I just finished my very first repainted LPS!

(she's also my first custom doll of any kind!)

I wanted to use an LPS I didn't really like for my first project, just in case I did a terrible job 😆

I never liked this bunny's smug expression:

First I stuck its head in a mug of hot water to soften the plastic and popped off its head:

Then I removed the factory paint with acetone:

Unfortunately I broke the neck peg trying to get it out of the head, but it was an easy fix with some cyanoacrylate super glue:

Then I repainted the body and head to be white. I used cheap Craftsmart multisurface acrylic paint, and drybrushed it on in many many layers... this part took SO long! I had to trust the process:

Finally, completely white! I added blush with chalk pastels:

And drew on a rough draft of the eyes with Inktense pencils. The paint created a nice drawable surface, no MSC required. But it was impossible to erase the pencil marks!

I moved to more acrylic paints and painted on the face and toe beans:

After letting the paint cure for 3 days, I added 3 layers of Liquitex Matte liquid varnish and 2 layers of Liquitex High Gloss varnish on the eyes. The varnish really helped lock in the paint, since I had to reheat the head and pop the neck peg back in after this step and none of the paint cracked at all!!

I have a bigger project I'm planning involving Monster High dolls, but I am going to keep practicing on LPS until I hone my repainting skills :D

Courtesy of my cleaning binge today, some advice:

70/30 isopropyl alcohol is extremely good at cutting through grease. Buy a gallon of it and put it in a spray bottle and you have a cheap, effective, and safe grease-stripper. I use it routinely to clean my stove hood. Unlike most "multisurface" cleaning sprays (both detergent cleaners and things that are some variant of vinegar and/or essential oils), it won't leave a subtly sticky residue that traps dust.

If it's in your kitchen, it needs to be cleaned. Cooking creates airborne grease no matter how careful you are, and it will settle on everything. That's why things will have a weirdly matte, sticky surface after being in a kitchen for awhile. Spritz it with the isopropyl and wipe it down with a paper towel.

You can buy 30% acetic acid that will dissolve the most stubborn mineral deposits and soap scum. Use gloves and goggles with it or dilute it. Standard white vinegar is 4% acetic acid, for context. If you dilute your 30% down enough you can be less cautious, but it'll be less effective. 30% can etch things though, so use carefully.

If you can remotely afford it and have hard flooring, buy a hard floor cleaner. They're automated mop-vacuums that deposit clean water, scrub, and suck up the dirty water instead of just swishing dirty water around. They use a tiny fraction of the amount of water that traditional mopping does and you don't need to vacuum before using one (although you should get up any big stuff like leaves or onion skin). If you spill a liquid, they'll suck it right up and leave a clean floor behind in moments. I can't emphasize enough what magic this is.

White vinegar can be your best friend in a pinch. Even if you hate it in cooking, it's a great cleaning agent!

Here are some ways:

It works as a multisurface cleaner, counter, stove tops, etc.

I my personal favorite use is windows and mirrors!

It can be used as a fabric softener

You can use it to remove deodorant marks on black shirts.

Works best washed on cold and air dried (the heat of the dryer can reset the deodorant)

If you can think of some other uses, I will add them to the list!
