So when Iâm bored and unwinding for sleep apparently I make characters. Anyway @khttrpg posted a character sheet thingie to make characters with and I figured why the heck not I can always use more OCs.
Assuming I did my math right, Riley here has 5 Major Levels, is the Replica of a scientistâs son whoâs father was very, very keen to see how far the human body could be pushed before being forced into Heartless/Nobody.....and look I based him on Prompto Argentum, taking characters from a video game or other media and building them in a TTRPG system is a really good way for me to figure out how the system works. Also he was the easiest to justify as a Cosmic Mage and I really like Cosmic Mageâs flavor.Â
All of his stats should be right if I did my math right this late at night (I added +3 to HP and +2 to MP) and there were a couple of things I noticed missing from the doc but otherwise extremely fun to build out! His whole deal would, obviously, be about finding where he belongs and figuring out where the scientist is now and maybe getting revenge for the bullshit that guy did to Rileyâs âbrothersâ.
EDIT TO ADD since tumblrâs ask limit means this is easier:Â The things I noticed missing were: several Jobs give you free spells that donât count against the number of spells you can learn but at no point in the doc does it say just how many spells you can learn aside from those; and some clarification on if a Talent can exceed a Stat if boosted by Reflex Improvement or other Class abilities.

Commission for @aciddial! I had a lot of fun writing this; hope you enjoy! Read on AO3 here.Â
Stardew Valley, and all characters therein, belongs to concernedape.
Leahâs washing her freshly picked blackberries when the birdsong falls silent. Her days are measured by the ebbing and flowing of flora, fauna, and the babbles of the river, and though itâs growing darker, the birds should still be singing. She flicks the water off her hands, drying them against her shirt as she goes to the window.
The sky is darker than it should be for an autumn evening, but rain is common as the seasons begin to change in the valley; less than the thunderstorms of summer, but still something worth celebrating. Perhaps the rain will push out a couple more mushrooms and berries before winterâs chill sets in; that, Leah can get behind.
Rough sketches, surplus canvases and paints, inventory sheets of supplies, and scattered, dulled tools, resting between miniature scale replicas of future projects cover her only table. Sheâd rather sit and eat than have to wade back into her workspace. Then again, her cabin is so small, the whole structure could be considered her workspace. She likes to think that she keeps her bed free from her work, but even then she makes exceptions to sketch her dreams from time to time, so.
Perhaps not.
She finishes cleaning the berries, setting some aside in the jars the Farmer had kindly given to her, the rest sprinkling on her evening salad. She perches on her stool, the plate held aloft in her hand as she begins her dinner. As she chews over the fall fresh berries, her mind wanders through the pathway of small cabins and creatives who live inside them, and naturally, she begins to think about Elliott.
He insists that heâs fine down in his little beachside shack, but that doesnât stop her from offering for him to stay with her every autumn and winter. There are some comforts the forest offers that the beach does not, just as there are comforts her cabin offers that Elliott does not. He treats his piano with better care than he treats himself, despite Leahâs best efforts to improve her friendâs state of living.
Sure, Willy doesnât mind allowing Elliottâs use the bait & tackle shopâs outhouse, and his electricity bill is nonexistent because thereâs simply no lights in the shack. But when Leah points out that maybe those things arenât exactly good, Elliott refuses to see reason. Itâs a point of independence and pride, she knows; they both were running away from naysayers when they each came to Pelican Town.
She still feels that relief whenever she sees him walk into the saloon, that balm of finding another artistic spirit in a place of salt-of-the-earth folk. Of course, there are dreamers elsewhere, but aside from Sebastian and Abigailâs infrequent character art commissions, Elliott is the only person with whom she can talk about her craft.
And right now, sheâs in her cozy woodland cabin, eating a foraged salad by the fire, and heâs probably freezing his ass off in his drafty shack. Sheâs talked with Harvey; she knows Elliott goes to the clinic more often than not in the colder months, and beer doesnât keep a cold away like mead, according to Willy.
She presses a blackberry to the roof of her mouth with her tongue, feeling it slowly crack apart and turn to sweet, seedy mush. Tomorrow, she resolves; tomorrow sheâll talk to him and make him seriously consider moving in for this winter. Even the community center is well under way; perhaps he could temporarily move in there, and take advantage of a proper fireplace instead of a firepit.
Leah clears her plate to the sink, already planning where she could unroll her extra cot if need be. If she did the work ahead of time, maybe Elliott would take advantage of what she was offering. Maybe, just maybe, she could make him dinner, bring him up to the cottage and have him coincidentally stay while the storm rages on.
Yeah; thatâll be what she does.
â˘â˘â˘
She wakes up to a loud cracking sound outside her cabin, and the sound of something large crashing to the ground. Then, the white noise rushing in her ears registers as rain, the ominous rumble of thunder coming from somewhere to the north. Her cabin is dark, save for the firelight, but even that has dwindled down.
Leah swings herself out of bed, first tending to the fire to coax it back up to full brightness, feeding more logs into the heat. As the cabin glows warmer and brighter, she turns to look around. Nothing seems out of place inside, so she goes to the window, pressing her nose to the glass and looking into the darkness.
Two pine trees closer to the river bank have been struck by lightning, split down the middle, still slightly steaming in the rain. She knows sheâs lucky they hadnât caught fire; the forest could have gone up in flames and she could have been stuck in her very flammable, very toxic-if-lit-ablaze cabin full of art supplies and paint. Still, those werenât small trees, and while she mourns the loss of two of the older companions sheâd had since moving to Pelican Town, she also recognizes the severity of the storm. To be able to strike down such trees, old and strong as they were, required no shortage of lightning and chance.
Again, her thoughts drift to Elliott, in his own drafty, cold cabin, surrounded by much flimsier palm trees. If one of them was struck, the tree could easily fall onto his cabin â or worse, fall onto Elliott himself.
She grabs her galoshes and stuffs her braid into a knit hat, dressing quickly. She doesnât know what time it is, but if the storm woke her up, then it mustâve woken Elliott. Heâs a light sleeper, always has been, and she mentally kicks herself for not heading to the Saloon the night prior, not being able to check in with him.
Before she leaves, she pulls out two thick knit sweaters and sweatpants, as warm and neutral as she can. Much of her and Elliottâs personal taste in fashion overlaps, a fact sheâs grateful for, but he can be particular regarding loungewear. Better to be safe than sorry.
Armed with a flashlight and a long waterproof jacket, Leah heads out into the storm. Marnieâs cows are all boarded up in the barn, and the path to town is clear of any debris, though Leahâs footsteps squelch deep into the mud. She moves quickly, running parallel to Willow Lane, skirting between the fence line of the sewer entrance and the trees. The river swells with rain water, and she slips a couple times but never completely falls.
The street lamps at the entrance to the beach have halos around them, the light smeared across the buckets of rain pouring down. She jogs into the soaked sand, and from there on every step becomes twice as difficult. Sheâs has to be particular with how she moves, taking it one step at a time, fighting towards the door of Elliottâs cabin.
His windows are dark, and she feels horrible for letting him continually choose this version of his independence. The stone pathway does little to give her reprieve from the muddy sand, but it gives her just enough to get to the doorway and knock. A loud crack of thunder sounds from over the ocean, the sky briefly bathing her in white light.
She knocks loudly, even as she opens the door, announcing herself. âElliott! Itâs Leah!â
She shines the flashlight around the cabin. Her cubist artwork still hangs on the wall above the piano. But the table that usually resides in the corner has been pulled into the center of the cabin, with a bucket in the corner catching a rather impressive stream of water. The bed itself has been pulled away from the wall, towards the front of the cabin, and huddled in that bed is where Elliott sits, a book held to his chest.
âLeah darling! What are you doing here?â
Leah closes the door, leaning against it. The movement drags the spotlight of the flashlight across the floor, and itâs then that she sees water bubbling up between the panels. âElliott, your house is filling with water.â Her voice is somehow calm, despite the freezing rain she had to run through to get here, and the predicament her friend keeps putting himself in. âYour house is filling with water and youâre not even at the Saloon?â
âItâs 2am, I left there hours ago.â He at least manages to look a little ashamed. âI didnât think the storm was going to be as bad as it was.â
âThe Farmer told us the weather was going to be getting worse.â
âThe Farmer lives between the forest and the mountains, itâs a completely different biome than here on the coast.â Elliott presents his words with a flick of his hand, yet the ambivalence is undermined by the congestion in his nose and the slight tremble in his fingers.
âOh, did Demetrius tell you that?â Leah rhetorically asks as she walks over, bringing Elliottâs boots from where they had been discarded by the front door. âCome on; youâre spending the night at my place.â
Elliott blinks in surprise. âLeah, thatâsâŚyou really donât have to do that. Iâm quite fine here on my own. And I canât leave without my manuscript.â
âEl,â Leah murmurs, holding the boots out to him. She aims the flashlight at the ceiling, the light cascading down around the both of them, giving them enough to see in the pale white light. âYou have the story in your mind. You can bring it with you, if you really need to, but Iâm not leaving you here, alone, withââ
Her words are covered by the loud crack of thunder. Pointedly, she gestures around the leaky cabin.
She sees a bit of that classic Elliott pride in his eyes, the squaring of his shoulders. Heâs older than her, yet she consistently takes on the leading role, the more grounded approach, because she canât fully lose herself in make believe worlds. Her work is in reality, and the reality of this situation is that she canât walk away and leave him here alone.
But the next rumble of thunder in the distance lets them both know that this storm isnât going to pass overnight; it will likely be here until tomorrow, leaving them in much the same predicament. Leah gives him another withering look, and two minutes later the duo make their way back to the forest.
As they pass over the bridge, Leah can hear the water sucking at the lower side of the stone structure. She watches as it spills over, and can hear the soft wheeze with each of Elliottâs breaths as they walk back to the forest. Itâs slight for now, but she can only imagine itâll get worse with time. Harvey will have something to say about it, thatâs for sure.
Together, the two arrive, rain soaked and nearly blinded by the darkness, to Leahâs cabin. She pushes the door open, ushering Elliott inside first, then following herself. âTake whatever you want from the bed,â she says, tiredly gesturing to the bed, flinging some water off her hand in the process.
The two kick their boots off and lay their jackets on the coat rack. Leah watches as Elliott carefully spreads the manuscript pages â only slightly crumpled â onto the darkened WIP table. She peels off her wet jeans and socks, casting them in front of the fire to dry out little by little, picking her way to the bed. She takes her hair out of its soaked braid, her hat also needing to dry.
âIf youâre hungry, I can whip us up some tea with elderberry syrup,â she offers, brushing her hair out.
Elliott comes over, clumsily putting his hair up into a bun and taking the softer, baggier pair of joggers from the bed. âThanks,â he murmurs, his voice a little hoarse.
Leah politely looks away when Elliott takes his shirt off, but she is relieved to see a bare back, meaning his binder isnât on. He tends to keep it on far past the guidelines for expected use, but thatâs an argument sheâs too tired to have right now. When theyâre both dressed in warmer, dry clothes, she pulls back the sheets on her bed and gestures for Elliott to get in.
âWhat? I canât possibly put you out of your own bed.â
She points more emphatically at the sheets. âI have a cot I can use, but you need a warm bed. In.â
He throws a pout at her, but which she returns by sticking her tongue out. She feels better â better that heâs good enough to be teasing her, and better that heâs getting in the bed and following her directions with minimal complaining. She goes to the small array of kitchen appliances she has tucked against the wall, and begins to prepare some elderberry syrup tea. Something to warm them both, and she notes the soft sniffles Elliott keeps giving off.
âDo you want something to eat?â she softly asks, the sound of the rain cocooning them in relative safety. Thunder booms every so often, but itâs not as close now, perhaps moving more towards the mountains, or simply a break in the storm.
Thereâs no response.
She turns to look, and sees him curled up on his side, the blankets pulled so only his eyes are visible, watching her. She furrows her brows a little, though she smiles in response, and softly prompts, âEl?â
He hums a little, and she can tell heâs smiling from below the blankets. âUh huh?â
âI asked if you wanted something to eat. I have some tom kha soup, if you want. With crab.â She watches as his brows furrow a little â now heâs confused.
âI thought you didnât eat meat.â Leahâs vegetarian, but that doesnât mean she canât stock her friendâs favorites.
She simply shrugs. âYeah, but you do.â At his resulting silence, she blushes a little more, turning back to stir the heating syrup. âWhat?â
Elliott remains silent, but she hears the soft rustle of sheets. âThatâs really very kind of you, Leah. Thank you.â
She feels her cheeks flame a little, then reaches down into the basket of jars. She pulls out the jar of soup and a pot, clicking the flame on the stove and pouring the soup inside to heat up. âY-yeah, anytime.â
Itâs now that she remembers exactly why it would be so difficult for her to have Elliott permanently in her space. If not for their quite different versions of productivity and rhythms of living, thereâs also the unmitigated crush that had blossomed over the course of their friendship. She knows heâs aware of her rocky foundations with romance, especially as it intersects with her art career â sheâs told Elliott the story of Kel more than once, sometimes after one too many beers at the Saloon. But Elliott was never anything but supportive, and he always made sure to respect her boundaries when it came to romance.
She knows that heâs currently working on some romance novel, though, and that part of that had to do with the Farmerâs influence. Then again, sheâs currently working on pieces for the town art show, also at the Farmerâs influence. Maybe theyâre all a little starstruck with the newcomer, or maybe the Farmer just makes for good inspiration. Muses come in all shapes and sizes, and the Farmerâs never been anything but helpful.
Theyâre the reason Leah has leftover tom kha soup in the first place.
She has a spoon in each hand, stirring the pots in circles, before the syrup reveals itself as ready. Her electric kettle has the water primed and ready, and she drizzles the syrup at the bottom of the cups before tossing in some mint tea and pouring the water over it. The rest, sheâll cool to keep on hand as actual syrup, but the freshly made syrup â or sauce, as it really is in this form â is good to go now.
Taking the cups over to the bed, she hands one to the newly resurfaced Elliott. He looks much softer and safer here, tucked in her bed, the sweater a little tight on his arms but still comfortable nonetheless. He takes the cup with gentle, ink stained fingers, green eyes watching her with something she canât quite name.
âDrink that and tell me how you feel in the morning,â she says, feeling her words slip quietly out of her mouth.
He nods, and she sees his soft freckles across the bridge of his nose, usually long dormant as the shorter days come about in the colder months of the year. âI have some inkling.â The words seem to puzzle him, and Leah tilts her head a little as he hurriedly takes a sip.
What could that mean?
âLet me get the soup. Iâll be the one eating it, itâs the least I can do.â Thereâs a darkened splotch on his upper lip, leftover from some elderberry syrup. She wants to reach up and wipe the syrup away, but she instead takes a sip of her own tea, nodding in gratefulness. Her legs ache from the struggle through mud and sand, and she hasnât sat down since they arrived back home.
Isnât that a thought? To call this a home in regards to them both.
She sits on the bed next to him, watching the fire dance in the brick enclosure. âYou could move in here full time,â she offers, her mouth working without full permission from her brain. âThoreau ran off to the woods for two years, two months, and two days. Think of the beach cabin as a summer home.â
âThoreau wasnât writing what I want to write. But I appreciate the comparison.â He laughs a little into his cup, fidgeting with his earring with one hand.
âJust, please think about it. I mean, what is the cabin going to look like when this storm ends? And winterâs coming, all of thatâs going to freeze over, and youâre far enough from Harveyâs that going to an appointment is a whole ordeal, andâŚLook, Elliott, I just donât feel comfortable letting you stay there.â
Elliott sighs. ââŚIâll stay for the next couple days. At least until I can get the water out of my house.â
âAnd fix it so that the water stops coming into your house. I mean, do you know how unsafe that is?â Leah is aware that sheâs perhaps ranting a little, but she feels itâs deserved.
âYes, darling, I know. Itâs all I can afford though, since no one in this town is moving out anytime soon.â He hops out of the bed, going over to address the soup. Wordlessly, she follows, handing him the only bowl she has in her possession. Enough living materials for one, not two, but she would be willing to make the choices to purchase more for him. Sheâd be willing to make that space in her life and fill it with Elliott, if only he would let her.
Once his soup is poured, she joins him back on the bed, sitting cross legged and clutching her tea. âYou pay nothing to live there; Iâm sure thereâs gotta be room somewhere. Maybe thereâs some apartments above Pierreâs? You know heâd love another way to make a quick buck.â
Elliott laughs, sipping the soup directly from the bowl. âMaybe, darling.â He sounds a little cleared up, and Leah hopes that trend continues. Nothing against Elliott, but she knows he can be a bit of a baby when heâs sick. Not that she finds it endearing or anything, or appointed herself Pelican Townâs resident Sick-Elliott-Caretaker despite knowing this. Nothing like that.
âI just, you know. If you donât want to come here. I know that my sculpting can be kind of loud, and I know you need quiet to work, and thereâs not a whole lot of places in town.â She tugs a little at the sweater by her wrist, suddenly shy.
âIâŚwouldnât mind living with you, Leah. Iâm sure we could come up with an arrangement to suit both of our styles of work.â  Heâs also blushing, but Leah attributes that to the heat in the cabin. Surely, that just means the warm soup is working its magic.
She nods, and the conversation quietly dies. Rain continues to pummel the roof and siding of the house, but thankfully no more trees fall. They finish their tea, and Elliott finishes his soup, and theyâre faced with the exhausting prospect of pulling out a cot and making it with pillows.
âOr you could just sleep in here,â Elliott offers, patting the sheets next to him. âI would sleep better knowing Iâve not displaced you for longer than this storm required.â
Leah rubs her eye, looking at the warm inviting sheets â and man within them â and the empty space where she knows her cot could go. âWouldâŚyou be comfortable with that?â
Elliott nods. âI trust you.â
That alone makes Leahâs heart race a double time, and she heads over to the bed. She slips between the sheets, nose to nose with her closest friend, feeling safe in the rain. Just in case he catches anything, she knows she shouldnât be so close to him. But itâs comfortable, and the moment he slings an arm over her waist sheâs out like a light, exhaustion finally catching up with her.
â˘â˘â˘
She wakes with Elliottâs arm still around her, her back pressed to his front, and the rain continuing down. Itâs less now than it was in the middle of the night, and she hopes that means the damage to the town is going to be less than the forest. Still, she can hear the rushing of the river, still overly full of rain water, and she knows itâs going to be a while before she feels safe taking her sketching supplies to the pier to draw lake life.
Leah yawns, stretching out a little, feeling her muscles yelling at her for having the audacity to go for a midnight sprint through the rain. Elliott tugs her closer, and she remembers that he hasnât actually left the bed, nor her house, nor her person. She freezes, eyes wide, staring across her cabin at the whorls in the wood.
Elliott is still asleep, breaths deep and even. She knows that thereâs a possibility that he wakes up, shy and embarrassed, about them being so pressed together. Even still, thereâs only one bed, and itâs a small bed at that, so maybe they can both be forgiven this moment of weakness. She closes her eyes, resting again in this warm embrace.
Sheâs unsure of how long passes before she wakes up again, this time because Elliott himself is waking up. He rolls away from her, his shoulder hitting the wall if the dull thud is anything to go by, resulting in a sleepy grumble.
Staying still, Leah waits to see how Elliott responds to their morning position. True to the romantic man he is, he reaches over and resumes holding her closer to him. She feels him sigh, his breath moving over her hair, followed by a soft, âGood morning, darling.â
âGood morning,â she replies, wondering how he knew she was awake. His resulting startle tells her that he did not, in fact, know she was awake. Which meant he wasnât saying that for her benefit at all.
Interesting.
âHowâd you sleep?â he asks, still holding her close to him.
âGood; how about you?â
âOh, wonderful, thanks. Havenât been this warm since before the Moonlight Jellies arrived.â She can feel his smile through the words, and it makes her laugh a little bit to herself.
âWell, stick around here and youâll be as toasty as you like.â
Thereâs a moment of quiet, and then a soft response. âIâd like that.â
Leah blushes, biting her lower lip. âI can get us some breakfast, if youâd like. Itâs not too late, I donât think.â
âThat would be nice.â Elliott turns with a stretch, back cracking a little. âI suppose I should see what the damage is at home.â
The dip in his tone makes Leah feel guilty. Of course her first priority was to get Elliott to a safe place, but after that, what of what he had to leave behind? He claimed to do well in his self-imposed minimalist lifestyle, but to Leah, that meant what little he had was very important. It was something he couldnât deal without, if heâs to be believed.
âIâm sorry,â she says quietly. âWhy donât we ââ
A sneeze interrupts her, and she starts, hopping out of bed. The movement makes her muscles protest, and she winces a little, rubbing a hand down her thighs. âWeâll go to Harveyâs first. Then breakfast, and thenâŚthe beach? Itâs still raining, so it might not beâŚdone.â
It referring to the slow damage done to the beachside shack. She doesnât want to be impolite, but she doesnât want to sugarcoat how bad it could be. She doesnât think sheâll ever get the image of water bubbling up between the floorboards out of her head.
âSure,â Elliott says, his breathing a little raspier than before. He clears his throat, brows furrowed, the magic of the morning seeming to fade away. âYeah, letâs see what he has to say.â
Harvey, of course, was happy to see them both, then contrite at his happiness as if theyâd accuse him of being pleased with their misfortune. Luckily, Elliott didnât seem to have anything serious, besides a growing cold. He sent them home with some medicine, tucked away in a little waxy paper bag folded over, and prescription for rest and hydration. Nothing to do but wait it out, heâd said, and Leah had bitten the inside of her cheek.
Of course.
âWell that sucks,â Elliott mutters as they leave the clinic. The Saloon isnât open yet, and Leah doesnât feel great bringing Elliott to a bar first thing in the morning.
âYeah. Sorry about the sickness, but it could have been worse if youâd stayed.â
Elliott shakes his head. âNot that, darling. That I could have gotten you sick is the real drawback here. I do my best work when left to my own devices, but I know how you like to travel around Pelican Town, gaining inspiration from whatever you can find. Iâd hate to be in the way of that.â
Leah frowns a little, biting her lower lip. âWellâŚthank you.â Itâs still strange to have someone care for her when sheâs so used to doing the caring for others. Itâs not that Elliott is immature, far from; itâs just that he has grand, romantic notions that often leave him far from reality, and that means he acts a little less like one would expect. Then again, only Harvey and Shane seem to be in Elliottâs same age bracket, and each of them is so different from the other, Leah doesnât know how they begin to compare.
âHere, why donât we do this? You head home, and Iâll restock on some groceries and healthy stuff. When youâre feeling better, weâll handle the, uh, Beach Situation.â She gives him a warm, crooked smile, and sheâs not imagining the way his face flushes a little, independent of the low grade fever heâs running.
âThat could take days, though. Leah, I donât want to ââ
âPlease.â She puts her hand on his forearm, ignoring the little look Jodi gives her as she and Sam walk towards Joja Mart. âFor me? Youâre not going anywhere else for the time being, I wonât let you.â
Elliott raises an eyebrow. âOh, you wonât let me?â
âYeah, I wonât let you.â The challenge comes with a bit of familiar sass, and she raises a brow in turn. âThereâs nowhere else to go, El, please.â
He sighs. âFine, fine. You win.â And then a warm smile. âIâll be waiting.â
â˘â˘â˘
Elliott remains with Leah for four days. It takes two before he starts personally feeling better, but it takes another day before the beach is dry enough for either of them to consider going through the sand. Elliottâs important belongings are salvageable, though bigger pieces like the bed and tables need severe rebuilding to make them serviceable again. The mold and rot creeping up the pianoâs legs, however, nearly drives Elliott to tears.
Leah comforts him, passing along contact information she had from when she still lived with Kel in the city and had debated a career in music. It would take a couple months, but the piano could be good as new in no time.
On the fourth day, Elliott and Leah sit in the cozy woodland cabin, each quietly working. Elliott had crafted a space for himself at the table, back to the open windows, writing whatever additional scenes had come together in his feverish state. Leah stations herself at the easel, broad strokes bringing to life a vivid autumnal woodland scene. These quiet moments shared together have the opportunity to become something more profound.
Leah finishes putting the touch on the sunlight coming through the young buckâs antlers before she finally pulls back. âEl? Do you wanna go to the fair?â she asks, stretching back and feeling her body thank her after so long of remaining in one position.
Elliott grunts in response, and she looks over her shoulder, seeing him clearly still in the midst of working. She sets her brush down on the paper towel, getting up and going over to him. âElliott.â
âHuh?â He looks up, brows furrowed, flyaways swaying with the movement of his head. âWhatâs wrong, darling?â
âThe fair. Itâs starting soon. Do you want to go?â She comes up beside him, one hand in her pocket of her paint splattered jeans, the other on the table.
âOh. Iâd like that, sure.â He gives her a warm smile, hastily grouping the pages back together. âSorry about not hearing you. I had a new idea for a story.â
âIs that so?â
âYes; it takes place in an enchanted forest, where the weather is broken. Snow comes up from the ground, lakes and rivers collect at the bottom of tree branches â very DalĂ meets Escher. But thereâs one woman who moves forward through time, while the rest of the world moves backwards, and she meets a man who moves only through space but not through time. So everything happens at the same time for him, though he can go to different places to experience other perspectives. And they have to work together to put the forest back to rights, but they each have to rely on the other because while she can see the future, he can see the immediate changes and ripple effects, and they have to communicate that with the other while being completely unable to see what the other can. Itâs an exercise in communication, trust, and romance.â
This is the farthest from her understanding as an artist, though she does understand the artistic references. âWow. That soundsâŚinteresting.â
He gives her a look as he laces his boots up. ââŚYeah.â The look on his face is somewhat confused. Or maybe something else.
âWhat?â
He blushes. âNothing. Letâs go?â
âNo, hey, wait.â She steps between him and the door, looking up at him. âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to say that itâs a bad premise or anything. I think itâs really cool, itâs justâŚwhat are you calling it so far?â
âSunken Shores,â he murmurs, and she has a small realization, thatâs more of an altering of her perspective. Something that was always just slightly to the left, just slightly out of reach, now slotting into the proper place.
ââŚReally?â Thatâs not what she means to say, and she watches how his expression shutters. âI mean â Elliott, is that inspired by, uhâŚâ
The pain in his expression shifts a little. âYou really didnât know?â
âIâŚâ Thereâs no way that sheâs going to be able to duck out of this conversation. âI didnât want to get my hopes up.â
âGet your hopes up,â he repeats in a whisper, as if completely unsure that she actually means that. âWhyâŚyou..oh.â
She blushes. âYeah, oh.â
âWhy didnât you say anything?â
âI was going to! But then you were here, and then you were sick, and I didnât want to make things weird while you were houseless. And you really seemed to like living here, and I didnât want to say something and make you uncomfortable. Youâre my best friend, El. I didnât want to ruin that.â She starts out defiant, voice raised a little in a panic, but it falls to a whisper by the end of it.
âOh.â He rolls his lips, green eyes looking askance, before searching her face. âI mean, Iâve liked you for quite a while. I knew how things ended with Kel, though, and I didnât want to press where you were, you knowâŚstill healing.â
She winces a little at the mention of her ex. âYeahâŚshe did a number on me, huh?â A beat, and then, âIâm better. Than I was. And I appreciate that, andâŚIâŚdo you, um, want toâŚ?â
Elliott blinks for a moment. âDo I want to what?â
Leahâs face flushes, her entire body heating. âDo you want to go out? Maybe?â
He tilts his head, giving her a warm smile. âWhat do you think going to the fair is?â
âOh!â The noise is involuntary, a mere vocalization of a series of exclamation points. Sheâs flustered, and it only gets worse when Elliott takes another step, further into her personal space. He puts his fingertips beneath her chin, delicately tipping her chin upwards so they can lock eyes.
âA gentleman has no reason to withhold his love from the public,â he murmurs, âyet he should also never kiss and tell. So I find myself at odds, with how to proceed.â
This canât be happening to her. The most romantic man in Pelican Town canât be asking her in his roundabout way if she wants to kiss. She nods, barely adding pressure to the fingertips at her jaw, not breaking away from his gaze. âI wouldnât mind,â she whispers.
Despite his obvious charm, Leah knows heâs never really been with anyone for a long period of time. Part of that was due to his discomfort with his perception before coming out, even to himself; once that veil had been lifted, and Elliott established a new relationship with himself, his confidence grew, and with it, his attractiveness. But heâs still new to all of this, and Leah wants to gently push him along, but all of those thoughts of remaining careful melt away the moment his lips touch hers.
She feels herself wrap her arms over his shoulders, pulling him closer to her, going up on her tiptoes and humming into the kiss. It feels electric, like the storm that had forced the two of them together, yet by some miracle theyâre able to keep it semi-chaste. When they part, their gazes remain on the otherâs mouth, as if waiting for permission for a second kiss. It comes easily, Leah softly pressed against the wood of the doorway, Elliott now cradling her face between his large, writerâs hands, softly tasting the morning coffee from each otherâs mouths.
When Elliott pulls back for the second time, Leah realizes theyâre both panting. âMaybeâŚthat was overdue,â she says softly, and Elliott laughs.
âOne could say that.â He tucks a stray piece of hair behind her ear, and gives her a fond look that is familiar â one he gave her from between her sheets on the night of the storm. âCome. Letâs go get some of Gusâ specialty barbecue. And, perhaps, some of Farmerâs wine for the lady.â
Leah hugs him, pressing her face to his chest. They have so much more to talk about â the logistics of Elliottâs winter move, affording the piano repair, how Elliott will work in the cabin when Leah does her winter sculpting, when they should make the relationship public, among other things â but for right now sheâs content to be here, in her cabin, much less lonely than either of them had been before.
âSure. Letâs hit up the fair.â And so they do.

Top 10 Nintendo Switch 2017 Games for Girls
Like a few of our lucky readers, I was fortunate enough to get a day-one Preorder for the Nintendo Switch. Sadly had to get the plain grey one, but beggars canât be choosers right? đ What games are you most looking forward to? For me, the only launch title right now that has caught my eye is Zelda, but thatâs sure to change as we get closer to release. There are a ton of interesting looking games coming out by the end of the year for the new console.
Here are the Top 10 Nintendo Switch Games Due out in 2017 that I am most looking forward to.
NEW UPDATE: Check Out our List of Upcoming 2018 Nintendo Switch Games for Girls here.
Top 10 Nintendo Switch Games
Mario Odyssey
Mario Odyssey â The new Mario Game looks amazing. It reminds me a lot of Mario 64 with a huge open world full of lots of fun and crazy looking levels. Mario has some new abilities too such as being able to throw and jump on his cap to cross large areas. Mario will fly on an airship to travel to âstrange new worldsâ (for Mario and his friends), but the world is actually made up of different places that we know in real life such as New York City, and Latin and South America. Mario Odysseyâs release date is December 29th, 2017.
Pokemon Stars
Pokemon Stars â Although it is still a rumor at this time, several retailer leaks such as one that has since been taken down on Gamestop seem to refer to the existence of a new Pokemon Game for Nintendo Switch. The rumor is that it is a new version of Pokemon Sun and Moon with over 20 new pokemon added in. This rumor has not been confirmed by Nintendo and so no release date has been given.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley â I actually spent the majority of this past weekend playing the PC version of Stardew Valley. True, you can already play this game right now today on PC and other consoles⌠But imagine being able to play it ON THE GO, away from home. This will be the titleâs first entry into mobile or handheld gaming. Stardew Valley is an amazing âtributeâ to classic Nintendo games such as Harvest Moon and Rune Factory â so it makes sense that it would find a home on the Nintendo Switch as well. It is such a relaxing game and the type of game that you can pick up and play as little as an hour, or easily spend 20+ hours straight with. The Nintendo Switch ability to switch from handheld to console form lets you play Stardew Valley whenever, wherever, and however you want. Although it is definitely for sure coming to the Nintendo Switch, there is no official word on a release date.
youtube
Seasons of Heaven â Seasons of Heaven is a confirmed Exclusive title for the new Nintendo Switch. Graphically it looks pretty amazing for a Nintendo console and much more like something that we would see on a PS3 or PS4. The game is based on a novel by the same name and features a boy with his dog as they travel a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. The fact that itâs exclusive to the Switch gives Nintendo some more advantage. In my opinion a console is only as good as its exclusives! Iâm looking forward to learning more about Seasons of Heaven in the months to come. No Release date has been set yet for this title.
Dragonquest XI
Dragonquest XI â There will now be three versions of the newest Dragon Quest game all set to release in 2017. These include a fully 3D version for the PS4, a 2D/3D style for the 3DS and a 3D style version for the new Nintendo Switch. Clearly still, from trailers and screenshots, the PS4 version is going to still have the upperhand when it comes to graphics and resolution. However, the ability now to have a version where you can play on the go (as with the 3DS) OR play on the big screen (as with the PS4) all in one version now (on the Nintendo Switch), gives one some pause into deciding which version of the game to pick up. Regardless of which version you get, this already looks set to be an amazing game. Dragonquest has long been the best selling RPG franchise of all time (yes, even more so than Final Fantasy) and many fans around the world are anxiously awaiting the newest installment into the Dragonquest saga.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 â Another exciting Nintendo Switch exclusive. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a direct sequel finally to cult classic Xenoblade Chronicles from back on the Wii. The Wii U also saw Xenoblade Chronicles X â However, that was more of a side game, and not directly related to the first. Xenoblade Chronicles remains one of the greatest games on the Wii and until the recent release on the Nintendo E-Store, it was a highly sought after collectorâs item. Not only that, but it is a fantastic RPG. Iâm so thrilled to see it getting a sequel that Iâm almost just as excited for this title as for the new Zelda or SMT.
Fire Emblem Warriors â There is extremely little details known about this title yet. Thereâs going to a live event on January 18th at 5pm EST dedicated fully to the Fire Emblem series. Speculation includes that the live event will reveal more details not only about Fire Emblem Warriors but also about the upcoming mobile game that was originally announced for 2016 but got delayed until âSometime in 2017â.
Shin Megami Tensei
Shin Megami Tensei â I am the biggest Atlus fangirl ever. Tokyo Mirage Sessions is my favorite Wii U game â and Iâve been hooked on Persona and SMT games ever since Playstation One days. I suspect that this will be a much darker game than say Tokyo Mirage Sessions or Persona, and go back to gameplay similar to that in Devil Summoner and Devil Survivor. Iâm really excited to hear that a new SMT game is in the works. It is such an underloved and underrated series. I was most surprised by this announcement at the Live event last week. Thereâs barely any details yet, just that it will coincide with the seriesâ 25th anniversary.
youtube
Project Octopath Traveler â a brand new exclusive from Square-Enix. The trailer seems to hint at an open world with multiple endings and a branching plot that is determined by choices the player makes. These types of games are always my favorite, so I am super interested in learning more about Project Octopath Traveler. It is being developed by the same team who worked on Bravely Default. The artwork is retro which is an interesting approach because as weâve seen with other titles such as Seasons of Heaven, the console is definitely quite capable of more âNext-Genâ style graphics as well. This leads me to believe that this title will try to pander to us older fans from the 16bit era. Graphics and gameplay seem to remind me in some parts of some older Square games such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Saga Frontier, Legend of Mana, Live A Live, and Ogre Battle. Very excited to see where this one goes.
zelda breath of the wild
Zelda Breath of the Wild is by far the most anticipated and exciting launch title for the Nintendo Switch. There are several different collector editions for quite a large price! The collector editions include things like a carrying case, replica sword, soundtrack, cloth map, and coin. Amazon and Gamestop both sold out of these sets already. Best-buy began preorders for them today. But no matter if you get the Special Edition, or Master Edition, Or the base game is available for $59.99 you will be getting one amazing game. Keep in mind, if ordering the digital version, it will take up over HALF of the storage on the Nintendo Switch. Yikes! It is the first time for Zelda to take a more âwesternâ approach to gaming, emulating features commonly found in Elder Scrolls games such as an open world and sandbox style gameplay. It also will have more than 100 Shrines of Trial to explore. Itâs going to be a huge game. And from the launch trailer video, I feel that the story is also going to be very emotional and exciting. More so than any other game on the list, this is the one that should not be missed.
I also have to give a nod to a few other 2017 Switch games that didnât quite make the list including the new Bomberman Game, Skyrimâs first foray into handheld gaming, Minecraft Switch Edition (for much of the same reasons as why Stardew Valley made the list), Mario Kart, Sonic, and Splatoon 2. With strong support from third party developers, and a few iconic Nintendo franchises making appearances, the gaming library for Nintendo Switch is already looking extremely promising.
Also the fact that the console is not region locked gives the fan translation community a chance to shine and bring us all the great games that Nintendo of America will either censor, or simply take a pass and not localize for North America. This could in theory mean that we could see some visual novels or otome games or more JRPGs on this Nintendo console provided that the English speaking Fan Translation community get behind certain projects.
The one franchise I expected to see, and didnât see, was Smash Brothers. Also would love to see a new Donkey Kong Country game.
Although it is still early days, the future looks bright for Nintendoâs newest console.
Let us know in the comments below what Nintendo Switch Games Youâre most excited for!

Best Games for Laptops and Low-End PCs in 2020
We used to view the idea of gaming on a laptop as a virtual contradiction in terms, at least for anyone who didnât want to invest in a so-called âdesktop replacement.â Over the last decade, weâve seen a lot more laptops shipping with integrated graphics that are capable of at least some light gaming and a proliferation of indie titles with less aggressive requirements. Put the two together, and youâve got a lot more options for low-end gaming today than 10-20 years ago.
In this list of our favorites, weâve tried to blend a mixture of modern titles and a handful of older classics. If youâve been gaming for a number of years, we strongly suggest Googling âbest games of X,â to remind yourself what hidden gems you might have missed the first time around. A game that required a midrange PC to play in 2011 likely runs just fine on an integrated GPU in 2019, especially if youâve got an Ice Lake-based notebook or Ryzen APU-based laptop.
Since the last time we refreshed the list, weâve trimmed a few titles off, kept a few, and added some new games. The PC gaming news cycle often doesnât serve the interests of the larger PC gaming community when it comes to game discovery. This is particularly and sadly true for low-end gamers. Lost in the endless churn of new titles is the fact that there are literally thousands of amazing PC titles released long before you bought your system. Donât be afraid to go digging for gems you might have missed in previous generations.
One way to express a love of PC gaming is certainly by investing lots of money in gaming hardware, but itâs certainly not the only one. What matters isnât the amount of money you can plow into the hobby. Itâs how much you enjoy it in the process.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden
This XCOM-meets-Fallout title is based on the tabletop Mutant Year Zero game. If youâve played the modern XCOM games, youâll be familiar with most of the gameplay elements, though Mutant Year Zero gives you direct control of your squad outside of combat and fuses XCOMâs gameplay with some light RPG elements.
The worst thing we can say about Mutant Year Zero is that youâll have to do some Googling to figure out which buttons are tied to which keyboard functions. The gameâs plot and post-apocalyptic setting recall the best parts of Fallout, and while the game isnât as deep as one of those sprawling titles, it still feels like a spiritual sequel. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden feels a bit like a âAAâ game, for lack of a better phrase. Reasonably well-polished with solid aspirations, but you wonât mistake it for a 400-hour dungeon crawler.
World of Warcraft Classic
I had long since intended to have my WoW Classic reviews done by now, but the reality of leveling and my own crazy schedule have kept me working on my Classic Paladin and the slow climb to Lvl 40. Christmas is coming, which makes this a perfect time to revisit the best-loved MMO of Christmas, 2004.
Lakeshire, Redridge Mountains. Left is Retail, right is Classic.
Itâs World of Warcraft: Classic, which is to say, #NoChanges (except for a few of the changes, but really, there arenât that many). I might be leveling at the speed of grass growing, but by God, I am leveling. Thereâs a lot to love in the original version of Blizzardâs MMO classic, especially if you like games of this era in the first place. It may use the modern WoW engine, but Blizzard re-used original WoWâs textures and assets. The result is a game that runs just fine on a low-end PC, including Carrizo-powered AMD ultrabooks and Intel integrated graphics.
Untitled Goose Game
Untitled Goose Game challenges you to find the Canadian goose inside yourself. Yup. This is a game about being an unrepentant asshole. Since the joys of honking and flapping donât require a high-end PC, Untitled Goose Game is another game thatâll run on just about any toaster you can drag out of storage or cajole into running.
Honk. Flap. Steal objects, trick humans, annoy pets, wash, rinse, and repeat if necessary. Itâs a brilliant game for people turned off by âtypicalâ titles looking for a silly, funny, low-key experience.
Arkham City
Iâve decided to switch my low-end PC recommendation from Arkham Asylum to the later Arkham City. Arkham Asylum is, to be sure, still an excellent game, and it runs on an even lower-spec system than Arkham City. But between the two of them, Arkham City is the better overall Batman game. Batmanâs overall bag of tricks gets polished and AC offers you playing time as characters like Catwoman, with her own distinct moveset and animation style.
Arkham City feels as though it genuinely captures what it would be like to âbeâ Batman, with a clever twist on why you face a never-ending army of thugs. If you want to find out if youâre going to like the Arkham game series, Iâd say this is the best one to try. If you need something even gentler on system specs, try the original Arkham Asylum.
Into the Breach
Into the Breach is a turn-based strategy game that takes place on small maps of 8Ă8 grids. From the makers of FTL, Into the Breach challenges you to beat back waves of attackers in turn-based combat. There are no XCOM-style probability fields to deal with here â you get full transparency into what actions will be taken by both your own characters and the enemies you engage with.
Into the Breach launched in 2018, but itâs still winning recognition for its unique approach to turn-based combat today. Definitely worth checking out, if youâre looking for some turn-based combat options.
West of Loathing
West of Loathing is a âgraphicalâ adventure game that could run on a Lite-Brite. Donât let the black-and-white stick-based graphics fool you â under the hood is a classic adventure game with RPG elements, killer clowns, demon cows, snake oil salesman, and a heap of spittoons to dig through in search of loot. The dialog is laugh-out-loud funny and the gameâs irreverent humor recalls the best adventure game writing of earlier eras.
West of Loathing came out at the end of 2017, but itâs still a top pick if you need a game that runs on anything and offers some genuine laugh-out-loud moments.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley was heavily inspired by the Harvest Moon series of video games but adds its own spin on the concept. Explore Pelican Town, make friends, fall in love, and restore your grandfatherâs farm to health in a gentle, open-ended title that will tease your curiosity as opposed to yanking you hither and yon with frantic quest demands.
Stardew Valley recently received a major endgame update in Patch 1.4, with new monsters, fish ponds, a new mystery to solve, various bug-fixes, quality-of-life improvements, and similar updates. Multiplayer support is also now available.
Cuphead
Cupheadâs visual aesthetic is truly unique â itâs the only game weâve ever seen that mimics the ârubber hoseâ animation style of the early 1930s in a frenetic run-and-gun shooter. Youâll need sharp reflexes to beat the game, but not much in the way of PC horsepower.
Cuphead is a great game for someone looking for a game you might fairly call âNintendo hard,â particularly if they enjoy its animation.
Minecraft
The open-world sandbox of Minecraft has been used to create everything from 1:1 scale models of the starship Enterprise to functional (if simple) CPUs. In between, thereâs an easily accessible game with a rich crafting system, dangerous mobs, and huge worlds to explore. If your ideas of gameplay run more towards âgive me a big space and lots of tools,â and less towards coherent narrative and story-driven play, you may find Minecraft much to your liking.
That doesnât actually tell you nearly enough about Minecraft, a game thatâs inspired millions of people to spend billions of hours stacking blocks on top of each other to build everything from an exact replica of the USS Enterprise from Star Trek to actual working computers. Minecraft is a phenomenal crafting and building game.
Orcs Must Die, Orcs Must Die 2
Orcs Must Die and Orcs Must Die 2 are some of our favorite titles for mindless slaughtery goodness and have a permanent space on my hard drive. This hybrid tower-defense/action game tasks you with burning, blasting, freezing, smashing, dissolving, shooting, and generally wreaking mayhem against wave after wave of orcs, trolls, ogres, and other various bad guys as they seek to invade your home. Itâs easy to learn and sometimes surprisingly difficult to master.
I recommend both, but OMD2 is definitely the better game.
Darkest Dungeon
Darkest Dungeon is a 2D, side-scrolling dungeon crawler with a side helping of Lovecraftian horror and a mental health management simulator. As your heroes wind their way through the stygian abyss, theyâll face the dripping claws and rasping moans of the eons-damned creatures that dwell beyond the stars. Safeguard them carefully, or youâll find the abyss staring back at you when you least expect itâŚ
Darkest Dungeon can be legitimately annoying, but if you love mods like âLongest Warâ for XCOM, this series is a treasure. DD doesnât pull punches, and if you think youâve figured the game out, that probably means thereâs a DLC or difficulty level waiting to kneecap you around the corner.
So thatâs our list. Feel free to chime in with your own. What older games or titles still have a cherished spot on your hard drive, and what games do you find yourself returning to, long after theyâve supposedly been surpassed by more recent releases?
