@empiriical ( tick jefferson ) / my-pick starter call. ( maria barcelito )
"Heeeey, amigo!"
Maria pokes the torturer in the back of the head, finger lingering for a second too long to not be a little annoying. "You'll never guess what!"
It probably doesn't matter if Tick guesses correctly; Maria is generally known to get a little impatient about this sort of thing and spoil it anyway. Still, she seems to be in a relatively good mood, which isn't altogether uncommon, but it's a sign that whatever she's doing or has done hasn't been run by Luck just yet.
"Okay, you're really never going to guess, you know. So I'll tell you everything. I made you something!" It's an odd declaration from a person whose most defining trait is destroying things in a particularly violent way, but Maria seems very proud of herself. "So, you're not busy, right? Right? Hey, you're free right now, aren't you? Because I worked pretty hard on it, amigo, and you have to come see."

“I’ll go anywhere you want.” ( for maria ! )
It's an incredibly touching sentiment, so naturally, Maria's first reaction is not to react at all.
It's not as if this would be their first time walking the Path together. However, Maria grows increasingly more aware of the fact that they've never planned to travel together before, not really---every other time, it's been circumstance and convenience. Delightful circumstance, in Maria's eyes, but still circumstance. It wasn't ever an arrangement she'd had any complaints about, not minding the abrupt meetings and departures as much as another might have in her situation.
Unfortunately, while her first instinct is to freeze, her second instinct is to continue talking as normal, which never generally yields results that actually fit the tone of these kinds of conversations, which Maria doesn't really know how to have.
"Well, it's not really about where I want to go, right?" Maria registers shortly after speaking that it sounds a little bit too hash in response to what Ciri had actually said, so she doubles back, a move which is completely unlike her. "Still, I wouldn't mind something like that. Obviously I'd never turn you away!"
atlas I. / accepting.

"Isn't it neat? It's super neat, right?!"
Complimenting her swords seems to have dangerously boosted Maria's ego---she's all smiles in response to the curiosity, not sensing anything off about it at all. Really, she'd been the exact same way about swords and stabbing things as a kid, so there's no reason to question it!
"I have another one, but I found someone reeeeally good to sharpen it a little, so I left it behind today. But you know what, amiga? I do stab a lot of people, with both of them!" It's an incredibly direct answer to give anyone, let alone a child, but Maria's not really concerned by this either. "And it's really fun, so you should definitely keep asking about swords! If you want, I could even teach you a couple things!"
@closedcoffins | starter call
“ corvo always tells me he’s going to teach me how to use a sword , but he never does . ” a pout , followed by the crossing of her arms . emily says such like everyone she speaks to knows who corvo is . when it was simply the fact that she liked the strangers’ sword , and thought it was neat . that she had approached the other .
“ i like your sword , do you stab a lot of people ? ” a strange question for a child to ask , but one could chock it up to a youth’s curiosity . the little one might be strange , but she was definitely genuine , showing great interest in the art of the blade ( and stabbing people with it ) .

What is Maria's favorite season?
that's a good question! thank you for asking it!
i'm personally going to have to say maria's favorite season is fall, and it's honestly just a process of elimination.
winter is too cold for her liking, and cold temperatures can really mess up a sword + scabbard especially if it's below freezing. as someone who takes her katanas everywhere, maria is the sort of person to get disgruntled enough about the inconvenience to dislike winter on principle.
spring is nice, but she has allergies.
summer's just a little too hot. given maria's preferred getup, which is mostly black and made of very thick material, she tends to get winded and overheated easily in fights during the daytime, which is annoying.
and that leaves fall! it's not only the perfect temperature, but it's the lead-in to a lot of holidays that she gets to badger luck into helping her decorate for. not only that, but she likes fall colors the best out of other colors.
unprompted. / accepting.

"The kitchen!" Maria exclaims, like it's obvious. She has been known to spend some time with Berga in the kitchen, of course, but her involvement generally ends in disaster and a mess. That she's not covered head-to-toe in whatever she was making is something of a miracle. "Come on!!"
She grabs his hand, pulling him behind her because she knows she's the faster one. Some of the Gandor men used to rib Tick about this sort of thing happening, but she'd dealt with that a little, so it should be fine.
"It's a little messy in there, but Berga made me clean most of it up while I was waiting for it to cook and stuff. Ugh. It was really boring! I almost died of boredom! But, you know, it's worth it for my mejor amigo, right?"
to tick's credit, he does consider that maybe this isn't a good idea. it's definitely something she shouldn't be doing, or he shouldn't be doing, or something like that... but it's hard to deny maria even when he wants to, && right now, his curiosity is... somewhat piqued.
his tongue stalls as he tries to guess. "ummmmmm...."
luckily, she rushes right in with the answer, so he's not kept waiting for too long. he pauses, scissors stalling in their methodical snipping of the pile of paper in front of him. ( keith had placed them in front of him without a word, which luck had later elaborated on — these particular documents needed to be completely destroyed, && 'it'll keep you busy for a while, i imagine' ).
"okay! sure, maria, let's goooo." he stands up, happy to allow himself to be led along. ".....where exactly are we going?"

"Seems like you really don't know."
For some reason, Graham didn't seem at all worried, and Nico sighed.
"This fella is Ice Pick Thompson."
At those words, Graham blinked for a while, stunned. Then he cocked his head like a confused squirrel. "What are you sayin'? Ice Pick Thompson is..." Then, remembering that Elmer had told him Mark's true identity was a secret, he spun his wrench and rephrased himself. "Ice Pick Thompson is... who?"
"He just told you it's that Smith guy, amigo," Maria said, rolling her eyes.
"Nah, nah, nah. There's no way."
Graham laughed.
"I mean, Smith's a hitman, but he's never killed a soul."
Silence fell again.
Everyone looked rather uncomfortable, and their eyes automatically turned towards Smith.
Smith himself breathed deeply as if he'd made up his mind about something...
...and then he stated himself simply.
"I am Ice Pick Thompson. That's a fact."
"Chief?"
Graham's eyes had gone wide with surprise, while Nico's narrowed further.
"Well, well... So you admit it?"
"Yeah. I've stabbed four men to death. Haven't gotten the fifth one yet, though."
"Smith, are you okay? Did you hit your head or something?!"
"...?"
Smith's unusual confession had confused Graham further, while Nico stopped moving and took another look at the hitman.
Under their gazes, Smith smiled quietly. His reply was calm.
"It's true. That wasn't a job... It was revenge."

Luck side glances towards Maria. " . . . do you care to inform me why there are several tears in this wallpaper? " He had his theories about why the recently - purchased wallpaper already looks to have gone through a war zone, but he'll give her the chance to defend herself. The hope of defending herself, at least.
"Berga knows! He was there!"
Throwing Luck's brother under the bus hadn't exactly been Maria's plan, but she'd actually forgotten about the earlier scuffle that had taken place while Luck and Keith were out dealing with important things. To be completely one-hundred-percent fair, she'd actually thought Berga would probably tell them both right away, but she guesses they haven't had much of a chance to interact. Berga's probably still roughing that guy up, after all.
"It really wasn't my fault this time, amigo. I reacted like anyone would, and anyways most of the stuff that's knocked-over was his fault and not mine. I only scratched the wallpaper because the guy I was trying to slash was pretty quick, so I missed a few times. I thought he was gonna tell you all about it when you got back, but he's probably still caving his face in or something. Anyways, the full story is someone tried to get violent with Miss Edith and I helped deal with him. So it's not my fault!"
unprompted. / always accepting.

“Nice one, amigo! I was aiming for your wrist!”
“Don’t slash at your amigos.”
“Sorry, this katana just moves on its own!”
Rebutting the comeback she’d already heard several times, the Mexican girl took some distance and repositioned her sword.
“If you can manage it, just surrender, alright? Killing amigas isn’t my thing.”
“Aaah! You’re making fun of me because I’m a woman! You’re gonna make me mad, amigo!”
No sooner had she spoken than the silver gleam became a streak, racing through the air.
Shaiiiing.
The sound of metal scraping against metal rang out, and the blade of the katana stopped just before it hit Vino’s neck.
...
Huh? Why’d it stop?!
The girl’s eyes had gone round, and Vino answered her indifferently. His eyes were growing sharper and sharper.
“I don’t make fun of people because they’re women or kids. There are strong women out there, and I’m nuts about one of ‘em.”
Starting a conversation that didn’t directly relate to the situation, Vino slid the scissors he was holding farther up the blade.
The katana was caught between the scissor blades, and she couldn’t move it sideways.
“I’m actually making fun of you because you’re weak.”
A Japanese katana, stopped by scissors? Impossible; she couldn’t let that happen. Even in her confusion, the attacker didn’t doubt her conviction. Quickly, the Latina let go with her right hand, supporting the katana with her left hand alone. In the next instant, she’d gripped the hilt of her other katana, and no sooner had she drawn it than she tried to slash through her opponent’s stomach.
Scree scree--scree--scree--screeee...
The sound of metal on metal.
Vino had taken out another pair of shears with his left hand. He was stopping both katana with scissors and nothing else.
“I see. That katana really doesn’t know how to behave.”

❛ if we're discussing jails, i've been in one for several millennia already. ❜
"Well, that's no good. You're out though, right? Hey, right? Well, you'd have to be out if you're talking to me, hahaha!"
Laughing a little childishly, Maria plops her head down into her hands, which in turn lend most of their weight to her elbows on the table. "In any case, that's why you just have to be super-strong, you know? For example, if they ever did put me in jail for anything, I would just cut through the bars with my katana, you know?"
Describing something impossible, Maria doesn't even seem to bat an eye at her own audacity. Of course, considering some of her other ambitions, it's likely that Maria actually does think she could cut through prison bars with an ordinary sword. Considering some things she has managed to cut through, it's not really that much of a stretch to assume.
"Things like that are just too boring. It'd be a little more bearable if you got to do fun things in there," even if her definition of 'fun' is a little warped, "but there's just really nothing good about it at all."
the slash! / accepting.

OPEN STARTER : MARIA BARCELITO
"Heeeeey, amigo!!"
The woman calls out excitedly, using her free hand to cup her mouth so the sound carries further, though she'd shouted plenty loud to begin with. In her other hand, she holds a well-kept katana, though she doesn't seem to be ready to attack with it.
"Yeah, you!! Wanna see something really neat?"
