Magical Trans Comfort Fest (AKA MT comfest) 2023!

For the third consecutive year, we are running the MT comfest! With new prompts, fresh out of the oven, we cannot wait to see what you'll offer the world! This fest is meant to provide comfort and a sense of community to those who might have a hard time during the holidays, and those who want to spread warmth during this time! Thank you @basicallyahedgehog for your beautiful graphics.

This is a very informal fest, so there is no hard deadline and you don’t have to sign up– all you have to do is create your work, and then post it into the collection once it’s open! The rules are the same as last year– above all, we ask for respect and kindness in both creating and interacting with this fest. Your creation must also have a positive tone, be an HP work, be thoroughly tagged, and contain at least one trans character. Works can be mature or explicit as long as they are tagged appropriately and the creator is over 18. You do not have to be part of the server to participate, though we’d love for you to join!

You can produce whatever you feel comfortable with, whether it be a drabble, a long one-shot, a doodle, a time-consuming fanart, a podfic, a collage, a fic-bind, a headcanon post… whatever you want!

The fest will run for three days and we are providing prompts for inspiration, but feel free to pick and choose or completely ignore them if you have other ideas! The collection will be opened closer to the date of publishing. In the meantime, feel free to check out the great works from last year’s fest!

You might have peeked two sets of prompts earlier on this post. For extra spiciness, we got you another entire new set of prompts! We have the regular prompts, and same as last year, they can be combined or used on their own. Then you have the dual prompts, who go together and don't bear really well to be separeted. Have fun!

Honestly, I don't know what came over me, but I had such a blast creating this! You might've seen those videos of artists editing Disney screenshots to whatever theme, and I did exactly that: I drarry-fied (and trans-ed lmao) Hercules! (So this isn't entirely original art, just keep that in mind)

Since I've read Falling for a Golden Boy by @stargazing-enby I've seen Draco as Megara and Harry as Hercules, so THANK YOU DOOM for the inspiration! <3

“ Draco. ” Harry was pretty sure he felt his heart break. “You can do whatever you want to.”

“Are you… are you sure?” Draco was still soft spoken, sounding so unsure of himself. It felt unnatural.

“Men, women, people, gender nonconforming, it doesn’t matter. Do what makes you happy, Draco.”

Draco turned away with a little hum, contemplating his gingerbread man — person — with his head tilted first one way then the next. Harry held his breath, feeling like he was witnessing something important.

Happy holidays to our magical trans family. We hope you’ve been able to find rest and peace amongst the chaos of the holiday period.

Now that the food has been eaten and the wrapping paper cleared away, we’re here to remind you that the Magical Trans Comfest 2023 is still open! There is no need to sign up and no hard deadline - create what you want, when you want to. Fic, art, podfic, collage, fic binding, poetry, whatever you love to make, we’d love to see it!

This fest aims to bring some comfort and warmth during what can be a difficult time for many. As always we ask that you be respectful in your works and when interacting with others’.

Magical Trans Comfest 2022 Collection Open!

The MT Comfest AO3 collection is open for your works! You can post your work on the day of the prompt, early, late, or even after the holidays. We won’t be posting a masterlist until December 31st, and will keep the collection open until mid-January to give everyone some extra time! We also encourage you to tag us if you post anything to Tumblr so that we can reblog it 💕

Please keep in mind that the AO3 collection is unmoderated, so you are responsible for posting your work into it yourself (instructions on how to do that are below!) We ask that you double check the 2022 fest info before you post to make sure your work fits into the very broad guidelines of this fest ✨ As always, the mods are here if you have any questions or concerns!

How to post to the 2022 MT Comfest collection

Please pay careful attention to this section, since we’ve created a sub collection for 2022 and want to make sure your work appears in it! There are two different ways to add your work to the collection:

Posting directly to the collection

To do this, go to the 2022 fest collection and click the button underneath the title that says “Post to Collection”. This will take you directly to a draft page where you can create your work just like normal and when you post it will be in the collection!

Adding the collection to an existing draft

If you already have a draft of your work and it is not in the collection, scroll down to the “Associations” section of your draft. Underneath “Post to Collections/Challenges”, type this phrase exactly: HP_Trans_Comfest_2022 and then type a comma. The collection will most likely not appear in the drop down suggestion menu, but that’s totally fine! Putting a comma after the fest name adds it to the collection once you save your draft.

If you have any issues with adding your work to the collection, reach out to the mods and we will be happy to help you!

Here’s a little something for @magicaltrans ‘s Magical Trans Fest 2022 ! With the prompt : name choosing. There are some Easter eggs that will make sense in the next days’ drawings hehe (also, just in case, Draco says no to Percival because of Percy Weasley)

HP Magical Trans Comfest 2022 Banner Reveal and Announcement!

Hello! We’re so excited to get the second year of the MT Comfest started in just a few days on December 23, and we have a couple of exciting things to share 🏳️‍⚧️

Firstly, check out our beautiful 2022 fest banner created by the very talented @babooshkart! We asked her to capture the spirit of the fest in whatever way they wanted, and we couldn’t be more in awe of the finished art 💖 Thank you Boo!

Secondly, the HP Magical Trans mods will be continuing the tradition of making a donation to both TransgenderNI and Mermaids based on the amount of works posted in this fest. To be clear, we are not asking you to donate any money (unless you just want to!) The mods will use their own money and donate 1€ to each charity for each piece of work produced for the fest*.

*One fanwork = 1€ to TransgenderNI + 1€ to Mermaids. We have a limit of 50€ for each charity.

One of your prompts is flux- could you elaborate on what you mean by that?

Hi Nonnie! Of course 😊

“Flux” has a couple of different definitions, but in the context of this fest we were really looking at these two:

A continuous moving on or passing by

Change, fluctuation - a thing, person or situation can be described as being in a “state of flux”

Outside broad definitions flux is also part of a few different trans identities. These include (but I’m sure aren’t limited to!)

Genderflux - often included under the nonbinary and/or genderfluid umbrellas, people who describe themselves as genderflux experience fluctuating intensities of gender (as opposed to shifting genders, as in genderfluid)

Genderfluidflux - again within the genderfluid and nonbinary umbrellas - describes people for who both their *gender* and *how much* of that gender they identify with change over time.

Demiflux - for demiflux people part of their gender identity remains static, for example genderqueer, while they experience fluctuations in other parts of their gender identity, such as woman.

One way I personally imagine it is like having an x and y axis - the horizontal axis is gender and the vertical axis is how much gender I have. At any given time I could be anywhere on that grid, in different combinations.

All this to say. This prompt, as with all our comfest prompts, can be taken as literally or as figuratively as you want. At its heart we were wanting to capture the nature of change that can be involved for a trans or nonbinary person, how our relationship with gender may change over time etc etc. As long as it has meaning for you then that’s all we want 😊

Colour Outside The Lines

Part two of my series for @magicaltrans comfest 2022 for the prompt “extraterrestrial”. While I am making it a part of the series, this is really a stand-alone word-vomit of some of my thoughts and feelings around my own trans experience.

To be trans, Harry thinks, is to be a stranger in a strange land. It’s speaking in a language no one has ever heard of, let alone understands. It’s following an ancient map through a modern city.

Sometimes, Harry thinks that he was switched at birth, or dropped off at the cottage in Godric's Hollow by an alien spacecraft. He doesn’t belong in this world, with the rigid lines and the strict rules and the disapproving stares.

Growing up on Privet Drive had been like a never ending costume party. The long hair, the dresses, the name that felt like gravel in his mouth. He felt like the martian on one of Dudley’s shows, trying his best to blend in and not be found out. He hadn’t even known that there was a word for people like him, that he actually wasn’t from another planet. All he knew was wrong, wrong, wrong.

Coming out was pulling off the rubber mask only to reveal green skin and five eyes. It was drowning out Aunt Petunia’s shrieks as he asked Hagrid to “call me Harry, please.” It was squashing his disappointment at “ah, yes, well I’ll ask Dumbledore, he’ll know what to do about that,” as if Harry required permission to be himself.

It was funny, Harry thinks, that Hogwarts was almost just another version of the life-long costume party. The haircut, the clothes, the potions. No one ever questioned his pronouns or his name or his dormitory. With Dumbledore’s backing, it was as if the Girl Who Lived had never existed at all.

Through it all, Harry continued to feel other, to dance the strange dance that only he had been taught the steps for. Take the potion, wear the binder, check for facial hair. He learnt how to transfigure his eyebrows but not the important parts of his body. He dropped hobbies the second his roommates threw “girly” around the room, too scared that people would stop believing him if he painted his nails or took up knitting.

To be trans, Harry thinks, is to be alone in a crowded room. It’s learning a language too late, putting together a puzzle and discovering a missing piece.

But despite it all, to be trans, Harry knows, is beautiful. It’s rejecting arbitrary rules, it’s colouring outside the lines.

It’s being himself.
