Candle Guide
One of my favorite ways to level up my atmosphere is with candles they always lighten my mood. Which is why I try to get the most out of my candles by taking care of them! This guide will help you do the same.
How to buy the right candle:
1. Find your scent
Picking the right candle is key, so figure out where you want to place your candle, you should give this some thought because you might want a stronger scent in some areas but a lighter scent in others. For ex. a strong citrus scent in the bathroom but a light vanilla scent in the kitchen. To figure out the scent you want look at fragrance charts, analyze the perfumes you’re currently fond of and think about the signature notes you want in your candle, that should help you find your perfect match. (You can also visit the candle shop in person if it’s an option)
2. Pay attention to the candles burn time.
Just because the candles are fancy or expensive does not mean they’ll last long. Keep in mind that when it comes to candles size doesn’t matter! you can have a large candle with the same burn time as a small candle so pay close attention. The burn time is usually located at the bottom of the candle. If it’s not at the bottom it should be on the site you purchased your candle from a simple Google search will help.
Candle Care 101:
The first burn is the most important you have to make sure the top layer is melted completely to the edge of the container before you “blow out the candle” otherwise you will cause tunnel effect on the candle if you blow it out too soon. This means the next time you light the candle it won’t burn properly and it weakens the scent of your candle.
❆ When burning a candle it should always be on a coaster, ceramic or anything that’ll absorb the heat and protect your counters
❆ Always remove any fallen debris from your wax pool ( use a wick dipper or anything convenient to scoop out the debris )
❆ You should always trim your wick before burning this will help prevent smut from forming, stop your candle from smoking while allowing for a longer burn
❆ To put out your candle there are a few options
I’d suggest dipping the wick into the wax pool
You could also put your candle out with a wick snuffer or the lid of the candle
Last but not least simply blowing out the candle I don’t suggest blowing because it causes smoke and you LOSE fragrance but it’s always an option ❤️
Safety
Here are some important things to consider when buying candles most candles are dangerous! No I am not being dramatic a lot of candles are made of paraffin wax which is horrible for your body. When burned paraffin releases a lot of dangerous chemicals including carcinogens (cancer causing fumes). For my pet lovers out there your candles can be DEADLY to your little fur buddies so try sticking to 100% soy or coconut wax based candles. Also to all my people with asthma always light your candle in a ventilated area.
Other SUGGESTIONS
❆ Say no to paraffin (Yankee candles and Bath and Bodywork’s are the king and queen of paraffin wax)
❆ Make sure your wick is 100% Cotton or wooden
❆ Soy blend isn’t the best option it can still mean your wax contains paraffin within the blend
❆ Tread lightly with beeswax, yes beeswax is safe and doesn’t harm you or the environment but unlike the steps to collecting honey the process for retrieving beeswax completely disturbs the hive so if you can, stick to the other two options
❆ Stick to 100% soy or coconut wax based candles ( it’s your personal choice)
❆ Try to support small businesses all of the photos I used are from small businesses I’ll leave their information in the comment section below 💛
