Charge of Flowerdew’s Squadron

A copy of Alfred Munnings’ Charge of Flowerdew’s Squadron used to hang in my office, when I was head of the Canadian Equestrian Team.

I was delighted to finally see the original at the Canadian War Museum’s exhibit of his work.

I was struck by its three-dimensionality.  Thick brush strokes rise above the canvas and give the painting both depth and life.

It depicts the Battle of Moreuil Wood, where the Canadian Cavalry Brigade pushed back the German advance, helping to break the German Spring Offensive and thus end the First World War.
