A low-cost, high-performance multinary intermetallic compound as an active electrocatalyst for hydrogen production
To exploit hydrogen as a clean energy source for future, scientists have been striving to develop novel processes to produce hydrogen efficiently and cost-effectively. A team composed of scientists who specialize in structure materials at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has developed a high-performance electrocatalyst based on an innovative concept originally for developing alloys. The new electrocatalyst can be produced at large scale and low cost, providing a new paradigm in the wide application of hydrogen production by electrochemical reaction in future.
The research was co-led by Professor Lu Jian, CityU's vice president (research and technology) and chair professor of mechanical engineering, and Professor Liu Chain-tsuan, university distinguished professor of the College of Engineering. The findings were published in Advanced Materials with the title "A Novel Multinary Intermetallic as an Active Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution."
When consumed in a fuel cell, hydrogen only produces water without any generation of carbon dioxide. Therefore, it is commonly regarded as an ideal clean source to tackle the problems of greenhouse gases and energy shortages. Compared to other methods of hydrogen production, electrochemical water splitting is a relatively environmentally friendly process with great potential for industrial applications. However, most current electrocatalysts are noble-metal based, such as platinum and palladium. Their high costs and scarcity greatly hinder the development and application of this hydrogen production method.

Comgender Girl-Boy Pride Flag
Tumblr media
Comgender Boy-Girl (comgirlboy, comboygirl, binary plurigender, male-female multigender, comgalguy, comguygal or man-woman) is someone who identifies fully, entirely and integrally as man-woman, mixing comboy + comgirl.
It’s not necessarily suptilian bigender or androgyne, because they can be polygender, amplusian (genderfluid, genderflux or fluidflux), pangender, trigender, quadgender, quintgender, apollogender, cadogender, etc.

WHAT ARE REFLECTION PAITINGS? So when we buy reflection paintings, do we have to give double the price of the piece? Ha, just joking. Or maybe not. Paintings that have a mirror image of themselves in the same paintings are reflection paintings. Reflection paintings consist of varied subjects as a center. But nature is the most common one. They offer a picture within a picture that draws the viewer into the painting and are hence also known as mimicry paintings. These paintings' capacity to reflect reality, while subtly altering or distorting it, is used to create ambiguity and mystery in interiors. In reflection paintings, you get to enjoy a scene or object in two different forms. One is a defined form and the other is a reflected abstract form. These paintings define the multinary beauty of the subject. Some reflection paintings have binary, trinary, quaternary, and more reflections to allude to its beauty. These paintings fool play and fool with our visual system. Mimicking the actual scene or object the reflection paintings consist of different reflecting surfaces ranging from mirrors to water to glassy materials. In interiors, the essence of reflection painting is that these paintings stir memories or ignite dreams and hopes. #art #paintings #painting #india #artist #interior #interiordesigner #home #homedecor #walldecor #homedecorideas https://instagr.am/p/CdINmrWvZhR/

SIGN-UP for updates (this is a free event): https://ift.tt/rc8YCTS Machines are getting smart (sorta). AI, fuelled by machine learning brings the end of routine-tasks for us. Yet it's NOT the end of Human Work - it's just the end of (some) routines. How can we get ready? I think that in a digital and fully interconnected world (ETA 2030) it will not be our technology that differentiates us - it will be our HUMANITY. It will not be our efficiency, our productivity, our optimization or our smartness and powerful intellect that will 'beat' the machines - it will be our human-only skills. It will be everything that machines have a hard time with. Recall the Moravec Paradox: whatever is simply for a human, is hard for a machine (and vice versa). So what are 'human-only' skills and traits? To start with, imagination, intuition, emotions, ethics, values, compassion, empathy and consciousness. Machines are binary but humans are multinary. Organisms aren't algorithms (yes, I will explain) and while we should try hard to build machines that have competence we should not strive for them to develop consciousness (see Stuart Russell 'Human Compatible). If your job is 100% routine i.e. commodity work (and indeed very very few jobs really are) the machines - software and hardware - will take your job. If your job is something like 50% routine you need to start adding unique values that are not routines or can be commoditised. Values that machines won't match anytime soon - what I call the Androrithms. Thus, the future also entails a total reboot of learning, education and training. STEM education must be matched with what I call HECI - humanities, ethics, creativity and imagination. Watch my 2020 film 'How the future works' https://ift.tt/xuPoISJ Our ultimate job is... to be human! I will start with a 15 minute presentation (yes I promise!) on the future of work, showing some brand-new memes, and then I will take questions and comments from the audience using Youtube and LinkedIn comments. This event will live-stream on 7 platforms including Youtube and LinkedIn and Twitter @gleonhard - not on Facebook (sorry - and see why, here). URLs will be shared the day before the event. Go to www.gerdtalks.com for more details on the show, in general. by Gerd Leonhard

Vacancy-driven extended stability of cubic metastable Ta-Al-N and Nb-Al-N phases
Publication date: 15 October 2017 Source:Surface and Coatings Technology, Volume 326, Part A Author(s): Ferdinand Pacher, Paul H. Mayrhofer, David Holec Quantum mechanical calculations had been previously applied to predict phase stability in many ternary and multinary nitride systems. While the predictions were very accurate for the Ti-Al-N system, some discrepancies between theory and experiment were obtained in the case of other systems. Namely, in the case of Ta-Al-N, the calculations tend to overestimate the minimum Al content necessary to obtain a metastable solid solution with a cubic structure. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of the impact of vacancies on the phase fields in quasi-binary TaN-AlN and NbN-AlN systems. Our calculations clearly show that presence of point defects strongly enlarges the cubic phase field in the TaN-AlN system, while the effect is less pronounced in the NbN-AlN case. The present phase stability predictions agree better with experimental observations of physical vapour deposited thin films reported in the literature than that based on perfect, non-defected structures. This study shows that a representative structural model is crucial for a meaningful comparison with experimental data. Read more from Journal of Safety Research http://ift.tt/2tJUODX

Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Multinary Layered Metal Chalcogenide Nanomaterials
Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS2, WS2, TiS2, TaS2, ReS2, MoSe2 and WSe2, have attracted considerable attention over the past six years owing to their unique properties and great potential in a wide range of applications. Aiming to achieve tunable properties and optimal application performances, great effort is devoted to the exploration of 2D multinary layered metal chalcogenide nanomaterials, which include ternary metal chalcogenides with well-defined crystal structures, alloyed TMDs, heteroatom-doped TMDs and 2D metal chalcogenide heteronanostructures. These novel 2D multinary layered metal chalcogenide nanomaterials exhibit some unique properties compared to 2D binary TMD counterparts, thus holding great promise in various potential applications including electronics/optoelectronics, catalysis, sensors, biomedicine, and energy storage and conversion with enhanced performances. This article focuses on the state-of-art progress on the preparation, characterization and applications of ultrathin 2D multinary layered metal chalcogenide nanomaterials.

The Semiconductor Industry opportunities for Chemists
Dr Richard Pilkington
Tumblr media
Dr Pilkington is a senior lecturer on University of Salford his interests are around physics and chemistry, but currently he is focused on deposition and characterisation of thin film multinary photovoltaic materials. (Sounds scary!)
Dr Pilkington told us overall about the semiconductors, which are usually a chemical solid substance or compound that has ability to conduct electricity under some conditions (like temperature). But what they actually are and do we really need them? Yes, we do need them! Good example is silicon, which is one of the materials used as a semiconductor to produce for instance solar panels. To create pure silicon The Czochralski Puller (Czohralski- Polish chemist, specialist at metals and their production. One of the people that makes me proud of my countyJ) technique is used, then we can get amazing 99.9999999 of pure silicon. They are several silicon precursors such as Disilane, Methylsilane, Silane or Silicon Tetrachloride. Also numerous reactants have been used for silicon production and similar products.
The real message from this lecture was to give an idea, to still not sure students how many opportunities we have in industry, especially with our chemical knowledge. The doors of industry are open for everybody who has a chemistry in their background.

Here's a brief keynote I gave at a meeting of international music schools in Europe, the other day. Thanks to Muziekschool Amsterdam for inviting me! The future of music education is hybrid: both virtual / online as well as RIL, face to face, in 'meatspace'. Because technology is not what we seek, it's HOW we seek. Anything that can be automated and virtualized, will be - but anything that can not (like MUSIC), becomes infinitely more valuable. Machines are binary, but humans are multinary. What really matters to humans is not data or logic - it's experiences, relationships and engagement; and music is a key to being human.
