PASTOR ED AND MR BO JANGLES

I used to clean houses on my days off, which is the second oldest profession and has its benefits, as well.Anyway, I worked at a retirement home down in Muscoda;  I'd go in there on my Thursdays off and clean about five apartments; sometimes more if my daughter would come and help me. The place was managed by Pastor Ed and his wife, Millie. They were Pentecostal.  

Pastor Ed farmed and wore bib overalls, Millie was a long-dress lady, of course, and she wore her hair up in a bun. She wouldn't dream of cutting her hair. Some of my friends now would never cut their hair either; I am thinking of certain Navajo and Jewish ladies here. They have a point.

Once a month on Thursdays the retirement home people would  have potluck and everyone could come and visit over a meal. I would bring my fiddle and sometimes my Aunt Ruby would come up with her friends. One of them was a left-handed fiddler, as I recall.  I had my old fiddle then, which had rounded-off pegs, a doozy to keep in tune, but I managed and we had a lot of fun. Pastor Ed played guitar.

Now, Pastor Ed was also a horse trainer, and he was presently training a mule colt named Mr. Bo Jangles. At the time, I was very favorable to that mule, and wanted to take him home after Pastor Ed trained him. But, living on Hawkins Creek, I had no pasture or place for him.Well, one day Pastor Ed was working with that mule colt in a corral. He had a lead rope or lunge line or something on him. The mule spotted an open gate and bingo! He was moving! Pastor Ed moved quickly to snub the lead rope to a fence post, got his hand in there somehow and just like that! The mule pulled and popped the top of Ed's finger off.He recovered well, and he could still bar chords with that finger.

By and by he sold Mr. Bo for $800 to some farmers. I felt bad, but lo and behold, the neighbors a few miles down the road from us bought him! Now my daughter and her friends did relief milkings for that couple, as those people were urbanites originally and hadn't considered that farming is more than full time. That was okay, because they paid the girls to milk on weekends.  Occasionally, my daughter would get stuck with the job herself and needed help. Payback for the cleaning jobs. She would ride over to my place on the dancing horse they had there, and lead Mr. Bo Jangles for me to ride.

He was a flop-eared thing, easy-going except for the finger incident, which was really nobody's fault -  and liked dogs, too. He had a light snaffle bit, no super controls for him. He had a saddle somewhere, but my daughter couldn't ever locate it. Mules need a different sized saddle than horses, but, never mind. I just used Luke's roofing chalk line to resin up his back and there I stuck. He had kind of a rough gait compared to the dancing horse, but you can't have everything.

 Dillon Dog was very partial to horses, he'd been raised with them before we got him. The dancing horse huffed him off, but we are all entitled to our own opinion. Mr. Bo's attentions made up for the snub. Dillon Dog got to run along with us, we knew he'd stay by the mule and we took the back roads. I heard a few years back that Pastor Ed had died, but I hope Mr. Bo is still in the land of the living.

'I was hearing evil voices:' Iowa Co. man accused of killing mother and dog says he was possessed May 24, 2021 1:40 PM Jaymes Langrehr Posted: May 24, 2021 1:40 PM Updated: May 24, 2021 5:41 PM AVOCA, Wis. — The man accused of beating and stabbing his mother and dog to death at their Iowa County home says he was “hearing evil voices” and “blacked out” before the murder. “There was people inside my head saying that once I kill them, that I will go rest,” Sean Pickett allegedly told police, according to the criminal complaint filed in Iowa County court. Pickett is being charged with one count of first degree intentional homicide in the death of his mother, Susan Pickett, and one count of mistreatment of animals in the death of his dog, Chico. Pickett originally called police on May 10th saying his mom and dog were dead. When Avoca Police Chief Dan Carey arrived at the home, he says he saw Pickett with dried blood on his pants, shoes and the front of his shirt. Carey put Pickett into protective custody and called for help from the Iowa County Sheriff’s Department and the Muscoda Police Department. When they got to the scene, police found Susan Pickett’s body in a large pool of dried blood in a bedroom, with bruising across her head and face and blood splattered on the ceiling and wall of the bedroom. A large pitbull was also found dead with multiple wounds to the chest. In an interview with special agents from the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation, Pickett allegedly told investigators he was “possessed” by evil voices he was hearing in his head. “Just about a day or so ago, I woke up with evil inside,” Pickett told investigators. “They said, they maked [sic] me believe I was dead and did not think this was real. The evil in my head said I had to kill my mom and Chico in order to go to peace. In order to find rest.” Pickett told investigators he told the voices he wasn’t going to kill his mother and dog, but he then went in and out of blacking out. He then told investigators he stabbed his mother in the throat multiple times and beat her with a metal bar.
