It is always impressive to see how artworks sometimes have the ability to function as historical documents! This anonymous painting from around 1867 shows the original interior of the National Gallery in Edinburgh, as designed by Edinburgh painter-decorator D.R. Hay. If you look closely, you can see student-painters in the process of copying works from the Scottish national art collection, probably hoping that their work will also be featured on these walls one day. Apart from the walls now being red and a little less crowded, the interior of the National Gallery has not changed much. Even the 'Dutch weave' green carpet remains!
