The view from my cabin looks roughly west across Portland Harbour to Chesil Beach and great sunsets. And just to one side are two Mulberry Harbour sections. Concrete structures floated and towed across to France to make the harbours following the D-day landings. Large numbers of Mulberry Harbour sections on view would have given clues of invasion to the enemy. But once completed they were sunk down onto the seabed until needed! #portlandharbour #mulberryharbour @kevthenatureguide (at Portland, Dorset, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPRcM_0jot_/?utm_medium=tumblr

Back in 2013 I visited #Normandy and specifically #omahabeach having had relations who landed on that historic day back in 1944; a day that changed history and the world. It was somewhat different the day I visited yet sitting on that beach there was an ominous sense of feeling. I am truly grateful to each and every single person who gave their lives so that we can have the life/freedom that we are blessed to enjoy. . . #dday #ddaylandings #normandy #france #omaha #allies #war #ww2 #life #respect #remembrance #casualtiesofwar #photooftheday #picoftheday #beach #sea #peace #mulberryharbour #death https://www.instagram.com/p/ByXjlkPDfrG/?igshid=10h9jgrn2cc2k

REMEMBER Today is the 77th anniversary of the D-day landings. From my cabin on the Island Sky in Portland Harbour I can see two joined sections of the concrete Mulberry Harbours. Once the Normandy beaches had been secured, numerous concrete sections were towed across the English Channel to create two artificial harbours that were crucial to bringing supplies ashore quickly. The German troops along the coast and inland assumed supplies would come in slowly by landing craft, with the chance to thwart and defeat the Allies. Instead, in the weeks following D-day, vast numbers of supplies were brought ashore quickly and it is said the Mulberry Harbours may have played a vital role in shortening the length of the war. Do Google Mulberry Harbour to discover more about these amazing structures. #mulberryharbour #d-day #portlandharbour (at Portland Harbour) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPxMlQUjJtq/?utm_medium=tumblr
