Israel Day Three: Wednesday 1/02/19
After a very long day two, the group enjoyed the bus ride south to visit a local Moshav near the Gaza strip. A Moshav is a cooperative community of farmers that live, work, and play together but make their own choices. The Moshav that we visited has 850 adults and 200 children living there. This Mushov was at first a buffer zone between Israel and Sinai, but in the 70’s Israel invited young couples to move there and start a new life in this empty fertile land. Suzie, a member of the Mushav and our guide while there, and her husband were one of the 58 couples who chose to pack up their things and do exactly that. Despite the turmoil and consistent danger, they have not ever considered leaving the Mushav because of the “physical, emotional, and financial support” it provides. Many children raised in the Mushav, once old enough choose to marry someone else from the group and stay in the Mushav to raise their own family.
While at the Mushav there was a strange feeling of vulnerability in the air. Being so close to Gaza the Mushav is not able to be protected by the Israeli Dome, an air-defense system designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets. Instead the people there have to live cautiously. All of the houses have bomb shelters. And because people living there have 5-15 seconds to get to a shelter, if the alarm rings to inform them of potential danger in the air, all of the houses are left unlocked. The entire school is made from a bomb shelter material. The school bus route goes down a very inconvenient hill, to the bottom of the valley just so it can stay more camouflaged while taking the children to school. With all of these modifications to normal life and the fear of constant threats you would imagine that Suzie and the other Mushav members would be pretty bitter and hostile to the people of Gaza, or more specifically towards Hamas the terrorist group that makes up only 10% of the population yet controls the Gaza Strip. Yet they are not. Not even a bit.
Suzie remembers when there wasn’t a wall between Israel and Gaza. She remembers, and still tries to reach out to, her friends that live in Gaza. She remembers when things used to be different. But most importantly she remembers that the people of Gaza are just as much human as she is and just as much worthy of forgiveness and love. That is why this Mushav has never tried to retaliate. Talk about reckless love?
After leaving the Mushav the bus took us to the 2 walls that separate Israel and Gaza. The wall closest to Gaza was built first, and it goes down to protect the agriculture. The second wall closer to the Mushav, is built going up to protect the people.
We were given the opportunity to eat lunch at the Or Haner Kibbutz, a collective community that shares everything and makes all choices as a group. There are approximately 250 in Israel. A Kibbutz, traditionally is more group-minded than a Mushav. The food was prepared, served, and enjoyed all by Kibbutz members in a large dining room. It was a very unique experience to get a peek into their lives.
On the way to our final destination of the day we stopped by the town of Sderot. Still close to the border, we saw that many of the houses there had shelter rooms attached to their homes. We played at Wishes Park, a park that blends outdoor fun and safety into one. It had swing sets and slides, but also two bus-sized shelters that were hollow worm figures where kids can run in and out of, or hide in if need be.
The last stop of the day was at Tel Azeka, which is mentioned in 1 Samuel 17:1, “Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled at Sokoh in Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes Dammim, between Sokoh and Azekah”. Standing at the top of the hill, Lance read over the story of David and Goliath. He was able to point at the Valley of Elah, where David and the other Israelites camped waiting for the Philistines to attack. It was a breathtaking view, with an even more amazing biblical story.
After getting our fair share of photos of the landscape, we returned back to the hotel for a presentation about the Palestinian relationship with Israel. Then we ate dinner at the hotel. To end the evening, we listened to a humorous talk between two good friends, an Arab Christian and American Jew, about Christian and Jewish relations.
One of the speakers of the evening said “what divides us is far less than what is common between us”. He was referring to how he an Arab Christian could be so close with an American Jew, but I think this way of thinking is more transferable than that one instance. This line could also explain why the people of the Mushav continue to show love and kindness to those living in Gaza. Or how Jews, Muslims, and Christians are able to “peacefully” inhabit Jerusalem and share its’ holy sites. When I heard him say this, I took it as a challenge. A challenge to love those that I deemed different than myself. Because in the end, we are all loved and adored by the same God.
Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. - 1 John 4:11
