The quarian's ass was already heavy and wide enough that the chair beneath her creaked from the weight with any movement. - "I managed to convince the Turian embassy that in order to better interact with them I need to become more familiar with the peculiarities of their languages and writing, and to appoint a couple dozen of their ambassadors as my assistants in this endeavor. But other than that, they're doing a fine job of plumping my ass~"

Destiny’s Fate (update) (main story)

Chapter:  What I Need

Excerpt:

“Commander, the salarian dalatrass and the krogan leader both request permission to come aboard.”

Jane stood in front of the mirror in her bathroom as she placed the final pins in her hair to keep it out of her face.  Popping her head first to the right and then to the left to ease the tension that just wouldn’t go away, she tapped her comm and replied, “Please inform Primarch Victus, Traynor, then have Vega and Cortez escort the dalatrass and Wrex to the conference room.  I’ll be down in a moment.”

“Should that be an armed escort, commander?”

Jane fought against a smirk as best she could, but she caught the twitch of her lips in the reflection in front of her.  Traynor had just the right amount of sass to get away with it in moments like this.  Then again, she wasn’t wrong, either, and that was the more sobering thought.  “On second thought, have Cortez escort the dalatrass up.  Vega can wait with Wrex for the second run.  I’ll grab one of the maintenance ducts to get down.”

“Understood, commander.”

Jane exited her room, finding the access point to her right just outside her door.  As she descended the ladder, she pressed her comm again.  “Kaidan?”

His response was immediate.  “I’m here.”

“Cortez is escorting the dalatrass to the conference room and Victus should be there momentarily.”

“And Wrex?”

“Vega will bring him up after.”  She reached the bottom of the ladder and hunched over, making her way through the access tube.  “I’m on my way now.  Could you meet them at the conference room?”

A soft chuckle filtered across the connection.  Just a hint before he cleared his throat.  “Just in case?”

Jane couldn’t fault him there.  They both knew Wrex well.  “Just in case.”

“Don’t worry, commander, I’m on my way.”

Behold, the Halloween Hamshep!

Suddenly, Tali's omni-tool pinged. When she opened the message, she vibrated with excitement and emitted an honest-to-goodness squeal. "What is it?" Shepard asked. She shimmied awkwardly to try and glance Tali's tool display. "Your mother upheld her promise to meeeeeee," Tali sang. "Shepard, you're sooooo cute!" The commander's stomach flipped as she finally saw the image display: sure enough, it was a photo of Shepard's seventh Halloween, sporting a space hamster costume--complete with headband ears, face paint, a themed onesie, and a bulbous faux-space helmet. Seven-year-old Shepard flashed a wide grin, revealing numerous missing teeth. Her freckles were obscured by the costume make-up, and her red hair was pulled back in a hairtie. "Oh wow, I haven't seen that pic in a long time," Shepard chuckled. Fragments of childhood memories bubbled pleasantly to her attention: SSV Einstein crewmates handing out candy to the on-board military brats; the taste of too-much sugar and the exhilaration of sugar-high dancing; her father teaching her and several other kids how to play candy poker… "Shepard! This was for a human holiday right? Right?" "Halloween. Tali, I didn't dress like a hamster everyday," Shepard laughed. "Halloween! That's what your mother said. It seems so fun. Even with our suits, I'm sure my childhood friends and I would've loved a holiday to play dress-up," Tali mused brightly. "I imagine you'd all fight for the right to dress as Shalei," the commander smirked. "Oh, and I'd win," Tali replied. She seemed to relish in the idea, eliciting a heartfelt chuckle from Shepard. "What would you win?" Garrus asked. He rejoined the women on the couch with a curious expression on his face. "Garrus! Garrus, look! It's hamster Shepard! Hamshep? ...Hamshep!" Tali quickly tapped on her omni-tool (and ignored the turian's initial question). The paused Fleet and Flotilla documentary minimized on the display--replaced by a cast of the Halloween picture.

Shepard watched her boyfriend's mandibles flare widely as his comet blue eyes grew. Tali clapped excitedly. The commander felt her face grow redder. She flipped her N7 hood on and pulled the drawstring. Little tendrils of scarlet hair still snaked out the sides of the drawn hoodie.

"Is there a story behind Hamshep? Or was this just a thing you did as a kid, Shepard?" Garrus's voice trilled with delight.

Tali interjected before Shepard could respond: "It was for the human holiday, Halloween!"

"Well, I'm a fan," Garrus said. His attention was split between the screened photo and his girlfriend who was disappearing into her hoodie as she seemed to try and melt into the couch completely. Still grinning stupidly, he hooked a blunted talon around Shepard's hood and pulled it loose to better look at his partner's rosy face.

"C'mon, Shepard. The first human Spectre can't be that embarrassed by a childhood pic." "Shut it, Vakarian." Garrus leaned in gleefully and replied, "How can I when you're so cute?" Shepard snorted derisively--but Tali hugged her pillow and squealed in a way not unlike how she reacted to several scenes between Bellicus and Shalei.

"Can we get back to the documentary, please?" Shepard pleaded.

As if on queue, Tali's omni-tool pinged again. The quarian practically screamed.

"Keelah! Screw the documentary, I know what we're doing now thanks to one Admiral Hannah Shepard," Tali said. Shepard watched with apprehension--and Garrus with delight--as Tali navigated to an attached folder in a short message from Shepard's mother that read:

Heard you're my daughter's newest Citadel roommate! The Orizaba crew will miss you when we head out next week--but I'm sure you, my daughter, and Mister Vakarian are happy to have time together outside of galactic existential threats. I managed to put together a little Jane slideshow for you. Stay safe and stay healthy!

"Oh no," Shepard muttered.

"Oh yes," Tali sang. She opened the folder and was thrilled to find ten more photos, along with a short vid file. Garrus put a hand on Shepard's thigh, wordlessly asking her what was wrong with a tilt of his head. His partner noticed the gesture and forcibly relaxed.

"Oh, fine. Go ahead, let's see what my mother has in store for us," Shepard muttered. Her face remained apprehensive--but a brandy-breathed nuzzle from her turian boyfriend did upturn her lips into a wanton smile. Tali immediately opened the file and began going through the photos, one by one.

N7 Month 2020

Day One: Red

Doing this a bit out of order as I catch up.  Happy N7 day!

2020 N7 Prompt Challenge AO3 Collection

Two blurs of red orbited each other in a tightening blur against the green-gold grass.  From the attic of the sprawling farmhouse, they seemed the same size, spiraling closer and closer until they coalesced into a single blob with a peal of high-pitched child’s laughter.  

Hannah Shepard stood at the window, holding back the curtain with her hand.  Her grandson’s legs flung out in careless abandon as her daughter spun him round and round.  

“Such beautiful copper hair,” mused one of her daughter’s in-laws; Hannah couldn’t keep them straight.  “Genetics are infinitely surprising.”

Referring, of course, to the darker looks of most of the Alenko clan.  Hannah made a tching sound.  “Everyone in my family’s a redhead.  It’s a tenacious gene.”

The woman chuckled, and went back to folding away blankets.  Hannah continued to watch the scene below.  Tenacious, indeed.  This was not a sight she’d ever imagined.  Much less hoped for.  She was not, herself, the most family-oriented of individuals.  But of course she’d loved her daughter.  Of course she had.

And she’d lost her.  Twice.

That first time Hannah still didn’t quite understand.  She lost her ship.  She lost her life?  Impossible to believe, and yet, it paled before the alternative, that her daughter let them go on believing her dead for two long years.  And the second—

The second…

Hannah licked her lips.  Swallowed, once.  

She never met Kaidan until that comm link.  A part of her still marveled at that, all these years later, that in the middle of all that desperate uncertainty, he found a moment to locate her and let her know what he’d found in the ruin of the Citadel.  It spoke deeply to the character of the man her daughter had chosen. Truth be told, he was the first of any of her partners to impress Hannah in any way.  

Seeing her daughter lying in that dreadnought ICU…

Hannah’s hand went, unconsciously, to her own graying hair, a few broad streaks of red still shining through.  Her husband had grumbled, when their daughter was born.  As soon as I saw that hair, I knew she’d be trouble.  And god knew that proved true.  

A bad memory, long consigned.  Hannah gave herself a shake and let the curtain fall away.  Dumb luck was the only reason any of them stood here today. Dumb luck, or providence.  She’d stopped caring long ago.  What mattered were those two redheads on the lawn, laughing like the world had never been more perfect.

Hannah would bless that any day.

i’m finally bringing a shepard onto my blog!!! i’m still learning about her as i play through the games, but i’ve got a basic outline for who she is as a person now that i’ve had a day of playing her file. i’ll get around to writing a page for her once i’m finished with all three games and will add her to my muse roster later today most likely, but until then here’s a basic outline of jo:

( father, deceased ), john shepard ( older brother, alive -- may potentially change his name when i make a mshep but for now john works ) - personality: jo has always been a listener more than a talker. ever since she was a kid, she would be quiet and listen to what was going on around her rather than contribute to the chaos that children normally bring like her brother. she prefers to have all the facts ( or as many facts as possible ) before contributing to a serious conversation or making any decisions. this doesn’t mean she was a recluse by any means -- she had friends and went out with them, and still does when she has a moment in between missions. she’s just much more introverted than someone might expect from the great commander shepard. as she was made the first human spectre and granted responsibility beyond comprehension ( stopping saren and, eventually, the collectors and reapers ), this tendency of hers makes her much more level headed about stressful situations than it might’ve made her brother, who was always an action-first type of person. jo very rarely loses her temper, but when she does it’s almost always on the people she’s chasing for the mission or any side quests along the way. the people who get most of her ire usually ends up being udina or the council; though she tries to remain polite on mission reports, she has absolutely grown frustrated over the council doubting her abilities and hung up on them in the middle of a call. as time goes on, she feels less and less bad about it. if she loses her temper on someone she considers a friend, she gives herself a little space before finding them again and apologizing, not wanting any sourness to rest between them.  as a commander, she is very sure of her actions, though the normandy crew would probably agree she has something of a hero complex. their main task is to capture saren and stop the geth, but often they go out of their way to obscure planets to stop rogue VIs and the like. some of this is for the sake of her squad members ( such as finding wrex’s family armor or completing tali’s pilgrimage ), but most of these side quests are just jo trying to leave a good mark on the world. while an admirable goal, she really needs to learn to take a break -- good luck to whoever gets tasked with trying to slow johana shepard down for a day. she’ll take a break when she’s dead.

    “JASON BARTHOLOMEW SHEPARD!”

    “Oh, here we go, she used the full name”

    “Bartholomew?” Kaidan asked, trying not to laugh at the name.

    “It was my grandfather’s name, c’mon K, don’t be mean-oOF!” Jason was cut off by his mother who had just reached them and in lieu of berating her son, gathered him up in a strong hug.

    “Do you know how long it’s been since you’ve sent word to me young man?”

    “I’m not really a young man anymore, Mom-”

    “Three years, four months, and 27 days, Jason,” She said, gripping him tighter.

    “I-I’m sorry Mom,” He said hesitantly, hugging her back.

    “You’re damn right you’re sorry! Now you better buy me dinner and show how sorry you are,” She said finally pulling back far enough to look him in the eye. Jason knew he wasn’t out of the fire yet, but that glint in her eye told him that she wasn’t truly mad, just worried half to death with all the reports about the Normandy’s misadventures.

    “And what kind of son doesn’t introduce me to this poor awkward looking man,” Hannah admonished when she noticed Kaidan standing there. Both boys spoke at once going to introduce him but Kaidan won out, stiffening into a proper salute.

    “Kaidan Alenko, an honor to meet you Rear Admiral Shepard,” he said. At this Hannah could only chuckle, seeing as he was trying to be so formal after seeing her in such an informal state.

    “Please Major Spectre Alenko, there’s no need for any of that. I’m not your commanding officer now am I? Shake my hand properly Kaidan,” she said, extending her hand. Jason was watching all of this with a smile, wondering if he would cave and tell his mother about his relationship or if she would figure it out by how awkward Kaidan was during dinner.

    “Ah, yes ma’am, thank you,” he said, shaking her hand.

    “Mom, we were about to head up to Apollos if you wanted to join us? I know it’s nothing amazing but-”

    “What is amazing? Especially during wartime. I’m just glad to not be eating ship’s rations, boys,” Hannah joked, looping her arm around her son, gently steering the three of them back towards the elevator.

    “After dinner I can show you the apartment Admiral Anderson is letting me borrow while we’re on forced shore leave. I’ve got a nice Batarian shard wine,” Jason offered.

    “Oh, you and your shard wine, Jason, I appreciate the offer but you know I won’t drink that,” Hannah replied. “How about you, Kaidan? Also a shard wine drinker?” she asked.

    “Not quite, ma’am. I’m a fan of a good ol’ Canadian lager and a shot of whiskey myself.” he answered.

    “Ooh a real manly man huh? I’m kidding, haven’t had any good whiskey since I got shipped out into space for the first time,” Hannah said, winking at Kaidan.

    “We managed to find some Peruvian whiskey, costs an arm and a leg to get though,” Jason said, remembering his get-well gift to Kaidan while he was in the hospital.

    “I can only imagine, do you have any left?” Hannah asked hopefully.

    “We should, we stocked up pretty well for the party for the crew,” Jason mused.

    “You never mentioned that it was so expensive,” Kadian said, also remembering that gift.

    “Of course I didn’t mention it, K. It was a gift, don’t worry about it,” Jason said back-tracking. Hannah just gave the both of them a bemused look before changing the subject.

    “C’mon boys, lead me to this Apollos, I’m normally on a different ward of the Citadel,” she said, tugging Jason’s arm.

    “Oh, yeah sure Mom, it’s just this way. They’ve got a really nice view of the Presidium from the outdoor seating,” Jason said, thankful for the distraction, however the look on Kaidan’s face made sure Jason knew that the conversation about the whiskey wasn’t quite over. Kaidan approached on his other side and said quietly to Jason.

    “I can see where you get your great sense of redirection from,” he said, to Jason’s fake shock and dismay. Jason knew it was absolutely true, but that doesn’t mean he’d ever admit that.

    “So Kaidan, I know you were on the original Normandy with my boy. He got so busy after Eden Prime he never called me, tell me all about what you were doing. Was he keeping up with his laundry?” Hannah asked.

    “Mom!” Jason complained, “I’m 32 years old for Christ’s sake. Trust me, I do my own laundry,”

    “That doesn’t mean that laundry has expanded beyond your fatigues in the last three years. It took far too much convincing and persuasion in order to make you get that jacket, if you’ll recall,” Kaidan admonished.

    “Not you too, K!” Jason said with shock as his mother and boyfriend began laughing at him.
