazed over his eyes. âWhat makes you think you can call me that?â It feels like something snaps in you. Nothing's made sense this entire night. âI donât understand what you mean! âHeeâ is your name!â Your chest aches as your throat constricts, emotions overwhelming your body.
Everything is whirling around too quickly, nothing is making sense.Â
âI never said you could call me that. Why are you acting like youâre allowed to?â A cool breeze blows through you, the music from inside still pumps through your veins. âAre you being serious right now Heeseung?âÂ
His eyes widened for a second seemingly taken aback by your reaction. âI told you why are youââ âTold me what?! That Iâm nothing to you!â Tears flood your eyes but you refuse to let them fall. Itâs a misunderstanding.
âSo all our time together was nothing? Everything weâve said, done for each other, nothing. You canât possibly be saying that.â Your breathing gets labored as he cuts you off.Â
âI told you at the beginning of us that I donât want anything serious, yet you were the one who didnât listen. How is that on me?âÂ
It feels like a bucket of ice water was just dumped on your head. Goosebumps rise across your arms. Looking up at him trying to meet his eyes, Heeseung looks past you.
How could he say that so casually?
A choked sob escapes you as tears streak down your face, chest squeezing all the air out of your lungs. It sets a sense of emptiness in you. Nothing. You were nothing to him. All the time spent together, the quiet whispers of romantic feelings, intimate nights together.Â
Nothing.Â
Everything you gave for him, crumbling before you.Â
He feels too awkward to look at you, drumming his fingers on his jeans waiting for something to happen, for you to say something. But it never comes. Heeseung never expected this reaction from you, he told you that he didnât want anything serious, it's really not his fault if you caught feelings.Â
Looking up as Heeseung stood stiffly in front of you, refusing to acknowledge you.Â
Your chest rises and drops quickly, trying to calm your breathing. You will yourself to not let him see you cry over him. Whispering out, one last plea to him. âHeeseung look at me, pleaseâÂ
Heeseung looks down meeting your eyes, those soft bambi eyes looking back at you. Those eyes you fell so in love with, now causing the burn of regret and hatred within you. âYouâre heartless Lee.â Your blunt tone catches him off-guard as you push past him, making your shoulders bump as you return to the party. You allow yourself to get lost in the drunk bodies dancing to the heartbeat of the booming music. Eyes slide shut as bodies surround you, the air heavy of smoke as the music drums on, leading your heart beat.

anyways i read the acotar series and it's the most godawful, horrendously written piece of ya fiction ever and the portrayal of faeries is downright disgusting cause babe those aren't faeries those are just really pretty people who you gave magic and slapped some cool features and called it a day. your know what ACTUAL fae are??? terrifying. otherworldly. ethereal. they break humans norms in a other-species way not should-be-a-convicted-felon way. look at holly black's books. the cruel prince portrayed fae so well, they were terrifying, they were ethereal, their disdain for humans was so well expressed not just left over racism from a 500 year old war and it was also wonderful fae love story because cardan and jude â actually screw it that essay will have to wait and rhys and feyre can't be on jurdan's level if they tried â but my point is that her portrayal of fae is just... immortal humans and then everyone hypes her world building up... BABE WHAT WORLD BUILDING. WHERE. the courts are never expanded on. do they have separate languages? religions? cultures? what does their traditional clothing look like? what does their traditional music sound like? what are their folktales? and i get it it's tricky to expand on this for seven courts but like we don't even know this about the night court or the spring court aside from a few dancing scenes and a few events. like aside from the solstices and starfall, what other events do they have? do they have any at all ( they should cause fae adore revels)? i just can't there's so much wasted potential in acotar it makes me mad
and all the lesser fae < high fae + prythian resembling britain and hybern resembling ireland ( honest to god this is creepy ) + extreme misogyny that is never fixed and the main male leads being misogynists themselves + women of color are plain and not as pretty as white women + the infantilization of pregnant women and reproductive abuse + the fucking faerie segregation that happened when hewn city civilians couldn't get into or access services from velaris... like i could go on and on. but i despise the series except for the first book because it's such goals, even if it had errors and i only even read all the way till the end cause 1) i just... kept hoping it'd get better (it didn't) 2) queen nesta archeron and my bbg lucien
so uh in short to everyone who recommended me acotar i don't trust you anymore
#ê°Â âż ê± â rose.#anti acotar#acotar#anti sjm#screaming#it's 4am and i am SEETHING cause i just remembered Mr. Everyone Hates Me Because I Am A Bastard đ„ș literally told my nesta that#she couldn't have sugar on her oatmeal and she could 'eat what he gave#or eat nothing' it's not the exact quote but he basically told her to eat his approved diet or starve#UGHHH FREE MY GIRLLL

10 Fandoms, 10 Characters, 10 Tags
Thank you so much @idle-brit for tagging me!This was lots of fun :) đ
My tags: @delyth88, @elymusplant, @galaxythreads, @chemical-processes. No pressure to answer, of course :)
1. Loki (MCU)
As much as I love everyone on this list, there is absolutely no competition for number 1. Loki has been my favourite character of all time for nearly 6 years now (because clearly the best time to join someone's fandom is after they've just been murdered), and is showing absolutely no signs of being replaced anytime soon. I have a Loki blog, for god's sake. The brodinsons are my favourite relationship in any kind of media, ever. I love them so, so much. Loki's a million different things and feelings, all at the same time, all fighting with each other, which makes for a wonderfully complex and nuanced character. Also, he's hilarious. Look at that eye roll. This is a man who hates his life, which makes me feel better about mine. Thanks, Loki.
2. Klaus Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy)
As will become obvious throughout this list, I love me an emotionally traumatised crazy person. Klaus is that. One of the characters who makes me laugh the most, ever, show-stopping dress sense, and a bucketload of unresolved trauma which goes largely ignored by Klaus, the other characters and the narrative itself? It was love at first sight. Their banter with the other characters, especially Ghost Ben (rip) is one of my favourite aspects of the show. Here's to hoping that Klaus won't be getting the Allison treatment in season 4!
3. Pippa Fitz-Amobi (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder)
I binge-read the entire AGGTM series earlier this year, and instantly fell in love with it. Pip is one of my favourite protagonists ever. Impossibly clever, compassionate, obsessive, badass, and a teensy bit unhinged. What's not to love? I would die for her. I'd say that I'd kill for her, but I think she's got that covered. I think she's written in a very realistic way, firstly as a genius 17 year old girl who doesn't really know what she's getting into, and later as a haunted individual who wants to stop investigating but can't. The way she politely knocks on people's front doors to dig up their traumas, accuse them of murder and all-round ruin their lives is everything to me. She is my blorbo. I am so, so excited for the show to come out, and I'm sure that Emma Myers will do a wonderful job as Pip!
4. Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games)
One of the best-written characters, in one of the best-written series ever. Reading from her perspective is such a delight- she's endlessly suspicious of everyone around her, constantly on survival mode, trusting very few people and relying on exactly no one (to begin with, at least). She's a random teenage girl, from the poorest district, and she wins the Hunger Games. She's so mentally unstable that she has to be sedated, and still she's made to be the face of a rebellion. She's rude, and kind of unlikeable. She adopts all the weakest tributes, at risk to herself, knowing that they won't win. She's doomed to fail by the narrative. She's the it girl of 2010s dystopian YA fiction. Jennifer Lawrence is an amazing actress, who does a beautiful job portraying the depth and conflict of Katniss in the films. The themes and social commentary of the Hunger Games is one of its (many) strong points, and I am so so glad that people are talking about it again, because it is my favourite book series out there.
5. Mitchell Pritchett (Modern Family)
I have no idea what to say about this man, I just love him. He just like me fr. What an icon. Impeccable music taste. I've started saying, "no my god" now, and nobody understands what I'm talking about. Even in a sitcom, my favourite is the one with issues that he refuses to talk about or fix. The episode where he's trying to hide that he dressed up as spiderman makes me cry-laugh. Claire's speech at his wedding makes me just cry. He's not a perfect man, but he's certainly better than everyone else.
6. Shin Tsukimi (Your Turn to Die)
My favourite cringefail loser! I said Katniss was doomed by the narrative in a metaphorical way. This idiot is actually doomed.
No but in all seriousness, I do really love him. Before the beginning of the game, he was just a relatively normal young man- but, when confronted with the inevitability of his own death, he made himself into a monster to survive. He has a violent vendetta against the local badass teenage girl, who is traumatised as hell already and does not need Shin chipping in as well, thank you very much. I love his relationship with Kanna, his biological sister; how he uses her, manipulates her, and still cares for her so much that he dies for her with a smile on his face in the Emotion route. Conversely, in the Logic route, his actions are a direct cause of her death, and I just love how much YTTD hates siblings. I hope that his past with Midori is explored more in either a mini-episode or the final part of the game, because I find it sooo interesting. I'm super excited to see whether he actually has no chance of survival, or whether he makes it out, against the odds, on one of the routes. He's a bit useless, so I won't get my hopes up.
7. Rue Bennett (Euphoria)
I think it goes without saying that Euphoria has its issues, lol. Sam Levinson is an idiot. While a lot of the show (especially season 2) feels shallow and like it doesn't care about its characters, Rue's storylines always have heart and depth and I am so invested in her arc. It's no wonder that Zendaya won 2 Emmys for this role, because her acting is phenomenal! Rue feels so real to me, in the way that she's trying so hard to stay sober but she falls down and relapses time and time again. Recovery isn't linear, but she's getting there, and I adore her with all my heart. Her relationships with Lexi, her mother, her sister, and her sponsor, Ali, are my favourites, and the healthiest for her, in my opinion. Her brief friendship/ romance with Jules may have kept her more solidly sober than anything else in the show, but Jules (understandably) cracks under the pressure of Rue's mental health, and can't be there for her. Rue needs to heal for herself, which she appears to be doing at the end of S2.
8. Max Mayfield (Stranger Things)
Duffer brothers, please just let her be happy.
Despite only being introduced in Season 2, Max has, in my opinion, had the best character development out of everyone on the show. Her growth from someone standoffish, rude, and uninterested in the group (maybe I'm being a bit harsh. She was, like, 12) to someone who is willing to risk her life to help her friends and Hawkins means so much to me. The scene in "Dear Billy" (S4, Ep4) where she escapes from Vecna remains my favourite in the whole show and will probably be burned into my brain forever. Her relationships with Lucas and El are very sweet, and some of my favourites in Stranger Things. Her final line in S4, after all her struggles over the season, being that she doesn't want to die literally breaks my heart. I hope she gets some degree of a happy ending in the final season. She was my first profile picture when I joined this hellsite, and I love her a lot.
9. Anne Shirley (Anne of Green Gables)
The shenanigans that this girl gets up to never fail to make me laugh. The bit where she accidentally dyes her hair green and then has to hack it all off makes me feel awful for her, but. it's hilarious. Sorry, Anne. Her friendship with Diana is so sweet but also so funny to me because they really are the most chaotic duo of the 1880s. The scene where Anne accidentally gives her alcohol instead of fruit juice is so mortifying but so, so funny. Amidst all of the insane situations that Anne gets into are a lot of really heartwarming moments and relationships. Matthew and Marilla adopting Anne, even though they wanted a boy, because she's so endearing and alone in the world is probably what made me who I am today. I still haven't gotten around to watching Anne with an E, but I've heard it's amazing. I look forward to watching it when I have the time :).
10. Daphne Blake (Scooby Doo)
My first ever favourite character! Another one who I don't have a tonne to say about. She's an icon, she's a legend, and she is the moment. She has done nothing wrong, ever. She knows martial arts, so watch out.
Honourable mentions: Thor (MCU), Finnick Odair (The Hunger Games), Gretchen Weiners (Mean Girls), Jake Peralta (Brooklyn 99), Maurice Moss (The IT Crowd), The Eleventh Doctor (Doctor Who), James (The End of the F***ing World), Ali Abdul (Squid Game).
If you read all of this then thanks, and have a great day!

âïž#txt blog (Blogs of my life that involves books and cute things)
đ·#txt tbr (Books I wanna read)

Books I like:
King of battle and Blood (+book 2, I need book 3 asap!!) (Scarlet St Claire)
The Scarlet Veil (Shelby Mahurin)
Crave (6 book series, Tracy Wolff)
Butcher & Blackbird (Brynne Weaver)
Daughter of the Moon Goddess (Sue Lynn Tann)
Haunting Adeline (HD Carlton)
The Sisters of the Salt Series (Erin A Craig)
Tropes and themes I usually enjoy:
Enemies to Lovers (actual enemies to lovers not just that they donât like each other. Give me the âIâm gonna wipe out your nation if you donât declare me kingâ type enemy. A real enemy)
Dark Fantasy
Touch her and die
Vampires, Vampires, Fairytale Creatures, plus a bit more Vampires. (Not the twilight kind tho, not for me)
Morally grey characters, and that can go for anyone. Man, woman, child, anybody.
A character that will be brutal to the world but will worship the ground their partner walks on (yes please)
Smut. I do like me some smut. But my god please actually have a good story and character development. If itâs ONLY smut then itâs boring as hell.
Fictional Asian inspired stories/Asian fantasy
I started reading again in December last year. I hadnât read since I was a teenager. I lost interest in the genre of books I was reading but didnât have the money, resources or knowledge for acquiring new books. I didnât know what I wanted to read because I didnât know how to find what was available. So I stopped reading for likeâŠ.10 years. Maybe a bit more. I found the transition from YA books to adult books jarring. Especially coming from a sheltered and strict home. But itâs safe to say Iâve officially found what I like, on a complete fluke trip to the bookstore with my sister in law.
I do enjoy other things such as gaming, music, tamagotchi collecting, 3d modelling, studying languages and binge watching shows. But since this is my book blog, thatâs what I focus on heređ

2023 Favourites
In no particular order. This is content I've read and watched in 2023, not necessarily content released in 2023.
Books
1. Notorious Sorcerer by Davinia Evans: fantasy with some m/m. The protagonist travels to other planes for alchemical ingredients and ends up having to learn greater workings. I love the Byzantine vibe of the worldbuilding.
2. The Daughters of Izdihar by Hadeer Elsbai: fantasy with some f/f. Two women, a waterweaver and an earthweaver, join a women's rights movement. I love the Egyptian-inspired worldbuilding.
3. Reforged by Seth Haddon: m/m fantasy. This King/Paladin novel has a surprising plot. The magic system is very original as well, I especially like the music part of it.
4. The Buried and the Bound by Rochelle Hassan: urban fantasy with some m/m (YA). The hedgewitch protecting the town teams up with a boy cursed to forget his true love and another one trapped as a bondservant.
5. [Spanish] Lazos de Sangre by LR Jeffers: m/m urban fantasy (erotica). This is a series about werewolves and big cat shifters, usually angsty and hot.
6. [French] Meute by Karine Rennberg: urban fantasy with some m/m + another protagonist is aroace and uses sign language. This is a novel about building your own werewolf pack. I think this is my first time encountering 2nd-person narration in French and it works surprisingly well.
7. Cascade by Rachel A. Rosen: science fantasy with mlm and wlw protagonists + no romance. An ecological disaster has freed magic. In Canada, the Party works with a wizard in order to try and save humanity. I love the intricacies of the plot, which skilfully mixes politics, science and magic.
8. Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell: m/m science fiction. Telepathy, my favourite trope, done by one of my fave authors! It was even better than I expected.
9. The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei: science fiction/murder mystery with several non-binary major characters. 80 people from all around the world embark on a one-way interstellar voyage. As they're all required to get pregnant, they're obviously afab, but several are non-binary, with mentions of a trans man.
10. Forget Me Not by Alyson Derrick: f/f romance (YA). This is a very romantic novel about two girls dating in secret until one gets amnesia. I enjoy this trope a lot.
TV shows
1. Good Omens: fantasy with queer protagonists + some f/f. I love the book and I love the adaptation. Season 2 is original content, but it's faithful to the spirit of the novel.
2. Shadow and Bone: fantasy with some m/m (YA). This successfully mixes the Shadow and Bone trilogy (that I haven't read) and the Six of Crows duology (that I have read and enjoyed).
3. Warrior Nun: fantasy with some f/f. Nuns literally fight against demons.
4. The Power: superpower fiction with some f/f + a trans woman and an intersex man. Teenage girls start developing an electrical superpower, which makes them safer from men.
5. NĂŒ Er Hong: GL wuxia. This c-drama is a quick watch, with 27 episodes of 2 minutes. I love that these short webdramas always have more or less the same actresses.
6. The Devil Judge: dystopia/thriller with BL vibes. This k-drama has a tight plot and fascinating characters. There's a girl in a wheelchair and the rep is well done.
7. Naughty Babe: BL romance/murder (attempt) mystery. This Thai drama is the sequel to Cutie Pie, except that they switched up the main pairing and the secondary pairing. I think it's possible to watch it on its own.
8. Wedding Plan: BL + GL romcom. This Thai drama has mlm-wlw solidarity, which I hope to see more of in the future. There are also cameos from the BL couples from Love in the Air.
9. Oh! My Assistant: BL romcom. This hilarious k-drama is about a het porn webtoon creator and his assistant. Despite this topic, the drama is not explicit.
10. Welcome to the Lesbian Bar: GL contemporary fiction. This k-drama is a quick watch, with 5 episodes of 6 minutes. In each episode, 2 customers come have a drink and chat with the owner.
Movies
1. Barbie: fantasy that is so gender! This was such a big surprise coming from Hollywood.
2. Nimona: fantasy with a protagonist who is a trans/enby allegory + some m/m (YA). I haven't read the graphic novel, so this was more depressing than I expected (it deals a lot with discrimination), but still an excellent movie.
3. Wingwomen (Voleuses in the original French): action movie with a sapphic protagonist + f/f vibes between the other two. I love heist movies all about women.
4. Kill Bok-soon: action movie with some f/f. This Korean movie has interesting cinematography. Note that it's very violent, though.
5. Red, White & Royal Blue: m/m romcom. I love the book and I love the adaptation.
6. Anything's Possible: m/f romance with a trans female protagonist (YA). This is a very positive movie, about love, art and nature.
7. Fanfic: m/m romance with a trans male protagonist (YA). This Polish movie is sometimes dark, sometimes fun.

Just wanted to say, I absolutely adored the podcast and am currently on my first relisten of it now that it's all complete! <3 Loved the music, the characters, the voice acting; everything was fantastic from start to finish!!
I have to ask.. any recommendations for books inspired by Welsh mythology? Alternatively, are there any books you might recommend that would fill the Camlann-sized hole in my heart? đ
Hello hello! Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm so glad you enjoyed the series!
Specifically books inspired by, rather than books that are - so I'm going to recommend you some fiction:
Spear by Nicola Griffiths, which specifically explores queer themes in urban fantasy Arthuriana, and uses a lot of Welsh inspiration
Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy (it's great and iconic, though mostly uses Norman sources)
The Pendragon Cycle by Stephen R Lawhead, which is a great classic high fantasy series, though has a slightly abrupt ending due to publishing drama.
The Owl Service by Alan Garner - this is a YA novel but does use the Mabinogi as a direct source!
Here Lies Arthur by Philip Reeve. It's a YA novel but one of my absolute favourites, and very much displays Arthur as deeply flawed, as well as including some subtle queer themes.
The Magician Trilogy by Jenny Nimmo, these are childrens books but also the most heavily inspired by Welsh mythology I know.
I hope this helps! And thank you so much again for listening to the show!

TYO Essay
A while back, I mentioned I wrote an essay for my previous uni course where I used TYO as a source to look at the early 1980s. @a-a-a-anon expressed an interest in reading it, so here ya go! The quality of it is seriously iffy (I was 18/19 when I wrote it and had no idea how to actually write or reference academic essays yet, and just the quality of the writing makes me cringe a bit). There was also more I wanted to say but couldn't due to the word limit (don't remember what these other things were now). Despite all that, the lecturer liked it, and it was cool I got to write about TYO for uni.
The Young Ones as a Cultural Source for Early 1980s Britain
Although today in Britain the future often feels uncertain â the global pandemic notwithstanding, Brexit is still looming on the horizon â the Britons of 40 years ago doubtlessly felt similarly, albeit for different reasons. In the early 1980s, the threat of nuclear war was palpable, as the existence of Protect and Survive[1] attests to. Nuclear war paranoia influenced British culture in the 1980s, with bleak examples such as the BBC film Threads (1984) and Raymond Briggsâ When the Wind Blows (1986) still remembered keenly today. Both fictionalisations of nuclear war featured material from Protect and Survive and highlighted the message of contemporary nuclear disarmament protestors: no one can win a nuclear war. Of the less apocalyptic issues, unemployment hit 3 million (about 11.7%[2]) in 1983 â for comparison, in 2019 it was estimated to be at 1.281 million (about 3.6%[3]). The Thatcher administrationsâ efforts to break from the post-war consensus and embrace neo-liberalism created divisions in society. Yet, amidst threats of nuclear war, mass unemployment, the decline of British industry and the growth of individualism, a cultural revolution in comedy dubbed âalternative comedyâ was fast taking hold in Britain â and in much the same way Thatcherismâs impacts can still be felt on society today, so too can alternative comedyâs.
Running for 2 series (12 episodes in total) on BBC2 between 1982-84, anarchic and slightly surreal sitcom The Young Ones epitomised the break between older styles of comedy and the new wave. Although The Young Ones has been called ground-breaking and classic, it is also now regarded as somewhat dated for its jokes pertaining to current events. Therefore, its scripts are an interesting source for an insight into the time in which it was produced and based: early 1980s Britain.
Firstly, it is important to understand what The Young Ones actually was. Written by Ben Elton, Rik Mayall and Lise Mayer[4] and with additional material provided by Alexei Sayle, it followed the misadventures of four vastly different university students at the fictional Scumbag College in North London. Whilst the four were never seen doing anything remotely akin to studying, it aimed at being representative of university life, students and the squalor they lived in. The show was not a conventional sitcom in that it did not pertain to a family and it featured a musical act in every episode so that it could be classified as âlight entertainmentâ, as the BBC had no further budget available for sitcoms at the time. Because many of its principal actors came from the stand-up comedy circuit, there was an emphasis on excitement and unpredictability over discernible plots and many memorable scenes featured characters injuring themselves and others, destroying bits of the set and crashing through walls, as well as randomly interspersed and unrelated cutaway gag segments. There was a cartoonish level of slapstick violence, swearing and toilet humour, which appear milder to todayâs palate than 40 years ago.
British audiences were divided by The Young Ones mostly along age lines, with younger viewers engaging readily with this new style of comedy and older viewers seeing it as unnecessarily vulgar and silly. Indeed, the characters that had been transplanted from their actorsâ stand-up routines were deliberately disgusting, exaggerated caricatures and horrible to one another. Mayall himself played wannabe lefty anarchist Rick, who frequently came to rather explosive blows with the violent punk medical student, Vyvyan (played by Mayallâs comedy partner, Adrian Edmondson). Also featured was badly done to, depressed hippie Neil (played by Nigel Planer) and the mysterious leader and straight man of the group, Mike The Cool Person (played by Christopher Ryan, the only one of the core cast without a comedy background). Sayle too appeared in every episode as either their hated landlord Balowski or a member of his family, where he would deliver a short stand-up monologue to the camera. The showâs title (and opening theme) was derived from the Cliff Richard song of the same name, as Mayallâs character was a huge fan.
The Young Ones took on the issues of its day, perhaps none more so than the episode âBombâ. âBombâ uses dark humour to address fears over nuclear war by having an atom bomb land in the charactersâ kitchen at the start of the episode. Even before the characters deal with the unexploded bomb, the script is already hinting at the theme of nuclear war in this cutaway gag sequence, featuring a family on a packet of cereal:
FATHER: Would you two shut up and keep smiling? Weâre supposed to be the ideal nuclear family!
GIRL: Post-nuclear, more like!
Not only was this segment ridiculing the âideal nuclear familyâ that was promoted by the Thatcher governments â none of the characters posing as a family get along at all and the âfatherâ reveals himself to be gay, thus exposing the lie that there is truly an âidealâ family â it also managed to slip in a quick gag about nuclear war. This reflected a genuine belief by many at the time that nuclear war was coming, especially amongst the young.[5]
When the main characters finally become aware of the bomb in their kitchen, the script offers this response:
NEIL: Iâm going upstairs to get the incredibly helpful and informative âProtect and Surviveâ manual! Nobody better touch this while Iâm gone!
This reference to the Protect and Survive manual, which at the time and retrospectively has been regarded as useless in the event of an actual nuclear attack, appears for the purpose of ridiculing it. Having the character of Neil act as though the manual could help deal with something as serious as an atom bomb in the kitchen employs sarcasm as a critical tool. Protect and Survive featured suggestions such as painting the windows of the house white in order to deflect the heat from a blast, which The Young Ones also satirised:
RICK: Neil, can you lend me five- What are you doing?
[NEIL is reading his survival manual while painting himself white with a paintbrush]
NEIL: Oh, painting myself white to deflect the blast.
RICK: Thatâs great, isnât it? Racial discrimination, even in death! What are these? [indicates a few lunchbags on the table]
NEIL: Sandbags!
The misinterpretation of the manualâs instructions, as well as the substitution of items deemed vital for items found in the house, reflects the feeling that most British households were simply unprepared for a nuclear attack and stood very little chance of survival. This is compounded later in the episode, when the four main characters resort to hiding underneath the kitchen table as a means of escaping the blast of the bomb â something many had resorted to in air raids during WWII but which was drastically inadequate protection against an atom bomb. This episode also portrayed the nihilism in British culture over nuclear war â a nihilism that can be found in other cultural sources, such as The Smiths song âAskâ[6] â through the character of Vyvyan, who spends much of the episode attempting to set the bomb off.
This show being the work of alternative comedians, The Young Ones also utilised its anarchic tone to critique the Thatcher administration of the time. This was usually done through the character of Rick, who blamed Margaret Thatcher for most problems faced by the group. Though his character existed to satirise upper-class closet conservatives as well as overzealous student activists, he was something of a mouthpiece for the left-wing writers. Some of his more memorable outbursts include:
RICK: We havenât got any money! Vyvyanâs baby will be a pauper! Oliver Twist! Jeffrey Dickens! Back to Victorian values! [directly to camera, angrily] I hope youâre satisfied, Thatcher!
RICK: Neil! The bathroomâs free! Unlike the country under the Thatcherite junta!
Other characters were used to critique the government too:
RICK: Schoolâs out forever! Yeah, come on everyone! Let all your hairs hang out! Do whatever you want!
MIKE: Whatâs all the excitement, Rick? Has education finally been cut altogether? Thatâs the only reason I voted Tory.
The first of these is a reference to the 1983 interview in which Thatcher endorsed a return to âVictorian valuesâ. That is, a rolling back of the state to unburden the individual and set them free to prosper, should they put the effort in. This New Right attitude, combined with the high unemployment figures from that year, created the view that Thatcherism was about looking out for ânumber oneâ. This wasnât aided by Employment Secretary Norman Tebbitâs âGet On Your Bikeâ speech at the Conservative Party Conference in 1981. The Young Ones captured the mood of particularly the youth in such a climate â one in which many felt misunderstood and patronised â in a cutaway segment featuring the fictional TV programme Nozinâ Arounâ:
BAZ: Rol! A lot of my mates say to me, âOh Baz, what is the point?â What would you say to them?
ROLAND: Well surely, Baz, your mates must realise that there definitely is a point!
BAZ: So a real message of hope and good cheer there â from Roland, a really ace guy!
To summarise; just as is the case today, early 1980s Britons were facing uncertainty. This was especially the case for anyone working in manufacturing industries, as the unsuccess of the Minersâ Strike of 1984 signified a wider trend in British industry. The governmentâs overarching aim of turning society away from one in which a ânanny stateâ risked making people idle to one where everyone was free to accumulate wealth that would trickle down to the less well off was never going to be a smooth period to live through. The last tremors of the Cold War didnât help make the period more bearable. Yet, it is often harder or uncertain times where laughter becomes more valuable to people and The Young Ones â though not to everyoneâs political or cultural tastes â undeniably provided some release for younger generations. To call it an entirely accurate depiction of early 1980s Britain would be to forget that its primary purpose was amusement. Nevertheless, it does provide a colourful insight and one that is remembered with fondness by those who grew up watching it, even today.
[1] Protect and Survive was a series of government issued pamphlets, public information films and radio broadcasts produced in the late 1970s/early 1980s, to be distributed 72 hours before a nuclear attack was expected. Public interest meant they were released in 1980.

[5] After speaking to some adults who were young during this period, Mr Smith revealed how (aged 11 in 1983) he told his class: âI want to be there when the bomb drops. I want to be right next to it so Iâm disintegrated and donât know anything about it.â Additionally, he was under the impression that a bomb would likely be dropped on Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester.

pt.3 The writing style of these parts will vary depending on the situation. Some parts may be written in 3rd person 'You' form or through the perspective of a narrator.
WARNINGS| none really, besides cussing because I am the way I am. This part is short. Trying to ya know, set the scene with this series lol
There are certain things that some would consider the simple joys in life. For example, reading a book, painting a picture, or even listening to a favorite podcast. However, those who do not enjoy some of these activities would rather you suffer a horrible day and spill an entire hot pot of coffee where coffee is not intended.Â
Y/N is one of those simple pleasure kind of people- whereas her coworker Jeongin is one of the worldâs biggest haters of her happiness. This is how the three opening baristas of The Cup House start their morning. Agonized screaming, cursing, and a whole batch of coffee wasted.
âYang Jeongin, I swear to god when I get my hands on you- your ancestors will detest your very existence!â
âFucking bite me, Y/N! I am not listening to that stupid podcast anymore!â
Felix watches in pure horror as the youngest of the baristas throws a dirty dish rag at Y/N- only adding fuel to the fire. From his couple of months working here, Felix has determined that the relationship between you and Jeongin borders on homicidal siblings. If one of you is worked up, then the other is right there to make it worse than it needs to be.Â
âGuys! We literally open in two minutes!â Felix tries his best to start cleaning up the coffee around the two of you bickering- next thing he knows youâre standing behind the counter in nothing but the lacy bra you told him about over the weekend.Â
âI swear to go Jeongin when I tell Mr. Kim about this bullshit heâs revoking your access to the fucking tips.âÂ
All the commotion leaves all three baristas too distracted to hear the bell above the door. Y/N and Jeongin are bickering back and forth as Felix tries to hand Y/N a dry shirt to cover up with before any customers, let alone their boss see whatâs happening.
âWow⊠When Han said there was interesting service here, I didnât think he meant this.â Thereâs a low whistle that causes the baristas to freeze- before turning to the two men on the opposite side of the counter. Jeongin and Felix recognized them as two of the employees from the music store across the street- a place they frequented often on their shared days off.
Y/N tries to keep her blush at bay when her eyes met those of the purple haired customer- he grins sheepishly trying to keep his eyes at a respectful level. Damn this man and his cute fucking dimples. Y/N snatches the shirt from Felix before glaring at Jeongin "Fuck you, Innie," her shoulder checks his as she storms by- blush crawling up her neck.
"Did we just witness a breakup?" Changbin snorts leaning against the counter "If I ever dated Y/N- I want someone to leave me out in the forest to rot." Jeongin scoffs before turning towards the kitchen to make a fresh batch of coffee. Chan watches him wide eyed before meeting Felix's already exhausted eyes- "They are friends through Y/N's younger brother. So like, by proxy they have to dislike one another."
Chan slowly nods, "but, why was her shirt off?" still confused about what The Cup House was all about "IN, spilled an entire batch of black coffee on her. I didn't stop their fighting in time to stop the strip show, unfortunately." Felix sighs grabbing the cups for their regular orders.
"I'd smash" Changbin smirks in the direction Y/N wandered off towards before a heavy slap landed on the back of his head "Shut the fuck up Bin,"
"Wait," Han stops the music playing throughout the store "You guys walked in and Y/N just had her shirt off?" He can't believe that "The one day I don't offer to go get the coffee!" He yells before getting a response "Dude, she didn't even spare me a glance. I doubt she would've noticed you with the way she was going in on Innie," Changbin snorts
"But she's so mommy when she's yelling like that" there was no hesitation with Han's response. He's always had a bit of a thing for women who yell and degrade him. Chan's eyebrows furrow as he looks away from his laptop. "You two need professional help," he says while grabbing his headset to pull over his head.
"Goooood morning, ladies and gents it's Chan,"
"Binnie"
"And ya boy Han- thanks for tuning into 3racha. All things music and a little bit about our personal lives," at this Changbin snorts "More like ninety-five percent our personal lives and five percent music."
"So, here's my first question out for the twitter audience- how would you react if the cute barista across the street was just serving you in her bra?"
So, this is part one. I wanted to use this as an introduction to the series. Also, to introduce the personalities- somewhat- of all those involved. You'll learn a bit more about the personalties of Chan and Y/N the further we get into this.

i like to think of myself as a cinephile when I really donât watch as many movies as Iâd like to bc of the same reasons listed above but I keep up with whatâs happening in the film world and yeah some of my faves include: little women, sing street, before sunrise, aftersun, clueless, call me by your name, the perks of being a wallflower, big hero 6, la la land, zodiac, the social network, scream, the batman, bones and all, knives out, hp/twilight series
random interests: the scream franchise/saw/horror, until dawn (the game), youtube video essays, true crime content/criminology (in the most respectful way I promise I studied it and mean like actual data and researched podcasts not the weirdos that idolize certain people cough cough), perfumes/cosmetics, art, fashion, baking/food in gen, journaling, pinterest, reading (literary fiction/mystery/some ya)
idk what you were expecting this is literally all media but weâre all media consumers here lmao and I thought this might be a fun way to connect with other phannies if we share similar interests outside of dnp :3
#about me#blossoms trivia#me.txt#music#film#tv series#crying over everyoneâs responses to my post before btw assuming most of you will see this ily all sm#i donât wanna keep yapping anout myself so plz take this as an invite to tell me more about u :3

Writeblr Interview Tag!
Thanks so much for the tag, @sableglass!
Short stories, novels, or poems?
Novels all the way. I've tried my hand at short stories, and they always end up being novellas or straight up novels by the time I'm done with them. May as well stick with what my little brain clearly desires!
What genre do you prefer reading?
Mysteries (cozy or otherwise), horror (especially zombie fiction or apocalypse fiction, yes please), fantasy (especially cozy, I love cozy fantasy so much, have you read Legends and Lattes?), and romance.
Are you a planner or a write as I go kind of person?
I'm a little of both! I'll generally have a plan in my head at the very least, if not a brief outline written down somewhere, but when I actually sit down to write, my writing tends to veer off wherever it wants and do its own thing (for example, FUCKING CHUCK). As long as it makes sense, I tend to just let it go wherever it wants lol
What music do you listen to while writing?
Surprisingly, I don't listen to much music while writing. I'll daydream to it, absolutely, but I mostly just throw on some Markiplier or an old debate that I've heard ten thousand times and write to that. It's more about the background noise than the actual content, y'know?
But when I DO listen to music, I drift toward lofi or mood music compilations on youtube. The kind that DMs play during their DnD sessions. Love those so much, they really help keep me locked in a single mood, which I absolutely need when I'm writing a scene.
Favorite books/movies?
Oh god. Lord of the Rings (including the Hobbit don't @ me). Train to Busan (or any Korean zombie movies/shows, really). Some Disney and Pixar - Big Hero 6, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Emperor's New Groove, etc. The Strain is one of my favorite TV shows - I also love Cutthroat Kitchen above all else, a bunch of different anime, and Dance Moms (yes I know it's toxic and yes I am ashamed of myself for enjoying it. I pity the kids but I rage at the moms.)
As for books, my favorites are the Beechwood Harbor Mystery series, The Luminous Dead, Thief Liar Lady, All Systems Red, Legends and Lattes, A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, anything Holly Black, Suffer the Children, Contagion, Luck in the Shadows, Assistant to the Villain, Dead of Night, and Surviving the Evacuation!
Any current WIPs?
Oh gosh. I'm bopping between From Carnival to Chamomile, a prequel to a cozy mystery series, and Dauntless, a zombie apocalypse trilogy, right now. Sometimes I'll work on Priestess Without Honor, a paranormal low-fantasy romance, and Chosen Against My Will, a dark mafia romance. I also have zer0 ALPHA, a lit-rpg isekai zombie apocalypse novel, but I haven't touched that in years and have only recently rediscovered my notes for it.
If someone were to make a cartoon out of you what would your standard outfit be?
I wear the same thing every day, surprisingly. That's the autism for ya. I love jeans and a T-shirt, especially if that T-shirt has a picture from an anime or show or something like that. Printed shirts, I think they're called. Oh, and mismatched socks. That's me.
Create a character description of yourself:Â
Too tall for her own good and unwanted curves for days. Bobbed dark-blue hair with steel gray eyes. Too busy writing or gaming to really notice what's going on. Expect a text back within seconds of receiving it - she reads faster than most people expect and tends to read every text twice just to give it that safety buffer. If there isn't a snack and a drink nearby, call the police.
Do you like incorporating actual people you know into your writing?
Hehehehe maybe. But not exactly in a good way. I'm very much the kind of person who will put someone I dislike into my book just so they can get the justice they won't get in the real world, even over something as minor as pronouncing my name wrong on purpose (I'm looking at you, Keiara).
Are you kill happy with your characters?
I want to say yes because I kill off characters constantly, but when it comes to my main OCs, no. I can't bring myself to kill them at all. I go out of my way to create characters for death (like FUCKING CHUCK) rather than put my favorites in the line of fire. I think that's a problem I need to work on.
Coffee or Tea while writing?
coffeecoffeecoffeecoffee
but I do love tea, especially in the fall. In the fall, I tend to drift toward tea and apple cider rather than coffee.
But otherwise? Coffeeeeeee
Slow or fast writer?
Fast writer when I actually sit down to write! Slow writer when I'm procrastinating. I've been working on Dauntless for...thirteen years? Twelve?
Where/who/what do you draw inspiration from?
I get inspiration from EVERYTHING. Dreams. Books. Movies. Something dumb my partner says offhandedly.
If you were in a fantasy world, what would you be?
I absolutely want to be something cool, like a shadow mage. But I'm probably a little gremlin that hides in the edges of the woods and steals your socks. Mmmm socks.
Most fav book cliche:
Enemies to lovers! Especially when one person is smitten at firstt sight and doesn't realize it.
Least favorite cliche:
Friendship is magic. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with powerful friendships being front and center, but when the big bad is literally destroyed because fRiEnDsHiP I gag a little bit. I also hate undeserved happy endings - make the ending make sense. If it's a sad or horror book, sometimes the ending needs to be bad. And finally, forced romance. No. No thank you. Some stories don't need romance.
Favorite scene to write?
Descriptions! Am I good at them? No. Will I spend three pages describing a tree? Maybe.
Also conversations. I tend to do a lot of conversations and monologues in my writing. Need to work on that.
Reason for writing?
If I don't write down the ideas in my head, I will explode.
TAGLIST: @falconfate - @space-writes - @leahnardo-da-veggie - @i-can-even-burn-salad - anyone who wants to take part!
#talia answers#wow these made me really think#like i have an actual headache now from thinking so hard#time for another nap!

Deities that inspired my music
You may know that I write my lyrics not only inspired by my own experiences, but also by mythology, history, magic, folklore and contemporary fiction. I take a lot of inspiration especially from gods and goddesses, as they have helped guard Talesia for the longest time.
So here are the deities that inspired my songs that are already out.
Diana - Me pareció verla en un sueño
Flores hay en su pelo como una corona con la que reina cada noche al sol caer. Con solo una flecha puede hacer a la luna renacer. (There's flowers in her hair like a crown with which she reigns every night when the sun falls. With just one arrow she can make the moon revive.)
youtube
This song is a bridge between the adult that I am now and the adult I thought I'd become when I was a child. I liked to imagine myself as Diana, protector of young girls. A woman who's beautiful and kind yet lethal when disturbed. It's an ode to both Diana and my inner child.
Venus and Cupid - I wish
I wish Cupidâd send you my arrows or break them so Iâd be set free, cause I always tell Venus about you and I wish she would bring you to me.
youtube
An hymn for the hopeless romantics who yearn to give love but haven't found "the one" yet. Venus and Cupid are called upon during the chorus to ask them for the right person to come - or for the longing to stop.
Apollo - Jacinto
Cuando me siento mor1r como una flor ya marchita, un solo rayo de sol cura como una tirita. (When I feel like dy1ng like a withered flower, a single ray of sun heals just like a band-aid.)
youtube
This song is inspired by a quote I read on Ovid's version of the myth of Apollo and Hyacinth (the quote is in the video's description). I liked to imagine a happy ending in which Hyacinth is brought back to life.
The lyrics are also an allegory for seasonal depression which a lot of us suffer during the winter. This gloomy feeling disappears as spring begins, when the sun comes out and hyacinths bloom.
Jacinto is the first part of a 4-song series called The Garden of the Four Winds in which a song will be released on every solstice or equinox. Each song is tied to a season, but also to a flower and to one of the four winds of Talesia.

What I Write
I mostly write YA fantasy and sci-fi. Expect plenty of queer and neurodivergent rep, sibling relationships of all varieties, bad puns, the odd bit of creepy stuff and a lot of heart. I'm especially into found family, mythology retellings, dragons, space operas, redemption arcs, and exploring trauma and inner character motivations. Not so big on the romance, but I'm getting more into it.

I had a very lovely anon ask me some questions recently and Iâm gonna answer them for ya babes!
1. How long have you been writing?
Oh lord that is a great question. I actually first started writing in like the 7th grade I think? My best friend at the time had introduced me to fan fiction and it was downhill ever since. I used to HAND. WRITE. things in a notebook about this one guy I had a crush on it was FOUL. So Iâve got a good 7 years of practice going for me
2. Are you planning on making this a profession or just for fun?
My absolute DREAM GOAL in life is to be an author. I have several series ideas planned out but Iâm 19 years old and I just have no idea where or how to start. I would love to be able to write all day every day and want nothing more in life than to be the next fantasy author.
3. Who or which character do you prefer to write more for?
Azriel. My sweet, lovely Illyrian baby Azriel form ACOTAR. I love how much depth his character has and we hardly know anything about him. I cannot wait to know more. I also have gained in interest in Lucien thanks to @thelov3lybookworm for getting me hooked on him. And we cannot forget Xaden Riorson. But Az is by far my favorite.
4. What do you do when youâre out of ideas?
I listen to music. I find it very helpful to listen to songs that have some sort of story or underlying meaning to try to spark an idea. That or I just stare off into the distance and wait for it to come. One of those two will eventually work đđ (if anyone needs any good song writing playlists theyâre on my masterlist)
5. Lastly, will you please give advice for the young readers out there?
Honestly, write whatever the hell you want. No matter who itâs about, what it is, just fucking do it. It doesnât matter if it makes sense to the rest of the world it makes sense to you. Donât feel pressured to write things you have no interest in writing. If you donât love a character, donât write for them!! If youâre feeling angsty, write angst. If you want the most jaw dropping, soul twisting adventure, WRITE. IT. Write everything and everything that comes to mind. I have a note in my phone that has three separate sections: Characters, Titles, and Ideas. That is the first place my initial thoughts and ideas for stories go. Or if I think of a random character name, it goes there as well. Find something that works for you is most important. To be a solid writer you donât need to write 1,000 new words a day. Sometimes progress is just reading what you already have and developing thoughts for where you want the story to go. If itâs not working, come back to it another day, go write something else.

Hello Eden (is it okay to call you that?)
Do you have any current favourite songs? What kind of music do you generally listen to?
And do you have any favourite books? What kind of books do you like to read?
If you are okay with sharing, no pressure.
Sending you love and strength â€ïž
Ah!!! Thanks for this ask @sunnenfinster! What a lovely change of pace.
Eden is fine!!!!!
Ok, so I love music and books!
Of all broad genres of entertainment media, music is probably what I follow least closely. Itâs not that I donât like it; I just am always behind the curve in my tastes. I love listening to most confessional singer/songwriters. I love folk, rock, pop, and rap. I also get a lot of music I like from the background of media like TV, Movies, and podcasts. In general, I love confessional singer-songwriters from any genre.
Fave singers (and the albums Iâd recommend from them: songs Iâd recommend from that album [notes]):
Jem (Finally Woken: Come on Closer, Falling for You, Just a Ride). All songs on this album rock, to me.
Sheryl Crow (Sheryl Crow: A Change Would Do You Good, [about choosing love over anger and stopping gun violence], Redemption Day [about the Bosnian war], Maybe Angels [could be about aliens or being in a cult idk but itâs a good song about misplaced belief] I love every song on this album tbh. Wall-to-wall bangers.
Missy Elliot (Under Construction: Gossip Folks, Work it)
Suzanne Vega (99.9 F: 99.9 F, Blood Makes Noise, Rock in the Pocket, When Heroes Go Down)
Artists and songs I like in general: Aimee Mann (her voice is like butter and I could listen to her sing forever); Eliza Rickman: Pretty Little Head; Sims: Icarus; Dessa: Call Off Your Ghost; Sifu Hotman: Matches (I know no other songs by this artist but I LOVE this one so much. Iâm gonna go listen to it right now); Lorde: Yellow Flicker Beat; Björk: Human Behavior; G Flip: Hyperfine, Gay 4 Me, Killing My Time; Aimee Mann: Thatâs Just What You Are [I love Aimeeâs voice and could listen to her sing the phone book. All songs off her Magnolia Album are amazing too]
And gosh. So many moreâŠ
As for books!!!! OMG! I love books so much. I love so many different kinds of books. Some fave genres include: Classic Lit, Magical Realism, Sci-fi/Fantasy/Speculative Fiction; Engaging YA Series, Historical Fiction; Culinary History and Analysis; and Mythological Retellings
Classic Lit Faves:
âTo The Lighthouseâ by Virginia Woolf [This contains my fave quote in all of literature. This could also never be adequately adapted into a movie. Itâs a fascinating look into how people think and how we all process internal thoughts. Must be comfortable with long sentences, semicolons, and allowing sentence clauses to wash over you like ocean waves in order to enjoy this book]
âCider with Rosieâ by Laurie Lee
âAll Quiet on the Western Frontâ by Erich Maria Remarque
âThe Portable Dorothy Parkerâ by Dorothy Parker
âThe Odysseyâ by Homer, translated by Emily Wilson
âThe Iliadâ by Homer â both Emily Wilsonâs Translation and Stanley Lombardoâs Translation
Magical Realism
âThe House of the Spiritsâ by Isabelle Allende
âAunt Julia and the Scriptwriterâ by Mario Vargas Llosa
âBless Me Ăltimaâ by Rudolfo Anaya
âLike Water for Chocolateâ by Laura Esquivel
SFF Faves:
âAn Absolutely Remarkable Thingâ and âA Beautifully Foolish Endeavorâ by Hank Green
âThe Martianâ by Andy Weir
The Tiffany Aching line of the Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett (âThe Wee Free Men,â âI Shall Wear Midnight,â âA Hat Full of Sky,â and âWintersmithâ)
âThe Locked Tombâ Series by Tamsyn Muir (âGideon the Ninth,â âHarrow the Ninth,â âNona the Ninthâ so far)
Engaging YA
âThe Hunger Gamesâ Trilogy by Suzanne Collins
âGrishaverseâ Series by Leigh Bardugo
âShadow and Bone Triogyâ (related to the Grishaverse) by Leigh Bardugo [note: I didnât know until making this list that Leigh Bardugo is an Israeli Jew! Very cool]
Historical Fiction:
âFried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafeâ by Fannie Flagg [the associated cookbook is very good. Also, youâll never eat ribs the same again]
âTracksâ by Louise Erdrich [one of the most interestingly written books Iâve ever read. Has two dueling narrators. This is part of a series of books but can be read as a standalone]
Culinary Analysis History
Bree Wilsonâs books (âFirst Bite: How We Learn to Eat,â âConsider the Fork,â and âThe Way We Eat Now,â specifically) are some of the best out there. [I didnât realize until a couple weeks ago that Bee Wilson and the classicist translator Emily Wilson are sisters! They are both extremely smart, engaging writers.]
âOmnivoreâs Dilemmaâ by Michael Pollan
âAn Edible History of Humanityâ by Tom Standage
âFood: A Cultural Culinary Historyâ by Ken Albala (this one is a Great Courses course, so not technically a book. But itâs available most places you can get audiobooks. And itâs what got me fascinated with this subject)
Mythological Retellings
âCirceâ and âThe Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
âThe Silence of the Girlsâ and âThe Women of Troyâ by Pat Barker [TW Rape]
âNorse Mythologyâ by Neil Gaiman
Genre Defy-ers
(These are some of my All Time Faves that canât really be confined to any genre)
The âOutlanderâ Series by Diana Gabaldon [and the related âLord Johnâ Series by the same author] (TW: for Rape)
âThe Anthropocene Reviewedâ by John Green
Just Finished Reading
âBreakfast at Tiffanyâsâ by Truman Capote (Wow it was so good. I havenât seen the movie in a while but I seriously doubt they adapted it faithfully. It was so surprising!!!)
Currently Reading
âMurder on the Orient Expressâ by Agatha Christie
Selections From My To Be Read List
âThe City of Brassâ by S.A. Chakraborty
âLessons in Chemistryâ by Bonnie Garmus
âThe Sourceâ by James Michener
âThe Secret of Cookingâ by Bee Wilson
âEqual Ritesâ by Terry Pratchett
âA Time Travelerâs Guide to Medieval Englandâ by Ian Mortimer
âWhat You Are Looking For Is In The Libraryâ by Michiko Aoyama
âThe Doomsday Bookâ by Connie Willis
I also love to read cookbooks from various cultures to gain insight into those cultures in a very tactile way.
Sending you love and gratitude! đđđđ
Iâm always down to discuss books!

Because I rarely show any of my other interests here I thought it'd be neat to briefly talk about my love for anime.
Now while I am called cartoon buffoon for my deep love for rubberhose toons, I appreciate the japanese style of animation with two of my favorite animes being JoJo's bizarre Adventure and Dragon Ball Z & SuperâI never watched original dragon ball or GT. I'm of Mexican descent so me liking dragon ball is just second nature, it's destiny. But JoJo's also is something I adore because of all the music references and the fights which I find super entertaining as their a sort of battle of wits. Like seeing someone like Josuke outsmart a stand that's objectively more powerful than crazy diamond or Girono utilizing Golden Experience to its fullest is something that made a younger me go fucking crazy and scream. I do like other series for example I've seen a bit of one punch man, I watched full metal alchemist however I never saw the stuff that came out that was based on the manga (since the original anime caught up to the manga and went in its own direction). As a sonic fan Sonic X just cause it's Sonic, ya know. I tried and I mean I TRIED to get into one piece but like... My attention span isn't cut out for that lol. The ghost stories dub is something I find hilarious, I'm an edgy bastard I know. Oh and Kill La Kill is also something I hold dearly because even as an aro-ace who doesn't find human characters in fiction attractive I actually can appreciate it's fights and humor while not really being phased by its not so subtle and EXTREME fan service.
This is just kinda a ramble about some of my other interests but yeah. Also if you're curious when it comes to my favorite characters in Dragonballâother than Beerus who is a sexy cat god of destruction who'd I let ruin meâI absolutely ADORE Broly and his canon iteration in Super
Like I love OG Broly who is ya know, a fucking DEMON and unit who only lost to main character Goku is the MC and some Deus Ex Machina of classic "lend me your energy!", I love super Broly because I'm a person who suffers from violent thoughts and anger issues so to see a gentle giant character who genuinely doesn't like to fight despite being a Sayian but is still capable of outbursts if provoked or when needed resonates with me. Like I obviously don't have the power to match my anger like Broly does but when I have an outburst or when my anger fuses with a manic episode it hurts not really having any control over what I do and when I finally calm down I take accountability for everything I do and it makes me feel awful. Also for the people who I talk to and are (somewhat) friends with on here you know I'm very meek, easily frightened, and anxious lol. So ya know I love DBS Broly, my second favorite Broly iteration.
(first is DBZ abridged Broly Movie Broly. "PRINCESS TRUNKS!" Was legit a vocal stim of mine and his character in that movie is better than his crazy psycho character in the actual Broly movie)
Anyways that's all for now, just brief talk of who I am and some other interests ya know
