Role of Ultrasound in Prenatal Care and Women’s Health
Ultrasound imaging, often associated with pregnancy, plays a vital role in women’s healthcare. It is a non-invasive, radiation-free diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to create images of internal organs and tissues. While its most common use is monitoring fetal development during pregnancy, ultrasound also aids in diagnosing and managing various gynecological conditions, contributing significantly to overall women’s health.
In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of ultrasound in prenatal care and women’s health, its role in early detection and prevention, and how advanced diagnostic centers like Apex Diagnostics in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, offer comprehensive imaging services. We'll also touch upon other diagnostic services available, including multislice CT scans near Shimla and MRI in Solan, which complement ultrasound in women’s healthcare.
Ultrasound in Prenatal Care
1. Early Pregnancy Confirmation and Viability
Ultrasound is crucial in confirming pregnancy as early as 4-6 weeks. It helps determine the viability of the pregnancy, including the presence of a fetal heartbeat and whether it is an intrauterine or ectopic pregnancy. Early detection is essential for managing potential complications.
2. Monitoring Fetal Development
Throughout pregnancy, ultrasounds are used to monitor fetal growth and development, assess amniotic fluid levels, and detect congenital anomalies. The standard 3D and 4D ultrasound techniques provide detailed images, allowing healthcare providers and parents to see the fetus’s movements and facial features in real-time.
3. Assessing Placental Health
Ultrasounds help in evaluating the placenta's position and health, ensuring there are no issues like placenta previa, which can cause complications during delivery. Early identification of placental issues allows for appropriate medical management.
4. Guiding High-Risk Pregnancies
For women with high-risk pregnancies, ultrasound monitoring becomes more frequent. It helps in diagnosing conditions such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and fetal growth restrictions. Paired with health packages in Solan that include regular monitoring, these ultrasounds provide a comprehensive approach to prenatal care.
Ultrasound in Women’s Health Beyond Pregnancy
Ultrasound is not limited to prenatal care; it is also instrumental in diagnosing and managing various gynecological conditions:
1. Pelvic Pain and Abnormal Bleeding
Ultrasound is often the first diagnostic tool used to evaluate pelvic pain and abnormal bleeding. It can identify conditions such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, and endometriosis, enabling early intervention.
2. Infertility Investigations
For women experiencing infertility, ultrasound is used to monitor ovulation, assess uterine abnormalities, and guide assisted reproductive procedures. This non-invasive method is essential for tailoring personalized treatment plans.
3. Breast Health
Breast ultrasound is a complementary tool to mammography, particularly useful for women with dense breast tissue. It helps detect lumps, cysts, and other abnormalities that may not be visible on a mammogram.
4. Menstrual Disorders and PCOS
Ultrasound helps diagnose polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by identifying multiple cysts on the ovaries. It also assists in evaluating the endometrium for menstrual disorders, helping healthcare providers offer targeted treatments.
Complementary Diagnostic Tools in Women’s Health
While ultrasound is a primary imaging tool, other advanced diagnostics can complement it for a more comprehensive assessment:
1. Multislice CT Scan Near Shimla
In cases where more detailed imaging of the abdominal or pelvic region is required, a multislice CT scan near Shimla can provide precise cross-sectional images. This is especially useful for diagnosing conditions like ovarian cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, and complex uterine abnormalities.
2. MRI in Solan
For soft tissue evaluation, an MRI in Solan offers superior imaging clarity. It is often used for detailed assessments of reproductive organs, including detecting fibroids, adenomyosis, and ovarian masses. MRI is also invaluable in evaluating suspected pelvic or breast cancers when ultrasound and CT scans are inconclusive.
The Importance of Preventive Health Packages
Preventive healthcare is essential for early detection and management of potential health issues. Diagnostic centers like Apex Diagnostics offer health packages in Solan that combine ultrasound with other imaging techniques and routine tests, ensuring a holistic approach to women’s health.
Benefits of Health Packages for Women

A friend of mine dared me to write a grimdark story so here's a thing
We were a small task force, six soldiers sent to check on the jungles back on Earth. We expected the mission to be quick.
We’d all heard stories about Earth, about how before the bombs dropped in ‘37 it used to be a haven of Solan life. I mean, Humans still live on Earth sure as there’s air on Mars, but they’re different. All of the boys and I were from Tranquility on the Moon, miner’s kids who just wanted to join the force.
We landed on the surface during the night. We’d never seen the Moon from below, it looked like a tiny silver sliver in the sky. We took our first steps onto the thick moss that blanketed the ground. The locals used to call it Nevada. It was a mess of, well not trees, they were giant woody stalks that rose to the skyline and draped white blankets of what looked like mold.
We heard all around us the drilling cry of something called ‘cicadas’, the cry of birds, and crickets, and with every step we took the crunch of the thick moss under our feet. We walked maybe five hours through the jungle, coming across the ruins of old towns. Im not sure about much but we were all confused when we saw most of the town ruins we found had Spanish names considering the Old American Empire was supposed to be an English country, but they could’ve been taken from Mexico for all we know.
There was never much in terms of remains in ruins, bodies have been eaten up by bugs and were only identifiable by the growth of mushrooms all over them. But one thing we always knew, is what direction the bombs dropped from since the shadows faced the same directions. It took us a few seconds to notice too, shadows burned into concrete and asphalt. But no Humans.
Eventually, the Earth sunrise came as we trekked, a strange mix of oranges and pinks in the normally blue sky. As sun fell through the tops of moldy blankets enveloping the jungles, flowers on the ground began to bloom, and we agreed to find a clearing free of spores to eat.
We found a small clearing where the ‘trees’ weren’t around, breathable amounts of spores, and survivable radiation levels. We took off our helmets and pulled our MRIs from the bag. And then we made a mistake; we let our guard down on Earth. Someone sat down on some ivy and began unwrapping his MRI, when it started to grow. It grew and wrapped a vine around his leg and once he got up its grip tightened, pulling him to the ground where more vines sprung from the ivy to engulf him.
I rushed with my knife to cut him out, when felt a wet burning on my shoulder; my armor was melting off. We all looked at each other when saw rustling in a bush. Another man rushed to unholster his gun, shot, and we all heard a loud screech and smelt the odd scent of … strawberries. I kept trying to cut the first man out of the ivy when the one who took the shot looked at what he hit.
It looked like a ‘Human’, but its skin was covered in thick bark, its middle knuckle extended out into a sharp spine, and its mouth had a set of insectoid mandibles. It was still twitching. The smell of strawberries grew stronger as I pulled the first soldier free, he was left gasping for air and his armor’s vitals said he inhaled a lot of toxic spores. Someone put a few bullets in the head of the creature, and he started heading back to the ship.
That was our second mistake, not burning the body. As we walked, the sweet smell followed us, and the jungle went silent. Not quite, not low, dead silent. Now, here’s what I can’t understand; we followed the exact trail that we followed from our ship, and found ourselves in the middle of nowhere.
There were deep trenches all around us, as the radiation was highest here. We walked slowly, and carefully. Then, we made our final mistake. We announced ourselves.
A jittery man took a shot at another one of the same creatures when it made a jump at him, and the jungle cried out. All at once every single creature in the jungle seemed to be all around our desolate trench and the air grew foggy. No, moldy.
We ran between the trenches when we saw them; the previous task force. They lay still on the ground, one man kicked the palm of a soldier’s hand when his boot got stabbed. By one of those spines, the dead men started to get up. We heard the same clicking all around us, when suddenly the helmets of the dead started to melt off as they spat acid at my fellow soldiers.
I shot quick, taking the surprise from the others as a chance to run. I hid in what looked like a makeshift artillery bunker and looked from the peephole to see more of the bug men walking by. And then I noticed it, a thin string of mycelium connecting them with everything else. I saw one of the surviving soldiers from my task force being dragged by two bugs, down to a tree in a crater. It was covered in shelf fungus, was was leaking green sap. They forced him to lick the sap, and that’s when I knew what I had to do.
The mycelium all circled around the tree, and as he licked it his body grew a dark oaky bark, his face and hands warped, and he grew a string of mycelium attached to the tree. I scrounged around in the dirt, found an old flask that still smelt like it had some alcohol in it, took out a matchbox, and stepped out.
I ran passed the bugs, spitting acid and running at me. The newly transformed shoulder seemed to be shaking, as he spit acid onto my face. I felt my cheek burning, and with little strength left, I lit the match and threw it in the flask. The capped flask bursted into burning ethanol as I hurled it, and saw the tree catch fire. The bugs began screaming, as I felt the last shot of acid hit the back of my head, and burn through my skull. And my last thought was; “Nature can take Earth back, but Humanity can always kill nature.”

Pregnancy Level I scan / NT-NB Scan
What is a nuchal translucency / Level I scan?
It is a screening test in form of ultrasound scan done from 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. To be precise it is done from 11 weeks 3 days to 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy. It is usually done along with a blood test called dual marker and these both form a combined screening test.
It is known as NT /NB scan as doctor measures the nuchal anslucency (NT) and nasal bone (NB) of the fetus. It is also commonly known by name of level-I scan. The radiologist measures a fluid-filled space behind your baby’s neck known as nuchal transluceny. This measurement can help to detect the risk of your baby having a chromosomal abnormality such as Down syndrome.
In addition to nuchal translucency the doctor looks for nasal bone of fetus. Absent or short nasal bone indicates the possibility of underlying chromosomal abnormalities.
Other things like developing limbs, stomach bubble, intracranial structures, developing spine , placenta, cervical length etc are also assessed in the same scan. Some structural abnormalities can be ruled out in this scan like absent limbs, skeletal abnormalities , any abdominal wall defect with protrusion of the abdominal contents out etc. So it’s a type of early scan to rule out some abnormalities which are lethal and there is no point in carrying the pregnancy further.
In addition to these now a days pre-eclamsia screening is routinely done with the NT/NB scan. It helps to assess the risk of patient of developing hypertension ( increased blood pressure) in the course of pregnancy. In case of high risk the obstetrician gives some prophylactic drugs to the patient. Pre-eclampsia is a very common cause of bad obstetrics outcone like intrauterine fetal demise, growth restriction, premature deliveries etc.
In case this is your first scan it gives the additional information about the site of pregnancy and the exact dating.
So all in all it’s a very useful non invasive test and every patient must be recommended this scan to rule out underlying problems fetus may have.It also gives reassurance to the mother that everything inside is going fine and relieve her of undue stress.
What are the indications and right time to get NT /NB scan?
Now a days with the advancement of the medical field it is a routine to get level I USG for all the expecting mothers whether there is any history of any congenital abnormality in previous issues or not.
The importance increases if the maternal age is high, previous history of birth defects , previous fetal demise, maternal high BP and diabetes.
A nuchal translucency scan is done between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. Ideally the time is 11weeks 3 days to 13 weeks 6 days.
What to expect and how to prepare yourself while going for nuchal translucency scan.
The first thing is you need not be fasting before going for scan. Many patients starve themselves before these scan and end up feeling miserable. There is no role of fasting in the obstetric scan.
You need to drink some water and you must have moderately full urinary bladder. There is no need to have extra-full bladder, just moderate pressure will be good for the scan.
Normally the scan is done trans- abdominally. The radiologist will apply some gel and gently move the ultrasound probe across your abdomen. Usually it takes about 15-20 minutes for the scan. However it all depends on the position of your baby. If the position is favorable the scan can be done easily in one go. Many a times you will have to wait until the baby lies in the favorable position required by the radiologist. You may be asked to come repeatedly in the ultrasound room after waiting for some time.
Some times trans vaginal ultrasound needs to be done for better visualization of the fetus. In that case ultrasound probe is gently inserted into your vagina which may feel a bit uncomfortable but usually is not painful.
What does the results tell?
The NT/NB scan results are usually combined with a blood test ( Dual markers) and these both assess the combined risk of chromosomal disorders in pregnancy.
Remember that a normal screening result (screen negative) isn’t a guarantee that your baby has normal chromosomes, but it does suggest that a problem is unlikely. Likewise, an abnormal screening result (screen positive) doesn’t mean that your baby has a chromosomal problem – just that your baby is more likely to have one. Most screen-positive babies turn out not to have a problem: Only about a third of babies with an increased nuchal translucency measurement turn out to have chromosomal defects.
Results are usually reported as ‘low risk’ or ‘high risk’. If the result comes out to be low risk then the pregnancy is considered to be normal and no further tests are usually done. If the result comes to be moderate or high risk then further assessment is done by invasive procedures such as chorionic venous sampling and amniocentesis which will give you a definitive result. A non invasive blood test know as NIPT (Non invasive prenatal testing) is also available now a days to diagnose the chromosomal abnormalities. Your obstetrician or genetic counselor will help you to choose between these tests.

ROLE OF CT SCAN IN COVID-19 DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT
Since the second massive wave of COVID-19 hit India in early April, there is so much going on with lots of questions regarding use of CT scan in diagnosis and management of patients.
We will try to solve queries regarding the same here –
Computed tomography (CT) of the chest plays an important role in the diagnosis and management of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but it should not be used indiscriminately in every patient.
It should be done only if the Doctor prescribes it seeing the clinical situation of patient.
It is not a useful tool in early days of disease as it often comes normal and gives false reassurance to patients.
It is usually advised in the progressive and peak stage of the disease (6-13 days) if your treating physician prescribes so.
It is useful in a small subset of COVID-19 suspects who test negative on (RT-PCR) with normal/indeterminate chest X-ray (CXR) but have moderate-to-severe respiratory symptoms and high index of clinical suspicion.
CT chest is not indicated in every RT-PCR–positive patient and should be done only in specific clinical scenarios, where it is expected to significantly contribute in the clinical management such as COVID-19 patients showing unexplained clinical deterioration.
It is also useful to exclude the clots in the lung vessels ( known as pulmonary thromboembolism) which needs a contrast CT scan.
CT chest is also indicated in COVID-19–positive patients with associated co-morbidities (age >65 yr, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, immune-compromise, etc.) who, despite having mild symptoms and normal/indeterminate CXR, record oxygen saturation of <93 per cent at rest while breathing room air or de-saturate on six-minute walk test.
It is very useful in diagnosing the disease with patients having the typical symptoms but negative RTPCR report who are deteriorating, presenting with shortness of breath etc. Such patients are in a state of denial that they have the disease as their RT PCR reports are negative and also many patients don’t get admissions due to false negative reports.
CT serves a very useful tool in such cases as it tells the condition of the lungs as well as helps in diagnosis of COVID and also rules out other diseases like Tuberculosis, Interstitial lung disease etc.
CT gives insight about the severity of the disease and a CT severity score is given to every patient which helps the clinician understanding whether the disease is mid, moderate or severe. Also it helps the clinician to start certain medications based on the involvement of lungs like steroids, blood thinners etc.
Some patients may look good and have normal O2 saturation but when investigated shows some changes in X-ray and when CT is done if prescribed shows significant lung involvement. Such patients gets benefitted as immediate appropriate treatment can be started in these patients.
It is far better than X-ray which underestimates the disease and cause delay in treatment.
In latest machines the dose of the radiations are very low as compared to old ones and if CT is advised one should not be hesitant about it.
Diseases like Tuberculoisis, Interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary edema etc gets neglected whenever there is acute surge in the COVID cases and these patients usually have to get the RT PCR test for COVID which comes out negative. In such cases when everyone suspects COVID to be the cause of symptoms like cough, fever etc CT scan can easily resolve the problem and is very useful for diagnosing the actual underlying problem.
Finally, CT chest plays a crucial role to rule out lung fibrosis in patients recovered from COVID-19 infection who present with breathlessness and hypoxia.
In conclusion, though CT chest is an indispensable diagnostic tool in COVID-19, it should be used judiciously and only when specifically indicated.
