Cool Your Jets- Ch. 8: Goodbye (Riff x newcomer)
After Maria leaves I go to take a hot shower in an attempt to wash away the anxiety gushing through me. But it’s no use- all I can think about are the mere minutes ticking down to the rumble. Not only do I think about poor Maria and Tony’s hidden relationship, but also about the fact that the next time I see Riff might be in a morgue.
But why do you care? All he’s ever done for you is attract trouble.
Well… I can’t deny that he himself is attractive, but he did get me involved with the cops.
Exactly. All you wanted was to make a steady living in the city. Just forget about the Jets.
Yeah I probably should… But then I’d feel bad for abandoning those poor boys. Sure a few of them aren’t the nicest, but they’ve grown on me. Mouthpiece, Baby John… Not only that, but they’re Tony’s friends too.
When I’m done arguing with myself I finish cleaning up and sit down to look out the window. There’s a bright moon out, and I keep my ears alert for any police sirens.
“Oh,” I groan anxiously. I can’t just sit here while there’s a rumble! I gotta do something!
Quickly, I grab my jacket and hurry down the stairs. I notice Anita coming back with a bouquet of flowers.
“Buenas noches, Marilyn! I’m just about to get ready for my date with Bernardo!”
I try to give a convincing smile. “That sounds lovely, Anita! Please give him my regards.”
I turn to leave and hear Anita call from behind: “Be careful, mi querida! There’s trouble lurking everywhere in this city!”
“More than you know,” I mudda under my breath. I walk a short way to the edge of the Puerto Rican neighborhood, and it’s at that point I realize that I’ve got no clue where to look for the Jets.
“Marilyn? Is that you?” A voice asks from an alley.
Turning around I see Tony step into the light. “Tony, thank God! Where are the Jets? Where’s Riff? I gotta talk to them-!”
“Hey, hey,” Tony holds up his hands. “Don’t worry, I’m going to the rumble to try and talk it down. You don’t need to get involved with any more gang stuff.”
“But Tony-!”
“No,” Tony says firmly. “I ain’t lead’n a goil to a rumble. That’d be just plain terrible of a fella to do. So just go back to your apartment ad wait with Maria when she gets done with work, ok?”
Before I can argue anymore, Tony struts off down the street. I grunt and put my hands on my hips. Well this is one goil who’s gonna get involved no madda how indecent it is! And with that I stealthily follow Tony into the inky night of the West Side.
After about ten minutes-a following him, Tony leads me to a back alley hidden next to Doc’s. Any passerby wouldn’t see it ‘cause-a the boxes blocking it, but after Tony slips through I enter to find Riff and the odda Jets sit’n on some wire table and chairs and chat’n about the rumble. When Baby John notices me his eyes go wide, and he tugs on Mouthpiece’s sleeve to get him to see me.
Now Riff’s seen me too, and he gives me a crooked grin. “Lynnie? Whaddya do’n here? I appreciate the thought but it’s dangerous for a doll like yourself to be out this late.”
I briskly walk past the odda Jets, some of whom give me a few catcalls and whistles despite Riff’s warning glare.
“I need to talk to you Riff. Please.” I look noivously at the awaiting audience. “Alone.”
The odda Jets all laugh and joke around at my pathetic suggestion until Riff holds up a hand to silence them. He steps down, takes my hand, and leads me back into the street. When we’s alone Riff gently grips my shoulders and looks straight at me, all joking gone from his eyes.
“What is it, Lynnie?”
“Riff, please I am begging you- call off the rumble!” I plead as I shake my head. “To you it’s important territory, but believe me noth’n good can come outta this fight!”
Riff just gives me a questioning look. “You’ll never get it, Marilyn. All of us guys here only gots each odda, so we gotta stand up for what we got before we’re left with noth’n but the clothes on our backs. And you’s never been a Jet before, so don’t go tell’n us what to do if you ain’t involved.”
My jaw drops and I glare at his arrogant face. “Don’t you tell me I ain’t been involved with your little gang, Lorton!”
Riff scoffs. “Oh please, you’s such a good-two-shoes! What have you possibly done-?”
“I got arrested ‘cause-a you! Don’t you tell me that I ain’t involved, Lorton!”
Riff seems taken aback, but regains his posture. “Arrested, huh? Good ol’ Krupke had ya down at the station?”
“Yes,” I seethe. “And it was all because they wanted to ask if I knew anyth’n about the rumble. However, some-a your pals busted me out before they could ask anyth’n.”
Riff’s eyes flash. “Would you have said anyth’n?”
I frown and shake my head helplessly. “No. No I wouldn't've Riff. Because- because I just can’t stand to think-a you and all them young Jets locked up in a cage! And you know what… it’s that kind of thinking that has me torn between do’n what’s right, and do’n what’s wrong.” I push away from him and walk back towards my apartment. “I can’t change your mind, Riff. I know that. But I can’t watch you kill each odda and tear people who care ‘bout you from your life. I- I’m leave’n.”
Riff’s entire face changes to an expression of fear and bewilderment, then he tries to mask it again. “W- What? You’re leave’n?”
I nod. “I have enough saved to buy a train ticket to Chicago, and I’ll just work my way west from there. If this is what city life’s all about, then I don’t want any part of it!”
Riff’s jaw drops. “So that’s it? You’re just gonna leave the Jets?”
“The Jets got along just fine without me yesterday, they can carry on without me! Jesus, you’ve only known me for one day!” I yell as tears start to cloud my vision.
His face hardens. “Well- fine, then! Just when the Jets need ya the most- when I need you the most, you just walk out! Typical dame-”
“Excuse me?!” I put my hands on my hips. “This dame is try’n to keep the Jets ‘nd Sharks from kill’n themselves! But I guess I ain’t wanted here either!” I stomp my foot and march away, determined not to look back and let my feel’ns tear me apart.
It’s your fault, Riff. Not mine.
(Will You Remember Me from Nice Work If You Can Get It)
“When I go my way,
Along some highway,
Will you remember me?
When you are lonesome,
I'd like to own some
Place in your memory.
I know that you'll play a part
In my heart when I start;
That's something I can guarantee.
But when I stray off,
Somewhere away off --
Will you remember me?”
I hear Riff following me, but I ignore him, even when he sings back.
“Now that I am starting,
I cannot deny,
I'd prefer a 'see you later'
To a mere goodbye.
But before departing
Do I hope in vain?
Something makes me wonder whether
You'll forget me altogether
If we never meet again.
When you go your way
Out through my doorway
Will you remember me?”
I turn my head away as teas start to fall.
“When you're alone,
I'd like to own some
Place in your memory.”
By now we’ve reached my apartment, and I don’t even turn around to give Riff a proper goodbye as I go up the stairs.
“I know that you'll play a part
In my heart when I start;
That's something I can guarantee.
But when I stray off,
Somewhere away off --
Will you remember me?”
My heart gets the best of me and I turn back against my better judgment to see Riff stand’n at the bottom of the stairs. He blows me an air kiss, and I can’t quite tell but I can almost see unfallen tears in Riff’s eyes too.
“Will you remember me?” We both sing as he mournfully walks down the street, potentially towards his impending death.
I march straight to my apartment and slam the door shut, all but collapsing onto my bed and shrieking into the tattered blanket. Why? Why did I have to fall for the one person who’s too proud and stubborn to admit when he’s wrong?! A week ago I’dve barely batted an eyelash at any smug gang member. Jesus Riff, what have you done to me?
I hear a knock at the door.
Fuming, I stomp over and bark: “Riff, unless you’re here to tell me that you’re gonna call off the rumble then stay out!” I pound against the door.
Behind it I hear a faint noise. “Uh, it’s me. Mouthpiece.”
I give an annoyed groan and stiffly open the door to find the blonde Jet bouncing on his heels.
“May I come in?”
My eyes narrow. “For a brief visit. Then I’m outta here.”
Mouthpiece strolls in, hands behind his back. He notices my suitcase and nods. “So, you’s really leaving? After one day?”
I snort. “Why do you care?”
Mouthpiece shrugs. “‘S just… seems like you’s just run’n away from your problems.”
I give a dark chuckle and shake my head. “Mouth, my friend, if there’s one thing I’ve taken outta life is that I couldn’t care less what people think-a me. There ain’t one person who would notice if I died in the dirt tomorrow, so I just live everyday how I wanna.”
Mouthpiece just stares with his jaw down. “Marilyn, how could ya think that? Shouldn’t you care-?”
“Why? Why should I care?! Everyone that’s ever actually wanted me around because they liked me is dead! I can take a beating, but don’t waste my time! Don’t lie straight at my face and expect me to act like I don’t care! The only time somebody ever wants me around is ‘cause I’m smart and reliable! You’ve got the Jets, Mouthpiece. If you were 10 minutes late they'd be search’n for ya, but if I go miss’n people just shrug and walk away! You’ve got a family, a home! All I’ve got is a will to live, which can falter from time to time.”
“Marilyn, don’t say that! There’s so many people who care ‘bout you-!”
“No, no!” I hold up a hand. “Just shut up, Mouthpiece! Don’t you talk to me about luv! My parents are dead, and they’s the only people to ever luv me!” I start to tear up. “I- I know I shouldn’t be jealous, but when I see happy couples like Anita and Bernardo I just get so… sad! I don’t ask for much in life, but is it too much to ask for one friend who will listen? One person who will wanna see me ‘cause they like me, not ‘cause they expect me to show up?”
Mouthpiece goes to speak, but I cut him off again.
“Don’t. Don’t do it, Mouthpiece! Don’t lie to me and give me hope and tell me ‘it’ll get bedda!’ ‘Cause it never does! You’d think I’dve learned by now, but I still dare to hope! Well, hope is dead for me now! Every time my life starts to look up again, it gets fucked up! Every time someone seems like they care they just leave for no reason! They don’t say why, they just leave! They couldn’t even have the decency to give context as to why I wasn’t worth their time!” I wipe my eyes and then laugh. “And- and then I’ll hear ‘bout people complain’n that nobody ever talks to them, that people only stick around just to say they’re your friend. Well, guess what? That’s me! The very people who complain ‘bout that are the very same people who just walk away! They’re their own enemies, and they just leave people like me to die alone, who’re too nice to shout in their face! I know you Jets are just gonna give me a smile, say ‘hi,’ and then walk away just like everyone else.” I seethe as tears stain my face.
Mouthpiece seems to consider arguing, but gives a heavy sigh in defeat. “Ok, Marilyn. I’ll help ya pack your bags.” He rubs his neck nervously. “But I gotta say… I’m gonna miss ya.”
“Aw!” I grin and wrap Mouthpiece up in a tight hug. “I’ll miss all you guys! Just promise you’ll try to stay outta trouble?”
“No promises, sweetheart!” Mouth chuckles. “But seriously- I don’t say this much, but you’s really made a different ‘round here. Ever since you’s been here Riff’s been act’n all decent-like, want’n us to be gentlemen ‘nd all that.”
I give the gushing Jet a warm smile. “That’s real sweet, Mouthpiece. I just wish everyone else felt the same way. Just help me pack and get to the train station without me get’n into a sobbing meltdown and I’ll buy you a soda before I leave.”
Mouth sniffles and smiles back. “Don’t go talk’n all like that ‘cause I’ll break down too! Jesus, how Riff can stand to let a caring, pretty thing like you leave is beyond me. Now let’s get you packed.”

The Heat of Trinidad (2)
A/N: IT IS M’BAKU SATURDAY. In this chapter, M’Baku finds Rae and they spend a little time together..kinda. ENJOY.
WARNING: none. Just long as heck. Sawwy.
SONG RECOMMENDATION: Good Morning by Peter Ram
" ‘How can I see you, again? I mean when can I see you again?’ She turned to him with a straight face and said “don’t worry. Ye will find me, only if it’s meant to be.” She walked over to her driver’s side, honked her horn once and drove off. He looked over to the painting to see she had painted a woman with her hands out to her hands out and eyes to the sky. He wondered how can she be this extraordinary then said to himself “I need to see her again.’ ”
M’Baku was up early in the morning and the first thought he had was “I have to have her. Why did she not throw herself at me like the other women back home have?” N’Jabu sat across from him at the table, sipping coffee and reading the paper as they had breakfast. “Who is she sir”, he asked and M’Baku looked at him. “Who are you talking about, son”, the Lord asked and the agent said “the one you ‘have’ to see.”
“Can you read my mind?”
“No, sir. You have been talking aloud this whole time”, N’Jabu said as he got up to wash his breakfast dishes. “If you must know, her name is Raelyn. She is the most beautiful woman I have saw.” N’Jabu walked back over to the table to see M’Baku’s plate was completely full. N’Jabu went to place his hand on M’Baku’s head but he barked and the young man jumped back. M’Baku stood from the table, heading to his room and yelled over his shoulder “GO GET READY”.
M’Baku wore a chocolate toned suit, white dress shirt with his chain and the shoes transformed into matching dress shoes. N’Jabu wore his uniform and they were off to the station. As they were on their way, M’Baku saw Aura and thought about her again.
Two Hours Later
“In conclusion, we should enforce a safer environment by finding evidence then take action. Thank you”,
N’Jabu said and the whole office clapped. M’Baku stood against a wall looking at them all, completely unamused. N’Jabu came up to him and said “Lord M’Baku, I will stay here with the others to train them. Will you join us?” M’Baku shook his head and said “this is your thing. You did well but I have a private engagement to tend to.” With that, he said his goodbyes and walked out. He went back to the car as his driver stood by. “Where to, Lord M’Baku”, the older man asked and that gave M’Baku an idea.
On their way there, M’Baku took off his jacket and rolled up sleeves, opening the first three buttons of his shirt. When they parked, the building was in the shape of a dome. There was a wide garden of different type of flowers to his right as he walked to the door. He stood at the receptionist desk and dark skin woman with wavy hair sitting there. She looked up with wide eyes and her mouth gaped open. “W-welcome t-to the T&T Y-outh Centuh, Lord M’Baku it is a pleasure to meet you.”
“Yes, yes. Thank you, miss. I am looking for the art program.” She helped him down the hall and when they got to the door, he looked through the small window; he saw here. She wore a white tee, loose-fitting but still hugged her breasts. She paired with a pair of high waist jeans and the same shoes she wore the other day. Her hair was in a high bun with a few loose strands. “Now, it always helps to stand away from de painting and see what we can add. Ye can never be too careful. Now, let’s add a mountain or two here and let it dry. Ok, class. Now, remember. Neva doubt yeself. I’ll see ye all Monday.” All the kids ran out instead of Mandy. Mandy walked up to Rae and pulled her on the hem of her shirt.
“Are you okay, Mandy?” Mandy looked up to her and held up her painting. “I don’t tink I did it like yours.” Rae looked at hers then at Mandy’s. “You are right, Mandy. Yours is better.” Mandy smiled at her and blushed. “Never compare ye self to anyone else, okay? We are all different in our own way.” Mandy nodded and gave her a hug. Rae watched her walk out when she noticed M’Baku walking in. “Well, well, well. Looks like the great gorilla found me. What do I owe the pleasure of ye visit, me lawd?” He smiled with a tilt of her head before saying “well, my driver was giving me a tour around after my meeting and thought I would come by and pay a visit.”
“Oh, how nice. Well, have a nice day”, Rae said as she cleaned up. “I don’t hear any feet moving”, Rae said but when she turned M’Baku stood right behind her. Even though she was a very statuesque woman, she had to admit it was nice to stand in front of someone that she can look up to. “Ye stand awfully close to people, don't ye?” M’Baku looked into her eyes and said: “maybe so.” She turned back to the art supplies and finished cleaning. “Well, it was nice to see ya but I have to get going.” She grabbed her book bag and began walking, so did he. When she began walking, he could not help but stare. “Would you like a ride? My driver is still here.”
“Me fine. I’m just walking a few blocks.” He sped walk and stood in front of her. “Well, lemme walk you. A woman as beautiful as you should not be walking alone.” She gave a sarcastic grin and said: “I tink I can manage, Lord M’Baku.” She walked past him but he still followed as the car did the same. “Miss Rae, please get in the car.”
“Me mudda always said neva get in cars with men I have neva met.”
“You can trust me though.”
“Too late. I’m already here.”
The house had a peach undertone and a red shingle roof with a nicely trimmed lawn. There was a young dark skin man with his shirt off trimming at the bushes. He looked up to see the pair walking towards them and said “Ey, Rae. Why de big fella followin’ ye?” Rae stepped up to the lawn and folded her arms. “He followed me on his own.” M’Baku nodded to the young man and said: “I am Lord M’Baku.” All of a sudden, the man dropped the clippers. “Lord M’Baku? Of Wakanda?”
“Yes, young man.” The man walked past Rae and held his hand out. “Ya are really the Lord Of Wakanda?”
“Miles, get away from him”, Rae said to her little brother but he was still in front of the Lord. “Hush, Rae. I’m meeting me hero. Lord M’Baku, I look up to you.” All of a sudden, an older woman in a sunflower momo came to the porch. She had salt and pepper hair and wrinkles covering her dark skin. Rae looked up to her and saw her. “Ello, mudda. Sorry, I’m late.” Her mother sucked her teeth and said “My Rae of Sunshine. You are fine, me chile.” She walked down the steps to get a closer look and kissed her daughter’s cheek before she looked to the younger man who stood before them.
“Well, well. Who is this handsome young man”, she said waking up to him and her son. “Ello, what is your name?” He stood proud and said “Lord M’Bakau”, he held out his hand and she shook. “Ah, I see you on my TV. It’s nice to meet you. Rae, did you invite Mr. M’Baku to dinner?” Rae looked up to him with his cheesy smirk and rolled her eyes. “I guess. But he may be a very busy man. He might have plans-”
“I am actually free. I would love to join your family, Miss-”
“Miss Edwards”, Miss Edwards said and smiled. “You may come in. Miles, bwoy. Come and help ye mudda wit the table.” Miles bowed to M’Baku before walking behind his mother. Rae folded her arms and he approached her. “What are you trying to do”, she asked and he said, “well, it was meant to be I guess.” He held his hand out so she can lead the way. Once they walked in, a small brown cat caressed against her leg; she picked up the cat and massaged her scalp. “Hello, Cookie.”
“Raelyn, give him a tour, honey”, her mother said from the kitchen. “Yes, mudda”, the tour started. First, was the living room. Very nude tones filled the room and something caught his attention. There were frames of pictures on the mantle. He stepped closer to see one of Rae. She was probably in high school, face was chunky but her smile was so bright. He hoped to make her smile like that one day. Another was her way younger, maybe five. Her afro was in two puffs and she had a focus face with her tongue sticking out; she was painting.
Next was the Miles room, navy blue walls and typical guy stuff then it was her room. She walked in first and it surprised the Great Gorilla. Her room was like his back home with slight changes. Her bed was a queen-sized with a plush comforter and tons of pillows against the wooden headboard. The walls were a dark cream shade and a vase rested on a table. Rae sat on her bed, slipping out of her shoes and watched as he walked around. “You like dandelions”, he asked and she nodded. “Yes, if you must know, my fadda used to plant them all the time while I was younger.” She stood and he watched her walking towards. “My mudda might be done with dinner. Wash ye hands in the bathroom.” He looked to her and she shooed him away. “Bathroom to ye left.”
Minutes later, Rae sat with her mother at the head of the table and she smiled at her without looking at her. “Yes, mudda? Why are ye staring at me, hm?” Her mother smiled as she placed her napkin in her lap. “Very handsome, man. Now I see why everyone is going to Wakanda.” Rae rolled her eyes, playing her napkin on her lap. “Well, he has plenty of women around him. Don’t know why he following me ‘round like a lost puppy.”
“He remind me of ya fadda. Strong man, handsome and a leader. He was just like M’Baku. I see something in him.”
“For who?”
“You, chile.” Rae kissed her teeth and said “I am fine. I don’t need a man and don’t want one.” Before her mother can say anything, M’Baku came out with his sleeves rolled up and drying his hands with a paper towel. Rae watched him sit at the end of the small table and scoot his chair in. “M’Baku, I hope ye don’t mind but I made a vegan dish for dinner; curried potatoes.”
“That is fine. I am actually vegetarian.” Miss Edwards looked to him them Rae with a smile. “So, are we but Rae was the first to transition to dat lifestyle.” Rae sipped her long glass of iced tea before looking towards her mother. “Miles, can you do the prayer please”, Rae asked as she held her head down. “Sure”, he took his mother’s hand and M’Baku’s. M’Baku looked between them and saw Rae’s hand on the table while the other took her mother’s. Rae had her eyes closed when she felt fingers intertwine hers. She eyed to see his big hand in hers. She looked at his face but his eyes were closed, looked so soft but fingertips were calloused. Probably from battle. She wanted to feel more but heard the prayer coming to the end and shut her eyes fast.
They began to scoop potatoes over their rice with pieces of buns passing around. “So, M’Baku. What brings ye here”, Miss Edwards asked and he looked to her before eating another bite. “Well, Wakanda is helping to plan a safer environment and to stop police brutality. We noticed a lot of our own kind are losing their lives to gun violence and we want to help stop that problem.” Rae looked over to him and still ate. Miles sat proudly and said, “I wish was from Wakanda then I can help.”
“Help like how, young man”, M’Baku asked. “Well, I wanna help the world make a better place and stop the violence. I wanna be apart of the WPS.” Miss Edwards kept eating when she said “no, Miles. It is very dangerous.” That’s when M’Bakue heard it. “Mudda, their uniforms are made of vibranium from head to toe. It repels against all danger and impact and doubles it by a hundred as it attacks the enemy. Miles will be safer than our own armies and police department.” M’baku looked to her impressed with her knowledge of the suits. “I see you have done your research.” She sipped her drink and said, “Miles, told me.”
“No, I didn’t “, Miles said but was caught off with a kick to his shin. Rae gave him a brow raised and Miss Edwards asked next “Lord M’Baku, how did ye stand single all these years?” Rae knew where this was going and she folded her hands in her lap. M’Baku cleaned his mouth with the napkin before speaking. “Well, Ma’am. I never found a woman who I can be equal to. It is very hard to find a woman as such back home.”
“Do ya think ye will find one here”, she asked and Rae looked to her right, feeling like she was in the hot seat. M’Baku looked to Rae, noticing how uncomfortable she was. “Well, ma’am. I am solely here for a mission. I do not have time to try and find love in this beautiful place. Like a beautiful woman told me before ‘only if it’s meant to be’.” Rae looked to him and a small smile came to her face. She relaxed and began eating again. M’Baku looked to Rae and asked “Rae, I was looking at one of your murals the other day and I wanted to ask how do you come up with something so fast? I mean you and I were talking and you created it so fast.”
“Well, it just happens. I paint what I see and feel. The ideas just come to me”, she explained and M’Baku nodded. “Well, you do very nice work.” She smiled as she ate and he did the same. After dinner was over, Miss Edwards asked if he would like to stay but he politely declined and said he had to get going. Rae walked him out and to his car that came back when he pressed the button on his beads. “Thank you for having me for dinner. It was nice.” Rae folded her arms and said, “yes. It was. I should apologize for my family. They talk about ye alot and they got excited seeing ye in person.” M’Baku chuckled and mentioned that he was used to it back home. They stood a while before he said “I would love to come and watch you paint during one of your sessions at the center.” Rae looked around him and nodded. “Well, the center opens back up on Monday at 8 am. Ye may come if ye like.” He bowed his head with his hand to his chest. “I will be there.”
“Okay then. But where something comfortable because we will be going out for the rest of the day. We have to start a mural soon and as tall as you are you can help.” He looked down at her and nodded. I will be there, Miss Raelyn.” He shook her hand and watched her walk to the house before getting in the back seat. Before pulling off, he noticed the dandelions and got an idea.
The next morning, Rae woke up around six am to go for a walk but decided to make a little snack first. She got up in her pajama set with her hair tied up after brushing her teeth and before she hit the kitchen, she noticed a huge bouquet yellow dandelions wrapped in green tissue paper and saw a note attached, smiling after when she read it.
“Everyone needs a little Rae of Sunshine in their life. I hope this is yours. Yours Truly, The Great Gorilla.”

Chapter Thirty Three: Back From A Trip (Spot Colon x Female Newsie)
(Warning: Slight intimacy at the end)
“Danny! Vinny! Stop your roughhous’n and clean up this mess! Tommy- no alcohol! Put that bottle down NOW! Mink, Lucky, you goils go start dinner. Binx and Ness, you go call in the oddas for chores!”
I give a desperate sigh and slump down in a chair. This can’t go on… But I can't break. Spot’s depend’n on me.
Spot’s been gone fer a week on a business trip, someth’n ‘bout a conference with folks in Chicago. Accord’n ta Spot, there’s big business there. Why Chicago newsies has anyth’n ta do with us, but I trust his judgment.
But be’n Spot’s second-in-command, AND his wife, I godda keep things tight around here.
“Becca, the meat’s ready,” Mink calls.
Ugh. Here we go.
I begin cooking, all the while giv’n order to the olda fellas com’n back from sell’n. They’s still try’n to grasp the fact that I’s in charge, but it’s caught on nicely.
Now I hear Bucky and Scabs.
“Hey Becs what’s for- whoa!” Scabs gasps at the sight-a-me: frizzy, unkempt hair in a knot smashed unda my hat, soak’n in sweat, grease, and Lord knows what else, my face red from stirr’n a pot-a soup, hold’n a carv’n knife in a not-so-friendly way.
“Hey guys,” I attempt to smile, but my eyes fail me.
“Why don’t you sit down and let us finish up?” Bucky suggests, already steer’n me away from the counter.
“No, no- I’s almost done-” I protest, but my eyelids are weigh’n down…
“Becca, you’s done plenty for us-”
“Spot would keep go’n, so I will too,” I stubbornly lift up my head and try to ignore my ach’n head.
“Yeah, he would. And he’d work himself to sleep, same as you’s do’n right now.” Scabs slings an arm unda me and guides me to the couch. “And he told us to make sure you don’t wear yourself out.”
“Sounds like him,” I mudda as my eyes start to give out. “Wake me when it’s chow time.”
But they don’t. Instead, I wake up to dark surroundings, and only a small candle next to me. I sit up, unaware of the time, and look around.
“It’s 11:30.”
I nearly punch out all-a Danny’s teeth.
“God! Don’t do that! You’s gonna get a fist to tha face!” I hiss.
Danny, sitt’n at the kitchen table, holds up his hands. “Sorry, sorry! I’s just wait’n fer you ta wake up so I’s could tell ya ta go back to sleep.”
I groan. “I said wake me up before dinner.”
“Yeah, ‘bout that… Afta you’s fell asleep we’s all thought ta let you keep sleep’n, since you’s been werk’n so hard ‘nd all. So just lay back down and go to sleep.” He pivots and struts oudda tha room, leav’n me in cold, lonely darkness.
Guess I should head upstairs.
I drag myself up, quickly rinse myself with a washcloth and put on my nightshirt. When I lay down, it’s so quiet…
I close my eyes, and lose track of time, until…
“Ugh.”
I feel a shape lay down by me.
My eyes pop open at the familiar voice, and I lift my head up to see a figure lay’n next to me.
“Spot?”
“Hey Beauty.”
“Spot!”
I can now see his smirk’n face as I wrap my arms around him and bury my face in his chest.
“I thought ya wouldn’t be back for anodda week!”
Spot wraps his own arms around me and pulls me closa, mutter’n in my ear.
“I’s supposed to, but they cut it early. Business looks good, so tha trip weren’t all a waste. Sure was tire’n though. How’d you survive here?”
I sigh. “‘Survive’ is the right woird. It’s like a demilitarized zone here! I had to break out a belt a few times just to warn the oddas ‘bout misbehav’n!”
“I’m sorry.” Spot bites at my ear and I let out a soft moan, which gets a chuckle outta him.
I feel bad for complain’n, see’n as how he’s just as tired. And if he’s so on-board with be’n intimate…
“Don’t worry ‘bout me,” I whisper as I lay him back and start rub’n his head. “Just relax.”
Spot looks at me funny, but then closes his eyes as I rub his brow. With my odda hand I gently rub his chest.
“Shoulda seen Lake Michigan… it’s so pretty…” Spot muddas. “Ran into some old friends… some good… some bad… Had to end a few fights-”
(That explains his bruised knuckles.)
“Shh.” I place a hand ova his mouth, which he kisses. I lean in and whisper: “Let me calm you, and forgetaboutit. Just relax.”
He does, and lets out a satisfied moan. His tense body melts into the bed, and his hands snake over to grip my hips, someth’n that sends pleasure all through me.
“Thank you.”
“You are eva-so welcome.”
I brush my leg against his, and his hand flies to his mouth ta keep him from moan’n.
“You don’t have to do that, Spot. Lemme hear those beautiful noises.”
Spot nods eagerly, and when I gently bite his collarbone he lets out a loud groan.
“Rebecca- you’s really got a hold on me,” he leans his head back. “How’d I get so lucky?”
“I ran inta ya, that’s how.” I chuckle. I keep a steady friction, and sometimes teasin’ly graze my fingers ova his skin and he flinches.
“Rebecca Colon, don’t you dare tease me!” Spot gives a stiff laugh and grabs my hips to flip me ova so he’s on top.
“Let’s see how you like it.” He smirks.
I grin back. “We’ll see, Spotty.”
Now Spot presses himself on me and rests his forehead on mine, interlock’n our hands togedda.
“You knows I’ll stop if you tell me,” he whispas. “Right?”
I look past his sharp blue eyes and read him to see if he’s right- and it’s when I see his eyes melt into a soft puddle that I give an approve’n nod.
“I know.”
Spot’s eyes now light up and he kisses me deeply, but then seems concerned.
“What?” I ask anxiously. “Did I do someth’n wrong?”
Spot gapes and hugs me closer to him. “God no, Rebecca. It’s just… I don’t wanna hurt you.”
At this I stifle a laugh, see’n as how much pain I’s gone through, but then Spot in an all-serious tone says: “I’s been too rough before, and I don’t wanna hurt you.”
Oh.
“Um, Spot- how many goils have ya… you know…?” This is insanely uncomfortable, but it’s important.
Spot frowns, and is hesitant to answer. “Three.”
He anxiously waits for my reaction, which is a bit surprised. I’s was expect’n a lot more, but at the same time I’s worried ‘bout expectations.
“Thanks for be’n honest. I-”
“You’s ok with it?” Spot looks just as surprised.
“Yeah- ‘course I’s is. I’s been sheltered my whole life, so I understand that I’s not really… experienced. I’s just nervous ‘bout do’n someth’n wrong-”
Spot ends my sentence by kiss’n me again.
“Rebecca, you don’t have to worry ‘bout pleas’n me. You do that every day. It’s time for a taste of yer own medicine.” He leans in and muddas in my ear. “Just relax and let me do tha woik.”
“Oh-ok.”
“Just say the word and I’ll stop,” Spot runs a hand through my hair.
I nod. “Sure thing, Spotty.”
"I’s so grateful that you’s my wife,” Spot breathes.
A part of me gets a spark of electricity and I wrap my legs around him in a big embrace that shows just how happy I am. I see Spot’s eyes widen, and a part of him looks even more happy.
“Thank you for being my husband,” I say back to his wide eyes, lean’n in to kiss his cheek.
“Guess I’s should leave town more often,” Spot blinks with a smirk.
“You do, and half the boys’ll be dead.” I threaten lightly. “I luv ‘em dearly, but they’s a handful.”
“Not as much as me,” Spot states.
“What? I luv ya too much or you’s a handful?” I ask smugly.
“Is it too much to ask for both?”
I shake my head. “For you, neva.”
Spot looks up. “You tired?”
I nod.
“Alright.” He gets up and I groan at the loss. “Just a second, I ain’t leave’n.” Spot chuckles.
He repositions himself so he’s lay’n flat-back on the bed and motions for me to come ova.
I inch ova and lay my head on his shoulda, exhale’n deeply and drift’n off to sleep…
“G’night Rebecca. I luv you more than life itself.”
I smile softly before I go under. “Welcome home, Sean.”
