Happy Indie Animation Day!

I am not an indie animator myself, nor can I use twitter to do this, but I am a huge fan of the animation *medium* (NOT GENRE!), and would like to do my part to spread the word of some of my favourite #indieanimation projects for #indieanimationday , hosted by @thesunflower_club_ ! Working on a new short side series for Mugshot & Pollen!

These are called the 'Elsewhere Interlude's focusing on the other goings on of their world particularly their childhoods!

It's such a refresher to get back working with these characters and I can't wait to share them too!

Runners-up to my list of top 10 animated TV series of 2023

There are five series which are runners-up to this top-ten list. This includes My Dad the Bounty Hunter, with a collective score of 4.65 for seasons one and two, on Netflix, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal in Max, Star Wars: The Bad Batch on Disney+, Star Trek: Lower Decks on Paramount+, and Futurama on Hulu. While I also reviewed Kiff (on Disney+) and Velma (on Max), both were mediocre series in my opinion. On the other hand, I watched rad series like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off!, Hailey's On It!, and Scavengers Reign, which I enjoyed, and would recommend.

This contrasted with Gods' School, an ongoing indie animated series. There are few currently airing indie animations, other than Helluva Boss, Godspeed (created by Olan Rogers of Final Space) pilot, Zeurel's Monkey Wrench, EddsWorld, Bob's World, Nora and Zin, and Swift Spark and the Defense Five. Some indie animations are in development, such as Far-Fetched, Lackadaisy, Lumi and the Great Big Galaxy, Defenders of Alodia, Mugshot & Pollen, and The West Patch. Others include Captain Zero, LimeLight, Sunnyside: Royals of Cora, Battle of the Bands, Wild Card, and Fighting All Odds. Although a "boom" or "renaissance" is debatable, more series are being produced today.

2024 will see Hailey's On It! season one conclude, premiere of indie-ish Hazbin Hotel, and two Cartoon Network series: Invincible Fight Girl and Iyanu: Child of Wonder. The Ghost and Molly McGee season 2 will end. Velma season 2 will be released. Star Wars: The Bad Batch will end, as will Invincible season two. Primos will air, as will Stugo, X-Man 97, Creature Commandos, and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Possibly, Arcane season 2 will premiere, as will Ark: The Animated Series, Asterix, and Iwájú. 2024 portends to be a good year for animation no matter what, even if The Animation Guild strikes.

Mugshot Monday - "Parkview Drip Grind Coffee" mug by Westwood Yesteryear with Morning Glory Cold Brew by Peace Coffee

I don't remember the pollen being this gnarly on a Memorial Day weekend in Minneapolis. I'm a mess. Watery eyes, snot-faucet, the whole experience.

We had literal clouds of pollen wafting through our alley all day!

I really shouldn't complain at all because the weather was absolutely fantastic this weekend. It was just beautiful.

I took this mugshot around 10am *before* we started with the yardwork we've been intentionally putting off during no-mow-may. I knew my allergies were going to kick in, and I was right. (There is no *after* shot, sorry.)

This Parkview Coffee mug is another one of my Westwood Yesteryear faux coffee brand mugs sold in the 90s. I love the illustrations and I love that type treatment. Such a cool cup.

Today we remember the veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting for our country. Raise a mug if you have one.

With fur, I can understand-

But the skin color, in a universe where the color brown still exists?! Even in Heaven, a world where the angels are meant to look more “alien” she made them much more humanoid instead, and specifically, the black women were drawn as a light grey. How could I, a black person, not read this as colorist?! Even if done racist unintentionally, that doesn’t excuse the outcome!

Especially a bunch of harmful outcomes, that the creator refuses to fix because she’s more focused on mainstream appeal, and toxic “positivity” and “perfection” than to do anything about any of the problems with either of her shows. It’s so frustrating, because there’s so many decent indie shows and shorts that are amazing, but don’t get picked up- or any love from critics because they’re not “memeable” or “trendy” enough.

I like Hazbin, but I understand that there’s better indie media out there that deserve more attention and love than that of Hazbin Hotel or Helluva Boss, not just morally-

But quality wise.

So for that- time for some pros and cons! :D

If they can have brown in Hell (like the tree)- Why are all the non white characters grey washed or not colored as brown besides only one character that wasnt drawn by Vivziepop?

EDIT: Turns out, Milky and Coco, the character named after the fact that she's a black character (wow progressive...) arent even brown, and Milky, the darkest one, is shown as a ligther red (basically whitewashed) in her "demon" form. Bro...wtf?

What's with all the "grey"washing? Why make most of them grey, a light grey, if brown is something that exists in that world? It just makes the series come off as unintentionally colorist with how they refuse to have any curly hair, brown skin, or anything that non-white people tend to have commonly despite these characters clearly being meant to be the "most" humanoid in the story. Charlie and Cherri Bomb literlly being white- not even peach, white!

Why? What's the point if grey and peach are colors that have the ability to exist in this universe? Why make most "poc" characters in the series such a extremeley light color outside of just maybe Velvet and some background characters. It's just feels wrong, honestly.

2. Too much red, oh my god there's almost no other colors.

I get it Viv, you like red. Hell, Hell isnt even red!

Fire, by definition, is a orange color! Fire is orange, not red! 😂

So the "dynamic" or reference doesnt even make sense and just feels like a cheap excuse to have almost everything the same color. Is a bit more of a pallete really "too much" work for this show outside of well... slapping it together randomly?

3. Not even a con... but A24's radio silence is still happening.

Been waiting for this for yeaaaaaars you have no idea! Well- you do, because you all have been waiting too. So good for you guys too! :D

2. Charlie (outside of the overuse of a certain color) definitely has a nicer design. Great change from the "eh" hair she had before.
