Clean up your trash Glossu - you're familiar with the concept, even if you're not very good at ensuring it happens without your today Kelly Teg to dump the shit in the back of the truck

People can change. This much is evidence: on my most recent reread of Dune Messiah I enjoyed Duncan Idaho's presence.

chapter house dune is 300 pages of interesting but kinda dry introspection from different fictional philosophical schools, then the worst thing you've ever read, then 100 pages of pure kino 5D political chess, and then murbella wins five martial arts deathmatches in a row by kicking people so hard they die

chapterhouse dune!
- first page and we've already got a miles teg ghola a la duncan, and odrade (now mother superior) quipping about presiding over the birth of her own father. anyone who's made it this far into the series isn't gonna be put off by immediate wild weirdness i guess, and i'm sure not.
- the honoured matres have been going on a death star rampage for several years now, and the bene gesserits are racing to terraform chapterhouse into a dune planet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- ...fed to captive What, Now??????? frank, is this just outright turning into a porno at this point????????
Tumblr media
- there's something bittersweet about how odrade's raising young miles teg as her own, in a way that's still pretty distant and sisterhood-ey but lightyears better than the typical bene gesserit way, all because she's a broken reverend mother - she's got a crack in her chassis that lets the humanity out, just a little, in a way that would never normally be allowed of someone in her position.
- if there's any hope at all for the bene gesserits, it's in odrade and young miles.
- somehow, at some point, scytale has joined the party! i was hoping this old shapeshifter wasn't just a name drop in the last book! they're apparently the last tleilaxu master, though, so that probably implies why they're here.
- duncan and murbella's ♠ thing is apparently still going strong. good for them?

So I absolutely loved the first two books and really liked children but I've been struggling pretty hard to get through god emperor. In my opinion this is the low point in the series so far. Does it get easier/better in the last 2?
I'd say that's a very common experience. I had a hard time too because i didn't really like the sudden jump forward and all the changes that happened to Arrakis and the empire. Not to mention the god-emperor is creepy af and most of the time you don't get what he's saying.
Just hang in there, the book gets realy weird and i didn't really understand it the first time but rereading the plot on wikipedia and other sources helped me figure out what was going on in that little worm head of leto ii. it's not my favorite either but it has its charms and most importantly it's crucial to understand what happens in the final two books (another time skip incoming)
The last two books are not everyones favorites but personally i liked them, especially Heretics of Dune. They are very much focused on the bene gesserit, with the main characters all being part of the sisterhood, so if you liked them you're in for a ride! and also i like to imagine the atmosphere more gloomy and kind of gothic? but there are also worms and the desert and a lot of elements from the classic dune :)

I was musing on how Gency might work out in an Infinite Seer!Mercy AU and had to slap myself in the face before I accidentally recreated Duncan Idaho/Murbella.

murbella is subverting the bene gesserit ❌ mother superior is injecting some much needed lightness and originality into the proceedings by threatening to turn people into a fine red mist for minor offences ✔️

After Kralizec AU
1 what happens to Paul & Chani, Leto & Jessica? HEA or not? 2 what about Wellington Yueh? Another relationship with a Bene Gesserit? 3 what becomes of Murbella and her girls--Janess and her younger sister? 4 what happens to Sheanna? 5 do Serena Butler and Xavier Harkonnen get an HEA? 6 what happens to the spice trade since you now have five sources of spice--Rakis, Chapterhouse, Queso, Buzzell and the planet of the machines?

dune part 2 maybe solidified duncan/murbella from book dune 6 in a way i didn't consider before
which is. how much the agony changes a person.
it happens to jessica, it happens to paul. leto is not here to bear witness to jessica's changes, her desperation to make paul survive at all costs, but i think he would have been horrified by her behaviour.
bc chani is.
(paul himself does not like jessica forcing him to be the messiah either, spending so much time dismayed at his mom's choices.)
paul changes after the agony. he's been trying so hard to resist his fate, to not go south, until it becomes painfully clear that there is no escape. he must go south, he must drink the water of life. he resigns himself to his fate, and becomes the messiah that he never wanted to be.
(and the way timothy chalamet portrays this!!!! the darkening of paul's character, his youthfulness and innocence stripped away, as he learns the truth!!!!! incredible!!!)
jessica, paul, they take a turn for the worse.
so yeah, chani storms away at the end. bc she brought paul back to life, and i don't think jessica placating her would have worked, bc chani has been angry at jessica's manipulations from the start, and how she listened to save him anyway, and i wonder if at that time, when paul becomes the emperor, if she thought it would have been better if she left paul, the sweet and fumbling boy, the one that she loves, for dead back then, and she regrets her decision.
bc they are dead! the old jessica, the old paul, died that day when they drank the water of life!!!
and i think that can maybe be seen in the trajectory of the preacher in children of dune. how he tries to tear down paul the messiah. there's a bit of chani there now, and he wishes, wishes, wishes that people would just listen. for as long as he breathes, he loves her, he carries her with him, he tries to be more like her.
but back to dune 6, and duncan/murbella. duncan did not bear witness to either of this. he did not see how paul or jessica changed during that time and how they reacted and adjusted as the process affected them in ways beyond repair. when he returns as hayt, the change has existed within the atreides for at least 10 years, and how paul has utterly utterly given himself up to it.
i had thought it was a good thing that murbella become a reverend mother, with some caveats. but mainly, bc the murbella/duncan genetic sex compulsion between them would finally be broken. but then, even before that, duncan who likes murbella when they're not forced to copulate, who did form a relationship with her in between those moments, he knows he's losing murbella to the bene gesserit. how she talks, how she thinks, how she looks at things... they're being stripped away, every atom changed into something colder and more long-term, and the agony enhances all of that tenfold.
and i'm just like. fuck, frank herbert, i wish duncan/murbella moments book 7 had happened to see the fallout, bc i so badly wanted to see what happened next!!!
but it was just SO visceral in watching chani lose paul, both slowly and suddenly, and how she's responsible for that, so i like that there wasn't a timeskip like in the book, but a more gradual handfuls of sand tragedy to them, and knowing what's to become of them.
so i think i get duncan's dread better now.

Hate how Duncan lusted after Jessica and then his clone got with Alia, probably because he couldn't have the mother, even in God-Emperor of Dune hooking up with a Jessica look-alike. No wonder even Gurney has more of a chance with Jessica than Duncan does, something must've instinctively told Jessica that there was something off about Duncan.
reason 38372829474783 why duncan idaho is the worst character in all of literary history ever. stay away from her!! DIE
