a/n: literally wrote this in 10 minutes and didn’t read it over so i’m sorry if it makes literally 0 sense lmaoooo. i hope y’all like it!! (also this picture of wil is so cute hes so-)
there’s a stale feeling in the air as you’re surrounded by your friends. a large table, a potluck dinner, laughter and 5 different conversations, all while brown eyes with your same sadness across and to the left of you attempts to impossibly avoid your gaze.
wilbur joins in one of the conversations, you can hear his laughter and smooth voice. it’s all that seems to reach your ears as you play with the food on your plate. you missed the sound of his carefree and light voice, his laugh sweeter than nectar. a pang of sadness hits your chest like a tidal wave. a feeling you’ve invited to the dinner table often these past few weeks, but having him here in front of you, hearing his voice and laugh in the room and not in your head, has made the sadness hurt even more. it hits your chest, knocks the wind out of you, makes you feel like you’ve been thrown backwards.
“y/n? did you hear me?” a voice comes from your right, causing you to flinch and drop the fork in your hand. the sound is loud, it makes you physically cringe as you hear the conversations die down and feel multiple eyes on you. you lean down to grab the fork,
“no, sorry. what were you saying?” you respond quietly, looking over at your friend and placing the fork down beside your plate.
“i asked if you were okay. you seem like you’re in space” they say, voice quiet and full of compassion. you nod, forcing a smile on your face. how weird is it to be seen, studied, known. your friends see through you. you wonder if wilbur does too.
“yeah” you whisper, “i’m okay. sorry. didn’t get much sleep last night” you let out a light laugh. they smile back at you, a half-crooked, sad smile. a hand reaches up to squeeze your shoulder - as if to say ‘i know you’re lying, but we don’t have to talk about it’, before they turn back around to continue their conversation. you finally look around as conversations have sparked back to life, scanning the table before reaching wilbur’s spot. he’s looking at you. his mouth slightly agape, his eyes sad. you hold his gaze for a beat, before grabbing your fork and standing.
“m’gonna go wash this” you mumble for no one in particular to hear, as you scurry to the kitchen. you sigh as you reach the room, running your hands through your hair and leaning down onto the counter. the wound of yours and wilbur’s breakup is still so fresh, still so new, still prone to infection. seeing him is harder than expected, but this get together had been planned for too long for either of you to cancel.
with another sigh, you grab your fork and turn on the tap, beginning to wash it. your mind wanders as you grab the dish soap and sponge - you planned a future with wilbur. you thought he was the one. your parents loved him. god, you loved him. you wanted all the stupid, gross, lovey-dovey shit with him. a big wedding, a small family, a white house with a fenced in backyard, cats and dogs, growing old together. you would’ve done it all with wilbur.
“i think it’s clean” a familiar voice cuts through your thoughts. you flinch, dropping the fork into the sink. your head whips over to the voice, seeing wilbur standing there, looking at you. you hadn’t noticed the tears streaming down your cheeks until he brought you back to reality, causing you to quickly wipe them with your sleeve. you sniff, “well, yaknow, just had to be sure” you chuckle, though it comes out sad and strained.
there’s a silence, the air feels heavy, as you both just look at one another.
“y/n…” wilbur starts. you shake your head. “don’t. it’s okay” you reassure, breaking your gaze from him to look down at the fork in the sink. you grab it, walking over to the dish towels hung over the oven handle.
“i’m sorry” wilbur whispers.
“i said dont, wilbur” you sigh, looking back up to him. he looks just as broken and disheveled as you do.
he nods his head. a silence washes over the room.
“i miss you” his voice cracks, his eyes gather tears but he quickly wipes them away.
“wil-“
“i know we agreed it was best to part ways but it’s killing me, y/n” wilbur cuts you off, his voice is quiet but filled with emotion. you stay quiet, your heartbeat loud in your ears as you take shaky breaths.
“i-its so hard. so fucking hard to pretend im okay with this. that im fine. t-that i really believe it’s for the best” wilbur chokes out, he gulps before continuing, “because i don’t. i don’t think it is.”
you close your eyes to avoid the tears forming. you shake your head.
“wil, please stop” you beg “we both have other things to focus on. i mean, you have the band and-“
“oh, fuck the band!” wilbur shouts. your eyes shoot open to look at him as he brings his fingers up to pinch his nose bridge. he looks at you “fuck the band. fuck streaming. fuck everything, y/n. if it means i lose you, i don’t want any of it.” wilbur’s voice calms, it’s quieter.
you sigh and shake your head, “i would never ask that of you. you know that” you whisper “you love that band. and you love touring. and you love making music. and i love watching you do it, wil, i love seeing you happy but i-“ your voice breaks as a tear falls down your cheek, “but i cant sit there and wait for you to make time for me anymore. you were busy and you were happy and i waited and it’s fine but i- i couldn’t wait anymore. a-and all your promises, all the missed dates, all the times i spent sleeping alone, i just- it was too hard.”
wilbur takes a step towards you, searching your face for a reaction. when you don’t react, he walks over to you, standing in front of you. hesitantly, he reaches his hands to cup your face, wiping your tears with his thumb as his own tears fall from his eyes. he leans down and rests his forward against yours. a shaky sigh escapes your lips as you breathe in his scent.
“then i’ll wait for you this time” he whispers, “whenever you’re ready for me, i’ll be here. ready to change, to do whatever it takes, to show you the love you deserve.”
a wet laugh escapes your lips as you sniff, reaching up to hold his forearms as you close your eyes.
“i love you, y/n” he whispers, “i don’t think i’m capable of not loving you.”
you nod. “me neither” you agree.
his forehead leaves yours, being replaced by his lips. a lingering kiss on your forehead. he steps back, grabbing hold of your hands as you both look into each others teary eyes.
“whenever you’re ready” wilbur whispers. you nod - “okay” you whisper back. he smiles, as do you, before he walks out of the room.
you look down at the fork on the counter. a forgotten task. you smile, leaning over to pick it up. inspecting it in your hands. a breath, a sniff, a final wipe of your eyes.
whenever i’m ready, you think.

1d8 "Free" Fantasy RPGs To Replace 5e At Your Table
D&D 5e sure is a roleplaying game, and it's one that I have enjoyed a lot. However, that doesn't mean that I'd recommend it automatically for other people. This has many reasons, which I won't elaborate here. It has also shaped the perception of TTRPGs significantly thanks to its market dominance, and not in a good way.
5e has a reputation for being an expensive, complex game, and 5e players fear that other RPGs might just be the same. That it's too much of a hassle and too much of a financial burden to switch systems.
So, to help 5e players pick out a different system, I've made this handy 1d8 rolling table to help them pick a fantasy TTRPG with a combat component that they can try instead!

Let's now go through these eight nine RPGs and see what's up with them, right below the "Keep reading" section!
I'll be listing some metrics like the page count for the rulebook(s), the core resolution mechanic, how complex the game is in terms of character creation & combat, and how well-supported the game is by their publisher and the community-at-large.
1. Cairn
Author: Yochai Gal
Release Year: 2020
Cost: Free PDF, printed copies cost between $3 to $10 depending on the print quality.
Page Count: 24

Resolution Mechanic: 1d20 Roll Under system for ability checks/saving throws, attacks hit automatically, "fiction-first".
Action Economy: Movement + one action per round.
Characters: Random character creation, class-less and level-less, advancement based on "Scars" (suffering damage that reduces your HP exactly to 0)
Setting: Implied. Low-magic European-style fantasy; mysterious woodlands.
Other Noteworthy Mechanics: Hit Protection and Ability damage instead of HP, Slot-Based Inventory.
Degree of Support: Very high. Available in fifteen languages (e.g. Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and German); full rules text is under CC-BY-SA 4.0; multiple published third-party adventures & supplements available; some official bonus material (e.g. bestiary, magic items/relics, and spells) is available for free on the website.
Addendum: An expanded 2nd Edition is currently on Kickstarter (ends April 26th 2024); Cairn is legitimately easy to learn, however the Hit Protection system and the connected Scars system is a very different abstraction to health and advancement compared to 5e.
2. Cloud Empress

Release Year: 2023
Cost: Free PDF of the rulebook and the creator-written sample adventure "Last Voyage of the Bean Barge", $20 for the print edition of the rulebook, $12 for PDF supplements, $25 for print + PDF supplements; free solo rules also available as PDF only.

Resolution Mechanic: d100 Roll Under system for stat checks/saving throws, critical successes or failures on doubles (11, 22, 33, etc.), 5e-style advantage/disadvantage, attacks generally hit automatically.
Action Economy: Two actions per round with no free movement.
Characters: Semi-random character creation, four classes ("jobs"), no rules for character advancement in the ruleset.
Setting: Specific. "Ecological science fantasy" heavily inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind"; costly magic, giant insects, dangerous mushrooms; only human player characters.
Other Noteworthy Mechanics: Damage points culminate in Wounds; Wounds and Stress as ways to track your character's physical and mental state; slot-based inventory system.
Degree of Support: Low-ish. Several official supplements exist, however third-party material is very sparse. May improve due to the recent establishment of a Cloud Empress Creators Fund, has a simple 3rd party license system.
Addendum: A supplement, "Cloud Empress: Life & Death" is currently on Kickstarter (ends April 26th 2024, yes, the same day as Cairn 2e) and as a disclaimer I even backed that current Kickstarter; Cloud Empress is built on the engine of the sci-fi horror RPG "Mothership"; clearly built for one-shots and short campaigns; has a wonderful resting system that encourages roleplay between players.
3. Iron Halberd

Release Year: 2023
Cost: Free PDF of the rules; no print option available.
Page Count: 60

Resolution Mechanic: 1d20 + Bonus Roll Over system against difficulty or armor rating, however most non-combat-related actions follow a fiction first approach without dice rolls.
Action Economy: Movement + one action per round.
Characters: Semi-random character creation, class-less but there are four different "gear kits" that nudge your character towards certain archetypes, levelling up with XP.
Setting: Essentially non-existant. General European fantasy with magic, gods may or may not exist/shape the world, various fantastic ancestries included.
Other Noteworthy Mechanics: Includes rules for building strongholds and maintaining warbands; slot-based inventory with a durability mechanic.
Degree of Support: None. The game is intended to be relatively compatible with other OSR content and the creator suggests using adventures made for the D&D retroclone Old-School Essentials if you wanna use pre-published ones. An official introductory adventure, "Sea-Spray Bay", is apparently in the works. No 3rd party license available, as far as I know.
Addendum: One thing about Iron Halberd I like especially is how it uses random tables for generating equipment. Most of the equipment is listed in a numerical order by category, and the various gear kits include references on different rolling formulas for those equipment categories. For example someone taking the "soldier's kit" rolls twice on the d20 Weapons table and takes their preferred pick, while someone taking the "sage's kit" only rolls a d4 on that table.
4. Mausritter
Author: Isaac Williams
Release Year: 2020
Cost: Free PDF of the ruleset available; box set with the rules and several goodies including an adventure costs $55; additional box set + PDFs containing eleven official adventures costs $55 (or $20 digital-only).
Page Count: 48

Resolution Mechanic: 1d20 Roll Under system, 5e-style advantage/disadvantage, attacks always hit.
Action Economy: Movement + one action per round.
Characters: Random character creation, class-less, levelling up with XP.
Setting: Vaguely specific. You play as mice and everything is related to mouse-size; cats are the equivalents of devils or dragons; humans exist as a setting background but may or may not be present in a campaign.
Other Noteworthy Mechanics: Includes rules for recruiting warbands; slot-based inventory with a durability mechanic.
Degree of Support: Very high. Several official supplements exist, as well as loads of content, be it adventures or supplements, made by other creators. Available in seven languages (all of them however are European). Has a simple 3rd party license system.
Addendum: Mausritter uses the phrase "adventure site" instead of dungeons. On the website a free adventure site generator is available, as is a digital tool that can be used to generate your own item cards for the slot-based inventory system.
5. Maze Rats
Author: Ben Milton
Release Year: 2017
Cost: $4.99 for the PDF, no print option regularly available.
Page Count: 32

Resolution Mechanic: 2d6 + Bonus Roll Over system; advantage system that uses 3d6 drop the lowest + Bonus.
Action Economy: Movement + one action per round.
Characters: Semi-random character creation, class-less but instead there are character features (e.g. spell slots or attack bonuses), levelling up with XP.
Setting: Essentially non-existant. Magic is very irregular (s. the section below), but otherwise it implies a vaguely European fantasy setting.
Other Noteworthy Mechanics: Spells are randomly generated each adventuring day and spell effects are negotiated between the GM and the spellcasting player; includes several fantastic d66 tables that can be used to randomly generate worlds.
Degree of Support: Decent. The rule text is licensed under CC BY 4.0 and unofficial translations are available. Some third-party content has been made specifically for the game.
Addendum: The only purchase-only game on this list. However "unofficial" distribution of the PDF is very common. Also this is the oldest game on the list. Ben "Questing Beast" Milton is a prolific OSR blogger and runs a YouTube channel on the OSR. Great dude.
6. Sherwood - A Game of Outlaws & Arcana
Author: Richard Ruane
Release Year: 2022
Cost: Free quickstart PDF titled "Sherwood - A Quickstart of Outlaws" available; digital rulebook costs $7.50 and the print edition (including PDF) costs $15.
Page Count: 25 (Quickstart), 32 (Rulebook)

Resolution Mechanic: 2d6 + Bonus Roll Over system for skill checks (including attacks), 2d6 Roll Under system for saving throws; advantage & disadvantage system that involves rolling 3d6 and using the higher/lower of the two results; almost all rolls are player-facing
Action Economy: "Conversational", assumption of movement + action.
Characters: Largely choice-based character creation. Combine two (of six) background abilities with the benefits of seven different careers. Big focus on interpersonal relationships during character creation. Limited character advancement takes place during downtime.
Setting: Specific. Takes place in a fantastical version of 13th century England, with fey and magic coexisting with outlaws and crusaders.
Other Noteworthy Mechanics: The group of outlaws possesses two shared resources (Resources and Legend) that can be spent to gain certain benefits; spellcasting is divided into two categories: arcane talents and sorcerous rites, with the former being immediate and the later taking significant time; slot-based inventory.
Degree of Support: None. No further publications exist for the game and while it is published under the CC-BY 4.0 license, no third-party content exists as far as I know. It does include a guide on how to convert D&D and Troika (N)PCs into Sherwood characters, as well as three adventure seeds (one in the Quickstart, two in the rules), which is at least something.
Addendum: Might just be the game on this list that encourages the most roleplaying; the character sheet is sadly very provisional-feeling and the Quickstart feels outdated compared to the finalized rulebook.
7. The Electrum Archive
Author: Emiel Boven
Release Year: 2022
Cost: Free Rules PDF available, zines cost $12 as digital PDFs or $24 as print + PDF combos; the first zine contains the entire contents of the Free Rules PDF
Page Count: 26 (Free Rules), 72 (Issue 01)

Resolution Mechanic: 1d10 Roll Under system, attacks always hit.
Action Economy: Movement + one action per round.
Characters: Largely choice-based; three archetypes roughly corresponding to fighters/rangers (Vagabonds), rogues (Fixers), and spellcasters (Warlocks); player characters are presumed to be human; levelling up with XP.
Setting: Specific. Mechanics heavily tie into the lore; humanity has abundant access to minerals but requires a rare substance known as Ink to operate certain pieces of tech (like guns) and cast spells but cannot produce Ink themselves; spirits of various sorts can be foes, targets of worship, or sources of power.
Other Noteworthy Mechanics: Uses a spellcasting system for the Warlock archetype that's heavily based on the one used in Maze Rats, as in it uses randomly-generated spells whose effects are negotiated between the player and the GM; slot-based inventory with a durability mechanic.
Degree of Support: Minimal. The game consists out of the free rules and (soon) two zines; a third party license exists but content produced under it is very rare.
Addendum: I need to disclaim that I recently backed the Kickstarter campaign for the second zine for this game; the free rules feature wrong page numbers in its table of contents which is unfortunate; The Electrum Archive uses incredibly simple stats for NPCs which makes creating new ones based on other games rather simple.
8. Shadowdark RPG
Author: Kelsey Dionne
Release Year: 2023
Cost: Free player and game master quickstarts exist as PDFs and are available in print for $19, the core rules cost $28 in PDF form and $57 in a print + PDF bundle
Page Count: 68 (Player Quickstart Guide), 68 (Game Master Quickstart Guide), 332 (Core Rules)

Resolution Mechanic: 1d20 + Bonus Roll Over system, 5e-style advantage/disadvantage, natural 1s are critical failures and natural 20s are critical successes.
Action Economy: Movement + one action per round.
Characters: Largely choice-based; players have a fantasy ancestry and a class; levelling up with XP; class progression largely random.
Setting: Vague. General (dark) western fantasy conventions apply; alignment is a force in this universe and a sample pantheon is provided; the most potent enemies in the rules are named individuals that fit classic TTRPG monster types; illustrations and lore snippets have recurring motifs.
Other Noteworthy Mechanics: The key mechanic of Shadowdark is how the game handles light, namely that light sources are tracked in real time (i.e. a normal torch lasts 1 hour), which increases tension; slot-based inventory; has a 0th-level character creation option using an eliminationist "Gauntlet".
Degree of Support: Fantastic. Several official supplements and offically sanctioned digital tools exist; lots of third-party content available under a generous third-party license.
Addendum: Definitely the most similar game to 5e on this list besides the next entry; very robust mechanically and the Core Rules features extensive lists of magic items, monsters, and spells; also for early play giving your players only access to the quickstart is a totally valid choice; and finally, before Dionne made Shadowdark, she made 5e adventures for years and it shows (affectionate).
9. Pathfinder
Authors: Logan Bonner, Jason Bulmahn, Stephen Radney-MacFarland, Mark Seifter
Release Year: 2019 (initial release), 2023 (remaster)
Cost: Free and comprehensive SRD available via the platform Archives of Nethys, free "Pathfinder Primer" abridged rulebook available via the Pathfinder Nexus (powered by Demiplane), Core books are priced $20 for PDFs and $30/$60 for print as a softcover/hardcover; a Beginner Box set with shortened soft-cover rules costs $45
Page Count: 464 (Player Core), 336 (GM Core), 376 (Monster Core), 160 (Combined Beginner Box Softcovers)

Resolution Mechanic: 1d20 + Bonus Roll Over system, 5e-style advantage/disadvantage, four degrees of success based on result compared to target number.
Action Economy: Three action points per round; various actions may require more than one point; every character can use one reaction per round of combat.
Characters: Choice-based; players first pick an ancestry and a background and a class (the ABCs) and then tend to have meaningful choices after each level-up; levelling up with XP.
Setting: Important. Golarion, the game's setting, is a world that has been long in development and it shows; powerful magic and influential gods; very clear notions of what the societies of the various peoples of the world are like and how they should behave.
Other Noteworthy Mechanics: Balance between character classes and reliable combat challenge calculations are an important design goal; weight-based inventory system; archetype system for "multiclassing".
Degree of Support: Fantastic. Loads of content gets regularly produced by the game's publisher Paizo; the Pathfinder Infinite program (similar to D&D's Dungeon Master's Guild) provides lots of lore-compliant third-party content; uses the ORC third-party license for content produced outside of the Pathfinder Infinite program. Translations into other languages available but Paizo does not provide a comprehensive list of available languages (only German and French confirmed after brief personal research).
Addendum: The most popular and commercially successful of the listed games; but also by far the most complicated, though it is easier to GM for specificallty than 5e; also I dislike how certain feats create situations where fairly mundane actions get mechanics through these feats instead of being things you can generally do; anyway the reason why it's a 9 on a 1d8 table is because if you wanted to try out Pathfinder 2e you already would have and because while Paizo is better than WotC it's still a flawed big company.

So this was an exhausting little project. I hope you found this helpful and I hope you give at least one of these games a shot! A follow-up to this post is not out of the cards, but I don't plan on one.

pre script : GUYS. I AM SO SORRY. I did NOT intend to stretch it out for this long but let's just say that the unfortunate things that happened to me (like steam burning my wrist 👍🏻) was NOT on my bucket list either. Anyways. It's all done now!! Every post is scheduled roughly 15-20 minutes from each other! Enjoy mi amigo!!

Some points to note before you move to the event visualizer : 
🟣 My anchoring style is highly energetic and bubbly so you can imagine me doing a lot of hand gestures, changing pitch and tones of my voice, moving around on the stage a lot, etc. Hehe.  
🟣 The theatre/event venue has been engineered by the best engineers of the world, with the most modern technology. The petals of the lotus can close or open to hide or reveal the night sky. It can also change its colours. For tonight, it's indigo!  
🟣 The "OUTFIT CHECK" were clicked in different places (according to where the member was spotted first) hence the different background. 
🟣 I didn't want to write too dialogues on yall's behalf but I can't really bother you with every small detail, so I hope whatever dialogues I've made up are not too out of character! 
🟣Ignore the contradiction of same blue locker entering the scene multiple times, pretend there are a few copies of each member 🥰👍🏻
🟣 Ignore the outfit mismatch in the edits (any edit after the outfit checks please, our editing skills only go so far 🙏🏻 ) 
🟣 I highly suggest that you listen to songs as you keep finding them being embedded in links for added feels and extra hype! 🔥
🟣 The performances where multiple songs have been used is supposed to be a mashup. You can imagine the mashup to be as you please! The songs I've bunched together are for the sole purpose of creating a particular vibe, so as long as to they are fulfilled it's all good! 😌🤝🏻

i ought to get better at writing down my thoughts so i actually remember them. anyway, it's kashiwagi time again. strap yourselves in cause this is going to be very long & punctuated with discord screenshots
i've discovered recently that people seem to like it when i lay my thoughts out on him, which is honestly wild to me but here we are. like i say, i'd like to put my ideas somewhere i can actually access them somewhat easily instead of peppered randomly through two or three discord threads and my own tumblr tags, so this post will probably function as my own personal meta archive for him, because i'm allergic to tables and spreadsheets and i don't really want to rely on google drive any more than i am already.
(speaking of google drive, i have a repository here of most of kashiwagi's audio files. refer to the readme document for the reasons it's not all of them for now)
>the basics?
i'll start with his age because that's at the forefront of my mind at the moment. i like to think he's in the ballpark of 10 years older than kiryu and nishiki, which would put him around six years older than majima, two years older than adachi, and 13 years younger than kazama. thusly, with a calculated birth date of around 1958, discounting birth month, he is (approximately):
30 in yakuza 0 (1988)
37 at the start of yakuza 1 (1995)
47 through the rest of yakuza 1, after kiryu gets out on parole (2005)
48 in yakuza 2 (2006)
51 in yakuza 3/when he "dies" (2009) (also goes grey around this time, maybe the year before)
61 in yakuza: like a dragon & gaiden (2019)
66-ish in rgg8 (2024).
(this list has been incredibly helpful to me actually because my original thought was that he was eight years older than the boys... that would put him at the same age as adachi, which i'm not a huge fan of)

next up, sexuality - i think he's (almost) exclusively attracted to other men, with yayoi being an exception that proves the rule.
however, my idealised "ship" "timeline" for him is that he's with kazama until kazama gets naded, then does some FWB shit with majima until he himself "dies", then somewhere down the line after opening the bar ends up in a slow-burning "friend"ship with adachi, because who better to take out for dinner than the strapping old geezer in the glasses who serves you drinks and keeps a watchful eye on your extensive tab?

next, i think he's definitely nd. which is something you can say for most characters in this series in some way, but he has an interesting relationship with food (not just limited to what he eats, but how), is shown infodumping on several occasions, hardly if ever switches up what he wears (at most, colours), flat affect/resting bitch face/autism stare, hires extra staff at his hobby bar so that he doesn't have to speak to his customers as much, and behind his intimidating mask he has this awkward kind of energy that reminds me a lot of my own experiences with being a bit not-normal. he probably has an oral fixation.

also, sort of crack but also not, i enjoy the idea that he's light sensitive (or at least moreso than kiryu is):

he is very highly strung - we see this on multiple occasions. he seems visibly less so after "dying" in 2009, so i'm chalking it up to the stress of having to run things as someone who has the right mentality for leadership (the other patriarchs call him "soft" in y3 for trying to resolve conflicts rather than fostering them) but just doesn't enjoy doing it. he does exceptionally well as kazama's number two, but in yakuza 0 while kazama is in jail, and in yakuza 2 after kazama dies and he inherits the family (and clan captainship), he seems very stressed out. i absolutely think that his reputation for lashing out and his "violent" disciplinary methods are due in part to stress shortening his fuse (with the latter also being learned behaviours from kazama - an old school yakuza & assassin). age and the experience of staring death and a CIA attack helicopter in the face also definitely play a part in mellowing him out.
on kazama, i'm shamelessly stealing inoue's reasons for joining the shinsengumi and applying that to kashiwagi, because, while i don't really think of them as the same guy, there is absolutely a reason they chose him specifically as inoue's bakumatsu face claim. i don't have many ideas as to what kashiwagi did before swearing up, but he's a man of debts and undying loyalty, so i believe kazama must have saved him or turned his life around in such a way that he felt he could do nothing but pledge himself to him. i also really enjoy the idea of kazama having given him his scar, but i'm not 100% on how that might have come around either.
to extrapolate even more bullshit headcanon from insignificant canon details, i think in the 80s he was a beginner hobbyist keyboard player. mostly looking at the judgement cinematic where he's not plugged in and playing a little out of sync BUT still doing whatever fucked up fruity little dance he's doing. the presence of the piano at survive makes me think he got a hell of a lot more into it in his newfound free time, as something else to keep his hands mobile as he ages and recovers from getting shot up by a heli. also, still love the little anecdote we get from iroha when she says he's good with his hands.

It took me a while, but today we're paying a visit to the the Bourgeoisies!

This house (or rather two houses on the same lot) are inhabited by 8 Sims: 3 elders, 2 adults, a teen and 2 kids.
Before the civil war the family were wealthy merchants and tailors, high-ranking members of Dunceville's burgeoisie. During the war the family lost the majority of its wealth and some of its status. Now it's working hard (well, some of its members are) to regain their lost status.
Jan runs a tailor shop, where he sells goods made by the family members.

Her aspiration is family.
Anna (woman with a book) is daughter of Rabies and Old Fart, Jan's wife and mother of Antoinette, Loafer, Kaśka and Maciek. Her personality is 6/3/6/4/6, bookworm, brooding, family-oriented, socially awkward, supernatural fan. She works in the slacker career. Her aspiration is family.
Anna had a fling with Caligula Claudius (who didn't?), but this time it didn't result in pregnancy (that's a surprise for once). However, when Antoinette and Loafer have been already teenagers she got pregnant again. The pregancy was a surprise for the couple as they thought Anna was too old to have children. They were even more surprised when she gave birth to twins: Kaśka and Maciek (seriously though, I need to re-adjust Trips&Quads chances. I've got too many multiple births in my game). Jan and Anna weren't prepared for two new children, especially being already middle-aged people. Between preparing for Antoinette's marriage and trying to force Loafer to stop slacking, get to work and find some nice girl instead of that beggar girl, they haven't got much time to pay attention to their youngest kids.
Jan (moustached man) is Granny and Gramps' son, Anna's husband and father of Antoinette, Loafer, Kaśka and Maciek. His personality is 4/4/4/7/6, brooding, hydrophobic, light sleeper, lover the heat, loves the outdoors. He's got 5 points of body skill and 5 points of charisma. He also has a silver cashier badge, a gold sales badge and a bronze restocking badge. He works in the business career and also owns a tailor's shop. His aspiration is family/fortune.
Antoinette Garncarska (Potter) née Bourgeoisie, Jan and Anna's eldest child, is not included in the picture, because she's an adult married to Julian Garncarski (Potter) and lives with the Potter family.
Loafer (teenager sitting on the table) is the elder son of Anna and Jan. His girlfirend is SIster Beggar and, to but it mildly, his parents aren't supportive of the relationship. He's got awful grades at school. His personality is 1/3/10/7/4, eco-friendly, hydrophobic, supernatural sceptic. He's got a silver sewing badge. His aspiration is popularity.
Kaśka is the elder twin. She's friends with Wanda Watch and Octavian Magic. Her personality is 6/8/8/7/6, hot-headed, loves the heat.
Maciek is technically the youngest child and Kaśka twin. His personality is 4/9/6/7/8, genius, hydrophobic.

If I told you just how I felt
When Jihoon first met you, he thought you were annoying. You were paired together in a chemistry class your sophomore year of high school. Working on this lab with you was torture, you’d always skip a step of the instructions or left a solution over a buntsen burner for too long. More often than not, Jihoon found himself fixing your mistakes. 
He complained to his friends about how much of a clutz you were and how he hated the teacher for pairing together. It was only a day later that you changed his mind. You were nearly late for class, rushing into your seat next to his at the last second. You slid a stack of papers stapled together across the table in his direction and his eyes nearly bulged out of his head when he realized that it was your lab report. 
“We were supposed to work on this together over the weekend. How’d you manage to write 10 pages on your own in one night?” He quickly scans multiple pages, all of your work was spot on. 
You pick at your nails, avoiding eye contact, “I thought I’d make up for messing up the experiment so many times. Didn’t want you to feel like you were doing all the work.”
After that, the chem teacher kept pairing the two of you together for labs, saying something about the two of you working well together. Jihoon helped you get better at staying on task and getting an experiment done while you helped him write a better conclusion to a lab. 
With time, Jihoon realized that he actually liked being around you. You never overstepped any boundaries and were hardworking. You were kind but not a push-over. And most importantly, you were the most non judgemental person he had ever met in his life.
Whenever he would tell you about the latest anime episode he had watched, you asked him questions about the lore of the show. If he complained about the band teacher wanting to give his clarinet solo to someone else, you would get annoyed too. You really were the most loyal of his friends. 
During junior year, the two of you settled in the same friend group after being put in nearly all the same classes. It wasn’t a big group of friends, there were five of you: Soonyoung (a trumpet player Jihoon met in band), Sana (your friend from middle school), Changkyun (a boy that coincidentally sat near the four of you in your calculus class), Jihoon and you.
The five of you remained a friend group during the rest of your time in high school. You all went to homecoming together, squished into Changkyun’s car. Sana, Changkyun, and you would go to every football game your team had. Not to support the football team, but to watch Jihoon and Soonyoung march during halftime. You would all go see Sana’s dance recitals. Your basement became the go-to location for any get together, any movie night or half-assed birthday parties. Once, when your parents left the state for a wedding, the five of you got drunk together for the first time, drinking a jungle juice made by Changkyuns older brother.
The point was, you were spending a lot of time with each other. And it was one of those nights, in the middle of your hangouts, that he realized he liked you a little bit more than just platonically. Or, well, your friends realized it for him.
You stood up from your seat on the couch and said that you’d be back, your parents needed help with bringing in groceries from the car. They offered to pause the movie and you said you had already seen the movie before so it didn’t matter. They paused it anyway. You disappeared after going up the stairwell.
“What are we gonna do for her birthday?” Sana asked. Your birthday was three weeks from then. Hm, what should Jihoon get you? Last year he hadn’t known you well enough to get you a present but he definitely should this year. And it had to be a good gift, something you would actually use, something that every time you looked at it, you’d think of him.
Soonyoung nudged him, “What are you getting her?” 
“I don’t really know yet.”
“Really?” Changkyun asked. “I thought you’d already have everything planned.”
Jihoon’s confused, “Why would I already have everything planned?” 
He’s taking a sip of his coke when Changkyun answers, “Well, you have a crush on her.”
Instantly, Jihoon is launched into a coughing fit, having nearly choked on his drink. He clumsily places his drink down and doubles over coughing. Soonyoung and Changkyun are falling over too, but from laughing at him.
“Come on, dude.” Sana chuckles and pats him on the back to try to help him with his coughing. “You’re so obvious about it, you didn’t really think we wouldn’t notice, did you.”
Once the burning in his throat has died down, Jihoon takes another sip of his drink, wanting to avoid talking to his teasing friends.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He mumbles.
Soonyoung snorts, “You mean you don’t look for her from the stands during every game? Or give her heart eyes when you’re in the same room as her? Or turn red when she calls you Jihoonie?”
The three of them are laughing at him again and Jihoon glances at the stairs, making sure you’re not hearing any of this conversation. 
“I'm not even joking, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
There's a beat of silence as your friends stare at Jihoon, trying to gauge how honest he’s being. A look of disbelief comes over their faces. 
“You mean,” Sana softly says, “We figured out you like her before you did?” 
Jihoon can feel his ears burning, and he rubs them self consciously. He can’t even bring himself to look at them. He’s thinking about you and how your smile makes him feel lighter and how whenever he makes a joke he’ll make sure it made you laugh. It definitely would make sense if Jihoon had a crush on you.
Suddenly, you're flying down the stairs. You fall over onto the couch between Sana and Jihoon, giggling to yourself like a maniac. You sit up turning to Sana, grabbing onto her shoulders and giving her a shake, “You’ll never believe what just happened!”
“What is it, woman?” Sana exclaims, trying to stop you from shaking her. 
“Remember Seungcheol? My neighbor?”
Immediately, the three boys are groaning in protest. Of course they know about Seungcheol, you only talk about him every single time the opportunity presents itself.
Seungcheol is a year older than you, currently the varsity captain of the wrestling team. After he moved into the house next to yours at the beginning of the year, all you ever have to say about him is oh, his muscles are so big. Jihoon, look at his hair, it looks so soft. Oh my god, I think he was looking at me. Jihoon wasn’t sure why he disliked Seungcheol when he actually was a kind person, but now he’s able to realize that it’s due to jealousy. The other boys are just sick of hearing you gush over a guy that doesn’t give you the time of day. Sana is the only one of your friends willing to hear you out on this absurd crush.
“What about Seungcheol?” Sana asks you.
“He pulled up to his house while we were unloading groceries and he came over to help–”  “So he did one nice thing.” Soonyoung interrupts you. 
“Shut up, Soon! He’s always nice, but that isn’t the point.” 
Huh, the pout on your face is sort of cute, Jihoon thinks. 
“Anyways, when we finished, he asked to talk to me outside, and he asked me out!”
You’re squealing in excitement again, oblivious to the looks of terror and sympathy that Jihoons friends are sending him. He feels his heart sink.
Maybe it was better to stay unaware of his feelings, it’s not like he had a chance anyways. Still, he put on a fake smile like the rest of his friends.
“Oh my god!” Sana says. “That's so exciting!”
Soon enough, you’re all finishing up the movie, even if he can’t seem to focus on the screen. Seungcheol was a good guy, he should be happy for you. This was something that you had been wanting for a while and it was finally happening. Jihoon refused to be the person to ruin that for you. When the movie is over and Changkyun is driving everyone else back home, there's a tense silence.
Soonyoung clears his throat, nudging Jihoons foot with his own from the backseat, “They barely know anything about each other, maybe this is just a fling. It’ll pass.”
Changkyun looks at the two from the rearview mirror, “Yea, Seungcheol barely even looked at her before this. It’s kind of weird that he just asked her out.”
“Guys stop,” Sana says. She doesn’t turn to look at the boys in the car, instead looking outside through the passenger window. “I know we feel bad for Jihoon, but that’s not fair to her. She likes Seungcheol a lot, he could be her first boyfriend. It’s a big deal, so let's not ruin it for her.”
Jihoon sighs, “Right. Up until today, I didn’t even realize how much I like her… let's just pretend that conversation didn’t happen.”
The car pulls up in front of his house. He hurriedly unbuckles his seatbelt and leaves the car. He’s sniffling when he makes it to his room, flopping onto his bed. Part of him hopes you realize Seungcheol isn’t what you thought he’d be like and you’ll forget about him, but another part of him feels disgusting for thinking that. 
A week later, you’re telling them all about how amazing your bowling date with Seungcheol went. He paid for everything and didn’t make you feel bad for being terrible at bowling. He wasn’t trying to get into your pants and was making genuine questions. He surprised you with flowers at the end of your date and asked when he could take you on another date. You went on a lot more dates after that, there was a picnic date, a trip to the movie theater, a corn maze. 
On your birthday, Sana invited him to your party. Jihoon wasn’t sure what to get you, especially now that he had realized he liked you. He ended up making you a playlist and then burning it onto a CD. But at your party, Seungcheol surprised everyone by showing up with a guitar. He sang you a sweet love song in front of everyone, winning over all of your friends. Jihoon ended up hiding his CD, now embarrassed to give it to you. He couldn’t sing you a song the way Seungcheol did. He didn’t make you hide your face timidly or smile that big. When Sana asked him what he had gotten you, Jihoon said that his gift hadn’t arrived in time and would give it to you a little later.
Now, at the end of the school year, the CD he made for you is sitting on his desk, waiting for the opportunity to give it to you without it feeling like he was trying to steal you from Seungcheol.
The five of you attend the senior graduation. You had told your friends that you were feeling insecure about your relationship, how even though it had been a couple months of going out, Seungcheol hasn't asked you to be his girlfriend. And that he probably wouldn’t since he would be leaving for college. Still, you wanted to support him, so you showed up to the graduation with gifts to give him after the ceremony. To everyone’s amazement, he was the one to surprise you by asking you to be his girlfriend during his graduation party.
As Jihoon watched the romance between you and Seungcheol develop, he couldn’t help but feel many emotions. He loved the happiness that radiated from your smile and the twinkle in your eye whenever you were with him. But at the same time, he couldn’t help the jealousy from creeping in, wishing it was him instead of Seungcheol every time he’d catch the two of you hugging or kissing. He had only recently come to terms with his feelings but had no choice but to watch from the sidelines. He wasn't even upset with Seungcheol anymore, having finally gotten the chance to know him and realizing that he really was a good boyfriend.
Jihoon was determined to be a supportive friend, even if it meant keeping his feeling hidden. He still held onto the CD he created for your birthday, a reminder of his unrequited feelings. For now, he knew the timing wasn’t right to confess his feelings. But maybe one day, the stars would align, and the right moment would present itself.
After junior year ended, and you and Seungcheol officially became a couple, Jihoon’s heart carried a bittersweet melody. The CD, filled with songs that spoke about his feelings, remained on his desk, waiting for the day he could give it to you.

Weird pattern?
I'm sorry if this sounds dumb its just been bothering me and if you know anything about this please tell me because I have a lot of questions about this. (and I also apologize in advance if I used some terminologies incorrectly I'm not knowledgeable about this topic) :)
So I have been thinking about this sequence. I am really bad at explaining so I hope you understand the computation it basically goes like this Multiplication table of 2

If you add the digits of the numbers together to get a single digit integer it repeats a pattern of 2, 4, 6 , 8, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. I have only calculated up to the number 38 but I'm sure the pattern will stay the same. But it is not only the number 2 every single number from 1-9 has its own pattern 1 follows 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 3 follows 3, 6, 9 4 follows 4, 8, 3, 7, 2, 6, 1, 5, 9 5 follows 5, 1, 6, 2, 7, 3, 8, 4, 9 6 follows 6, 3, 9 7 follows 7, 5, 3, 1, 8, 6, 4, 2, 9 8 follows 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 9 follows 9 (I'm pretty sure this is somewhat connected to the divisibility rule) I also observed that if a number (doesn't matter how many digits) if added to make a single digit it follows the same pattern. Ex. The table of 643 643 x 1= [643] 6+4+3= 10+3= [13] 1+3= 4 Since 4 appears it will most likely follow the pattern of for but just to be sure here is the complete table of 643 643(2)= [1,286] 1+2+8+6= [17] 1+7=8 (3)=[1,929] 1+9+2+9= [21] 2+1=3 (4)=[2,572] 2+5+7+2= [16] 1+6=7 (5)=[3,215] 3+2+1+5= [11] 1+1= 2 (6)=[3,858] 3+8+5+8=[24] 2+4=6 (7)= [4.501] 4+5+1=[10] 1+0=1 (8)= [5,144] 5+1+4+4=[14] 1+4=5 (9)= [5,787] 5+7+8+7= [27] 2+7=9
It did follow 4's pattern. That's all I know it sounds stupid and really what is the purpose of this pattern but if anyone knows more about this please tell me. :)

Happy Sunday and thank you @coffeegleek for the tag (how the turns have tabled) and a thanks back to @wellbelesbian.
Do you see this bespoke banner? The title "Sonic Sunday" is by @ivelovedhimthroughworse and while I was looking that up, I realised staff flagged this entire blog as mature content. I literally complain all the time about how I do not know what sexy times are and yet...
Anyway, Tumblr fuckery aside, I claimed a fic for the Caught on Tape Podfic fest. It was a brash decision, because I have zero (0) experiences with the podfic world. I've uhhh never even listened to one so feel free to send recommendations. The things is that, to this day, I still read English text out loud. That's partially how I learnt English. And then I always give characters voices etc. so I thought: "Why not try this?" and also the mods said the fest was open for everyone. I was a bit worried, since I don't own a microphone or anything, but it's all in good fun. I did contribute, like, 5 lines to the Dalton Audiobook, but that's it. (And my chapters haven't been posted yet.) But the list of fics of this fest is absolutely phenomenal and I even had to stop myself from claiming multiple and I told myself to keep it around 1K fics, but damn. I already looked up how to pronounce Telemachus, but how the shit do you pronounce Swithin???
So I decided to try to podfic my own fics, just as some sort of equipment test. I only have a phone, after all. I originally wanted to try my hand at My rose-coloured boy, since that's my shortest CO fic, but again, this is a try out, so I picked my shortest fic on AO3, which happens to be my Klaine fic called The Moon fic, with a whopping 49 words. Behold, The Moon fic:
You'd think that a 16 second podfic would be a fucking cakewalk but I am at my parents' house and I recorded this in secret to avoid telling them that I was reading a fic about fictional homosexuals on the moon so I didn't have a second screen aka I did this whole 49 words fic from memory and even though it's literally only 49 words, I did 10 takes cause I kept messing up the text. I guess I will also have to learn how to edit and shit, since the fic I claimed is just over 1K.
Anyway, don't care too much about the quality of me reading out loud. That's not what this test was for. But how does it sound? I did read some tips in the Discord about maybe recording underneath a blanket or in a closet, so I might redo it from there just to see how it looks.

Did anyone else have like, personalities in mind for numbers when they were learning multiplication tables in school? Anyway:
12 is intimidating, strict
11 is wavy gravy, tie dye shirt cartoon hippy
9 and 10 are parental figures
8 is a very formal and conservative number.
7 and 6 are siblings with 7 being a protective older sibling type.
6 and 5 are friends but 7 hates 5, sees them as a bad influence
4 looks up to 8 and 12
3 is a friend and collaborator of 4, they like working together
2 is mature for their age because theyre depended on by all even numbers
1 is young and naive but special, chosen one.
0 is like the dill pickles of numbers. Baby character added in the later seasons

TADC Episode 2 Thoughts
Jax continues to be my babygirl. He sucks so much and makes absolutely 0 effort to be a better person every day. Yes, boy, give us NOTHING!!
Okay, this isn't necessarily true. This does, however, feel like it lines up into my headcanoned backstory for Jax being some kind of spoiled upstart who is used to getting his way and disconnecting himself from other people - I really liked the idea of him being the son of the boss, so that's where my ideas remain. There's definitely something connecting him to keys. That's why I think he has a debug key, or a keylogger in his system that no one else does. Too bad it's just cheat codes to nonsense adventures that don't mean anything. His hyperviolent streak is new, but it checks out.
Pomni got a bit snarkier this episode, which I really liked. I truly do think that her and Jax would have SUCH a good dynamic...if they weren't pushed to opposite sides of the plot. I truly do feel like she's the one person who could possibly yank him by the ears and say "Hey, stop that." and he might even consider listening. Funnybunny was neither proven nor disproven in this episode.
That is more than I can say for Showtime, though! Yeouch! Getting ahead of myself.
Pomni and Ragatha...do not seem to be close and I can't blame Pomni for that. Ragatha does kind of feel like she's condescending to her at times with her people-pleaser ways, and I can see how that'd be upsetting to say the least. I don't see any chemistry for them, though, if I'm being honest. It seems like since the first episode the gap has only widened to slot into this awkward space...they seem like they can be friends, but shipping-wise this one sure took a turn.
Oh Gangle. Sweet Gangle. Submissive and agreeable Gangle. You probably deserved better in this episode, but at least you got to drive. Kinger didn't even get that. Zooble didn't even go.
And...Gummigoo. Man. Yeah. There went Caine, with all that. The 'friendly Caine' ideas are going down pretty fast. I liked Gummi as a character - he brought something unique to the table that I thought could've been capitalized on as an NPC who discovered the true nature of his world...but Caine said enough was enough and killed the poor sucker. Well. It is what it is.
The theory is going around now also about the main cast maybe having an npc amogus, but...I dunno how to feel about that. The obvious choice WOULD be Jax, but I kind of don't want it to be. I can see appeal on multiple sides for that, though.
Also, yeah, the visual gags were better than the verbal ones this ep. Overall, pretty solid. 7/10.

this is obvious to mathy types, not so much to the rest of us
trying to fall back asleep this morning, and my brain decided to think a whole lot about the weird and wonderful things that happen when you multiply by nine
like, when I was learning multiplication and hadn't gotten anywhere near memorizing the times table, Mom told me about the trick of subtracting one from a number to get the tens place, then the ones place is whatever you add to that number to equal nine, because numbers multiplied by nine always end up as numbers that add together to make nine
but that was only for multiplying nine by one through ten, and no-one ever told me the shortcut beyond that, so my brain--THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SLEEPING--decided to figure it out, and what I came up with is not what I'm seeing online (although I'm seeing a lot of shortcuts for multiplying by nine online, so I'm sure it's out there)
So, multiplying 1-10 by nine is subtract one from the number, then after that goes whatever you'd add to make nine. I figured out that 11-20 is subtract two and then add whatever is needed to make nine. 21-30 is subtract three, 31-40 is subtract four, etc. By the time I got to 101 and beyond, I was actually falling back asleep, but I suspect it's consistent, just a bit harder to juggle mentally (and we live in the age of calculators so it's just trivia at this point)
and then there's the "multiples of nine always add up to nine" thing: 9 x 5 = 45, 4 + 5 =9 9 x 11 = 99, 9 + 9 = 18, 1 + 8 = 9
but
when it gets to bigger numbers 9 x 478 = 4302, 4 + 3 + 0 + 2 = 9 however 43 + 02 = 45, 4 + 5 = 9 and 40 + 32 = 72; 7 + 2 = 9 as well as 320 + 4 = 324; 3 + 2 + 4 = 9 and oh hey 24 + 03 = 27; 2 + 7 = 9 likewise 24 + 30 = 54; 5 + 4 = 9 and you can keep going with any combination of any grouping of numbers you get by multiplying by nine ultimately adding up to nine
I know the 'subtract one and add something to make nine' thing worked for me from the start, but when I have tried to explain it to anyone else, they have always given me very strange looks, and I know there are other shortcuts to multiplying by nine, so this isn't to teach anyone and it's not to ask for suggestions
it's mostly just to show what my brain does when I should be sleeping, and that I am not a particularly math-oriented person

RaR Musings #16: Ability Definitions
Wanted to brainstorm a bit of the mechanics outlined in Musings 11, because as I work on converting old work to the new system, it's a good idea to assess whether my feelings about it are the result of nostalgia and affection, or genuine design sensibilities telling me I'm making a mistake.
To reiterate:
The goal of the old system was revolving the game around "Earn 1 Success to achieve something your character can do easily, and without severe consequence, as an adult human." Rolling [attribute 1-5]d10 + ([proficiency 1, 0-5]+[proficiency2, 0-5])x[specialization 0-5] meant it was relatively easy to produce the 10, /10 = 1 Success, but that as high as 100 (or 10 successes) was possible, with proficiency5, proficiency5, specialization 5, and attribute 5, rolling a 10 on all five dice. "Monstrous Strength" multiplied the Strength attribute's d10 roll result, leading to reliably higher, but not guaranteed, success rolls, and values above 100.
The pros of this meant you could reliably skirt the need of a diceroll if 'skill' allowed, but the cons of this meant adding results of 1-10 multiple times per diceroll, often. I miss it's "extended roll", where you could keep rolling dice, generating successes, until the successes exceeded the necessary threshold, like 15 successes to repair a device, with skilled engineers netting 3-4 successes per roll, and the untrained landing 1 at best, and less than 0, breaking it, at worst.
The new system sees 'success' as a threshold, with some fuzziness around the edges: results of Fail And (1), Fail (2-4), Fail But (5), Win But (6), Win (7-9), and Win And (10) meant some randomness, but not a binary. Excess attribute, proficiency, specialization, and gear all "decrease the difficulty" by one-point increments, while Monstrous adds +5 per increment. Contests aren't the result of two pools of results being added up and compared, but of applying the difference of the two positives, and applying the resulting bonus, or penalty, to the 1d10 roll. You can also use a d100, if 10-point/1% granularity is more preferential to 1-point/10% granularity, with Exceptional Successes being on a 100, reduced by (proficiency x specialization) amount.
The pros of this means you can roll only one die, knowing well beforehand your chances of success or failure, and the math is all adding numbers >5 ahead of time, for a system that allows a visible success range on a sliding table. The cons, is that this is less additive; there's not as much granularity as on "extended rolls", because you can't generate more than 1-2 'successes' per increment.
To solve this, "Success Thresholds" of 5-point increments above "Win And" are probably necessary, essentially rolling 15, 20, 25, 30 on a d10. If 5-10 is 1 Success, 11-15 is 2 successes, 16-20 is 3, and so on. This should PROBABLY mean that specialization adds more than a single point of value, but +5 per point, effectively thrusting your result ahead a guaranteed success threshold, feels like a lot. If I do that, I'll have to be more careful about adding specializations, or use the design that specializations can each only be used as a Who, What, When, Where, Why, or How, up to a total of 5 spec. Alternatively, since +5-per-spec is more or less the same as +5-per-Monstrous, specialization lets you fight monsters with skill rather than just raw power.
(Late notes, this also means a benefit to 'assists'; using multiple people to hold up a rock, means you add everyone's dicerolls, and divide by 5 to figure out what "Success Tier" you're in, letting enough people simulate the effects of one creature with Monstrous Strength).
So, as a result of this, our standard deviation for success thresholds is 10 points, or 5 in either direction, but also retain the ability to add values together, theoretically infinitely. Por que no los dos.
Having to add 10< sums together shouldn't be regular, but instead for things that might last a while, or that bring the whole table together for a single task. Otherwise, it ends up being obnoxious. The bigger risk now is, with two different ways to read what is objectively the exact same number, if players will get confused or not.

When I set out to make Road and Ruin, I new that I definitely wanted to have better ability cohesion, teamwork mechanics, extended actions, specialization for task, and material components than a game like Dungeons and Dragons. World of Darkness accounted for a lot of that, but it lacked the kind of, je ne sais quoi that medieval fantasy wargaming possesses. What it did have was lore. SO much lore, and so wonderfully interwoven into the very abilities that players would get to choose and cast.
Road and Ruin uses "skill trees", but I bristle at the accusation. When I think of skill trees, I think of these massive, sprawling spiderwebs of nonsense, +1s everywhere, where it's impossible to get a feel for what pushing in any given direction is actually meant to do.
Instead, RAR groups abilities not just by theme, but by aesthetic, and while you have to purchase up through ranks of abilities to get to stronger skills, those skills are much more specialized to those themes, and the 'weaker' skills are nothing to sneeze at either: they lay the foundation for what the stronger skills can do, but they're much more versatile, and can fit into just about any build. To represent this, we call these 'dip', and represent crossclassing almost in themselves; when you gain an ability in RAR from a rank of a skill you didn't previously have ranks in, you gain a level, and with only so many levels in the game, dipping for a spell here or a technique there means that you level up quickly, but as a jack of all trades, rather than a committed specialist with powerful skills.
Magic the Gathering is another inspiration for this mindset: each color is coded with a variety of overlapping themes, and dual-color or tri-color are even more pure explorations of those themes, easier to predict, but slower to get going. Keywords form a basis for entire decks, and when a card effect names two different keywords, you start to gain really interesting synergies and ideas. The downside of this, is a vertical learning curve; player skill is heavily measured in player awareness of skill synergies, and even of the existence of specific cards, more than just familiarity with the cards in your own deck and when to play them. Monte Cook calls this Ivory Tower game design, where "rules are collectable", and players are expected to figure out which abilities are good, useable, bad, and objectively a trap.
Rather than come up with a million different ways to accomplish the same goal, where more than half are designed to entrap you and punish newcomers to the game, my goals for Road and Ruin are that every ability should be good, but at WHAT is the question. There will be different ways to accomplish the same task; shooting a goblin can be done with an arrow launched from a bow, or launched via mana, but it's expensive to land only 1dmg per 1MP. This might be construed as a trap, but the ability to move things with magic has enormously more applications than the ability to shoot an arrow. Plus, if it is pursued as offensive magic, the spell can grow, and be customized, rewarding dedicated magic players, without necessarily stepping on the toes of archers.

Each ability should, I think, be quantified by different features:
Proficiency. Given some 60-70 proficiencies, to a maximum of 5 each, a diversity of proficiencies is warranted. Granting a range of proficiencies helps with theming and letting people have what they want, but runs the risk of making it too easy to max out a proficiency. Consider implementing a hard cap rule of "maximum proficiency based on level", as an option.
Specialization. Should follow at least two of Who, What, When, Where, Why, or How. Overly niche specializations can be at low levels, while broader ones can be handed out at higher levels.
EFFECT. What does it do?
AREA. How far away can it be applied? How many targets?
TIME. How quickly does it cast? How long does it last?
COST. What prevents repeated use?
RETURN. Does it give you a resource?
SCALING. Can it be amplified, and how? By cost, or by stats?
Mythology. What story does this ability tell? Is it associated with a fixture in the lore? Can you build a campaign or a character around it?
As an example case, the skill list Fortress Guard has rank1 dip called Wyrd Ward, a basic magical barrier. As 'spell dip', you only unlock the actual spell component if you climb to rank2, unless you're a spellcaster class, who bypasses this limitation in the name of collecting as many spells as possible. At rank1 though, you have to get something.
At rank 1, the skill grants proficiency in one weight of shield of choice, or Weaving magic, for conjuration. This means even a non-wizard stands to gain from purchasing the skill.
At rank 2, "A mystical barrier lessens the impact of one incoming attack, from a single direction, granting +1 temp hp, +1 per mental saving throw success, against the attack. Costs 1MP, and can be positioned up to 1m away (NEAR range).
With Intention, and a mana cluster, the barrier has a starting base health equal to mana spent, +1 per concentration success, and can be moved up to your WITS attribute in meters. Value can be allocated to adjacent spaces.
This is... a lot. The old system would have you roll (FOCUS)d10, add them together, adding your proficiency, and find a range around 10-30, or +1 to +3 successes, for 2-4hp. Concentrating would ask that you start low, and ramp, and the mana cluster would add 2-5 to the max health of the shield, and be able to move 1-5m around, based on your Wits. This blocks 4-9 arrows, or 1-2 sword attacks, or 0-1 heavy weapon swings, on average. Not the best example of an emergency, reactive spell.
A simple fix would be that it IS a shield. Reactively, it's a smalls shield, which promotes parrying, and different costs/concentration gives a medium or large shield, better for absorbing blows.
But what if we ALREADY have a shield? Does it stack? And what if the threat isn't an attack, and we need to deflect a falling rock or something? Can it stop a wall of water?
And what about the mythology? What is the spell actually doing? Does air density increase, slowing blades and arrows? Does it apply a gravitational force? Is it a mass pulled from another dimension, or made of mana itself? And can it create a bubble, or be used offensively? Clearly there's a lot to consider here.
Fortress Guard unifies themes of gravity, durability, and equipment, largely from a standing, immovable state. "The battlefield heeds those who bury themselves beneath layers of iron and steel, a walking tank who fears no arrows and shies no blade, for where they go and where they stand receives the blessing of their protection." But how this skill is meant to interact with other skill lists is also something that needs consideration. Condensing the air into a solid would have wide applications, and factor in to the later skill, Formless Fortress, but the gravitational theme could also be used offensively. Summoning it from elsewhere is one thing, and weaving it from mana itself is quite another.
Wyrd Ward, then, should be able to observe multiple builds.
Wyrd Ward expels a cloud of mana, which has weak gravitational properties. Forces passing through the Ward is slowed and reduced by 1 damage.
Each additional 1MP expels more mana, to either cover a wider area, increase the density and protection in the area, or increase the cloud's duration. So, 1MP +(0 +2 density +1 round), is 3 protection, for 2 rounds, for 4MP. Which is, very expensive, but very strong.
Augments for this spell include: increase the gravitational repulsion, prevent humanoids from entering the barrier, launch the cloud as a bolt, apply as a coating to shields, apply as a passive armor to conjure and summon spells.
When combined with features outside of Fortress Guard, you'd get Repelling Bolt, Conjure Shield, Force Wave, Mirror Shield, Graviton Sword, Shield Shatter, Fallen Down/SkyFall, Solid Air, Meteor, Binding Rope, Hand Parry, Telekinetic Throw, Wall Walk, or Reverse Gravity.
The actual scaling is still in question. I think that it's better if it's a spell, but there should still be something for halfcasters or muscle wizards.

BONUS POST: =======
Warning! This post will be heavily in-depth and very technical!
So, to pose a question, why do Chests in Persona 5 Palaces provide multiple items while Mementos Chests only offer one?

The answer is, surprisingly, related to how the game loads Mementos Field data and search objects ( i.e Vases, Piggy Banks, etc ).
Every Palace field in the game points to one Entry in the data tabble FLDOBJFLAG.FTD, a file that specifies Chest ( or "TBOX" ) contents for one field. Every Entry has 10 Subentries for Chests, with each having 6 Item slots.

Additionally, most Palace field's binaries ( .FBN ) contain a chunk to set the position and appearance of each Chest in that field.

Critically, there is no I.D system in either of these files. The game strictly relies on numerical order to determine which FBN Entry is tied to which OBJFLAG Subentry, with FBN Chest #2 being tied to OBJFLAG Subentry #2 and so on.
This system, while functional in the small scale, immediately presents issues when you consider that Mementos is randomized by chunks!

Now the normal system requires a workaround to be able to function without having a definitive way to match chest #'s with OBJFLAG Subentries.
ATLUS's solution to supply items when the conditions and environment are randomized is to exploit their own previously-built systems that supply items at random. Namely, Search Objects.
While Chest contents in Palaces is entirely deterministic, Search Object contents ( or "TBOXRND" ) is only partially so.
Similar to Chests, every Palace field in the game points toward an entry in the data table DATTBOXRND.FTD, a file that specifies what item sets can be found in Search Objects on that field. Interestingly, every Entry has 4 Subentries with each Subentry containing 10 potential Items.

Every one of the 10 potential choices per Subentry comes with an Item ID and the Percentage Chance in that Subentry for that Item. So, in the screenshots above, any Field pointing to TBOXRND Entry #3 with any Search Object using Subentry #0 has a 60% of an Amethyst and 40% of an Aquamarine.
Every Search Object is manually assigned in scripting what Subentry out of the 4 to use.

Notably, however, the struct of TBOXRND entries means only one item can be obtained per Search Object.
And this is where ATLUS's solution and technical limitations come to play. Mementos Chests never reference OBJFLAG at any point! Mementos fields are, instead, assigned a TBOXRND Entry to utilize for both Search Objects AND Treasure Chests. ( Side Note: Search Objects in Mementos are these small diamond cages. )

Mementos therefore utilizes the Subentries as follows:
Subentry / Set #0 is used for Locked Chests
Subentry / Set #1 is used for Regular Chests
Subentry / Set #3 is used for Search Objects
And there it is! Mementos Chests only provide 1 Item due to a technical limitation with the Search Object system.
