totk cataclysm event wasnt just a great (but utterly missed) opportunity to change the map in techincally little ways that has drastic consequences both in stakes and in gameplay (like i mentioned before, flooding the gerudo desert would have meant devastating consequences for its ecosystem- like imagine little islands of sand still poking out, acting as a sort of last doomed refuge for sandseals- but also cahnged the entire gameplay of it, good chance to introduce some neat new ways to surf on water like a new ridable creature or an ice shield freezing a path while you surf on it, the gerudo being forced to save the city from drowing in various means or now living on the roofs, trying to adapt by building boats ect - also call back to older games?? since totk loves that so much ..-, vah naboris serving as the savest refuge being high above the water, even if non functional; similarly takign away ALL water from the zora region, gaving it all dry out would imemdiately turn into something way different and could mean death for the zora- forcing them to move to the lower parts of akkala for example- maybe vah ruta is still halfway functioning bc the faith the zora have to mipha, dorephan and sidon is, while not enough to keep it fully functional, but enough to generate some water so the most stubborn or brave zora set up around it like a last oasis; i know its somewhat done with death mountain but the gorons dont really suffer from it bc their only problem is a drugged rock that makes them mean and lazy ..- what about collapsing or exploding it, leaving a large crater that over the course of the game could start to grow with plant life since vulcanic earth is so fertile- some never seen before ones that was dormant in the lava and now that its cooled off is springing to life, which might seem good at first but for the area and its wildlife means loss of their habitat; the rito freezing over, but actually having to move, maybe into the tabantha canyon, building their new makeshift homes in between the walls of it- generally just switiching things around a bit would have done so much wihtout having to edit every last detail ((seriously tho, how did this game take so long given that botw took similar but they did that ENTIRE main map as detailed as it is AND made it all coherent with itself and its themes- im ranting again ..)
-but it ALSO would have been the perfect opportunity to introduce new weather types created by the sudden change in environment, somethign like a super strong wind that slows you when walking agaisnt and lets you jump much farther when with it- a darkness thing that clouds the world in utter darkness with only little light getting through anything that is caused by mushrooms from the udnerground invading the surface and their spores snuffs out all light (which could explain the weird darkness in the ruins from botw too!!), or just simply mist! making everything misty changes the entire feel of any environment drastically- you could make vertain enemies spawn only in certain weather conditions, lessening the repetive overuse of them; and that is only on the surface- what if the sky had sunbeams so strong it sets anything on fire if you dare to leave the shadows- to comabt it get a armor with a giant hat!! the underground could have been filled with different environments in the first place, but then of course thered be those dark spores of mushrooms, an entire forest you have to carefully travers other wise making them release their spores and make it all more difficult, glowy mushrooms, MORE glowy mushroms, theres so many weird ass shrooms IRL you could take inspo from!! maybe soemthing like a forest of kelp, long flowy plants obstructing view and making you anxious by any movement- there could be one thats a mimic or infected with miasma, slightly off color and its knobs are malice eyes that open only if it thinks you cant see it
(also for the idea of taking botws stuff and recontextualizing it, the guardians or shrines, now non fucntional, could be infected my miasma sometimes, maybe randomly to keep you guessing- an overgrown shrine suddenly lifting itself up with hands clawing at you when you get too close or do sth wrong to distrub it- similar with guardians tho the effect might be less since you know them as a threat already- or sth i mentioned in another post, a tower being used as a weapon by a gigatic miasma monster- the one in the gerudo region with the bottomless pit for example, perfect for an arena for you to run around in the spiral while its swinging at you etc etc)
JUST taking what botw had and mixing it up, expanding on it, even if technically little change, it could do so much but in the actual game death mountain and rito is the only ones that saw anything of a change like it, and it largely .. didnt change anything or was reversible easily, and had no actual consquences that meant anything, neither stakes nor environmental or narratively (the gerudo felt like it at first but its also largely reversible, its just kinda .. adding a bit of city)
i hhhhhhhhhhhhhh have so many thoughts still, i am just better at holding them back .... also dont wanna annoy lmao

Note
I absolutely loved the game and I love how it's going so far, and I have a few questions about the game and Mychael
1- Were you inspired by any character for Mychael's design?
2-Are you going to keep track of the other endings? It would be very interesting, especially the end "play pretend"
3-Does Mychael know what happened to our cat? He looks uncomfortable every time we ask him
If something is written wrong it is that English is not my first language 😅
Thank you for making this beautiful game, I'm already waiting for day 3 ❤️
I kinda rambled a bunch (especially since there's 3 questions) so I'll put them under a cut!
1 - Hmm, I suppose the closest at the time was Niall from Parasite in Love! This was way way back during drafting, where I didn't even know what was gonna happen in the demo. But the idea of a character that's killing you from the inside trying to comfort you definitely stuck with me. And I think the closest to that feeling I was able to do was in Ending 3. Since then, Mychael kinda became his own thing haha.
Re-reading this ask I realized you were asking about the design and I completely rambled about something else hahaha! Design-wise there wasn't just one source, but here's a taped together moodboard from the demo.
Tumblr media
2 - Do you mean to say continuations? Probably not! Mushroom Oasis is very linear; in fact, your choices don't actually affect your gameplay haha! Bad endings only happen when a choice completely branches off the main story and stops there. But those are occasional. And most of the time, the bad endings are pretty obvious and easy to avoid.
3 - He does ::-)
Thank you too! <3

The Sims 4: Medieval Save
Tumblr media
Hear ye! Hear ye! The Medieval Save is finally here!
This has been an ongoing project which many Simmers from all across the world were apart of and we turned nearly 19 worlds from the game into medieval kingdoms. I've always been a fan of medieval fantasy as well as The Sims Medieval and so this save was born.
A few things to take note of:
* Due to the previous placements of some lots in destination worlds, a bug caused them to became unplayable. It is now fixed (as well as a few other things) and I kindly ask you to re-download the save and delete all previous versions (uploaded before 13 March 2023).
* This is not meant to be a historically accurate save and not all worlds can be considered "medieval". For example Oasis Springs was turned into Ancient Egypt and StrangerVille was turned into a Native-American world and there are many fantasy creatures in the save. Also, The Sims is a very modern game and we had to work with what we have. I guess it would've been more accurate to name it Historical Fantasy Save or something along those lines, but the main theme has always been medieval.
* It requires nearly all the packs and is quite a big file. I didn't want to restrict people's creativity and we don't have many medieval looking items in the game. I recommend lowering your graphics if you have a lower end PC and note that you might have many bald, nude Sims and missing build objects if you're missing packs.
* It doesn't add any new gameplay, though it could change how you play the game. Almost all modern appliances are removed and most lots are off-the-grid. This is not a mod and thus I couldn't add things like swordfighting or things that would make the save more immersive. Luckily there are many mods out there that could help with that.
* Some Sims with royal titles have longer names and editing them in CAS will force you to shorten their name. If you wish to edit them, you can shorten their name in CAS and just re-add their titles with MCCC in live mode.
* NPC Sims/townies will continuously spawn with modern clothing by the game's design. You can either delete them as they spawn, give them medieval makeovers or edit them in CAS and replace them with medieval Sims from the Gallery. There are some tutorials on YouTube which could help with this, like this video by KatsCorner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPsxmGk92M4

I watched a demo gameplay of a visual novel called Mushroom Oasis. And I already love it! Especially Mychaehl! I can’t wait to play the game when it’s finished!
I made this little comic about the player revealing themselves to be a strange creature like Mychael, understanding his situation.
Mychael belongs to @deerspherestudios
The girl (Moon) belongs to me.

if I had to rank the settlements in totk based on how interesting I think the changes made from botw were
gerudo down: you get a whole new map AND once you finish the quest you get access to it and the primary map from the first game. really the best of both worlds. the visual of the barren town full of sand and gibdos was a striking change from the lush oasis
lurelin village: this was great. I think this is a huge improvement over tarrey town bc the game separates "gather people from every nation" and "(re)build a village" into two different settlements this time. lurelin is just focused on the rebuilding effort and that's more gamified than tarrey town ever was
rito village: I loved the look of the snowy village and the vibe of the children trying to run things while the parents were foraging. not a huge change but good visuals and a new excuse to make it hard to get there
kakariko village: the addition of the ring ruins changes the vibe a lot and I like it. it has a totally different feel from the first game despite having an identical map
zora's domain: not actually a map change, genuinely kind of annoying to get around. I felt really bad for them though. story wise it was good, gameplay wise it didn't thrill me
hateno village: the mushrooms are cute. the village storyline was very good. I like the addition of the farm and the school but there's really no map change other than that
goron city: it was wild that it was actually easier to get to goron city than in the first game and it wasn't hot all the time?? I guess that's the easy plotline and they used it up. the layout of the town was exactly the same and the plot was silly and enjoyable but not emotionally resonant for me

Sega and franchise decay
Sonic Forces, the newest 3D game to star a certain blue hedgehog, is out now and receiving middling reviews. Rather than talk about it, I’d rather discuss the 2D Sonic Mania, which came out a few months ago. I never got the chance to blog about it until now, but you can read my Steam review for what it’s worth. I would’ve preferred that the game be composed of all new levels instead of a few new ones and remixed oldies, and in some ways I do believe that Sonic Generations did the “celebration of past and future” shtick a tad better, but overall, I had a good time with Mania. The most impressive thing about it, in my eyes, is how well it captures that 90s-2000s Sega “magic.” It’s hard to describe this in words, but during those years the company’s output, especially their in-house, exclusive stuff, just radiated coolness and creativity that was a little different from what Nintendo was doing. Whether it was the neon visual smorgasbord that encompassed all of the zones in Sonic’s games or the Moebius-inspired fantasy trappings of the Panzer Dragoon series, Sega’s games often seemed fresher and sexier, with dashes of unexpected punk and sophistication in them that the Big N could never really capture. I mean, the run ‘n jump levels and cheery tunes of the Mushroom Kingdom in the Mario games were wonderful, but hell, Sonic 3 featured snowboarding action and a soundtrack that Michael Jackson worked on.
Unfortunately, while the Nintendo of 2017 is kicking butt with the Switch and has upcoming releases scheduled for most of their classic franchises, the Sega of 2017 is in a much different position, and the changes began after the sad failure of the Dreamcast in 2001, when Sega killed off its hardware unit. In the years since, the company’s slowly morphed from a creative house that bankrolled a franchise of games starring an alien-fighting aquatic mammal (Ecco the Dolphin) into a conservative organization that does NOT want to repeat the monetary losses that were suffered during the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast eras, and is therefore highly selective with what it publishes and develops. And somewhere along the way, most of the older franchises that Sega was known for went by the wayside, because their most recent entries either underperformed or they were considered too risky for today’s gaming environment. If you look at the company’s website, you can see a list of what modern Sega considers to be their top tier franchises, and most of them are Western ones that were acquired fairly recently, like Company of Heroes. As far as notable in-house Japanese stuff is concerned, you’ve really only got the Yakuza and Hatsune Miku games (guaranteed moneymakers in Japan, which is why they keep getting made), and Sonic (a guaranteed moneymaker in the rest of the world).  What happened to all those franchises of the past, then? Sega let them decay. Shinobi got its last release - a pretty good 3DS game - in 2011, and there’s been nary a word since. Anything is possible with ninjas, since Capcom brought Strider back from a 15 year retirement in 2013, but for now, Joe Musashi is AWOL. Ecco the Dolphin died in the Dreamcast era, Shining Force seems to have sputtered out after several PS2 and PSP releases that barely resembled the series’ strategy roots, and Panzer Dragoon vanished after Sega’s short-lived flirtation with the original Xbox in the early 2000s. The Oasis series (Beyond Oasis and Legend of Thor) never survived past the Sega Saturn, despite featuring excellent top-down action RPG gameplay that had the potential to go up against Zelda, if Sega had only invested the resources. While we’re on the topic of RPGs, Phantasy Star *sort of* still lives on as an MMO, but the single player entries in the series have long been dead, and even after five years, Sega has still refused to localize Phantasy Star Online 2 outside of Japan. And then we have two really depressing ones - Streets of Rage has been MIA even though Sega went out of its way to issue a takedown notice for a popular fan remake that was released in 2011, and Virtua Fighter, despite being pretty much the earliest 3D fighting franchise, hasn’t seen a real entry since 2006, and only exists as a cheap mobile game now. (I realize there are plenty of other franchises I’m leaving out here like Jet Set Radio, but I decided to limit my focus to games I’d played.)
In the aftermath of Sonic Mania’s release, there were a number of threads on NeoGAF (before GAF, well, imploded), speculating on what franchises should receive a “Mania” type resurrection. And if you’ve read up to this point, you can guess what my answer will be - damn near all of Sega’s old series could use this treatment. New versions of Shining Force and Panzer Dragoon that respect their legacy by emulating the style of their forefathers while introducing just enough new stuff to appeal to younger fans would absolutely make me lose my mind. But I feel that we’re unlikely to ever get a “Shining Mania” or “Panzer Dragoon Mania,” because the circumstances that brought us Sonic Mania are unique. Sonic has always had a robust fangame and ROM hacking community, and it was Christian Whitehead, one of those fan engineers, whose mobile port of Sonic CD just happened to be good enough to get Sega to hire him to port other Sonic games to phones. One thing led to another, and eventually Christian got tasked to take the lead in making Sonic Mania.  Sega’s other old franchises don’t inspire fans and homebrew projects in quite the same way, and even though Streets of Rage came close with that 2011 remake, Sega swooped in pretty fast to nuke that one from the net, and I don’t think they gave any of the former devs jobs. This is because Sega just doesn’t care about Streets of Rage, Ecco the Dolphin, or even Virtua Fighter as much as Sonic. The blue hedgehog is a long-term mascot who’s managed to survive oodles of so-so 3D games (like the new Sonic Forces) to still be popular 25+ years after his birth. He’s not seen as a risk to the conservative Sega of 2017. A new Oasis game, on the other hand, probably is, and why should Sega stretch their lessened in-house production studios on what might be criticized as a Zelda clone when they can instead make another proven thing - a new Sonic, or perhaps a Yakuza or Hatsune Mika spinoff? No, I think the only way some of these franchises could be resurrected is if the original devs manage to grab hold of the license and take to Kickstarter, as is the case with Shenmue 3, a rare success story in this day in age. (Emphasis on the word RARE…and I’d actually rather not call Shenmue 3 a total “success” until the game is out, to be honest.) Franchise decay isn’t unique to Sega. It’s an affliction present in many other production studios, from Square Enix (I miss you, Parasite Eve) to Capcom (the mobile Breath of Fire 6 does not count) to Konami (Contra, Suikoden, damn near everything). Even Nintendo, who have generally done a fine job at avoiding this by bringing Kid Icarus and 2D Metroid back from the dead, have seemingly gone out of their way to not make a new F-Zero game for an awfully long time. But Sega is definitely the king when it comes to the sheer number of oldies that could stand to be updated for a new generation, but won’t be. And Sega are also the only ones to tempt us with Sonic Mania, a game chock-full of easter eggs to old titles that also offers a template which would be PERFECT for something like Shinobi or Streets of Rage…but one that likely won’t be used. Because the magical Sega of yesteryear, the one that got Michael Jackson to fiddle with Sonic 3 and used to be oh so fresh and oh so cool, is not the Sega of today.  RIP, Shinobi, Ecco, Shining Force, Panzer Dragoon, Oasis, single player Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage and Virtua Fighter. Somewhere, in the same alternate universe that Sonic Mania manifested from, the Dreamcast did super well and all of you are on your tenth respective entries right now.
It’s a blast processing fever dream, but isn’t it a nice one? (Header Sonic Mania screenshot taken by me. All the other pics I jacked from Mobygames.)

Ever Oasis
Tumblr media
Just when you thought that the 3DS was about to die a slow death, Grezzo comes out with this excellent piece of a time waster masquerading as a RPG. It’s more or less a cross between Animal Crossing, Kingdom Hearts and Zelda. It’s got management of your oasis, side-quests, dungeons, puzzles, party battles. There’s also some pseudo-FPS moments in there. What doesn’t this game have? Well, it doesn’t really have characters you give a shit about whether or not they die in a fire.
The basic gist of the game is this: The rest of the world looks like fucking Africa (the shitty parts) while you live in the Garden of Eden, keeping the evil forces of Chaos out of your oasis. You grow up in an oasis with your bro, but that doesn’t last too long and Chaos envelops his oasis and you get the fuck out of there. The water spirit Esna starts flirting you up to create another oasis, since you’re the child of some fucking tree. Once you’re done with that you start thinking “hey, should we like.... do something about Chaos?”, nobody seems to have thought of that for like... since ever. So you go out and gather residents you have to run errands for, despite the fact that you’re the chief of the tribe.
Let’s get this over with. The graphics are really great for the 3DS. Now that graphics are dealt with, let’s get down to the gameplay. It plays out as an action RPG, in the style of Kingdom Hearts. The battles are in real time, you can switch between party members and while you’d think there’d be some strategy required... Nah, it’s a button masher. But it’s a fun button masher. You get to do combos, cast spells (kinda) and there are a few different varieties of weapons to use. But it does lack depth, we can’t ignore that.
The Animal Crossing elements of the game are basically you being able to build Bloom Booths (market stalls) to sell different shit, including drugs. There’s this one sidequest you get where you’re supposed to find a mushroom which makes you laugh. Come on Nintendo, we all love shrooms but let’s not get 7-year olds into it. Let’s wait til they’re 9 at least. When you get farther into the game you get to send expeditions to gather materials for your booths, and you upgrade your garden to grow all kinds of grub. However, it gets a bit tedious after a while. You’re being forced by your citizens to go out and risk your life and find a fucking strawberry. I’m not kidding when I say that out of the 30 hours I spent with this game... 20 were probably spent just running around gathering materials. I had fun, but jesus christ, when you look back at it, it was a waste of time. I guess it’s the gaming equivalent of spending two years studying gender studies.
The above mentioned elements does take away a bit of the enjoyment from the puzzles and dungeons. I was surprised by the amount of explorable land in this game. It doesn’t rival Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption or whatever, but for a 3DS game there’s a lot of space to explore. The overworld does feel a bit empty at times, but once you descend into a black hole there’s a lot of shit to do. Even though the puzzles are of a hilarious simplicity at times, there are occassions where you have to stop and think about what to do. One sucky thing about this though is that every resident have skills, so for some puzzles you’ll have to teleport back to the oasis to switch out party members just because there’s a hole in the ground which requires a specific skill to go through. This happens A LOT, and it’s never made clear why the fuck I can’t be taught to turn myself into a ball, dig with a SHOVEL or hack stones with a pickaxe. It’s not fucking rocket science.
I’m getting all riled up here, but it is a great game, and probably one of the top 3 games I’ve played on the 3DS. It’s got something for most gamers, and if you’re not into the whole micromanagement thing, then you can probably just hack n slash your way through the game without caring much about those elements.

The Origami King gameplay in new trailer • Eurogamer.net
Those eager to know more about the events set to unfold when Paper Mario: The Origami King comes to Switch next month are in luck; Nintendo has released a five-minute gameplay deep-dive video thingy, touching on everything from combat mechanics to the long-awaited return of companions. As they say in the Mushroom Kingdom – let’s a-go!
As The Origami King’s announcement trailer revealed, there’s an new nemesis in town this time around, with Princess Peach’s castle under siege from the evil King Olly and his cohorts. From that starting point, a quest to find the end of five ribbons stretching across the world unfolds, one that sees Mario exploring a striking series of locales, including an autumn-hued mountain, a forest spring, a desert oasis, an underground sewer (of course), and even a ninja-filled mansion.
There are secrets to find and mini-games to play along the way – white water rafting, target shooting, underwater treasure hunting, aerial battling, quiz shows, and fishing get an airing in the latest trailer – and there are more suggestions the series has finally return to its RPG roots too; a range of companions will tag along with Mario on his latest grand adventure, for instance, including Bobby the amnesiac Bob-omb, the historian Professor Toad, and Olivia, the sister of King Olly, intent on thwarting her brother’s nefarious plans.
To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Manage cookie settings
Paper Mario’s other notable addition comes in the form of a new 360-degree battle system. While the rhythmic combat of previous Mario RPG entries looks to remain intact – Mario is shown foot-stomping, fire-balling, tail-spinning, hammer-bopping, and POW-blocking his foes – the whole thing plays out on a new ring-style battle grid.
The idea here is that Mario stands in the middle and players can rotate and slide rings around him, albeit with a limit on the number of moves available, aiming to shift enemies into more advantageous positions. Successfully line them up in a row, for instance, and it’s possible to attack every opponent all in one go.
That’s taken a step further in boss battles – which all have a stationery theme, including a rubber band boss, a coloured pencil boss, and more – with players being required to spin and slide rings around their formidable opponent so that guide arrows form a path nudging Mario into the centre where he can attack.
There are a few more tantalising glimpses of Mario’s adventure (and his concertina-style arms), including a quest to locate Toads that’ve been transformed into random items – including a cicada, flower, fox, and fried egg – who might ultimately prove to be useful in a fight.
And if that’s enough to sell you on The Origami King, it comes to Switch on 17th July.

Of course, the world ends. It was just a question of time. Extreme climate change, global economic crisis, a lethal pandemic, and increasing tension between old and new superpowers. For the first time since 1945 nuclear weapons were used in armed conflict. Mushroom clouds rose from east to west before the dust settled. Now it’s over and the Earth is still. Nature has invaded ruined cities. Wind sweeps through empty streets, turned into graveyards. The humans are all gone. Scavenging through the remains of civilization are the Mutants, deformed humanoids and animals alike, searching for salvation or just something to eat. To survive, you and your companions must venture out to explore the Zone. Maybe one day you will find the Eden of legends, the ancients’ haven in the middle of hell. That’s where truth awaits, the stories say. Maybe you will find your answers there. Then again, maybe it’s all bullshit. TACTICAL COMBAT Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is the ultimate fix for your tactical strategy addiction. Dive into a deep, turn-based, tactical combat system inspired by the XCOM games. EXPLORE A POST-HUMAN EARTH Journey through a post-human world of abandoned cities, crumbling highways, and overgrown countryside. Check back at the Ark, a neon-bathed oasis of ill repute and questionable characters, to restock your supplies and plan out your next adventure. CONTROL A TEAM OF MUTANTS A duck with an attitude problem and a boar with anger issues; these aren’t your typical heroes. Get to know Dux, Bormin, Selma, and many other characters each with their own unique personality and deranged perspective on the world and their situation. MASTER THE STEALTHY APPROACH Sneak through shadows to avoid conflict or to catch enemies unaware. Real-time stealth allows you full control of approach: sneak into an enemy camp, position the team of Mutants to your advantage, and gain the element of surprise. UNLOCK MUTATIONS Unlock new mutations and abilities for your Mutants, such as Selma’s grasping vines, Bormin’s Charge, and Dux‘ uncanny ability to sneak into a camp full of enemies unnoticed, despite being a 4-foot tall walking, talking duck with a crossbow. DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT Use the environment to your advantage. Stay out of floodlights, hide from line of sight, or just blast down fully destructible walls and buildings and wreak utter havoc. LOOT, LOOT EVERYWHERE From makeshift slingshots to high-powered rifles and top hats to police vests, make sure you equip your Mutants for the dangers ahead. Nothing says post-human quite like a mutated boar in spiked metal armor charging at you with a blunderbuss in his hands.
