The river court was empty, the weather had been acting up and the clouds above seemed determined to make the gloomy winter day even gloomier. Her sketchbook was open, the newest drawing staring back at her. Half finished and confusing. Something she had started late one night when she couldn’t sleep, an idea that came to her, but the more she drew it, the less it seemed like anything other than an odd doodle.

Her leather jacket lay abandoned on the bleachers, along with her still-opened sketchbook. She had tried something new with her drawing, some kind of attempt to change something, maybe make it more meaningful, unsure if any of it meant anything. The art book was almost fully doodled in, and at times she wondered if she would look back at these sketches and find them funny or cringe, somehow she couldn’t imagine that future, or maybe couldn’t picture herself as older.

Cheerleading practice would start in less than an hour and she had wondered if it would be fine if she just didn’t show up, ever. Maybe she could fully just reinvent herself, do something else, be someone else. But for all of that, Peyton felt like she would have to be somewhere else.

Living in this same town, she could never be anything else but Peyton Sawyer, where everyone had an idea of who she was, but she was the only unsure one.
