A Whole Castle - Chapter 25 (timeline: #5)
Patton stiffened when he heard the front door open, but Virgil hugged Patton to his side tighter in a gesture of safety. Patton had been glued to Virgil since he got here, but he hadn’t gotten better about the adults, yet. Roman smiled widely at the trio and came in, locking up behind himself and carrying a few bags of groceries. Both Virgil and Janus sat up to greet him, though Virgil kept his arm around Patton.
“Good evening boys. Lovely to see you again, Janus. Are you staying for dinner?” Roman greeted with a dramatic bow. Patton liked it when he did that and calmed down a little.
“Are you cooking?” Janus asked evenly with a raised eyebrow.
“Roasted pork stuffed with spinach, prosciutto, and gruyère served with crispy potatoes, green beans, honey-glazed carrots, and cranberry sauce,” Roman announced proudly. Virgil and Janus shared a lovingly exasperated smile with each other from the couch. Patton grimaced at the mention of carrots, and he didn’t know what those ‘stuffed’ words meant, and he didn’t like the sound of them.
“Yes, then I believe I will. Is the spinach—”
“The flavour is well-hidden, yes. Just a few more greens to get away with the sides without a lecture from dad. I also picked up shortbread cookies for a little dessert. I want sweet things today.” Roman lifted his arm to display the grocery bags with a grin before heading into the kitchen.
“Dad’s still going to want to kill you for the fancy ham and cheese,” Virgil called after him. Patton didn’t like the sound of that either, and he didn’t remember Roman mentioning those. He didn’t follow what was happening for dinner.
“It’s only just enough to hide the spinach. He married me, he can deal with my refined palette,” Roman replied airily and started pulling out the things he needed to make dinner, feeling pleased with himself. The more they talked about dinner, the more scared and confused Patton got about it.
Virgil just laughed quietly at that, keeping a careful hold on Patton. Janus smiled and reclined back into the couch. “He’s going to spoil me for my own cooking one day,” Janus joked mildly.
“We’re all going to grow up into being food snobs. When we’re living off of instant noodles in college, we’ll be shoplifting fancy things to class it up, so we can stomach it,” Virgil joked back, leaning into the couch again.
“No shoplifting boys, you can always come home to get spoiled on my cooking even worse,” Roman called from the kitchen playfully. Patton gripped Mrs. Bunnyface harder. He didn’t like that word. That was a mean word, but he hadn’t heard it used like that before. Patton thought that spoiled food is food that had gone bad.
“You’re not gonna eat gross food, are you?” Patton looked up at Virgil, asking quietly.
Virgil laughed and ruffled Patton’s hair with his hand. “No, Pat, it’s good food,” he reassured Patton lightheartedly.
“Spoiled for something means you have so many fancy things that the regular things aren’t as good anymore,” Janus explained, crossing his leg on the other side of the couch and leaning on the couch arm.
“Oh. Can he do that?” Patton looked at Janus with concern. He didn’t understand how that worked.
“They’re good at it, if anything,” Virgil said lightheartedly and wrapped his other arm around to give Patton a hug. “It’s not a bad thing, Pat,” he added when he didn’t see Patton’s face un-scrunch from the idea.
   “It sounds bad,” Patton muttered.
“It just means having standards,” Janus said flippantly, tossing out his hand. The motion knocked some hair loose from his newsboy cap, and he tucked it back in carefully.
“Having high standards sucks sometimes,” Virgil said bitterly, sinking back into the couch.
“’Tis better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all,” Roman quoted from the kitchen, still busying himself on preparing this large dinner.
“Hard pass,” Janus muttered, and Virgil snickered at that. Patton was completely lost, chewing on his thumb, while he tried to turn his focus back to the TV. He didn’t know what Phineas and Ferb were up to anymore, either. Patton felt funny.
“Virge?” Patton muttered, holding his stomach.
“What’s up?” Virgil looked down at him, frowning when he saw his face.
“Can you get me water?” Patton whispered, not wanting Roman to know or to be alone in the kitchen with him.
“’Course, Patty.” Virgil kissed Patton’s hair and got up from the couch. “Hold on to Mrs. Bunnyface for me tight, okay?” He pointed to the rabbit and headed to the kitchen to get Patton water in one of his no-spill cups.
“Are you alright, Patton? If you’re worried about what we were talking about, we were just playing,” Janus said softly, throwing a glance at Virgil as he passed.
“Mm-hm,” Patton hummed, keeping his grip on his doll as Virgil told him to. He pulled up his feet onto the couch all the way and wrapped up around his bunny. Something blew up in the cartoon, attracting Janus’s interest, but Patton just kept brushing his fingers against Mrs. Bunnyface’s fur and looking at the floor.
Virgil came back with the water, bumping Patton’s hand with it. “Great job, bud, you kept Mrs. Bunnyface nice and safe,” he said softly. Patton looked at him with wide eyes and accepted the water, and Virgil sat back down on the couch next to him, wrapping his arm back over his little shoulders.
Patton drank tentatively, holding the cup on his lap next to the rabbit plush when he was done. “Sorry, Janus, I think I need to stay with Patton,” Virgil whispered over to him.
“It’s a non-issue, Virgil, I actually enjoy Phineas and Ferb.” Janus waved him off, looking bored all the same.
“You’re just idea-mining for good pranks, aren’t you,” Virgil teased.
Janus shot Virgil a mischievous grin. “That, too.” His face reset back to neutral quickly. “But I’m not at home and haven’t been doing schoolwork, so this is preferable.”
“Oh, shoot. Homework, I almost forgot. Dad can help us with any math after dinner, but we still have an English assignment,” Virgil hissed, sounding concerned. Patton turned back to the screen, watching the colours and hoping that didn’t mean Virgil was going to leave.
“I’ll get you the textbook, you can read the passage out loud, and I’ll come up with some answers. We can figure it out from there,” Janus suggested, reaching over the side of the couch for his backpack.
“You also just don’t want to have to read it yourself,” Virgil accused playfully, accepting the textbook that Janus passed over to him and adjusting his arm around Patton after he set it on his lap.
“What must you think of me, Virgil.” Janus held his hand to his chest in mock offense, and Virgil stuck out his tongue. Janus returned the expression with an additional sneer before flipping out a notebook to take notes. “Page 148 is the start of the story.”
Virgil sighed and flipped the pages to the correct one with one hand and put up his feet on the couch to hold up the textbook to read. “North Richmond Street, being blind, was a quiet street except at the hour when the Christian Brothers' School set the boys free,” Virgil started to read out loud.
“Boys, is this okay for Patton to hear?” Roman called out from the kitchen, accompanied by the sounds of his knife on the cutting board as he prepped the food.
“It’s about a boy who likes a girl who doesn’t like him back, Mr. Sanders,” Janus let him know right away.
“Yeah, and the language is stupid flowery, it should be okay. I’ll stop if it sounds dicey.”
“Ah, wonderful. You know I worry. Thank you boys for getting your homework done, too. Would you like to sneak some milk and cookies before Logan gets home?” Roman offered temptingly. Virgil and Janus shared a grin at each other, and Janus hopped up from the couch to head into the kitchen for their spoils.
“Why we would never, Mr. Sanders. Which cabinet has Patton’s cups in them, again?” Janus asked as he entered the kitchen.
“Oh, of course you wouldn’t. To the right, bottom shelf.” Roman pointed with the knife he was using. “Cookies are still in the bag, two each I think is plenty for you two, but just give Patton one with less milk, he has a small appetite. Use a plate so you don’t get crumbs all over the couch. Store-bought is very crumbly.” He smiled conspiratorially and got back to chopping.
Janus pulled out the cookies, looking around the kitchen in surprise when the cookie package was the only thing left in the bag. “Did you already get the pork in the oven?”
“I had to learn to be fast to get away with the things I want to cook, didn’t I?” Roman winked at Janus, who smiled at that. He doled out a shared plate for himself and Virgil, and got a smaller one for Patton, and returned to the living room. “Bring the dishes back in twenty minutes tops so that I can clean them off, and he’ll be none the wiser,” Roman requested after Janus, who’s smile only grew. Janus liked Roman’s style sometimes.
Everyone in the living room took a cookie break, including Patton, who was a little confused to get the single cookie on the plate from Janus and a half-filled cup of milk. He liked shortbread cookies, and it helped him feel a little better. He was able to focus back on the cartoon, and Janus returned their dishes to the kitchen hastily to an extremely pleased Roman before he settled back down on the couch and picked up the notebook again with a “Proceed.”
Virgil rolled his eyes and grabbed the open textbook off the couch and returned it to his legs to read. “An uninhabited house of two stories stood at the blind end, detached from its neighbours in a square ground,” Virgil continued on with the story, and they worked on their homework together.
When Logan got home, he was pleased to see the boys doing—well, perhaps arguing over—their homework and Patton accounted for along with them. Whatever Roman was making hit his nose, and it smelled utterly enticing, so he went to go kiss his husband to thank him for all of his hard work in the kitchen before he did anything else. Roman was delighted to see him as usual, making the long staff meeting feel much farther away with each kiss. He headed off to shower after a quick check up for the amount of time he had left until dinner was ready in the meantime.
Things were much quieter after they finished answering the questions for their English homework. Virgil’s notebook remained open to copy Janus’s answers after dinner, and they left out their math textbook to get help from Logan after dinner and reclined on the couch. Virgil had checked to see if Patton wanted to play outside, but he didn’t feel up to it, so they just kept watching TV, though Virgil and Janus were also partially on their phones.
“Dinner’s ready! Come eat, boys!” Roman announced proudly, now singing about how food was best fresh. He set up Patton’s booster in a chair and started serving him, though he substituted out the carrots for a dinner roll.
“Thank you again, love,” Logan said fondly, though now that he could see the whole meal out on the table, he blinked a few times. “Isn’t this… excessive?” He asked as kindly as he could manage, though his concern was clear.
“There’s spinach in that small pork roast, darling,” Roman said airily.
Logan looked at the slices in the roasting pan, seeing the contents. “That’s not just spinach.”
“Young tongues don’t find spinach quite as good as we do.” Roman shrugged, brushing off his concern.
“Yeah, dad, it’s kind of gross unless you smother it in cheese or dressing,” Virgil agreed, walking into the kitchen holding Patton’s hand, then helping him up on the chair.
“I likely wouldn’t eat it without the frills, either, Mr. Sanders,” Janus stated, backing up Roman. Virgil set up Patton in his seat and sat next to him, Janus sitting on the other side of Virgil.
“There are plenty of frills here already,” Logan pointed out, eying the spread.
“Oh, hush up and eat.” Roman kissed Logan’s head and handed him a plate to serve himself, passing off plates to everyone else at the table quickly.
“It looks awesome, papa,” Virgil said excitedly, taking a fork to grab a slice of pork from the roast right away. Roman sat down, absolutely beaming and happy to enjoy exactly what he’d been craving since he started cooking.
“Thank you so much, Mr. Sanders,” Janus added, jostling Virgil playfully to reach for food himself.
Patton looked at the plate with concern. He didn’t have the carrots Roman mentioned, but… He picked up his fork tentatively and poked at a green bean. It looked bad. “Make sure you eat your meat, Patton,” Roman said softly. Patton nodded and looked at it. It looked okay? He watched Virgil take a bite, and he seemed to like it.
“You’re right, the prosciutto and gruyère are way better than stupid bacon and cheddar,” Virgil said happily, looking incredibly mischievous.
“Roman,” Logan said flatly, staring him down. Roman shot Virgil a quick bitter look before turning to Logan with a soft smile.
“What, I only bought just enough for the meal, it wasn’t much,” Roman defended himself and Virgil snickered softly. “Try it, trust me.” Logan took a tentative bite, clearly enjoying it as well. He deflated slightly and nodded to Roman, motioning that he conceded the victory to him. “Thank you,” Roman said smugly and leaned over to kiss him on the cheek before digging in himself.
Patton watched them all eat, and they all looked like they were enjoying it, so he took a bite of the cut-up pieces of roast pork himself. As soon as the filling hit his tongue, his mouth hurt badly. It felt really wrong. He tried to chew it, but it just made him sicker. After some fighting, he swallowed it, but that feeling only made him feel worse. Patton put down his fork and held his stomach.
Logan glanced over to check on Patton, seeing he had barely touched anything. “Patton, is something wrong?” Logan asked softly while Virgil and Janus bickered about their English homework again.
“N-no,” Patton responded, not wanting to get in trouble.
“Then please eat, Patton. You don’t have to finish the plate, but as much as you can. You’ve had one of those rolls before if you’re concerned about unfamiliar food,” Logan told him, pointing with his fork to the roll. Patton looked at the roll and reached out for it, taking a bite. He didn’t know what those other words were, but he liked the roll. It made his head hurt, though.
“It’s not too hard, Patton, just eat what you can and let us know what you can’t,” Roman reassured him. Patton frowned. ‘Not hard’ is one of those lies adults tell. They mean it’s hard, but they want him to do it anyway. Then they get mad.
Patton paused, staring at the roll. Did that mean all the food hurt? Was this a punishment? Why were they making him eat food that hurt? Did he have to eat it because it hurt and he’s been bad? Patton put down his fork and roll as the tears welled up, hopping out of his dining chair to run to his room. Everyone watched him rush off in surprise, the kitchen going silent.
“Patton?” Virgil asked, hearing a door close on the other side of the living room. Logan and Roman got up to follow, while Janus and Virgil tried to figure out what the hell just happened.
“Do you think we were arguing too much?” Virgil asked quietly.
“I doubt it, he didn’t mind us arguing on the couch earlier. He stayed under your arm the whole time and watched TV like he didn’t care,” Janus replied softly. Virgil looked at Patton’s plate, but the only thing even touched was the roast pork.
“Crap, I should probably go in there. I think Logan and Roman scare him more than he lets on,” Virgil whispered. “Sorry about this,” he added, getting up out of his seat.
“More for me.” Janus just shrugged, taking a big bite of potato. Virgil just rolled his eyes and went to Patton’s bedroom. Patton started openly bawling right as he exited the kitchen, so Virgil picked up the pace.
“Hey, uh, dads?” Virgil got their attention at the door and motioned with his head. They looked at him, both wearing completely panicked expressions.
“We need to handle this, Virgil,” Logan said just loud enough to be heard over the sobbing child.
“I know, maybe I should, though?” Virgil said warily.
   “Virgil, we appreciate it, but—”
“I think you guys scare him!” Virgil blurted out, pushing his way into the bedroom anyway. “Please?” He sat down on the floor next to Patton and pulled him in, who fell into Virgil’s chest immediately, even though he’d shied away from the other two before Virgil got here. Roman and Logan looked at each other, deciding what was best for both of their wards, and Roman took Logan’s hand, pulling Logan out of the room.
“There could be a real problem, Roman,” Logan protested in a hushed voice.
“And I don’t think he’s saying anything until he calms down, honey. Let’s get back to dinner and Virgil will let us know, alright?” Roman said emphatically, looking at Virgil, who nodded in agreement. They both left the room and shut the door behind them, returning to the kitchen.
Virgil felt incredibly out of his depth, but considering Patton was balled up in a corner, he was probably the only person here who could even help. He wrapped his arms around Patton and rubbed his back, and Patton gripped onto Virgil’s hoodie as he wailed. His hoodie was getting absolutely soaked with snot, he was sure, but Virgil had no idea what to say at all, since he had no idea what was so terrible about dinner that he had to work with.
Patton just kept crying and hiccuping, and sometimes he’d let out broken words that Virgil couldn’t possibly understand, so Virgil just opted to let him cry himself out. Virgil couldn’t solve the problem right now, even if he wanted to. He just tried to be silently supportive the best he knew how.
Eventually, the crying broke down into what seemed like a painful fit of hiccups, since it shook his whole tiny body when they struck. Virgil smiled sadly and told him, “Take as deep a breath as you can, and then breathe in more. And it’s going to hurt a little, but it’ll make the hiccups go away.”
Patton stared at him while he processed that and did as asked, breathing in. He didn’t know how to breathe in more after he did as much as he could, so Virgil showed him by example, exaggerating the action. It made him a little light-headed, but Patton’s hiccups stopped a moment later. Virgil smiled and rubbed his back a few times, pulling him up to sit on his lap and hold on to him better. Patton gripped at Virgil’s hoodie again and leaned his head against Virgil’s chest, struggling through a pained yawn.
“Are you okay, Patton?” Virgil asked quietly, not wanting to hurt Patton’s head or scare him any further.
   “Yeah,” Patton muttered.
“Then what freaked you out so much?” Virgil whispered, and Patton sniffled hard, another tear rolling down his cheek.
“I don’ wanna be punished,” he replied pitifully.
“What do you think you’re getting punished for?” Virgil felt even more lost than before, and Patton balled up again on Virgil’s lap, crying a little more. Virgil hugged him and swayed lightly, hoping it would help.
“I-I don’ know why,” Patton choked out.
“What makes you think you’re being punished then?” Virgil followed up, not sure what was happening. They had had a very low-key day up until now.
“It hurts, and they were telling me I gotta,” Patton sniffled pitifully.
“What hurts, Pat?” Virgil kept him held close, making sure Patton felt safe, but Patton started crying again. Okay, he’d have to sleuth it out himself. “Spending time with them?” Patton shook his head into Virgil’s chest. “Me fighting with Janus?” He suggested guiltily. Patton shook his head again, letting out a whine this time. Okay, probably farther. “… Eating dinner?” Virgil guessed the last thing he could think of, and Patton nodded, crying again. “Was it too hot?” Patton shook his head once more. The food itself? “Pat, that food isn’t a punishment. We didn’t know it hurt you. We can just get you something else to eat, it’s okay.”
Patton kept crying a little longer, and Virgil just tried to rub his back a little this time. He needed to change his hoodie and shirt at this point, and it felt gross, but he could wait it out for Patton a little bit longer. He shifted back into sniffles much quicker this time, loosening up his grip on Virgil’s hoodie with an exhausted expression on his face. “I’m not in trouble?” Patton finally asked, his voice creaking from his poor, worn-out throat.
“You’re not in trouble. Are you still hungry?” Virgil asked with concern. He really hadn’t eaten much, and he was already so small. Patton nodded wearily, and Virgil tried to remember what snacks he’d seen Patton eat without complaint these last few days. He’d had applesauce, crackers, a few different fruits, rice, and french fries. So he could possibly eat some of what was made. “Okay, how about I put you together something?”
Patton just looked at him for a moment before nodding. “Cool. Wait for me in here, I need to go change, and I’ll be right back,” Virgil requested and kissed Patton’s hair. Patton nodded weakly again, and Virgil gently moved Patton off his lap and got up to change his hoodie and shirt and wash off his chest before he went near food again. He decided not to look down and surveil the carnage, and instead just toss them in his hamper and grab a shirt off his clean clothes pile before washing off in the bathroom.
Virgil was back quickly, and Patton hadn’t moved, just leaned up against the wall in the bedroom. “I’m sorry that was so bad, Pat,” Virgil murmured, leaning down to pick him up. “Let’s go wash your face first before we put more food in it.” He carried Patton to the bathroom and set Patton up on his stool, and he sluggishly washed off his face in the sink while Virgil texted Logan and Roman that he’d tell them what was wrong after dinner but to just let him be when they came back. He didn’t want to spook Patton back out of the kitchen. Virgil helped him dry off and Patton held up his arms again, so Virgil just carried him right into the kitchen and onto his booster chair, shooting Logan and Roman a meaningful look.
Logan was about to start, but Virgil held up a finger to his mouth and pulled out his phone, and pointed to it before scooping everything but the cranberry sauce and potatoes off the plate and onto his own. Logan made a frustrated sound, but Roman hushed him, holding up his phone screen. Virgil took a deep breath to try to calm down, getting an apple and a banana and prepping them for Patton’s plate instead. He wasn’t sure it was enough food to be a meal, but they’d figure that out if he even finished this stuff. Patton looked up at Virgil with wet eyes, glancing down at the plate with worry and back up at him again.
“These other two might be okay, and I saw you didn’t try them yet,” Virgil said reassuringly.
“Virgil, there’s no protein there,” Logan whispered. Right. Okay. What was a protein that Patton had eaten recently? Virgil thought hard for a moment before remembering a childhood staple and pulling it out of the pantry. He dished out a scoop of smooth peanut butter on the plate with an apologetic shrug to Logan, capping it off and putting it away again.
“Oh, apples and peanut butter were one of my favourites as a kid,” Janus hummed, trying to cheer Patton up a bit. Patton frowned, pushing his food around on the plate.
“I jazz them up a bit more now, but I have them after school sometimes. Pat, if anything else hurts, just tell me and we’ll figure something else out. But your stomach might hurt a little from what you already ate, so start with the banana and some water to settle it, okay?” Virgil suggested softly, sitting back down in his seat. Thankfully, his food hadn’t gone cold by now, so he still got to eat. Logan and Roman looked extremely disconcerted by his comment, but he needed energy from his awesome dinner to deal with it.
Patton had some water and reached for the banana slices, just opting to eat with his hands this time, and he ate slowly, but he did at least eat. Virgil breathed a sigh of relief, digging into his delicious dinner now. That stressed him the hell out, but he made it through it. Hopefully, he could deal with the extremely stressful conversation later, too, but they were letting him eat his dinner in peace for now.
Janus jostled him and mouthed ‘you okay?’ at him, and Virgil nodded. “I’m fine. Dad, can we get help with our math homework after dinner?” Virgil looked up, asking through a mouth full of now slightly-less-than-crispy roasted potatoes.
“Swallow before talking, Virgil,” Roman protested tiredly, though he did at least seem slightly amused.
   “After we—”
“Yeah, dad, after I explain. Just let us eat dinner, okay?” Virgil requested, but Logan didn’t seem satisfied with that. Virgil tried to think of how to word this without Patton knowing what he was saying. “There are a… selection of topics I would need to verbalize… that might be distressing for… present company. Anything consumed is better than nothing.” As far as Virgil was concerned, there was no way he could figure out to say ‘he needs to see a doctor’ without using any words that Patton would understand and Logan would comprehend.
“Oh, nice,” Janus congratulated him impishly. Logan and Roman stared at Virgil for a moment, but Virgil just turned to check on Patton instead. He had grabbed a potato medallion to try, and he didn’t like biting into it. Virgil picked up another medallion and took the skin off and handed Patton his fork to eat the soft inside, who tried this suspiciously but did at least go for another bite. Virgil wasn’t sure what was different from fries, but knew better than to question it and just wanted to make sure Patton ate something so that his parents wouldn’t have a conniption. Roman watched curiously but didn’t comment.
After a pause, Logan finally responded. “I anticipate the situation warrants the lack of vegetal variety?” He asked and Virgil rolled his eyes while Patton chewed, looking mildly confused but much too tired to emote much.
“It may very well be as such.” Virgil didn’t know any other way to disguise a plain ‘probably’, and Janus snickered at his statement. Patton looked at Virgil oddly, but Virgil just smiled at him, seeing that he made progress on the other roasted potatoes by taking off the skin himself. “See? Thanks for trying, Pat. I know it was scary,” Virgil congratulated him softly, which utterly melted Roman’s heart, and he covered his mouth trying to hide his reaction, but Janus noticed and snickered.
Virgil just huffed and elbowed him, but he didn’t care, leaning over to tease Virgil behind his hand. “A little young to be a teen mom, aren’t we?”
“I’m a better mother than you’ll ever be,” Virgil whispered back playfully.
“You’re certainly right about that, but you’ll see who’s your daddy with the next prank I cooked up,” Janus whispered back again.
“If you came up with it from Phineas and Ferb, I’m not that worried,” Virgil sassed back under his breath.
“We’ll see,” Janus replied cryptically. Roman looked at Janus oddly. “You’re a wonderful cook, Mr. Sanders. Do you think you could show me a few tricks on a night when we don't have homework?” Janus asked enthusiastically, distracting Roman right away.
“It would be my honour, Janus.” Roman beamed, and Virgil snickered behind his hand between bites of pork roast. Patton made more progress on his meal, eating slowly but surely without further complaint, so at least the stuff Virgil came up with as a substitute worked. Patton took an apple slice and curiously dipped it into the cranberry sauce and greedily went for another scoop, so it was going well now.
‘Suck up,’ Virgil mouthed at Janus, jostling him slightly.
“You’re just jealous of my prowess,” Janus leaned in and informed him of his deficiencies under his breath.
“Boys, why does this happen almost every dinner?” Logan asked rhetorically and rolled his eyes, no longer as concerned as earlier now that Patton was eating.
“You know what it’s like to be a teen boy, darling, they’re just having fun,” Roman said cheerily, chuckling a little. Janus grinned and held up his fist for a fist bump from Virgil, who returned it right away, sharing in his victory. Roman hummed delightedly at the friendly expression, and Logan scooped some more green beans onto Roman’s plate with a smile. Roman was mock aghast at, pouting out his lip.
   “I suppose I do.”

“Makes me very hnnnnng” is just such a vibe™ so fucking valid
“No, I need orange pieces and not yellow, Patty,” Virgil said absentmindedly. Patton pursed his lips and dug around in the container more. Patton pulled out a new piece and put it in front of Virgil and looked to Virgil hopefully. “That’s perfect,” Virgil smiled and ruffled Patton’s hair with a smile. “Do you want to help me with this?” Virgil asked, handing Patton two pieces stuck together that he couldn’t get apart. “There’s a little tool in the bin for separating these two,” Virgil explained.
“’Kay,” Patton said and nodded with determination.
“Did you finish the math homework, Virgil? I’m stuck on the second to last question,” Janus said plainly, more focused on their build than the question.
“I didn’t finish it yet. If you stay for dinner, dad’ll probably help us afterword and give you a ride home,” Virgil offered. “He seems to enjoy doing it for some reason,” Virgil shrugged, but he felt proud of his dad’s dependability.
“I do like Roman’s cooking. It’s his night, right?” Janus asked, interested in the prospect.
“Yeah, papa’s making some fancy chicken thing I think and something plainer for Patty,” Virgil replied, clicking more pieces into place.
“I did it!” Patton pipped up, holding the two pieces up with excitement.
“Awesome job, little dude. How about you put them right here?” Virgil pointed with a piece to the spot the guide wanted them. Patton nodded happily and placed them on the build. He struggled a little with aligning but felt very satisfied with himself when he succeeded. “Do you want to look for white pieces or place pieces?” Virgil asked with a soft smile.
“Keep digging! I like the noise,” Patton said buoyantly.
“It is a delightful sound,” Janus hummed in agreement. Virgil’s phone rang, and he leaned back to fish it out of his skinny jeans and pressed the screen.
“Yo,” Virgil answered and paused, waiting for the response. “Woah, El, slow down,” Virgil said, holding up his palm. Patton looked up in confusion. “Not you, little guy,” Virgil put his hand over the bottom of the phone and whispered. He nodded pointlessly as he listened. Patton seemed satisfied and returned to his quest for pieces. “Son of a… Uh, hold on. Pat’s right here and I probably shouldn’t answer that next to him. Uh, Janus, sorry, would you mind keeping an eye on him for me?” Virgil asked pleadingly.
“Is it more…” Janus trailed off, glancing to Patton.
“Yeah. It is. Patty doesn’t need to hear this stuff,” Virgil said, tilting his head towards Patton.
“Go ahead. You know my opinion on the subject,” Janus agreed with a nod.
“Yeah, I’ll let them know,” Virgil nodded back and got up from his spot. He walked off into his room and closed the door behind him. Janus looked over to Patton who was animatedly digging through the bucket for white pieces for the build they were creating.
“We need the 2 by 6 pieces in white,” Janus said, pointing to the guide, tapping at the picture. Patton narrowed his eyes, trying to focus on the guide, but he looked confused. Janus dug through the small pile of white pieces and pulled out the required piece. “This one,” He said, handing it over to Patton. Patton nodded with determination and went digging.
Janus leaned and glanced over to Virgil’s room curiously, but kept building. The bin of blocks said it was 4+ and he wasn’t sure why Patton needed watching, but it wasn’t unlike Virgil to be overly cautious. Patton hummed happily while he pulled out the pieces he could find. After a pulling out more and a few fruitless digs, Patton shifted to dig through the white pieces he picked out on the table to separate the 2 by 6 pieces. While Patton was trying to put back a piece into the bin, he knocked over his cup of juice. The lid popped off, and it dumped onto the table. Janus shot up quickly and ran to get a towel.
When Janus returned and started wiping it up, Patton was strangely frozen. Janus blinked in confusion a few times and finished wiping everything clean. The spill wasn’t major, though he had to dry a few wet pieces. It barely got on the floor, which was blessedly easy to clean. Janus folded up the towel and sat back down on the floor. Patton was still fixed in place, staring blankly ahead.
“Um, It’s all right? Everything is fine,” Janus said consolingly. Patton’s lip quivered a few times before he backed up into the couch and balled up tight, pulling his limbs to himself tight. Patton started shaking and a small sob broke out. “Patton? It’s… okay. It was just some juice,” Janus said, turning to face Patton and holding out his hand. “Patton? It’s really alright, I promise,” Janus pleased, but Patton kept crying. “Can you tell me what’s wrong, then?” He implored gently.
“I made a mess and I’m gonna get punished!” Patton sobbed into his legs and held on tight, rocking slightly as he wept.
“Who do you think will hurt you?” Janus asked curiously. He wasn’t sure where this was coming from. Patton cried for a moment longer before responding.
“P-parents,” Patton hiccuped as he replied, rubbing his face against his knees.
“Your parents aren’t here. I won’t tell them,” Janus said. “No one will hurt you, I promise,” Janus moved closer and spoke softly to Patton.
“They’ll find out,” Patton sobbed, shaking his head.
“We’ll hide all the evidence, okay? How about I wash the towel and refill your drink?” Janus offered. Patton looked up at Janus weakly and blinked a few times.
   “That’s not right,” He sniffled.
“If it makes you happy, then it’s a good thing. In my opinion, anyway,” Janus said resolutely. “No one will hurt you and no one will know, I won’t tell,” Janus reassured him. Patton rubbed his faced on his sleeve and nodded, and Janus hastily got up to take the towel and cup to the kitchen. He rinsed out the rag and chucked it in the laundry room to dry and wiped off the cup and refilled it halfway. Janus put the cup back on the table right where it was. Patton smiled feebly and another little tear fell.
“You think it’ll work?” Patton asked weakly.
“I know it will work. You won’t be in any trouble and I’ll never tell a soul,” Janus said resolutely, miming zipping his lips and tossing away the key. Patton smiled weakly and crawled back over to the table. He grabbed it and drank a sip before putting it back on the table. Patton nearly rubbed his nose on his sleeve, but Janus quickly got a tissue and held it in his face. Patton took it with a small nod and blew his nose. He rubbed this eyes and yawned lightly. He slumped tiredly and returned to digging through the pile, but he struggled to pick pieces. Janus frowned and continued on the build, though he was moving slower and distractedly, casting glances at Patton.
“Ugh,” Virgil groaned and came out of his bedroom. “That… guy,” Virgil ran his hand through his hair in frustration. “El listened this time, I think,” Virgil said, feeling unsure.
He paused where he stood on the way back to the table, glancing at Janus’s face in confusion. Janus switched to looking disaffected swiftly and shrugged. Virgil chewed his lip and hummed in disbelief for a moment and returned to his spot at the coffee table. He turned to Patton and examined his face, which was puffy and his eyes were red and his heart stopped. “Patty, are you okay?” Virgil blurted out in worry.
“He’s just tired. Right, Patton?” Janus said cooly and Patton looked up to Janus. Janus winked and Patton nodded slowly, nervously chewing his lip.
“Oh, buddy, let’s switch to a movie so you can lay on the couch,” Virgil said softly and Patton nodded with a small pout. Virgil scooped the loose pieces into the lid of the bin and laid it on top of the container, shifting the build carefully over into it and move the bin out of the way before picking up the remote and tossing it to Janus. Virgil stood up and leaned down to pick up Patton. He paused with his arms out and waited for Patton to nod before scooping him up and sitting on the couch with him.
“What tickles your fancy, Patton?” Janus said, turning on the TV and moving to sit next to Virgil. Patton chewed his lip and looked away.
“Would Mrs. Bunnyface like Ducktales? Or maybe Sponge Bob?” Virgil asked softly and pulled the throw around Patton, who nestled in Virgil’s lap, feeling much better.
“She wants to watch Ducktales,” Patton provided. “She’s in bed, though,” Patton said quietly.
“I’ll get her,” Janus offered and got up to grab the doll hurriedly after starting the cartoon. He hurried back and got the doll off of Patton’s bed, rushing to get back to hand it to him before the intro finished. Janus slid on to the couch and handed Patton the bunny as he sat down. Patton took Mrs. Bunnyface gratefully and pulled the doll close. Virgil gave Patton a little affectionate squeeze and kissed his hair before leaning into the couch.
“Do you mind if Janus gets closer, little guy?” Virgil asked softly. Patton shook his head and kept his gaze on the screen. “Pat says it’s okay, come on,” Virgil suggested, and Janus rolled his eyes and shifted nearer, leaning a little against Virgil.
“Mrs. Bunnyface likes you, Janus,” Patton said quietly.
“Oh,” Janus breathed. “Thank you,” He whispered.

A Whole Castle (The First Short for New Readers) (The Playlist)
Words: 1,968 Warnings: References to bad home life, Apologizing for someone else's bad behaviour, bad mental health Characters: Virgil, Janus (Dee), Elliot, Mitchell Universe: Whole Castle Genre: Teen Drama Additional Tags: Trans issues, Therapy Heads up: Janus uses Dee and she/her in the first half.
“El, he’s a freaking douche nozzle,” Virgil groaned, running his hand through his hair and kicking his feet under the lunch table.
“I just didn’t explain what happened right. He apologized! You guys just don’t know him like I do. Mitchell’s really great,” Elliot defended themself, gripping at the table.
“Yes, he just treats you so well,” Dee retorted sarcastically.
“He’s just having a bad day. He had another fight with his dad,” Elliot insisted, looking at them emphatically.
“Seems like he sure has lots of bad days.” Virgil rolled his eyes, kicking the support bar and rattling the table.
“Virgil fights with his dads every day,” Dee huffed, looking pointedly at Elliot.
“Virgil chooses to fight with his dads, that’s different.” Elliot crossed their arms. Virgil threw up the horns and shrugged, not disagreeing. “And the last time Dee got in a fight with her dad, she lit Virgil’s homework on fire,” Elliot added.
“I regret nothing.” Dee grinned while Virgil shot her a filthy look.
“I’m just saying being friends with Mitchell is a choice, and if he makes you feel like shit when he’s having a bad day, you don’t have to freaking stay friends. It’s been what, a few weeks since you met him?” Virgil said, holding out his hands on the table.
“I feel stronger around him, okay? He makes me feel like I can be who I want unapologetically, just like him,” Elliot insisted. Dee frowned and looked down at the table, gripping the bench. Virgil pulled his lips to the side and stopped kicking, considering Elliot. “I don’t think you guys get it,” they added bitterly.
“Fine, I’ll drop it.” Virgil sighed heavily, glancing over to Dee, who looked like she was thinking hard about something.
“Thank you. Why don’t you come out with us this weekend? We’re going bowling. He’s just really grumpy, that’s all,” Elliot offered, leaning forward. Dee and Virgil shared a glance for a moment and Elliot bit his lip.
“Sorry, I killed my allowance for this month.” Virgil shook his head. “I’ll come to watch you bowl if Mitchell is willing to drop me off at home, though,” he added.
“I don’t have enough to bowl, but we could play in the arcade a little if Mitchell would also drop me off,” Dee suggested, sitting up straighter.
“Mitchell always asks for gas money…” Elliot trailed off, dropping their hands to their lap.
“Ah.” Dee hummed, shrugging slightly. “That’s fair I suppose, but I’d rather not come just to sit around.” She shook her head and leaned back on her hands.
“Maybe another time, El,” Virgil suggested, looking contrite.
“He’s really funny and interesting, I swear.” Elliot leaned forward on the table, looking at the pair hopefully.
“Yeah, yeah.” Virgil waved them off. “I trust you that he’s grumpy and stuff, I can relate to that.” He put his head down on the table.
“You’re always grumpy.” Dee shoved at him with a smirk.
“It’s my birthright,” Virgil replied blithely.
“Does that make you a douchenozzle?” Elliot asked, arching an eyebrow.
“He’s an entire douchebag, not just the nozzle,” Dee teased, shoving at him again.
“Why do we tolerate you again?” Elliot joked, grinning at Virgil.
Virgil groaned and rolled his head to the side before sitting up and examining both of them. “Mutually assured destruction for me and Dee, but honestly I don’t know why you tolerate me,” he realized, looking at Elliot and leaning on both hands.
“It’s true, I’ll destroy you.” Dee grinned and leaned on her arm with a smug look.
“Because under all that, I think you’re a really nice guy. You let me copy your homework and saved my ass twice from bullies,” Elliot explained, motioning towards Virgil. Virgil just stared at them for a moment.
“What was I supposed to let them maliciously misgender you?” Virgil flailed up his hand and rolled his eyes.
“I think you definitely shouldn’t have stood on that guy’s neck until he said it right… at least by the school’s rules anyway,” Dee said, sounding pleased.
“How much trouble did you get in for that?” Elliot asked curiously.
“I’m still grounded, but Roman mysteriously bought too much ice cream and gave me a whole pint to eat the next day.” Virgil smiled and chuckled a little. “I hope they’ll figure out it’s useless to ground me soon because I will absolutely do it again if anybody tries anything.” He drummed his fingers on his face.
“Virgil, don’t get expelled on my account,” Elliot pleaded in exasperation.
“Now that sounds like a plan.” Virgil hummed, looking up and kicking his feet again.
“Don’t worry about him, he’s going to do stupid things with or without you present.” Dee shrugged, waving her hand.
“I’m not as likely to get expelled as someone, say, here on scholarship,” Virgil said cheekily, looking at Dee deliberately.
“I’m sneakier than you, I’ll be fine.” Dee smirked, not concerned. “I’m coming up with my next great prank against you already.” She kicked Virgil under the table, who just glared at her in response.
“I genuinely can’t tell that you two are friends sometimes.” Elliot looked between them in confusion.
“We’re not.” They both said at once.
“Jinx,” Dee said before Virgil could even open his mouth. Dee leaned forward to look Virgil right in the eye. “Is something wrong?” She asked cruelly, and Virgil could only flip her off. “Ah, blissful silence.” She hummed happily, turning to Elliot. “You were saying?”
“You respect her enough to actually shut up when she jinxes you,” Elliot pointed out, and was also flipped off by Virgil. “Don’t free him, I want to know how long he’ll hold it,” they smiled and turned away from Virgil, facing Dee instead. “So how are things?”
— 🏰 —
“Hey, if anybody understands, it’ll be Elliot,” Virgil said reassuringly, putting his hand on Janus’s back.
Janus looked at Virgil for a moment before sighing and checking the clock for how much time they had. “I’m mostly curious if I could come out at school without it getting back to my mom,” he admitted. “I don’t…” Janus trailed off for a moment and looked down as they walked. “I’m not tolerating it as much as I used to.”
“We can probably ask my dad his opinion on the teachers, but there’s always going to be a risk.” Virgil rubbed between his shoulder blades.
“Right.” Janus huffed, walking up to Elliot at their locker.
Elliot shoved in a few textbooks and turned around to face them. “Oh! Hey guys,” they greeted, shutting the locker. “What’s with the look? Not enough sleep?” They asked after looking Janus up and down.
“Elliot, do you remember that prank I’ve been playing on Virgil’s parents?” Janus asked, leaning against the lockers.
“Yeah, what about it? Did you get caught?” Elliot asked with concern.
“Me? Caught? Never,” Janus scoffed playfully, holding a hand to his chest. “No. It just turns out it’s not a prank, after all,” he shook his head and dropped his hand.
“As in…?” Elliot raised an eyebrow.
“Call me Dee instead of Janus and you’ll find yourself with a one-way ticket to the bottom of a staircase.” Janus crossed his arms with a grin.
“Oh!” Elliot looked surprised and laughed. “Sure. Of course.” They nodded with a smile. “How out are you?” They looked around the area.
“Friends are fine. I’m not sure about classmates and teachers, yet.” Janus waved, putting his hand on his chin. “And please no one who would out me to my family,” he added, looking nervous.
“Did you want to tell Mitchell?” Elliot asked, picking up their backpack off the floor.
“You can tell him.” Janus shrugged and crossed his arms. “I’ll tell Kai in my first period.”
Elliot’s eyes caught on Mitchell walking down the hall. “Oh, great timing. Mitchell!” They called out and waved. “We’ve got something important to tell you!”
“Not now.” Mitchell scoffed and kept walking down the hall. Janus and Virgil shared a look again as Elliot deflated. They sighed and fell against the locker with a clang.
“Let me guess, being punctual to class is really important to him,” Virgil looked at Elliot deliberately.
“He probably got into another fight with his dad. He really wants Mitchell to get a job and they’ve been fighting about money a lot lately.” Elliot rubbed their face, watching Mitchell recede down the hall.
“Dismissing you like that still isn’t cool,” Virgil reminded him.
“It’s not like it’s his fault he’s having trouble at home,” Elliot said defensively.
“I still think you need more boundaries with him,” Virgil insisted, reaching out to pat Elliot’s shoulder.
“Therapy has changed you, man,” Elliot joked, grabbing Virgil’s hand and glancing up at the clock.
“Screw that noise, I’m a person with eyeballs.” Virgil shrugged, following Elliot’s eyes to the clock.
“I miss the death threats,” Janus said jokingly, grinning at Virgil.
“Shoot, I’m going to be late soon. El, think about how you treat him compared to how he treats you. Janus, keep killing it,” Virgil pointed to both of them in turn and backed away, rushing off to class.
Janus and Elliot looked at each other and laughed. Elliot ran a hand through their hair and stood up straight. “He has a point, you know,” Janus agreed with Virgil, adjusting his backpack.
“He’s really sweet when we’re alone. And we’ve had plenty of fun all together,” Elliot stated, starting to walk towards class.
“Sure. He can be great. But if he spent half as much time defending you as you did for him, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Janus rolled his eyes and followed Elliot down the hall. “I think a good partner is a person who has such a decent baseline towards you that if your relationship degrades and they treat you half as good as they used to, it’s still tolerable. If Mitchell treated you half as well as he does now, you’d be crying.” He huffed.
“You think we’re too young to date either way.” Elliot rolled their eyes.
“That, too,” Janus agreed. “I certainly don’t want a relationship,” he said resolutely.
“That’s fine, but I enjoy being in one. And it’s not like we’re super serious, or anything,” Elliot replied blithely.
“I should hope not.” Janus scoffed. “You just started dating last month,” he reasoned.
“When you and Virgil started being friends, if you guys treated each other half as well as your baseline, you’d be trying to kill each other,” Elliot realized with a chuckle.
“Oh, I had contingency plans.” Janus smirked evilly, and Elliot laughed again. “Some people have no way to go but up, and we’ve known Mitchell for a year now and he hasn’t cleaned up his act any,” he intoned.
“Virgil’s gotten a lot of therapy and has a better home life than he used to—”
“Because he stopped harassing his parents,” Janus cut in.
“But Mitchell’s family wouldn’t ever send him and they’re just short of antagonistic with each other,” Elliot finished explaining. “I don’t think it’s fair to hold people to their circumstances.”
“I personally think it’s fair to want some decency for yourself no matter the circumstances.” Janus put his hand on Elliot’s shoulder. “It’s not your job to keep forgiving him. Virgil agreed to go to therapy and apologized to his parents of his own accord,” he reminded Elliot.
“He had to have a freaking mental breakdown first. Do you want Mitchell to do the same?” Elliot asked incredulously.
“Anyone under his kind of pressure might have one. We weren’t in the wake of Virgil’s mental breakdown. Are you going to be in Mitchell’s?” Janus urged, gripping Elliot’s shoulder before dropping his hand. Elliot stopped in the hall and the three-minute warning bell rang out.
“Shit.”

A Whole Castle
In Little Ways Part II (Part I Here)  (The First Short for New Readers) (The Playlist)
Words: 1,140 Warnings: Food Mention, Abandonment Issues Characters: Logan, Roman, Patton, Virgil Universe: Whole Castle Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Fluff Additional Tags: Patient Parenting, Roman Sanders is Extra
Logan exhaled hard as he got home from work. It was a long afternoon of meetings with teachers who pretended Logan’s plight was not their own. Why scholars couldn’t agree that each department had its struggles was baffling. He rubbed his face and set down his briefcase and kicked off his shoes at the rack.
“Dad, dad, dad, dad!” Virgil came rushing up to him as soon as she shut the door. “Janus just got a new game, can I go? Please? Can you watch Pat?” He pleaded hurriedly, jogging on the spot.
“Virgil, you know I don’t like you running across the highway,” Logan huffed, shaking his head.
“I’ll take my scooter! It’s just two lanes. Janus does it all the time. The sun’s up, drivers will see me! Please!” Virgil shot back, gripping Logan’s arm and shaking it lightly.
“The game doesn’t have sexual content or gratuitous violence?” Logan raised an eyebrow at him. He always had trouble saying no to Virgil whenever he was this excited.
“No, it’s a multi-player JRPG, you get to ride dragons, please!” Virgil sounded desperate. Logan would never understand Virgil’s fascination with these things.
“Fine, go ahead. Please be careful. One of us will pick you up, just call when you’re done or we’ll get you before dinner. Only one soda,” Logan held up a finger and conceded emphatically.
“Deal! Thanks, dad! Love you!” Virgil pushed past Logan excitedly and headed out the front door. Logan blinked as it slammed shut. Janus usually spent him here rather than Virgil visiting him. But they didn’t have the newest game systems and Janus’s family did, so it made sense even if Logan was slightly suspicious. He hoped traffic was forgiving. The highway between the neighborhoods had light traffic, but Logan worried about either of them crossing.
Logan stepped in and headed into the kitchen to grab a drink before checking on Patton in his room. Patton looked concerned, scribbling hard on the paper in front of him with one hand and his rabbit doll in the other.
“Is everything alright, Patton?” Logan inquired gently. Patton looked up to him and sighed, not responding in any manner. He glanced sadly at Logan before looking down and gripping at his shorts. “Can I come in?” Patton shook his head. “Then would you like to come out?” Logan suggested and stepped out of the doorway to give Patton room. Patton sat motionless for a moment before he nodded and got up. Logan went out into the living room and Patton climbed up near him. “Do you think Mrs. Bunnyface would want to watch Wall-E?” Logan hummed and picked up the remote and Patton cheered up a little, making his doll nod a few times.
Logan loaded up the movie and sat back. He wasn’t sure what was wrong with Patton, but he was uncomfortable and upset about something. He hoped Wall-E would cheer him up. Patton liked the little robots. Sometimes when he was cleaning up his building blocks, he’d pretend he was Wall-E. Patton leaned on the couch and pulled his feet up to watch just like Virgil does, snuggling his doll close. Logan breathed a small chuckle out through his nose. He realized what might be wrong.
“Does Mrs. Bunnyface miss Virgil?” Logan inquired quietly, trying not to look pointedly at Patton. Patton sighed and squeezed Mrs. Bunnyface.
“Yeah,” Patton breathed. “He’s comin’ back, righ’?” Patton looked up sadly at Logan.
“Yes, he’s just playing a game with his friend. He’ll be back,” Logan nodded and smiled to Patton.
“He don’t… hate… um, Mrs. Bunnyface?” Patton furrowed his eyebrows and stiffened.
“No, Patton. He loves both of you. Did it make Mrs. Bunnyface worry that he was so excited to leave today?” Logan looked down at Patton, who nodded sadly. “Just so she knows, Virgil being excited about spending time with someone else doesn’t mean he loves either of you less. He just got excited about a video game and he wasn’t abandoning you… or Mrs. Bunnyface,” Logan cleared his throat. Patton nodded in acknowledgment and loosened up slightly.
“You promise?” Patton looked up glassy-eyed to Logan.
“I promise,” Logan smiled reassuringly. “Virgil is a little obsessed with animé and dragons, the game had both it seems. He also just wants to spend time with his friend. He still loves you, even if he has other interests,” He added genially.
“It’s lonely,” Patton whispered, looking dourly to the floor.
“I’m here for you, Patton. Anything I that can give you is yours,” Logan offered. Patton sniffled and turned back to watch the TV.
Patton didn’t move at first. He just shot Logan glances every few minutes. Logan observed Patton just as much as he watched the movie to make sure he was okay. After a bit of time passed, Patton took a deep breath and shifted closer on the couch. If Logan hadn’t watched him do it, he might not have been aware it was such a slight move. Logan put his arm up on the back of the couch to make it obvious he was okay with Patton moving closer. Patton looked between the floor and Logan a few times before shifting more towards Logan and laying down on his lap. Logan waited a few more moments for experimentally lowered his arm. He floated it over Patton before he rested it on him, and Patton grabbed his arm to hold along with his plush.
Logan pulled the blanket off the back of the couch with a one-handed effort and tossed it over Patton’s lower half. He snuggled up under the lopsided blanket and scooted up closer on Logan’s lap, pulling Logan’s arm with him. Logan sighed happily and watched Patton tiredly watch the movie more than the film itself. It was one Roman loved, so he already knew it by heart. He texted Roman apologizing that he couldn’t start dinner tonight with a picture message of Patton laying on his lap and Roman sent a solid eight messages of key smashes. Then he ranted about how far Patton had come and how incredibly jealous he was.
Patton was completely absorbed into the movie by the time Roman made it home, so Roman did a silent dance just out of Patton’s vision. The moonwalk was particularly impressive, and being able to spin soundlessly was a skill. He then retreated to the kitchen to make a ‘victory meal’, whatever that was. Roman’s cooking was amazing, so he was sure it will be lovely. Logan sometimes heard Roman’s soft singing from the kitchen over the film, but Patton didn’t appear to notice. He looked very comfortable and engrossed in the movie. Logan sighed in relief and smiled at Patton. It was so wonderful to remember that things could get better if you tried.

Would you mind if I request some more of the Logince family with baby Patton and older brother Virgil? Who did they adopt first? What was the meeting between Virgil and Patton like? Did they like each other right away or no?
@radioactivehelena said to onthevirgeofdestruction: 7. “Look at you… Goodness, you’re so cute.” Virgil and Patton? @eviearie said to onthevirgeofdestruction: Bliss 7 for prompts?

Roman’s excitement was palpable as the social worker’s car pulled up to the side of the sidewalk. Virgil would have liked to make fun of him for bouncing like a kid, but he was still too nervous. Logan kept a steadying hand on Virgil’s shoulder, though, and that helped more than he could admit out loud. A short lady with bob cute came out of the car and walked up to Roman.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Sanders. I’m really sorry for the delay. There was some… trouble with the pickup,” She said sheepishly.
“It’s all well and good! We’re just so excited to meet him!” Roman said brightly and waved away her concerns. She smiled weakly and turned back to the back seat of the car to let Patton out. The view was blocked by Roman, but Virgil didn’t really care so much. He pressed into Logan’s side and Logan rubbed his shoulder affectionately. Logan being willing to stay with him helped Virgil feel less insecure.
“Look. At. You! Oh my goodness, you are the cutest little thing,” Roman cooed and squatted down on the lawn. Virgil saw the kid’s curly hair from the side, but his face was buried in a beat-up looking rabbit doll. He seemed pretty short and small for a 6-year-old. Virgil looked up to Logan, who’s face was scrunched with concern. Logan must have agreed.
“Come on, Patton,” The social worker urged him, but Patton shook his head and dropped to the grass next to the sidewalk and started crying. “I’m sorry, he’s… had a hard day,” She explained. She tried to put her hand on his shoulder, but he shirked away. Roman shot Logan a desperate look, but Logan shook his head slightly and shrugged. Roman stopped and stared for a moment, deciding what to do.
“This old town can slow you down, people taking the easy way. But I know exactly where I’m going. And getting closer, closer, every day,” Roman started singing softly and Patton loosened up slightly. “And I’m almost there, I’m almost there. People down here think I’m crazy, but I don’t care. Trials and tribulations I’ve had my share. There ain’t nothing gonna stop me now ‘cause I’m almost there,” Roman broke out singing, striking a pose and beaming down to Patton. Patton pulled away from his rabbit doll slightly and looked up and watched Roman as he continued to sing. Roman stood upright and Roman spun around the lawn and eventually a smile spread on Patton’s face. He grasped his doll tightly in his lap and watched Roman dance around with bright eyes.
“Hello, my prince,” Roman said brightly and dropped back down to squat to look at Patton again. He clenched his doll tighter but still looked interested in Roman.
“Hi,” Patton said quietly, half-hiding behind his doll again. Roman held out his hand for Patton, and Patton looked between it and Roman a few times before timidly taking it. Roman helped Patton up to his feet with a smile. Patton backed up from Roman and held his doll nervously.
“Welcome home, Patton,” Roman bowed deeply. Virgil rolled his eyes at how extra Roman was. Patton seemed to respond to it, though. A little giggle bubbled up it Patton and bowed back. Virgil had to admit he was cute, too.
“Hi,” Patton muttered again, looking from Roman to Logan and Virgil.
“Hello, Patton,” Logan nodded and smiled over to him.
“Are you feeling better, Patton?” His social worker asked, and he looked up to her and nodded, but backed up from her, too. “I’ll get your things,” She said and went to the trunk of the car. Patton looked over to Logan with concern and then looked pointedly at Virgil for a moment.
“That’s Virgil, he’s your new brother,” Roman provided, watching Patton’s eye line. Virgil waved weekly to Patton, feeling very conflicted. Patton walked up to Virgil and looked up to him. Virgil looked confused and looked to Roman. Roman just motioned to Patton, but Virgil didn’t feel like he knew what to do. He felt torn now between his feelings and his desires. Virgil looked up to Logan hoping for an answer and Logan just squeezed Virgil’s shoulder again. That wasn’t an answer. It’s not like Virgil explained himself though, it was dumb to hope for one.
“Is your hair real?” Patton asked, sounding more careful than a curious kid should. Patton pointed up to his hair. Virgil looked up to his purple bangs and pulled on them.
“Um, yeah,” Virgil said sheepishly. Virgil caught a glimpse of something purple peeking out from under Patton’s sleeve as he gripped his doll again. Logan dropped down to Patton’s height and smiled at him. Patton still looked concerned and kept his distance.
“It’s nice to meet you, Patton. I’m looking forward to getting to know you,” Logan said brightly. Patton smiled slightly back at Logan, but scooted closer to Virgil. Virgil angled himself to get a better look, and then recognition struck. Virgil’s mouth set in a hard line and any residual hate he had for this kid had disappeared in an instant. Patton needed to be here just as much as Virgil did. Virgil squatted down as well to greet Patton properly.
“Hey,” He waved to Patton. Patton’s concern melted when he looked to Virgil, and he walked right up.
“This is Mrs. Bunnyface,” Patton said and wiggled the doll, holding it out in front of him.
“Hey, Mrs. Bunnyface,” Virgil felt a little stupid saying it, but he wouldn’t dare say it and hurt this kid’s feelings. “Is she your friend?”
“Yeah,” Patton said and nodded brightly.
“Excuse me, um, Mr. Sanders? I should probably explain a few things. From this morning, I mean,” She stammered out, looking worriedly between the two other adults.
“Oh?” Roman said, standing back up and walking over to the social worker holding the backpack and a small beat-up carry-on luggage bag.
“Will you be all right with Patton, Virgil?” Logan asked carefully, looking concerned. “I should possibly be in on this conversation,” Logan said, fidgeting with the buttons on his wrist.
“Yeah,” Virgil smiled weakly and nodded. He swallowed hard as he watched Logan stand up and walk over to the car next to the social worker. The social worker talked in hushed tones he couldn’t hear, but Virgil probably had a pretty good idea already if it had anything to do with the bruise on Patton’s arm and why he was nervous around the other adults but not Virgil. “So tell me about Mrs. Bunnyface,” Virgil said, sitting down in the grass and crossing his legs under him. Patton walked right up and sat in front of Virgil, making the doll hop around.
“Mrs. Bunnyface likes t’make cookies and cakes!” Patton said brightly.
“She does? Does she make carrot cake?” Virgil asked, playing along.
“No!” Patton stuck out his tongue. “Mrs. Bunnyface hates carrots,” Patton made a disgusted face and noise and made the doll shake its head.
“Is that so, huh?” Virgil laughed, amused. “I’ve never met a bunny who hates carrots,”
“But, you met Mrs. Bunnyface,” Patton pouted, stopping his doll from hopping around.
“That’s true. You’re right. Sorry, kid,” Virgil chuckled slightly.
“You wanna see her?” Patton asked shyly, pulling the doll in again.
“I-yeah… sure,” Virgil said quietly, taking the doll carefully. He didn’t understand why Patton would so willingly share something he clearly loved. Virgil looked at the worn-down low-pile fur and the faded tag sticking out under the rabbit's tail. He’d had this doll for a long time. He handed it back to him with a smile. “She’s lovely,”
   “Yes,” Patton nodded proudly.
“What does Mrs. Bunnyface like to eat?” Virgil asked.
“Mac an’ cheese,” Patton nodded again, holding her close. “Can I touch your hair?” Patton asked curiously. “Sorry,” He stopped himself.
“No, no, be my guest,” Virgil shook his head before leaning forward so Patton could reach. Patton’s little fingers tugged at it a little, but Virgil didn’t mind.
“It feels funny,” Patton looked disappointed when Virgil looked back to him.
“Yeah, hair dye will do that,” Virgil chuckled lightly and looked back over to Roman and Logan. Logan’s arms were crossed and Roman looked very upset, but he was nodding along and listening quietly to the social worker. Patton yawned slightly and leaned towards Virgil. “Are you okay, Patton?” Virgil asked as he glanced back to Roman who looked like he was ready to punch somebody, now. Virgil felt like he should get Patton inside in case Roman blew up.
   “Uh-huh,” Patton nodded slowly.
“What do you say we go watch some cartoons while they talk?” Virgil asked gently.
“Are we allowed?” Patton furrowed his eyebrows and looked worried.
“Yeah, we’re allowed,” Virgil nodded and stood up. Patton crawled to his feet and took ahold of Virgil’s hand with no prompting. Virgil waved to them with his free hand and when Roman looked over, Virgil motioned with his thumb to the house. Roman nodded and looked back to the social worker. “What’s your favourite cartoon?” Virgil asked as they headed inside. Patton just looked down and didn’t respond, stiffening up and slowing down as he walked. “That’s okay, you don’t have to say. Does Mrs. Bunnyface like any cartoons?” Virgil asked carefully.
“Mrs. Bunnyface likes Winnie the Pooh,” Patton loosened back up quickly and bounced into the living room, dropping in the middle of the floor in front of the TV. Virgil flipped through the movies on the entertainment shelf. Winnie the pooh was kind of young for a kid his age, but Patton acted a little young, too. Virgil found the Winnie the Pooh movie and put it into the blu-ray player.
“You can sit on the couch if you want,” Virgil offered. Patton looked between Virgil and the TV and opted to climb up and sit next to Virgil after a moment of consideration. Roman and Logan came in a few minutes later with Patton’s things in tow.
“Hello, boys!” Roman said brightly, though he looked a little off. Virgil couldn’t blame him.
“Hey. We’re watching Winnie the Pooh,” Virgil said, motioning with his head towards the TV.
“Ah, stellar idea,” Roman beamed and sat down on the couch. Patton moved a little closer to Virgil and held his doll tightly. Logan headed down the hall with Patton’s things. “Do you like Winnie the pooh? I love Tigger, myself,” Roman said brightly. Patton looked up to Virgil with concern before looking back to Roman.
“Who is Mrs. Bunnyface’s favourite character, Patton?” Virgil asked with a small smile to Patton.
“She, um, she likes Piglet,” Patton said quietly.
“Piglet is a noble choice. He’s always there for Pooh and his friends,” Roman crossed his leg and sat back on the couch.
“Who do you like?” Patton looked up to Virgil.
“I like Eeyore. He gets me,” Virgil smirked.
“I think Eeyore needs a hug,” Patton frowned.
“He probably does,” Virgil shrugged. “He’s got a great family to take care of him, though,” Logan returned into the living room.
“Patton, is there anything you are interested in for dinner?” Logan asked as he walked to stand behind the couch. Patton froze up and couldn’t answer again.
“Mrs. Bunnyface would probably like Macaroni and cheese, right Patton?” Virgil asked, hoping the emphasis on the doll's name was enough for Logan to catch on. Patton nodded slightly, looking worried. “She also really hates carrots,” Virgil added.
“Yeah,” Patton said quietly, looking up to Virgil nervously again.
“I will… take that into consideration,” Logan said carefully, seeming to understand and nodding once.
“Wha’?” Patton looked confused at Logan for a moment.
“He said he wants Mrs. Bunnyface to be happy,” Virgil said.
“He did?” Patton asked quietly as he leaned closer to Virgil.
“Yup,” Virgil nodded and moved his arm to let Patton scoot in. Roman smiled softly at Virgil, who just rolled his eyes back at him in return.

took my brain a few days to stew, but I finally got it. Thanks for the nice notes!
“Virgil!” Patton cried and ran into his older brother’s legs as soon as he got home, clenching his fits into Virgil’s jeans and wailing. Virgil held up his hands for a moment, not knowing what to do. He looked around desperately but saw Patton’s pitiful little shakes as he cried and knew hew had to fix it. He carefully pried Patton off his pants and leaned down to hold his shoulders. Patton was hunched in on himself and rubbed his nose on his sleeve while he kept bawling.
“Pat, what’s wrong?” Virgil asked, thrown between panic and concerned with the inexplicable desire to punch whoever made Patton cry.
“I took Mrs. Bunnyface to school because there was a mean person who kept making fun of my glasses. So I wann’ed something to hug. But when I opened my backpack on the bus, somebody saw her. And they made fun of her an' me, and they tried to take her! But I woul’n’t leggo and they tore off her ear!” Patton sobbed again. Virgil briefly considered how much trouble he’d get in for punching a seven-year-old before pulling Patton in for a hug. Patton wrapped his arms around Virgil’s neck and whined, continuing to sob heavily. Virgil rubbed Patton’s back while he worked through the tears.
“Is Mrs. Bunnyface and her ear still in your backpack?” Virgil asked gently after Patton cried himself out a little more.
“Y-yeah,” Patton sniffled miserably and backed up to rub his nose on his sleeve again. Virgil picked up Patton and carried him into his bedroom, setting Patton down on his bed. Virgil grabbed the tissue box off of his desk and passed it over to Patton, who took a small wad and blew his nose. Virgil helped Patton out of his backpack and unzipped as he set in on the bed. When Virgil pulled the bunny with the missing ear out Patton made the most miserable noise Virgil had ever heard in his life.
“It’s okay, Patty, we can fix her,” Virgil offered sweetly, digging around in Patton’s bag for the loose ear.
“We can?” Patton sniffled, balling up his fists tightly on the end of his shirt and looking hopefully to Virgil.
“We can. She just needs some TLC. It won’t hurt her a bit,” Virgil nodded, finally finding the strip of fabric and grasping it to pull it out. Virgil inspected the end, and the fabric wasn’t too frayed. The ear would just be a little shorter on one side. “Why don’t you give her a hug and tell her she’ll be okay while I go get my supplies,” Virgil handed the doll over to Patton, who took the doll and squeezed her desperately.
“It’s gonna be okay Mrs. Bunnyface,” Patton muttered and Virgil rubbed Patton’s shoulder for a second to get up and dig in his closet for his sewing kit. He hadn’t needed it in a while. Virgil eventually found it in a shoebox of loose stuff and returned to sit on the bed next to Patton. Virgil picked up the detached ear and carefully tucked in the frayed part of the fabric and slid a pin out of the kit to pin it flat.
“Can I have Mrs. Bunnyface back?” Virgil asked softly as he pulled a small tan threaded bobbin to match her ear color as close as possible. Patton kissed the doll’s nose before nodding and handing it back. Virgil held the doll between his legs and threaded the needle quickly before pulling his legs up on the bed to hold her closer to him. He carefully slid the needle right at the fold of the fabric on the ear and ladder stitched the ear back on to the doll’s head, at the seam of the low-pile fur, as closely matching the other side as he could. Patton flinched and swallowed the first time he saw the needle go into her head, but Virgil gave him as reassuring a smile as he could possibly muster and he seemed to accept it.
“Is she okay?” Patton asked meekly. Virgil shifted his knees against each other to make the doll nod its head, and Patton looked enamored, making a tiny happy squeak. He still had the tear streaks down his face, but he finally didn’t look so miserable.
“Do you want to see something cool?” Virgil asked temptingly.
“Mm-hm,” Patton nodded, looking a little concerned. Virgil pulled the needle through the last part on the head and tugged at the thread gently, and it pulled the rabbit’s ear on to its head stitch by stitch. Patton’s eye’s widened, and his mouth dropped. “Are you a wizard?” He asked in awe.
“Shh, don’t tell anyone,” Virgil put his finger up to his lips and whispered quietly. Patton nodded brightly and grabbed the edge of the bed and kicked his legs, miming zipping up his lips. Virgil tied off the knot and put a small dab of superglue on the spot before cutting off the thread and passing her back to Patton. Patton’s eyes glittered and reached out for her tentatively. “You’ll have to be careful with her ear from now on, okay?” Virgil said and put his hand on Patton’s back while he happily squeezed his doll again.
“’Kay!” Patton chirped, looking at the base of the ear with wonder.
“How about we go to the kitchen and we split an apple? I bet you’re hungry after all those emotions,” Virgil offered softly as he put the supplied back in his kit and closed it up. Patton nodded and hopped off Virgil’s bed, not taking his eyes off the doll as he headed back out the bedroom door.
“Can we have it with peanut butter?” Patton asked, looking up to Virgil who was now following behind him down the hall to the kitchen.
“Yeah. I’ll even put raisins and cinnamon in the peanut butter,” Virgil smiled down to Patton, and he grinned and ran to the kitchen. Virgil chuckled and followed after Patton.
Patton was passed out in his jammies on the couch after dinner, holding Mrs. Bunnyface tightly under a soft knitted throw while a cartoon played on the TV. Logan put down his tablet and was about to get up to carry Patton off to bed, but Virgil put his arm on Logan’s shoulder to stop him from getting up.
“What’s wrong, Virgil?” Logan asked quietly. Virgil got up to pick up Patton instead, carefully draping him against his chest and heading off to Patton’s bedroom to tuck him in. Virgil laid him down in bed, making sure not to lay the doll’s floppy ears under Patton as he held on tight, even in his sleep. He turned on the white noise machine and the nightlight before closing up and heading back out into the living room.
“You wanted to tuck him in?” Logan asked curiously.
“He had a tough day,” Virgil nodded and sat back down next to Logan, taking the remote and ending the kid’s cartoon and switching it to a show he wanted to watch. Logan hummed and nodded, turning his attention back to his tablet. Virgil settled on Avatar and looked to Logan for a moment. “Hey, dad?”
“Yes, Virgil?” Logan looked up from his tablet to Virgil.
“Can I get a ride into school tomorrow from you or papa?” Virgil asked carefully, shifting slightly back from Logan.
“Do you need to go early?” Logan asked curiously.
“I need to go a little late, actually,” Virgil said sheepishly, raising his shoulders to brace himself.
“Why on earth would you need to go to school late?” Logan furrowed his eyebrows. Virgil flinched slightly back from Logan's upset expression.
“Not after the bell!” Virgil added quickly and held up his hands. “I just need to have a word with someone at Patton’s bus stop tomorrow morning,” Virgil explained airily.
“Should I be concerned?” Logan said, raising his eyebrow, his expression changing quickly from bothered to inquisitive.
“Nah,” Virgil waved his hand dismissively. “I’ve got this,” Virgil smirked and leaned back against the couch. Logan stared at Virgil impassively for a moment longer before returning to his tablet.

This fanfic... I can't really put into words but... It creates such a peaceful scene to me. Remy watching the kiddos holding Mrs Bunnyface and Remus and Patton having so much fun, playing and being kids while Janus and Virgil are also having such a good time. And then, when they get in the car, Remus and Patton happily sleeping, Janus and Virgil bickering and Remy getting soft with all this.... It's really amazing. Really really sweet, lovely and truly amazing.
I adore how Remy introduces himself and how he gets them presents and how excited Patton when he realizes what he got (he tackling Virgil on the floor because they have matching hoodies is 💛💛💛💛💛💛) and also Virgil with the playful bickering (and tearing the wrapping with his teeth I- aucajvskvsyvskvaygs). Aaaaaaaaaa so fabulous, so cool, so 💛💛💛💛💛💛
Not to tell about Roman and Logan! Oh gosh, Roman almost giving up of their trip because he already misses his babeys is so Roman ahcsuvwkqggcwuvw I feel u, mah boi. And Logan and Roman and Virgil playful bickering is also so endearing! You can see just how much they love and care for each other.
A Whole Castle

You mentioned uncle Remy once and I’d love to see him meeting Patton for the first time. Does he bring lots of presents? I feel like that’s something he would do. And whose brother is he? Also! Is Emile in this au?
“I’m perfectly capable of taking care of Patton overnight, dad,” Virgil crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes.
“It is longer than overnight, we won’t be back until next evening,” Logan said evenly as he did a final check through to make sure Roman didn’t forget anything in his bag.
