Smog: The Air Pollution Game
Smog is an educational game illustrating the complex problem of air pollution. Each player attempts to manage their city better than the others by growing the city, keeping it out of debt, and improving (or not worsening) the air quality of the city.
Urban Systems, Inc. was a consulting and research firm, whose president, Richard H. Rosen, was an ecologist and environmental engineer. While teaching undergraduate air pollution classes at Harvard, Rosen produced a number of anti-pollution board games for educational purposes.

So for my grad seminar I just read an article on how museums make us loose the physically of objects. Their “thingness”. And I didn’t get it like why would you need to touch the object that promotes so much risk. But now… I get it
I got to hold a 500,000 year old hand axe at the museum today.
It's right-handed
I am right-handed
There are grooves for the thumb and knuckle to grip that fit my hand perfectly
I have calluses there from holding my stylus and pencils and the gardening tools.
There are sharper and blunter parts of the edge, for different types of cutting, as well as a point for piercing.
I know exactly how to use this to butcher a carcass.
A homo erectus made it
Some ancestor of mine, three species ago, made a tool that fits my hand perfectly, and that I still know how to use.
Who were you
A man? A woman? Did you even use those words?
Did you craft alone or were you with friends? Did you sing while you worked?
Did you find this stone yourself, or did you trade for it? Was it a gift?
Did you make it for yourself, or someone else, or does the distinction of personal property not really apply here?
Who were you?
What would you think today, seeing your descendant hold your tool and sob because it fits her hands as well?
What about your other descendant, the docent and caretaker of your tool, holding her hands under it the way you hold your hands under your baby's head when a stranger holds them.
Is it bizarre to you, that your most utilitarian object is now revered as holy?
Or has it always been divine?
Or is the divine in how I am watching videos on how to knap stone made by your other descendants, learning by example the way you did?
Tomorrow morning I am going to the local riverbed in search of the appropriate stones, and I will follow your example.
The first blood spilled on it will almost certainly be my own, as I learn the textures and rhythm of how it's done.
Did you have cuss words back then? Gods to blaspheme when the rock slips and you almost take your thumbnail off instead? Or did you just scream?
I'm not religious.
But if spilling my own blood to connect with a stranger who shared it isn't partaking in the divine
I don't know what is.

i am thinking how much poorer, how much less colorful the world would be if art was only made by "professionals." if all the music, all the stories, all the sketches & paintings & craftwork of the world was created only by the small category of people able to make a decent living from their art. imagine if the only people allowed to create were the experts & the renowned & those aspiring to the top. what a grey world that would be. how much joy would be bleached away! i love you people who create for the sake of creating, i love you artists who do art for tiny audiences, i love you people who make things even just for one person, even just for themselves, even if no one's watching, thank you thank you thank you for decorating the world in which we all exist
#not a shitpost#related: the most powerful crafters alive are crocheters who spend 7+ years making an intricate table cloth no one is allowed to eat on#all that arcane magic into making a display object primarily for their own enjoyment#and that of the blessed few lucky enough to be invited into their home to behold what is by rights a sacred object#if you spend a certain number of hours crafting something u have the right to have it put in a shrine or museum of your choosing i think#you have imbued it with your Life Essence by sheer force of concentration and obsession it is Holy now#anyways. old ladies who knit/crochet/embroider etc are a thousands times more powerful and intimidating#than old white dudes who are obsessed with war memorabilia or whatever#i have nothing but respect awe and appropriate amounts of fear towards crafters. my liege

every time i watch anything with him in it (admittingly, predominantly from the Dropout app), i am reminded that Lou Wilson is the most handsome man to have ever lived. like, objectively. he just is. i will hear no arguments for any other person to be ranked higher. Lou Wilson: whose face single-handedly shows humanity can go no higher in beauty. he is THE most attractive man in the world. argue with the wall lmao
#lou wilson#dimension 20#dropout#game changer#i feel compelled to mention this comes from (a) me having had this opinion 5ever and needing it published as i rewatch Neverafter#and (b) that i am on aroace spectrum (im a demi-bi/pan-romantic asexual. mouthful. ugh) so like#the ''hot tingling'' feelings y'all alloromantic-allosexuals get? i dont get those. i feel like this somehow equips me to be#objective while y'all have subjectively biased preferences. dont ask me questions about this flimsy defense. im so objective. all the time#(if you need a tone indicator here: im being sarcastic and joking. i know my queerness does not make me objective. but let me joke about#this because i feel like i am SO RIGHT ABOUT HOW GODDAMN ATTRACTIVE LOU WILSON IS. PUT THIS MAN'S IMAGE IN MUSEUMS TO LAST FOREVERMORE)#how can a man still be hot after voicing Pinocchio. idk. ask Lou Wilson the most beautiful man to ever exist#he's just so stylish and pretty and funny and he has a great smile. A++. put him on the cover of magazines#my post#mine

can "activists" please stop trying to fuck with the empty frames at the Gardner museum. this is the second time the museum has had to close early to keep that from happening
like. first of all, the art museum climate protests that have happened so far piss me off despite the fact that I agree with their overall goals, because the messages in interviews all boil down to "how DARE you VALUE ART when BAD THINGS ARE HAPPENING, ordinary museum-goer?!" but at least they've taken pains to not actually damage anything important (throwing soup on modern, sealed cases or glass barriers instead of the art itself, etc.)
the frames at the Gardner? are art in their own right. they are mostly very old and made by often-unacknowledged craftsmen who were incredibly talented. they're not the same as a modern barrier. AND they're there as a reminder of a time when some jerks stole art from the public so rich assholes could wall it up in private collections so only they got to enjoy it
like go puncture a CEO's tires or something that actually reaches the people responsible for this mess instead of ordinary humans (who probably already agree with you!) just trying to do the very Human Thing of appreciating art
EDIT: I double-checked, and last time their Thing was "why are people still talking about the Gardner heist, but NOBODY is talking about biodiversity loss?!?!?!"
which is just.
they are? just not usually in the same breath as an unsolved art theft case?
#mini-rant#isabella stewart gardner museum#and they're probably going to get all pissy on Twitter about how the museum is 'stifling their right to peaceful protest!!!'#except. you have the right to protest. you don't have the right to jeopardize the museum's property#last time this happened the museum let them protest outside without a peep of objection#(why are you protesting climate change outside an art museum but whatever go nuts)#and the entirety of this very blue and very climate-conscious city was collectively like '...seriously guys?'#it's possible to care about more than one thing at a time!

My Research: Why did you take these photos? These aren't relevant.
Me: They are. In my heart. Vaguely relevant.
My Research: What's with this random tree?
Me: It's a nanakamado.
My Research: And this photo of a photo of some little sprout?
Me: That's taranome.
My Research: It'd be one thing if it was just plants, but why did you take this photo of Togakure ninja training methods? This, among all those other photos?
Me: ...
My Research: "Headbutt Training"?!
#if Tanjiro was a Hashira and provided Hashira training#there was also a bloody photo of helping each other with this against a boulder#i did not interview any ninja#and a lot of this facility was to display old daily objects and crafts#like straw snowboots and bamboo baskets big enough to fit your demon sister inside of#though there are lots of other museums of old daily items and of ninja stuff#if you ever come to Japan please please please venture away from the big cities#there are so many good things to enjoy in the countryside#my exasperated unrelated research#my unrelated exasperated research

Oh hey,
I bet the professor didn't even consider that his sentient AI invention would be capable of complex feelings such as grief.
[Posting both versions because I'm indecisive]
#splatoon#splatoon 2#octo expansion#commander tartar#the professor#my art :o]#professor plz come pick up your mechanical son he is in dire need of companionship & affirmation#I wonder if remains of the professor actually exist in canon.. [probably not his bones but perhaps objects like glasses or his lab coat!]#... maybe the human fossil with the Wii U is the professor lmao jk.. would be funny though#omg imagine the fossil of the professor is being displayed in a museum.. if tartar would find out he'd steal him back#anyways I wanted to draw something rather sentimental this time [and then ruin the vibe in the tags oops]

We'll drink a drink a drink to Lily the Pink, the Pink, the Pink!
Anyone familiar with that song? The lyrics talk about the "medicinal compound" invented by Lily the Pink, and chronicle the "efficacious" cures it has brought about, such as inducing morbid obesity to cure a weak appetite.
Lydia E. Pinkham brand "Vegetable Compound", containing extract of Piscidia Erythrina (Jamaica Dogwood), Asclepias Tuberosa (Pleurisy Root), Cimicifuga Racemosa (Black Cohosh), Vitamin B1, Dandelion, and other ingredients.
Lydia E. Pinkham, née Estes, (1819-1883) was an American proprietor who commodified her homemade herbal-alcoholic supplements, claiming they could cure any “female complaint” from menstrual discomfort to a prolapsed uterus. Pinkham began making her medicine as a home remedy, which she freely shared with family and friends. In 1875, her “Vegetable Compound” made its debut commercial appearance for $1 a bottle. In Pinkham’s life, the business grew from her cellar kitchen to a manufacturing plant that would gross just under $300,000 a year. The product is still sold today in a modified form.
Though medical experts dismissed Pinkham’s products as quack remedies, the supplements’ popularity among women persisted. Aggressive marketing of Pinkham's products contributed to their acceptance by women; slogans such as “Only a woman can understand a woman’s ills,” targeted the many women who were hesitant to consult male physicians about menstruation or other women’s health issues.

We present the Musical automaton from the museum Collection exposition "Little schoolboy in a dunce cap", created by the French master Gustave Vichy circa 1900. The automaton features a figurine of a little boy in school uniform sitting on wooden bench for the delinquent. This funny figure, popular in the French culture at the end of the 19th century, depicts a character from the children's book “Jean Who Grumbles and Jean Who Laughs” by the French writer of the Russian descent, Countess of Ségur (born Sofiya Feodorovna Rostopchina, 1799-1874), written in 1865. Just theoretically, if your style had a character or special associations, how would you describe it? Colorful, thought-provoking at every centimeter, similar in sensations to a mixture of spices, whose taste is revealed in all its glory only to those who delve a little deeper into it? Or maybe it's tart wine, into which from the open window, where the fire of the sunset is visible, flower petals from the garden fall, carried away by the slightly disturbing wind of the foreseeable storm?
If I could choose, I'd say my art smells like old but well kept books and beeswax candles. I respond strongly to the way old wooden buildings and well used Catholic & Orthodox churches smell, but that might be a little too grandiose for what I make.
I don't know about the taste though.
#answered#anonymous#I've worked in a couple of museums and I love the way the storage rooms smell#aged musty objects my beloved
