The Good Party decided on Monday not to collaborate with the main opposition Republican People’s Party, CHP in the upcoming local elections on March 31, 2024 – a blow to hopes of opposition unity against Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“Our general executive board has decided that our Good Party will enter the 2024 local elections freely and independently,” Good Party spokesperson Kursad Zorlu told reporters on Monday after a daylong meeting.
During the general executive board meeting of the party, 35 members voted against the CHP proposal while 14 voted in favour.
A united opposition bloc won Turkey’s major cities in the 2019 local elections. These victories included the economic powerhouse of Istanbul, the capital, Ankara, and the industrial and tourism centres of Izmir, Antalya and Adana.
Ozgur Ozel, newly-elected leader of the CHP, had offered a new alliance for the 2024 local elections.
But Meral Aksener, leader of the Good Party, the second party in the now-defunct opposition Nation Alliance, proclaimed the alliance’s end following the opposition’s humiliating defeat in general and presidential elections in May this year by President Erdogan and his People’s Alliance.
Observers say that a recreated opposition alliance would be the only way to win again in major Turkish cities against an emboldened Erdogan.
The Good Party acknowledges the risk of providing a great chance for Erdogan to win the major cities back in 2024.
“To win Turkey in the period that follows, we take the risk of losing some municipalities,” Musavat Dervisoglu, the Good Party’s parliamentary group deputy chairman, said on Monday in a TV interview.
The Good Party was split on whether or not to join the opposition alliance.
The party’s central administration was against the idea, but party branches and some senior names were for the alliance.
The party has been shaken by resignations of senior names in recent months, such as the popular Yavuz Agiralioglu, former Central Bank governor Durmus Yilmaz and constitutional law expert Bahadir Erdem.
Idris Nebi Hatipoglu, a former Good Party lawmaker, joined Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party, AKP after resigning. Another Good Party lawmaker, Adnan Beker, has also resigned and is expected to join the AKP.
The CHP has not made any announcement since the Good Party’s decision not to join the opposition alliance.

[Eurasianet receives funding from the NED, OSF, the FCDO, & others]
Iran’s military is conducting large-scale military drills on its border with Azerbaijan, including practicing crossings of the Aras River, which defines a large part of the border between the two states.[...]
The drills come as Iran has been stepping up its diplomatic warnings to Baku about Azerbaijan’s intentions for a new transport link connecting Azerbaijan’s exclave of Nakhchivan with the Azerbaijani mainland, a route that Baku calls the “Zangezur corridor.” The route would pass along Armenia’s border with Iran, with uncertain consequences for Armenia-Iran commerce.[...]
It comes as tensions in the region are growing on several fronts. In August, apparently in response to Iran’s regular warnings about the Zangezur corridor, Azerbaijani pro-government media began attacking Iran on a deeply sensitive issue, encouraging the large ethnic Azerbaijani minority in the country to secede. [...]
After its infowar threats stoking separatism two months earlier, Baku has been noticeably quieter in the days since this exercise began. There has been no official comment, and pro-government media have been downplaying the story. [...] (One piece, in the pro-government Musavat, was an exception and did not minimize the issue, calling it “a very serious provocation and threat. With this, the Iranian side is demonstrating that it is ready to encroach on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan.”)[...]
While Tehran has for some time been warning Azerbaijan about its threats to Armenia, in recent days its talking points have incorporated a new perceived threat in the Caucasus: the “European military presence.”[...]
How the European presence in Armenia may change Iran’s strategic calculations remains to be seen. But Armenia continues to count on support from Tehran. A delegation of members of Armenia’s parliament visited Tehran on October 13 and met with several senior Iranian government officials, including Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian.

"Prior to the Russian Revolution, when Azerbaijan was part of the tsar’s domain, the leading Azerbaijani nationalist, ʿAlī bay Huseynzada, exhorted his followers to “Turkify, Islamicize, Europeanize” in order to emphasize ethnic pride, religious devotion, and modernization. The colours associated with those principles were light blue (a traditional Turkish flag colour), green (the colour of the Islamic faith in Turkey), and red (also a traditional Turkish and Islamic colour). A flag with the three colours in horizontal stripes was used from 1917 by his Musavat Party.“ -Whitney Smith, Britannica.com After sporting a typically Soviet flag while part of the USSR, it was readopted on February 5, 1991. #Azərbaycan müxalifətinin əsas uğursuzluğu həqiqi siyasətlə idealizm arasında ilişib qalması oldu. Elə bütün məğlubiyyətlər də bu fonda baş verdi. Halbuki, ideal adlandırılan siyasətin özü də idealizmi qəbul etmir və bütün gedişlərin reallıqlar üzərində qurulmasını təşviq edir. Reallıq ilə idealist hisslər arasında qalan müxalifətin vəziyyəti, depressiyaya düşmüş insanı xatırladır. Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is located in the southern caucasus region in western Asia. The population is majority muslim, however the state does not have an official religion and the larger political parties are secular. In the 16th century the Safavid dynasty controlled the territory; they were an Iranian dynasty of Kurdish origin. During this period the Safavid dynasty converted most of the population to Shia islam, which still represents the majority of the muslim population. In the 19th century the Russian empire conquered large parts of the Caucasus region and remained in control until the collapse of the Russian empire during WW1. Musavat, the countries’ oldest political party, declared the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic independent in may of 1918. Many advancements happened during this period, including the establishment of a state university and extending suffrage to women. Soon after in 1920, the USSR invaded Azerbaijan due to the country’s immense wealth in oil. During WW2 the oil from Azerbaijan fuelled the soviet war effort and approximately 1/5th of the population fought and aided in the war effort. Azerbaijan declared independence from the Soviet Union October 18 1991, two months prior to the collapse of the soviet union. Today Azerbaijan is considered an authoritarian regime by the freedom house democracy index, with the Aliyev family controlling the high ranks in the government and major economic power.
The Azerbaijani flag has three horizontal stripes of blue, red, and green with a crescent and an eight point star on the red central line. The blue stripe represents the country’s Turkic heritage, the red for progress, and green for the muslim majority. The crescent and the star are also considered references to the country’s muslim majority, however the eight point star is also representative of the eight letters used to spell Azerbaijan in Arabic or the eight Turkic ethnic groups that inhabit the country. The flag has a proportional ratio of 1:2, which is the second most common ration for flags. This iteration of the flag was adopted in 2004 to more closely resemble the colours from the flag from Azerbaijan’s brief independence from 1918 to 1920.
I enjoy the Azerbaijani flag. I think that the symbolism behind each element of the flag really shows the country's distinct and vibrant history. The flag is distinct and colourful, but is not overwhelming with it’s design. I do also appreciate the choice to adjust the appearance of the flag to more closely resemble the flag from the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. I rate this flag an 8/10.
