Biden to Designate Monument Near Grand Canyon, Preventing Uranium Mining
Uranium extraction had already been restricted in the area, which Native tribes consider sacred, but the moratorium was set to expire in 2032. Mr. Biden’s designation will make it permanent.
(The New York Times, 8/8/23) President Biden will designate nearly a million acres of land near the Grand Canyon as a new national monument on Tuesday to protect the area from uranium mining, administration officials confirmed on Monday.
Mr. Biden’s visit to Arizona is part of a nationwide blitz by the White House to translate key policy victories to voters — including a law he signed last year to inject $370 billion in tax incentives into wind, solar and other renewable energy — as the 2024 campaign ramps up. Senior cabinet officials are also touring the country this week, highlighting his domestic agenda.
During his first stop of a three-state tour, Mr. Biden will announce that he is creating a national monument — the fifth such designation of his presidency — in an area sacred to Native American tribes, administration officials told reporters on Monday.
“The mining is off limits for future development in that area,” Ali Zaidi, Mr. Biden’s national climate adviser, told reporters on Air Force One. “It’s focused on preserving the historical resources” in the area.
Native tribes and environmental groups have long lobbied for the government to permanently protect the area around the Grand Canyon from uranium mining, which they say would damage the Colorado River watershed as well as areas with great cultural meaning for Native Americans.
Under the proposed designation, all new uranium mining will be blocked. Uranium mining has already been restricted in the area in question since 2012, but that Obama-era moratorium was set to expire in 2032. Mr. Biden’s designation would make the conditions permanent.
Mr. Biden’s visit to Arizona was also an effort to energize crucial constituency groups in the state, even as much of the American public remains skeptical of his domestic agenda.
Mr. Biden has called the Inflation Reduction Act — major legislation he signed last year that aims to cut planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions — “the largest investment ever in clean energy.” Yet 71 percent of Americans say they have heard “little” or “nothing at all” about the package one year later, according to a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll.
And most Americans — 57 percent — disapprove of his handling of climate change, according to the poll. Surveys show young voters, who turned out in force during the 2020 election, are particularly concerned about global warming.
Some environmental groups were left infuriated when Mr. Biden greenlit a drilling project known as Willow on pristine federal land in Alaska and mandated the sale of offshore drilling leases as part of a deal to pass the climate bill, undermining a campaign promise to ban drilling on federal lands.
“We know that polls don’t tell the entire story,” Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, said on Monday when asked about why voters seemingly do not know what it is in Mr. Biden’s bills. As the administration continues to enact the various legislative packages, she said, “we’ll see Americans start to feel what we’ve been able to do in Washington.”
Native Americans were also a crucial voting bloc in Arizona in 2020, when the state voted for a Democratic presidential candidate for the first time since 1996. They made up 6 percent of Arizona’s electorate in 2020, larger than Mr. Biden’s margin for victory, according to the National Congress of American Indians.
More than 80 percent of Native American voters in 2020 agreed with the statement that “the federal government should return lands stolen from Native American tribes,” according to a 2022 poll conducted by the African American Research Collaborative.
“It is likely a strategic decision to focus on the Grand Canyon,” said Gabriel Sanchez, a fellow at the Brookings Institution who has researched voting trends among Native Americans.
“Many Native Americans do not vote based on party, but on which candidates will do the most to advance the interests of Native American communities.”
The National Mining Association called the monument designation “unwarranted” and said it would force the United States to rely on imported uranium from countries like Russia. Representative Bruce Westerman, Republican of Arkansas and the chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources, blasted Mr. Biden for locking up domestic resources.
“This administration’s lack of reason knows no bounds, and their actions suggest that President Biden and his radical advisers won’t be satisfied until the entire federal estate is off limits and America is mired in dependency on our adversaries for our natural resources,” Mr. Westerman said in a statement.
The administration has argued that the proposed monument represents only 1.3 percent of the nation’s known uranium reserves.
“This is going to be a limit on future development in this space while being respectful of existing rights,” Mr. Zaidi said.
The area in question is called Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni — Baaj Nwaavjo, meaning “where tribes roam,” for the Havasupai people, and I’tah Kukveni, or “our footprints,” for the Hopi tribe.
Earlier this year Mr. Biden created a new national monument, Spirit Mountain, in Nevada, insulating from development a half-million acres that are revered by Native Americans. He also restored and expanded protections for Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante in Utah, sites that are sacred to Native Americans and that had been opened to mining and drilling by the Trump administration.
In June, the Biden administration banned drilling for 20 years around Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, one of the nation’s oldest and most culturally significant Native American sites. (Source)

Hashimpura Massacre
It was the 22nd of May 1987, Ramzan and Friday, just like today, when 'secular' India's most shameful and horrendous custodial kil-ling took place at #Hashimpura. That day, after the Friday prayers, in the midst of the ongoing Meerut riots, some 600-700 Muslims..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
were dragged from their homes by army personnel, CRPF, PAC, and police and were made to sit on the footpath near Gulmarg Talkies. — The young and the strong among them were chosen, loaded in a PAC truck URU 1493, and taken to Upper Ganga Canal in Murad Nagar..
and later to Makanpur in Ghaziabad only to be shot cold-blooded and thrown into the canal. — This was totally an anti-muslim crime by the state, though the documented facts are known to everyone, three points are worth mentioning:
A) On May 23, 1987, at Meerut Circuit House, the next day after the massæcre, there was a meeting attended by Veer Bahadur Singh, the CM, Daya Shankar, the DGP, SK Mukherjee, the IG, Nasim Zaidi, the Ghaziabad DM, Vibhuti Narain, the Ghaziabad SP and other senior officials.
There were discussions that can the bodies of 42 be thrown away in the canal just like Malyana, never to be found? Could the 3 survivors under police protection also die? Would anyone expect justice from them? #HashimpuraMassacre
B) One of the survivors Zulfiqar Nasir had a press conference in Delhi with Syed Shahabuddin and Subramanyam Swami, narrating the nightmare he went through. There was a shameless press brief the next day addressed by Meerut DM RS Kaushik, SSP Girdhari Sharma, nd frmr SP VKB Nair.
Not only did they claim that no massacre happened at Hashimpura but also that no one with the name of Zulfiqar ever lived in Hashimpura. Shouldn't they have been punished too for propagating blatant lies. #HashimpuraMassacre
3) There were three 'Sarkari Musalmans' sitting at the vital position throughout the investigation. Just to show the Indianness in them, they did very little to ensure Justice. Syed Khalid Rizvi, who headed the CID failed to link the role of Major Satish Kaushik whose brother..
Prabhat Kumar, a RSS terrœrist, was killed the previous day; who was present at Hashimpura during the whole incident. Mr Nasim Zaidi who later became chief Election commissioner failed to act responsibly and tell the outside world about the heinous crimes.
And Ms Mohsina Kidwai, the then MP of Meerut who later became the General Secretary of AICC, not only refused to ensure medical care to one of the injured survivors but kept silent about the gory crimes.
— Hashimpura, like the Bihar killings of 1946, Nellie of 1983, Bhagalpur of 1989, Delhi Pogrom of 1984 and 2020, Muzaffarnagar of 2013, Gujarat pogrom of 2002, and numerous others remain a disgraceful instance of the merciless and barbaric use of brute state force..
and a spineless, politically expedient government lying prostate before its own men - The Killers. Hashimpura is not just an instance, it's a phenomenon that goes deep into the mindset of Indian society. Justice is awaited. #HashimpuraMassacre

NOSTALGIA UK
Dikir (1994)
Dikit barat ... that's one special scene. Strangely enough I don't recall the evening of the so called international night or something where we performed on stage. What I do remember was the night we were succesfully persuaded to come by and practise.
The setting was a residence hall of the Strathclyde University; whose room or flat (coz I think it was a lot bigger than a normal room) I don't quite remember. But, the one thing clear in my seasoned head is the lead a.k.a. tukang karut ... it was bro Hakim and he was pretty creative with his lyrics - the bit that has failed to leave my mind is in this sketch. It was also the evening I got to know a few other senior students at the uni ... bro Azmir (with the most well maintained pony tail I had even seen male or female), Zaidi (another naval architect), Tengku M. Taufik (Mr CEO at Petronas today) and sis Zuhaida (presumed still at Petronas).
Aaaaaaa .... 🎶🎵🎶

Saying “see you later” is already the hardest for me. Saying “goodbye” is heartbreaking 💔 It’s been a hella one roller coaster ride, physically, mentally and emotionally, but it was worth the while. I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve pushed myself to the edge most of the time. People who may think they know me, may think I am an extrovert, full of energy, but Im actually pushing myself to my limit. Talking to people exhausts me as an introvert, but that’s also the fun part of the job (because it gets boring when you only sit in the office). I loved every moment I had while it lasted, especially the Housekeeping Team, who never failed to lend a helping hand even though they were the busiest among all. I am forever thankful to the team and Ka Norlee. Working more than 9 hours can be exhausting, but this is my motto at work that keeps me charged up, “Tak kenal penat lelah, janji customer bahagia, quality terjaga”. It’s been great working with the team since pre-opening, worked with Mr @hkumar4533, our former Resort Manager, whom I truly respect and thank you for seeing my potential. Ka @z.jo, who’s like my sister that I never had, constantly advising and guiding me through. Chef Zaidi, a very positive person, helpful and willing to teach the tips and tricks of the industry. Ms Doris, who taught and mentored me to be a professional leader. And the rest of the team that I’ve worked with directly and indirectly, of whom through me to where I am right now, from safety to VIP service and first aid. These moments, the people that I have worked alongside with, and our beloved guests, and things that I’ve done that I never thought I could do, ever, sometimes doing it alone, are the moments worth cherishing. It’s time for me to hop on this train of life to another chapter of my life 🚂 “The next station is YOUR FUTURE. Alight here to pursue the career of your dreams”. Until the next chapter. Choo, choo 🚂 #YouMatter #CelebrateMoments #NotBrokenButHuman (at The Abode Resort & Spa) https://www.instagram.com/p/Clz5ewlvyFo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
