Muriel Grossmann – Devotion
If someone played you saxophonist Muriel Grossmann‘s 2023 album Devotion and said it was a lesser-known organ and psych-soul-jazz album from the late ’60s, you might just believe them. It’s an evocative vibe the European instrumentalist has been perfecting for over a decade and which she brings to new levels here. The album, which marks her debut for Jack White’s Third Man Records, essentially finds her splitting the difference between 2018’s Coltrane-inspired Golden Rule and the organ-soaked approach of 2019’s Reverence. Helping her achieve this spiritual combination is her longtime quartet with guitarist Radomir Milojkovic, Hammond B-3 organist Abel Boquera, and drummer Uros Stamenkovic. Grossmann also displays her versatility, playing, at various times, flute, the stringed kalimba, harmonium, and sundry percussion instruments throughout the album. Together, she and her band conjure an earthy, spice-filled atmosphere that brings to mind the classic sound of albums by Grant Green, Charles Earland, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. With her big, full-throated tone and spiraling riffs, Grossmann also often recalls the style of Argentine saxophonist Gato Barbieri. Songs like the opening “Absolute Truth” and the title track have a funky, globally inspired sound that mixes swinging modal jazz with Latin- and Afro-Cuban-sounding rhythms. Equally engaging are cuts like “Calm,” with its slow groove and twangy guitar, and the hard-driving “All Heart,” both of which sound impossibly like John Coltrane playing with Malian desert blues outfit Tinariwen. – Matt Collar/AllMusic.

Muriel Grossmann, “Morning” (Dreamland 2019) | New pull from a late-last year release (h/t Toni Greenland’s review in the March issue of the invaluable New York City Jazz Record) by an Austrian tenor/soprano saxophonist. Her playing is highly indebted to classic Coltrane but her full-on embrace of more traditional dance-jazz rhythms resonates something much Earthier and funkier — which would make this a good time to mention that she lives in Ibiza, so maybe there’s something in the trash-rave atmosphere that inspires her. Reverence, the first album of Grossmann’s decade-plus-long career that I’ve heard, is a rhythmic powerhouse, beginning to end. Often, her band — organist Llorenç Barceló, guitarist Radomir Milojkovic, bassist Gina Schwarz and drummer Uros Stamenkovic — plays the electric juggernaut underneath Grossmann’s blowing, like if you placed Trane over a small, locked-in early-‘70s Miles ensemble. But then on a few tracks, and “Morning” is my favorite among them, Barceló and Milojkovic share the lead and the context changes to an intense-but-laidback organ-guitar-tenor sprawl, gritty but sinewy, stoned in a variety of directions, group-playing more than solo excursions, purposeful in their devotions to audience needs, but also to the funk. Eleven-plus minutes absolutely fly by, and I want it to happen again and again.

Muriel Grossmann - Universal Code
LINER NOTES OF UNIVERSAL CODE BY THOM JUREK
Since 2007, saxophonist and composer Muriel Grossmann has been releasing albums of uncommon quality and depth. After arriving in Ibiza from Barcelona in 2004, she has created a distinctively individual approach to spiritual jazz. Building on a sound developed in the 1960s by the Coltranes and others, Grossmann's approach joins African music, modal jazz, gospel, blues, free-jazz and Eastern traditions with a fluid, nearly elastic polyrhythmic sensibility.
The Paris-born, Vienna-raised Grossmann believes our evolution towards enlightenment is already engraved in our being, our humanity. While physical DNA evidences it biologically, our path according to Buddhist belief, no matter how many lifetimes we inhabit, always moves towards an awakening that transcends, and ultimately frees us from DNA's biological limitations. Music, a form of communication that exists beyond spoken language transcends its own formally notated DNA. Grossmann employs her experiential and learned musical and life knowledge, linking them to a profound desire to ease the suffering of others, and to encourage evolution toward enlightenment and freedom.
This music on Universal Code is long on contemplative, instrumental dexterity, as well as harmonic and rhythmic invention. Its spiritual aspirations are articulated via interrogative melodies, poignant solos, and interwoven grooves that resonate inside the listener's ears, mind, and body. Universal Code features Grossmann's quartet on six tracks that bookend three ("Transience," "Essence," and "Non-Duality"), with a quintet that includes double bassist Gina Schwarz. Belgrade-born guitarist Radomir Milojkovic has been working with Grossmann since 2002. His rounded tone and endless curiosity add immeasurably to the group's questing approach. Serbian drummer Uros Stamenkovic and double bassist Gina Schwarz (herself an Austrian bandleader and recording artist) joined for 2016's Natural Time, trademarking the collective's unique approach. In 2018, Hammond B-3 organist Llorenç Barcelo, from the neighbouring island Mallorca, joined the band, appearing on 2019's Reverence, 2020’s Quiet Earth and 2021’s Union....
These musicians communicate an aural, instructive journey through emotions, spiritual states, doubt, and awareness collectively and individually. Universal Code is an achievement. It frames their utterances, questions and discoveries in a visionary yet warmly welcoming approach that exponentially extends the spiritual jazz tradition in the 21st century.
