Ferrari unveiled the '296 Challenge' at the Finali Mondiali race at Mugello Circuit. The car is scheduled to debut in the Ferrari Challenge in the 2024 season and is the ninth model in the history of the single-make championship hosted by Ferrari. The Ferrari Challenge is currently in its 32nd season.
As riders around the world became more skilled and competitive, the 296 Challenge attempted to make bigger changes than the original model. The 296 Challenge continues Ferrari's long tradition of developing cars for gentleman drivers, but draws on the expertise accumulated in the '296 GT3' more than any other model. The 296 Challenge is a vehicle for drivers who are passionate about future GT racing. During the development of the 296 Challenge we made significant changes, not just minor changes to the model of the production car, but to make it a vehicle optimized for track driving. An extreme form of the vehicle was developed that improves overall performance while maintaining consistency and repeatability for testing and competition.
The 296 Challenge is the first car in Ferrari's single-brand range to be equipped with a V6 engine. So far, all models participating in the Challenge have been equipped with V8 engines. The biggest change compared to the 296 GTB is the elimination of the hybrid powertrain like the 296 GT3. As a result, while reducing the weight of the vehicle, the power output was increased to 700 horsepower (cv), setting a new record in this segment with an output of 234 horsepower per liter. In terms of aerodynamics, solutions derived from the 296 GT3 were taken and pushed to the extreme to achieve unprecedented downforce figures. These include the "S-shaped duct" (which draws air into the central radiator and exhausts it through the vents on the bonnet), the "swan-neck rear wing layout (another element inspired by the development of the 296 GT3)", and the A device that maximizes the stability of downforce generated in different trim conditions.
The braking system has also been completely redesigned. It's the first to feature the new "CCM-R PLUS" disc, which features technology derived from extreme track applications. New Pirelli tires developed specifically for the 296 Challenge also contributed significantly to improved performance. After its debut at the "2019 Finali Mondiali", the 296 Challenge set a record at the Mugello circuit approximately 2 seconds faster than its predecessor "488 Challenge Evo" which debuted in the 2020 season. From the early stages of development, the 296 Challenge discussed removing all hybrid components from the V6 powertrain, as in the 296 GT3. The electric motor and high-voltage battery have been eliminated, and the output of the twin-turbo V6 engine has been increased to 700 cv. This approach helps limit vehicle weight and overall unit complexity, which are fundamental factors in track driving.

First Look: The Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo
The new 488 Challenge Evo has made its debut during the Ferrari Finali Mondiali underway at the Mugello Circuit. 3 years after the presentation of the 488 Challenge during the Finali at Daytona, Ferrari has developed a kit that increases the car’s overall performance and its consistency in race conditions, and also improves the handling for even better feedback and driving pleasure.
The aim of the Evo package is to maximize the synergy between aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics - that is, the interaction between tires, balance of downforce and electronic controls. Better performance is guaranteed by higher downforce and new Pirelli tires, while driving feedback was addressed from the early stages of development using Ferrari’s GT driving simulator, revising the aero balance between the axles. To improve turn in and reduce understeer out of corners, in fact, the downforce over the front has been increased.
The aerodynamic balance 'dialogues' with the E-Diff3 and F1-TCS control systems based on the Side Slip Control (SSC), which offers new dedicated settings. The SSC concept, which is based on the estimation of the yaw angle, has been modified in view of the new levels of performance. This has made it possible to provide the control systems with a common language designed to maximize agility in cornering and traction on exit.
The proven collaboration between the technical department and the Ferrari Styling Centre resulted in a comprehensive redesign of the front of the car to ensure an increase of 30% in aerodynamic efficiency compared to the 488 Challenge. The length of the front overhang has been altered to boost overall downforce and optimize the balance. The profiles of the radiator grille intakes have been lengthened and, at the center of the bumper, a U-shaped intake feeds the front brakes and underlines the 488 Challenge Evo's sporty character. In the lower part of the bumper, a large splitter with turning vanes at the ends improves the control and direction of the airflow from the side vents. The sides of the bumper have been re-proportioned by reducing the surface volume to allow the adoption of a second side flick, improving the quality of the airflow. The car thus has 50% more overall downforce than the current 488 Challenge.
On the flank, below the rear-view mirror, there’s a new small wing with endplate designed to divert air flow towards the intercooler. The rear, on the other hand, includes clear references to the FXX-K. The sides of the bumper feature an extremely aerodynamic surface with two vents to extract the flows generated inside the wheelarches. Below the rear spoiler, a new air vent set in the engine air outlet grille increases downforce. There is also a new nolder on the rear wing that produces an increase in the coefficient of downforce.
The 488 Challenge Evo introduces a first for the Prancing Horse's one-make series: the option to modify the front downforce independently of the rear, so that the driver can set up the balance without having to change the ride height. The driver can select different configurations ranging from high downforce to low downforce before each race, depending on the circuit's characteristics and the weather conditions. These developments ensure an increase of more than 20 percentage points in the downforce over the front axle compared to the 488 Challenge.
The braking system includes a number of innovations that maintain its performance over a race. In particular, there is a significant reduction in brake wear thanks to the adoption of a new front disc design and larger rear discs.
New Pirelli tires - 275/675-19 (front) and 315/705-19 (rear) – have also been introduced. During nigh-on seven months of development, the new tire was tested not only in the laboratory but also on the new car at various European circuits, including Vallelunga, Mugello, Le Castellet and Silverstone. As well as seeking to boost overall performance, these tires also ensure greater consistency in lap times during a long run session.
The interior, with its decidedly racing character, features a conceptually different kind of steering wheel, developed from the experience gained with the FXX-K Evo and the 488 GTE, which triumphed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. The steering wheel, with integrated paddle shift, significantly improves ergonomics so the driver can always keep their hands in an ideal position, bringing advantages in terms of visibility and control of the car’s systems. There is a new ABS management strategy incorporated in the manettino. The driver can select four different modes, two dry and two wet, which implement a strategy focused on performance or stability.
A new rear camera derived from the 488 GTE has been introduced in response to feedback from the participants in the championship's various series (Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, along with last year's addition of a new UK national series). This considerably improves rear visibility.
The new components and improvements introduced with the 488 Challenge Evo are also available as upgrade kits for existing cars.

Alsace – Village
Alsace – Village II
Autodrome Lago Maggiore – GP
Autodrome Lago Maggiore – GP II
Autódromo De Interlagos

Willow Springs International Raceway: Big Willow
Willow Springs International Raceway: Horse Thief Mile
Willow Springs International Raceway: Horse Thief Mile II
Willow Springs International Raceway: Streets of Willow Springs
Willow Springs International Raceway: Streets of Willow Springs II
Brands Hatch
Circuit of the Americas
Daytona International Speedway
Dubai Circuit
Homestead-Miami Speedway
Maple Valley Raceway
Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello
Nürburgring
Rio de Janeiro
Sebring International Raceway
Silverstone Racing Circuit
Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps
Suzuka Circuit
Virginia International Raceway
Yas Marina Circuit
Bernese Alps
Mount Panorama Circuit
Circuit de Catalunya
Hockenheim-Ring
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Sonoma Raceway
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
Circuit de la Sarthe – Le Mans
Lime Rock
Long Beach
Autodromo Nazionale Monza
Test Track Airfield
Prague
Road America
Road Atlanta
Top Gear
Watkins Glen

Mugello Circuit
Mugello is one of Italy's classic circuits, tucked away in the rolling hills of the Tuscany region and beloved of the motorcycle racing brigade. Each year thousands pack into the grandstands to worship the MotoGP riders, in particular home hero Valentino Rossi, whose fans turn the hillsides yellow in deference to their hero.
Mugello Circuit is located near to the town of Borgo San Lorenzo in Tuscany, Italy. The nearest international airport is at Florence, approximately 30km to the south, while Forli and Bologna are around 100kms away.
Despite its classic course feel, Mugello is a relatively modern affair and actually the second circuit to bear this name. The original was a course along public roads, winding along 38 miles of Tuscan countryside. This saw action from 1914 through to 1970. Names such Giuseppe Campari, Enzo Ferrari and local idol Emilio Materassi were among the luminaries who raced the old Circuito del Mugello, which went from Scarperia uphill to Firenzuola, then through the Futa Pass and downhill to San Piero and Scarperia.
The advent of Mille Miglia dimmed Mugello's importance, but in the mid 1960s with the end of the round-Italy race, competitions on the Mugello roads resumed their position of significance once more. The Mugello GP was revived in 1955 and from the 1964 to 1969 as a Targa Florio-like road race consisting of eight laps of 66.2 km each. Road were closed for racing and qualifying, but during practice – incredibly – they remained open to the public.
The folly of this approach was exposed in 1970, when a seven month-old baby was killed when local racer Spartaco Dini crashed his Alfa Romeo GTA into a group of people at the village of Firenzuola during a private test. Four other people, including 2 young children, were seriously injured and that year's event proved the last. Authorities had already begun looking for a site for a permanent closed course and the tragedy only served to accelerate these plans.
Land at Barberino di Mugello was identified as being most suitable, nestling as it did in a valley to create natural sweeps and elevation changes. Several layouts were considered, before the final version was approved and construction began in 1973.
The new Mugello opened in June 1974 with a round of the F5000 series and was immediately popular with competitors. A long, sweeping main straight spilled into a rising right-hander, before rising and falling through the hillsides behind the pits through a series of fast corners. The World Sportscar Championship made several visits during the 1970s, while the original Formula Two series made it a mainstay of its schedule from the outset. The circuit was also very quickly adopted by the Motorcycle World Championships.
By the mid 1980s, however, Mugello was in financial trouble and there was much uncertainty as to the circuit's future. Persistent rumours abounded that the valley would be flooded to create a reservoir to supply nearby Firenze. However, in 1988, the circuit was purchased by Ferrari who intended to use it as an additional testing facility for its Formula One cars.
Extensive renovations were carried out in time for the 1991 season, including the construction of new pit and paddock facilties, the removal of Armco barrier in favour of concrete walls and the enlargement of many run-off and gravel areas. The rarely used short course was removed at this point, becoming instead an alternative shortcut lane towards the pits. Mugello had never looked better and the changes ensured the return of the Motorcycle World Championships and the debut of the World Superbikes.
On four wheels, the circuit has hosted the FIA GT championships, Formula 3000 and the short-lived International Touring Car Championship. In 2012, it also held an official Formula One test session. Today it hosts rounds of the Italian national GT and touring car championships, as well as the Ferrari Challenge Europe.

First Look: The Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo 2020
The new version of the 488 GT3, which will compete in the main international GT championships in 2020, has just been unveiled at the Ferrari Finali Mondiali at Mugello. The new Evo package is the result of Ferrari’s desire to further refine certain aspects of one of the most successful cars in the marque’s history. This has been achieved using innovative concepts derived from its track experience and feedback from the teams competing with the 488 GT3.
Aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, ergonomics, safety and reliability were the main focuses of development, all, of course, in compliance with the strict power and aerodynamic efficiency performance limits imposed by FIA regulations.
The engineers honed the 488 GT3 Evo 2020's aerodynamics to boost the car's stability with the new front-end design making a significant contribution. Over 18,000 hours of calculations and CFD simulations, followed by wind tunnel testing, went into the design of a new bumper with a smaller frontal section under the headlights. This has allowed the introduction of a pair of flicks to generate more downforce, making the car more stable without modifying the aero balance thanks in part to turning vanes inside the splitter. Aerodynamic development also extended to other areas of the front of the 488 GT3: the vents on top the wings are larger than the current model and the front section of the door is now more tapered to more efficiently channel lateral flows. The vents on the rear wing have also been completely redesigned.
The 488 GT3’s vehicle dynamics have been key in its success, and this area has been further improved in the new 488 GT3 Evo 2020. The wheelbase is longer, as in the 488 GTE, to optimize tire use, reduce tire wear and facilitate the conversion from GT3 to GTE. The engineers also focused on reducing the car's weight with the result that more ballast can be used to attain the minimum weight imposed by the Balance of Performance, thus lowering the center of gravity. In addition all the vehicle dynamic controls, including the traction control and ABS, have been optimized.
No performance upgrades have been made to the engine, a twin-turbo V8 with a 90-degree angle between the cylinder banks, nor have any components been modified. However, it does benefit from a new engine management system which improves reliability and guarantees smoother, more precise torque delivery.
Endurance racing has evolved to the extent that it is increasingly resembling extended sprint racing. This demands meticulous attention to detail, including in the cockpit. The 488 GT3 Evo 2020 debuts a new seat which meets the new FIA safety regulations. Developed jointly with Sabelt for both the GT3 and GTE, it is not only more rigid and robust but is also 2.4 kg lighter with new belts and a new buckle.
The additional 24H/Endurance package is specifically designed for clients interested in that particular type of racing. The basic equipment includes a front bumper with additional headlights, quick-fill couplings for engine oil and coolant, carbon-fiber clutch, brake calipers adopted from the GTE and steel wheel nuts. Optional features include sensors for the coolant level and refuelling completion with warning lights, and Le Mans-type, 4,500 lumen LED main headlights.
The new components and improvements introduced in the 2020 version of the 488 GT3 Evo are also available as upgrade kits for existing cars.
