Keith saw it the moment a crowded table filled with drunken people wildly jumping every which way pushed its luck a little too far. (Mamma mia, now I really know!) Lance’s eyes went wide, a shriek falling from his mouth as he lost his footing, tumbling to the floor below. Keith didn’t think. He was already reacting before he’d even made the decision to; already right there—reaching, catching Lance in his arms before he could fall. Keith's pulse hammered—even more than it had before. The momentum of the fall caused Lance to dip dangerously downwards. But Keith adjusted his grip, and heaved him back up. Lance’s hands scrambled, grasping tight around Keith’s neck. Keith’s breathing stopped. Everything around him faded away, and time stretched on, and on, and on. Their faces were so close—close enough that one more inch would have their noses brushing. "My, my, I should not have let you go!" Lance stared at him with wide eyes, unwavering as Keith stared right back. Keith vaguely registered the rest of the bar singing out the last line of the song while Lance’s warm puffs of breath danced across his lips.

“Dude,” Lance whispered in his ear, “do you really have your knife hidden in your shirt right now?”

Keith tried to think past the static and bells that made his mind fuzzy. Lance was so close. “Of course. We have to be prepared for anything.”

“But on the dance floor, Keith, really?” Lance said, one hand settled on Keith’s back and the other holding Keith’s hand in a dance position, leading their steps as he twirled them around to the beat of the music. “My man, we’ve literally been practicing calling our bayards to us for exactly this kinda thing.”

“You’re the one that asked me to dance. Don’t touch my back if it makes you so upset.”

“Oh?” Lance hummed, sliding his hand further around Keith’s waist so that he was, indeed, no longer touching the blade tucked out of sight into the waist of his shirt. The action brought their bodies even closer than the crowded dance floor already had them, their torsos practically touching along every line. Keith hoped he hid the hitch of his breath well enough.

“This okay, samurai?” Lance softly asked.

Keith could only nod. “S’fine,” he eked out, hand curling even more into Lance’s shoulder.

Lance chuckled, and Keith could feel the rumble of it. Oh god, kill him now.

  You guys feeling groovy? Anyone feel like DANCING? Perhaps...in a BALLROOM? 😃 😃 😃

He heard Shiro’s even, measured footsteps walk up the gangplank, across Red’s docking bay until he appeared in the doorway, still wearing the same blue-shirt, black-pants Altixian sleep clothes from this morning.

Shiro looked at Lance with a small, somber smile on his face. “Hey Lance,” he said softly.

Lance gave him a weak smile in return. “Hey.”

The space between them was heavy and thick as Shiro hovered in hesitation at the doorway. He nodded his head towards Lance’s cot. “That spot taken?” he asked—carefully, deliberately light.

Lance appreciated Shiro’s attempt as he silently shook his head. Shiro walked over, and sat down beside him. A silence fell over them—something that wasn’t quite awkward, but wasn’t quite comfortable either. Something serious and melancholy.

“So…” Shiro spoke quietly. His lips quirked sadly at Lance. “I think it’s probably about time we finished that talk of ours.”

  Who’s ready for all of the Lance love and validation you could hope for? Bring tissues, folks - I was on the verge of crying writing almost this entire chapter. It just hits me so hard in the feels. Now go shoo read!

He was so concentrated on the enemy shooting at him he didn’t notice the one sneaking up in his blind spot until it was too late.

His bayard was knocked out of his hand. Lance turned, only to meet the fist that cracked his head the wrong way around.

He stumbled, falling to the ground, head spinning. He tried getting up to fight back, but a hard kick sent him sprawling on the ground. A man towered above him, his sword already marking the downward swing that would be his end.

Lance closed his eyes.

Time passed. Keith wasn’t sure how much. But bright moonlight still filtered through the curtain, so it couldn’t have been too long. Keith was still holding Lance, the fingers of one hand lightly tapping out the beat of Mamma Mia against Lance’s back, his other hand lazily combing through Lance’s hair.

Keith had started doing it, and Lance hadn’t told him to stop, so Keith was just going to hope he was doing the right thing. His attention drew back to the moment when Lance’s thumb that had been idly dragging itself back and forth across Keith’s chest suddenly stopped.

“Do you want to go to sleep?” Keith asked into the still quiet of the room.

“I think I died,” was Lance’s response.

Summary:

Does anyone know Lance is in love with Keith?

Of course not. And Lance would very much like to keep it that way, thank you! Keith already doesn't want anything to do with him ever since coming back from that space whale; the last thing Lance needs on top of his crumbling self-worth and shaky standing in the team is a rejection that shatters his heart in pieces, too.

But now, Lance got himself in a bit of a pickle. Which is fine, because Lance has a plan to get out of it! A wonderful, brilliant, masterful, completely fool-proof plan. His team won't look at him like he's more incompetent than they already do, he won't have to spend the rest of his life trapped on some alien planet, and Keith will never find out just how head over heels he is for him. It's a win-win-win situation.

Of course, with Keith, things are never quite so simple, and Lance's plan soon causes a domino effect that changes the entire course of his life.
