The next time some movie snob complains about the number of superhero movies in theaters politely point out that between 1950 and 1954 there were 57 SINGING COWBOY movies released in theaters... A sub-genre of a subgenre.
And keep in mind that this was before the age of the mulitplex. Your local theater played one, maybe two movies per screening. Hell the 1953 Tex Avery cartoon “TV of Tomorrow” has a gag where a viewer punches out the screen of his television because he can’t find anything to watch but identical looking western, so he goes to the movie theater in disgust only for it to be playing another freaking Western!

This code incorporates Arduino State Change Detection and Debouncing example code by David A. When timer reaches 0, press once to reset. To reset before reaching 0, press the button 3 times quickly in under 1-second. To pause the timer, press the button again. When the timer reaches zero, the display flashes and a piezo beeps. Uses two 7-segment displays to countdown from 99 to 0. Program the Arduino with the following code: /* Get experimenting and see for yourself by building your own! While this may seem complicated, this is actually a commonplace technique for controlling LED displays.
#Countdown timers instructions series#
Even though only one light can be controlled at a time, thanks to the phenomenon of persistence of vision, if both lights are flickered on and off in series fast enough, we perceive them to both be on all the time. This technique allows only one light to be on at any given time by connecting them together and then letting the Arduino control which display gets connected to ground. This project is ideal for timing any life activity that happens in 99 seconds or less.Īn interesting thing about this project is that the two displays collectively have 16 pins which are used, but the Arduino is able to control both using only 9 pins thanks to a technique called mulitplexing. When the timer reaches 0, the display flashes and a buzzer beeps. Written by Simay Updated over a week ago. The timer controls two 7-segment displays which count down from 99 to 0, and can be stopped and started using a button. This article provides instructions on creating a countdown timer within a Guide or Hotspot. The Arduino Countdown Timer is a fun weekend project for beginners who wants to move on to something slightly more advanced.

we’re looking at this plc instruction list and there’s this function call and the instructor asked if we understood the function so we all look it up in the library and it’s literally 3 inputs 1 output, if the first input is low the output becomes the 2nd input if the 1st is high the output becomes the 3rd input. and i was like oh this is just a mulitplexer, the instructor says no not really, starts explaining it and i’m like th-that’s literally just a 2-1 multiplexer and he goes oh i guess so we don’t call it that in german (they call it a selection gate)

Hotel Review: Pullman Paris La Défense
(c) pullmanhotels.com
Slightly outside the centre, Hotel Pullman Paris La Défense is still a good option, especially for those who find it useful to be located in the business district.
Standing proudly like a cruise liner among the jostling flotilla of tower blocks by the Grande Arche at the heart of La Defénse, The Pullman is emphatically at home among the gleaming, glazed and geometric modernist monoliths that are the hallmark of Paris’s prestigious business district. La Defénse is, however, a good deal closer to the centre than London’s Docklands; the commuter line, the RER, will drop you here in just five minutes from the Champs Elysées.
As a rule, in central Paris you won’t find anything taller than the iconic six-storey Haussmann townhouses (the exceptions that prove the rule are, of course, les tours Montparnasse and Eiffel, and the Notre-Dame cathedral) thanks to stricter planning rules than in London.
Consequently, just as London has relocated much of its financial centre to the Docklands, the Parisian corporate world has congregated in what has become, in the past 30 years, Europe’s largest business district.
(c) pullmanhotels.com
Stepping into the lobby, a short walk from La Defénse Métro and RER station, a sense of space and calm welcomes the visitor to the newly refurbished hotel. Intelligent use of pared down colour suggests an international sophistication befitting of a world-class destination. The work of Argentinian Marcelo Joulia creates a harmonious, warm and inviting business destination space. The theme is connectivity, dynamism and modernity.
Who for
Being at the heart of the business district suggests the location is perfect for conferences, business travellers and larger groups. Yet there are excellent transport links providing fast access to the city centre, meaning the most seasoned traveller who prefers an international standard hotel with decent sized rooms and peaceful noise levels should feel at home, whether on business or pleasure.
Accommodation
(c) pullmanhotels.com
The 382 rooms (Classic, Superior and Deluxe) and suites of up to 100m², offer a good level of modern luxury and comfort, including Nespresso® machines for coffee lovers and huge LED TV screens, which cleverly rotate from bed to office area in the deluxe room and suites. Fussy sleepers will appreciate extra mattress toppers, while the rainshower is a thoughtful – and invigorating – touch. As befits a business travel hotel, there is free fibre-optic wi-fi throughout, and docking stations are available for your tunes to help turn room time to relaxation.
(c) pullmanhotels.com
Flashes of vibrant accent colour break up the gentler palettes of grey and wooden hues, which give a serenely calm and natural feel to an otherwise modernist architectural area. Clean lines are softened by clever use of fabrics, shielding the windows from the concrete exteriors.
Food and drink
(c) pullmanhotels.com
The restaurant indulges international tastes by offering a choice of cooking styles including a tandoori oven. The guest is invited to choose from up to five ways of cooking the same main ingredient. If this sounds complicated, relax – the waiting staff are well used to explaining the nuances. All dinners start with an immaculately conceived trio of tapas – on the night we visited this comprised a gazpacho with tricolour croutons, alongside sardines with fennel and mango, and a bellini-style goat’s cheese disc showered with pistachio shavings. Highly flavoursome, and aesthetically pleasing to boot, all natural shades of green, peach and cream. The international flavour theme continued with a selection of olive oils hailing from Andalucía or the Greek isles, to dip with breads of diverse flavour such as curry, tomato, caraway seed and even a green-hued mint version.
Starters and mains are a selection of innovative French classics with a modern humorous twist – such as popcorn with foie gras, and a scallop soup – the liquid arriving separately to be poured on to a bed of crispy noodles. This is food to make you smile and to create talking points. Our mains were decent but not unmanageably-sized portions of veal steak and chicken, both with thoughtful and well-dressed salad combinations. Spicy vegetable accompaniments continued the world theme with judiciously chosen herbs and oils.
Intelligently selected wines target the discerning palate, although the steep jump in prices beyond the 30 euro mark would appear to suggest a nod to the liberal expense accounts of a bygone era.
Facilities
(c) pullmanhotels.com
As one would expect of a business hotel of international standard, all the usual benefits are here, from wi-fi to a business centre. Staff are, of course, multi-lingual, and the hotel even offers a complimentary translating and interpreting service. What might surprise you, though, are the children’s services, complete with babysitting, and the fact that pets are welcome throughout. There is a fully-equipped gym with a wet room sauna.
Local activities
On the doorstep is one of Europe’s largest shopping centres, Les Quatre Temps, with 250 boutique shops, a 14-screen mulitplex showing most films in the original language with French subtitles, and a wide range of international snacking options.
There are also well-laid-out gardens stretching down towards the river along the Esplanade de la Defénse towards the Pont de Neuilly, as pretty in spring as any other part of vieux Paris. For those who like to recharge by way of a nature excursion, the huge Bois de Boulogne sprawls just south over the river, best accessed via Porte Maillot Métro.
But a few minutes by Métro and Paris proper is there to be explored, starting at the top of one of the most famous avenues in the world – so much to see and explore, history, old world charm, stunningly uniform Haussman architecture. Café culture, elegant boutiques, churches, parks, gardens… Paris unfolds its charms before you like the slowly opening petals of an exotic bloom in spring.
Insider’s tip: For a panoramic view of le tout Paris, head for the roof of the surprisingly square-shaped Grande Arche. The view is better, and you’ll avoid the crush of the crowds of l’Arc de Triomphe dwarfed by this, its more imposing modern rival.

Classic rooms from €151 per night.

Getting there
La Défense is well-sited as a business district, being a lot closer to the centre of town than, say, London’s Docklands; a short Métro ride of around five minutes will drop you at the Arc de Triomphe and the 1st and 8th arrondiessements that are the heart of chic Paris, with their upmarket boutiques and restaurants. The overland RER line from La Défense also ensures good – and quick – transport links to central Paris. The centre is also easily reached in ten or 15 minutes by taxi, plentiful from the Pullman and booked as usual by the concierge desk.

Ennismore Arena on target for 2-year financial payback with REALice
by Colleen O'Shea
At a recent Climate Change Action Plan meeting, organized by Sustainable Peterborough for municipal staff and politicians in the greater Peterborough, ON area, a presentation was made on how the Township of Selwyn is reducing energy and making good ice at the Ennismore Recreation Centre by using REALice. Scott Warren, the Facilities Maintenance Co-ordinator for the Township, explained that by going to the cold water resurfacing technology, the energy spend for the single pad ice arena has been dramatically reduced, keeping them on track for a 2-year financial payback.
“A two-year financial payback on any energy conservation project is very quick,” Warren points out. “Compared to other energy conservation projects like LED lighting, REALice has a considerably faster ROI.”
Because of incentives available from SaveONenergy and a second program from Enbridge Gas that was soon to expire, Warren had to move quickly to get municipal funds made available for the purchase. To do so, the township took advantage of sustainability reserves the Township generated from six solar projects.
In addition, Warren and the Township's arena operators wanted to do their research on the product, so they spoke with a selection of facility operators who are using the system. That included a facility operator in Yellowknife, YK, who had installed REALice to replace a pre-existing system cold water resurfacing system that wasn't working for them. Warren says that since making the switch to REALice in July 2017, operators at the Yellowknife Mulitplex have had great success making their ice.
The REALice system has no moving parts, doesn't consume any electrical energy, and does not require chemicals to treat the water to make good ice. In order to see how much energy they would save by using REALice, Warren made use of REALice's online energy savings calculator and input data about the arena, such as what temperature they were heating their water to, their electrical consumption, their hours of operation, and length of their ice season, all numbers which are unique to the Ennismore Recreation Centre.
The District of Selwyn's municipal council endorsed the project and provided funding from the sustainability reserve so they could move quickly to install REALice.
Since installing REALice in August 2017, they've calculated they will save an average of $12,000 annually. Their annual electrical energy savings were estimated at $9,800 and Natural gas savings were estimated at $2,300, which amounts to roughly saving the equivalent of a month's hydro bill for their facility.
Arena operators at the Ennismore Recreation Centre are now running their ice plant 2°F warmer than they did when they used hot water, and in the 60 days after REALice was installed they saved 27.5% on Natural Gas consumption compared to 2016. Their utility provider, Enbridge Gas, told them that it was approximately 4°C colder during the same period as compared to 2016, but in spite of this, they are consuming less gas. Additionally, their hydro consumption was reduced by ~ 13% in the 60 days after installation. These findings lined up well with the REALice energy savings estimate.
FINANCIAL PAYBACK
The bottom line is they are very pleased with the results so far and it looks like REALice will help them meet or beat the estimated two-year payback.
Warren invites anyone who wants to visit the Ennismore Recreation Centre to make the trip, take a tour and talk with him and the Township's arena operators about the system.
“The proof is in the pudding,” he says. “At the end of the day, an arena operator wants to make good quality ice. And they want NO feedback - or good feedback - from user groups. If you can achieve all that AND save energy, it's a win all around,” Warren says.

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' soars to 745 million USD worldwide
Disney-Lucasfilm`s Star Wars: The Last Jedi is showing plenty of force at mulitplexes worldwide with $745.4 million globally as of Sunday. The North American take has hit $365 million in its first 10 days as of Sunday with the studio projecting another $32 million on Christmas Day on Monday - making it the third highest domestic release in 2017 following Beauty and the Beast with $504 million and Wonder Woman at $412 million.
Stars Wars: The Last Jedi has totaled $380.3 million in the international box office. It is already the top-grossing film of 2017 in both Denmark and Sweden and the fourth highest grosser in the overall European market. The U.K. is the top market with $67.4 million, followed by Germany with $40 million, France with $29.3 million and Australia with $26.9 million. The Last Jedi, which picks up following the events of 2015`s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is so far the 87th highest worldwide grosser of all time, trailing 2016`s Suicide Squad by $1.4 million. Rian Johnson directed with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong`o and Domhnall Gleeson reprising their roles. It`s the final screen role for Fisher, who died a year ago. Sony`s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Universal`s Pitch Perfect 3 have also opened solidly while Fox`s The Greatest Showman is drawing respectably at the domestic box office. But moviegoers are showing little interest in Paramount`s Downsizing and Warner Bros.-Alcon`s Father Figures. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opened with the second-largest North American launch ever in its first weekend with $220 million. It faced competition for the first time on Dec. 20, with Sony`s action comedy Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which is leading the rest of the pack with $34 million at 3,765 sites for Friday-Sunday and a six-day total of around $64 million. Josh Greenstein, Sony`s president of worldwide marketing and distribution, pointed to the A- CinemaScore as an indication that Jumanji is attracting all demographics. "We have incredible momentum as we go into the biggest moviegoing week of the year," he added. Jumanji also opened solidly with $49.5 million in 53 international markets, finishing ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 28 territories. Its top performance came in the U.K. with a second-place finish at $10.1 million including previews. Universal`s Pitch Perfect 3 took in $20.5 million at 3,447 theaters and is on track for $27 million by the end of the four-day period. The threequel brought back the Bellas singing group with Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp and Hana Mae Lee reprising their roles. Pitch Perfect 3 also opened with $9.8 million in 14 international markets. Hugh Jackman`s The Greatest Showman, a musical take on circus founder P.T. Barnum, grossed $8.6 million at 3,006 venues during Friday-Sunday. The movie, produced by Chernin Entertainment, opened on Dec. 20 and is on track to take in about $18 million in its first six days. Downsizing took in a quiet $4.6 million at 2,558 theaters in its Friday-Sunday debut and should finish four-day frame with $6.2 million. Paramount paid $65 million for the near-future comedy in which Matt Damon agrees to be shrunk to five inches in exchange for a better life. Audiences were unimpressed, giving the film a C CinemaScore. Father Figures grossed a tepid $3.2 million at 3,902 theaters during Friday-Sunday and should add about $1 million on Monday. The film follows brothers - played by Owen Wilson and Ed Helms - who set out to find their biological father. The Post, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, dazzled with $495,000 at nine sites for Friday-Sunday. Fox will go wide with the journalism drama on Jan. 12.
